Why is Iran attacking Israel?

Israel’s armed forces announced late Saturday that Iran launched attacks from within its territory toward Israel. Israel shut down its airspace to both domestic and international flights.

U.S. forces have downed some Iran-launched attack drones flying toward Israel, according to a U.S. defense official and two U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the matter, Bloomberg News reported. The defense official said the effort to intercept the attack was continuing.

On April 1, an Israeli airstrike demolished Iran’s consulate in Syria, killing Gen. Ali Reza Zahdi, who led the elite Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016, according to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. It also killed Zahdi’s deputy, Gen Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi, and five other officers.

How does the war with Hamas figure in?

Israel and Iran have been on a collision course throughout Israel’s six-month war against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets in government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years but has escalated those strikes since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Soon after the war erupted, Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group in Lebanon, began attacking Israel’s northern border. The two sides exchange fire daily, while Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen have launched rockets and missiles toward Israel.

What happened this weekend?

Israel’s military said over 100 drones had been fired at Israel. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency quoted an anonymous official saying ballistic missiles were part of the attack, but Israel didn’t mention that in its report on the attack.

Most of the more than 200 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones fired by Iran were intercepted with the help of Israel’s allies before landing, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said early Sunday, Bloomberg News reported.

He said the only impacts were a 10-year-old girl who was badly injured and minor damage to an army base. Hagari earlier called the attack from Iran “a severe and dangerous escalation.”

Why is this attack so significant?

The attack marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations said the action was a “legitimate” defensive response to the strike in Damascus — which Israel hasn’t acknowledged carrying out — and suggested it was a warning.

“The matter can be deemed concluded,” the Iranian mission said in a social media post. “However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe.”

It also warned the U.S. to stay away from the conflict.

How is the U.S. responding?

President Joe Biden cut short a weekend trip to his beach house in Delaware and returned to the White House on Saturday to meet with the National Security Council to discuss the unfolding attack, the White House said.

“The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the head of the U.S. military’s Central Command, was already in Israel consulting with defense officials there about the Iranian threat. The Central Command oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East.

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was among the first leaders to respond to the attack.

“The UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security and that of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq,” he said in a statement. " Alongside our allies, we are urgently working to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation. No one wants to see more bloodshed.”

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported heavy Israeli airstrikes and shelling on multiple locations in south Lebanon following Iran’s launch of drones. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said it launched “dozens” of Katyusha rockets at an Israeli military site in the Golan Heights early Sunday. It was not immediately clear if there was any damage.

Countries in the region began to close their airspace.

L'armée israélienne a prévenu ce mardi que l'Iran ne sortirait «pas indemne» de l'attaque sans précédent qu'il a lancée samedi soir contre Israël en riposte à une frappe sur son consulat à Damas. «Nous ne pouvons pas rester les bras croisés face à une telle agression, l'Iran ne sortira pas indemne» de son attaque, a déclaré le porte-parole de l'armée Daniel Hagari, lors d'une visite organisée pour les médias sur une base dans le sud d'Israël. «Tirer 110 missiles directement sur Israël ne restera pas impuni. Nous répondrons au moment, au lieu et à la manière que nous choisirons» , a-t-il ajouté.

L'armée israélienne a montré à un groupe de journalistes un des missiles intercepté lors de l'attaque et récupéré dans la mer Morte, précisant que ce type d'engins peut porter une charge explosive de 500 kilos. «Leur rôle, leur seule intention était de tuer et de détruire des vies israéliennes et Israël» , a déclaré un autre porte-parole de l'armée, Peter Lerner. «S'ils n'avaient pas été interceptés, l'ampleur (des dégâts) aurait été immense» , a ajouté ce porte-parole. «Nous parlions seulement de la menace nucléaire de l'Iran. Alors qu'au même moment, l'Iran constituait une menace conventionnelle, afin de créer un cercle de feu autour d'Israël» , a ajouté Daniel Hagari.

L'Union européenne envisage d'élargir le champ de ses sanctions déjà en place contre l'Iran après l'attaque lancée contre Israël le week-end dernier, a déclaré mardi le chef de la diplomatie de l'UE Josep Borrell . «L'idée est d'élargir le régime (de sanctions) existant contre les drones iraniens» , a déclaré M. Borrell, à l'issue d'une réunion extraordinaire, en visioconférence, des ministres des Affaires étrangères de l'UE.

De son côté, le premier ministre britannique Rishi Sunak a appelé mardi son homologue israélien Benyamin Netanyahou à faire preuve de «sang-froid» après l'attaque de l'Iran contre Israël durant le week-end, soulignant qu'une escalade n'était «dans l'intérêt de personne» , selon Downing Street. Lors d'un appel mardi après-midi, Rishi Sunak a souligné qu'une «escalade significative n'était dans l'intérêt de personne et ne ferait qu'aggraver l'insécurité au Moyen-Orient» , «c'est le moment de faire preuve de sang-froid»

Plus tôt, le président iranien Ebrahim Raïssi a prévenu que «la moindre action» d'Israël contre «les intérêts de l'Iran» provoquerait «une réponse sévère» de son pays, selon un communiqué publié par la présidence. «Maintenant, nous déclarons fermement que la moindre action contre les intérêts de l'Iran entraînera certainement une réponse sévère, étendue et douloureuse contre tous ses auteurs» , a déclaré le président Raïssi au cours d'un entretien téléphonique avec l' émir du Qatar Tamim ben Hamad Al-Thani tard lundi.

Le président iranien a indiqué que son pays avait visé ce week-end, «en exerçant son droit à l'autodéfense» , les «centres» où avait été organisé le bombardement, imputé à Israël, d'une annexe de l'ambassade d'Iran à Damas , en Syrie, le 1er avril. Cette opération inédite «a été menée à bien avec succès avec l'objectif de punir l'agresseur» , a-t-il ajouté. Ebrahim Raïssi a par ailleurs de nouveau dénoncé «le soutien aveugle de certains pays occidentaux au régime sioniste» , qui est «une cause de tension dans la région» , selon le communiqué.

Le ministre des Affaires étrangères israélien a déclaré mardi lancer «une offensive diplomatique contre l'Iran» , après l'attaque sans précédent de la République islamique et avant une riposte d'Israël à laquelle de nombreuses chancelleries étrangères sont opposées. «Parallèlement à la réponse militaire aux tirs de missiles et de drones, je mène une offensive diplomatique contre l'Iran» , a écrit Israël Katz sur X.

Ce proche du premier ministre Benjamin Netanyahou, considéré comme un des faucons de son gouvernement ultra-conservateur, souhaite imposer des sanctions contre Téhéran, et faire reconnaître le corps des Gardiens de la Révolution islamique comme organisation terroriste, «afin de freiner et d'affaiblir l'Iran» . À cet effet, Israël Katz a dit avoir envoyé une lettre «à 32 pays» et s'être entretenu avec «des dizaines de ministres des Affaires étrangères et de personnalités du monde entier» .

Il n'a pas précisé les pays auxquels il a demandé d'imposer des sanctions contre cette organisation paramilitaire de la République islamique, qui est par ailleurs d'ores et déjà listée comme organisation terroriste par les États-Unis et fait l'objet de sanctions de la part de l'Union européenne. «Il faut arrêter l'Iran maintenant, avant qu'il ne soit trop tard» , conclut-il trois jours après l'attaque massive lancée par l'Iran sur Israël.

Depuis dimanche, les appels se multiplient pour empêcher une riposte massive qui risquerait d'embraser davantage la région, déjà «au bord du précipice» , selon le secrétaire général de l'ONU, Antonio Guterres. Après avoir fait front avec leurs alliés contre l'attaque iranienne, les États-Unis ont dit ne pas vouloir «d'une guerre étendue avec l'Iran» , et prévenu qu'ils ne participeraient pas à une opération de représailles. «Ensemble, avec nos partenaires, nous avons vaincu cette attaque» iranienne, a affirmé le président américain Joe Biden en appelant Israël à éviter une escalade et plutôt tenter d'œuvrer à un «cessez-le-feu» dans la bande de Gaza.

Outre les États-Unis , le Royaume-Uni et la France ont eux aussi pris leurs distances. Le chef de la diplomatie britannique, David Cameron, a exclu une participation de son pays à une riposte et le président français Emmanuel Macron a appelé à éviter un «embrasement» régional.

Si on applique la doctrine française. Et que l'on avait été dans la même situation... Ne sachant pas ce qu'il y a dans les missiles balistiques On aurait tiré nos missiles balistiques nucléaires au même moment et rasé leur principale ville. C'est une réalité. Israël ne l'a pas fait mais aurait pu le faire. Biden a sauvé l'Iran de la destruction le week-end dernier. L Iran a produit environ 10-30 tetes nucleaires. Qui auraient pu savoir si ces Missiles tirés n avaient pas des tetes nucleaires dans leur coiffe ?

Israel mulls response after U.S.-led alliance fends off Iranian barrage

TEL AVIV — For several hours on Saturday night, as Iranian missiles streaked through the skies, millions of people in Israel and across a restless region held their breath.

On Sunday morning, Israelis awoke to find their country relatively unscathed, fortified by widespread global support after months of international isolation. The nightmare scenario leaders here had long warned about — a direct attack from Iran — provided a public showcase of the regional coalition and high-tech systems built to repel such an assault.

The five-hour barrage, in retaliation for a deadly Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic facility in Damascus, Syria, was massive, involving hundreds of attack drones and guided missiles, and supporting fire from at least some of Iran’s regional proxies. But it also came with some warning and appeared calibrated to head off a wider war. Israel leveraged its sophisticated air defense technology and its network of anti-Iran allies, giving its forces operational freedom across large swaths of Middle Eastern airspace. In the end, most interceptions occurred outside of Israeli territory, the military said.

Even Jordan, one of the fiercest public critics of Israel’s war in Gaza , closed its airspace and “helped in the process of the interceptions,” allowing Israel and its allies to shoot down 99 percent of the Iranian munitions, said Yoel Guzansky, a former official on Israel’s National Security Council and now a senior fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies.

“Never in the history of warfare was such an operation conducted, with so much international coordination, all answering to [U.S. Central Command], and missiles coming from so many places at once, not just Iran” — but also rockets by Hezbollah, in Lebanon, and unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles fired from Yemen and Iraq, Guzansky said.

The U.S.-led regional partnership “proved itself in real time,” Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military spokesman, told reporters Sunday morning. “It showed it can face Iran.”

In a statement late Saturday, President Biden highlighted the movement of U.S. aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the past week, which “helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles.” On Sunday, the president spoke with members of two Air Force fighter squadrons involved in the response, praising them for “defending Israel from an unprecedented aerial attack.”

Even before the missiles landed, Iranian leaders announced that, in their mind, the score had been settled. “The matter can be deemed concluded,” the country’s mission to the United Nations posted late Saturday, but added a caveat: Should Israel “make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe.” On Sunday, Israel said the situation was “ongoing”: The question was how — and where — it would respond.

Benny Gantz, a member of the Israeli war cabinet, which was due to meet Sunday afternoon, said in a video statement that Israel would “exact a price from Iran in a manner and at a time that is right.”

The Israeli army said hits from several ballistic missiles had caused minor damage to the military’s Nevatim air base, in southern Israel. On Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces released footage of an F-35 returning to the base. One young girl from a Bedouin town in the south was hospitalized for severe shrapnel injuries, her family said.

But Israel and its allies viewed the event as a “win,” said Michael Horowitz, head of intelligence at the risk consultancy group Le Beck International, adding that the country managed to restore some international legitimacy while avoiding any serious damage on the ground.

“The result matters … but so does the intent, and the intent was very clear: not a symbolic attack designed to fail, but a sustained assault designed to actually hit its targets inside Israel,” Horowitz said.

Under the leadership of the United States, Hagari said, the Israeli military has ramped up collaboration with Britain and France over the past six months, as well as other regional states whose names he said he was not at liberty to reveal — probably a reference to Jordan and other Arab nations that have quietly strengthened security ties with Israel, even as they try to contain mounting public fury in their countries over the war in Gaza.

The Iranian attack consisted of 170 drones, 120 ballistic missiles and 30 cruise missiles, carrying a combined 60 tons of explosive material, according to the IDF. Israel countered with the Arrow, an anti-ballistic missile system developed by the United States and Israel; and David’s Sling, a medium- to long-range air defense system put in place to ward off missiles from Iran and Syria, according to Jonathan Conricus, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and a former IDF spokesman.

The success of Israel’s air defenses gives the government time to formulate a “smart and long-term strategy” rather than reacting under “anger and duress,” Conricus said.

“We intercepted. We thwarted. Together we will win,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted on X on Sunday morning, a statement that stood out to analysts both for its brevity and its measured tone.

“The prime minister actually gave a very succinct statement, and he doesn’t usually do that,” said Miri Eisin, a former senior intelligence officer in the Israeli military. “He didn’t say, ‘Now we are going to destroy Iran.’”

But there remains uncertainty over whether Netanyahu can withstand pressure from his more extreme coalition partners to escalate against Tehran. “To create deterrence in the Middle East,” Israel “needs to go crazy,” far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said in a video posted on X on Sunday.

“You have Israel again in the favor of other nations. Diplomatically, that could work well for Netanyahu if he is able to leverage it,” said an Israeli familiar with discussions close to the prime minister, speaking on the condition of anonymity to share private deliberations. “On the other hand, within his cabinet, though, if he doesn’t go after Iran, he will be in trouble with some.”

The United States and other allies that played a role in the defensive operation are pushing for restraint, the person said: “He has the Americans and everyone else saying, ‘It happened, no damage was done, we were there for you. Now it’s your turn to be there for us.’”

Middle East conflict

“We don’t want to see this escalate,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, a point he emphasized on a whirlwind tour of six political talk shows. “We’re not looking for a wider war with Iran.”

U.S. officials are sending similar messages in private, urging Israel to limit its retaliation and cool regional tensions, a senior administration official said Sunday, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive closed-door discussions.

In a matter of hours, analysts said Israel appeared to largely regain its standing in the world community, a position that has been badly eroded by the civilian death toll from its war against Hamas in Gaza and its restrictions on aid delivery, which has put the north of the enclave on the verge of famine .

Noam Tibon, a retired Israeli military general, said the Iranian attack allowed Israel to reset on two fronts: in Gaza, where it has been under growing domestic and international pressure to agree to a cease-fire and a deal to free the hostages still held by Hamas; and on its northern border with Lebanon, where Israel has traded near-daily fire with Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group and political party, and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes.

“This was the first time in this war that Israel has had a clear victory,” Tibon said. “The West is helping, is standing beside us, and if Israel is not careful, it will reverse all of that just like it did in Gaza.”

Leaders of the Group of Seven countries put out a statement Sunday after an emergency meeting convened by Biden, condemning Iran’s “direct and unprecedented attack against Israel” and warning of an “uncontrollable regional escalation.”

“This must be avoided,” the statement said.

“There has to be a price for what the Iranians did,” said Yossi Kuperwasser, former head of research in Israeli military intelligence. “Timing is of the essence here.”

But he added: “It’s very important that we coordinate with the Americans and retaliation is approved and supported by the United States.”

The attack Saturday had some parallels to a smaller Iranian assault on the Ain al-Asad air base in Iraq in January 2020, after influential Iranian general Qasem Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad.

In that case, Iran responded with a salvo of 16 ballistic missiles, 10 of which hit the base. About half of the U.S. troops there had been evacuated in advance, but 110 still suffered traumatic brain injuries, some of which caused months of health complications .

Then-President Donald Trump declined to respond militarily, saying in the aftermath that “Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world.”

Following the latest attack by Tehran, the U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting late Sunday.

“It’s very clear that Iran has violated every norm,” said Eyal Hulata, who served as the head of Israel’s National Security Council until last year. “It’s either the international community acts or Israel will need to make its own decisions.”

U.N. restrictions on Iran’s missile program expired in October as part of the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. The Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the pact also means key guardrails have fallen away, leaving Iran closer to nuclear weapons capability than at any time in the country’s history — which Israel sees as an existential threat.

Eisin said Israel’s overnight military performance had a redeeming quality after the intelligence and security failures on Oct. 7, when the army did not predict the Hamas-led assault and was slow to respond to the carnage unfolding across southern Israel.

In Saturday’s attack, “barely anything hit the ground at all, and that’s a success that gives a boost to our sense of security,” she said. “We need that, because this isn’t over yet.”

Iran’s Strikes on Israel Open a Dangerous New Chapter for Old Rivals

Experts say Tehran does not want a broader war. But it is far from clear whether Iran or Israel will choose to escalate a conflict that has become more direct and out of the shadows.

Iran has retaliated directly against Israel for the killings of its senior generals in Damascus, Syria, with an onslaught of more than 300 drones and missiles aimed at restoring its credibility and deterrence, officials and analysts say.

That represents a moment of great risk, with key questions still to answer, they say. Has Iran’s attack been enough to satisfy its calls for revenge? Or given the relatively paltry results — almost all of the drones and missiles were intercepted by Israel and the United States — will it feel obligated to strike again? And will Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, see the strong performance by his country’s air defenses as a sufficient response? Or will he choose to escalate further with an attack on Iran itself?

Now that Iran has attacked Israel as it promised to do, it will want to avoid a broader war, the officials and analysts say, noting that the Iranians targeted only military sites in an apparent effort to avoid civilian casualties and advertised their attack well in advance.

“Iran’s government appears to have concluded that the Damascus strike was a strategic inflection point, where failure to retaliate would carry more downsides than benefits,” said Ali Vaez, the Iran director of the International Crisis Group. “But in doing so, the shadow war it has been waging with Israel for years now threatens to turn into a very real and very damaging conflict,” one that could drag in the United States, he said.

“The Iranians have for now played their card,” said Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at Chatham House. “They made a choice to call Israel’s bluff, and they felt they needed to do so, because they see the last six months as a persistent effort to set them back across the region.”

On Sunday, Iranian leaders said the military operation against Israel was over, but warned that they could launch a bigger one depending on Israel’s response.

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s top military officer, said the “operation yielded its complete result” and “there is no intention to continue it.” But, he added, if Israel attacked Iran on its own soil, or elsewhere, “our next operation will be much bigger than this.”

For years, Iran took blow after blow from Israel : assassinations of its nuclear scientists and military commanders, explosions at its nuclear and military bases, cyberattacks, intelligence infiltrations, an embarrassing theft of nuclear documents and recent attacks on its critical infrastructure.

But since the Hamas-led assault of Oct. 7 prompted Israel to go to war in Gaza, Israel has intensified its attacks on Iranian interests and commanders in Syria. In a series of strikes from December onward, Israel has assassinated at least 18 Iranian commanders and military personnel from the Quds Force, the elite unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps that operates outside Iran’s borders, Iranian media said.

Iran’s government has been criticized by hard-liner supporters for its cautious posture during the war in Gaza.

With the attacks this weekend, Ms. Vakil said: “I think Tehran saw a need to draw this red line and make it clear to Israel that Iran does have red lines and would not continue to tolerate the slow degradation of its position.”

Tehran felt it had to respond, even if its attack prompted firm American backing and widespread Western diplomatic support for Israel, taking some of the heat off Israel over its war in Gaza, at least temporarily, and again isolated Iran.

Now, Ms. Vakil said, the two sides were in a standoff in which both were prepared for escalation despite knowing it would cause huge damage to themselves.

At the same time, the old equation has changed, with Israel and Iran hitting each other directly, on each other’s territory, and not through Iranian proxies abroad.

The Israeli strike on Iran’s Embassy compound in Damascus, followed by a direct Iranian strike on Israel, represents a dangerous new chapter in the long, sometimes hidden war between Israel and Iran, which has said it wants Israel to be wiped off the map. Sometimes known as “the shadow war,” the conflict has been carried out mainly between Israel and Iran’s allies and proxies — in Gaza, southern Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and Syria.

Both sides claim they are acting in national self-defense — Israel against groups committed to its destruction, with Iran as their prime ally and controller, and Iran against any potential Israeli war against it, often in the name of the Palestinians.

Iran increasingly refers to its rapidly expanding nuclear program , which has enriched uranium to near weapons-grade, as a deterrent against Israel, while at the same time denying that it has any intention of building a nuclear weapon. But increasingly Iran is considered by experts as a nuclear-threshold state, able to create weapons-grade nuclear material within weeks and a crude nuclear weapon within a year or so.

Iran is also going through a slow and complicated transition as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader and commander in chief, is said to be ailing and faced a 2022 domestic uprising , led by women, that demanded an end to clerical rule.

Mr. Khamenei himself ordered the strikes on Israel from inside Iran to send a clear message that Iran was shifting from “strategic patience” to a more active deterrence, according to four Iranian officials, two of them members of the Revolutionary Guards. They requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

“Iran’s operation has a crystal-clear message to Israel and its allies that the rules of the game have changed and from now on, if Israel strikes any Iranian targets or kills any Iranians, we are willing to strike in a big way and from our own soil,” Nasser Imani, a prominent analyst based in Tehran who is close to the government, said in a telephone interview. “The days of covert operations and patience are over.”

Iran also wanted to seize what it viewed as a “golden opportunity” to retaliate at this scale, because Israel was being so widely criticized over Gaza, including by its key allies, like the United States, Mr. Imani said.

Iran’s reach for regional hegemony, enhanced by its proxies and its nuclear abilities, has antagonized the traditional Sunni Arab governments of the region, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Gulf nations. The Islamic Revolution that overthrew the monarchy in 1979 was at its start aimed at regional revolution, overthrowing these governments, most of which are monarchies or military dictatorships, so Israel’s efforts to limit the power of Iran, a non-Arab Shiite nation, have had quiet support from Arab countries, including Israel’s war against Hamas.

Now the risks of regional escalation have gone up considerably. Iran has been careful during the war in Gaza to restrain its proxies surrounding Israel against major strikes, and to avoid major Israeli retaliation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon in particular. Hezbollah, with its many thousands of rockets aimed at Israel, is considered a major deterrent preventing Israel from directly attacking Iran and especially its nuclear and missile program.

Given Iran’s new isolation after this attack, Israel should not respond, said Bruno Tertrais, the deputy director of the Foundation for Strategic Research in France. “But a threshold has been crossed,” he said. And the threshold for “a massive Israeli attack on Iranian territory,” he continued, “always an extreme option for Israel whatever the commentators say — is now lowered.”

Mr. Netanyahu, who has been warning of the threat from Iran for two decades and faces severe pressure to respond from within his shaky far-right coalition, may choose to riposte with more force, either at Iran directly or at Hezbollah. But Washington, not having been warned of the Damascus attack, is likely to insist on prior consultation now.

But the modest outcome of the Iranian attacks “may strengthen an Israeli perception that Tehran is on the back foot, lacking the willpower and capacity for deeper engagement, and that now is the moment for Israel to inflict a long sought after deeper blow on Iran and its regional proxies,” said Julien Barnes-Dacey, the director of Middle East and North Africa for the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Israel’s challenge was always “to thwart the main thrust of the attack while still leaving an opening that will enable the Iranians to say that they achieved their goal,” wrote Nahum Barnea, a commentator for Yedioth Ahronoth, an Israeli daily. The danger is from the two extremes, he continued: “An overly successful Iranian operation is liable to devolve into a regional war; an overly failed Iranian operation will invite another Iranian operation.”

Iran’s mission to the United Nations suggested in a statement on social media on Saturday that if Israel does not respond, Iran would stand down.

“The matter can be deemed concluded. However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe,” the statement said . It also warned that “the U.S. MUST STAY AWAY!”
