“Awesome App - A must have app for anyone who enjoys learning more about the area they are in. While being entertained by great stories and information. Great job!!!”

“Great idea! - What an innovative idea! So enjoyed my first tour (of Red Mountain Park) by using your app. I look forward to using it at other attractions in the future and have high hopes that all cities will offer this first class format to help enhance the experience of traveling.”

"We used this app in Jackson,WY and through Teton National Park. As we drove through Teton NP, we listened to the historical story of the area. It gave us so much more understanding of the area and added so much to our drive. It’s really easy to use and added so much to our trip. Would gladly use it again."

“Awesome app - This app is great when traveling around Wyoming. The stories told make you appreciate what you are driving or walking through! A must have whether you are a local interested in the history and wildlife or a tourist on the go!”

- Travelstorysgps lover!

“Excellent app! - I love this app! We used it on a recent trip through Grand Teton Park and it provided us with a depth and breadth of information (regarding the park) to which we would not otherwise have access! I look forward to seeing what other tours will be added. Great work!”

- IloveWyomingandtheTetons

“Fantastic road tripping tool! - My family used TravelStorys to plan our trip to Jackson Hole and this app was indispensable! We listened to several of their tours through the Tetons and absolutely loved it. The app spoke to us while driving, so we didn’t have to look at the phone once!”

“Great app for traveling families - When you approach a destination, the app will automatically start, you don’t need to do anything but listen. If you don’t want the audio, you can read the text. There are also great photos for each section. The stories are quirky and fun and both kids and adults will find them interesting.”

- onealmond.com

“Great app with great potential - I can’t wait until there are even more stories! Great idea.”

- Ray Kennedy

“Eye opener My family and I have traveled to Wyoming many times but we always seemed to visit the same old places again and again. However this app allows me to check out new places I've never even considered before. I guess there is a lot more to the state than Yellowstone. Can't wait to plan new adventures.”

“Indispensable! Used this app to plan and then tour the Tetons and surrounding areas. Our whole family was entertained and we learned so much! And it's free. Thank you TravelStorys.”

“I like it, great idea! Music and Radio only lasts so long on road trips. This app is awesome because it tells you stories about what you are driving by, and gives you cool info about the area. Great idea!”

- William Davis

“Loved this! My sisters, mom, and 7-year-old niece used this app as we visited the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. It was wonderful! It really helped us feel a connection to the mountains and places we toured. I want this for everywhere I go now!”

- R. Tynker

“Love it, learn the history of where your traveling too via this awesome storytelling app. Love the vocals for the great Smoky Mountains! Grateful!”

- JillianPress

“Great! Local travel info & stories. I love this app. I learned a lot about the Jackson, Wyoming area & Grant Teton Nat’l Park. I have already recommended it to folk who connect with my own local Jackson based business, xcDogs. Everyone I speak to about it loves the idea…”

“Excellent adventure stories for the Grand Tetons”

- Rick Aune

"For new visitors paddling on a sunny day, the new TravelStorys app is an opportunity to understand the ecological and culture significance of the area. At home or in the classroom, the voice narration coupled with photos can entice and enhance the experience before a canoe even launches."

- NewJersey.com

"Great app for visitors & locals - This app rocks. Learned so much about Jackson Hole and the surrounding areas just by having my phone on me. Anyone who is adventuring in the wild Wild West should consider having this app on their phone. You’ll be surprised with how much you can learn on your trip!"

- Austin Hopkins

Neat app! Great for a frequent traveler or history buff! Very interesting stories about pikes peak! Can't wait for the Garden of the gods tour!

What to Expect

Not only does the Garden Isle of Kauai’s wondrous set of natural features make it distinctive from the other islands, its place in Hawaiian history makes it truly unique.

There is no road to drive completely around Kauai in a tidy circle. Once you see the amazing Na Pali coastline you will understand why. So we recommend dividing the island into 2 portions for your sightseeing adventures. Each deserves one day of your time.

Feel yourself slip into the friendly laid back personality of the island as you visit North and Eastern Kauai and the beach resort areas of Hanalei and Princeville .  The tour continues all the way to the end of the road at  Ke’e Beach .

Sample delicious smoothies and shave ice flavored with local tropical fruit, while you stroll the shops in the vibrant town of  Kapa’a .  A trip to view Wailua Falls , one of Kauai’s most popular, is not to be missed.

In Southern and Western Kauai you can drive under a canopy Tree Tunnel of 500 trees, over a 100 years old, and see the island’s most famous blowhole;  Spouting Horn.

Pick up a local souvenir as you wander the shops and galleries in the artsy town of  Hanapepe .  We travel up Kauai’s volcanic mountains to Grand Canyon of the Pacific, the superb  Waimea Canyon  and continue to the awe-inspiring viewpoints of  Koke’e Park  perched above the  Na Pali Coast .

It’s also the best place to see endangered monk seals , often lazing on north shore beaches and around Poipu .

North and East

This describes the region that is essentially everything north of Lihue and the Airport and the famous Wailua Falls. This includes the town areas or Kapa’a, Princeville and Hanalei. You can easily fill a whole day exploring this area and the North and East section describes this in more detail.

Feel yourself slip into the friendly laid back personality of the island as you visit North and Eastern Kauai and the beach resort areas of Hanalei and Princeville. The tour continues all the way to the end of the road at Ke’e Beach. It’s also the best place to see endangered monk seals , often lazing on north shore beaches.

A trip to view Wailua Falls , one of Kauai’s most popular and just 10 minutes from Lihue, is not to be missed. Sample delicious smoothies and shave ice flavored with local tropical fruit, while you stroll the shops or watch surfers in the vibrant town of Kapa’a.

There are several excellent and calm (usually) beaches to enjoy as we follow the coastline. Anini and Secret Beach are just a few that will be pointed out.

The views from Kilauea Lighthouse at the northernmost point of the island are amazing and this location also acts as a bird and marine life refuge.

The resort area of Princeville has some secret spots and is also a terrific place to enjoy a sunset. And continuing this way, the hippy-esque town of Hanalei with it’s beautiful cresent shaped sand beach is not to be missed.

The county has introduced restrictions for parking and driving to the end of the road at Ke’e Beach. Pre-book the shuttle for easiest access and take the tour with you for exploring Tunnels, Ha’ena Beach and Ke’e.

South and West

Waimea Canyon and the lookout from the Kalalau Lookout down to Na Pali are the most amazing sights when touring this section of the island. But there are also many great beaches, artsy communities, a blowhole and the resort area of Poipu that are excellent to explore. Expect to spend a whole day to enjoy the many stops.

Heading south and west around the Garden Isle of Kauai shows us the island’s remarkable beauty from its volcanic formation, to the pristine beaches shaped by the ocean.

Start with a short loop through Kauai’s historical and current capital of Lihue and Nawiliwili. We’ll pass one of the best family beaches on the entire island and can see an ancient pond built by mythical characters. If you are here with an appetite, we’ll point you to the legendary local favorite saimin place

Continuing towards Poipu, we’ll drive under a canopy Tree Tunnel of 500 trees, over a 100 years old, and see the island’s most famous blowhole; Spouting Horn. There are also 3 excellent beaches to enjoy in the resort area of Poipu.

Pick up a local souvenir as you wander the shops and galleries in the artsy town of Hanapepe. Do some beachcombing on Glass Beach to find worn down old, colored sea glass that accumulates here or examine the salt ponds and take a refreshing swim at Salt Pond Park.

Did you know that the Russians nearly came to rule Kauai – we’ll share that story and you can visit the crumbling ruins of the Russian Fort Elizabeth just outside of the historically important town of Waimea.

Then we’ll climb up Kauai’s volcanic mountains to Grand Canyon of the Pacific, the superb Waimea Canyon and continue to the awe-inspiring viewpoints from Koke’e Park perched above the Na Pali Coast. Expect to spend at least a couple of hours visiting the variety of viewpoints.

The final option is to continue to the end of the road past the legend of Barking Sands Beach to Polihale State Park, but beware the road is often in poor condition, and you might choose not to venture all the way to the beach.

Driving back, there is all different commentary to keep you entertained.

Suggested Start Location

There are no official start locations for this tour, simply join the route wherever is closest to you. All driving directions are provided in the tour audio.

Suggested Time

If dividing the island into 2, we would recommend 5-8 hours for each section. The driving time without stops from Princeville to Waimea Canyon is about 2 hours, so expect to spend a full day out if starting in the north part of the island.

Driving Distance

For the north and eastern section, the driving distance is about 40 miles one way from Lihue.  From Lihue to Waimea Canyon is approximately 65 miles.

WHAT IS KAUAI POPULAR FOR?

Kauai is Hawaii’s fourth largest island and is also known as the Garden Isle, for its thick tropical rainforest. Kauai’s wondrous set of natural features make it distinctive from the other islands, and its place in Hawaiian history makes it truly unique.

WHAT IS THE BEST MONTH TO GO TO KAUAI?

The month you plan to visit Kauai will largely depend on your preferences as a traveler. If you’d like to avoid the busiest times, then skip the summer months of June, July and August. For many, the best months to visit Kauai are the shoulder seasons between September and November or from April to June, when the weather is pleasant and rates are lower. The rainy season from December to March is peak travel season and the most expensive, followed closely by summer.

IS KAUAI A GOOD ISLAND?

Kauai is less developed than the other Hawaiian islands , with less flights here and much of the island inaccessible by road. As a result, many people seek out Kauai for an unplugged vacation to avoid the hustle and bustle of the other islands.

WHAT SHOULD YOU NOT MISS ON KAUAI?

Some of the must-visit places on Kauai include the superb Waimea Canyon (also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), the awe-inspiring viewpoints of Koke’e Park perched above the Na Pali Coast, seeing endangered monk seals lazing on the beaches near Poipu and popular Wailua Falls.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED ON KAUAI?

While you can see the main attractions of Kauai in three days , a week-long trip would allow you time to enjoy the sights, try some new activities and, of course, relax to your heart’s abandon. If you are short on time, and happy to be constantly exploring, then three days would be the minimum amount of time you’d need to see the major sites.

Trip Planning

Reservations required.

Due to the extremely limited parking availability, you must either reserve a parking space or make a shuttle booking online to access Ha’ena State Park, including Ke’e Beach, Ha’ena Beach and the Kalalau Trail to Na Pali. Bookings open 30 days prior and schedules may vary, visit gohaena.com for more information and to make a reservation.

Reservations are also required to visit Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, where the Kilauea Lighthouse is located. Bookings open 60 days prior and advance bookings are mandatory , reservations typically sellout one week prior. Visit recreation.gov for more information and to make a reservation.

Saved Oahu for us

We spent most of a month on the Hawaiian islands and Oahu was our last island and definitely our least favorite. Since my Husband permanently uses a wheelchair, regular tours and beaches are mostly unavailable to us, so we really rely on exploring on our own. The north shore circle tour was our favorite day on Oahu. You think of Oahu as just mostly Waikiki and Honolulu, which was too much city for us. This tour showed us that more natural side of Oahu and was, like every other Shaka app we’ve used, absolutely flawless. We also enjoyed the Honolulu city walking tour. We got a lot of great historical information. Interestingly, we had a private guided tour of the Missouri and Pearl Harbor and on the drive there and back, she was talking about Hawaiian history and culture and in my head, I kept saying, Shaka already told us that. So I will say, the information is spot on to what you would receive from even a highly rated tour. The Shaka apps are maybe my favorite apps ever in terms of how useful, interesting and easy to use. Worth every penny and then some. We used it on 4 islands and it greatly enhanced our trip. Now that we’re home, we find ourselves missing Shaka and his corny jokes and laugh.

“Uncle Shaka” was an Amazing guide!!

I don’t usually leave reviews (or buy apps) but this one is amazing. Our first time to Oahu and we purchased both. Perfect guidance and loved the little tidbits of info, suggestions and humor as we passed areas. (No constant talking though). We were so impressed by the easy to follow directions and I lost track how many times we said we loved the app and what a great purchase it was. We would never have been able to plan out the routes as well on our own. We usually take hop on/off buses in new cities and this was similar with the narration and ability to see all the hot spots (and some secret ones!) in a nice loop without a bunch of backtracking. We did the tours in 3 VERY full days but had we stopped and actually swam at the beaches and did the full tours at Dole etc. it easily could have been a week or more worth of activities. We would have spent $500+ on a couple days of tour buses to see the places we were able to go to on our own with this app plus we could do it in our own time. The app literally guided us from the road in front of our hotel to the destinations and back. Buy it- you won’t regret it.

Developer Response ,

So happy to hear you and your family enjoyed your Shaka Guide tour. Mahalo for your review and hope to see you all on more Shaka Guide adventures! 🤙😍🤙

Best app ever!

I purchased both the North Shore and the Circle Island tours in Oahu and 2 of the Hana Tours and the Haleakala tour in Maui. In would have given them 5 stars just on customer service, I had some questions and send them an email before we came to Hawaii and I was impressed by how Andrew replied to all my emails and how helpful he was. So 5 stars before I even used the app. Now that I actually did the tours I would give them 10 stars if it was available. This was our second time in Hawaii last time we used Gipsy Guide, it was ok but Shaka blew them out of the water. “Eddie” as we call it took us to places that you don't read about on blogs or find in Pinterest, there were a couple of places we went to that we were the only tourists, in some we were the only ones there. There was a lookout point at Haleakala (this is our second time there) that Eddie told us to stop at, again we were the only car in the parking lot, and this was the best look out in history, the view were breathtaking, and the pictures.. WOW, It was awesome! We keep saying, Hey, Eddie would go LOL. Thank you Shaka Guide 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Shootz brah, so glad you enjoyed the tour! We work hard so that you can enjoy your vacation. Eddie would go. Aloha.

Travel + Leisure / David Hattan

We’ve come a long way since the U.S. Department of Defense started launching GPS to map satellites into space in the 1970s. Now, the vast majority of us have a GPS navigator in our pockets thanks to a smartphone and apps like Google, Apple Maps, or Waze which get us from point A to point B. However, a specific GPS navigation device can still be very helpful depending on how you travel.

If you’re taking road trips, it’s advantageous to have a dedicated GPS map in your vehicle if you don’t already have one in the dash. Car-mounted GPS devices also have useful features like dash and rear cams, live traffic reports, police stop data and TripAdvisor reviews. Meanwhile, handheld GPS navigators are potentially lifesaving for hikers, climbers, and other off-grid adventurers where cell phone reception won’t work. (Plus, they usually have better battery life than your phone.) Last but not least, wearable GPS smartwatches allow you to stay on track both on the trail and with your fitness goals. That said, take a look at the best GPS navigators for travel below.

Best Overall

Garmin drivesmart 66.

It’s the best all-around GPS for drivers and there are many ways to customize it.

You’ll need to pay extra to add international maps.

Garmin is the clear leader in GPS navigators (as you can probably tell from this list), and the DriveSmart 66 is the U.S.-born company’s sweet spot device. Available in 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-inch screens, it spans a range of price points and additional features for every user. Its operating system and maps are very clear and straightforward, with the ability to search and check reviews on TripAdvisor. You can talk to it with the help of Amazon Alexa, or by downloading the GarminDrive app on any compatible smartphone to play music, listen to audiobooks etc.

There are other ways to customize this device, too — for example, you can add traffic info and a dash cam, or pair it with a rear backup camera . A wonderful feature for U.S. drivers is national park information, which maps out picnic spots, visitor centers and more. The only thing is, if you’re not in North America, you’ll have to pay extra to add world maps when you’re on Wi-Fi.

The Details: 6 x 3.4 x 0.7 inches | 6.17 ounces | Car mount | Up to 1 hour battery life

Best Large Screen

Garmin drivesmart 86.

It has a big, beautiful 8-inch screen with all of Garmin’s excellent features.

Its size means it may not be the best option to bring on a plane or when there’s limited packing space.

If your vehicle doesn’t come with an in-dash GPS, this device is the next best thing. Available with a frankly huge 8-inch screen, the DriveSmart 86 will guide you in clarity. It comes with all the same features as the 66 above, including the possibility for traffic and a dash cam. Again, it’s best for users in North America, especially if you’re in a city where live cameras point out parking spots. That said, you can add world maps for an additional fee.

Another benefit of this GPS device is an additional USB port for charging phones or other devices in the car.

The Details: 7.6 x 4.7 x 0.77 inches | 10.41 ounces | Car mount | Up to 1 hour battery life

Best Handheld

Garmin gpsmap 67i.

It’s an awesome device with plenty of features for many kinds of outdoor adventures.

It’s quite expensive.

Whether you’re climbing the Himalayas or Andes, sailing the high seas, or just want to be a safe hiker, having a handheld GPS device is not just a good idea — it could be a matter of life and death if something goes wrong. This Garmin GPS Map 67i has your back with a huge number of features, including satellite messaging, SOS, topographic maps, and a whopping 165 hours of battery life. It’s also super durable, with chemically-strengthened glass.

If you just need a budget-friendly, handheld GPS device, check out the Garmin eTrex SE instead.

The Details: 2.5 x 6.4 x 1.4 inches | 8.1 ounces | Handheld | 165 hours battery life

Most Durable

Garmin gpsmap 64sx.

It’s a tough handheld GPS device with the features necessary for most travelers.

It has just 16 hours of battery life.

For a budget-friendly handheld device at a more pocket-friendly price than the above 67i, check out the Garmin GPSMAP 64sx. It has some of the same features but with a much shorter battery life (16 hours) and no satellite messaging or SOS. However, it’s IPX7 water-resistant (submerged to 10 feet for 30 minutes) and reinforced, making it great for backcountry hiking. It also has most of the features needed and industry-leading GPS accuracy.

For an extra $100, you can add an 8MP camera , too.

The Details: 2.4 x 6.3 x 1.4 inches | 7.7 ounces | Handheld | 16 hours battery life

Best Wearable

Garmin fenix 7 pro solar.

It has plenty of features to amp up your training regimen.

You can’t receive calls unless you have Bluetooth earphones or a headset.

The Garmin Fenix 7 Pro Solar almost shouldn’t be called a watch — it’s more of a supercomputer for your wrist. It charges with the sun, has an amazing amount of training insights from coaches, and most impressively, it shows GPS maps as you walk. It also has cycling maps with turn-by-turn directions, surf tide info, sleep monitoring, and so much more. Plus it’ll pair with iPhones or Androids for notifications, as with an Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch.

One major point of note is that there’s no mic in this GPS, so you can’t receive calls.

The Details: 1.65 x 1.65 x 0.56 inches | 2.22 ounces | Up to 11 days battery life or 173 days on battery-saver mode

Best for Cycling

Wahoo elemnt bolt v2.

It’s simple to use and more affordable than its competitors.

The battery life is pretty short and there’s no touchscreen.

Sure, Garmin also has plenty of GPS cycling computers, but for the sake of change and affordability, check out the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt V2. Super simple to use, this GPS navigator has buttons on the sides and pairs with a phone app for extra features. The display might be small, but it’s quite bright and the Summit Climbing feature is a neat way to inform you when inclines are coming up.

One major downside is the 15-hour battery life, which is probably longer than your smartphone but shorter than those of other GPS devices on the market.

The Details: 2.2 inches | Bike mount | 15-hour battery life

Tips for Buying GPS Navigators

Consider the type of trips you’ll use it on.

While the technology of GPS navigators (aka satellite geo-positioning) is somewhat similar across devices, each device’s features vary substantially. Most apparently, the display size of GPS navigators will determine how and where you use it, so make sure you know before buying whether you want to use it for driving, cycling, hiking, or off-grid adventures.

Decide how you’ll carry and use it

Not every GPS device is built for international traveling. For instance, Garmins require you to pay extra for world maps. Also, big screens might not be the best thing to take in your carry-on. So make sure portability and connectivity are your priorities if you plan to use a GPS navigator for travel.

For many people, Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze on your smartphone is enough. But if you’re in rural areas without reception, a GPS navigator is more trustworthy. GPS navigators also come with other useful features like live traffic reports and police stop alerts, topographic maps, and perhaps most importantly, a much longer battery life than smartphones.

Using a car for your journey? GPS devices are also helpful if you don’t have an in-dash system.

In-car GPS devices usually plug into a USB jack while portable devices are either rechargeable or battery-powered. A useful feature that we’re starting to see more of is solar charging which can be important if you’re spending time away from guaranteed power outlets.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
