The foodie's guide to Hobart

16 December 2022

Time

There’s a lot to love about Hobart. The small-town vibe, the culture, the people, but above all else, you’ve got to love the food.

There are few places that celebrate local produce so proudly and with so little pomp, as Hobart. Here, Tasmania’s natural beauty is delivered right to your plate. And given the bounty of produce that is grown on the city’s doorstep, Hobart is truly a locavore’s delight .

Narrowing down your bucket list of food experiences in Tassie, beyond the capital’s top restaurants  and burgeoning cafe scene is no easy feat. But to help ease the burden of responsibility we’ve teed up a list of Hobart’s heavy hitters worthy of your stomach space (and time).

From bustling produce markets brimming with seasonal goods to cool climate wineries, seafood safaris, cookery schools and oyster farms, here’s just a handful of the best foodie experiences Hobart has to offer, all best enjoyed while both curious and hungry.

Barilla Bay Oyster Farm

One of Tasmania’s many gourmet claims to fame, the island state’s famously clean waters are perfect for harvesting oysters. You’ll find oyster farms freckled all over the island, most proffering the Pacific and Angasi, but few are quite as close to the action as Barilla Bay.

Just a seven-minute drive from Hobart International Airport, Barilla Bay Oyster Farm is a long-standing family-run operation that offers tours that take in the oyster lease and provide deeper insight into how the bivalve is farmed and graded, as well as a half a dozen samples of the finished product, for quality control purposes, naturally.

The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery

A much-vaunted cooking school and restaurant in New Norfolk, The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery , is a 30-minute drive northwest of Hobart, is peak Tassie. Restaurateur Rodney Dunn – who also happens to be the former food editor of Gourmet Traveller magazine – not only runs some of The Agrarian Kitchen’s cooking classes, but he also keeps bees, raises pigs and helps tend to the extensive organic veggie gardens, berry patch and orchard.

Almost everything you can find on the plate at this Tasmanian restaurant has been pickled, fermented, butchered, grown, or churned onsite. And for anything that falls outside of The Agrarian’s remit, Dunn relies upon a trusted network of local fishermen, farmers and artisanal producers who follow the same strict organic principles, and love for fresh Tassie produce.

Moorilla Winery

As one of Australia’s premier cool-climate wine regions, it would be remiss to speak of Hobart’s many gourmet experiences and not mention its neighbouring wineries in the same breath.

Moorilla Estate, of MONA Museum fame, is one such venture worth writing home about, only 12 kilometres to the north of Hobart’s CBD. Established in the late 1950s, Moorilla boasts some rather dashing river views, as well as plenty of opportunities for tastings and tours, or duck into one of the museum’s handfuls of eateries.

Pennicott Wilderness Journeys’ Tasmanian Seafood Seduction

Not only would I consider this trip aboard a Pennicott Wilderness Journeys boat a must-do for seafood lovers – it’s also a must-do for just about anyone and is without a doubt one of the best travelling experiences I’ve ever had, so including it in our foodie’s guide to Hobart was a no-brainer.

Tourism legend Robert Pennicott and his knowledgeable, attentive and passionate (I could seriously go on all day) team of local guides have been sharing the wonders of Tasmania with travellers since 1999.

The Tasmanian Seafood Seduction tour voyages down the Derwent River. Along the journey, your guides will gift you with knowledge of the wildlife, scenery and deserted beaches. However, it’s when you dock that things get really memorable.

Not only will you be treated to some of the most incredible seafood in the world, but it will be prepared before your very eyes. Part of the experience will see your guide literally jump in the ocean, snorkelling to catch your meal. Talk about farm to table.

You will then proceed to ingest the best wild abalone, rock lobster, oysters, salmon and sea urchin that money can buy. I promise.

The Pennicott Wilderness Journeys tour showcases Tasmania’s five-star seafood culture at its very best and purest, and it was here that I really discovered what all the fuss was about.

Salamanca Markets

Nestled between the sandstone facades of old warehouses sits the famous Salamanca Markets.

Held on Saturdays between 8.30am and 3pm, thousands of tourists and locals flock each week to taste some of the best food from the 300-plus stallholders have to offer.

If you’re keen to undertake the tour de Tasmanian cuisine, there are several places you should stop.

For starters, get yourself to the stall dubbed Provenance Growers. Horticulturalist Paulette Whitney supplies vegetables, herbs and edible flowers (yum?) to the leading restaurants on the island. Here you’ll find several unusual edibles that are often forgotten on our shopping lists. Think pink fir potatoes, climbing butter beans, tomatillo and potato onions.

Secondly, it’s hard to get a sense of Tasmanian street food without getting your hands on a scallop pie. A number of bakeries about town claim to have perfected this Tassie classic, so just to be fair, be sure to sample a few while you’re in the area.

Also at the markets is several other famously delicious culinary experiences. Pick up some Bruny Island Oysters and Tasmanian cherries, and wash it all down with some aged gin.

Hobart’s The Tasman gets top gong from Gourmet Traveller

The Gourmet Traveller Annual Restaurant Awards have honoured Peppina, the signature restaurant of The Tasman, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Hobart with the State’s top award of Tasmania’s best restaurant.

Peppina offers a culinary experience like no other, showcasing Italian-inspired cuisine with a local Tasmanian twist, combined with a warm and welcoming hospitality that has grown a loyal following from locals and visitors alike. The win stands as testament to the huge achievement of the team in bringing together world class service and exceptional Tasmanian produce, led by renowned Tasmanian Chef Massimo Mele as Culinary Director.

“We are deeply honored to receive recognition on this level, it is a testament to the hard work of the whole team who bring the Peppina experience to life,” says Mele. “The awards hold meaning not only for the restaurant but also for the extensive network of local producers and suppliers. These valued partnerships form the foundation of Peppina’s culinary excellence, delivering the best ingredients for the culinary team to work their magic.”

Sommelier Michael Fisher says “We have a tight knit hospitality community in Tasmania, we all work together and share in each other’s successes. We are thrilled to see our hard work is paying off with this honour, which cements our position as a leader in Tasmania’s dining scene.”

Celebrating the best and brightest in Australian dining this year, the country’s leading chefs and restaurant personalities came together to celebrate the annual awards, which are Australia’s longest-running restaurant awards and a highlight of the hospitality calendar.

18 Of The Best Hobart Restaurants To Hit Up In 2024

By Ben Tyers

16th Apr 2024

gourmet traveller hobart

With its world-class arts, food and wine scene, Hobart is the beating cultural heart of Tasmania.  So, if you're looking for somewhere to fuel up before a big day or unwind after a day of exploring, here are 14 great restaurants and cafes you need to visit when you touch down in Hobart.  Just remember to book ahead to avoid the heartbreak of missing out and to always check the restaurants' websites for updates.

Tatler Lane

Tatler Lane Hobart Restaurant

A new cafe, bar and restaurant from the Sweet Brew team has opened in Launceston, in the form of Tatler Lane , the latest venue to open in Launceston’s new dining precinct Tatler Arcade. Featuring its roastery on site, Tatler Lane has a focus on educating the community about coffee, from how the bean is cultivated to how it ends up in your cup. Open seven days a week as a cafe and five nights a week as a bar, stay tuned because Tatler Lane has future plans to introduce an evening dining showdown too.

Battery Point

gourmet traveller hobart

Every city needs an ode to greasy pizzas and cocktails. Melbourne has Heartbreaker's and Sydney had (tear) Frankie's Pizza. Ti Ama is Hobart's equivalent, a takeaway pizza joint full of beans, life and a slate of delicious goodies to match. Here, the pizza over has been decorated to resemble a glorified, gigantic disco ball, pizza boxes are hot pink and there's a $49 per person all-you-can-eat pizza menu which reins supreme. To add, you'll also find a stellar antipasti menu will favourites like fresh mozzarella and wood-fired peppers, plus freshly housemade pasta too.

The team here also crank a holy tiramisu as well which is well-worth your time. If the sweet tooth still kicks, we're going to need you to chow down on the Budino-baked custard—tastes as good as it sounds.

Franklin Wharf Restaurant

Murray street pier.

Franklin Wharf Restaurant

Franklin Wharf Restaurant is one of the newer establishments in the harbout and sits about a three minute walk from Salamanca Markets. Part of the Pub Banc hospo group (who are also the godfather's of places like Post Street Social and Cargo), this newbie has opened up in a space which previously sat empty for five years (before this, it was home to Blue Skies Cafe). The all-day dining venue has a mix of spaces, most notably the dedicated 'oyster bar'. On top of this, you'll also find a menu stripped with big bowls of pastas, Porterhouse steaks and crayfish rolls.

Collins Street

Dier Makr Collins Street Hobart Restaurant

Heading into Dier Makr you’ll find ‘Gram-worthy dishes aplenty. And as we’ve come to expect in Tasmania, the menu features dishes made only from locally sourced ingredients. Don’t miss visiting the wine room to pick your tipple (the wine options are practically endless), or even grab one of their delicious cocktails.

Macquarie Street

gourmet traveller hobart

Fico is your destination if you’ve got Italian on your mind. What you’ll find at Fico are classic Italian dishes you’d totally expect but with a bit of a Japanese influence on some of the dishes, which will keep you on your toes.

The Lounge By Frogmore Creek

Hunter street.

Frogmore Creek interiors

Located on Hobart's waterfront, The Lounge by Frogmore Creek boasts sweeping views just begging to be uploaded to the 'Gram. Brought to you by the talented team behind Frogmore Creek Wines, you know you're in for an absolute treat. Aside from the wines, the menu is just as spectacular and lends itself to a true Tasmania taste showcasing the best local produce.

Kosaten Hobart

Castray esplanade.

Kosaten Hobart sashimi plate

At Kosaten you’ll find traditional Japanese favourites with a dash of modern creativity thrown in for good measure. You come to Kosaten for the sushi but the dish that really caught our attention? The tempura oyster. Yep, you’ve never tried anything like this before and in our opinion, this dish is well worth the flight to Tassie. But that’s not all, in true Japanese style you’ll be ordering from an iPad and your food will arrive on your own bullet train.

Landscape Restaurant & Grill

gourmet traveller hobart

You’ll find Landscape attached to The Henry Jones Art Hotel on Hunter Street. Inspired by, and featuring many artworks by the English painter John Glover, Landscape dishes up magnificent ingredients like aged local wagyu, Tasmanian lamb, or freshly-caught seafood with all being expertly cooked over coals on their Asado grill.

Ginger Brown

Ginger Brown Restaurant Hobart

This popular and bustling cafe in South Hobart is an absolute must for anyone chasing a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day ahead. With everything from loaded croissants to house crumpets on the menu, Ginger Brown is sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery & Store

New norfolk.

Agrarian Kitchen Hobart

In the old town of New Norfolk found just 35 minutes out of Hobart,  The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery  serves refined seasonal dishes in a serene dining room—inside a former mental asylum. Book ahead for weekend lunches or buy their takeaway picnics to enjoy while soaking up the sun on the front lawn. The clever team also runs a celebrated cooking school and farm that is certainly worth checking out while you're there.

ALØFT

Brooke street.

gourmet traveller hobart

ALØFT can be found above Brooke Street pier and boasts epic views of Hobart’s gorgeous harbour.  ALØFT’s menu changes with the seasons and celebrates the raw nature of Tasmania, so you’ll find the finest local produce on show here. From the fine food to the ambience and views, ALØFT is an experience to remember.

Urban Greek

Murray street.

Real talk: the ‘Gram factor at Urban Greek is top-notch. We’re talking industrial vibes, moody lighting, exposed wooden beams and seriously cool artworks featuring Greek mythology. As for the menu, well that’s equally as snap-worthy with dishes like charcoal octopus from Pirates Bay, traditional zucchini and vegetable croquettes with ample cheese, and stuffed Tasmanian blue-eye trevalla.

Patrick Street

Templo Restaurant foodscape Hobart

Set in the back streets, Templo has room for only 20 diners at one time, so best to book if you’re looking to pop in. The charm of Templo is its communal dining table where you’ll sit with people you’ve never met to enjoy a delicious meal. The menu features 8-10 dishes daily with ingredients sourced within a 50km radius of the restaurant. Expect Italian and other European inspired dishes.

Local Pizzatas

Maroni road.

gourmet traveller hobart

Clearly good food and culinary skills run in the family because Local Pizzatas is owned by Bella, the daughter of well-known winemaker Stefano Lubiana so you know you’re in for a real treat. The vibe here, on the northern fringe of Hobart near Mona, is relaxed and seriously cool. As for the pizzas themselves, they’re crafted with 100% GMO-free Tasmanian flour to give that signature flavoursome chew.

Born In Brunswick

Elizabeth street.

Born In Brunswick Hobart cocktail and lunch plates

Found in North Hobart,  Born In Brunswick is about as close to a Melbourne cafe that you’ll find in Hobart. Great coffee and amazing food all set against an exceedingly stylish backdrop make this spot a must-visit destination when in Hobart. Oh, and you won't want to miss their brunch cocktails.

Billy’s Burgers

Billy's Burgers

Get set to carb load and make all your burger dreams come true at Billy’s Burgers . At Billy’s, you’ll find every burger combo under the sun, from a classic beef burger to cheesy mushroom and sticky pulled pork. Then it’s time for fries and a sundae (this is a burger joint after all) and wash it all down with a boozy drink. Is there anything Billy’s doesn’t have?

You know where to eat, now you need somewhere to stay. Here are Hobart's best hotels .

Inspired by the island

Landscape Restaurant & Grill creates unforgettable dining experiences in the heart of Hobart’s Hunter Street waterfront precinct. Our love for the exquisite produce of our island home has inspired our goal: to constantly push the benchmark for premium dining in Tasmania. Adding to the unique quality of our dishes is the unrivalled environment in which they’re served – the historic walls of the IXL jam factory, surrounded by the iconic art of John Glover.

Land, water and colour

Much of the inspiration for Landscape came from the artworks of John Glover – striking, unforgettable paintings that capture the life and beauty of the young Tasmanian colony in the 19th century. Today the John Glover Prize is an annual award that celebrates contemporary landscape paintings, and a selection of these prize-winning artworks are installed in the Private Dining Room in Landscape.

The John Glover Art Prize Winners

Simple, elegant classics.

“A feature of Landscape – the Asado Grill – is fired up daily with a selection of sherry, bourbon or port casks from the Tasmanian Cask Company. These seasoned timbers which we char and smoke over, give a unique flavour to the dishes.

Our menu of reimagined classics showcases the best of the season and our sole purpose is to offer a memorable dining experience. Our kitchen is ingredient focused, sourcing from our well-established group of Tasmanian farmers. The menu features the very best of their produce”.

Head Chef Nathaniel Embrey *Menu subject to change without notice

*Please be advised that a 10% surcharge applies on all public holidays.

The wine list at Landscape is curated by our Sommelier. We make sure that old world, new world and emerging niche wines are ever-present and always available. Beyond our wines, we offer an extensive collection of spirits, boutique beer, whiskey, cognac and top shelf options. We consider the experience of our drinks to be as important as the range we offer, which is why Dave Newman, our Restaurant Manager, offers subtle and attentive service to every table. *Wine list subject to change without notice
