Carnival Corporation's Cunard cruise line announced it has taken delivery of its newest cruise ship, Queen Anne, from Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri.

The newbuild was officially handed over on Friday during a ceremony at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Venice. The 114,000-ton ship spans 14 decks and has capacity for up to 3,000 passengers.

Queen Anne, the 249th ship to sail under the Cunard flag – and the third built by Fincantieri – will now set sail for Southampton ahead of her seven-night maiden voyage to Lisbon on May 3. She will arrive in her homeport on April 27.

Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, said, “We are so excited to welcome Queen Anne to our fleet as she completes a remarkable quartet alongside Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria – marking the first time since 1999 that Cunard will have four ships in simultaneous service.”

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, said, “We are very pleased and eager to deliver Queen Anne to Cunard, a pioneering figure in luxury sea travel, renowned for setting new standards in oceanic voyages for over 180 years. Princess Cruises and Fincantieri Announce to Postpone Delivery of Star Princess

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

MONFALCONE, Italy, (April 19, 2024) – Princess Cruises and ship builder Fincantieri today announced the mutual decision to postpone the delivery of the next Sphere Class ship, Star Princess.

Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.

The new inaugural sailings of Star Princess will sail roundtrip from Barcelona and include an 11-day Mediterranean voyage on October 4, 2025, and a 7-day Mediterranean voyage on October 15, 2025, that precede a 14-day transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale on October 22, 2025 for the ship’s first Caribbean season. These three new cruises will open for sale on April 30, 2024.

Guests who are booked on any of the impacted voyages will be given three options: book any Princess cruise worldwide, including aboard the new Star, sister ship Sun Princess, or any other Princess ship.

Guests who elect to rebook will receive future cruise- and onboard-credits depending on the cruise they select.  Guests will also have the option to cancel and receive a full refund of the cruise fare.

Princess will protect travel agent commissions on all bookings that have been paid in full.

Star Princess is the second in the new Sphere Class of ships for Princess. Sister ship Sun Princess, built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, debuted in February and is hailed as the next level Love Boat featuring the iconic and elegant structural lines Princess is known for, while delivering an evolution of the brand with new eye-catching architectural spectacles like The Dome, the cruise industry’s first geodesic feature on the top deck, and The Sphere, the suspended glass Sphere Piazza at the center of the cruise ship.

New Norwegian Aqua Floats Out At Fincantieri

  • April 23, 2024

Norwegian Aqua Float Out

Norwegian Cruise Line and its partners at Fincantieri celebrated the float out of the Norwegian Aqua from the drydock at the shipyard in Marghera (Venice), Italy.

This marks the completion of the external work on the ship ahead of its April 2025 debut.

As per maritime tradition, two ceremonial coins were welded into the Norwegian Aqua, which historically symbolized an offering to gods and goddesses of the sea in exchange for good luck and safe passage. The ceremony was followed by a blessing by a local chaplain and celebratory champagne breaking across the ship’s hull.

Norwegian Aqua Float Out

“We are excited to celebrate another milestone with our partners at Fincantieri, who are integral to the Prima Class journey and supporting us in evolving the amazing experience we design and deliver for our guests,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Building upon the guest-favorite features of the award-winning vessels of this class, the 10 percent increase in space provides us with more flexibility to deliver more offerings and more beautifully designed venues for our guests to relax and explore on board Norwegian Aqua.”

Norwegian Aqua Float Out

At 156,300 gross tons and a length that spans 1,056 feet, the Norwegian Aqua will be 10 percent larger than the first two Prima Class ships. The ship will also offer luxurious accommodations in The Haven by Norwegian®, including the line’s first-ever Three-Bedroom Duplex Haven Suites.

“We are excited to mark this significant moment with Norwegian Cruise Line as we witness the float out of Norwegian Aqua, which represents a new chapter in our long-lasting partnership,” said Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of the Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division. “We are proud to be part of this transformative journey in which innovation, a cornerstone of our industrial plan, is one of our key points, as we strive to push boundaries and elevate industry standards.”

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled

fincantieri cruise ships

Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.

The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .

Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.

Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.

Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.

Fincantieri: Designing decarbonised ships

Marco Bognolo shares how the shipbuilder is exploring new fuels, technologies and designs as it commits to building more sustainable vessels

Fincantieri: Designing decarbonised ships

Fincantieri

By Guest | 09 April 2024

Amid the cruise industry’s widespread efforts to identify the environmentally friendly fuels of the future, shipyards are confronting the task of integrating energy-efficiency features into the designs of prototype passenger vessels. It’s important for us to stay flexible to keep on top of the ever-evolving landscape that encompasses operations, technologies, fuels, and regulations.

The progressively increasing pressure surrounding fuel transition has triggered the development of hybrid power generation systems, which integrate engines running on conventional fuels with batteries or other energy storage solutions. In recent years, Fincantieri has looked into how hydrogen fuel cells can be used as a sustainable substitute for traditional fuels in marine projects for emissions-free operations while in port. Additionally, Fincantieri is carrying out detailed engineering analyses to explore how integrating carbon capture systems into methanol or LNG-fed fuel cells could mitigate residual carbon dioxide emissions stemming from the chemical reactions involved.

Our exploration of the viability of fully electric ships and hydrogen-fuelled vessels is ongoing, particularly for short-distance routes, presenting the potential for zero-emission operations within designated areas. Recent advancements include the integration of wind-assist technologies, such as sails, into innovative projects, aiming to harness wind energy and diminish reliance on traditional engine power. Furthermore, the gradual implementation of onshore power supply in ports is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing the carbon footprint of vessels equipped with cold ironing facilities.

Fincantieri is committed to decreasing the fuel consumption of the ships it builds. This is achieved by capitalising on hydrodynamic enhancements and improving hotel load efficiency. Strategies should be tailored to the operational profile of the vessel and could include the integration of drag-reducing features like the air lubrication system. These are coupled with Fincantieri’s extensive expertise in using computational fluid dynamics methods to refine hull forms and appendages. Machine learning techniques are now augmenting this expertise, further enhancing the effectiveness of design optimisation.

Fincantieri has also extended its portfolio to include digital services, in particular tailor-made digital twins. These tools play a crucial role in the design phase, helping the team to simulate and pinpoint technical configurations to develop ships with a smaller carbon footprint. They achieve this by addressing aspects such as the reduction of electric energy demand, improvement of heat recovery, and minimisation of energy losses.

Once ships are in operation, their digital twin functions as an interactive support for crew members. Features include route optimisation algorithms and real-time monitoring systems, which help them navigate ships more efficiently to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions.

NCL and Fincantieri mark milestone with float out of Norwegian Aqua

CruiseMapper logo

NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line and Fincantieri celebrated the float out of Norwegian Aqua at Fincantieri ’s Marghera shipyard on Tuesday, April 23.

This marks a significant milestone for the first ship in the Prima Plus Class , as she was launched from the drydock at the shipbuilding yard in Marghera/Venice , making her initial contact with the water.

The float-out signifies the completion of the ship's external construction in preparation for its debut in April 2025. In a maritime tradition, two ceremonial coins were welded into Norwegian Aqua to symbolize good luck and safe passage for the vessel. The ship's hull was blessed by a local chaplain and christened with champagne.

Norwegian Aqua, at 156,300 gross tons and 1056 ft (322 m) in length, will be 10% larger than her predecessors in the Prima Class, offering more space and innovative features. These include the world’s first-ever hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide, the Aqua Slidecoaster, a digital sports complex with an interactive LED floor, Glow Court, and NCL’s most expansive outdoor promenade, Ocean Boulevard.

Additionally, the ship will feature luxurious staterooms in The Haven by Norwegian, including 3-bedroom Duplex Haven Suites.

Norwegian Aqua is scheduled to debut in April 2025 with 7-day Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral Florida , followed by voyages to Bermuda from NYC New York  and Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami Florida .

Norwegian Cruise Line Celebrates Float Out of Newest Ship, Norwegian Aqua

N orwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Norwegian Aqua, has reached a key construction milestone: It was floated out from its dry dock at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy today, touching water for the first time.

"We are excited to celebrate another milestone with our partners at Fincantieri, who are integral to the Prima Class journey and supporting us in evolving the amazing experience we design and deliver for our guests,” said David J. Herrera , president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Building upon the guest-favorite features of the award-winning vessels of this class, the 10 percent increase in space provides us with more flexibility to deliver more offerings and more beautifully designed venues for our guests to relax and explore on board Norwegian Aqua.”

The 3,571-passenger ship, which is scheduled to debut next April , will be the first in Norwegian’s larger Prima Plus Class of vessels.

The 156,300-gross-ton ship will be 1,056 feet long and will feature a wide array of amenities, including the world’s first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide, a digital sports complex with an interactive LED floor and a large 360-degree outdoor promenade.

Guests will also be able to choose from several types of accommodations, including the line’s first three-bedroom suites.

“The Prima Class is a true evolution of the brand,” says Mark Kansley, senior vice president of hotel operations of Norwegian Cruise Line . “We hear from our guests following every cruise, and they appreciate the intimate nature and greater variety of elevated spaces throughout the ship for them to relax in or explore while on vacation. We are excited to soon deliver on this next chapter of our evolution—the Prima Plus Class—and bring our guests along on our journey.”

When finished, Norwegian Aqua will offer 7-day Caribbean cruises departing from Port Canaveral, Florida. Later in 2025, it will offer 5- and 7-day voyages to Bermuda departing from New York City. From October 2025 through April 2026, it will sail 5- and 7-day Eastern Caribbean voyages from Miami.

To celebrate the float out, crews welded two ceremonial coins onto the ship, which represent an offering to ancient gods and goddesses of the sea in exchange for good luck and safe passage. A local chaplain also said a blessing, and a bottle of Champagne was smashed across the hull.

“We are excited to mark this significant moment with Norwegian Cruise Line as we witness the float out of Norwegian Aqua, which represents a new chapter in our long-lasting partnership,” says Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of the Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division. “We are proud to be part of this transformative journey in which innovation, a cornerstone of our industrial plan, is one of our key points, as we strive to push boundaries and elevate industry standards."

Norwegian Aqua is the first of the expanded Prima Plus Class.
