Wie entdeckt ein bekennender Hip-Hop-Fan die Liebe zur elektronischen Musik? Fritz Kalkbrenners künstlerische Vita ist geprägt von schicksalshaften Wendungen. Zunächst im Windschatten seines älteren Bruders, dem prominenten DJ Paul Kalbrenner unterwegs, findet Fritz schnell seinen eigenen Stil hinter den Turntables. Neben Soul, Funk und Jazz mischen sich auch immer wieder Hip-Hop-Beats in seine tanzbaren Tracks. Ebenfalls unverwechselbar sind Fritz Kalkbrenners charismatische Vocals.
Diese eröffnen ihm 2003 auch den Einstieg in das Musik-Business. Für seinen Jugendfreund Sascha Funke stellt er sich erstmals hinter das Gesangsmikrofon. Der House-Track „Forms & Shapes“ wird zum Karriereanstoß. Der breiten Öffentlichkeit begegnet Fritz Kalkbrenner im Jahr 2008. Bruder Paul verwendet alte Tapes für seinen Beitrag zum Film-Soundtrack von „Berlin Calling“. Der Song „Sky & Sand“ avanciert weltweit zum Kult-Hit – getragen von Fritz Kalkbrenners unverwechselbarer Stimme .
Fritz Kalkbrenner startet durch
Rund zehn Jahre lang fungiert das Produzieren eigener Tracks als zweites Standbein neben der hauptberuflichen Tätigkeit als Musikjournalist. Ab 2010 nimmt Fritz Kalkbrenners künstlerische Entwicklung schließlich Fahrt auf. Längst in der Club-Szene etabliert, trägt die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Berliner Label SUOL langsam Früchte. Die Resonanz auf das 2010 erschienene Debüt-Album „Here Today Gone Tomorrow“ ist überwältigend.
Analoge House-Beats treffen auf eine markante Stimme – Fritz Kalkbrenners Erfolgsformel prägt auch den zweiten Longplayer „Sick Travellin’“. Längst ist die stimmungsvolle Atmosphäre von Fritz-Kalkbrenner-Shows kein Geheimtipp mehr.
Ab 2014 führen seine Touren Fritz Kalkbrenner quer durch Europa – mit dabei sein auf Platz 6 in den deutschen Charts platziertes, drittes Studioalbum „Ways Over Water“. Über das Wasser führt ihn der Longplayer zwar nicht direkt, dafür aber in diverse Konzert-Venues in Übersee.
Neuausrichtung und eigenes Label
Zwei erfolgsgekrönte Alben später endet der gemeinsame Weg von Fritz Kalkbrenner und SUOL. Mit der Rückbesinnung auf Vintage-Equipment wagt sich der ehemalige Journalist an die Gründung seines eigenen Plattenlabels Nasua Music. Die Single-Auskopplung „Kings & Queens“ trägt unverkennbar Kalkbrenners Handschrift. Die charakteristisch eingängige Stimme macht den Popsong zum Hit.
2020 folgt mit „True Colours“ das erste in Eigenregie produzierte Album. Selbst geschriebene Lyrics tragen ebenso zum typischen Sound bei wie hypnotische Vocals. Aus seiner späten Berufung zum Electronic-Liebhaber macht Fritz Kalkbrenner kein Geheimnis. Während sein Bruder Paul und Freund Sascha tief in die Berliner Techno-Szene der 90er Jahre eintauchen, hört Fritz lieber KRS-One und den Wu-Tang Clan. Heute schöpft er aus genau dieser musikalischen Bandbreite seine Inspiration.
Jenseits der Pandemie: Zurück auf die Bühne
Nach pandemiebedingter Pause tut es Fritz Kalkbrenner den meisten Vertretern der Kreativ-Branche gleich. Endlich ist er wieder dort zu finden, wo er sich am wohlsten fühlt – auf der Bühne. Wer eines der begehrten Tickets für Fritz Kalkbrenner ergattert, darf sich auf atmosphärisch dichte Live-Sets vor vollem Haus freuen.
Doch nicht nur seine musikalischen Vorlieben, auch seine jahrelange Tätigkeit als Musik-Journalist bei TV- und Radio-Sendern wie MTV, MDR und Deutsche Welle prägen Fritz Kalkbrenners Werk. Die Erkenntnis, dass trotz des exzessiven Musikgenusses im Job nur wirklich wenige Alben einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen, spornt Kalkbrenner nach eigenen Aussagen an.
Musik-Perlen produzieren, die in Erinnerung bleiben – diese Ambition teilt Fritz Kalkbrenner ganz sicher mit vielen anderen Künstlern sämtlicher Genres. Dass ihm dies gelingt, kann Fritz Kalkbrenner auf Tour vor begeistertem Publikum in den Clubs, Arenen und Open-Air-Venues des Landes immer wieder unter Beweis stellen.

Super Evebt nit tollen Gästen. Eine junge Dame hat es mir besonders angetan. Unsere Hände haben sich ständig berührt und unsere Blicke getroffen. Leider hab ich dich aus dem Auge verloren am Ende. Wie finde ich dich wieder? Anfang 20 rotes Top weisse Nikes Gildemeister Brille mit runden Gläsern. Ich bin der rechts neben dir.
Ein wirklich schönes Konzerterlebnis
Ich kann nur berichten, dass wir einen ganz tollen Abend hatten. Die Stimmung war sehr positiv und der Sound (offenbar dank selbst mitgebrachter Anlage) erstaunlich gut. Der Vor-DJ hat Spaß gemacht und Fritz hat eine ganz tolle Show abgeliefert, die von vielen Videoelementen passend untermalt wurde. Die Stimmung war äußerst positiv bei einem sehr gemischten Publikum. Lediglich eine offenbar stark angetrunkene Dame, die lieber reden anstatt tanzen wollte nervte zeitweise etwas. Dafür kann der Künstler aber natürlich nichts. Zu hören gab es einen schönen Querschnitt aus den Alben und auch einige etwas "peppigere" Versionen. Die Highlights sind natürlich meist die Stücke mit Gesang. Auf dem sehr langen Set war das ca. jeder dritte Song. Von mir aus hätten es noch ein paar mehr sein dürfen, denn Material hätte Fritz noch gehabt. "Void" und "In this game" haben z.B. gefehlt. Beides zusammen, also mixen und singen ist live aber sicher auch anstrengend, wenn man alleine performt. Und das will Fritz sich bei seiner DJ Ehre offenbar nicht nehmen lassen. Dann macht es auch nichts, wenn nicht jede Zeile auf Punkt sitzt. Nach ein paar Songs war er aber gut drin und das Timing passte. Stücke wie "Back home", "Sky and sand" und "Facing the sun" waren einfach wunderschön und haben das begeisterte Publikum zum Mitsingen motiviert. Absolute Gänsehaut. Es war mein erstes Fritz Kalkbrenner Konzert und wird ganz sicher nicht mein letztes gewesen sein. Absolute Empfehlung, wenn man sich auf die eher ruhige Musik wirklich einlassen kann. Die Getränkepreise waren leider "kölntypisch", aber das weiß man, wenn man hinfährt. Insgesamt ein runder Abend von dem wir sehr glücklich wieder nach Hause gefahren sind.

An einem nahezu auffällig gewöhnlichen Tag erblickt Fritz Kalkbrenner im Jahr 1981 das Licht der Welt in Ostberlin. Die Auswirkungen der Revolution über den Mauerfall bis hin zur deutschen Einheit sind prägende Bestandteile seiner Kindheit. Nach der Grenzöffnung entwickelt sich sein Lebensraum Berlin immer schneller zu einem kreativen Hotspot und bietet dem jungen Fritz Kalkbrenner den perfekten Nährboden für seine Entwicklung, dessen Ausläufer noch Geschichte schreiben.
Inspiriert durch seinen Bruder Paul taucht er langsam aber sicher in das Berliner Nachtleben und die Techno Szene ein. Ein eigener oszillierender Kosmos aus treibenden Beats und pulsierendem Freiheitsgefühl im Flackern der Stroboskoplichter sozialisiert den jungen Fritz Kalkbrenner und prägt seine innige Liebe zur elektronischen Musik sowie ihren Wurzeln und Ausläufern.
Erstmals stellt er sich dann 2003 im Studio hinter das Mikrophon und nimmt für seinen Jugendfreund Sascha Funke und dessen House Track „Forms & Shapes“ Gesangsspuren auf. Mit der Veröffentlichung der Single auf Vinyl inklusive eines ebenfalls großartigen Paul Kalkbrenner Remixes und großen Zuspruchs aus der Szene ist der Startschuss für die beeindruckende Laufbahn von Fritz Kalkbrenner gefallen.
Seismische Wellen über Kontinentalplatten schlägt Fritz Kalkbrenner nahezu ungeplant, nachdem sein Bruder alte und fast in Vergessenheit geratene DATs (Digital Audio Tapes) nach Aufnahmen durchsucht und dabei Fritz Kalkbrenners Gesangspuren von „Sky & Sand“ entdeckt. Im Zuge der Soundtrack Produktion für einen damals kleinen Berliner Underground Film wird „Sky & Sand“ 2008 Teil von „Berlin Calling“, erlangt weltweiten Kultstatus und darf als hoffnungsgebende Hymne einer ganzen Generation bezeichnet werden.
Zu dieser Zeit reift auch der Wunsch selbst Musik zu produzieren, um neben seinem Gesang auch die perfekte musikalische Symbiose aus eigener Hand zu kreieren. Bereits in 2010 erscheint nach weiteren Vinyl-Singles sein Debutalbum „Here Today Gone Tomorrow“ – warm umhüllende elektronische Clubmusik im Soul Kontext, die den Nerv der Zeit trifft.
Überwältigende mediale Resonanz und begeistere Hörer folgen auf diese erste Albumveröffentlichung. Entnommene Titel wie „Facing the Sun“ und „Kings in Exile“ avancieren zu essentiellen Produktionen und formen den unverkennbaren Signature Sound von Fritz Kalkbrenner: Umarmende House Beats in Fusion mit seiner markant melancholisch gefärbten Stimme, dabei immer fest im Club-Kontext verankert und zeitgleich perfekt für das Home Listening.
Im Rahmen des Albums tritt Fritz Kalkbrenner erstmals auch live auf und spielt im deutschsprachigen Raum sowie europäischen Ausland. Nur zwei Jahre später erklimmt er mit seinem zweiten Album „Sick Travellin‘“ die Top 10 der deutschen Albumcharts und manifestiert sich ebenso in der Radiolandschaft als wegweisender Live Act. Auch das dritte Album „Ways over Water“ geht erfolgreich an den Start und belegt #6 der deutschen Album Charts und liefert zugleich mit „Back Home“ die erste Top20 Single. Durchweg gefeierte Tourneen in Europa sowie auch in Übersee sichern Fritz Kalkbrenner nun einen festen Platz im Olymp der großen weltweit anerkannten Acts der elektronischen Musik.
Sein ebenfalls erfolgreiches Album „Grand Départ“ schließt 2016 nahtlos an seine unzähligen Auftritte und Tourneen an, die ihm eine stetig weltweite wachsende Fangemeinde bescheren. Imposante Konzertmitschnitte für ARTE und das französische CERCLE Format vor der beeindruckenden Kulisse des Schlosses „Domaine de Chantilly“ gehen Hand in Hand und unterstreichen den mittlerweile enormen Stellenwert des Künstlers Fritz Kalkbrenner.
Dem Trend voraus präsentiert Fritz Kalkbrenner in 2018 sein rein instrumentales Album „Drown“. Auf alten Drummachines und Vintage Synthesizern kreiert er einen zeitlosen wie cluborientierten Sound – eine ergreifende Reminiszenz an seine frühen Tage in Berliner Underground Clubs.
Sein eigenes Label „Nasua Music“ gründet Fritz Kalkbrenner Ende 2018 und verschafft sich auf diese Weise einen zusätzlichen Freiraum für seinen unermüdlichen kreativen Output. Parallel folgen Veröffentlichungen auf weiteren wichtigen Labels sowie Zusammenarbeit mit namhaften Künstlern. Folgende Single „Kings & Queens“ sowie das Album „True Colours“ in 2020 stoßen auf große Gegenliebe und positionieren sich erneut auf #6 in den Album- und oberen Single Charts.
Während Fritz Kalkbrenner in 2021 den Schwerpunkt auf Deep House legt, geht seine Single „King Curtis“ nicht nur an Hand der Streaming-Zahlen durch die Decke. Dann 2022 gelingt Fritz Kalkbrenner abermals die Verschmelzung aus elektronischer Musik und authentischen Pop-Avancen: „In the Morning“ steht wie kaum ein zweiter Track für Gänsehaut Feeling, dezent gestrichen in den ergreifenden Farben eines Sonnenaufgangs.
Weitere Gigs und Single Veröffentlichungen säumen den Karriereweg gleichfalls in 2023. Direkt aus dem Herzen veröffentlicht Fritz Kalkbrenner mit „Moments Gone“ eine Deep Melodic Produktion für die Clubwelt. Mit der Vocal-fokussierten Single „Waiting For The Sun“ erfüllt Fritz Kalkbrenner eine ungeahnte Sehnsucht und verankert sich über Monate im Radio Airplay sowie den Speakern der Fans.
Seine gleichnamige erfolgreiche Tour zieht die Crowd in die großen Venues der Metropolen im In- und Ausland und sorgt für beachtliches Medienfeedback. Zeitgleich entlässt Fritz Kalkbrenner seinen Oldschool House Track „Set You Free“ in die Welt, welcher vor tanzbaren Vibes und rollendem Groove nur so strotzt. Begleitet von einem gefeierten Musikvideo, welches weltweit auf Platz #1 der besten Musikvideos auf Clubbing TV in 2024 schießt, geht die Single mit globaler Berichterstattung einher und zementiert die Vielseitigkeit des Ausnahmetalents. Fritz Kalkbrenner
Fritz Kalkbrenner was born in East Berlin in 1981, spent his teenage years there and discovered the Berlin techno scene following in the footsteps of his brother Paul. His most successful track came about by chance when brother Paul was looking through old tapes for recordings and discovered vocal tracks from "Sky & Sand". In the course of soundtrack production for a then small Berlin underground film, "Sky & Sand" became part of "Berlin Calling" in 2008 and gained worldwide cult status. Based on this experience, Fritz Kalkbrenner set out to produce his own music. The musical formula consisting of his distinctive voice and the analog, mostly "warm" sounding house beats matured into his musical signature, which was well received in clubs as well as "home listening". Since then, numerous albums and many EPs followed, which he will present to us at DEICHBRAND 2023 on the Electric Island.

Paul Kalkbrenner (11 June 1977) is an electronic music producer from Berlin, Germany that is known for his unique take on downbeat and techno music.
Paul Kalkbrenner became interested in music, especially techno music, at a young age and by the time he was 13 years old he was playing records at clubs around Berlin. At school he studied musical theory as well as learned how to play the trumpet. Right after school Kalkbrenner worked a job in the television industry so he could earn money to buy musical equipment. Once he was able to fund his basic equipment he started writing and performing his own music with one of his best friends, Sascha Funke.
When the electronic music producer Ellen Allien heard Kalkbrenner playing his music at a party she introduced herself to him and later signed him to her record label BPitch Control. Kalkbrenner released his first EP under the record label in 1999, which was labeled “Friedrichshain” and released it under his alias, Paul dB+. After releasing some singles under the Paul dB+ alias he released his first full length album, “Superimpose” under his real name. The same year he released his debut album he also released his second studio album “Zeit”. The album contained many of the thumping bass lines and punchy drum rhythms that techno music is known for, but it also contained instances of ethereal sounding synths that created a nice ambience.
After Kalkbrenner released his third studio album “Self” in 2004 he was approached by the film director, Hannes Stohr, who asked him to create the soundtrack for his film, “Berlin Calling”. Stohr later came to the conclusion that Kalkbrenner would also be perfect for the leading role in the film and Kalkbrenner accepted the opportunity for his first film role. The film was a success and demonstrated Kalkbrenner’s talent at acting. The soundtrack to “Berlin Calling” was also immensely successful partly due to the wildly popular single “Sky and Sand”, which ended up going platinum and reaching to the top of the charts.
After the success of “Berlin Calling”, Kalkbrenner decided to part ways with BPitch Control and create his own record label, Paul Kalkbrenner Musik, as a platform to release his music. “Icke Wieder”, which was released in 2011 was his first record to come out on the label and was highly successful reaching the No. 2 spot on the German music charts as well as reaching gold status. In 2012 Kalkbrenner released the album “Guten Tag”, which topped the charts in both Switzerland and Germany.
Kalkbrenner is considered to be a live musical act as opposed to a DJ because he breaks down his tracks as they are presented on stage. In 2010 Kalkbrenner embarked on a 12 city tour where he sold out most of the dates and he documented the experience in a film called “Paul Kalkbrenner 2010 – A Live Documentary”. Paul Kalkbrenner has also spoken at events like the International Music Summit, which is an EDM conference that takes place in Ibiza, Spain.

As I walked into the club to see Paul Kalkbrenner the lights were already going crazy and the disco ball was flashing and the show had not even started. This is the kind of show that Paul brings when he performs live. I was on the dance floor when Paul came out, he did not look unusual or anything. He had a plain black shirt on and a clean shaven face. He shouted Are you ready? to us and all us were clapping and dancing right away.
He started off the set in a huge way, getting the lights and disco balls really going with his song 'Sky and Sand'. This song may not have any lyrics but the beats were what you could dance to all night long. Paul was promoting his newest album 'Guten Tag' during this time and since 'Sky and Sand' was a little older and not on the album I figured he wanted to get it out of the way before he started his newer music. Paul kept the beat going all night long.
There were people jumping and dancing and I personally was so hot and exhausted at the end of the show I knew I had to get out of the club. This was all worth it though, Paul knows how to fill everyone in the crowd with energy and life and he did just that.

Producer of electronic musician Paul Kalkbrenner is another example of as to why Germany is so esteemed when it comes to its exportation of techno, electronica and dance. He is a staple appearance at some of the world's most iconic dance events and festival and he is always assured to bring an ethereal, twisted show to the adoring crowds.
Often playing late at night, these settings suit the music well and as the crowd make their way into Paul's smoky, luminous tent it feels as though you are descended into a surrealistic wonderland. The beats are repetitive and pulsing as they rise up through the feet of the audience and keeps the whole audience moving intently. He has timed the whole show perfectly in order to maximise the danceability of his show whilst also having chance to demonstrate some of the darker techno mixes found on the likes of 'Maximalive'. There is of course large cheers for his European hit 'Sky And Sand' yet the show as a whole will be what leaves crowds excitedly discussing afterwards.
W O W. With the risk of sounding like a crazy person, this was by far the most amazing musical event of a solo artist that I have ever attended. Having been a fan of Paul Kalkbrenner for so many years, seeing him live had been on my wishlist for a long time. It was worth the wait, as he exceeded my every expectation.
To say that I always enjoyed his music would be an understatement. What he can do and make you feel with his music's vibrations is out of this world. To me, he is the only artist that can do that. I might be biased and subjective, but I am grateful I got to experience this live.
I definitely recommend attending a PK concert to anyone - it's really something else.
I missed a work event to see Paul Kalkbrenner playing. I have paid over £90 for the ticket, went all the way to east London, have been waiting there for the whole day for his performance there (I should say that I generally don’t like electronic music and he is the only reason I bought ticket for the festival) and he didn’t play in the end!!! I was extremely disappointed and felt like my time and money were completely wasted.

Audience waited for a long time (21-0:30), 2 DJ-s played before (not good at all) but the wait was worth it.
Very good Vibes. Service at Halle 622 was very friendly but a bit chaotic, very long time waiting for entrance, what was very confusing... and for drinks (min. 30 Min. in a cube) so many Place to improve...

Awesome! Good venue, powerful sound. But i wish they would have let me out and back! A bit long to be stuck in here for twelve hours. I came early because i didnt know the line-up order before i get there. Searched everywhere but couldn't find the info.
Great Music and concert.
Unfortunately it seemed like Paul was quite tired and the power and energy wasn't really there.
Also useful to know is that he mostly played his popular songs and did not perform a lot of live mixing.
Great Music, great Sound quality and great Lightshow. He started and ended his show with all his songs that you would expect to hear and in the meantime he played many songs from his new album. Can't wait to see him live again.
Paul Kalkbrenner itself was great but the context of this kind of festival is to avoid. Food and drinks are terrible and too expensive, unacceptable for a 10-hours live music event. Better to go and see him in Germany.

Berlin’s Paul Kalkbrenner has charted a career path like no other. A techno talent, who over the course of two decades has emerged from the underground, to top charts, act in and soundtrack a movie, headline festivals and amass millions of fans, all while refusing to compromise his grand techno sound.
Kalkbrenner is synonymous with dance music, he came of age in a golden era for techno, turning twelve when the Berlin Wall fell, and spending his teenage years raving, before starting to DJing and collect records as electronic dance music’s first tidal wave spilled throughout the city. He realized early that DJing wasn’t for him, and has focused on producing and playing his own music live ever since.
Though he rose to popularity in the peak of techno’s ‘Berlin era’, and his early career was associated with Bpitch Control, his fan base was never confined to this scene. By the time he played the lead in the seminal movie ‘Berlin Calling’ and its soundtrack smashed records across Europe he had already released multiple albums (Superimpose, Zeit, Self) and built a significant following globally.
With a catalog that now includes eight albums, over 137 individual tracks and numerous remixes, Paul is one of the unique electronic artists who can deliver the ebb and flow of a dancefloor journey using only his own music. His transcendent live performances have seen Paul break down traditional electronic music barriers, headlining festival and arena stages typically reserved for rockstars. He was the first techno artist to play Tomorrowland’s typically commercial main stage, and was invited by the German Federal Government to perform to 400,000 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
After creating his own label in 2009 and releasing two albums and a live documentary, Kalkbrenner signed to Columbia Records in 2015. He was the first artist to be given unfettered access to the Sony Legacy vault, enabling him to rework previously-unsampled icons like Luther Vandross and Jefferson Airplane on his album ‘7’. In 2022, after leaving Sony, Paul will again release music independently.
Traditionally known as an album artist for much of his career, releasing eight LPs, registering 3 No.1 overall records and entering the Top 10 overall charts in 10 countries and selling 1.5 million units, Kalkbrenner has experimented with other formats including a viral mixtape compilation (Back To The Future - downloaded upwards of 3 million times), and more recently a spate of singles, No Goodbye, Speak Up and Parachute.
His seminal single Sky & Sand continues to hold the German singles record for most weeks at #1 (121 weeks). Despite the major releases and mainstage performances, Paul’s career remains intertwined with techno. He is a figurehead and pioneer in the electronic music scene, an uncompromising artist who has endured despite dance music’s fickle trends and obsession with the new.
