10 Best Places for Fado Music in Lisbon

By Todd Plummer

Portugal Lisbon Fado Music Povo

With its wandering streets, intricate tile work and unforgettable colors, Lisbon by day is one of Europe’s most charming cities. But after dark, the city takes on an entirely new mood—one of mystery and romance, and no tradition better encapsulates the passions running through these city streets better than fado, a music genre so integral to the Portuguese experience that UNESCO recognizes it as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It’s electric, it’s raw, it’s emotional, and it's often one of travelers’ most treasured memories of Lisbon. Whether you’re in the mood for a full-on fado restaurant (where you get a traditional meal served alongside a three-hour-or-longer fado performance), or you’re just in the mood for a glass of albariño at the local watering hole where you can hear up-and-coming fadistas give an impromptu performance, here are some of Lisbon’s most treasured fado hot spots.

Portugal Lisbon Fado Music Venue. Mesa de Frades

Mesa de Frades Arrow

Step back in time with a visit to Mesa de Frades, built in a former chapel in Alfama, with the original tiles and murals still on the walls. The musical lineup toes the line between emerging fadistas and established stars, and the intimate setup offers an otherworldly ambience; performers will walk between tables during their sets, giving you a front-row look at the action, no matter where you're sitting. The experience is nonpareil.

Default

Tasca do Chico Arrow

With ceilings draped with flags and walls lined with portraits—all reminders of the local and national legends who have walked through these doors—Tasca Do Chico oozes nostalgia. This is an intimate bar setting in Bairro Alto, where you're likely to be rubbing elbows—and backs, and feet—with your neighbor. Just go with it; after all, the closeness is all part of the fun. Come here on Mondays and Wednesdays for Fado Vadio nights, when locals and amateurs take the stage.

Portugal Lisbon Restaurant Clube de Fado

Clube de Fado Arrow

Since 1995, this candlelit space in the heart of Alfama has enchanted locals and tourists alike. Located just steps from the iconic Lisbon Cathedral, Clube de Fado boasts Moorish influences on every inch, from its arched ceilings to its thick stone walls. The roster is a revolving door of the city’s best singers, including Maria Armanda, Machado Shares, and Maria Ana Bobone; additionally, house guitarist Mario Pacheco is a living icon of the genre. It’s on the pricier end of the spectrum, for sure, but the caliber justifies the splurge, as does the food—don’t leave without trying the signature bacalhau.

Portugal Lisbon Fado Music Caf Luso

Café Luso Arrow

Located in a historic horse stable in Bairro Alto that predates the earthquake of 1755, Café Luso pretty much has history oozing from every inch. There's a beautiful patina on every wall, column, and brick, lending the space a glowing, magical atmosphere and setting the stage for the fabulous music to come. Fado sessions run from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. nightly, with intermissions so guests can converse, order a glass of wine, and move throughout the space.

Casa de Linhares Arrow

Mystery and romance linger on every inch of Casa de Linhares, a storied fado restaurant, located in a Renaissance-era mansion in Alfama that nearly fell to dust in the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755. But thanks to the enduring tradition of fado, this house continues to be an elegant and refined expression of Portuguese culture. The best of the best perform regularly here, including some of the art's most glamorous singers (Fábia Rebordão, Vânia Duarte, Silvana Peres) as well as charming young guitarists (Bruno Chaveiro, André Dias).

Sr. Fado de Alfama Arrow

There are only nine tables at Sr. Fado de Alfama, a hole-in-the-wall fado restaurant in Alfama, so make sure you book in advance. It's a prix-fixe menu, and owners Ana Marina and Duarte Santos bring out your food. As soon as dinner hits the table, they'll transform from servers into performers—it's really a two-person show here. There's plenty of fado in Lisbon, but very few places still have such a homey, salt-of-the-earth feel, and the owners' hospitality really transforms the experience.

Portugal Lisbon Fado Music Tasca do Jaime

Tasca do Jaime Arrow

A gritty grotto in the true tradition of fado tavernas, Tasca Do Jaime is a local favorite set far from the tourist circuit, not far from the Feira da Ladra market. The singers have been known to improvise and perform spontaneously—not necessarily the most refined expression of fado, but definitely one of the most enjoyable. There are only 24 seats, so either book in advance or show up early; after all, this a salt-of-the-earth experience matched by few other Fado clubs in town.

Portugal Lisbon Fado Music Senhor Vinho

Senhor Vinho Arrow

Senhor Vinho hosts some of the greatest names in the game, with regular appearances from fado legends like Aldina Duarte and Joana Amendoeira. Because of its esteemed reputation, the club is a bit pricier than other fado joints. It also offers higher-end food, so expect to spend a little more time (and money) here. With traditional Portuguese tiles, antique tapestries on the walls, and white tablecloth, the rustic, yet refined, decor creates an elegant atmosphere.

Portugal Lisbon Fado Music Adega Machado

Adega Machado Arrow

An important fado joint since its opening in Bairro Alto in 1937, Adega Machado has hosted the art form's greatest singers over the decades, including the likes of the great diva Amália Rodrigues. The intimate space is filled with antique furniture and traditional tile work, and you'll be hard pressed to find a more charming fado joint in town. Today, residents include other heroes of the genre including Marco Rodrigues, Joana Veiga, and Isabel Noronha. One thing's for sure: You won't see a bad show here.

Portugal Lisbon Fado Music Povo

A low-key Bairro Alto favorite that draws a local crowd of Fado enthusiasts, Povo is where you go for a spontaneous night. It's also a low-risk introduction to fado because it's inexpensive, there's always a reliable cohort of emerging performers on tap, and the crowd is enthusiastic without being stuffy. There's no cover, and the scrumptious menu of snacks and share plates makes this a great place to stop before or after dinner elsewhere.

Visting Lisbon without seeing a Fado show is like going to Rome without visiting the Colosseum. Fado is a traditional music style that became known in the old neighborhoods of Lisbon such as Alfama. This style of music was sung in taverns, beginning in the 19th century and is now a UNESCO-listed musical genre.

The most famous Fado singer is Lisbon born Amália Rodrigues, one of the largest names in fado, becoming known all over the world in the 1950s. Today, tourists can discover the world of Fado in various areas of Lisbon, but the best “fado houses” are located in Alfama and Chiado.

Here are the 5 best Fado shows in Lisbon, many that include actual tours of the Fado neighborhood of Alfama for a full experience.

1. Fado in Chiado

With over a decade of experience, Fado in Chiado was one of the first places to host a daily live traditional fado show, accompanied by a guitar and viola, with two singers, a feminine and masculine voice for a full Portuguese experience.

The show is a little less than an hour in the Chiado district and you will get to experience the melancholic vibes of the traditional musical genre of fado.  Book this ticket  to skip the line to this iconic cultural experience. Drinks are not included in the ticket price, but we recommend ordering a classic Port wine.

Top 10 Fado Clubs In Lisbon: Where To Enjoy Traditional Portuguese Music

To talk about Fado music, we will have to talk about Fado in Lisbon, where you find its most important origins.

Lisbon is in the capital of Portugal where this style of music was born. Fado is very typical Portuguese and unique which makes it so much more special to the Portuguese people.

Let us try to explain in words what Fado means.

What is Fado?

Speaking in practical terms, clear and direct, Fado is a style of music – just like Rock, Pop and RnB are. But, for reasons that distinguish it from other styles, Fado is (so) much more than just a simple style of music.

Normally, Fado is sung by a single person and accompanied by a classical guitar and a Portuguese guitar. In total, it takes three people to sing (and play) traditional Fado – something that has been changing over time.

The word “Fado” comes from the Latin word, “fatum”, which means “destiny” in Portuguese, and it is precisely what is sung in all the songs linked to this musical style.

What does Fado sound like?

It is very difficult to explain in words what this musical style sounds like since it is not similar to any other music genre. It does not have many instruments, it does not use any type of electronic device and it does not have the worldwide projection that other types of music have.

Fado is traditionally a sad song, sung only with two guitars, without microphones or amplifiers – traditionally speaking, of course. Generally, this musical style is very melancholy and, apart from being sung with a lot of feeling, it is very different from any other type of music you may have ever heard.

Even if you don’t understand the words, I guarantee that hearing this music will move you.

Fado Music

  • General Information

Fado is the musical expression of Lisbon and Portugal. The word “Fado” comes from “fatum” in Latin, which means destiny. The frustration and fatalism felt by the inhabitants of Lisbon’s humble fishing neighborhoods, ports, and taverns are reflected in this melancholic and nostalgic music.

Fado can be traced back to the first half of the eighteenth century , as a force from the city’s most humble districts that slowly but surely penetrated the whole of Lisbon. Its creation is very similar to Argentina’s renowned tango music. It has the same passion and the songs are often about women or the sea. But unlike tango, Fado doesn’t have dancers that sway to the music and is somewhat more introvert, secluded, intimate in essence and “saudade” as the Portuguese say: a tough to translate term encompassing melancholia, longing and nostalgia.

Fado remembers what is lost, Portugal ’s lost empire, the country that could have been, the man that lost his glory. Fado’s lyrics look back on the country’s history and its scarred soul, which are sung so well by great poets like Pessoa or Camoens.

Fado nowadays

After years of associating this music genre with Salazar’s dictatorship and a tourism attraction, nowadays Fado is reawakening. It has found a space in the country’s hearts and its lyrics are written by the best poets.

Fado is largely attributed to the collective memory given by Amália Rodrígues (1920-1999), considered to be the country’s best singer.

You can listen to Fados in the Fado Clubs (Casas de Fado) and you’ll find authentic Fado in the Lisbon neighbourhoods of Alfama , Mouraria and Bairro Alto .

The Best Fado in Lisbon: 11 Fado Houses to Explore

' src=

Fado is more than a music genre; it is a feeling.

You should listen to or watch a live performance to understand its magic. Keep reading this article to learn more about fado and also learn about where you can experience the best fado in Lisbon.

First of All: What is Fado?

Fado is a unique kind of music. Some say this Portuguese style of music sounds like a cross between the opera and the blues.

The word  fado  means fate or destiny, and the themes in fado are primarily about “Saudade” (the feeling of missing something), nostalgia, jealousy, and small everyday stories.

Nowadays, although traditional fados are generally nostalgic and melancholic, there are also modern fados with cheerful themes. A new generation of fado singers, fadistas, and instrumentalists have introduced new themes and sounds.

Usually, fado is sung by a single person accompanied by a classical guitar and a Portuguese guitar. The Portuguese guitar is also called a fado guitar. It is smaller than a regular guitar, a chordophone with six pairs of strings, and a pear-shaped harmonic box.

There are two main models of this type of guitar– the Lisboa and the Coimbra models. But we will talk about this a little later in the article. It  takes three to fado,  but this has been changing over time. Fado music is a type of music that will move you, even if you don’t understand the Portuguese language.

Fado is so unique that it was elevated to the Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity category by UNESCO in 201 1. Incredible, don’t you think?

The History of Fado

There are many reasons to fall in love with fado, one of which is its history . The fado roots are a mystery, but musicologists see it as a fusion of cultures, mainly African and Brazilian , stemming from Portugal’s maritime and colonial past, combined with its oral poetry tradition and, possibly, some Berber-Arab influenc e from the long Moorish presence that spanned the 8th through the 13th centuries .

History says that fado was first sung by homesick Portuguese sailors in the 15th and 16th centuries and appeared in Lisbon in the 19th century. In the 1800s, this music was present in popular contexts, sung spontaneously indoors or outdoors: in gardens, streets, taverns, and cafés. The lyrics sing the daily narratives and express urban themes.

The beginnings

The history of fado includes the myth of the amorous involvement of an aristocrat, the Count of Vimioso, with Maria Severa Onofriana (1820-1846) , a prostitute hailed for her talents as a singer. Have you ever heard about it? This legend has inspired many fado songs, poems, a novel, and a film.

Maria Severa Onofriana was the first Portuguese fado singer and guitaris t, and because of that, she became an icon. There’s nothing documented, but what is known is that she performed in brothels, mainly in Bairro Alto and Mouraria. Severa also served in aristocratic parties due to her relationship with Count Vimioso. The poet Raimundo António de Bulhão Pato, who met her personally, described her as  “an exciting fado singer like Mouraria will never have again.”

The 19th Century and Onwards

In the 1800s, fado was sung when and wherever its amateur singers took the urge ; it was a way to express everyday issues. Since then, fado began to gain expression in Lisbon’s most varied popular festivals and quickly reached the theater. In the 19th century , the guitar started to establish its position in the accompaniment of sung fado. Already a regular presence in the theater, national companies of fado singers also began to appear, which made it possible to promote more and bigger shows. At that time, the radios also played a fundamental role in disseminating this music.

Like all artistic areas, fado also underwent mutations from its original form after the May 1926 coup when it was censored . Censorship in Portugal conditioned the freedom of expression of cultural activities. In 1927, fado was licensed and regulated. A professional fado card came into existence, which is why popular fado sung in the streets has become almost extinct.

The painting “O Fado,” by José Malhoa (1910). The Best Fado in Lisbon.

In this context arose the ritual of listening to professional fado in houses called fado houses. These began to appear more clearly in Lisbon, Bairro Alto, and Mouraria from the 1930s onwards . But even with this development, the improvisation present when fado was sung in the streets was not lost. It’s very common to watch an impromptu performance in tascas around Lisbon.

The golden age of fado began in the 1940s, and at this time— until the 1960s —several talented performers emerged (and multiplied). In 1974, after the Salazar dictatorship ended , fado ceased to be a matter of debate, as its importance and meaning became consensual.

Coimbra Fado

Coimbra is a charming student city in the center of Portugal, and the University of Coimbra is the oldest one in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. Connected with academic traditions , the Coimbra Fado is an important cultural expression of this student’s city.

This fado style is very peculiar because it is traditionally sung by university students (usually men) , dressed in black academic gowns and thick capes.

It sounds pretty much like Lisbon’s Fado (the instrumental part is similar) , except for the lyrics, which are usually about memories of student life and political opinions. This music was used as an intervention among students during the Salazar Dictatorship.

Coimbra fado is also traditionally performed with the Guitarra de Coimbra, a modified version of Lisbon’s fado guitar.

Important Fado Singers

What would be the fado without the fadistas? Get to know some essential artists that made and still make fado alive worldwide.

Amália Rodrigues

Amália Rodrigues | Important Fado Singers

O fado sente-se, não se compreende, nem se explica. – AMÁLIA RODRIGUES

“The fado is felt, it’s not understandable, it’s not even explained.”  Amália Rodrigues is the world’s greatest singer of traditional Portuguese fado music and was responsible for spreading this music around the world. Amalia Rodrigues is also known as the queen of fado.

Her career started when she was only fifteen (in 1935). She brought essential innovations in the behavior and customs of fado singers, like always wearing a black dress and shawls and standing in front of the musicians. The fadista died in 1999, and her voice became immortal in beautiful songs like “Uma Casa Portuguesa” e “Chiera a Lisboa.”

Ana Moura

Ana Moura is a Portuguese fado singer who represents the new generation of famous fado singers focusing on tackling contemporary issues. Born in 1979, she was the youngest fadista nominated for a Dutch Edison Award.

One of the memorable moments of Ana Moura’s career was when she sang  No Expectations  with the Rolling Stones in 2007. Ana Moura was consecrated as the greatest fado singer of the 21st century and is the most awarded singer in Portugal. Her records are still top sellers around the country.

Marisa dos Reis Nunes (born in 1973), known professionally as Mariza, is a Portuguese singer. Born in Mozambique, she came to live in Portugal when she was three years old and moved to Mouraria, where she had her first contact with fado.

In 1999 Mariza became known when she performed Fado by Amália Rodrigues in shows organized in honor of this great Fado Queen. After this, she was invited to participate in TV shows, released several albums, and was awarded and internationally recognized for her music.

Maria do Carmo Carvalho Rebelo de Andrade (born in 1984 in Lisbon), better known as Carminho, comes from a family of musicians since her mother, Teresa Siqueira, was a famous fado singer. She is considered one of her generation’s most talented and innovative fado singers since her eclectic work shows both traditional and contemporary fado.

One of the highlights of his successful career is the album “Carminho Canta Tom Jobim” (2016), an invitation she received from the family of one of the greatest composers in the world.

Fado Bicha is a contemporary musical and activist project created and developed by Lila Fadista in voice and lyrics and João Caçador in instruments and arrangements. These musicians provide an unprecedented exploration of the fado universe and focus on overcoming the rigid genre barriers of traditional fado.

This “queer fado” defies fado’s traditions by bringing into its lyrics the stories of the LGBTI community. The duo performs worldwide and became more popular after participating in Festival da Canção 2022, broadcasted on television.

Thank for this wonderful list. May I ask–Are Fado performance always in a restaurant setting? I have mixed things about the food at Fado restaurants and I was wondering if there is a place to listen to it without the food component.

Through the "Fado Experience", I wanted to express all the passion I have for this music. The streets of Lisbon are steeped in its history. Close your eyes and the nightly laments will take you by storm . An exceptional, promising evening that will end in beauty !

Origin of Fado in Lisbon

Fado is the soul of Lisbon, its traditional music par excellence . And Portugal’s national music. The origin remains unclear. It is said that Fado, inherited from the African blues, disembarked from ships from Brazil at the beginning of the 19th century. The fruit of multiple influences (Angolan, Gypsy, Alentejano, etc.), Fado is a languorous music, born in the underworld. Sung by prostitutes to attract fishermen on payday, this siren song later became the music of the Lisbon people.

In the lyrics, the fadists speak of their daily lives, their sorrows and their happy days. Fado thus appeals to the Portuguese philosophy of saudade , which can be translated as lack, a feeling of being lost. This state of mind can also be found in the Portuguese-speaking world. For example, the morna is Cape Verdean fado ! Cesária Évora is their Amalia Rodrigues ! Nowadays in Portugal, a new generation of artists have revived the music . The new queen is now called Mariza, see video opposite .

Best Places to Visit in Lisbon with Teenagers

The best way to explore Lisbon is by foot. However, there are plenty of steep hills throughout the city, so it might take longer to walk from one place to the next.

We had good luck using Uber if we needed it, but there are also plenty of taxis and tuk tuk drivers to take you to your destination. We also used the  hop-on hop-off bus tour  for transportation one day because it has several routes through the city and saved our tired feet. No matter how you choose to explore Lisbon, we are sure the whole family will enjoy Portugal’s capital city.

1. The Oceanarium

The  Oceanarium  is one of the most visited places in Lisbon amongst families. It’s one of the largest indoor aquariums in Europe, and it’s located in Parque das Nações. The aquarium features a central tank that holds an incredible 5 million liters of saltwater!

The aquarium is designed to represent the open ocean, and you can discover many unique species of marine life in the water. Keep an eye out for rays, sunfish, sharks, and fish from around the world. There are dedicated spots where otters and penguins play and do their shenanigans.

If there are younger children in your family there are plenty of educational opportunities, and the Oceanário de Lisboa is a highlight for many visitors.

2. Go surfing

If you or your kids prefer to be in the ocean, why not try surfing lessons? Lisbon is very close to The Atlantic Ocean, and you can find several surf schools along the coast. Do you know how to surf? You can also rent your gear here.

Ericeira is a famous surf town, but Praia do Guincho is closer to Lisbon. Other popular surf spots are Praia da Adraga and Costa da Caparica.

Lisbon’s surf season runs from September to May, but that means the waves are also higher. The surf in Lisbon can be challenging during this time, so it’s best for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Did you know some of the highest waves surfed are in Nazaré Portugal? Between October and March, you can expect ginormous waves here, and it is a must-see if you like surfing.

In summer, the waves are smaller and perfect for learning how to surf. The ocean will also be slightly warmer!

The surf camps offer lessons and coaching for all levels of surfers. They also usually provide all the necessary equipment, including wetsuits and boards, and can arrange transportation to the best surf spots.

3. Take a day trip to Sintra

Sintra is a picturesque town located just outside of Lisbon, and you can easily reach it in 40 minutes by car. You can also use public transportation to reach Sintra from Lisbon by taking the metro from Rossio Train Station to Sintra at the end of the route. If you want someone else to do all of the transportation, consider  booking a local guide  to take you to Sintra.

Sintra was a popular destination for Portuguese royalty and aristocracy, and the place is famous for its many palaces and mansions. There are many historic landmarks, including the Moorish Castle, the Pena Palace, and the Quinta da Regaleira. In addition to the stunning architecture, there are fabulous gardens that you can visit.

Sintra is located within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which is also an excellent place for hiking. Along the coast of Sintra, you’ll discover some of the best beaches close to Lisbon.

If you’re up for a coastal hike, Praia da Ursa is one of the area’s most beautiful beaches! However, Praia da Adraga and Praia Grande are a lot easier to reach.

4. Visit the LX Factory

In the Alcântara neighborhood of Lisbon, you can visit the LX Factory . This complex was once a textile manufacturing factory but has become a cultural and creative hub. It’s a popular spot for all ages due to the many restaurants, shops, street art, and design studios.

Check out the sculpture Bumblebee by Bordalo II, visit the coolest bookstore  Ler Devagar  or discover the fabulous shops. There are often events such as concerts, DJ nights, and cultural festivals. So from early morning until night, there is always something to do here!

5. Check out the street art

Speaking of street art, Lisbon has plenty of it! It’s scattered throughout the city, and a  guided tour   will ensure you’ll get to see the most important displays.

Bordalo II is one of Lisbon’s favorite artists, and he creates sculptures and murals from waste. Discover the artworks of Raposa, Big Raccoon, Monkey, Pelicans, and Iberian Lynx in the city. Vhills is another prominent artist with works all over Lisbon. Brazilian artists Os Gemeos, Italy’s BLU, and Spain’s SAM3 all left a mark on the city!

Other well-known works are from Pichiavo at Rua de Santa Apolonia, the revolutionary mural by Shepard Fairey on Rua Natalia Correia, and chief Raoni Metuktire by Eduardo Kobra on Rua Alberto José Pessoa.

6. Take a ride on Tram 28

Tram 28 is an icon in Lisbon, and a ride on the historic cable car is a favorite of many! The tram has been in operation since 1914 and is one of the last remaining traditional streetcar routes in Lisbon. It was originally used to transport goods and people, but today it is a popular tourist attraction.

Unfortunately, the queue can be long, but there is also an option to take an old historical tram tour instead. The tram ride goes through some of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Lisbon! If you have a public transport card, you pay a little less, but it’s public transport, so you pay per ride. There are, however, many interesting points where you can disembark.

Examples are Miradouro da Graça, Sé Cathedral , Miradouro de Santa Luzia, and Igreja de São Vicente de Fora, which are all located in the Alfama district.

The endpoint of the train is on the other side of town, close to Jardim da Estrela. While Tram 28 is a classic Lisbon experience, it’s not the only way to see the city’s historic neighborhoods. Walking tours, bike rentals, and other forms of transportation are also available, offering a more personalized and flexible way to explore the city’s many sights and sounds.

7. Discover Alfama

Alfama  is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. It’s also a charming place with many narrow streets and tourist highlights. On top of the hill, you can visit Castelo de São Jorge (St. George’s Castle). You can walk along the castle walls to enjoy some of the best views over Lisbon! The surrounding park is full of peacocks, and around the castle are many beautiful streets.

Besides the castle, there are many other viewing platforms throughout the city. From Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia, you enjoy a stunning view over Alfama and the river Tagus.

Discover the small streets full of azulejo tiles and enjoy a night of Fado. Alfama is the birthplace of Fado, a traditional Portuguese music style that is often described as melancholic and soulful. There are many Fado bars and restaurants where you can experience this unique cultural tradition.

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, it’s fun to visit the flea markets at Feira da Ladra. And if you’re in Lisbon in June, Alfama is THE place to be. The Santo António is celebrated throughout Lisbon, but most celebrations are in this neighborhood. There are parades, street parties, and a lot of sardines!

8. Fun museums to visit in Lisbon with teenagers

Although it doesn’t rain often, having a backup plan for your family vacation is always a good idea. Lisbon has a lot of museums, especially in the Belém neighborhood! Some of the museums that teens might like in this area include –

  • Berardo Collection Museum (modern art)
  • The Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT)
  • The National Coach Museum (a collection of horse-drawn carriages)
  • The Maritime Museum
  • Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium
  • National Archaeological Museum.

A relatively new museum in Belém is  Quake – The Lisbon Earthquake Experience . This one is a bit more serious, in the sense that it’s about the destroying 1755 earthquake that hit Lisbon and many other places in Portugal.

You travel back in time to relive Lisbon’s most dramatic and transformative event and learn more about the history and science of earthquakes. It’s an immersive experience with simulators, video mapping, and interactive 4D technology. This is sure to be a favorite for teens!

Belém is also home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Jerónimos Monastery which dates to the 16th century, and Belem Tower (Torre de Belem) which was a departure point for many of Portugal’s famous early explorers, including Magellan and Vasco da Gama. While you’re exploring the area, be sure to stop at Pasteis de Belem, which has been baking the famous pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) since 1837.

If you need another place to explore on a rainy day in Lisbon, check out the  3D Fun Art Museum Lisboa . As the name implies, everything here is in 3D, which is great for pictures! You can take pictures upside down and in distorted rooms with illusions. Your imagination can roam freely here! It’s a fun activity for all families!

9. Ride the Santa Justa Lift to the Bairro Alto

The Santa Justa Lift, an iconic elevator towering over the city, offers breathtaking panoramic views of central Lisbon and beyond. This is the easiest way to get between the Baixa district and the Bairro Alto. A ride is included in a 24-hour Lisbon transportation ticket.

Once you’ve arrived at the top, walk to the Carmo Convent and the convent ruins. This building was mostly destroyed in 1755 by the deadliest earthquake in Lisbon’s history. Teens will be fascinated by the remains of this building with its gigantic arches and columns. There’s also a small archaeology museum on-site that’s included in the ticket price.

10. Outdoor Activities on the Water

If your teens want more than surfing, you can visit Lisbon beaches such as Praia de Carcavelos, Praia do Tamariz, and Praia das Avencas.

Cascais is also a lovely beach town to visit, and from Lisbon, you can travel here easily by train. You can also take the ferry across the Tagus River and see the Christ statue in Almada. There is a fabulous view over Lisbon and the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge from this point.

From here, you can easily reach Costa da Caparica, with many more beaches. Along these coastal towns are opportunities to try kayaking, kitesurfing, and canoeing. You can even  book a sailing tour  on the Tagus to enjoy a relaxing view from the water. Most ships depart from Belém, and a  sunset tour  is especially magical.

11. Try all the food!

Portuguese cuisine does not disappoint and teens will love a  Lisbon food tour  that allows them to try bite-size dishes of local favorites. If you don’t have time for a tour, be sure to make a stop at Time Out Market in the Mercado da Ribeira. This food hall showcases some of the best chefs in the city, and teens will love the variety of dishes. Our teens loved it so much, we ate there for dinner two out of three nights!

Lisbon is the perfect spot for a vacation with teens. With beaches, a rich history, unique museums, and delicious food, it’s sure to be a trip they will never forget!
