  • The Ha Giang loop: a four-day road trip

The Ha Giang Loop, an adventurer's paradise. All photos by Jason Zullo

High in the north of Vietnam is a place where the road winds through jaw-dropping canyons and breathtaking mountain passes. The Ha Giang loop is a dream come true for adventures travellers craving the open road. Pack your gear, charge your batteries, and prepare for an adventure.

This four-day route follows the ql4c northeast from hà giang to bảo lâm, and the ql34 southwest from bảo lâm back to hà giang., day 1: ha giang city to yen minh.

Get an early breakfast in Hà Giang city before hitting the road. As you head north on the QL4C, the landscape quickly transforms into a limestone mountain range, covered with lush jungle. Soon you’ll reach the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The highlight of this section of the trip is Heaven’s Gate Pass, where you’ll get your first taste of exhilarating views along with challenging, tight curves.

Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark

Cruising down from Heaven’s Gate Pass, you’ll arrive in Tam Sơn -- a town surrounded by jutting, forested hills -- just in time for lunch. Here the restaurants and road stalls serve classic Northern Vietnamese fare. And like anywhere else in the country, a great Vietnamese coffee is not hard to find.

Kids playing in Ha Giang

Once you’re refuelled, continue on the QL4C towards Yên Minh. The road follows the beautiful Mien River before climbing through a tall canyon. Cruise though karst plateaus and mountain passes before arriving at Yên Minh, where you can settle in at a local hotel for the evening.

Yen Minh District

TIP: It’s best to reserve your hotel or homestay ahead of time when staying in smaller towns: the best accommodations fill up quickly, especially during high season.

Day 2: The Vietnamese Border

Enjoy a steaming bowl of pho for breakfast before you set off for Dong Van, taking the QL4C northeast. The steep road quickly rises above the tree line, revealing an otherworldly landscape of eroded limestone karsts with incredible views at every turn. Dốc Chín Khoanh (Nine Turn Pass), is a great place to stop and admire the sets of curved roads descending into the valley below. Stop in the Sà Phìn area for food and fuel.

Dong Van City Ha Giang Loop

A   three-hour detour takes you to the Lũng Cú Flag Tower. The 360-degree views over the border into China are worth the effort. Back on the QL4C, you’ll have no shortage of stunning views on the way to Đồng Văn, where you’ll stay. Set aside time to visit a local market, either at night or in the early morning, and see the colourful ethnic minorities going about their business.

Colourful local markerts

TIP: Be sure to check with your host in Dong Van about dates and times for the local markets. It’s a cultural experience you won’t want to miss.

Day 3: Đồng Văn and Mã Pí Lèng Passes

Today you’ll encounter what is arguably the most mind-blowing stretch of road in all of Vietnam. From Đồng Văn all the way to Mã Pí Lèng Pass, the valley floor drops far below as you wind your way through massive peaks and canyons. The only problem may be the number of stops you feel compelled to make, as every turn is full of picture-perfect views.

Ma Pi Leng pass

Mèo Vạc is only 24 kilometres from Đồng Văn, but it will take most of your morning to reach it, if you stop to appreciate the panoramic views along the way. Once there, enjoy this quaint town, which has colourful character and more than a few options for lunch.

For a quick detour, take a left off of QL4C at the bottom of Mã Pí Lèng Pass onto side road 193A. It’s a short but fun ride offering a closer look at the winding Nho Quế River below.

Ha Giang Loop Guide

You’ll finish the day in Bảo Lâm, a small hamlet with wonderfully warm locals. Spend a few hours relaxing in this remote setting, readying yourself for the drive back to Hà Giang in the morning.

Day 4: Back to Hà Giang City

Start the last day of your trip with a simple breakfast and stock up on provisions to make the journey back to Ha Giang. From Bảo Lâm, take QL34 southwest towards Hà Giang. The road follows the Gâm River most of the time, making for an enjoyable drive along the valley floor. There will still be plenty of twists and a few passes but nothing as strenuous as before.

Ha Giang Loop Travel

Stop in Bắc Mê for bite at one of the local food stalls. You’ll find fewer towns in the last stretch before reaching the city.

Arrive back in Hà Giang City and treat yourself to some modern comforts after all the miles travelled over the last four days.

The owner of Ha Giang Hostel is an extremely helpful individual. He will go above and beyond to make sure your experience in and around Ha Giang meets -in my case exceeds- expectstions. I rented a motorbike for a week. Had no issues with it despite challenging -winter; frosty, rainy muddy- conditions. Ha Giang Hostel staff was always online to assist and advise. If you are up for a motorbike adventure, look no further.

The hosts of the hostel were absolutely amazing!! From helping us plan and book the Ha Giang loop, booking our night bus through WhatsApp while we were on the loop, getting our laundry done in the limited time before our bus left in the evening and letting us shower and use one of the rooms for free. Would definitely recommend everyone to stay here!

We booked the 3 day 2 night Ha Giang Loop Tour and they arranged pick up from Sapa since we were there at the time.

We had two easy riders (local guides) for me and my girlfriend. The guides know the loop like the palm of their hand and stopped us at all the beautiful places with amazing scenery. This loop is something all adventure seekers should not miss.

Ha Giang Loop 4-Day Itinerary with Map – Tour + Motorbike Routes

Picture a 300 km-long road where spectacular scenery, breathtaking views, unspoiled nature, and colorful ethnic groups unravel in front of you. That’s it, it’s the Ha Giang Loop in Northern Vietnam.

Ha Giang province is by far the most magical place in Vietnam, it’s also the perfect place for a motorbike road trip – but if driving is not your thing, you can also do the Ha Giang Loop via a tour .

Ha Giang Loop Tour With A Local Guide

Most of the province is part of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark featuring amazing karst peaks, black limestone rocks, high mountains, along with deep valleys, and winding rivers. Some of the rock formations there date back from the Cambrian (about 550 million years ago).

The road is spotted with small villages, sometimes just a couple of houses, and endless fields, the locals living mostly from farming. The villagers managed to tame the mountains and create terraced rice, corn, tea, and flax plantations, among others, creating spectacular scenery along the way.

The villages are pretty far apart from each other and the traffic really light, you will get the feeling of the remoteness of the province. The clouds in the morning give it a surreal touch, prepare to be amazed!

Travel tip  – Before any international trip, make sure to   get travel insurance  and check  visa requirements.

Ethnic Minorities in Northern Vietnam

The Ha Giang Loop is not all about the scenery, it’s also about the rich ethnic diversity of the Ha Giang province. Along the way, you will meet many people wearing colorful traditional clothing, especially at the local markets. The markets are also the best places to buy handicrafts and try local food (ask before you start on which dates and where the markets are held).

Related – Vietnam Bucket List – Top Destinations to Add to your Itinerary

Du Gia Market - Ha Giang Loop - Vietnam - Ethnic minorities

The people here are unbelievably friendly, expect the children to wave at you and try to high-five you when you pass by them on your motorbike. You will only see smiling faces along the way. Try to stop in small shops to have a drink, this is the best way to interact with locals (bring a translator).

Locals usually don’t mind having their picture taken but always ask first, they’re pretty shy about it.

On your way, you can expect to meet mostly with Tays, Black Hmong, Lolos, and Nungs. The men usually are dressed the same way: with a beret and a Chinese-like black shirt. You will differentiate the women with their clothes:

  • Tays women wear a black costume with a colorful belt and usually wrap their hair in a black shawl.
  • Black Hmong women wear a short black skirt and black leg warmers; they have an embroidered jacket with two parts hanging on each side which they bring in front and hold with a belt. They wear a big silver necklace and wrap a shawl around their head.
  • Lolo traditional clothing is probably the more colorful of the Ha Giang province, they wear a colorful skirt and an embroidered jacket full of colors, they wear a hat with ribbons and trinkets.
  • Nung women wear black clothes with red embroideries, and a red “hat” made of fabrics and jewelry.

Ha Giang, Woman walking along the road

Along the main road don’t expect to see exclusively traditional houses, you will pass many small cities, and even in the villages, you’ll mostly see concrete houses, if you want to see a more rural lifestyle you’ll have to take the small roads, usually in bad shape though.

Read more about ethnic minorities in Vietnam.

Ha Giang Motorbike Loop 4-Day Itinerary

The Ha Giang motorbike loop will take you around 4 days to complete , which is ideal if you want to see everything.

If you’re in a hurry, you can skip Du Gia and from Niem Son go back to Yen Minh and then to Ha Giang City. You can do this Ha Giang loop in 2 days, but you’ll have to rush and miss many interesting places.

Where to spend the night

Day 1: Ha Giang to Yen Minh – 96km Day 2: Yen Minh to Ma Le – 44km Day 3: Ma Le to Du Gia – 104 km Day 4: Du Gia to Ha Giang – 68km

Day 1 – Ha Giang to Yen Minh

On the first day, head to Yen Minh.

On the way, make a stop at Lung Tam , a Hmong Village, famous for its flax weaving. You can visit the cooperative where they will show you the traditional process from A to Z, they will even let you try some of the steps. After, you can stop by the shop and help support the local economy by buying a small souvenir. You can also check out the market if you are here on the right day.

To get to Lung Tam from Ha Giang, you have two options, the main road or the more scenic route along the river. Both feature incredible scenery and viewpoints.

If you take the road following the Song Lo River, make sure to stop at the Little Ma Pi Leng Canyon to take in the view.

If you take the main road, make sure to see some of the highlights like the Quan Ba Pass and the Twin mountains (stop at Quan Ba town, towards the middle you’ll see stairs, take them for an incredible viewpoint). Near Quan Ba, you can also take a small detour to visit the gorgeous Lung Khuy Cave.

(Quan Ba town is also known as Tam Son, Quan Ba is the district and Tam Son the village)

From Lung Tam head to Yen Minh through the main road. There you can spend the night at Tom Homestay (dorms and private rooms).

Flax field - Vietnam - Ha Giang Loop

Day 2 – Yen Minh to Ma Le

On the second day, make a stop in Sa Phin to visit the Vuong Chinh Duc Palace (also known as Dinh Vua Méo). The palace was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is a place rich in history. The entrance fee is 40k and should include a guide. The palace is open every day until 5 PM.

From Sa Phin, exit the main road and drive all the way up to the Northernmost Point of Vietnam and the famous Lung Cu flag tower – you can park at the gate of Lung Cu or keep going a bit. Make sure to get all the way on foot and climb up the Lung Cu tower to get a stunning view of Vietnam and China. Along the way, you will find plenty of amazing viewpoints and magical landscapes.

Head back to Ma Le for the night, a Lolo Village. There you can stay at Ma Le Homestay , an amazing guesthouse in Ma Le with a super friendly staff. The village is really nice as well, with a lot of traditional houses and very welcoming people, definitely worth a stop.

Ma Le Village - Buffalo - Ha Giang Loop - Vietnam

Day 3 – Ma Le to Du Gia

The stretch of road from Ma Le to Du Gia is definitely the best part of the Ha Giang Loop.

Make a stop at the market in Dong Van and stroll around, it’s similar to a regular Vietnamese market but it still is a nice stop. There you can try the delicious fried bananas if you want a snack. In Dong Van, you can also visit the Dong Van Old Quarter , with its preserved architecture and its fort overlooking the city.

Next head to Meo Vac , the scenery from Dong Van to Meo Vac is just amazing, it can get really clouded, giving it a surreal vibe, you literally end up in the clouds with just the tips of the mountain getting through. Make sure to stop at the Ma Pi Leng Pass to enjoy the view – you can also go down to the Nho Que River and take a boat ride to explore some more.

From there you have two options, either you head straight to Du Gia or you pass through Niem Son first (there’s a direct road from Niem Son to Du Gia, but it’s not on Google Maps, you will find it on Maps Me though.)

Du Gia is a small village surrounded by rice fields and mountains. If you have time, you can spend one more night there and hike to other villages in the area and/or to some waterfalls.

You will find a couple of welcoming guesthouses in the village. Du Gìa – Mường Trà Garden Homestay is a nice option with dorms and private rooms – and a beautiful garden and tasty meals.

Ma Pi Leng Pass - Dong Van - Ha Giang loop - Vietnam

Day 4 – Du Gia to Ha Giang

On the fourth day, you can hang around a bit in Du Gia, take a stroll around the village and hike to one of the nearby waterfalls – before heading back to Ha Giang City and finishing the loop.

Local woman cleaning the rice - Du Gia - Vietnam

For this last section of the loop, many people choose to make their way back to Yen Binh because the direct road from Du Gia to Ha Giang is in a terrible state. If you take the shortcut, about 20km of the road is just terrible (dirt road with patches of old concrete, and a lot of mud), but it’s doable, just go slow, and you’ll be fine.

How to get to Ha Giang City from Hanoi and Sapa

It’s an 8 hours drive from Hanoi, many buses depart daily from the My Dinh bus station (280,000 VND) – there are day and overnight buses.

You can also arrange this with one of the many travel agencies in Hanoi. They’ll come to pick you up at your hotel in Hanoi and drop you off at your hotel in Ha Giang.

It’s also an 8 hours drive from Sapa, buses depart daily from the bus station (150,000 VND), if you miss it you can always catch a bus for Lao Cai and then for Ha Giang. You can plan a stop in Bac Ha, a small village known for its Sunday market , but you’ll have to spend the night there and catch a bus the next day.

There are also several buses for Haiphong (Halong Bay) and from Cat Ba, ask your hotel to arrange it for you.

You can also get from Hanoi to Ha Giang by motorbike, either with your own or a rental. The roads are pretty good, but the journey is quite long so you might want to plan to stop for the night along the way ( Ba Be Lake is a great spot in between).

Doing the Ha Giang Motorbike Loop – Useful Tips

  • During high season you should probably book a room a couple of days in advance , many of the villages don’t have a lot of accommodation to offer; even though I went during low season, all the places I stayed were fully booked.
  • If it starts raining, just stop somewhere and wait for it to stop, it’s not worth it, and the roads become more dangerous.
  • Regarding driving a motorbike, be careful the roads are good but not very large, don’t hesitate to use the honk in the turns! I wouldn’t advise someone who never drove to start with this road and most important when you rent a motorbike ask for a good helmet!
  • Try not to do it alone, it’s safer and more fun to be in a group. It’s really easy to meet people who are about to start the loop in Ha Giang.
  • Between November and March, it gets pretty cold in the mountains, you should pack a good jacket.
  • Ha Giang permits: Officially you are supposed to buy a permit (about 10$) to be allowed in this area, but no one checked if I had mine, at the time I was there (November 2017) I hadn’t heard of any backpackers who were asked for it either.
  • Make sure to have  offline maps  (Maps.Me is great) and an offline  translation app.

Ha Giang motorbike rental: you’ll easily find a bike for rent in Ha Giang, the price is usually the same where ever you ask. You can either rent from your hotel or from one of the many rental companies in Ha Giang.

Renting a motorbike in Ha Giang is a bit more expensive than in the rest of Vietnam, we paid 170k dongs per day for a Honda Win, make sure it works well before taking it.

Ha Giang Loop Tours

For the ones who don’t want to drive a motorbike, you can still do the Ha Giang Loop. Either by bus (but you will be missing some of the villages off the road) or with a private driver. It is possible to do the Ha Giang loop by car. Many tour agencies offer this service, you can choose to go by bike or by car, more expensive but totally worth it if you can’t drive by yourself.

Here are a couple of other Ha Giang Loop Tour options:

  • 3D2N Ha Giang Tour from Hanoi + Boating on Nho Que River
  • Motorcycle Tour Ha Giang Loop, 4D/3N all-inclusive
  • From Hanoi: 5-Day Hanoi Motorbike Tour to Ha Giang
  • 3-Day Ha Giang Loop Tour by Car

The ULTIMATE guide to the Ha Giang Loop: Northern Vietnam’s BEST motorbike trip!

Last updated on March 15th, 2024

Motorbiking the Ha Giang Loop was without a doubt one of our favorite and most impactful travel experiences. This winding route through Northern Vietnam’s mountains is home to some of the most stunning scenery that Vietnam has to offer, including dramatic mountains, deep canyons, rice fields, and rivers. There are picture perfect landscapes at every turn! But beyond its scenery, the Ha Giang Loop is a chance to get immersed into Vietnamese culture. We got to experience a completely different way of life, learn about the area’s ethnic minorities, and connect with locals on a deeper level than ever before.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

Watch our epic motorbike trip in Northern Vietnam, including the Ha Giang Loop , plus the Cao Bang Province , where we saw the country’s tallest waterfall!

Whenever we think back on our time on the Ha Giang Loop, we get a tad emotional. It was all of the best things about travel: epic views, cultural experiences, new foods, and meaningful connections. In our opinion, it’s one of the must-do activities while traveling in Vietnam .  If you want to experience this slice of Northern Vietnam paradise for yourself, we’re sharing everything you need to know before tackling the Ha Giang Loop. Including the many logistics to consider, the best stops to make along the way, itinerary options, and so much more.  Whether you’re conquering the Ha Giang Loop on your own, or hiring a guide (like we did and highly recommend), we hope that this guide can give you a solid idea of what to expect along the way!

ha giang loop tour 1

What is the Ha Giang Loop?

How long does the ha giang loop take, motorbike laws, private tour or group tour, visiting the ha giang loop by car, the best ha giang loop tour, how to get to the city of ha giang , the best time to do the ha giang loop, where to stay in ha giang before and after doing the ha giang loop, is the ha giang loop safe, how are the roads on the ha giang loop, where can i store my luggage, what is the food like on the ha giang loop, where do you sleep every night, should you book your accommodations in advance or as you go, what is the cell signal like on the ha giang loop, is the ha giang loop busy, how much does the ha giang loop cost, should you tip your guide, bac sum pass, quan ba (heaven’s gate), twin mountains viewpoint (aka fairy breast mountains), lung khuy cave, lung tam weaving village, tham ma pass, hmong king’s palace, lung cu flag tower, ma pi leng pass, ma pi leng skywalk, boat ride on nho que river, du gia waterfall, back to ha giang, 3 day ha giang loop itinerary, 4 day ha giang loop itinerary, 6 day ha giang loop + cao bang itinerary, miscellaneous, ready to tackle the ha giang loop.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The Ha Giang Loop is a roughly 350 km (217 mile) multi-day motorbike loop through Vietnam’s northernmost province of Ha Giang, close to the Chinese border. It is known for its mountain passes, windy and narrow roads, drop offs, and rocky cliff sides. Plus its many small villages, which are home to some of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minorities, including the Hmong, Red Dao, and Tay.  While this road is now a popular motorbike trip for tourists, it hasn’t always been what it is today. From 1959 to 1965, thousands of local workers, plus volunteers from nearby provinces, built this road using mostly hand tools and enduring tough terrain and conditions. And upon its completion, it was given the nickname “Happiness Road” because of how many people came together to open rural parts of Vietnam to the rest of the country, giving locals more opportunities. And we can confirm it brought a lot of happiness to us as well!

Ha Giang Loop Map

Ha Giang Loop Map

The Ha Giang Loop route follows this general route, but you can also do it in reverse:

  • Start in the city of Ha Giang
  • Follow the road to Yen Minh and Dong Van
  • Detour north to Lung Cu Tower
  • Return back south to the village of Dong Van
  • Head south to Ma Pi Leng pass and the village of Meo Vac
  • From there, you’ll loop back toward Ha Giang, traveling through Mau Due and Du Gia. You can either DT176 south until you intersect with QL34 (dark blue line) OR you can cut through DT181 and repeat some of the road back to Ha Giang (pink line).

We’re sharing all the best stops to make along the route later on in this guide!

Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop can be done between 2 to 4 days. However, we think 2 days is a bit too rushed to experience everything that this loop has to offer. The most common length is 3 days/2 nights, with 4 days/3 nights offering a more relaxed pace.  Unsure which is the best choice for you? We’re including different itineraries later on in this guide.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

We actually did not complete the full Ha Giang Loop. Instead, we decided to do a 6 day adventure where we completed most of the Ha Giang Loop, plus added on the Cao Bang Province.  Instead of turning south at Meo Vac to complete the loop, we instead headed east to the Cao Bang Province, where we visited Pac Bo, the famous Ban Gioc waterfall , Angel Eye Mountain, the city of Cao Bang, and Ba Be Lake.

Ban Gioc Waterfall | Northern Vietnam Motorbike | Cao Bang Vietnam

We highly recommend the route we took! This route allowed us to experience so much more of Northern Vietnam, including many areas that had ZERO tourists. To see our full adventure and all of the stops we made, check out the two YouTube videos we filmed on the trip. Including a video on the Ha Giang Loop portion and a video in the Cao Bang Province . We are also sharing our day to day itinerary later on in this guide!

Do you need a guide for the Ha Giang Loop?

Ha Giang Loop | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

You technically do not need a guide on the Ha Giang Loop. But we HIGHLY recommend having one!  Depending on where you’re from and your type of license, you may legally be required to hire a guide (more on that next!). But even if you are able to drive your own motorbike, there are so many benefits to having a guide! First off, they know these roads like the back of their hand. They can safely navigate the roads in many conditions, plus know of all the best spots. Including many places that are not on Google Maps and would be hard to find otherwise.  You also get to learn tons from your guides about the culture and lifestyle in these remote regions. They make the experience so much more meaningful. Plus, they handle all logistics for you, including food and lodging. Our guides, Nô Vàng and Hieu, became our family and it was so hard to say goodbye. We danced and played da cau with them in the streets, taught each other new words, and had many laughs. When we think back on our time on the Ha Giang Loop, they are what we miss the most.  One of our favorite moments with our guides is when Nô Vàng decided to skip some of the busier, more popular stops and take us to his home village. We got to see the inside of his uncle’s house and even got to meet his aunt! This is something we would’ve never experienced on our own!

Ban Gioc Waterfall | Northern Vietnam Motorbike | Cao Bang Vietnam

If you rent a motorbike, make sure to check motorbike laws for your country’s driver’s license. You will need an IDP, which is an International Driver’s Permit. However, only IDPs from countries under the 1968 Vienna Convention are legal.  Unfortunately for US, Canadian, and Australian citizens, your IDP will not qualify. Without an IDP, the only way to legally drive a motorbike without a license is to drive one 50ccs or less. This may work in cities, but it will not be powerful enough in mountainous areas like the Ha Giang Loop. Because of an increase in accidents and even deaths from motorbike crashes over the past few years along the Ha Giang Loop, there has been a stronger police presence in some sections. Right after leaving Ha Giang, there is often a police checkpoint, where they’ll check your license. We’ve heard and read many stories about how the officers can confiscate your license, and even your bike, if you don’t have the correct license. Another issue with driving illegally is that if you get in an accident, your travel health insurance may not cover your medical costs. Regardless of whether you drive or are a passenger, helmets are required by law in Vietnam for anyone on a motorbike. So make sure to wear one!

Northern Vietnam Motorbike

If you are unable or do not want to drive your own motorbike, you can have an easy rider. Easy riders are basically when you hire a guide to drive the motorbike and you sit on the back. When we first learned about easy riders, we thought we would feel lame not driving ourselves. You hear all these stories about how driving a motorbike in these epic areas of Vietnam is a must do bucket list experience.  And it is! But we had never driven a motorcycle before and didn’t think the crazy roads of the Ha Giang Loop would be the best time to do it for the first time. Plus legally, we couldn’t. And despite having some hesitations about having an easy rider, we ended up LOVING it. We personally think it’s the best way to experience the loop! By having an easy rider, you still get to enjoy the best parts of the motorbike journey, like the views, the wind whipping through your hair, and being on a motorbike. But without worrying about driving or figuring out directions. It was super comfortable sitting on the back and also made it way easier to film and snap photos.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

If you do choose to do the Ha Giang Loop with a tour, you can either book a group tour or a private tour. There are pros and cons to each option! For group tours, this is a great way to meet other travelers. However, the downside is that some group tours we saw were HUGE (think 40-50 people). Which personally did not look fun to us. Another thing we hear about the group tours is that it’s a party atmosphere. Some large groups will stay in dorms, which is cheaper and can be fun, but isn’t what we were after on this trip.  So if you choose a group tour, we suggest looking into their group size. The company we chose, Ha Giang Road Trip , focuses on smaller groups of up to 10 people. But we have seen them go with less as well. We personally did a private tour. This was mostly because we were filming and wanted the freedom to stop wherever, fly our drone, and get photos. It also gave us flexibility. We could ask our guides to add stops or alter the route, giving us more of an “on our own” experience, but with the safety and expertise of guides. While we didn’t meet many other travelers, we got to spend a ton of time with our guides, which as we mentioned, was the highlight of the experience.

If you aren’t comfortable on a motorbike, you can also do the Ha Giang Loop in a car . Many tour companies offer this option. It might be a slightly safer way to experience it, but not nearly as fun, in our opinion.

Northern Vietnam Motorbike

For our Ha Giang Loop tour, we went with Ha Giang Road Trip . We chose them because they had amazing reviews and a great price. And we would HIGHLY recommend them! As we mentioned above, they focus on smaller groups, handle all logistics (and from our experience, the restaurants and lodging were all great!), and are overall just incredible people. You can book their shorter tours (2-4 days) on Tripadvisor , or by contacting them through WhatsApp (+84.948.242.421) or email ([email protected]). Since we went on a longer Ha Giang Loop tour, which isn’t on their website or Tripadvisor, we reached out to them directly. We had to pay a small amount upfront and then paid the rest when we got there, but this may work differently for Tripadvisor bookings.

If you book your tour on Tripadvisor, use our code APLUSK10 for 10% off your tour!

The only complaint we had, which is something we experienced a handful of times in Vietnam, is that communication was a bit slow at times. We are HUGE planners, but we learned that many people only plan their Ha Giang Loop weeks or days in advance. So don’t be super alarmed if communication is a bit slow.

Ha Giang Loop Trip Planning Logistics

ha giang loop tour 1

Ha Giang is located in Ha Giang Province, in very far north Vietnam. It lies about 5.5 hours north of Hanoi and the most common way to get there is by bus or van. Some tour providers will coordinate a bus or van for you from Hanoi as part of the tour or you can book on 12Go , like we did. A popular option is to take an overnight bus and get to Ha Giang very early, stay in a hostel, and then ride the next morning. But we have heard that the sleeper buses aren’t very comfortable. What we did instead was take a daytime van from Hanoi, which took about 7 hours with stops, and arrived in Ha Giang the day before our ride. That gave us time to take care of any last minute tasks and be well rested.

The Ha Giang Loop can be enjoyed year round, but since parts of the route are located at a slightly higher elevation (over 1,000 meters/3,000 feet), each season can bring a different experience. In our opinion, the best seasons to enjoy the Ha Giang Loop are spring and fall.

Spring (March-May)

In the spring, the temperatures will be cooler with occasional rain and the foliage and flowers should be in bloom. We visited in early April and had pretty perfect weather, minus one day. While some areas were more lush, others hadn’t come back to life yet from the winter. But it was still gorgeous!

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

Summer (June-August)

The summer is the rainy season. It will be very warm and rain can be heavy and frequent. Heavy rains will cause the roads to be very muddy, slippery, and dangerous. The perk of visiting at this time is that the scenery is very green and lush!

Fall (September-November)

The fall offers very pleasant conditions. It’s a drier time of year and is the most popular time for tourists. If you visit between September and October, you will also get to see the rice fields with a beautiful golden hue!

During the winter, there will likely be chilly temperatures. The scenery will be a bit more dry looking and you may run the risk of icy roads.  Keep in mind the Tet Holiday when visiting this time of year. Tet marks the first day of the Lunar New Year and is a huge week-long celebration across the country. Many Vietnamese return to their hometowns during this time and many businesses shut down for days to celebrate, so you may struggle to find dining options and activities open. For 2025, Tet will begin on January 29, 2025.

ha giang loop tour 1

There are many accommodation options to choose from in Ha Giang. If you go with a guide, your accommodation the night before your Ha Giang Loop tour might be included.  We booked our own lodging beforehand and stayed at Be’s Home . It’s a hostel, with bunks, but we had one of their private rooms. The owners are very friendly and helpful! A homemade breakfast of bread and jams is included as well. Some other options to check out are: Sun Ha Giang Hotel Tí Lầu Homestay Ha Giang Historic House Palm Ha Giang Ecolodge Odyssey Hostel Lucky House Villa & Hostel Because this is such a hotspot with backpackers, who tend to be a bit more spontaneous than us, it’s not too hard to show up and find a room somewhere. But we prefer to book in advance, to ensure we get a nice spot.

Curious how we get FREE flights and hotels? Check out our list of our favorite travel cards that have saved us thousands of dollars!

Frequently Asked Questions about the Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop is very safe from a personal safety perspective. In our experience, we didn’t encounter anything sketchy and always felt safe. We came across nothing but kindness and hospitality along the way. Of course, it’s always good to be alert of your surroundings, plus keep an eye on valuables. The biggest danger of tackling the Ha Giang Loop tour is the road itself, plus other drivers. We’ll explain more about road conditions below, but with a guide, you have a much higher chance of staying safe on the roads. However, we highly recommend getting travel insurance before tackling the Ha Giang Loop.  We’ve been using SafetyWing for a few years now and although we haven’t had to actually use it , it’s been a nice peace of mind. SafetyWing offers very affordable plans with great coverage, including covering motorbike trips.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The roads vary throughout the journey. Some parts have very nice, smooth pavement. While others are either under construction, completely dirt, or a bit more rugged. There are some sections with wide shoulders, while others will have drop offs on one side. The road is used by both motorbikes, cars, and semi trucks, but at no point did we ever notice anyone driving unsafe. It is common to pass people though! When conditions are dry, the roads are generally very safe, as long as you drive at a proper speed. When it’s wet, you’ll need to take your time and slow down for the conditions. We did have one incident during our week-long ride. On our final full day, it was raining and Adam and his driver slid out while taking a turn (at a safe speed). Thankfully, everyone was okay (minus our camera lens…RIP) and the bike was fine to keep driving. While it shook us up  a bit, we still fully recommend our guides, as they were nothing but cautious and safe the entire trip. Accidents can happen, even to experienced and safe drivers. But for 99% of people on a Ha Giang Loop tour, you will have zero issues with safety, as long as you are responsible or you hire an expert driver.

Since you’ll be on a motorbike, there isn’t much room for luggage. Your bag will be strapped to the back of the bike (and covered in case of rain), plus your guide will have some items they need to bring as well. Tour providers will have a place you can leave the rest of your luggage throughout your journey, so only pack what you need! Besides the bag you strap onto the bike, we suggest bringing a small backpack or fanny pack to wear on the bike. This is where you’ll want to put any items you want easily accessible, like sunglasses, your phone, a camera, etc. While you could get things out of the bag that is strapped down, it takes time and is kind of a hassle. For us, we were not starting and returning in the same spot, so we had to bring everything with us. Because of this, we only traveled with one backpack each (plus a small foldable backpack) for our entire 6 weeks in Vietnam. It was tough!

Dinner on Ha Giang Loop

In this part of Vietnam you won’t find much Western food. Most of the meals you eat will be Vietnamese cuisine. Since we went on a Ha Giang Loop tour, our guides chose the restaurants and ordered for us. We would typically eat family style, with lots of local dishes to sample, including meat, vegetables, and rice. It was always delicious! Although they ordered, there were a couple times where we mentioned foods we loved and they found spots for us to have it. They are also able to accommodate different dietary restrictions. For vegetarians or vegans, the restaurants always had options, including tofu based dishes. Besides food, one thing you’ll encounter a lot on the Ha Giang Loop is happy water. This is a rice wine and is VERY popular across the country. While we don’t drink alcohol, we saw many groups at restaurants and lodging enjoying happy water after their ride.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

There are many small towns and villages along the Ha Giang Loop, all of which will have small, family run hotels or homestays. We stayed in a mix of both and while all lodging was relatively basic, they were all clean.  Our favorite accommodations were the homestays! They had more of a boutique hotel feel, served meals (and sometimes had entertainment), and often were in a gorgeous setting surrounded by mountains, along a river, or both.   We will share where we stayed, plus other options, later on in this guide. Be warned, Vietnamese beds are very firm!

Me Farmstay Cao Bang Vietnam

If you go on a Ha Giang Loop tour, they will set up the accommodation for you. For those experiencing the Ha Giang Loop on your own, you likely wouldn’t have issues finding availability in each town. There are a bunch of options! Not booking in advance will give you lots of flexibility, but you may be slightly more limited in your options.

We shockingly had cell service almost the entire Ha Giang Loop. While we had SIM cards from Vietnamese cell phone providers back during our trip, we have recently switched to using eSIMs from Airalo , which is much easier!

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The Ha Giang Loop is less busy and touristy than other areas of Northern Vietnam, like Sapa, but is rapidly gaining popularity. During our Ha Giang Loop tour in early April, it was pretty busy at times. We’d often see huge packs of tour groups on the road and many of the popular spots were congested. To avoid some crowds, we highly recommend giving yourself more time in the region so you can venture further than the Ha Giang Loop. When we left the Ha Giang Loop and went towards Cao Bang, we hardly saw any tourists until we got to the Ban Gioc Waterfall .

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The cost of doing the Ha Giang Loop tour varies depending on the tour you choose (or if you go on your own), the number of days, and whether or not you have an easy rider.  Choosing to go without a guide will be the cheapest option, with motorbike rentals ranging anywhere from 180,000 VND-550,000 VND per day (about $7.40-$22.50 USD), plus insurance. Lodging is usually $20 or less per night. With a Ha Giang Loop tour, you can expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $300 per person, with an easy rider. Going on a private tour will likely cost a little bit more. While you can likely find cheaper tours than this, it’s worth paying a bit more for a reputable tour company. Our week-long private tour on the Ha Giang Loop and over to Ban Gioc and Ba Be Lake cost $660 each.

Although tipping isn’t customary in Vietnam, it is highly appreciated. You should consider tipping when the service is polite, friendly, or above your expectations. Many people tip at upscale restaurants and for massages.  When it comes to your Ha Giang Loop tour guide, they play a huge role in making your trip special. They book the accommodation, find places to eat, and make the overall experience amazing. On top of all that, they are spending many days away from their families.  A good rule of thumb for tipping is $10-$15 USD per day of the tour or about 10% of your tour price. However, if you can, we suggest doing even more. We paid our guides 20% each ($132 USD), which was about $22 per day. Make sure to get out cash at an ATM in Ha Giang before you go!

Do Ha Giang Loop guides speak English?

It is pretty common for the guides to speak some level of English, but easy rider drivers may only speak Vietnamese or their local language. Our guide Nô Vàng spoke pretty good English, but Adam’s driver Hieu did not. We were able to communicate just fine with Nô Vàng translating for us!

The best stops along the Ha Giang Loop

From tourist sites, like temples and boat rides, to simply just pulling over on the side of the road and admiring the view, there are endless things to do along the Ha Giang Loop. Which is why hiring a guide is the best choice! They know of all of the popular stops and secret spots.  But for those going on their own, or if you’re like us and just like to know what to expect beforehand, here are some of the best stops and top sights you’ll see along the Ha Giang Loop!  These are only some of the best places to stop, there is so much to see out there and you’ll be stopping a lot . Keep this in mind when you’re planning your time and expect to be out there longer than you think!

ha giang loop tour 1

While Ha Giang is the largest city along the Ha Giang Loop, there isn’t a ton to do in the town of Ha Giang itself. It’s mostly just used as a basecamp before your Ha Giang Loop tour.  We spent some time here before our ride and it was very quiet during the day, due to most people being out on motorbikes. But a couple spots we really enjoyed were Lofita 247 Nguyen Thai Hoc for coffee, tea, and a nice spot to work, as well as Phương Hạnh DONER KEBAB Bánh mỳ for delicious doner kebabs!

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

As soon as you leave Ha Giang, the scenery is incredible. But the Bac Sum Pass will be your first major pass and landmark. This is where the road starts to get really mountainous and windy! There are a handful of spots to pull over and enjoy the views from up here.

Heavens Gate | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The next major stop after Bac Sum pass is Heaven’s Gate , which sits around 1,500 meters (4,291 feet). This is the gateway to theDong Van Global Karst Plateau Geopark, which is the first geopark in Vietnam and a UNESCO site. Up here you can see sweeping views of the mountains, rice fields, and villages. And it has a cafe where you can grab drinks. We enjoyed a mango smoothie (not included in our tour price) with a view! Just about every single tour group stops at this view point. This is where the views really start to get good. It’s best if you can stop here in between the large tours, because this spot will be very busy.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

Not too far down the road and around a few bends you’ll see the Twin Mountains down in a valley off to the right. Or as our guides called them… Fairy Breast Mountains ! This is a quick roadside stop to pull over and snap a few photos.

The Dong Van Global Karst Plateau Geopark is home to many caves, but one easy one to explore is the Lung Khuy Cave . The cave was discovered in 2015 and is considered one of the most beautiful in the area. It’s a short detour to get to the cave from the main Ha Giang Loop. Inside there is a 1km walkway that circles you through, so you can admire the large amount of stalactites! Cost: 50,000 VND per person

In the Lung Tam Weaving Village you can see and learn from the Hmong people the ancient process of hemp weaving. You can watch the Hmong women preparing the fiber, dying it using natural processes and colors, and finally weaving. All of this is done by hand! Note: This stop can either be made on your way to Yen Minh or as you loop back around on the Ha Giang Loop.

Food on Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The next leg of the journey includes winding roads, epic views of the mountains, and even a forest that you’ll ride through. There are tons of pullouts to stop at, many of which aren’t on Google Maps. So if you see a group stopped, it’s probably worth checking out! After a bit of driving, you’ll make it to Yen Minh, which is the first larger town you’ll reach after Ha Giang. Yen Minh makes for a perfect stop for lunch. During our Ha Giang Loop tour, we stopped at Nhà hàng Hóa Cường to eat.  If you’re doing a 4 day route on the Ha Giang Loop, this is a good town to stay in for your first night. Tom Homestay is a great homestay. You could also stay closer to the Lung Khuy cave at one of the many homestays in the area, including Dồn Dao Homestay & Bungalow .

Ha Giang Loop

The next major mountain pass you’ll encounter is Tham Ma Pass . This steep road winds you up nine bends through a narrow mountain valley. It’s one of the most popular stops along the Ha Giang Loop! At the top you’ll get to admire the pass that you just went up, which is a very cool perspective.  But one thing to be aware of here is that you’ll encounter lots of cute local kids, dressed in traditional attire.  As cute as they might be, resist the temptation to take photos of them or give them money. We’ve read that unfortunately they are forced to be there, instead of in school, to make money. The more people give them money the more incentive they have to be there.

The Hmong King’s Palace is one of the most important sites for the Hmong people. It was built in 1902 and was the residence of two wealthy landowners and their families who were regarded as kings by the local Hmong people. This is a popular stop on most Ha Giang Loop tours! Cost: 10,000 VND per person

Dong Van, Northern Vietnam

After driving through some of the most epic peaks of the trip for sunset, we made it to the next major town along the Ha Giang Loop, Dong Van. It was a much larger town than we expected! This is where we stayed the first night of the motor bike trip, at Thái Tâm Motel . We also had dinner at Nhà hàng Tình Cốc Đồng Văn , plus breakfast the next morning at Ethnic House lounge bar, hostel & restaurant . After visiting the Lung Cu Flag Tower the next day, we had lunch at Big Hai Rice (one of our favorite meals on the loop!) and grabbed coffee at Cà Phê Tam Giác Mạch . One of the neatest parts of Dong Van is the Ancient Town area. It reminded us of an even more authentic Hoi An ! If you happen to be here on a Sunday, there is a big market where many of the local ethnic groups come and trade.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The Lung Cu Flag Tower is a 33m (108 ft) flag tower representing the northernmost point of Vietnam! The border with China and the actual northernmost point is another few kilometers north. But as you drive here, you will have the fenced Chinese border on the left of you. It’s pretty wild! To get here, you will have to take a detour off the main Ha Giang Loop, which is accessible from Dong Van. But it’s totally worth it! The scenery on this stretch was pretty insane, as were the roads. We made a quick stop at Khe Lia Panorama on the way to the flag tower, which has nice views, plus snacks and drinks for sale. At the Lung Cu Flag Tower itself, you’ll find the biggest Vietnamese flag that you’ll ever see! The flag is 54 square meters, representing the 54 ethnic groups of Vietnam. It costs 25,000 VND per person to enter and climb about 100 steps to the top, which we highly recommend! You’ll have 360 degree views and it’s especially cool to look into China!

Ma Pi Leng Pass | Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

After the Lung Cu Flag Tower we headed back into Dong Van for lunch and coffee, before riding east to the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass .  The Ma Pi Leng pass is an epic stretch of road looking down into the Tu San Canyon, the largest canyon in Southeast Asia! You’ll have an evolving view every few minutes, so you’ll want to stop in different spots to capture it. But this spot is one of the most iconic! It’s hard to make this claim, but the views from this pass are one of the best views on the Ha Giang Loop!

Ma Pi Leng Pass | Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

The Ma Pi Leng Skywalk is a short hike to get above the road and have an even better view of the valley below and mountains in the distance. At this spot you’ll find a large monument and a side road that will take you out to a precarious looking rock that sticks out from the side of the mountain.  Despite there being a sign indicating no motorbikes, many people still drive to the viewpoint. Much of the path is a narrow sidewalk and the path will soon turn to slick rock to the viewpoint, so we suggest walking instead. Just be careful! It is very narrow and has a steep drop off on one side.

Nho Que River | Ha Giang Loop

Hands down our favorite activity along the Ha Giang Loop portion of our Northern Vietnam motorbike trip was the boat ride on the Nho Que River .  Not only is it a journey to get down to the river (it’s VERY steep and winding), but once you get to the bottom, you then get to ride through the canyon! When you get to the parking area you must pay 5,000 VND for parking and then walk to the ticket counter. Tickets for the boat ride are 120,000 VND per person and the boat ride is about an hour long. From the ticket office you’ll get on a bus which will shuttle you to the actual marina and you’ll be assigned a boat. If you booked a Ha Giang Loop Tour, this will all be included in the price! It was so wild gliding through the canyon, with its massive canyon walls towering over us. We went close to sunset, so the golden light just made the canyon even more magical!  After you ride through the canyon, the boat will pull up to a beach and you can get off the boat for a few minutes. Make sure you bring your swimsuit, because you can jump off the back of the boat. The water is so nice and refreshing!

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

Meo Vac is a short drive from the Nho Que River. Depending on your itinerary, you may stop here for lunch or stay the night, which is what we did. During our time in Meo Vac we ate at the Thanh Phương Restaurant and Tuấn Hen restaurant , grabbed coffee at Cafe Phố Đá Mèo Vạc , and stayed at Khách Sạn Mai Đào Note: The typical Ha Giang Loop tour turns west from Meo Vac, down towards Mau Due. But this is where our time on the Ha Giang Loop ended. Instead of looping back to Ha Giang, we continued southeast toward Cao Bang and other major destinations in Northern Vietnam. If you’d like to see those stops, check out our 6 day itinerary below!

Mau Due is another town on the Ha Giang Loop that you could stop at for lunch. Nhà Hàng Giang Điệp 1976 or Nhà Hàng Hoàng Thắm look like good choices! Instead of staying the night here, we’d recommend Meo Vac or Du Gia, which have more options.

After leaving Mau Due, there will be tons of different viewpoints to stop at. One of the first is Sa Li Pass , which has beautiful views of the rice terraces! From there, you can also stop by Di tích đồn Pháp , which has free ruins of an old French military building. As you continue south, you’ll make it to the Lung Ho Viewpoint , where you can grab a coffee with a view at Mountain Coffee .

ha giang loop tour 1

One of the highlights of the final stretch of the Ha Giang Loop (and the thing we were most bummed to miss) is the Du Gia waterfall . Not only is the waterfall beautiful, but you can swim here! This is a very popular spot on the Ha Giang Loop tours, so if you are riding on your own, we suggest getting here very early or later in the day, to avoid the crowds. If you’d like to stay the night in Du Gia, check out Du Già Coffee View Homestay or Du Già Village Homestay . Both look INCREDIBLE!

After Du Gia, you have a couple options to get back to Ha Giang. You can either continue south on DT176 until you intersect with QL34 OR you can cut through DT181 and repeat some of the road back to Ha Giang. We think the DT181 option would have more sights to see!

Ba Be Lake | Northern Vietnam Motorbike | Cao Bang

We were lucky enough to spend 6 days exploring the Ha Giang Loop and Cao Bang Province. This route enabled us to see some of the best highlights on the Ha Giang Loop, explore a much more remote, less visited region of the country, and see a beautiful waterfall and lake! Some of our days on this route included a lot of driving, with just quick stops to eat and see viewpoints.  But we loved it! We rode through so many small towns and villages, where tourists rarely go, and got many squeals and waves from the local kids. It was awesome! Here’s our exact 6 day Northern Vietnam motorbike itinerary!

  • We had breakfast at our hostel in Ha Giang (Be’s Place)
  • Our drivers picked us up, we went to the Ha Giang Road Trip office to pay our final balance, pack up the bikes, and hit the road.
  • Our guide Nô Vàng surprised us by taking us to his village. It was such a highlight!
  • We rode until sunset, with amazing views along the way, before checking into our hotel in Dong Van
  • We enjoyed dinner with our guides in Dong Van

Day 2 (Dong Van – Lung Cu – Ma Pi Leng Pass – boat ride – Meo Vac)

  • We had breakfast in Dong Van
  • Took a detour up to the Lung Cu Flag Tower
  • Popped back into Dong Van for lunch and afternoon coffee

  • Had dinner all together in Meo Vac

Day 3 (Meo Vac – Cao Bang – Khau Coc Cha Pass – Me Farmstay)

  • We had breakfast and coffee in Meo Vac
  • Continued east to Bao Lac. On the way, we stopped at a river where we got to watch local kids jump off a bridge into the water. They filmed some of it on our GoPro, which was fun!
  • We stopped in Bao Lac for lunch at Nhà Hàng 3 Miền /Vua Gà Tươi (chicken rice) Nhận Đặt Cơm .
  • Drove up the CRAZY Khau Coc Cha Pass , with its 14 turns
  • Stopped for a drink and snack at the top of the pass
  • Spent the rest of the afternoon stopping at viewpoints until we made it to the Me Farmstay
  • Enjoyed dinner at Me Farmstay

  • We had breakfast at Me Farmstay

  • Spent the rest of the day driving. Along the way, we stopped at Khách Sạn, CaFe Hoa Hồng for coffee and played da cau (foot badminton) in the middle of an epic road!
  • We made it to Yen Nhi Homestay for the night. This was our favorite place we stayed! It has a cave and the cutest puppies!
  • If you have time, you can also check out Động Ngườm Ngao cave.
  • We had dinner at Yen Nhi Homestay, where we also got to listen to traditional music from the Tay Ethnic Minority and do a traditional dance!

Ban Gioc Waterfall | Northern Vietnam Motorbike | Cao Bang Vietnam

Day 5 (Yen Nhi Homestay – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Angel Eye Mountain – Cao Bang)

  • We started our morning with breakfast at the Yen Nhi Homestay
  • Made a quick stop at Tich Truc Lam Temple to see the amazing views of the area and the Ban Gioc Waterfall.
  • Saw the EPIC Ban Gioc Waterfall , the tallest waterfall in Vietnam! We also road a boat closer to the falls for a small fee. You can read our full guide to the Ban Gioc Waterfall here .

  • Once we made it to Cao Bang (which is a large city!), we checked into the Thanh Loan Hotel .

  • Spent the night at the night market in Cao Bang, which was an unexpected surprise! We got to do the traditional dance with locals and take many photos, as we were one of the few foreigners there.

Day 6 (Cao Bang – Ba Be Lake – Homestay)

  • We started our morning with coffee at Nâng café , which was a GEM!
  • After telling our guides that we love Bun Cha, they found us a spot in town to get breakfast at. We forgot to pin the location though 😫
  • The rest of the day was spent driving to Ba Be Lake. It was a LONG day and rainy. This is when Adam’s crash happened. We had lunch at Quán Cơm Loan Kiệm before making it to Duy Tho Homestay .
  • Spent the rest of the afternoon on a Ba Be Lake boat ride, which was beautiful!
  • We had dinner at homestay and hit the hay, before taking a long van ride back to Hanoi (which our guides coordinated) the next day.

What to pack for the Ha Giang Loop

Northern Vietnam Motorbike

Layers: Since this is a mountainous route, the weather can be unpredictable. Make sure to bring layers! Some days we started in jackets and ended in tank tops. Or vice versa!  Rain jacket: Even if visiting in the dry season, you may experience rain (we did!). Kathryn wears the Patagonia Torrentshell jacket and Adam wears a Columbia rain jacket . Our guides did have ponchos for us as well, which came in handy on a very rainy day. Temple attire : If you plan to visit any temples, make sure you have pants or a skirt that covers your knees and something to cover your shoulders. We suggest bringing something light and airy to avoid getting too hot! Shoes : Since you’ll spend a lot of time on motorbikes, we suggest having good, enclosed shoes. We wore ALTRA Lone Peak 6 Trail Running Shoes ! Gloves: If you’re traveling in the colder months, these will be a big help!

Check out our ultimate Vietnam packing list for everything you’ll need in Vietnam!

Feminine hygiene products : They may not have the exact kind you like along the way, so make sure to bring enough! Toilet paper : This is something you can buy there, but we highly recommend carrying some with you. Some restrooms do not offer any or charge you a small amount to get some. Dual voltage items: In the US, the outlets are 120V, but in Vietnam they are 220V. Make sure to bring a hair dryer, straighter, or curling iron that will work with their outlets. I brought a small, dual voltage hair dryer with me to Vietnam. Bug spray: We did not encounter many bugs, but this is always good to have, just in case! Sunscreen: Depending on the weather, your body may be pretty exposed to the sun. Make sure to lather up!

We highly suggest bringing Advil, a small first aid kit, and stomach medicine, like imodium or pepto, just in case.

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

Camera: You will want a camera for this drive! Whether you bring just your phone, GoPro, or a larger camera, the Ha Giang Loop makes for some epic photos. You can see all of our camera gear here . Camera strap: We had our camera out during the entire ride, so we could film and take photos as we moved. To keep it safe, make sure you have a camera strap. We love our strap from Peak Design ! Drone: Droning along the Ha Giang Loop was EPIC! The only spot we could not drone was close to the China border, the Lung Cu Flag Pole, and when we made it to the Ban Gioc waterfall. Outlet adapters : While some outlets in Vietnam were just like the US, others were two prong and we had to use an outlet adapter to be able to use our electronics. Portable charger : We liked carrying a portable charger with us in case our phone or camera batteries got low during the day. Google Translate : Make sure to download Vietnamese for offline use on Google Translate!

Ha Giang Loop Tour | Northern Vietnam Motorbike

Cash: Make sure you have cash to pay for any extra items along the Ha Giang Loop, as well as tip your guide.  Sunglasses: These were not only helpful to have for sunny days, but also to protect our eyes along the ride. Identification: Don’t forget your passport and visa, just in case! Fanny Pack/Small Bag: Like we mentioned, it’s good to have a fanny pack or small bag to wear on the bike to carry any items you’ll want easy access to.

How To Do The Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam by Motorbike

The Ha Giang loop is arguably the most beautiful destination in all of Vietnam; I’d even go as far to say, it’s one of the most beautiful places in all of South East Asia.

Bordering China to the north of the country, this extraordinary province beholds some truly awe-inspiring scenery ranging from colossal limestone mountains, lush rice paddies, majestical flowing rivers, and kindred mountain villages create an ethereal landscape, sure to leave you mesmerized.

After spending 5 remarkable days completing a 400 KM Ha-Giang loop by motorbike, I’ve concluded that all intrepid travelers should experience this once-in-a-lifetime ride.

To cruise along some of the most magnificent mountain roads in Asia with the wind in your face and adrenaline in your veins is an empowering feeling.

In this post we will look at how to do the Ha Giang motorbike loop including what to pack and of course, what to do in Ha Giang.

A person sitting on a motorbike looking out over the jungle covered mountains of Vietnam.

How To Do The Ha-Giang Loop

What to know before you motorbike the ha-giang loop, vietnam, where to stay in ha-giang, what to pack for the ha-giang loop, how much does the ha-giang loop cost, 5 day itinerary for the ha-giang loop in vietnam.

Not only were we enchanted by the Ha Giang motorbike loop surroundings, but also the indigenous people and Vietnamese culture in this region.

We stayed in tiny villages with locals who treated us like family and allowed us to experience their extraordinary day to day lives away from industrial civilization.

(Nothing screams culture shock quite like witnessing 9-year-old children drive motorbikes on mountain roads, innocent toddlers play contently alongside a cliff edge, or admirable mothers carry out hard labor with babies strapped to their backs.)

Unlike neighboring Sapa, the Ha-Giang loop has gone under the radar of the backpacking trail in Vietnam , hidden from the millions of tourists who visit the country every year.

Subsequently, the curious nomads who do venture to the Ha-Giang province are rewarded with raw, authentic, and off the beaten path adventure.

In this article, I will be sharing our daily itinerary and experiences; this guide that will equip you with need-to-know information for a safe and enjoyable motorbike journey on the Ha-Giang loop.

motorbiking the Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam

The next few sections will provide you with everything you need to know about motorbiking in Vietnam on the Ha Giang loop route. Keep these three very important considerations in mind:

  • Most locals do not English, so we recommend learning a few key phrases in Vietnamese. Use an offline google translate app on your phone and consider buying a Vietnamese travel phrase book.
  • Although we had a local sim card, we struggled to find cell signal on the road. Make sure to have offline maps and an offline  translation app.
  • Good wifi is easy to find in hotels, homestays, and restaurants.

LiLa Inn

Despite being the road less traveled, there are a number of accommodation options throughout the Ha-Giang Loop including som of Vietnam’s backpacker hostels as well as homestays and even some hotels. We highlighted the best places to stay along the Ha-Giang in our itinerary below, but here is where to stay in the town of Ha-Giang:

  • LiLa Inn: This comfortable hostel is the perfect backpacker crash pad. Low cost, with dorm rooms and private rooms. Plus, they rent motorbikes – manual, automatic, and semi-automatic. They even boast a robust gym and will help you plan your trip and arrange transportation for your onward journey.
  • Bong Hostel:  This is one of the few hostels found in Ha Giang and a great place to stay pre-loop. Not only can you rent your bike and accessories here, but the staff is super helpful when it comes to planning your loop itinerary. It’s also a great place to meet other travelers should you be looking for companions for the ride.
  • Ngan Ha Homestay:  This is a great option for those seeking a private room – the rooms are super cheap and include a free breakfast. You also have the option to rent your bike here.
  • Hmong Moonshine : A beautiful property built right on the edge of a lake. Doubles as (you guessed it) a moonshine distillery. Run by some very friendly and helpful locals. If you need help organizing a motorbike tour around Ha Giang, Tuyen is the man to ask!

Ha Giang Road

Although your standard packing for traveling Vietnam should suffice, there are a few key extra essentials to take. Below is a list of what to pack for the Ha-Giang loop in Vietnam:

  • A reliable backpack: Broke Backpacker OG Will Hatton has been traveling with the Osprey Aether for over a decade, it’s the best pack out there.
  • Daypack: It’s VERY helpful to have a daypack for adventures. The Nomatic Navigator is our favourite!
  • Enough clothes for 3-5 days, bearing in mind you will get very dirty along the drive
  • Good-quality closed-toes travel shoes such as trainers or boots
  • Any medication you might need
  • Headtorch: It can get hella dark out there so we recommend the Petzl Actik Core
  • Swimsuit for the waterfall
  • Microfibre towel: The Sea to Summit technical towel is super lightweight and quick-drying
  • Waterproof jacket and backpack cover
  • Camera/GoPro
  • Phone with mobile data
  • A Ha Giang loop map – we suggest an offline Google/Maps.Me app or a paper map
  • Contact details of your hostel or somebody you can contact in case of emergency.
  • Battery Pack/Chargers
  • First Aid Kit: We love the AMK First Aid Kit as it’s got all you need in a compact package
  • Sufficient cash (although there are ATMs along the route)
  • A motorcycle tent if you prefer to sleep outdoors
  • We never head out on an adventure without our trusty Grayl Geopress Water Bottle which allows us access to clean water wherever we find ourselves.

Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

How to get to Ha-Giang, Vietnam

The easiest way to access Ha-Giang is to take a bus from Hanoi.  The journey time is approximately 6-7 hours and there are morning or evening buses available.  As a guideline, we paid 150,000 VND for this service. We also recommend packing earplugs for the journey! A Ha Giang motorbike can usually be arranged upon arrival.

Best Time to Visit Ha-Giang

If you are wondering when is the best time to visit Ha-Giang, October through to April are considered the best months to visit Ha-Giang as it is dry season and the roads are safer to drive.

Where to Rent a Bike in Ha-Giang

Although there are a number of Ha Giang motorbike rental rental shops in Ha Giang town, we highly recommend LiLa Inn. The bikes are in perfect condition and they also provide all the accessories you will need, such as straps, gloves, helmet etc. If you take a Ha Giang loop tour through an agency they will provide a bike.

They will give you a detailed map of the loop, plus a ton of useful information and recommendations for along the way. They also provide free motorbike lessons for those who aren’t so confident on a bike.

Below are the bikes available along with the daily rental prices:

  • 125cc Automatic – 200,000 VND
  • 110cc Semi-Automatic – 150,000 VND
  • 125cc Manual – 250,000 VND

LiLa Inn discounts their rate for anyone renting the bike for more than a couple days, so ask them to quote you for the length of your trip. Remember that you need to buy insurance as well when you rent your bike, which can nearly cost as much as the rental itself.

TIP:  Although it is possible to complete the drive on a powerful automatic, it is recommended that you take either a semi-automatic or manual bike. The reason being, you will have more control over the demanding conditions of the mountain roads.

If this is your first time on a geared bike, do not fear. We had only ever driven an automatic before we got to Ha Giang, however, a short lesson on a semi-auto from the staff at our hostel had us feeling like pros in no time.

How to Drive the Conditions of the Ha-Giang Loop

It is important to note that the drive can be challenging at times, especially if you do not have much experience riding a motorbike. The roads can be extremely narrow, and scaling a cliff edge while mighty construction vehicles squeeze by can be somewhat nerve-racking.

You should be prepared for bad road conditions, steep inclines, and sharp hairpin bends.

The key is to keep your cool and drive within your limits. We witnessed a few accidents along the drive, thankfully none too serious, though they were usually due to speeding.

Take your time and appreciate the picturesque surroundings; not only will it be a safer journey but a more enjoyable one as well.

Tip:  If you do not feel confident riding a bike yourself, you have 2 options:

1. Hire a driving guide while you ride in a buggy in the back (we recommend contacting Bong Hostel in advance to check availability).

2. Just do the Ha-Giang Loop by car … the scenery is the same, but the likelihood of a fuck-up is probably way smaller!

Ha Giang Loop views

Thankfully, completing the loop is financially achievable for all of you broke backpackers. Below you can find a breakdown of our approximate daily spending. The total per person per day was about 460,000 VND, equivalent to $20.

Motorbike rental – 150,000 VND

Fuel – 40,000 VND

Accommodation – 100,000 VND

Meals – 120,000 VND

Water/Snacks – 50,000 VND

Total per day – 460,000 VND ($20)

Map of Ha Giang

Below we have outlined our detail 5-day itinerary on the Ha Giang Loop. Some travellers talk of a Ha Giang loop 3 days tour but in this post, we are sticking to the 5 day loop.

Day 1 on the Ha-Giang Loop: Ha Giang to Quan Ba – 65km

Following a tasty and fulfilling breakfast at Ngan Ha Homestay ,  we made our way over to Bong Hostel  to rent our bikes.

Not knowing quite what to expect from the loop, we were feeling a little anxious at this point; however, the staff at Bong Hostel really helped to ease our minds. We were given the full low down and what to expect from the journey ahead, as well as an abundance of tips and recommendations for along the way.

After a short lesson on a semi-auto bike and gathering the necessities for the drive, we were ready to hit the road.

Excitement and anticipation consumed us as we embarked into the unknown. It wasn’t long before we were out of the town and heading into rural territory.

beautiful views in Vietnam

The roads became narrower and the air cleaner. Soon, we were encompassed by flourishing rice paddies and colossal limestone cliffs; little did we know that this was only a taste of the beauty to come.

At first it took some restraint to not stop every 10 minutes, but eventually, we hit the first major mountain pass of the journey – The BAC Sum Pass.

As we steadily advanced the mountain, cautiously maneuvering the hairpin turns, we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the valleys below.

We cruised the landscapes at a steady pace, allowing ourselves to be allured by nature’s ubiquitous beauty.  Hours past hazily until our bodies reminded us that it was time to refuel.

Conveniently, we soon approached Diem Gioi Thieu Va Ban,  a serene cafe situated in the mountains after the Bac Sum Pass. We planned to stop briefly for refreshments but found ourselves marveling at further awe-inspiring views for over an hour.

Walking along the Ha Giang loop road

It was soon time to complete the last leg of our journey to Quan Ba.  Along the way, we passed through almighty Quan Ba Pass,  otherwise known as Heaven’s Gate  – a pretty accurate description considering the heavenly views and majestic sunset projecting a golden glow on everything it touched.

We made it to Hong Thu Homestay  just in time to watch the sunset over the glorious terraced fields, followed by a traditional Vietnamese dinner cooked fresh by the matriarch of the family.

It was a wonderful evening encouraged by unlimited rice wine and our hosts dancing, playing games, and singing karaoke. To this day, our first night on the Ha-Giang Loop remains one of my most memorable homestay experiences.

Day 2 on the Ha-Giang Loop: Quan Ba to Yen Minh – 78km

After a deep, rice wine-fuelled sleep, we awoke to a fresh morning and a delicious breakfast of pancakes and fruit. Wanting to learn more about the family who welcomed us, we spent the morning communicating through Google Translate, learning about their village traditions stories.

The family seemed thrilled that we were so interested in their way of living, and we were grateful that they wanted to share it with us.

where to stay on the giang-loop vietnam

It was almost midday before we hit the road, and after an exceptional first day, we were left wondering how it could possibly get any better.

But the route continued, leading us through one picturesque road after another, and occasionally a remote mountain village. The local kids would run out to high-5 us, excited to see a tourist in a rather desolate place, while their parents waved curiously.

Motorbiking Ha Giang Loop Itinerary in Vietnam

We were not far from the town of Yen Minh when we stumbled across Yen Minh Pine Forest.  Located on a hairpin bend at the peak of a mountain pass, the forest wasn’t an attraction we expected, making our discovery all the more exciting.

In the heart of the verdant forest, we felt undeniable energy from nature and the views into the valleys.

Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam

Immersed in the powerful environment, we stayed until golden hour graced us with beams of light. It was later than we expected and although we did not plan to stay in Yen Minh, we knew we wouldn’t make it to the next town before nightfall, so we located a guest house nearby to pitch up for the night.

Although Yen Minh isn’t exactly geared for tourists, AKa HomeStay  offered us clean and comfortable accommodation for a reasonable price. There are also a number of eateries in town that ensured we didn’t go hungry.

Day 3 on the Ha-Giang Loop: Yen Minh to Lung Cu to Dong Van – 115km

With a bit of ground to make up from the previous day, we rose early and after a good breakfast at August Coffee, and continued our journey on the Ha-Giang Loop.

You get the gist by now; the landscapes were mind-blowing, and the natives’ culture was bewildering. Often we even found ourselves navigating through herds of cows, buffaloes, and goats.

Motorbiking Ha Giang Loop Itinerary in Vietnam

The first thing on our Ha-Giang itinerary for the day was the Sung La Valleys.  Positioned slightly off the beaten path, Sung La is rarely visited by those completing the loop; however, we had been advised by a local not to miss it.

When a local shares a hidden gem with you, you do not pass that shit up, so we set off on the steep and treacherous road to Sung La Village.  As we reached the peak of the mountain we understood exactly why our friend recommended this village.

1500m above sea level, prodigious mountains stretched as far as the eye could see while flourishing fields adorned the valleys below. Do be cautious though; this drive is not for the faint-hearted and only confident bikers should attempt it.

Sung La Valley views on Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam

After admiring the views for as long as we could spare, we continued in search of the Lung Cu Flagpole – an iconic landmark that represents the northernmost area of Vietnam .

To reach this monument we had to detour slightly off route again, and the roads were somewhat perilous; however, we’ve learned that the difficult roads almost always lead to beautiful destinations, and on this occasion, it was certainly true.

Flag pole on Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam

As we reached the charming village of Lung Cu, the striking Vietnamese flag danced proudly in the wind at the peak of the tower. It was midday by the time we commenced the 500 step climb to the top, and the unforgiving peak of day sun made it feel more challenging than it actually is.

Our weariness, however, was short-lived as we cast our eyes over the beautiful landscapes before us. Immense verdant mountains stretched all the way into China where lush rice paddies graced the rural areas encompassing the village.

Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam

We attempted to locate the China border  because we had heard that it was possible to access it by driving down a dirt track located just before Lung Cu village; however, it was guarded on the day we were there.

It’s worth checking it out if you can, but whatever you do, do not actually cross the border; the penalties are not pretty!

Tired and hungry we made our way to Dong Van, where we would chow down and rest for the night. It turned out to be a relatively developed town hosting an abundance of hotels and restaurants, as well as a small market selling an array of local goods.

We even got to watch a pretty good sunset over the rice paddies and limestone formations that encompass the town. Green Varst  did the business with some great food, while Plum Homestay  gave us cheap and comfortable digs for the evening.

The evening of day 3 on the Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam.

Day 4 on the Ha-Giang Loop: Dong Van to Du Gia – 130km

We woke up on the fourth morning with another big day ahead of us. It was to be the longest leg of our journey so far, but also said to be the most picturesque.

We were not quite sure how it could possibly get any better, but we were definitely ready to find out! After a tasty and fulfilling breakfast at Green Varst, we were on the road again, and it wasn’t long before we knew the drive would be a game-changer.

Mornings on the Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam

Shortly after leaving Dong Van Town, we hit the iconic Ma Pi Leng Pass, a grandeur mountain road approximately 20km in length. Sitting at an altitude of around 1500 m, the pass is said to be the most beautiful mountain road in all of Vietnam, a bold statement impossible to argue with.

Tremendous limestone cliffs surround a flourishing valley, and the striking Nho Que River sparkles emerald green through a misty haze. We maneuvered the exhilarating twists and turns of the road, an effortless drive that almost felt like there was no bike at all; we were soaring through the landscapes.

I even remember having to choke back tears. It may sound dramatic, but it just seemed to have that kind of immense power over us.

It was impossible to know exactly when we had reached the end of the pass, as the breathtaking views continued all the way to Du Gia,  where we would spend our last night.

The thrilling mountain roads to reach the charming mountain village were as endless as the farmers’ fields adorned with conspicuous looking plants! Feel free to stop and take a look, but I would refrain from pocketing any if you fancy leaving in one piece….

We arrived at Du Gia Homestay  just in time for a delicious family dinner, joined by a number of other travellers celebrating their final night of the loop. Together we drank rice wine and vehemently swapped stories of our unforgettable experiences in Ha Giang.

Day 5 on the Ha-Giang Loop: Du Gia to Ha Giang – 81km

On our last day on the Ha-Giang loop, we were elated by our achievements and appreciative for what we’d experienced, but our hearts were heavy as the trip was coming to a close. Alas, we gathered up our gear, enjoyed breakfast with a view, and set off to enjoy our final hours.

Final breakfast on the Ha-Giang Loop in Vietnam

First on the agenda was to explore a little bit of Du Gia itself.

Walking among the mounting landscapes was a powerful reminder of how small we really are. We were greeted warmly by the locals, who worked together in harmony, flawlessly creating a happy and united community.

Heading out on day 5 of the Ha-Giang Loop.

Before hitting the road we took a dip at the local waterfall. A treacherous road led us to the local swimming spot, where groups of inquisitive local children greeted and welcomed us enthusiastically before showing off their cliff jumping skills. In turn, we bewildered them with photos and boomerang clips on our phones.

It was refreshing to see children being children, enjoying nature and each other’s company instead of gadgets and social media.

Locals at the waterfall in Heading out on day 5 on the Ha-Giang Loop

When it was time to leave, we reluctantly said our goodbyes and set off on the road back to Ha Giang Town.  As we drove, we reflected on the past 5 days and our disconnection from most of civilisation.

With fresh air in our lungs and clear minds, we felt immense gratitude and love for the beautiful world we live in. We were consumed with inspiration and freedom.

Lost in our thoughts, we ended up taking a wrong turn on a (particularly) horrendous road. After checking the map we realised we were on the right track, but this road was not recommended due to its hazardous condition.

Locals at the waterfall in Heading out on day 5 on the Ha-Giang Loop.

It was too late to turn back, however, so we continued the route cautiously. It took longer than we had hoped, but we were simply thankful to arrive back to Ha Giang in one piece.

It’s worth noting that Google maps took us on this route, and although it was said to be the faster route, it turned out to be quite a stressful journey. To avoid this route we suggest following the QL4C via the DT181.

Well, that concludes our experience and Ha-Giang loop itinerary. Although the roads got hairy at times, overall, it was a safe adventure in Vietnam . As long as you keep your wits about you, you’ll be ok. Better yet, you’ll have one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life!

We hope this guide answers any questions you may have about completing the Ha Giang loop, though feel free to reach out to us with any questions. Have fun, ride slow, and remember to watch the beautiful sky.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Doing the Ha Giang loop is fairly safe if you are sensible, but there are always risks of course. So we highly recommend taking out comprehensive high-quality travel insurance for your trip from World Nomads.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Hi! Do you recommend booking the home stays in advance? I will be riding the loop solo in March this year and not sure whether I need to book the stays ahead of time or if I can chance riding into a village and finding somewhere to stay on the fly. Thanks!

If there are places you specifically want to stay book in advance.

“It is important to note that the drive can be challenging at times, especially if you do not have much experience riding a motorbike”

I think it’s probably worth mentioning seeing as you have updated this for 2020, that to do the Ha Giang Loop as with all other roads in Vietnam, you need to have a valid motorcycle license, whether that be a Vietnamese one, or your international equivalent.

The Vietnamese authorities are clamping down hard on foreigners without licenses and this should be mentioned in your post.

I just went home after 8 days of marvelous Vietnam motorbike tour to Sapa & Ha Giang. We had chances to taste almost amazing foods cooked by the locals & experience the home stay in Mai Chau, Bac Ha & Xin Man. It’s so great to ride up to Ma Pi Leng pass & to view splendid panoramic scenary and hear about the history when the locals opened the ROAD of HAPPINESS some decades ago. Here is really our lifetime trip!

Ha Giang is such a beautiful, dreamy and peaceful place! It is less touristy compared to Sapa, therefore I could totally immerse myself in the authentic and interesting local life with minority people. And the thrilling loop is absolutely worth trying when visiting Ha Giang by motorbike!!! Btw, thank you for your informative and amazing blog post!

We agree, it a super special place!

Was this your first time on a motorbike? I’m planning on doing the loop in a month or so, but it would technically be my first time on a motorbike. I’m going with a friend who is licensed in the states to operate motorcycles, who would teach me when necessary, and we are planning to do the loop in ~5 days, which I think would allow for safe speeds; we aren’t on a time crunch.

I was wondering if in your opinion, you would recommend this to someone who has no experience with motorbikes?

Honestly, I think that you should have some experience of riding a motorbike before doing the Ha-Giang Loop. There are some nasty turns and mountain passes on this route and Vietnamese drivers can be crazy, especially the truck drivers. I suggest practicing with the bike in a safe area before tackling this one. That way, you’ll have more confidence and will enjoy the loop more 🙂

Hi, Great write up, I just wish I had spent 5 days on the Loop instead of 3 (I did it back in March). If you’ve got the time to spend there on the Loop, do 4-5 days at least. 3 days was just too much riding, and my ass paid the price big-time 🙂

Love this!! We did this trip a few months ago and it was definitely a highlight for Vietnam! My favorite part was the Skywalk… or rather, the feeling of relief and accomplishment AFTER the skywalk was behind us! Thank you for sharing such a beautiful part of the world. Happy Travels!

This beautiful post brought me tears to my eyes! The Ha Giang loop is probably the most amazing motorbike tour I did in South East Asia. Now I want to do it again!!! I did the Ha Giang loop starting and ending in Lao Cai, taking the back roads along the chinese border. What a fantastic adventure!!!

Incredible post, thank you! I’m planning to do the loops with a friend whose a much more confident driver than me. What are your thoughts on two people to a bike? Doable? Thank you!

Doable! So long as you’re both confident and wearing helmets. 🙂

Amazing! Will! Thank you for all great tips. Specially in Hagiang, I’ve stayed at LiLa inn, they are excellent, very good motorbikes and good services, so cheap. Thank you

Amazing article and thank you for sharing.

Seeing a lot of comments about the weather. I’m planning to do this at the end of July, my question is, would the weather be good enough to do so?

In the IDP, I’m assuming this is a bribe like most of Asia. Any advise on how to deal with them as each country and regulatory body is different.

Thanks in advance ?

July is still the rainy season in Ha Giang so you may get some pretty grim/cloudy days. But the rice terraces will be full of water and they look like mirrors from a distance!

In regards to the IDP, it really depends on the local cops’ mood of the day. Sometimes they may be too busy to be bothered checking for them; other times they may be out on the hunt. You should just go buy an IDP, just in case.

Hey! Awesome article. When did you both do this tour? I’ve been reading up and it looks like they are cracking down on it. Also, what time of year did you go?

Thanks! Judah

I just did the Ha Giang Loop in April 2019 and can say that it is still very open to visitors. If you’ve heard stories about “cracking down,” it’s probably because the police are starting to really check for international driver’s permits. There have been some motor deaths recently and the Vietnamese authorities are trying to make sure drivers are competent enough.

In regards to the time of year, I think that early-May is the tail-end of the best time to do the Ha Giang Loop. By the end of the month, it will be raining every day and, at higher elevations, you will be stuck in the clouds thus limiting visibility to a couple of meters.

Hope that helps!

thanks for sharing this experience, it will be very usefull for my Ha Giang loop i’m organizing:)

Enjoy Ha Giang! It is really spectacular.

Hi there We are planning to set off on Ha Giang Loop tomorrow and I just would like some reassurance about the roads. Did you do any other motorbike routes in Vietnam to compare the roads with. We have done DaLat Loop 3 day and golden/ Hai Van 4 day loop, plus other day rides but we are a couple with our 11 year old son travelling Asia at the end of our 6 month trip with us and I just want to have some other opinions to consider riding myself on our last bike ride in Vietnam. Many thanks for your time Linny

Hi guys! What a great guide! Been scouring the internet for something like this, so thanks! What time of the year did you visit Ha Giang? We are planning on going for 3 days in March but are conscious that the weather (and photos) may not turn out like you had it. Thanks in advance!

I was in Ha Giang in April and can say that the weather is still good. A bit hazy but otherwise clear skies. You’ll sometimes get thunderstorms but these do a great job of clearing up the haze.

Hey, you mentioned taking the other route that’s less stressful, however does that mean you miss out on the beautiful views and places you went? Thanks,

Hi, I read on another site that since October 2018 it’s mandatory for the driver to have an Vietnamese drivers license or international drivers license. Do you know anything about this/have any recommendations for those without either?

The local police will sometimes pull people over outside of Ha Giang city to check to see if they have their IDP. This is supposed to be a safety precaution but often turns into solicited bribes from the cops.

What an amazing article ! And those pictures, wow ? We’re doing the loop in a few days, and hopping for a sunny weather like you had. Thanks for all the info

Hi ! Just wanted to have some more infos regarding the bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang. Where did you took it (which bus station)? Was it a direct bus? Everywhere in town, they are asking for 350k dongs per person… Cheers!

You need to go to B?n xe M? ?ình bus station. I’m not sure what the current rates are or if the bus is direct or not but the ride should take around 7 hours. Most of the buses leave before midday but there a couple of early-afternoon and overnight options.

Hope that helps. 🙂

Ha Giang Loop Vietnam: Ultimate Guide 2024

' src=

Are you interested in doing the Ha Giang Loop?

You’ve come to the right article as I’ve backpacked Vietnam and completed the Ha Giang Loop.

The Ha Giang Loop has become more and more popular in recent years, particularly among those backpacking in Vietnam.

It offers some of the most scenic views in all of Southeast Asia and creates memories to last a lifetime. The Ha Giang Loop is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

But there are lots of questions to be answered before setting out on the trip.

As a full-time traveller, with a lot of my blog content focusing on Vietnam, I have created this complete guide with everything you need to know about the Ha Giang Loop .

So let’s get right into it.

This article contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase using one of these links, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps me to keep my site up and running! Read my disclaimer for more information.

What is the Ha Giang Loop?

The Ha Giang Loop is a common road route in the very north of Vietnam , close to the Chinese border. It’s rapidly grown in popularity recently and is now considered by many a “must-do” in Vietnam.

Its name comes from the province the loop explores, Hà Giang, which is also the name of one of Vietnam’s northernmost cities and a key stop on the route. And the word “loop” describes the shape of the route, it’s almost a circular route.

The roads are so unique as they wind from side to side in a way that’s so extreme, it seems made up. But that’s part of the fun.

Ha Giang Loop’s biggest selling point is the views. Along the loop, you will get some incredible and breathtaking views of the mountainous north. With rice fields, green mountains, canyons and even some lakes and rivers making up most of the views.

And there are lots of stopping points where you can get authentic cultural experiences unlike those you may get in the more touristy parts of Vietnam.

A picture of a road along the Ha Giang Loop.

Where is the Ha Giang Loop?

The Ha Giang Loop is in the north of Vietnam, pretty much as far north as you can get. It’s in the province of Ha Giang – hence the name – and is less than 100km away from the border with China.

If you aren’t familiar with Vietnam’s geography, the south of Vietnam is very much beaches and islands, whereas the north is more mountainous and filled with jungles.

When driving the Ha Giang Loop, you will be driving through the best mountain ranges north Vietnam has to offer , it’s truly an out-of-this-world experience.

Getting from Hanoi to Ha Giang takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, which is most likely where you would come from. There are lots of options and like most of the time in Southeast Asia, you can get buses there for pennies. That’s one of the reasons the Ha Giang Loop is so popular amongst those backpacking Southeast Asia .

How to do the Ha Giang Loop

There are a few options when it comes to doing the Ha Giang Loop. The two main options are to either go as part of a tour or do it yourself.

Most people who choose to do the loop themself will rent a moped or a bike and set off on their own itinerary. The rental companies are quite relaxed in Vietnam when it comes to checking licensing and insurance so many people risk riding a bike with no prior experience or insurance, resulting in many accidents and huge hospital bills.

But riding a bike is the best way to do the route, so it’s up to you if you want to risk it or not. What I will say is that if the police stop you and check your documents – or lack of documents – you will be made to pay a fine, and most of the time the price is at their discretion. But once you have paid the fine once, you don’t have to pay it again…

A picture of a motorbike on the side of a road with a stunning mountain view in the background.

Other people choose to go as part of a tour. There are usually 3 main tour options. Firstly, ride your own bike. The same conditions apply as above. Secondly, sit on the back of a bike of someone who actually knows how to ride one and has a license. Or you can do the loop in a car or minibus kind of vehicle.

In my opinion, it’s always best to do it on a bike. It’s a more complete experience as you feel the wind in your face and get to be fully immersed in the mountains and nature. So if you don’t want to ride yourself, hop on the back with someone. It’s so much better than being inside a vehicle.

How much does the Ha Giang Loop Cost?

If you choose to take a tour of the Ha Giang Loop, you can expect it to cost about 4 million VND (£135 / €155 / $170) . You can book a tour online if you want to be prepared and guarantee your tour, but it’s cheaper to book a tour in person in Hanoi or anywhere else in the northern part of Vietnam.

Doing the tour yourself, the price gets a bit more confusing, but it does work out cheaper. You can rent a bike for less than 200,000 VND a day , which is only £7 / €8 / $9, crazy cheap!

In terms of fuel, around 50,000 dong each day would be enough. Again, you can see how cheap it is.

For food and accommodation, it depends on how you like to eat and sleep. If you are doing Vietnam on a shoestring budget , you can get by on 300,00 VND a day. If you have a larger budget, well the sky’s the limit but I’d be impressed if you spent more than 1 million VND daily.

An aerial view of a town along the Ha Giang Loop.

The actual loop itself and most of the key stops are completely free, the viewpoints, etc. But some do charge an entry fee. It’s never more than 90,000 dong though, so it’s not too much in the grand scheme of things.

If you choose to do the tour yourself, budget at least 700,000 VND daily just to be safe. In other currencies, that’s £24 / €27 / $30 so it’s really not that expensive at all. It’s most likely cheaper than living at home. Imagine getting to experience something as incredible as the Ha Giang Loop for less than living in your house costs!

How long does the Ha Giang Loop Take?

Most people will spend 3-4 days doing the Ha Giang Loop. The total distance of the driving route is in and around 350 kilometres. So it’s up to you how long you want to spend driving it.

Some people will only take 2 days but in my opinion, this isn’t enough. You don’t want to rush through the route and drive all day, not stopping to take in the stunning landscapes, or spending an hour here and there in villages you drive through to speak to locals and get a feel for the Vietnamese culture.

Spending 4 days is the perfect amount of time . It allows you to take the route at a leisurely pace, driving for around 85 kilometres each day, meaning you have plenty of time to stop at viewpoints, attractions, and any other places you wish to spend some time.

The loop isn’t a race, it’s an experience. And there’s no point rushing and missing the opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Things to pack for the Ha Giang Loop

Since you’re setting off on a 3 or 4 day adventure, you need to make sure you have everything that you’ll need packed. You don’t want to find yourself needing something in the middle of nowhere. Don’t worry though- most villages do have places for you to buy some things if you forget the likes of a water bottle or something that would be common in shops.

It’s also worth noting that if you take a tour, you can leave the brunt of your luggage with things you don’t need for the tour at the company’s base. If you are doing the loop yourself, either find somewhere in Hanoi to leave it like a hostel, or you’re going to have to bring it with you.

To help you prepare, here’s a short packing list with everything you need to take on the Ha Giang Loop:

  • Comfortable clothes: You’re going to be doing a lot of riding and exploring, so make sure you are comfortable. If you are riding a bike with no prior experience, you’ll probably not want to wear shorts…
  • Clothes for all conditions: Although snow in Vietnam is very rare, if it occurs, it’s in the mountains in the north where the loop is. It can also get very misty, rainy and cold in northern Vietnam.
  • Good shoes: I f you are riding a bike you need proper footwear, flip-flops aren’t appropriate. You’ll also want to have something decent on your feet if you are hiking to a viewpoint or exploring a cave.
  • A coat: As you can see from the picture below, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. It can get pretty chilly and misty in the mountains, and it rains a bit too.
  • Headtorch: Small villages won’t have street lights so if you are out at night, you need a way to see where you are going. They also come in handy for exploring caves.
  • Phone/Camera/GoPro: It would be a sin to drive the Ha Giang Loop and not take any photos or videos. It’s one of the most picturesque regions of the world, so be sure to capture it in any way you can.
  • Hat/scarf / bandana: Or anything else to protect your face and neck from the wind and bugs that come flying at you while you are going 30 km/hr along windy jungle roads.
  • Normal essentials: Anything else you would pack if you are going away for a few days. Toiletries, a towel, change of clothes, chargers, portable charging packs, etc.

Ha Giang Loop: Top Tips

Although it’s a wonderful trip, the Ha Giang Loop can have its bumps and challenges. But that’s what makes experiences like this worth it, right? Nonetheless, here are some top tips for completing the loop to help make your trip go as smoothly as possible.

✅ You need a Ha Giang Permit: To be able to ride past Ha Giang (the city) and particularly the parts of the loop near the Chinese border, you need a Ha Giang Permit. It’s included as part of a tour, or if you are renting a bike, simply ask the rental company if they can sort one for you. Or you can head to the Ha Giang Immigration Office and get one for yourself. They cost around 230,000 VND.

✅ Download offline maps: The mobile data in the mountainous regions of north Vietnam is very hit or miss. In some areas, you will lose connection completely, even if you have a Vietnamese SIM card. To help overcome this and avoid getting lost, download Ha Giang’s maps on Google Maps or maps.me so you can use the maps even with no signal.

✅ Have Google translate: As you are venturing out of the most touristy areas, English isn’t spoken as widely as it is in Hanoi or HCMC, so you’ll need a way to community with locals, particularly in small towns and villages. Again, make sure to download Vietnamese so you can use it offline. Be sure to learn some basics too though, like hello, thank you or goodbye in Vietnamese .

✅ The roads aren’t easy: Just a heads up, the roads aren’t the easiest to drive on. The quality of roads is less than desirable, and the windy bends make them pretty difficult, even for experienced riders. Not to mention the sheer drops on either side of some narrow roads with no barriers. Food for thought if you are debating whether to hire a bike for yourself.

✅ Get fuel when you have 25-30km left in the tank: The petrol or gas stations are approximately 25-30 kilometres apart from each other, so if you pass one and your fuel odometer is around the same, make sure to stop and top up. As I said earlier, the fuel is really cheap.

✅ Take photos of your bike: If you are renting a bike from a rental company, take photos of every angle of the bike before you leave their property. Many rental companies will accuse you of damaging the bike and try to get you to pay for repairs that you didn’t even cause. Taking photos avoids any possibility of dispute.

✅ Get an international driver’s license: Even if you have a driving license to ride a bike in your home country, it may not permit you to ride one in Vietnam. Check if you can get an international driving license. They’re usually pretty cheap and mean you are fully permitted to ride a bike in Vietnam (according to the law- not according to rental companies haha)

✅ Check the fine print of your insurance: If you are insured to ride a bike in your home country, you are probably covered to ride in other countries, but make sure to check. And also check the details on what cc of bike you can ride. Most allow you up to 125cc but often the bikes in Vietnam are higher than this, so see if you can get a bike within your allowance.

Ha Giang Loop Checklist

If you want a simple checklist of places to stop, here are the widely considered must-see locations. Of course, while you are driving, you are going to stop spontaneously for a beautiful view here and there, or in a random village you come across. But for simplicity’s sake, here are the must-stop places along the Ha Giang Loop.

  • Bac Sum Pass
  • Heaven’s Gate (Quan Ba Pass)
  • Lung Khuy Cave
  • Sung La Valleys
  • Lũng Cú Flag Tower
  • Ma Pi Leng Pass
  • Nho Que River

Ha Giang Loop Itinerary

Doing the Ha Giang Loop without a guide requires a strong itinerary. It needs to be realistic, with enough time to get from A to B, and enough time factored in for spontaneous stops along the way. To help you out, I have created the perfect 4-day Ha Giang Loop Itinerary which you can follow yourself for the ideal trip.

Note: You will of course stop at more places than this- this is just a rough guide. Also, when navigating the route, simply put the name of the destination into Maps and follow it except for the Passes. They are just routes and you will naturally go that way.

Day 1: Ha Giang to Yen Minh

Your first day on the Ha Giang Loop will probably feature the most stops for 2 reasons: Firstly, it has the most stops and secondly, the novelty of the experience will be new and you will want to stop all the time for photos and to admire the view.

Wake up: Ha Giang

The Ha Giang Loop begins and ends in Ha Giang, the city and the capital of the Ha Giang region in Vietnam. There are lots of places where you can rent bikes in Ha Giang so you will have no problems with that. Generally, you can explore Ha Giang the day before or the day after doing the loop, as you do not want to waste time on the first day exploring the city itself.

Destination 1: Bac Sum Pass

The Bac Sum Pas is the first major mountain pass (fancy word for a road that goes up a mountain) which you will encounter on the Ha Giang Loop. It offers the iconic winding roads from side to side and beautiful views too. If you haven’t already said it, the Bac Sum Pass will make you say “Wow”. It’s so scenic.

Destination 2: Tam Son

Tam Son is a small village along the Ha Giang Loop and it’s another must-stop. The main selling point about Tam Son isn’t the town itself – but don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely – it’s the hills that really make Tam Son a must-stop. There are two hills right beside each other (and lots of others around them) and they are nicknamed the “Twin Hills” or “Fairy Hills”, two very appropriate names. The view is magical!

A picture of thw Twin Hills.

Destination 3: Lung Khuy Cave

It’s up to you whether you want to visit Lung Khuy Cave or not. It costs only $2 to enter and allows an insight into a completely different world – underground. It’s fascinating to explore and it’s more than worth stopping. That being said, many people may choose to skip it if they have visited caves elsewhere. It’s a bit out of the way, and there’s a 20-minute walk from the car park to the caves. But if you have the time, it’s definitely worth doing!

Destination 4: Heaven’s Gate

Quan Ba Pass, nicknamed “Heaven’s Gate”, is the next major mountain pass on the route. And the name is more than deserved . The views are heavenly- it really is like you are exploring somewhere out of this world, it’s indescribable. There are lots of places to stop along this part of the loop, and it’s such a common stop that there are tons of cafes to choose from with views worthy of a postcard.

A panoramic view from Heaven's Gate.

Destination 5: Quan Ba

After riding along the Quan Ba Pass, you will reach Quan Ba itself which is a beautiful area. There are lots of towns and villages to explore and stop in. You might even make friends with a local. One of the things I love the most about the Ha Giang Loop is that most people in this region of Vietnam don’t speak great English, yet you can still feel welcomed and accepted by locals and communicate in ways that don’t require speaking. It’s magical.

Some people choose to spend the first night in Quan Ba , others choose to push on to Yen Minh so it’s down to personal preference where you want to stop. I would decide in future though, as accommodation often books out in advance as there aren’t many options. This is especially the case in peak season.

Sleep: Yen Minh

End your final day by settling in Yen Minh, which is a pretty quiet part of the route but it makes for a great place to stay. There are lots of really nice homestay options and you can get a real feel for life in Vietnam as you spend the night in a local’s home. But make sure to be up and bright ready for another day on the beautiful Ha Giang Loop.

Day 2: Yen Minh to Dong Van

Wake up: yen minh.

As I said, make sure to get up bright and early. If you feel up to it, if you can wake up and watch the sunrise , it’s incredible- this applies to sunrises and sunsets anywhere along the Ha Giang Loop. The region is so scenic that no matter where you are, the sunrises and sunsets feel magical.

Destination 1: Sung La Valleys

The first destination on day 2 is Sung La Valleys which is probably one of the few hidden gems I have included on this list. It’s a little bit out of the way and the road conditions aren’t particularly great since it is, quite literally, off the beaten track. But it’s more than worth it. No matter which direction you look, the views are breathtaking and there’s no better place for your first stop of the day.

Destination 2: Lung Cu Flag Tower

Next up is another big detour but an absolute must when doing the Ha Giang Loop, the Lung Cu Flag Tower is located on the Vietnam-China border and offers panoramic views in all directions, into both China and Vietnam . It’s the northernmost point in Vietnam and the flag tower is an iconic landmark too, which you can actually go up and get even better views. It’s not up for debate, it’s a must-do.

A picture of the Lung Cu Flag Tower.

Sleep: Dong Van

Since the stops on day 2 are pretty out of the way and pretty far apart, it’s a day with more driving than stops – but of course, stop as and when you see fit – and you end the day by making your way towards Dong Van. On the way to Dong Van, there are lots of opportunities to stop and sit on rocks overlooking gorgeous valleys with the most Instagrammable of views you could ever imagine. In Dong Van, there are lots of homestay and hostel options to choose from.

Day 3: Dong Van to Meo Vac

Wake up: dong van.

There’s actually quite a lot to see and do in Dong Van in the mornings, especially at the weekend. The market in Dong Van is spectacular and it’s a really cool experience to walk around yourself, or simply people-watch. You can also pick up some tasty breakfast before setting off for the day.

A picture of some people selling pigs in the market in Dong Van.

Destination 1: Ma Pi Leng Pass

The whole of the Ha Giang Loop, as you know by now, is incredibly picturesque. Beautiful. But the part that is often considered to have the best views is the Ma Pi Leng Pass. The river combined with the mountains is hard to beat. It’s also hard to let photos do it justice, so I won’t include one. You can use your imagination or wait in excitement to complete the loop yourself. But I will say it’s the epitome of the loop. It doesn’t get any better than this, simply, wow.

Destination 2: Tu San Canyon / Nho Que River

And speaking of the river, there are loads of opportunities to stop and get a better look at it. It’s quite popular for paddle boarding and canoeing . The Tu San Canyon offers the perfect place to stop and get down close to the river. You can choose to do a boat tour or something, it does cost money of course, but trust me, it’s worth it. It will be one of the best experiences you will get from completing the loop.

A picture taken in the middle of the Nho Que River, a key stop on the Ha Giang Loop.

Sleep: Meo Vac

Spend your final night in Meo Vac, a bustling part of Ha Giang. There’s a lot going on despite being so small, and there are lots of places where you can find a homestay to spend the night. If you arrive early enough, there are also plenty of places where yo u can watch a mesmerising sunset.

Day 4: Meo Vac to Ha Giang

Wake up: meo vac.

The market here is arguably even better than that in Dong Van. But if you can, try to go to at least one of them. Sure, you can go to markets elsewhere in Vietnam and get a similar experience, but few come close to these 2. They are a whole new experience. They’re hectic! But so worth visiting. But make sure you wake up early enough so you don’t spend too much of the day in Meo Vac- it’s your last day so you’ll want to ride as much as possible.

Destination 1: Du Gia

There are lots of places to stop between Meo Vac and Du Gia but there’s not a particular place that is a “must-stop”, but there are villages and viewpoints which you can stop at along the way. Nonetheless, Du Gia is often considered the final stop in the Ha Giang Loop, or the first stop – it’s worth saying you can do the loop in either direction.

You will find a lot of travellers in Du Gia, and most will be doing the route. It’s a nice place to stop and have a meal before heading to Ha Giang to finish it off. The drive between the two is quite long, but it’s, as you might guess by now, stunning. So make sure to take it in and admire the views as it will be your final stretch of road before finishing the loop.

A picture of a house in Du Gia.

Finish: Ha Giang

And just like that, your Ha Giang Loop journey will be complete. As I said, you may wish to spend a day or two in Ha Giang to firstly recover and secondly, enjoy what it has to offer. It’s a pretty neat place! I can tell you now it will be mixed emotions you will have in Ha Giang. You’ll be sad the loop is over but happy too. It’s hard to explain but you’ll understand.

A picture of a statue in Ha Giang city.

Hopefully, you will have had a good time though. It’s hard not to!

Ha Giang Loop: FAQ

Below are some questions related to the Ha Giang Loop along with my answers.

Absolutely yes! Anyone visiting Vietnam should try and make their way north to do the Ha Giang Loop. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and you get some of the best views in all of Southeast Asia. The Ha Giang Loop is so unique and few things come close to it. Anyone and everyone will love it.

Yes, 100%. It costs next to nothing (approximately $30 a day all in) and provides you with some of the most incredible landscapes and views in all of Vietnam. Not to mention the memories you will make to last a lifetime. The Ha Giang Loop is indescribable and without a doubt worth it.

You can do the Ha Giang Loop by car but it wouldn’t be the same experience as on a bike. Doing the loop on a bike is the best way. It allows you to be fully immersed in the experience, feeling the wind against your face and smelling the freshness of the valleys- experiences you would miss out on a car. But for whatver reason if a car is your only option, then yes, it is possible to do the loop by car. They are public roads.

It varies depending on what part of the route you are on. In some areas, the road conditions aren’t the best and this combined with tight turns and weaving bends means that some drivers will find the loop difficult. If you have ridden a bike before, you will likely find it okay. Just don’t get too confident and start going too fast around the bends.

Ha Giang Loop: Conclusion

And there you have it, a complete guide to the Ha Giang Loop.

I would recommend it to anyone- it’s one of the best things you can do in Vietnam without a doubt.

Remember to enjoy the experience, take lots of photos and stay safe.

You’ll have the time of your life on the Ha Giang Loop . Enjoy! 🙂

Ha Giang Loop - The Ha Giang Loop: Everything you Need to Know Before You Go

The Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam’s Ha Giang Province holds cultural significance due to its ethnic diversity and traditional villages. It’s home to various ethnic minority groups, each with their own language, customs and clothing. Along the loops, you can witness the traditional way of life in villages with ancient architecture and terraced rice fields. The region’s vibrant festivals and emphasis on sustainable tourism and cultural preservation add to its cultural importance.

The history of Ha Giang spans thousands of years. It was inhabited in ancient times and came under Chinese influence during various periods. It later became part of French colonial rule and witnessed the struggle for independence. Following the Vietnam War, the region underwent post-war development, leading to its present-day cultural identity as a region with a rich history, diverse ethnic groups and stunning natural beauty.

Ha Giang Loop - The Ha Giang Loop: Everything you Need to Know Before You Go

When travelling to Ha Giang, you are likely to start from Hanoi . I highly recommend booking a sleeper bus through the hostel that you choose, this means that they organize the pickup from your hotel in Hanoi and they drop you off at the right hostel when you arrive in Ha Giang.

The journey from Hanoi to Ha Giang takes around 6-7 hours so it’s worth buying tickets for the slightly more expensive but comfortable cabin bus. We paid 400,000 Dong per person for the cabin bus (~£13). The bus will stop along the way for a lunch break (if you take a daytime bus). If you take an overnight bus, it’s likely that your bus might have a toilet on board or the driver will stop and turn the lights on to let everyone know it’s a toilet stop.

Before planning to do the Ha Giang loop, I had seen so many TikToks and Instagram videos of people doing the loop with Jasmine Hostel. Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with choosing this hostel, I had seen so many people doing it with them that I wanted to choose a different hostel with a bit less of a party vibe!

I came across Bong Hostel on Google and messaged them via WhatsApp to enquire about prices, dates and whether we should choose self-riding or easy-riding. They were so helpful and responded to my questions quickly. At the time, my partner Brett and I were travelling with our friends Matt and Chan so we all agreed that Bong Hostel looked like a good option.

Bong Hostel organized the bus for us from Hanoi – Ha Giang, we got dropped off right outside the hostel and got shown to our room quickly.

This was actually the first time I had ever stayed in a hostel, so I had nothing to compare it to, but we were shown to our dorm and each had our own bunk bed with a privacy curtain, pillow, duvet, towel, and charging port. The bed was super comfy and the room had great air conditioning so we had a great sleep that night! In the morning you can order breakfast for free in the common area before you start the tour.

The hostel also has storage lockers where you can keep your large backpacks and suitcases while you do the loop. Bear in mind that you must bring your own padlock to secure the locker.

  • Duration : 3 Days, 2 Nights
  • Group size : 9 people
  • Drivers : 5 (4 easy-drivers, 1 spotter)

There were 9 people in our group in total, Brett, Matt, Chan and I all had easy riders and the other 5 people were self-riding. I loved the fact that the groups are small because you get to know everyone really well and make great friends over the course of the trip.

Our easy riders were lovely too, mine was called Thuong and he was especially attentive and offered to take pictures whenever we stopped at a viewpoint. I had complete trust in our easy-riders, Thuong was an experienced driver and I felt totally safe on his bike!

I’m quite sure you will just be in awe for most of your trip to Ha Giang! The scenery is like nothing I’ve seen before, mountain after mountain, turn after turn. There is of course a lot of driving involved so you spend the majority of your time on the bike. However, you stop so many times along the way to have a rest, stretch your legs and admire the stunning views!

There are a few stops where you can climb up some rocks and get some awesome pictures at the top. At many of the stops, there is also the opportunity to buy drinks and snacks.

You will also get to visit local villages and interact with the local children who are so sweet! These interactions were the highlight of my trip.

Ha Giang Loop - The Ha Giang Loop: Everything you Need to Know Before You Go

Depending on the time of year that you go, the road conditions, the locations of the police checks, and the route is open to change. The drivers decide what they want to do depending on the day. For example, on our trip it stated that swimming stops weren’t included, but because it was so hot the drivers took us to a swimming pool on the first day and then to a waterfall on the last day. This was a really welcome inclusion to our trip and made it even more memorable for us!

Depending on which hostel you choose and which kind of vibe you prefer, your evenings could be filled with happy water, dancing and karaoke or they could be more low-key depending on your preference. We were lucky to experience a mix of both!

On our first evening, we arrived at Milk Milk Hostel with loads of other travelers and enjoyed a feast of noodles, rice, meats, vegetables, spring rolls and so much more ! The happy water was flowing (as were the beers) and people quickly got started on the karaoke.

The staff stopped the music at around 10:30 pm and then everyone headed up to bed by 11:30 pm-12 am. We had the best night getting to know the people in our group better and some of us were even a little hungover on day 2!

On the second night, we arrived at a hostel and it was just our group staying there, so we had a bit of a quieter evening. We all enjoyed yet another feast put on by the generous staff at our hostel. There was more happy water passed around to get us in the mood for some karaoke! This was a really nice evening because we all got to chat in a quieter setting and reflect on the journey that we had spent together so far.

For the first 2 days, the roads were in good condition with minimal potholes and bumps. However, on the third and final day, about 30km of road was unpaved gravel/dirt . It was tricky to navigate and the drivers had to be extra cautious as some of the road was on the side of a cliff with a steep drop on the other side.

It’s safe to say my heart was racing in these parts! But luckily, our group was totally fine and they handled the bad road conditions really well.

I was highly impressed with our entire experience with Bong Hostel. The communication we had before arriving there was very clear and helpful and they organized all of our bus transfers for us. The hostel itself is clean, well-run and the staff speak good English so communication is not an issue. The drivers are so sweet and helpful throughout the entire trip and they made it really memorable for us. I loved the fact that we had one party evening and one more relaxing evening, it was the perfect balance.

  • Cost of the trip: £359 for 2 people. This included the bus transfers to and from Hanoi, a one-night stay at Bong Hostel, 3 days and 2 nights Ha Giang Loop tour with easy-riders and all food and happy water included.

I had seen so many different recommendations of what to pack for the loop before I did it and I didn’t know until the day before when I saw the weather forecast what I should actually pack!

I did the loop at the end of May (2023) and it was super hot. This is what I recommend taking with you:

  • Small backpack
  • Underwear (duh!)
  • T-shirt x 2
  • Tank top x 1
  • Universal Adaptor + Phone Charger
  • Power Bank (optional)
  • Lightweight rain coat (optional)
  • Soap + Shampoo
  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste
  • Sunglasses ( check out these hiking sunglasses )
  • Small first aid kit
  • Plastic bag for wet/dirty clothes

Of course, if you are going at a different time of year, the weather could be much cooler or warmer, so make sure to check the weather before you go and try and pack as lightly as possible!

Check out our hiking gear guide .

1. Passports: You don’t need to take your passport with you on the loop. I recommend locking it safely away in your big rucksack that you leave at the hostel. All you need is a picture of your passport on your phone.

2. Bring a padlock so you can secure your belongings in the storage locker.

3. Bring cash with you , as you need to pay for your drinks and any snacks you want to buy.

4. Bring a swimming costume and a towel , even if swimming isn’t included in your tour.

5. Apply sun cream! Cover up when you’re riding. We saw people who were very sunburnt on the first day and it would be uncomfortable to sit on the bike like that afterward.

6. Police checks: If you don’t have an International Driving License and you want to self-ride, some hostels (like Bong Hostel) will still let you ride. They allow you to do this but they cannot guarantee that you won’t be stopped, fined and potentially have the bike confiscated.

When we went, we had a spotter who drove ahead and checked for police stops. We only encountered 1 police stop and those of us on easy-riders passed through first. We then got off the bikes to allow our riders to circle back and pick up those who were self-riding without an IDP so they could be brought through the police check without any issues.

7. Only self-ride if you feel confident: The motorbikes you get to ride are semi-automatic and not everyone in our group had ridden one of these before. They take some getting used to as you have to change gears using your foot. Bong Hostel offers a lesson in the morning before you set off on the first day.

8. Don’t feel bad about getting an easy rider! Getting easy riders was one of the best choices we made! We were all free to enjoy the scenery and be present in the moment rather than focusing on the road. There is no shame in easy riding and it was actually really fun! Brett also thought it was more comfortable than driving yourself.

Stops along the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam

Wrapping up my journey through the Ha Giang loop, it’s evident that the experience is far more than just a motorcycle tour. It’s an immersion into an enchanting world of towering peaks, dramatic passes, and vibrant cultures.

My recommendation to future adventurers is simple : embark on this journey with an open mind and a willingness to adapt to the unexpected. The conditions might be tough, and the itinerary might change, but that’s part of the thrill. Use my packing list as a guideline but also tailor it to your needs and the weather conditions at the time of your trip.

Whether you choose to ride solo or opt for an easy rider, the goal remains the same: to witness the mesmerizing beauty of Ha Giang, immerse in its rich culture, and make unforgettable memories. For us, getting the easy riders was a winning choice, allowing us to soak in the sights without worrying about the road. But, at the end of the day, it’s about what suits your comfort and confidence level.

So, are you ready to strap on your helmet and kickstart your own Ha Giang adventure? Remember, the journey is as rewarding as the destination. Safe travels, fellow globetrotters!

Ha Giang loop is considered as one of the most interesting trips in the northern province of Vietnam. With the Ha Giang loop 1 day, where should we go to discover Ha Giang as much as possible? Check out the suggested itinerary below.

Ha Giang beautiful river

Itinerary for Ha Giang loop 1 day

As usual, all of the travelers would start the Ha Giang loop 1 day from Ha Giang city. Departure time will be from early morning then come back in the morning of the next day. However, from this city, there are many choices for the travelers to explore this beautiful province.

Ha Giang city – Quan Ba Heaven Gate – Yen Minh – Dong Van

This Ha Giang loop 1 day will lead you to the reputed traveling districts such as Yen Minh, Quan Ba, Dong Van.

After taking late night bus to Ha Giang city, you can rent vehicle from Ha Giang motorbike rental service to start the trip in the early morning. So you can eat something in Ha Giang city. The road to Quan Ba Heaven Gate would take you about more than 1 hour driving along Highway 4C.

When you are driving, you can see the romantic sunrise in the pristine natural sky. And on Highway 4C you will go through one of the most breathtaking Ha Giang pass , which is Bac Sum Pass. It would be the most memorable experience when admiring the whole scenery from Quan Ba Heaven Gate, especially the extraordinary beauty of Quan Ba twin mountain.

Ha Giang scenery

The next destination is Yen Minh district. It takes you nearly 2 hours driving with about 60 km. After getting here, you can have lunch and take a break in a homestay. There are many places you can go to in Yen Minh such as Yen Minh pine forest, Tham Ma Slope, Du Gia Ha Giang ,etc.

Ha Giang yen minh

The let’s straight to the last place of the Ha Giang loop 1 day, Dong Van Ha Giang . Dong Van District attracts tourists with its pristine and awe-inspiring beauty. Everyone who comes here feels small in the face of the majestic mountains and forests in this place.

Ha Giang city – Dong Van – Ma Pi Leng – Meo Vac

This suggestion is so amazing with 3 major destinations Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng Pass and Meo Vac.

From Ha Giang city , you should eat something to prepare for the 3 hours of driving to Dong Van. When arriving there, you can take a break to eat in this district. You should try some specialties like thang co, five-color sticky rice, au tau porridge, and dried buffalo meat.

Ha Giang specialties

After having gathered enough energy to go on, pick up your backpacks and head to Ma Pi Leng Pass. This pass is famous for its altitude of over 2000 meters and breathtaking bends, challenging even the most skilled adventurers. From this pass, you can admire the romantic beauty of the Nho Que River .

Ha Giang pass in Dong Van

Just follow the route of Ma Pi Leng Pass, and you will reach Meo Vac . Meo Vac is located in the northern part of Ha Giang province, and it is a purely agricultural region in the mountainous area. When you visit Meo Vac, you will be immediately impressed by the distinctive cultural characteristics of the ethnic minorities living here, especially the H’Mong people.

Meo Vac district

You can experience a cozy evening with local people here. This will help you learn more about their customs. One more thing you can not miss is Meo Vac market or Lung Phin market , which usually takes place on the weekend.

Ha Giang city – Nam Hong Village – Hoang Su Phi – Xin Man

The best time for this itinerary is Ha Giang weather in September . Because Ha Giang steps over the ripe rice season and pleasant weather for traveling.
