Graphite Design Tour AD BB Shaft Review

Introduction.

The 2024 Graphite Design Tour AD BB is a high-performance golf shaft designed for players who want to achieve a low launch and low spin. It is made from premium materials and features a unique construction that provides a combination of power, control, and feel.

Table of Contents

The Tour AD BB is available in a variety of weights and flexes to fit a wide range of golfers. It is a popular choice for Tour players, as well as amateur golfers who are looking for a shaft that can help them improve their game.

Model Breakdown

There are currently 4 models of the Graphite Design Tour AD BB shaft:

Tour AD BB 50

This is the lightest model of the Tour AD BB shaft, and it is designed for golfers with slower swing speeds. It is available in R2, R1, and S flexes.

Tour AD BB 60

This is the mid-weight model of the Tour AD BB shaft, and it is designed for golfers with average swing speeds. It is available in SR, S, and X flexes.

Tour AD BB 70

This is the heaviest model of the Tour AD BB shaft, and it is designed for golfers with fast swing speeds. It is available in S and X flexes.

Tour AD BB 80

The Tour AD BB shafts are all designed to promote a low launch and low spin, but the different models are tailored to different swing speeds and playing styles. The lighter models are more forgiving, while the heavier models offer more control.

If you are not sure which model of the Tour AD BB shaft is right for you, it is best to consult with a golf club fitter. They can help you assess your swing speed and playing style and recommend the best shaft for you.

The Tour AD BB features a number of technologies that contribute to its performance. These include:

  • A high-strength carbon fiber material that provides a stiff flex and high ball speed.
  • A tapered construction that increases stiffness from the tip to the butt, promoting a low launch and low spin.
  • A DI Technology tip that provides a soft feel and enhances control.

The Tour AD BB is available in the following weights and flexes:

  • 50g R2 (Lite), R1 (Regular), and S flex
  • 60g SR (Stiff Regular), S, and X flex
  • 70g S and X flex
  • 80g S and X flex

Pros and Cons

  • Low launch and low spin
  • High ball speed
  • Controllable
  • Can be too stiff for some golfers
  • Not as forgiving as some other shafts

I have the opportunity to order a driver from Titleist and I've decided to go with this model based on its fairly low spin characteristics and what seems to be incredible feel.

I currently have 2 D+62X (one untipped and the other one tipped 1.25'') and a Matrix 6M3XX (tipped 0.5''). They all play to the same length and SW (45'' and D5) in a 913D3 8.5* (I'll be ordering the same head as I need a back up driver).

The Diamana and Matrix offer pretty good performance. The Matrix is lower spin (sometimes too low) but feels dull/dead (butt soft and really tip stiff at the same time). It’s fine when I'm swinging well and when it's warm outside but other than that, it lacks kick. The D+ spins a fraction too much (see numbers below) but gets the job done. I played all my tournaments this summer with the D+62X tipped 1.25’’. That’s the one I liked the most out of the 3 shafts I have.

Based on its description, the ADBB should play in between the D+ and 6M3 in terms on flight which is what I am looking for.

Ideally, I'd like the ADBB to be as stable (same flex) as the D+ that is tipped 1.25''. In short, I'd like it to play in between the untipped D+62X and the 6M3XX.

I've been recommended to tip the ADBB6X 0.75'' (total) to a max of 1'' (total). What do you guys think? I'm leaning toward 1''. I know it's a small difference but I like to be precise!

Info’s about my swing (trackman with D+):

SS: 118 (high 125) à recommend tipping for a 120 mph average.

Club gets right at parallel at the top. Fairly aggressive transition. Late release.

Thanks a lot

I play the AD BB 6x untipped. Very low and boring flight...Carry on level is 260 yds. I would recommend that you do NOT tip it, but go straight in initially. If you need to tip it that can be done later. You can have a butt extension added to make up for any loss of length. Can't be untipped if you find it too stiff and you have it tipped initially!

I know this sounds obvious, but why not just tip it 7/8"? Obviously you have concerns with 3/4" and are unsure of a full 1" so split the difference and go from there. You can always remove the shaft and take more off later. And the 1/8" length needed if you do can be made up with a grip that has a thicker end cap, or just leave an extra 1/8 on the butt of the shaft. Tipping is far more sensitive than butt trimming in my experiences, but to each their own. I would most definitely tip it though. A straight in installation as suggested above would be softer than what you are looking for flex wise.

According to Tom Wishon, 99% of golfers are not sensitive enough to tell the difference between 1/2" of tipping so the chances of you noticing the difference between 1/4" is virtually nil. Go with 3/4", if you really need more, you can always pull it and tip some more but you can never go back if you tip too much to start.

Something I'd look at as well (And maybe you have) is going to the 7x. Little more stability especially with your swing speed. Good luck!

I had forgotten about Tom's article. Altough I know it would be more stable, I prefer to stay with the 6 rather than the 7. My swing reacts better to a 65-70 grams shaft compare to 75+.

Your idea is actually interesting. I could order it tipped 1'' total but then specify that 7/8'' is better than 9/8''. Since 0.25'' tipping changes nothing noticeable, I'd make sure that it's firmer than standard. So far, i'm still leaning toward 1'' total which is only 0.5'' more than what Titleist does stock. That way I'll make sure that it is slightly stiffer than standard while not feeling like rebar! At 120mph SS, the more I read the more I think 1'' is the number. Keep it coming guys!

I played a BB7 for awhile in my 913D2 and I would recommend that you order it tipped 1/2" at least. You might even want to go a full 1".

I have both 1" tipped and untipped BB drivers. They play quite differently. I can definitely feel the flex stiffer in the tipped. Personally I prefer the untipped. I would recommend that you have it untipped and add extra length. You can try it out and see if you need more stiffness. If so, tip 1/2 inch and test. Repeat. I guess this is only possible if you are willing to re shaft in order to find the perfect flex.

After playing the di and bb, the bb does feel a bit stiffer than the di, im currently using di 7x and bb 7s and they feel pretty comparable to each other. I have The same ss and style as you on the monitors and the range but on the course I probably stay closer to 110-112 range. The bb 7s holds up just fine so going with an x you may want to start at an extra 1/2" instead of a full 1". Just order the club 1/2" longer and if more tipping is needed you have the room, if its good chop the but and your done

Mat, have you considered the 6.2 TS? It seems with your speed and potential transition it would be a good option. Also, 69 grams. What about the Phenom NL 60? That might be good, too!

At your speeds, with your swing description, go 1". That suggestion based off a lot of local experience with different swing types with BB series of shafts and various tipping locally.

I wanted something a little softer hence the ADBB6 choice. Good suggestion tho!

In addition to tipping, I've found the driver head weight can make up to 1 full flex difference. A 190 gram driver head CPM'd at 275 untipped and when I put my 205 gram head it dropped the CPM down to 265 untipped. I think I would probably have to tip my BB 3/4-1" to get it back up to 275 CPM in a 205 gram head. 15 grams of head weight make a 10 cpm difference from my experience with the BB. In my opinion, The Fuji 6.2 Tour Spec X has a much smoother feel then the black tie with much more kick. Another nice alternative is a Fuji Fuel Tour Spec 6x. It plays slightly stiffer then the 6.2 TS untipped. It has a little higher ball flight then the 6.2 TS from my experiences, but both are low spin

Has anyone tried the Tour AD BB-6s or BB-7s? The BB-6 is 65 grams and the BB-7 is 74.5 grams. They're a low spin, low/mid launch. I'm looking for something to mix & match with my R15/M1 and possibly bring the ball flight down some. I'm currently gaming the Tour AD DI-6s. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

I have the 7s and enjoy the shaft but prefer my Grandura with similar specs. If I were you I would wait and grab a Grandura 510 when they be come available. Graphite Design Tour AD BB I just tested the BB6 last night and while too low for me it was lower than the MT i was comparing it to. The M1/BB6s combo I tested was at a playing length of 44.5". I will actually be waiting to compare it against a DI6s so I'll be subscribing to this thread to get a better grasp of what to expect. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

For the record, I hit MOON SHOTS with my drivers, always have. I'm notorious for a high ball flight and I'm looking for something that may give me a little more rollout. The DI-6s is a high launch/low spin shaft. I hit high, but flat shots with it. I wonder if the BB-6s would bring my flight down enough for the added rollout results I'm seeking? Click to expand...

The DI-6s is a high launch/low spin shaft. I hit high, but flat shots with it. I wonder if the BB-6s would bring my flight down enough for the added rollout results I'm seeking? Click to expand...

HAve the 7s in my 3 wood and it is absolutely my fav club shaft combo I have at the moment. Feels so smooth throughout the swing Will definately bring your ball flight down but with my experience it still has a good trajectory and doesnt knuckle like some low ball flight shafts I have tried

Mr.t - i pity the fool.

I play the BB 7S in my 2nd driver (windy days) or during the slightly softer fairway times as the additional run out is always appreciated, preferred this over the 6s as I found the slightly heavier weight suited my swing, the lower launch/spin over my DI 7 comes in super handy in the wind as my home course is on an air force base and as such they require the trees to be kept very low and small so we really feel the wind when its about, my dispersion rates with the BB are quite tight ........ if you fin this is a little too low have a look at the AD MT as this sits nicely in-between the BB and the DI - thinking about dropping one into my 3W

OH...I forgot to mention.... I've always been fitted into the lighter shafts in the mid-60's gram weights, so I went ahead & pulled the trigger on a BB-6s. My buddy got me a really fair price, I think. $150 to my door. Considering Graphite Design has the suggested MSRP @ $500 and I've seen them for $300+ other places.

I play a bb6s in a r15 430 10.5! Coming from a vts silver I can say it's lower launch and less spin! I abso love this combo I would say that my old sldr Miyazaki kuala blue was longer but this think is a fairway finder!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I know ...older thread, but I just started gaming a AD GP in my Bridgestone J40. Similar to the BB but feel-the-difference smoother. I tried the BB and it just didn't feel right . The new AD GP (I got the 60 X) and I'm playing it at 44 1/4". It's a monster and the X has made all the difference in dispersion. I'll post a separate thread on my experience in a day or 2. I play a BB 7x SS is 118 & absolutely love this shaft. What I learned is low launch or high launch shafts ultimately come down to your swing & strike pattern & what you swing more consistently on the face. I hit the DI 6x today same height but was not as consistent on my strikes due to being to soft. TXG has a awesome link on this worth a watch!

Graphite Design Tour AD UB Shaft Review

There’s one day each year that I count down the days in excitement. My birthday? No. Christmas? Nope. It’s the day when Graphite Design releases their new shaft! New for 2022, the Tour AD UB shaft (nicknamed “Up and Beyond” ) will present an option for players looking for a mid launch and low/mid spin rates. They offer up a new twist on their classic paint scheme and the most modern materials and shaft technology.

Look 13

Bold and blue! The Graphite Design Tour AD UB comes in with a sparkling and vibrant light blue color scheme that fades into a deep silver at the tip. This blue has a metallic shimmer to it and has notes of teal and sky blue depending on what light you’re in. (You can tell I’m a whiskey fan if I’m detecting “notes” in my…golf shaft paint colors too…) It’s a similar look as the nearly all black Tour AD XC from two years ago with a darker paint job, but your eye will catch the more neutral silver color when addressing the ball. While the Tour AD UB may not have the boldness of the bright orange of the hyper popular Tour AD DI , it’s as distinctive as ever.

Feel 4

How Does it Feel?

I’ve been able to hit most of Graphite Design’s shaft lineup, and I’d describe the Tour AD UB as a stout but responsive golf shaft. What I’ve always liked about this brand is that they’ll accurately present what their shafts will feel like (in relation to other Graphite Design shafts) so you can choose what you like best. For example, most will describe the Tour AD BB and the Tour AD XC as feeling softer in the hands and firmer in the tip, or the Tour AD DI feeling all around “smooth”. The Tour AD UB feels as they say it does – medium through the hands and mid section, then a bit stiffer in the tip section . In my testing and on course experience, that describes it well.

I won’t describe this shaft as particularly smooth, and I don’t detect a huge “kick” to it either. It’s a pleasing feeling, kind of a “really hard hit” if that makes sense . It definitely feels a bit more stout and substantial than most Graphite Design shafts I’ve tried. While I’m no bomber, I’ve settled in to 70g X-Flex shafts for most models. The 6X is all I can handle here. For a long time, I’ve been waiting for a profile that can dial me in that last little bit. It’s now highly possible the Tour AD UB can give my gamer some challenges for 2022!

Graphite Design Tour AD UB 2

On-Course Performance

For the last 18 months or so, I’ve played 75%+ of my rounds with the Graphite Design Tour AD TP. I love it because it has a fun, smooth kick to it and I can really feel where the clubhead is during the swing. It pairs well with my preferred driver head, and I get reliable contact and distance with it. However, at times it launches a touch high and a sometimes a bit spinny (described as mid/high launch and low spin profile). That’s where the Tour AD UB comes in…

This shaft has seemed to hit the right trajectory windows for me so far. It’s that true mid-flight that I’m looking for, but not a hint of ballooning. Lately I’ve been trying to eliminate the left side of the course, so I attempt a straight ball or a power fade. When I square it up, the Tour AD UB gives me exactly what I want, and it’s deep bombs down the right-center of the fairway. If I leave the club face a bit open, yeah, it’s got a stiffer tip section so it will exaggerate the fade, but that’s on me.

Graphite Design Tour AD UB 11

Final Thoughts – Graphite Design Tour AD UB Shaft

With the Graphite Design Tour AD UB, we have another worthy addition to an already loaded menu of premium golf shafts. This year’s offering fills the need for a mid flight, mid/low spin profile with their usual visually recognizable styling. It may not have the most distinct feel to it, but it’s the golf shots you hit that matter most.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve become a big fan of Graphite Design shafts. Once you become familiar with the brand, you can make those subtle adjustments among shafts, flexes, and weights without significantly changing the feel like you would if you went brand to brand. I bet you if we did a “blind taste test” on the range, I could pick out a Graphite Design! Oh and if we’re doing a taste test, make sure to bring the Lagavulin, the Springbank, and the Bruichladdich too.

Hi Jon, would you say the AD UB is comparable to the Ventus Blue (if you have tried the Ventus Blue)? I moved from the AD DI 6X to the Ventus Blue 6X this year and was hoping the AD UB would be similar to the Ventus Blue based on the Medium+, Medium+, Stiff+ butt to tip profile. Thanks!

' src=

This is actually something I can comment on considering I’ve used the AD DI a lot and the Ventus Blue is in the bag a lot too! All 6X btw. My opinion is that they get firmer and a wee bit harsher as you go along from the AD DI to the Ventus Blue to the AD UB. Performance in all three is great. I typically hit the AD DI longest, but it can get offline. The Ventus Blue is a bit more controllable, and I too am hoping the AD UB can kind of steal away a few more yards but maintain the control. By my “eye test”, all of them seem to launch in about the same window and I don’t have any issues with too much spin on any of them. TL/DR, if you like those two shafts, I think you’ll like the AD UB too. Plus, it looks rad.

' src=

I gamed the VENTUS BLUE 6-X all last year in TSI3 9 deg. I was at 65-75′ apex with 155-158 mph ball speed 2200 rpm typically. With the AD-UB-6-X it kicks the ball higher for me, 85-95′, same spin, and tighter dispersion. Loved the VENTUS BLUE but I find the AD-UB-6 more optimized for my game and a slightly higher launch.

' src=

Both great shafts and both I’ve a had a lot of time to play with. Your take is pretty similar to mine. Both really good products!

' src=

For me Tour AD DI still my best choice since 2014

There’s a reason it’s still winning tournaments on the PGA Tour. It’s legendary.

' src=

Great review. When u say not overly smooth, is there any shaft in your mind that is similar in feel?? Cheers

Hard to say, as I’ve not hit EVERYTHING out there. In relation to other Graphite Design shafts, most of them are butter smooth and have a satisfying kick. I don’t often play other brands at this point. I think my comment above was that it’s a “hard hit” feeling.

' src=

Hey Jon, your comment comparing and contrasting the AD UB with the Ventus Blue and AD DI was super helpful. I wondered if you might similarly share some thoughts on how the AD UB stacks up against the AD HD?

The two shafts I’ve used the most over the last year have been Ventus Blue and AD HD. I love, I mean LOVE, the feel from the AD HD. I like a mid-soft shaft that kicks, and the AD HD does that for me. Problem is, it sometimes tends to get high and spinny on me. Ventus Blue gets me into a slightly better window, but — and maybe I’m crazy here, but this is how it feels to me — it’s a little soft in the handle and the kickpoint is higher than I’d like, and that can cause some timing issues.

I’ve wondered if the AD UB might give me something similar to the AD HD, just tightening things up a bit. I’m a little concerned about what GD describes as a softer handle in the UB … which has me thinking it might be time to revisit something that’s more stiff-soft-stiff like the RDX Blue. Or the new Ventus TR seems really interesting as well.

Hey thanks! Just so happens that we both have a lot of experience with all those shafts. I really like the AD HD and the Ventus Blue. I’m still trying to figure out the AD UB. They call it Medium+, Medium+, Stiff, but I have found the AD UB to be pretty stout and just… heavy feeling. Hard to describe. My good swings are laserbombs, but I’m trying to figure out how to control it. To my eye, spin is probably the least of all of them with the UB, and the handle feels the stiffest. AD HD feels way softer in the hands IMO. Totally anecdotal, others may have wildly different experiences with it.

I’m going to spend more time with the AD UB this spring, but it’ll take a lot to get me to move away from my current faves, the AD TP or AD VR. I’ll also say that I’m pretty psyched for the updated Ventus TR too…

' src=

Hi Jon, greetings from the island of Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia. I have been gaming UB 5s for the past 1 year. Stock shot is high baby fade. Thinking of changing to a less stout shaft that could still generate a lower ball flight and more roll upon landing. Would DI 5s be something worth trying OR would the DI be something too similar to the UB?

Hard to say! That’s a fine tuning that is best left to a professional fitter. In my hands, the UB and the DI feel very different. They’re not too far off in profile, but the DI is way smoother, the UB more stout the whole way.

Review: Graphite Design Tour AD GP Shafts

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

Pros:  The stiffest of Graphite Design’s Tour AD shafts. Compared to similar shafts, the GP is impressively smooth and stable. Available in a wide range of weights (50-80 grams) and flexes (R2-X).

Cons:  Like other Tour AD shafts, the MSRP is $500.

Who it’s for:  Golfers who prefer tip-stiff shafts, as well as those looking to reduce launch and spin. The highly stable design can also suit golfers who want to tighten their dispersion, particularly if their miss is a hook.

GD_Logo

At the top levels of the game, golfers are getting stronger. It’s easy to see on the PGA Tour, where the game’s brightest young stars are regularly generating club head speeds in excess of 120 mph. It’s even more noticeable at top college and junior golf events, as fields are filled with golfers who are stronger and more technically sound than ever before.

In response, golf equipment manufacturers have evolved their product lines. Especially with metal woods, it has meant lower-spinning clubheads, and to complement them, stiffer, more energy-efficient shaft designs.

Tour_AD_Rings

Graphite Design new Tour AD GP shafts are intended to suit a wide range of golfers, as they’re offered in a variety of weights (50-80 grams) and flexes (R2-X) to fit a broad scope of golfers. Compared to previous shaft models from the company, however, the GP line (which stands for “Greatest Performance”) will optimize stronger golfers, as well as those who perform best with extremely stable shafts.

Like other new Tour AD models, they’re constructed with the company’s 50T carbon-fiber material, which gives them the smooth feel for which Graphite Design’s shafts are known. In the tip section of the shaft, however, the GP shafts use Torayca’s new T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NanoAlloy technology, which gives the shafts a tip stiffness that are only rivaled by the company’s Tour AD M9003 shafts.

Graphite_Design_Profiles

Graphite Design’s representatives warned me the GP shafts “may feel more on the firmer side,” and would not play like the Graphite Design shafts I used in the past. Design platforms and robot testing are one thing, but golf is played by humans — not engineering software and robots. I wanted to know exactly how different the new shaft would perform compared to Graphite Design’s most popular shaft of all time, the Tour AD-DI.

Tour_AD_1

To find out, I took the GP shaft to the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where I tested it against the Tour AD-DI in the most apples-to-apples comparison possible. Both shafts were built to my specifications, 7X (tipped 1 inch) at a finished length of 45.5 inches in a TaylorMade M1 430 (10.5 degrees set to 8.5 degrees).

The numbers below may look quite similar, but please read on, because the feedback and trajectory biases were not.

The Numbers

GraphiteDesignShafts

Tipped 1 inch, the GP was one of the stiffest shafts I have ever used, and felt considerably more stable than the Tour AD-DI that I’ve played in the past.

As you can see, I swung the GP slightly faster (0.8 mph), but the extremely stiff-tipped design caused me to release the clubhead sooner in a effort to hit a straight shot. You can see that in my Attack Angle, which increased from -1.4 degrees to 0.2 degrees. As a result of my manipulation, I also contacted my drives higher on the face with the GP, which lowered my ball speed, increased my launch angle and decreased my spin rate due to gear effect.

I talked to Graphite Design about my results, and company representatives weren’t surprised. According to their PGA Tour rep, the GP shafts are so stable that golfers are not tipping them in their drivers. Since the average tipping on Tour for a driver is 1 inch, that speaks to the GP’s robustness.

Tour_AD_GP_1

I also tried a GP 8X (tipped 1.5 inches) at 43 inches in my TaylorMade M1 fairway wood, and the shaft played entirely too stiff. My release was earlier, which caused my spin numbers to rise above appropriate levels, and my miss tended to be high and to the right. According to Graphite Design, golfers who are using GP shafts in their 3 wood are tipping them no more than 0.5 inches, and my results were typical of a shaft that was overtipped. The GP shafts have to be commended for their smooth feel, however, as well as their tight dispersion, despite my overtipping.

There’s no question that in the correct flex and tipping, the GP would have loaded and unloaded more efficiently than the AD-DI. That would have created all-around better launch conditions. Of course, results are going to vary from golfer to golfer depending on swing and style. That’s why the most important message from this review is to not try to emulate the specs of Tour player, but to be fit for the shaft that works best for your game.

Tour AD GP Flexes

Tour_AD_GP_Specs

If you’re a stronger golfer, or one who’s looking to tighten up your dispersion — especially if your miss is a hook — the GP is likely a good option for your game. And if you’re coming from another Graphite Design shaft, you’ll likely find the performance characteristics of the Tour AD GP to be noticeably, and impressively different.

According to the bend profile of this shaft any tip trimming done actually makes the shaft tip area play softer which speaks volumes to the stoutness of the shaft that with your speed Zak, and the amount you tipped the shafts that it still played to stiff.

The dispersion was very extremely tight, JJ. It’s the most stable shaft I’ve ever tested from GD.

A good review would have been completely stock vs stock, then perhaps throwing in numbers from your current tipped gamer. The only thing I can take away is don’t heavily tip a brand new shaft you’ve never tried before.

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

Jan 22, 2016 at 10:42 pm

the reason tour players aren’t tipping this shaft isn’t because its too stiff, its because the profile of this shaft makes it play softer when tipped due to an increasingly stiff tip section. When tipped you are removing a piece of the stiffest portion of the shaft. It’s been recommended by club builders to only tip this shaft when trying to make it play softer.

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

Feb 12, 2016 at 3:33 pm

That is total BS emb. Don’t listen to those guys okay. GD and many of the new shaftmakers who are copying the innovation of experienced materials experts, make a prolonged tip section so the shafts are more versatile and can be used in all woods. Understand, anytime you tip a tapered shaft (and they are all tapered, even fishing rods) it gets stiffer–PERIOD. Even if you tipped past the prolonged tip section and got into the taper where the walls get thinner, the hoop strength makes it get stiffer. Tipping shafts has never been an exact science so go at it incrementally–remember you can’t put any tip back. lol

emb is correct. try looking looking at the shaft bend profile before commenting

Insider photos from tiger woods’ launch event for his new “sun day red” apparel line.

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

On Monday evening, inside the swanky, second-story “Coach House” event center in the Palisades Village, just minutes down the road from the 2024 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, Tiger Woods and TaylorMade officially announced their new apparel/footwear/accessory line, called “Sun Day Red.”

The Sun Day Red website officially launched on Monday night during the event, and the products are set to go on sale starting May 1.

The “Sun Day Red,” or “SDR” name will be self-explanatory for most golf fans, since he’s been wearing a victory-red shirt on Sunday’s for his entire professional career, but Woods explained the meaning of Sun Day Red at the launch event:

“It started with mom. Mom thought – being a Capricorn – that my power color was red, so I wore red as a junior golfer and I won some tournaments. Lo and behold, I go to a university that is red; Stanford is red. We wore red on the final day of every single tournament, and then every single tournament I’ve played as a professional I’ve worn red. It’s just become synonymous with me.”

The Sunday Red outfit has worked to perfection for his 82 PGA Tour victories, including 15 majors, so why not make an entire apparel line based on the career-long superstition?

As I learned at Monday’s launch event, the new Sun Day Red line includes much more than just clothing. To go along with a slew of different golf shirt designs and colorways, there were also windbreakers, hoodies, shoes, hats, headcovers, ball markers and gloves on display.

The upscale event was hosted by sports media personality Erin Andrews, with special guests David Abeles (CEO of TaylorMade) and Tiger Woods himself.

As explained by Abeles, the Sun Day Red brand is an independently-run business under the TaylorMade umbrella, and is based in San Clemente, California (rather than Carlsbad, where TaylorMade headquarters is located), and it’s run by a newly-formed, independent group. Brad Blackinship, formerly of Quiksilver and RVCA, is the appointed president of the new brand.

As for the logo itself, obviously, it’s made to look like a Tiger (the animal), and is comprised of 15 tiger stripes, which correspond with Woods’ 15 major championships. While the logo may need a 16th stripe if Woods adds a major trophy to his collection, it makes perfect sense for the time being.

The golf/lifestyle line is meant to combine premium precision and athletic comfort, while still having plenty of wearability and style off the course. Like Woods said on stage at the event, he wants to be able to go right from the course to dinner wearing Sun Day Red, and that was exactly the aesthetic on display at the event on Monday.

Following the official announcement from Woods and Abeles, they revealed multiple pieces of clothing, accessories and footwear for the event-goers to ogle (and photograph). Check out a selection of product/event photos below, or head over to our @GolfWRX Instagram page for video coverage…OR, head into our GolfWRX Forums for even more photos and member discussion.

Titleist launches new Vokey WedgeWorks 60 “A” grind wedge

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

The menu of grind options just got more expansive for Titleist Vokey WedgeWorks consumers, with the addition of a “60A” wedge to the lineup.

Previously, Vokey offered seven main grind options for players with various needs :

  • T Grind: The narrowest sole option, which is widely used by PGA Tour players, and has low bounce
  • L Grind: The lowest bounce option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for maximum versatility
  • F Grind: An all-purpose grind that’s best for full wedge shots played with a square face
  • S Grind: A neutral grind, best for full shots played with a square face
  • M Grind: A versatile grind that’s for players who want to open and close the face for various shots
  • D Grind: A higher-bounce wedge that’s for players with a steep swing angle, but want to play shots from various club orientations
  • K Grind: The highest-bounce wedge option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for versatility

Titleist has now added the “A” grind, which has actually already been played on the PGA Tour by golfers such as Tom Kim, who used an A-grind to win three times on the PGA Tour, Wyndham Clark, who won the U.S. Open using an A-grind, and Max Homa, who used an A-grind at the 2023 Open Championship.

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

According to Titleist, the Vokey WedgeWorks 60A wedge is a low-bounce option that’s for golfers with a shallow angle of attack, and who play in firmer conditions. It has a “smoothed-out” sole for a faster feel through the turf, helping some golfers slide under the ball easier at impact.

“The most important club for me, probably in my bag, is this A grind,” Clark said, according to a Titleist press release. “I use the SM9 60-degree A grind, which is a low bounce 60 that is very versatile. I’m able to – on tight lies, rough, wet lies, firm lies, whatever it is – hit the shot I want, and with the amount of spin I want, trajectory and everything.”

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

Apparently, Geoff Ogilvy played a large part in the A-grind coming to life.

“I spoke with Geoff (Ogilvy), and we got on the topic of Australian golf courses and how they compared to courses in America, and around the world,” said Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill, in a press release. “I asked him some specific questions, which resulted in an idea to design another lob wedge grind option that complemented the firm links-style conditions that players face – not just in Australia and Europe – but globally. Geoff has always been a low bounce player in his 60-degree, so I took his 60.04L wedge and removed the ribbon, resulting in a grind that moves through the turf quickly with very little resistance.”

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

The new Vokey A-grind will be available on Nov. 7, selling for $225 each. Custom options include up to six toe engravings, 10-15 character stamping options, the Flight Line alignment feature option, and custom shafts/grips/ferrules are available.

GolfWRXers put the Full Swing KIT’s accuracy to the test

graphite design tour ad bb 6x

Last month, four GolfWRX forum members traveled to The Grand Golf Club at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California, to test the Full Swing KIT launch monitor and to see how it stacks up against other launch monitors. If you’re not familiar with the Full Swing KIT , development began when Tiger Woods requested a launch monitor he could trust on the range as much as he trusted his Full Swing simulator in his own home. Later, the KIT earned Tiger’s seal of approval and has been seen with him at every tournament he’s played in since its release.

GolfWRX members on the KIT’s accuracy

zap311: “The Full Swing team seems obsessed with accuracy when it comes to the KIT – The team talked about how this product officially shipped about 18 months ago and they are already on firmware release #20. They said they are regularly releasing updates (overnight via WiFi) to continuously improve accuracy and performance. That is pretty awesome and it’s nice to hear that they are not a company that “ships it” and moves to the next thing. I think they are on the right track since I saw virtually no differences in the data when testing vs. GCQuad and Trackman today.”

double or triple?: “In some cases the difference was less than half a degree on launch and less than 50 rpms on spin.”

hatrick11: “The differences were statistically nonexistent. I think it’s hard to believe for a lot of people when you think about the huge price disparity, but I can’t state enough how close the Full Swing was to trackman every single time, for each of us.”

“Outside, the data is just really really accurate. I know my numbers and know this particular range very well and the KIT was spot on all day. I also had some very variable quality golf balls in the bucket I hit and there was really only one spin rate in the whole session that had me raising my eyebrows at all.”

SwingBlues: “The GolfWRX Full Swing/WRX Experience showed Full Swing KIT produce numbers the same as the GC Quad (GC4) and the Trackman4. Dollar wise, both LMs are easily north of KIT, so this is HUGE to stand up there with the bigger boys on the Podium. For me, it seems more “apples to apples” to compare KIT to GC3. My own testing validates what we saw at the Experience. It shows critical data points like spin, carry, ball speeds are dead on or almost dead on for 40 yards and up on both GC3 and KIT.”

More on the Full Swing KIT

zap311: “The versatility of viewing data is impressive – Depending on usage, everyone has different preferences for viewing data. You have on-device, phone, tablet, monitor, smartwatch, or audio/headphones. I’m pleased to say that Full Swing covers all of these. You can use the app on iOS devices (they said Android is planned for the future). This includes viewing your last shot on the Apple Watch with a few options and turning on audio playback of your preferred metrics following each shot. I’ll post screenshots of this later. You can also choose between 4 data points or 1 data point on the device itself. It was easy to use the app to customize the top 4. For example, I was able to quickly change from launch angle on irons to swing path on driver.

“The KIT was very easy to use – Once you spend a few minutes learning the app and settings, it is very simple to select a club, line up the target line, and fire away. You don’t have to use a level or a laser to line up. KIT uses the built-in camera to tell you where to line up within the app or on-device screen. I was also able to boot up the KIT in less than a minute and drop it down on the tee box for our on-course trial today. Because of this simplicity, I can see it being more practical to bring to the course…

“The Full Swing team really thought through usability for the KIT. You can see up to four data points on the device’s OLED screen. You can see all 16 data points on your iPhone/iPad along with a video replay of the shot, you can view one primary metric from your Apple Watch, and you can enable audio playback for any of the 16 data points. For me, this was a dream as a full iOS user. One other feature I like is that you can star a particular shot to save it. You can also send shot data + the video recording to your coach if you want.”

double or triple?: “I was able to meet the teaching pro at the range I’m using for testing – PGA teacher/member Ryan Kolk. He and his team have 4 units amongst themselves and use them both personally and with their students during lessons. Ryan spent time dialing in his knowledge of the range balls vs proV1x (gamer) to better understand the FSK and he believes the consistency is there with the FSK and within trackman and GC/Foresight models. His preference is to use FSK while testing shafts and new product before using them in his personal playing bag which as a GolfWRX member is 100% appreciated. For his better students, he believes the information like Face to Path and Club Path that FullSwing Kit offers is great to help them understand what their swing is doing and use that information to better themselves.”

hatrick11: “It’s nice to know I can get super useful practice sessions in at my house, and can do in in ~20 min stints; with two little kids at home I can’t just go out for frequent or lengthy range sessions, so this is super valuable and I think will help me keep my game from degrading and allow me to spend my limited free time enjoying the occasional round with friends. In particular with the KIT, as opposed to the cheaper monitors or the other “mid tiers” like GC3, seeing path and face-to-path data is the key item that makes my practice sessions useful…when I am grooving it my path is almost always between 0-2* out to in, with face control being the main thing I need to work on. When my game goes sideways I start coming more in to out, and combined with face consistency being an ongoing issue, that brings the bad left miss into play. Previously I have struggled getting real use out of net practice, because the feels don’t always match reality. This data and video evidence really helps keep me honest, so it was great to see that I was eventually able to get that piece dialed in with KIT.”

SwingBlues: “One feature I am really starting to like is how easy to see the video of each shot. My buddy was not hitting it well, we went to the video and we could see the takeway was too far to the outside.”

“Using the app, it will display all 16 data points. Below is an example of one of my iron shots. Pretty impressive data captured by KIT. On KIT itself, the launch monitor display can be configured to show a single data point, or it can show a grid of 4 data points where the golfer choose which ones to display!”

Graphite Design Tour AD XC Shaft Review

More in reviews:.

Ben Hogan PTx Tour Irons

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Design Tour AD XC shaft has a stout tip section for stability but pairs that with a more active butt section.  Low spin.  Very consistent.

Introduction

The latest offering in Graphite Design’s Tour AD line is the XC.  As usual, those letters have meaning behind them: “Xtra Carry.”  While the name might lead you to think that this is a softer, higher launching shaft, it’s actually quite the opposite.  The Tour AD XC has a stiff tip section which claims to deliver low/mid launch and low spin.  I tested one to see if it delivered.

The Graphite Design Tour AD XC has a more traditional color scheme than some of their recent offerings, and the graphics remain true to the Tour AD line.  The majority of the shaft is matte black with a shift to silver near the tip.  White and red branding pops off the black background just below the grip.

Despite my efforts to test the Tour AD XC without preconceived ideas, I picked up through social media that this is a low spinning shaft.  With this knowledge, I was expecting a stout shaft with minimal kick.  The tip section delivered on those expectations – it’s very stable .  However, the butt section of the Tour AD XC has a very strong kick.

Once I got a sense of the Tour AD XC, I absolutely loved the feel .  The shaft doesn’t want to torque or twist, but just below the grip it explodes through the ball.  The best part is that the kick is there whether you swing smooth or go 110%.

Performance

Per Graphite Design, the Tour AD XC has the softest butt section of any of the Tour AD shafts, equaled only by the Tour AD BB.  This is paired with mid and tip sections that get GD’s second stiffest designation.  The final result is a shaft with explosive feel that also delivers controlled launch and low spin .

Throughout my launch monitor testing, I saw drives launching in the mid to lower end of my normal trajectory window.  That was paired with low spin to produce very strong ball flight , good carry distances, and plenty of run out.  In the windy Chicago fall, the strong ball flight proved to be critical for keeping the ball in play with consistent distance.

While accuracy is largely dependent on a given player’s timing with the shaft, I found the Tour AD XC to be very straight .  Because the kick was present whether I swung hard or soft, there was no issue of trying to time the shaft.  The Tour AD XC gave me a tight dispersion and did a good job keeping mishits online.

The Graphite Design Tour AD XC is available in weights ranging from 40 grams to 80 grams .  In the 40 gram weight class, stiff, R1 (regular), and R2 (light) flexes are available.  At 50 grams, you can get R2, R1, stiff, and X.  The 60 gram family offers stiff and X while introducing TX and SR (Stiff/Regular).  The 70 and 80 gram models are for the faster swingers, with only stiff, X, and TX, or stiff and X available, respectively.

There’s no shortage of low spinning shafts on the market, but nothing that I’ve tested feels like the Graphite Design Tour AD XC.  If you want low spin with a big, pronounced kick, head to your Graphite Design fitter to give this a test.

Does it dethrone the Ventus Black?

' src=

Not at the moment. The Ventus Black has been nothing but solid since it went in the bag, no reason to change.

' src=

Sounds similar to EF White T1100. How would you compare the two?

That’s a good comparison. The way they kick feels different to me – the XC is more controlled – but they are quite similar conceptually.

' src=

Hi Matt, Great review. Did you test at all with the 6X? Or any reason you went with the 7x? Thanks!

I tested the 7X, not the 6X. I’ve been experimenting with 70 gram shafts vs 60 grams. Always tinkering.

' src=

Hi Matt, I have similar swing speed as you (104-108mph). Currently I use 60+ grams stiff driver shaft, Tour AD IZ 6s to be exact. X stiff shaft feels a bit too stiff to me. I am wondering what factors determined that you play 6x rather than 6s Venus shaft ? What are the benefits you see by playing X shaft? Thanks.

I prefer the feel of the X, and I get better dispersion from a stiffer shaft (that’s not universally true, but it’s true for me). Also, any time I go to a softer shaft, I see draws instead of fades, and my preference is to fade the driver.

And, I do have access to a Trackman 4 launch monitor and a few driver shafts (iz 6s, iz 6x, ventus 6s, and ventus 6x). What are the data that I should look at to decide which shaft to put in the bag? Thanks.

' src=

How do you like this shaft compared to Diamana DF?

Both are very good. I could be quite happy gaming either one.

' src=

Have you tested any of the OBAN Kiyoshi shafts? I was fit for the Kiyoshi white but didn’t get to hit the graphite design XC as it wasn’t available. Wondering how this compares to the Kiyoshi White 65 X

You can find our Oban reviews here: https://pluggedingolf.com/?s=oban

' src=

Can you compare with Tensei Pro Orange?

The feel is much more active than the Tensei Pro Orange.

' src=

How close does this compare to Evenflow black 6.0 A 75g, I haven’t had a bit with the GD AD XC yet.

I have a full review of the EvenFlow Black here: https://pluggedingolf.com/project-x-evenflow-riptide-riptide-cb-shaft-review/

' src=

Hi, in your opiniom XC-6 or VR-6 ?

For my swing? Probably the XC.

' src=

Hey Matt, I was fit for this shaft earlier this year in a 7x with the Maverick Sub Zero and LOVE the shaft, but curious what your thought is on going to the 6x for more speed (obviously keeping the same swing weight)? Also, then would it be better to go with the 6TX version of this shaft for more stability? Just having some thoughts while sitting around doing nothing. Also, thanks for all the content you guys put out!!! -Joe

I’m very familiar with this rabbit hole. The best advice I can give you is to step carefully over it rather than going down it. :)

Shaft weight changes rarely work out the way they’re “supposed to”. Going lighter “should” make you faster, but you may lose your feel for the club entirely. Also, when you think about how much weight your actually removing (10 grams or so), the potential gain is extremely small.

Stay strong. Check out our list of Top 10 Golf Books instead of fiddling with well-fit gear: https://pluggedingolf.com/pig-top-10-golf-books/

' src=

Hey Matt – been gaming the AD BB (6x) for years now. Would you say worth it to upgrade to the XC? Any added performance as a result of the modernized materials/offering?

Thanks, Brett

The XC has a slightly different profile than the BB, so it’s not pure apples to apples. I think the BB is still a great shaft, so I don’t think you’re going to see much benefit from the change unless the XC profile is a better fit.

' src=

Hi Matt, how do you think this compares to the diamana d plus limited edition shafts? Thank you for your insight.

I haven’t tested the D+ Limited Edition, so I can’t offer a comparison.

' src=

Hi Matt, been gaming the AD TP6 stiff in my PXG Proto 0811 X but curious how the XC in a TSi3 or staying with my PXG in the XC would be in comparison. I have a launch angle that fluctuates between the mid to upper teens causing higher than desired ball flight. I would like to bring that down a bit. How would you compare the feel and ball flight from TP to XC? Would this be a drastic change?

I have a full review of the AD TP here: https://pluggedingolf.com/graphite-designs-tour-ad-tp-shaft-review/

' src=

Hi Matt, what shaft do you think is similar for a consideration if you really like the tour ad xc.

If you really like the AD XC, why are you looking for another shaft? That’s not meant to be sarcastic, I’m just trying to understand your question.

' src=

Looks like the same profile as Fubuki K series.

Currently, I’m gaming Fubuki K series 7x in 3w and 5w. If I switch to this, should I go for TX or remains X?

If you’re going to invest in a new shaft of this caliber, I would recommend having it fit to find the right flex.

' src=

I recently cracked the EF White T1100 6.5X 65g (which I loved) in my Titleist TS4, and looking for a replacement. Would you say the XC 7X is a worthy competitor?

My driver SS averages at around 108mph and I battle with very high spin and launch in my driver.

My other alternative at the moment (and I don’t have many in my area) is an orignal handrcrafted Hzrdus Black 6.0 62g, and then tipping it an inch. Could this be a better option for lower launch/spin?

Thanks! Chris

My advice is always to get fit. Failing that, the HZRDUS Black is a fine choice for most players looking to drop launch angle and spin.

' src=

In Saskatchewan there’s not a lot/none of options to get fitted for Graphite design shafts. Got fitted for Tensei White AV Raw shaft 75g X-Flex in my TSI3 driver. Would you have any thoughts on similarity on these shafts?

I don’t think these two are that similar.

' src=

Hy Matt currently using tensei white 70g 1k how does the xc compare?

This is my review of the TENSEI 1K, so you can see how our thoughts on that compare: https://pluggedingolf.com/mitsubishi-tensei-pro-white-1k-shaft-review/

' src=

I have the RDX Black 6.0/70gr and swing around that 103-105 range. Would like to know if you think the XC is more consistent? I have Stealth 10.5 head. Thanks

Some will find the XC more consistent, others will find the RDX Black more consistent. It’s all about fit.

' src=

Hey Matt, currently game Tensei AV Raw Orange 6S. My miss is a slice/fade and I have been skying my drive with too much spin. Do you have any recommendations for shafts to help reduce this from graphite design or any shaft manufacture

My best advice is to get a fitting. Buy to try is an expensive game.

' src=

I would like to pair XC 6S with Callaway Max LS 9 degree. My SS is 98-102mph. What would be the ideal SW D1, D2, and D3 be to optimize carry distance?

First, there’s no way for me to know. My advice would be to get a fitting. Second, I don’t think 1-2 SW points will change your numbers in a huge way.

' src=

Playing this in my driver and going very well. What would be the chance it worked in my 3 and 5 woods in that bays it is it very different in the fairway woods?

There are certainly plenty of people who play the same shaft throughout their woods. Others don’t. My advice is always to get fit before buying.

' src=

I’m 84 just got fitted with Tour AD 40 R1 for my Paradym X 10* I’ve yet to use it on the course was ceurus what you think of the setup? Chief

If it’s what you were fit for and it’s working well, I think it’s great!

' src=

I am currently playing a kuro kage 50gr stiff in a Tsi2 driver and am thinking of going to Tour AD XC 6 Stiff. What differences will i notice iyo? I swing 90-95mph. Your thoughts please.

My thoughts are that you should get fit. There is no way for anyone on the internet to credibly tell you how switching to a heavier shaft with a different bend profile will affect what you feel or the bal flight.

' src=

Matt, great review. I was fitted for this AD XC 6X cut to 45” at Club Champion. Felt this was the best shaft for the Stealth 2 Plus driver (9.0) given the numbers and feel with the swing. Tight dispersion, 2300 rpm, and feels great with my tempo. Continue the great work here on PIG!

Thank you! I hope you see the great results on the course.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
