When visiting Vietnam, a trip to the stunning Halong bay or Ha Long Bay is absolutely unmissable by all those traveling in Northeast Vietnam and the Hanoi area. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to emerald waters and infinite towering limestone isles, islets, and caves topped by lush rainforests. All aging 20 million years! This is Vietnam’s most popular attraction and it attracts thousands of visitors for a day trip or multiple-day trips from around the world.

For a first-time visitor , it can be a bit confusing if you planning a trip to Ha Long Bay especially since there are an overwhelming number of tours to choose from. We were lucky and visited Halong Bay twice for my past travel experience.

Our first visit to Halong Bay is on a few years back when we backpacked in Vietnam. It was a rush trip as we only find our overnight tour when we landed in Hanoi. As we didn’t do many surveys before our visit, the money we paid was quite expensive although the journey is very memorable and joyful. With this experience, my recent visit to Halong Bay is a day trip cruise with everything well organized. Both trips gave me different experiences but one thing for sure is we have a wonderful time in Halong bay with its breathtaking scenery.

Pre-Trip Essential

As usual, I am planning for a self-DIY Halong bay itinerary . But looking through all the information and resource, I ended up deciding to join the Halong Bay cruise tour. The reason is very straightforward. It is hassle-free and save me tons of traveling time and money.

Here are a few facts and tips when planning a Halong bay itinerary:

We recommended getting to Halong bay by joining a tour. The public transport is not well-connected where you need to transfer and ride a taxi in order to get to the pier. It will be ended with an extremely long traveling time and it cost you even more compared with joining the tour.

A day trip to Ha Long Bay is possible, but in my opinion, it’s best enjoyed on an overnight cruise, either 2 days or 3 days. Despite the long journey to get there, Halong Bay deserves to be explored at a slow pace and get out of the most.

Definitely worth it for the scene! This is a must to do excursion in Vietnam especially when you are visiting the Northern region to Hanoi.

Cruise Tour in Halong Bay

Cruising in Halong Bay is the most popular way to experience this wonder of nature. Being the most popular attraction in Vietnam, this is a fact that there are many local tours available, and all the tours provided you’ll find in the Vietnam travel agencies. You can choose to reserve online, from local or home country travel agencies, and even from the hotel where you stayed in Hanoi.

While getting to Halong bay twice in my experience, my sincere advice and tip are to book your tour from a trustworthy tour company. We booked our Halong Bay Day Cruise from Hanoi through Klook . The tour agency is running the tour many years of experience with great reviews and happy customers. Most important, the fair is good and all the expenses and services are clearly stated.

Alternatively, you can also check out Viator – a TripAdvisor company with those reputation companies I can vouch for!

Next, you might be debating how many days should I spend in Halong bay . Should I get the luxury cruise or just a simple cruise? Well, it is depending on you. In general, a Halong bay trip usually goes for 1, 2, or 3 days. You can choose from a day trip from Hanoi, 2-day or 3-day overnight cruise for a basic tour or luxury tour if you wish. The services is depending on how much you are ready to spend.

We will explain in detail what you should be expecting when booking a tour to Halong bay to help you make up your decision.

Day Trip To Halong Bay

If you are on a tight budget or don’t have a lot of time, my advice for you is to go on a Ha Long Bay day tour instead. It is very totally feasible and easy to take a 1 day Ha Long Bay tour from Hanoi. In fact, this is the most popular day trip from Hanoi with many people are departing to Halong Bay every day.

Halong Bay Travel Guide : Bear in mind that the journey from Hanoi to Halong Bay took up to 3 hours each way which means a total of 6 journeys in total for a return within one day. So basically you merely have around 4 to 5 hours on the cruise if you are doing a day trip.

Halong Bay Overnight Tour

So if you have a little more time, you might want to check my sections below on multiple-day tours! For me, 2 days is fairly enough on a trip to Halong Bay unless you truly want a serene time for an additional day. But it is really up to your decision and interest.

Halong Bay Travel Guide : Beware that some the overnight cruise can offer very cheap prices. But always remember what get what you paid. That cruise is usually dirty and most activities and food are not included. You will need to pay extra to enjoy the activities and meals that are usually more expensive. So it might end up you are feeling getting scammed. We truly advise you understand what is included in the package to avoid an unhappy journey.

Things To Do in Halong Bay

There are many activities to do in Halong Bay that are offered as part of Ha Long Bay Cruises selected. Some tours offer many stops and keep you moving the whole trip whereas others allow you to rest and take in the views. Let’s take a look at what to do when you are visiting Ha Long Bay.

Cruising through the serene Ha Long Bay is definitely a must-do. There are well over 1,600 islands and islets, which offer spectacular seascape views of limestone mountains surrounded by emerald green water.

Swimming – We swam in the water in Halong Bay on my trip a few years back. That is truly a fun time that I still remember now. Unfortunately, this is not somewhere you’ll want to swim as there is quite a bit of garbage in the water. So we ended up giving up this option my the recent trip. Maybe this is a better option if you are doing the overnight cruise when you will cruise into a deeper area.

Don’t forget your swimwear if you planning to get into the water. It’s very easy to get changed on the tour boats.

Kayaking in Halong Bay

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can choose kayaking. This is one excursion you will never regret! Please note that your things can get wet, or you may lose your items in the water.

Some of the tours will be stated that kayaking is included as part of the activities, else you might need to pay extra if you want to have this activity.

Cave Visiting in Halong Bay

Caving visit is one of the popular activities usually included on the excursion tour. The steps aren’t as challenging as they appear and there are stages where you can rest and catch your breath. You can climb to the top of the mountain and enjoy the splendid view.

Truly a must-do for your Halong Bay visit. Take note that a cave visit is not permitted due to the weather condition and high tide.

My Trip To Halong Bay

My day trip to Halong bay was a surreal experience. Our journey started in the early morning when the tour was organized to pick up us from the Hanoi hotel with a tour bus. It is a weekday but there are half full for the minibus with approximately 12 people together with us. The journey took us about 3 and half hours before we joined the others and boarded the cruise ship.

A cruise through gigantic limestone karsts was like a dreamy escape. The cruises include several activities, such as kayaking, cave visits, and the opportunity to climb to the peak of Titop Island for breathtaking views and photo opportunities.

During the cruise, we were taken through the most beautiful Bay spots to enjoy the beautiful view. The cruise was soothing. We also stopped on the bay for kayaking and a cave visit to explore the limestone karsts.

For the food, they offered a Vietnamese lunch and afternoon tea which are included in the package. It was very delicious and filling with variety of choices. We have a very satisfying lunch and it’s also the best time to meet new friends from other countries too! Our guide can speak very good English and he is very accommodating and approachable.

A day cruise is too rushed as the day cruise will try to pack your time with tons of activities. We enjoyed the time on the sundeck, soaking up the atmosphere, and the sunset. The bay during the sunset is extremely beautiful. Probably that is the reason you might think of an overnight cruise in Halong Bay.

Handy Halong Bay Travel Guide Tips

It’s honestly a must-visit in Vietnam even though it is touristy and it can get crowded. Again, the best way to explore Ha Long Bay is on a cruise. I wholeheartedly recommend doing thorough research before booking yours. Make sure to read reviews because there are really a lot of bad tour companies.

Prepare in advance with the change of clothes and swimwear for swimming. Sunblock, waterproof bags, and something to secure your phones if you planning for kayaking. Lastly, bring a good sneaker if you are joining the cave visit and hiking activities along the cruise journey.

As we visited that beautiful place a couple of months ago, let us share our experience of doing Halong Bay in 2 days and practical things we learned on the way.

How to get to Halong Bay from Hanoi

Most travelers do the Halong Bay itinerary from Hanoi as it is quite close and stays in Cat Ba island. Actually, there are 2 ways to get there:

Combined ticket (includes bus and fast boat – more expensive)

In Hanoi, you will find many agencies that sell combined tickets to get to Halong Bay. The ticket includes the journey on the bus and a fast boat to get to your stay in Halong Bay. This option is usually expensive because of the fast boat. However, it is suitable if you are planing Halong Bay for 2 days.

Separate tickets for the bus and public ferry (cheapest option)

This is for sure the backpackers’ option for the Halong Bay itinerary. You can check the most recent transport options here . For the best synchronization, check the ferry schedule before booking your bus ticket.

Regardless of which option you choose, the bus ride is about 2 to 3 hours to the bay. There you either find the fast boat waiting for you. Or you have to walk to the public ferry dock. Plan at least 20 minutes walking as the public ferry is quite far from the bus stop.

Best time to visit Halong Bay

The bay is one of the famous attractions in Vietnam. So you should expect it to be crowded with tourists and cruises. As I am still a fan of the so-called shoulder season, we visited Halong Bay in February. It is good timing as most of Northern Vietnam is still relatively cold during that time, and high seasons haven’t started yet.

While planing your Halong Bay itinerary, keep in mind that the high season in Northern Vietnam is between May and November.

Halong Bay itinerary: where to stay

Halong Bay is quite a large region and one of the best places to visit in Vietnam . Actually, you can find many hotels on the islands. Depending on how far the island is, it varies the night price. We recommend staying on Cat Ba island, as most ferries go to it and also there are a lot of other activities to do there.

We stayed at Cat Ba Ong Cottages, a separate island 20 minutes away from Cat Ba. To be honest, we really enjoyed this hotel as it is cheap, calm and wonderful. It also provides free pickup service from this place. Get in touch with them for more organization.

Halong Bay itinerary: is the cruise worth it?

Many tourists and travelers get tempted by the idea of spending a night on a cruise in Halong Bay . Actually, you can find many convenient cruise offers in Hanoi for Halong Bay in 2 days at a reasonable price.

The bay is famous around the world, and it is one of the main attractions in Vietnam. A cruise experience in Halong Bay could be worth it when you choose the right to do it to avoid the crowds.

Alternatively, you could also spend a nightlight on a calm island with the same view and make a day trip in Halong Bay.

How to organize your day trip to Halong Bay

The first piece of advice to consider when visiting this one of Vietnam landmarks : never book your day trip to Halong Bay with your hotels. They always offer over-priced tours because they also get commissions from each customer.

In Cat Ba center, you will find many small agencies around providing basically the same itinerary. That’s why you should ask several ones and compare the prices.

The tours take almost the whole day, and it is also planned with several stops. Good to know as well that lunch included. This should be your main plan for Halong Bay for 2 days.

Ha Long Bay Itinerary 2024: Gems Amidst Emerald Seas

Halong Bay Blog: One early morning, we raced after a local bus from Bac Ninh to Vietnam’s Capital, Hanoi . We had booked our Halong Bay trip and the infamous Hanoi Opera House was our pickup point.

I still vividly remember dozens of day tour vans calling out their booked travelers for the day at the Opera House to different day trips from Hanoi. Trang An and Halong Bay (or Vinh Ha Long) were the popular ones.

We hopped on our minivan and awaited the adventure. FYI I hadn’t a clue of what Halong Bay was. I only knew it was ‘nice’. So here goes my Ha Long Bay itinerary.

Ha Long Bay Itinerary

For the Ha Long Bay Itinerary, the most commonly picked itineraries are for 1-day and 2-day-1-night trips. But others prefer staying longer to explore the fishing villages.

The deal is that Halong Bay has 1600 islands, most of which are limestones. As you cruise through the never-ending green blobs, there’s little to do here apart from the few treks, beaches, and cave exploration.

Unless of course, you wish to sit down and examine the entire ecosystem by yourself. Nevertheless, I visited Ha Long Bay for a 1-day trip and regretted not planning a longer itinerary.

Also, keep in mind that Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay aren’t very different. Lan Ha Bay is relatively a smaller area with more flora on peaks and fewer crowds. But Ha Long Bay is the most popular here.

If you’re particular about Lan Ha Bay, pick some tours specific to Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island.

Ha Long Bay Itinerary 1 Day Guide

I visited Halong Bay with a 1 day tour and I loved it! Consider this my Halong Bay blog for 1 day. There were a few more places that we couldn’t quite cover, but the one day isn’t a bad idea for budget travelers.

For Ha Long Bay 1 day trip, I recommend picking Route 2 to explore the better parts. However, I’ve included attractions of both routes in this 1-day itinerary so that it helps you decide better.

I handpicked this Ha Long Bay tour below- it begins at a decent rate and you get to choose different cruises, routes, and even the length of your itinerary. The second itinerary is for those who wish for a private tour. Grab your deals today!

Arrive at pickup point at 7:30 – 8:00 am .

Pick your nearest pickup location. Luxury tours pick you up straight from the hotel but make sure to be on time. We, on the other hand, ran our asses off from Bac Ninh to catch a local bus to make it on time to the Hanoi Opera House. Gladly, we were just in time.

Some common pickup points are Hanoi Opera House, Old Quarters, and Hoan Kiem Lake.

Board the Cruise at Tuan Chau Marina Port

From Hanoi, after the two-hour shuttle bus ride to Tuan Chau Marina Port, the agency will typically take care of the cruise arrangement. The cruise itself is a short journey – have a seafood lunch on the boat before reaching Halong Bay (food is included in the package).

Explore the Thien Cung and Sung Sot Caves

Available on Route 1 & 2. Both caves are to be the first stop at Ha Long Bay. Some operators take you to both caves – we did too. While the caves are photogenic, they’re honestly similar to each other. So don’t mind covering only one.

Catch sight of Hon Dinh Huong and Fighting Cock Islet

Route 1 only : These are small islets you can’t land on. The cruise takes you around it for pictures. The Hon Dinh Huong is famous as its image is printed on the Vietnamese VND 200,000 note.

Fighting cock is a similar islet where two tiny islets appear very much like two chickens fighting.

Hike the Ti Top (Titov) Island

Route 2 only : With the steps, we began climbing thinking it was easy. Well, it was easy except the hike to the top is 450 steep steps! After all that cave walk and accompanied heat, this gets tiring.

But the peak of Ti Top Island is worth all the effort!

Kayak at Hang Luon Caves

Kayaking is on Route 1 & 2 . But I’m only certain you get to kayak at Luon Caves on Route 2. Kayak under the arched Luon Cave to an open sky area amidst the peaks! Other spots to kayak are Bai Tu Long Bay, Cong Do, and Cong Dam.

This is the last activity at Halong Bay for a 1-day trip. Get ready to sunbathe your way back on the cruise to the port and back to Hanoi.

Ha Long Bay itinerary for 2 Days

The Ha Long Bay itinerary for 2 days is the most popular tour. While the 1-day trip covers most, it’s very hurried. The 2 Days 1-night itinerary lets you seep in the experiences.

Added to it, you have the privilege of visiting attractions on a less touristy schedule. Some cruises let you Kayak in solitude at sunrise! But my favorite on this itinerary is squid-fishing!

As day one’s schedule is similar to the 1-day Ha Long Bay itinerary, I’ve skipped its descriptions below.

Here’s a quick list of Ha Long Bay Itinerary for 2 Days from Hanoi:

• Day 1: Arrive at pickup point 7:30 – 8:00 am
• Board at Tuan Chau Port and Have a Seafood Lunch
• Walk the Sung Sot Caves
• Sight the Hon Dinh Huong Islets
• Hike Ti Top Island
• Go squid fishing : This is only possible with the 2-day itinerary as it’s an evening activity. You get to hold light out the waters from your cruise and wait till squids take the bait! Ha Long Bay is known for fishing among local fishermen!
• Karaoke or take a cooking class! These are additional privileges of a 2-day tour. Some host cooking classes, and you can vibe to music on the evening sun deck or karaoke. Some rare ones even have martial arts training!
• Day 2 : Go for kayaking at sunrise (at Luon Caves)
• Tour the Lang Chai Tra Bau : (new route only) The Tra Bau area is a fishing village. This is a guided tour around the spot of peaks where the Kong Skull movie was shot.
• Have another brunch . This gets to the end of this itinerary. After your long kayak and Tra Bau tour, head back to Tuan Chau Airport as you have brunch.

Ha Long Bay Itinerary for 3 Days

3 Days is best for those looking for luxury cruises. In my opinion, there isn’t more to explore. Of course, there are more limestone islets you’ll traverse by, but nothing new of sorts.

As not many people choose these tours and they’re pricey – the tour itineraries vary a lot from one another. Some are simply luxurious hotels with incredible views. To get the most out of the 3-day itinerary, scroll to my recommended Klook tour below.

But for those simply looking for a plush relaxation by Ha Long Bay, I highly recommend the Orchid Cruise . They offer relaxed slow sailing with luxurious facilities and rooms with private balconies.

Some additional places to visit on the Ha Long Bay 3 Days itinerary are Ba Hang floating villages, and Frog and Chopstick Islands (according to one of the popular 3-day itineraries).

Anyway, here’s an example of a Halong Bay itinerary for 3 days:

• Day 1 : Get to the Tuan Chau International Marina and begin with lunch (as usual)
• Cruise by Swan, Dog Head, and floating villages (Ba Hang floating village)
• Check out the thumb island – yes, it DOES look like a thumb.
• Walk the Luon Caves and Ti Top Island
• Go Squidfishing!
• Day 2 : Again begin with swimming and kayaking (Frog Island and Chopstick Island)
• Visit the Halong Bay Pearl Museum
• Laze around the beach
• Day 3 : Visit the Sung Sot Cave
• Last cruise around the Fighting cock islets and Incense Burner Island
• Have lunch and back to Hanoi.

To summarize, the caves and Ti Top Island are the most popular. Kayaking, swimming, and beaches are the next most popular things to do. Floating villages and the additional cruise for viewing different islets are for additional days.

Halong Bay is worth visiting! When in Hanoi, I recommend taking at least one day to visit Halong (or Ha Long in Vietnamese) Bay.

It’s even better when you haven’t an idea of the place and simply hit the road! For this article’s sake, it isn’t only nature – Ha Long Bay is a unique experience that’s impossible to find elsewhere. Among the list of Phu Quoc Island and Cat Ba Island, this is one of Vietnam’s must-see.

The limestone peaks amidst hypnotic green seas and the fact that you’ll cruise through these is no less of a paradise.

How Many Days to Spend in Halong Bay?

How long in Ha Long Bay? Hmm, this isn’t easy to answer. With Halong Bay so popular in the world today, travelers pick every itinerary option available on the cruises.

Some take a 4-day 3-night cruise and many even take the 1-day trip option. But the most popular option in terms of budget (and time) is taking the 2-day 1-night cruise in Ha Long Bay.

A Halong Bay 1 day trip is sufficient to check out what the hype is all about. 1 Day trip is even enough to get around the main attractions of Halong Bay. But you’ll also realize you should have stayed longer.

I recommend the 2 days for Ha Long Bay as you’ll get to see the more offbeat parts of Halong Bay. Anything longer can also get boring to some.

How to Get to Halong Bay?

The best way to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi is via package tours that take care of transport. It’s cheap as they cover the shuttle bus ride and the cruise trip costs till Halong Bay.

Halong Bay is 172 km from Hanoi and takes 2.5 to 3 hours to get there through the New Highway 5B, Hai Phong City. These shuttle buses pick up travelers from spots like Hanoi Old Quarters and the Opera House.

As taxis get expensive, the shuttle bus is a budget-friendly option. They cost 350,000 VND – 560,000 VND (USD 15 – USD 23) depending on the comfort of the shuttle bus. The fare gets higher for private charters.

Rented bikes are an alternative if you don’t mind the heat. Another wild option (for the rich) is taking a 45-minute seaplane from Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport to Tuan Chau Island Marina. Yes .

Is Halong Bay one of the seven wonders of the World?

This came across when I was researching for this post – I thought it to be funny to add. There’s a lot of criticism in this list but Halong Bay, in the end, did make it. Read more on Wikipedia .

Though not on the same 7 Wonders of the World as the Taj Mahal, Halong Bay was voted in the new 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011. 200-plus countries were participating in this!

The evolution of Karst in this bay is said to have evolved over 20 million years. The limestone in these little islands is said to have taken 500 million years.

A whole biodiversity is in place today and thus, apart from all the tourism trends, there is so much more to Ha Long Bay than just having a drink with a view from your cruise. I’d say it has every reason to be on the 7 Nature Wonders of the World.

Halong Bay Travel Guide [Ha Long Bay]

As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow on the surreal landscape, Halong Bay reveals itself as a place of enchantment, where dreams merge with reality and the beauty of the natural world takes center stage.

Located just a little over 100 miles away from the bustling city of Hanoi, Vietnam lies the breathtaking natural wonder of Halong (or Ha Long) Bay. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a picturesque location that is straight out of a fantasy novel. During our two-month journey across Bali , Thailand , Singapore , Cambodia , and Vietnam , we visited some spectacular places, but the three nights we spent on a traditional junk in Halong Bay were one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

Halong Bay, which means “descending dragon,” is situated in the Quang Ninh Province of Northeastern Vietnam. Covering approximately 600 square miles, the bay comprises thousands of limestone karsts and islands of varying shapes and sizes. Many of these islands are hollow and house vast caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

The bay is home to a few fishing villages where approximately 1,600 residents live on floating houses and make their livelihood through fishing and oyster cultivation.

Ways to See Halong Bay (Ha Long Bay)

The best way to see halong bay – by boat.

There are several ways to see Halong Bay – by land, sea or air. The most popular adventure, and our favorite way to experience the culture of the area, is by traditional junk boat. We spent 3 nights cruising through tiny floating villages, watching oyster farmers bring up their treasures, and exploring caves we wouldn’t normally see if we were flying over or driving the coast. 

Traditional Junk Cruise

If you’re cruising through Halong Bay, go with Bhaya Cruises for an unforgettable adventure! My husband, Michael, and I were part of an Emerald Waterways tour in Vietnam, and the highlight was 3 fabulous nights on a Bhaya Cruises junk boat through Halong Bay!

Bhaya is one of the big players in Halong Bay cruises, and let me tell you, their traditional “junk” was anything but junk! It’s like a boutique hotel on water, with cozy cabins for two, offering stunning views. The crew on board are not only professional but also a lot of fun, and the food? Oh, it’s out of this world!

Their wooden junks come with 15-20 classic cabins and 3-7 premium cabins. Prices start around $135 per person, per night, and that covers everything from your comfy cabin and delicious meals (seriously, 7-8 dishes each meal!) to a cooking class, morning tai chi, happy hour, and all your onboard and offboard activities (think kayaking, cave exploring, and visiting fishing villages). The only extras you’ll need to pay for are cocktails and a massage if you fancy one.

On the two-day cruise, you’ll get to explore Trinh Nu Cave and the stunning Sung Sot Cave. But if you opt for the three-day cruise, like we did, you’ll venture further into the Bay, visiting the peaceful Cua Van fishing villages and kayaking at Ho Ba Ham with fewer tourists around. Trust me, it’s worth every penny!

Booking Your Halong Bay Cruise

Booking your cruise in advance is a smart move to secure your spot and maybe even snag a deal or upgrade! It’s like reserving the best seat in a theater for a blockbuster movie—it’s all about the experience! Plus, booking online is super easy and gives you the freedom to compare different packages, prices, and reviews. You’ll find the perfect match for your adventure style and budget.

Since cruises can fill up fast, especially during peak seasons, booking early guarantees you won’t miss out. Imagine the horror of missing a cruise because you didn’t book ahead—it’d be like missing your favorite band’s concert!

Things to Know Before Booking Your Cruise

• The food is always prepared fresh and cooked right on the boat.  If you have any allergies or you’re a vegetarian, let them know this upon booking.
• If you have a sensitive stomach, be careful what you eat. Although they do everything they can to make the food safe, the water in Vietnam is very unsafe for consumption. The vegetables and fruit are washed in this water, and the lettuce, in particular, can hold a lot of bacteria. My suggestion is to forego the salads, and just enjoy the rest of the delicious food.
• You will not have cell service in Halong Bay. Yes, they do offer “free wifi”, but it’s spotty at best. Forget about Facebook and relax… it will still be there when you get off the boat in a day or two.
• Pack lightly. The cabins are a good size for a boat, but they’re still pretty small. If you have more than one piece of luggage, make sure they’re very small pieces.
• Be sure to pack sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, sunglasses, binoculars, hiking boots, and water shoes.
• Bring Vietnamese cash, the Vietnamese Dong, for tips, etc.

Itinerary for Our 3-Day Junk Boat Cruise

Other than onboard activities, such as cooking classes, Tai Chi, and happy hour, you’ll mostly just be cruising to enjoy the incredible scenery. However, there will be a few activities provided by your cruise company, such as kayaking, cave exploration and visits to floating fishing villages. Following is the itinerary we enjoyed with Bhaya.

Visit a Pearl Factory

On our way to board our traditional junk, we made a fascinating pit stop at Legend Pearl, a cultured pearl farm. We got a firsthand look at how pearls are cultivated, from the different types of oysters to the implantation process. It was like stepping into a real-life science class! 💎

Watching them implant the pearl shell piece into the live oysters was like witnessing a tiny treasure being hidden away. It was both educational and eye-opening! Plus, getting to see the different colors and sizes of pearls that can develop was like discovering a rainbow in a shell! 🌈🐚

However, as captivating as it was, I must warn you—it’s a bit of a tourist trap. Many visitors end up leaving with a small fortune’s worth of pearls! 💸 So, if you’re not careful, you might just fall under the spell of these lustrous gems! See the video of them opening the oysters to find a pearl .

Enjoy a Vietnamese Lunch Buffet

Once we set sail through Halong Bay, we were in for a treat—a buffet lunch fit for kings and queens! The spread was a delicious assortment of Vietnamese dishes, all prepared fresh and some right before our eyes. It was like a culinary show on the high seas! 

To wash down all that yummy goodness, we had the choice of local beer or one of their handcrafted cocktails. Talk about a perfect pairing! The combination of flavors, the stunning views, and the gentle rocking of the boat made for an unforgettable dining experience. It was a feast for the senses in every way!

After our delicious lunch, we were faced with a tough decision—soak up the sun on the private beach of Trinh Nu or paddle our way through Trinh Nu via kayak. We chose the latter, thinking we’d be the kings of the bay! Looking back, I might have opted for the beach bum life instead. 🏖️

While kayaking, we discovered the joys of paddling in a restricted area, which, despite the limitation, was still a blast. We couldn’t venture beyond the permitted zone, but hey, we made the most of it!

After freshening up with a hot shower in our cozy cabin, we were ready to hit the deck for happy hour (2 for 1, no less!). 🍹 Armed with cocktails and cameras, we ascended to the top deck, where we were met with jaw-dropping scenery bathed in the most perfect, golden-hour lighting. 

As we snapped away, capturing the beauty of Halong Bay, we also took the opportunity to mingle with our fellow passengers. Who knew that sharing a drink and a sunset could lead to making forever friends?

Cooking Class

After a couple of cocktails to get our creative juices flowing, it was time for the Halong Bay edition of “Master Chef”… with a twist—we were the master chefs! We had the chance to try our hand at making authentic Vietnamese spring rolls and other local dishes.

The ship organized a couple of friendly competitions. First, the ladies took on the challenge of making the best spring rolls. Then, it was the men’s turn… but with a hilarious twist—they could only use one hand! 😄 It was quite the sight to see the guys trying to roll up those spring rolls with just one hand, and let’s just say, there were plenty of laughs all around!

Savor a Delicious Vietnamese Dinner

During our time on the traditional Halong Bay junk, we were treated to some seriously fancy feasting! Each evening, we were presented with a lavish set menu that included six or seven courses—definitely more food than any one person could handle! But, being the adventurous eaters we are, we made it our mission to savor every last bite.

Stargaze on Deck

After filling our bellies, we grabbed some cocktails and headed up to the upper deck for a celestial show like no other—stargazing on Halong Bay! The night sky there is a mesmerizing masterpiece, with its velvety darkness and twinkling stars putting on quite the show. It was the perfect way to end our day of adventure!

Tai Chi or Sleep In

Rise and shine! Day two started with an early morning Tai Chi session on the top deck at 6:30 am. It was the perfect way to kickstart our day, rejuvenating our minds and bodies while soaking in the stunning surroundings of Halong Bay.

Omelets and Mimosas

After a refreshing Tai Chi session, Michael was ready for a hearty breakfast, while I opted for something lighter. We had a delightful selection of croissants and pastries to choose from, and there was even an omelet station for those craving something more substantial. And if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try Vietnamese Pho for breakfast?

Sunbathe and Take Photos on the Sundeck

We took it easy this morning, soaking up the sun on the deck as the stunning scenery of Halong Bay drifted past us. It was the perfect time to capture some Instagram-worthy shots!

Cua Van Floating Village

We hopped on a tender to reach our kayak and set off to explore the Cua Van Floating Culture Center, nestled in the heart of Halong Bay among majestic limestone karsts. The backdrop of limestone mountains and colorful houseboats on the water created an incredible scene.

Travel & Leisure Magazine rates this as one of the world’s most beautiful destinations, and we couldn’t agree more! But it’s not just beautiful; it’s also fascinating. This is the largest fishing village in Halong Bay, with about 180 households and a population of about 733, all living on floating houses and making a living through fishing and pearl farming. Floating around in our rowboat (powered by a strong local woman covered from head to toe to protect her skin from the sun), we got to see firsthand how these people live. It was so interesting! We even saw a couple of fishermen rowing along to collect their catches of the day .

The village has a small cultural center exhibiting artifacts about the floating culture, their fishing, and pearl farming. There’s also a small school in the floating village where our guide, Ha, gave us a basic Vietnamese language lesson, which was quite confusing but fun! The people of the village treated us to a short performance , adding to the charm of this unique place.

Kayak Ho Ba Ham

After indulging in another delicious lunch onboard, we were faced with the tough decision of how to spend our afternoon. We opted for kayaking in the serene and untouched beauty of the Ho Ba Ham area. It’s incredibly peaceful, with only the sound of the waves and birds in the air. As we paddled, we ventured through caves adorned with stalactites in various shapes and sizes, keeping an eye out for the elusive Cat Ba Langur monkeys.

What is a langur ?  It’s an adorable little gold-headed monkey, and the rarest primate in Asia. With only less than 70 of them left in the world, it’s unfortunately close to extinction. Hunting of these cute little guys for medicinal purposes was once common. They were used to make “monkey balm” to help with erectile dysfunction and other issues. These hunters (savages) could earn up to $50 for each one they got, and between 1970 and 1986 over 500 langurs were killed.

The hunters would actually attack people who got in their way. Thankfully, as part of the conservation effort there is a strictly protected sanctuary on the eastern coast of Cat Ba Island. By the end of 2001, no more hunting was occurring and nine langurs were born, so they’re expecting the numbers to increase.

Enjoy a Massage

Before diving into tonight’s happy hour and delicious meal, we had to unwind from our kayaking adventures. The onboard massages were a godsend! They were professional and top-notch, leaving us feeling completely rejuvenated. What’s more, they were offered on a private deck, allowing us to soak in the sights, sounds, and smells of the bay while getting pampered. And the best part? Unlike massages back home, these didn’t cost an arm and a leg!

Squid Fishing

After enjoying our happy hour drinks and snacks, followed by yet another amazing meal, we were in for a treat: squid fishing! Weather permitting, this activity is a blast to do with your new cruise buddies. We were provided with all the gear we needed, including fishing poles and nets. While we didn’t manage to catch any squid, we had a great time trying! It was a hilarious experience shared with great company.

Sun Sot a/k/a Surprising Cave

After a light breakfast, we had the option to embark on a unique adventure: exploring Surprising Cave. Known as the largest and most beautiful cave in Halong Bay, this hidden gem on Bo Hon Island was discovered in 1901 by the French explorers.

To reach the cave’s entrance, we climbed nearly 700 steep stone stairs—a good workout for sure! If you’re not up for a climb, it might be best to sit this one out.

As we reached the mouth of the cave, we entered the first chamber, aptly named the “waiting room.” This massive chamber is adorned with stunning stalagmites and stalactites, illuminated by colorful lights that enhance their natural beauty.

The cave’s second chamber, known as the “serene castle,” is the largest and most impressive. With its towering ceiling and fascinating rock formations, some resembling animals, it truly feels like a mystical castle. One popular formation is a turtle, where visitors toss coins for luck and longevity—a local tradition.

After conquering the steep climb and exploring the cave’s wonders, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the bay from the highest peak—a rewarding end to our cave adventure!

After our cave exploration, it was time to head back to our ship for a delightful brunch buffet. As we cruised past Lom Bo Island, Trong Mai Islet, and Ba Hang Fishing Village, we couldn’t help but soak in the stunning views one last time before disembarking at Tuan Chau International Marina.

Flying over Halong Bay, whether by seaplane or helicopter , is like stepping into a postcard! If you’re up for an adventure, hop aboard a seaplane in Hanoi for a 45-minute journey to Halong Bay. As you glide over the water, you’ll be treated to a bird’s-eye view of the bay’s famous limestone karst formations. These towering islands look like something out of a fantasy novel, and you’ll have a front-row seat to their beauty.

If you’re feeling even more daring, a helicopter tour will take you on an extended adventure over the bay. As you embark on your coastal journey, you’ll be greeted by the majestic limestone cliffs that seem to defy gravity, creating a magical landscape that’s straight out of a fairytale. The road snakes along the shoreline, offering glimpses of the bay and its myriad of islands and islets.

One of the best parts of the drive is stopping at various viewpoints along the way. These spots offer panoramic views of Halong Bay that are so stunning, you’ll want to capture them on camera. So roll down those windows, crank up the tunes, and get ready for a scenic drive you won’t soon forget!

When is the Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Halong Bay, Vietnam, is during the months of April, May, September, and October. The temperature is moderate, ranging from 68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity is relatively low.

How to Get to Halong Bay

You’ll likely fly into Hanoi Airport (HAN), and then use the cruise company’s shuttle, or your own transportation. You can rent a car in Hanoi, or take a taxi for about $85. Again, you may want to take a seaplane or a helicopter .  This option will, of course, take much less time (45 minutes rather than 3-4 hours), and you get a bird’s eye view of beautiful Halong Bay.

DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSPORT , and make sure your passport is up to date! Most countries will not permit you to enter unless your passport has more than six months remaining before it expires.

Legend of Halong Bay

The scientific explanation of karsts in Halong Bay is that they are formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks, such as limestone. But, local legend is a lot more interesting.

When Vietnam began developing into its own country, they had to fight against invaders.  The gods sent a family of dragons to help them defend the country.  These dragons were said to spit out jewels and jade, which then turned into islands and islets that dot the bay.  The islets and islands linked together to act as a wall against Vietnam’s invaders.  Then rock mountains began appearing in the sea and the invaders’ ships struck the rocks and each other.  Once Vietnam won the battle, the dragons decided they wanted to live in this peaceful bay.

• Junk (2006) : This Vietnamese film, known locally as “Lạc Lối” or “Lost in Paradise,” showcases the lives and struggles of young people in Halong Bay, offering an authentic glimpse into the local culture.

1. Kayaking in Ha Long Bay

Most tour operators offer the option to kayak from the boat. There is nothing better than having the freedom to paddle where you please, going for a swim in the cool turquoise waters, and spotting colorful fish. Go between one of the thousands of islands by boat, only stopping to relax on the small secluded beaches or see the many cheeky monkeys. The majority of the islands are uninhabited, which gives a real desert island feeling.

Within the limestone formations, there are many incredible caves to discover. Most of the caves are enormous and have stalagmites and stalactites.

Additionally, some can only be accessed by water, so travelers will have the opportunity to kayak under limestone arches into the hidden space beyond. Many cruises include kayaking and cave exploring in their packages, though you can also arrange them separately.

Hiking is another awesome activity that can be done when you land on the small islands. Many of the trails allow you to get up high so that you can get beautiful panoramic views over the bay.

5. Pearl Farm

For thousands of years, locals have lived off the ocean by farming pearls. Visit the working pearl farm located near Vung Vieng village and see how the workers harvest the pearls.

6. Floating Villages of Ha Long Bay

Visiting one of the many colorful floating villages in Ha Long Bay is a must-do on any traveler’s itinerary! The fishermen have lived in these charming floating villages for generations, in harmony with the water. See children playing and splashing, fishermen whistling tunes as they float along the calm waters, and colorful houses bobbing up and down to the beat of the ocean. There is even a floating school for the children!

7. Rock Climbing

The sheer limestone cliffs create plenty of opportunities for tourists to enjoy some challenging rock climbing. It is also a paradise for free climbers, who reward themselves after the tough climb by jumping into the cool, deep blue waters below. An adrenaline-pumping experience!

Diving is a relatively new activity in Ha Long Bay, but there are some companies that offer the experience of diving deep into the bay’s underwater world. Submerge yourself in the stunning jade-colored water to see vibrant corals and beautiful marine life. An awesome way to see what lies beneath the limestone towers.

Cycling has become incredibly popular as a way to explore the islands. For example, on Cat Ba Island , there are several bike trails to choose from. These paths go through dense forests, lush green rice paddies, and beautiful wide-open coastal paths. An excellent way to explore the area on the land.

10. On-Board Activities

Depending on the cruise, they may have these activities/services on board:

• Yoga/ Tai Chi – Start the day on the top deck of the cruise, watching the sun rise over this magical landscape as you learn the spiritual techniques of Tai Chi or yoga.
• Cooking Class – Learn to cook some Vietnamese classics with the onboard chef, allowing you to taste local ingredients and learn techniques. Vietnamese food is some of the best in Asia, so this is an excellent way to learn skills that you can take home with you.
• Spa & massage – the more high-end cruises offer spa and wellness at the end of an active day of kayaking and exploring.
• Star-gazing – watching the stars from the deck, sparkling across the shimmering waters of the bay, is an unforgettable experience. 
• Sunbathing – Sunbathe on the open decks. Depending on which islands the cruise is visiting, there will also be the option to relax and swim on sandy beaches.

Ha Long Bay is popular worldwide for its beauty, UNESCO status , and also its title as one of the new ‘seven natural wonders’ of the world. Because of this popularity, it can be very busy. Lan Ha Bay is a great alternative for peace and tranquility and is equally as beautiful as Ha Long Bay.

Lan Ha Bay is an extension of Ha Long Bay but is further away from the mainland, meaning fewer people (and boats) journey here. Another positive feature of Lan Ha Bay is that you are more likely to find white sandy stretches of beach here than in Ha Long Bay.

How to Get to Ha Long Bay

By Bus Ha Long Bay is located 2.5-3 hours to the east of Hanoi . Although, it is good to keep in mind that if traveling by bus, you should add an extra hour to the travel time. Most cruises will include a transfer from Hanoi; however, if they don’t, it’s easy to book your own bus .

By Train It is also possible to take a 7-hour train from Hanoi. However, there is only one train a day that leaves at 4.55 AM.

Best Time to Visit

To see the scenery at its most spectacular, it is advised to visit when it is warm and sunny. March to May, and September to November, are both good periods to visit. During this time, it will be dry and sunny but will be a little cooler than in the peak summer months.

Avoid visiting between December and March, as winters in the north of Vietnam can be surprisingly cold and overcast.

Halong Bay captivate those who venture around this part of the world. It is one of the most comfortable day trips from Hanoi you can take. You can also combine Halong Bay with Ninh Binh .

The karst structures are something created by another force, as if from another dimension.

No one knows precisely how long these structures have been around.

No one knows how they were created. No one knows how wonderful they are until you come to explore them yourself. 

Let me tell you more about Halong Bay and the surrounding islets in the middle of the emerald tinted sea.

This place has been known for a long time in human years.

Ancient cultures and artefacts have been discovered here and are at least 3500-4000 years old. Some say there have been discoveries that as early as 18000 years!

Halong Bay Itinerary – The ancient story

Halong Bay has a myth that has been passed through storytelling across the years.

The legend has that the people of this land were defending themselves against foreign invaders.

They were facing an uphill struggle as these conquerors were much more robust and more forceful than them. 

As they were about to fall, a dragon appeared. The dragon blew out the fire. This dragon was followed by a family of dragons, who spat and sprinkled jewels and stones all around the area. 

These rocks and stones became a guard against the enemy. They are the evergreen karst formations we see around Halong Bay today.

The bigger stones eventually formed together and created islets around the area. It is how Halong Bay got its name. It is called the Bay of the Descending Dragon. 

Halong Bay has around 2000 islets, and all are unique in size, shape, and structure. 

It is incredible to see and explore. The karst topography offers a complete range of stunning scenery.

You have so much to see, such as fields of formations, karts that are famous enough to be on banknotes and creations that have under layers and caves with much more to see than the top of the composition itself. 

It is mouth-watering to the intrepid explorer, the semi-professional photographer. Anyone visiting will be amazed looking around here. 

What to do and see in Halong Bay?

If we are around Halong Bay exploring, and there’s so many islets, caves, and karsts around, then what to add on your Halong Bay itinerary?

Generally, the most notorious and well-known sites are around and worth a visit. If you visit the jungle terrain of Cat Ba Island, you can move the evergreen bushes and pay a visit to the Trang Trung Cave . This cave is easily accessible and well worth a look around. 

You’ll see some stunning limestone structures that have been created naturally over thousands of years.

There are opportunities to see caves and karst bridge formations in the sea as well. 

Local boats men can guide around these areas. If you are feeling strong enough, you might want to try kayaking around the Bay.

There are scenic stops across the Bay. The lighthouse at Da Chong Islet is one that is surrounded by a picturesque landscape.

The area of the frog lake is one worth discovering and a place for some stunning pictures.

Enjoy Local life around Halong Bay

For those looking at traditional life, there a few villages who still live a traditional and ecological way of life around Halong Bay and these are also worth a visit.

You’ll see fishermen’s huts in the sea, where they wait to grab their daily catch. You’ll have a chance to look around take photos, maybe even stop for a bite to eat. 

Be sure to buy some of their handmade crafts as souvenirs.

They will appreciate your kindness. There are stops to Viet Hai Village. There are opportunities to go cycling around the area close to some of the villages around Halong Bay.

Ha Long Bay Itinerary: 3 Days in Halong Bay, Vietnam

Wondering how many days to spend in Halong Bay? I’ve done a 2 day & a 3 day cruise, so see which one I recommend for your Ha Long Bay itinerary!

I’m sure you’ve all seen photos and can judge for yourself, but Ha Long Bay is one of those bucket list destinations you just have to visit. With thousands of emerald islands dotted all around a bright blue bay, it is arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s even got the awards to back it up. In 2011 it was inducted as one of the new 7 Natural Wonders of the World, so you know, it’s very popular. As in, really really popular.

Somehow, I have been lucky enough to visit Ha Long Bay in Vietnam three times. Once in 2009 (before it was a natural wonder don’t you know!), once in 2012, and most recently in 2023.

I’m by no means an expert on the area at all, but in my eyes it has changed so much over that period of time.

Before, you used to be able to jump on a Ha Long Bay cruise and spend a couple of lazy days exploring the little islands. It was magical and I completely fell in love with the place.

Today, there are hundreds of boats in Ha Long Bay all doing exactly the same thing. Get off here, take this photo. During peak season, up to 500 boats can be in the bay each day which is just crazy. Mass tourism gets thrown around quite a lot these days, but it could certainly apply here.

So what’s the point, right? Just skip it and move on. WRONG!

You can still have an authentic experience in Ha Long Bay with hardly any other tourists around. And it is still as beautiful and magical as it once was. Hopefully I can show you how in this blog post.   

Is Halong Bay worth visiting?

I think the answer to this question is how you do it. By far the majority of tourists visiting Ha Long Bay do it on a day trip. Some of these tours even start from Hanoi well over two hours away.

You get picked up at 08:30, arrive at the port at 11:00, and then set sail for Ha Long Bay. You’re not really among the islands till about 11:30. And because it’s only a day trip, you don’t go very far into the bay. That means you’re sharing the experience with hundreds of other tourists all at the same time. Then you leave back for Hanoi around 17:30. It’s hardly a day, is it?

Don’t get me wrong, I still think the 1-day cruise can be beautiful. You go to places like Ti Top Island which has such an incredible view of Halong Bay. Also, millions of people do this tour every year, and they love it.

However, if you’re looking to get off the tourist conveyor belt and you’d like a more authentic experience in Vietnam , then I’d really recommend a longer cruise. Then you really get to see the majesty of Halong Bay.

2 or 3 day Halong Bay cruise?

So, this is what you really want to know, isn’t it? Should you go on a 2 or 3 day Halong Bay cruise?

Well, I’ve done both, and the 3 days in Halong Bay was up there with the best thing we did on our most recent trip to Vietnam.

The 2-day cruise is good, don’t get me wrong, but the 3-day cruise is so much better.

One of the real benefits of doing the 3 day, 2 night cruise is you go so much deeper into Halong Bay. Because of that, you leave all the other boats behind you.

On the second day of our 3 day cruise, we genuinely had some islands completely to ourselves. Not another soul around. What was I saying about mass tourism?

On some islands, we’d hike up to a viewpoint and be the only ones there, quietly taking in the stunning views and having time to take photos. Compare that to the busy lines frog-marching to the top of Ti Top Island when you have to wait your turn for a photo. It’s night and day.

It’s hard to put into words, but it makes you appreciate the area so much more when you get to have it all to yourself. It really made me fall in love with Halong Bay all over again.

If you’ve got the time and money, I’d really recommend 3 days in Halong Bay. It still is one of the most beautiful places in the world – you just need to see it without all the other tourists.

My 3-day Halong Bay itinerary

As I’d done the 2-day cruise a couple of times before, I knew exactly what I was looking for with our 3-day cruise. That’s why I went with Emeraude , a beautiful old-fashioned paddlesteamer dating back to 1910s. These guys have some of the best Halong Bay cruise reviews around, and this is the ship that Anthony Bourdain (one of my travel icons) sailed on in his Parts Unknown series.

The boat harks back to a forgotten time, with vintage décor and burnished teak in all the cabins. It’s like a time capsule, and you can’t help but feel like you’re an old explorer sailing to new lands.

Like me say this now, but I had the best time on the Emeraude. The cabin was gorgeous, the food was incredible, and the staff were so attentive. Plus, they pack your days full of things to do so you’re never bored. And if you are, then you can just pause and take in the breath-taking scenery.

Right, let’s get into it then!

If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, then don’t forget to read my Vietnam packing list to make sure you’ve got everything before you go!

12:00-12:30: We checked in at the Emeraude reception in Tuan Chau Marina. Here we were welcomed by the whole team, and then briefed on the 3-day cruise in Halong Bay. The team also took our luggage to our room which was a nice touch.

12:30: We boarded the ship, checked into our beautiful cabin, and then enjoyed a welcome drink on the top deck.

12:45: We set sail and took in the views as we left the marina. Lunch was also served soon after we left which was a delicious buffet.

14:00: We visited Ti Top Island. There was time to climb to the panoramic viewpoint at the top, as well as take a swim or relax on the beach.

15:30: Once on board the Emeraude, we enjoyed some crepes on the top deck as an afternoon snack.

16:30: The ship sailed over to the famous Pearl Village. Here we learned about how pearls are cultivated and why Halong Bay is famous for them. There was also an option to go kayaking here too (at an extra cost).

17:30: HAPPY HOUR! We enjoyed a few 2-4-1 cocktails on the top deck chatting to a few other guests. The chef also hosted a little cooking demonstration showing us how to make Vietnamese spring rolls.

19:00: A large buffet dinner of Asian and Western dishes was served in the main restaurant. After dinner, people gathered in the bar area for more drinks, enjoyed a movie screening in the restaurant or tried their hand at squid fishing.

07:00: Sunrise yoga or coffee and cakes. This was such a great way to start the day with the limestone islands all around.

07:30: Breakfast was served in the main restaurant.

08:30: Transfer to a different boat for the 3 day Halong Bay cruise passengers. This is a much smaller and more secluded boat called the Emeraude Premium . It was so amazing having our own private boat for the day and made the experience even more special.

10:00: The first place we visited was Luon Cave. Here we got to row through a cave into a tear-shaped lake. It was a bit like a James Bond villains secret lair.

11:00: We then sailed over to Trong Cave. This was a giant cave that cut right through the middle of an island so you could see through both sides. The views of the other islands from inside the cave were unbelievable.

12:00: After that, we kayaked over to Bo Hong Island, an island with a secret beach.

13:00: After such an incredible morning exploring Halong Bay, it was time for lunch on the boat. This was a private 4-course lunch with the islands all around.

14:30: We then sailed over to Me Cung Cave, a cave where you can see prehistoric imprints. There is also an amazing viewpoint of the lake.

15:30: Sailed back to the main boat, the Emeraude Classic, to join up with the other passengers.

16:00: Once on board the Emeraude, we enjoyed some crepes on the top deck as an afternoon snack.

06:30: Sunrise yoga or coffee and cakes. This was such a great way to start the day with the limestone islands all around.

07:30: We visited Sung Sot Cave, one of the largest cave complexes in Halong Bay. One of the Emeraude team led a guided tour, giving us key information about the cave.

09:00: Back on board the ship, we enjoyed a buffet brunch in the restaurant, as the ship sailed back towards the marina.

11:00: Back at Tuan Chau Marina, it was time to disembark and wave goodbye to the Emeraude Classic!

Highlights of Ha Long Bay

To be honest with you, I could quite easily talk about every single thing that we did on our 3 days in Halong Bay, but it would be the biggest blog post ever and I want you to experience it for yourself. It’s safe to say that I enjoyed practically everything we did on our cruise, but here are a few highlights.

Sailing through the islands

Even though this was my third time visiting Halong Bay, nothing quite prepares you for seeing islands up close. They tower over you, and each one is completely unique. It really does live up to being one of the most beautiful places in the world. When you’re somewhere like this, you almost don’t need any of the activities – just sailing through the islands is an activity in itself.

Ti Top Island

I know I’ve already said it’s one of the most popular places that people visit in Halong Bay, but it is for a reason. The panoramic views at the top of the island are unparalleled. This is one of the top viewpoints in Halong Bay.

We got here early in the morning and had the place completely to ourselves. To get to this cave, we had to be rowed through a low-hanging cave entrance. This then opens up to the rising rock and cliffs all around as we paddled through the middle of the lake. As I said, it almost felt like a James Bond villains lair.

This was a giant cave that cut right through the middle of an island so you could see through both sides. The views of the other islands from inside the cave were unbelievable. I think it was one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen. Apparently they held a concert in here once – what a place for it!

Bo Hong Island

Bo Hong Island is without a doubt my favourite place in Halong Bay. To get here, we jumped in some kayaks and paddled for 15 minutes following the rocky outline of the island. We then beached our kayaks and walked through a very impressive cave to the other side of the island. As if this wasn’t enough, there is a secret beach here with the most beautiful views. It is like the ever-popular Maya Bay in Thailand (the one where they filmed The Beach) but without the hordes of tourists. It is such a special spot.

Private lunch on the Emeraude Premium

After we visited Bo Hong Island, we had a private lunch on board the Emeraude Premium. This was a 4-course extravaganza which was just delicious. With the incredible views of all the little islands dotted around, they could’ve served a bread roll and it would’ve been a memorable experience.  

All the food on the Emeraude Classic

I was actually really impressed with all the food on board the Emeraude Classic. I always get worried that buffets aren’t actually that good, but the food was great here with lots of different options. For me, some of the Vietnamese dishes were cracking.  

Afternoon crepes

I really liked the ceremony of the afternoon crepes on the top deck. It was the perfect opportunity to stop each day and just relax for 30 minutes. Also, it really did feel like something passengers would’ve done a century ago as they explore the area too.

Stargazing at night

Even at night Halong Bay can be stunningly beautiful. As we live in London, we rarely get to see the stars like this, but they were glistening like diamonds in the sky at night. Each evening we would have a drink on the top deck and sit under the stars talking about the highlights of everything we’d seen that day.

My review of the 3 day, 2 night Halong Bay cruise

One of my biggest fears about returning to Halong Bay again was that I’d just visit all the same places again. Naively, I kinda thought I’d done Halong Bay. Oh how wrong I was.

I am so happy we did the 3 day, 2 night cruise (you can see our Halong Bay cruise itinerary here ). That second day was one of the best days I’ve ever had travelling, and it will live with me a long time. Not only did we get to see so many incredible places in one day, but we did so without all the other tourists. I’m not lying but we really did have most places like Luon Cave and Bo Hong Island all to ourselves. I just didn’t think that would be possible anymore.

Our cruise, the Emeraude, was brilliant too, I couldn’t fault them. They really looked after us from the moment we walked onto the boat. All the food was delicious, the program they offer with all their activities and excursions is great, and of course who doesn’t enjoy Happy Hour at sunset.

If you’re on the fence and you’re unsure what cruise to do, I’d really recommend spending 3 days in Halong Bay. Only then can you really get to experience one of the most beautiful places in the world.

• Visa: Check the visa requirements for your nationality. Many travelers can get a visa on arrival or an e-visa. Get the Ultimate Guide for getting a Vietnam Visa here!
• Timezone: Vietnam is in the Indochina Time Zone (ICT), UTC+7.
• Voltage: The standard voltage is 220V, and the plugs are usually Type A (two flat pins) or Type C (two round pins). All Halong Bay cruises have electricity on board, just like a hotel on land would.
• Internet: Halong Bay Cruise ships do have Wi-Fi. It’s usually only available in the restaurant on the boat, though. 
• SIM Cards: You can easily purchase SIM cards at the airport or local stores for data and calls. Since there are no cell towers in the middle of Halong Bay, your mobile data signal will probably be weak or nonexistent unless you’re next to the mainland.
• Currency: Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND). VND only comes in bills (no coins), and 1 USD equals about 24,000 VND (commonly abbreviated as 24k). Some shops catering to tourists may accept USD, but most only take VND.
• Credit Cards: Halong Bay cruise operators will almost certainly accept all major credit cards.
• Tipping: Vietnam is not a tipping culture, so a tip is not expected. A tip is a good way to bring a smile to someone’s face, though. Note that cab drivers and tour guides often rely on some tipping, so it’s a good idea to tip them.

Visiting Halong Bay: tips to plan your cruise

Dotted with jagged limestone pinnacles,  Halong Bay  is one of Vietnam’s biggest attractions. The vast majority of its 10 million visitors a year arrive aboard day and overnight cruises.

The multitude of trips on offer can be overwhelming: here’s the skinny on Halong Bay to get you started.

Make the most of your visit

Halong Bay retains much of the otherworldly magic conjured up by 1969 jungle-clad islands and islets rising from deep emerald waters. Getting there is increasingly straightforward, thanks to the 2018 building of an expressway connecting Halong City and Hanoi , and the opening of Van Don International Airport (with flights to Ho Chi Minh City , and international flights coming soon) a mere 50km from Halong Bay.

But the bay's popularity has taken its toll. Concerned about overcrowding, water pollution and litter, the Vietnamese government has imposed strict regulations.

Today, boats must follow one of five prescribed routes through the bay, meaning overnight cruises leaving roughly from the same place at the same time play follow-the-leader as they hit the major highlights of the bay almost in frustrating concert. In addition, swimming is only allowed at a few designated beaches, with drones surveilling the skies to make sure boat captains comply.

Especially with these rules in place, your choice of cruise can make or break your Halong Bay experience.

Luxury cruises

Want to spoil yourself? Halong Bay has some sumptuous cruise options that are basically luxury hotels on water. You’re paying for the experience of five-star amenities here – not for any particular divergence from the typical cruise itinerary – but if you want to live it up from a swanky sun-lounger while watching the sun set over a vista of craggy jungle-topped islands, you can’t really go wrong.

For a luxury cruise, bank on spending around US$300–350 for a cabin.

Pros:  It’s a serious treat. While the cost may seem high, it typically includes higher quality meals and amenities on board, such as a spa or gym, as well as entry to Halong Bay.

Cons: Those who are after good value should probably look at midrange options. Overnight trips (marketed as two-day/one-night trips) usually involve 24 hours or less on the actual boat, which can rankle given what you pay for the experience.

Budget and midrange cruises

Most Halong Bay visitors go for midrange or budget cruises, but there is a huge range when it comes to price and value for money. At one end of the scale are some ultra-budget boats where conditions are rustic at best; at the other are some excellent midrange options offering cosy hotel-style cabins, knowledgeable on-board tour guides and kayaking stops. If purse strings are tight, for facilities, comfort and safety considerations, it’s sometimes better to choose a day cruise with a midrange operator rather than a bargain-basement overnight trip.

Budget cruise prices start from US$60 per person for a day trip. Paying between US$110 and US$130 should get you a worthwhile overnight midrange cruise.

Pros: Competition is fierce, which means plenty of operators add freebies into the itinerary, such as kayaking and private minibus transfers from Hanoi.

Cons: You have to wade through a lot of options, which can be confusing. It’s worth doing your pre-trip research.

Day cruises

If you’re pressed for time, do as many locals do and see Halong Bay on a day cruise from Tuan Chau Marina in Halong City . Cruise boats can be rented by the hour (around US$30 per hour for a boat that accommodates up to 20 passengers) or you can join other passengers aboard a four- to six-hour cruise for about US$50 per person. Options vary greatly, so check whether the price includes lunch.

Pros: Day cruises are cheap and easily organised tours right on the spot in Halong City, plus there’s free entertainment on board provided by karaoke.

Cons: Can be crowded and noisy, with only time enough for a few stops. Did we mention the karaoke?

Most decent midrange Halong Bay cruises will offer an hour or so of kayaking (some charging an extra fee). Paddling around the karsts allows you to experience the limestone towers from a completely different angle: up close and without the constant thrum of an engine in the background.

For more experienced kayakers, there are also kayak-only trips. These trips are run by a handful of operators based in nearby Lan Ha Bay (off Cat Ba Island ) rather than Halong Bay itself, though Lan Ha’s islet-scattered sea has as much wow factor as Halong Bay and is much less visited.

Full-day kayaking trips from Cat Ba Island cost between US$25 and US$30 per person.

Pros: In one of Southeast Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, a kayak trip is a way of escaping the crowds.

Cons: On a full kayaking tour, you’re only going to see a sliver of the area. To see more, it’s a better idea to take a cruise that includes a kayaking stop.

One of the most important reasons to steer away from the ultra-budget cruises is safety. After a boat sinking (and the loss of 12 lives) in 2011, new safety regulations were brought in for Halong Bay cruise boats, but scrimping on safety does still go on with some fly-by-night operators.

In particular, check that any kayaking stops are accompanied by a guide. Because of the variable and surprisingly strong currents close to the karst islands, a safety-conscious operator won’t allow kayakers to paddle off from the boat by themselves.

Booking tips

Most trips leave from Hanoi, but you can also base yourself in Halong City. When you're booking, bear these tips in mind:

• The Halong Bay entry fee is US$13 per person for a day cruise and US$25 for an overnight cruise. This is generally included in your ticket, though it's worth double-checking for the cheapest cruises. Activities like kayaking and island bike rides may cost extra.
• When comparing prices, check whether a transfers between Hanoi and Halong Bay are included, and if so, whether it’s one-way or round-trip, and if it uses the new expressway or not.
• While the Ha Long–Hai Phong Expressway has cut travel time between Hanoi and Halong Bay to 2½ hours, that really only applies to private vehicles which don’t stop to pick up any other passengers and which don’t make the usual 30-minute comfort stop halfway through the journey. Aboard a shuttle bus, plan for a three to 3½-hour ride.
• Check closely to see whether overnight cruise rates are priced by cabin or by person. Single travellers should expect to pay 70-80% of the full cabin price.
• The itinerary on a one-night cruise can be very packed, with shore excursions, kayaking, swimming and hiking all included, leaving little time to actually just sit and watch the amazing scenery during daylight hours. If you have the time, a two-night itinerary is much more leisurely, with the bonus of visiting sights with fewer people around.

Arranging a tour

Some recommended operators:

• Vega Travel offers good-value overnight and two-night tours with comfortable cabins, and kayaking included. Highly recommended by travellers.
• Cat Ba Ventures runs tours out of Cat Ba Island, taking in both Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay.
• Indochina Sails has a traditional Chinese junk that’s been fully fitted out with all mod cons.
• Handspan Adventure Travel has a proper sailing ship, so you don’t have to put up with that pesky engine hum. Handspan also runs full kayaking tours in nearby Lan Ha Bay.
• Hai Au Aviation offers Vietnam’s only seaplane flights, including a 25-minute scenic flight over Halong Bay which presents a completely different perspective. From the air, the islands truly do resemble the undulating body of a dragon, the meaning of 'Halong'.
• L’Azalée Private Premium Cruise has the bay’s only single-cabin cruiser for an ultra-luxe experience, but expect to pay dearly for the privilege.

One of the best times to visit Halong Bay is November – there are blue skies aplenty, temperatures are moderate and there’s a good chance of calm seas. From May to September, tropical storms can whip up without much warning. This is also high season in Halong, particularly from June to mid-August when domestic tourism peaks.

February to April is often cool and drizzly, and the fog can make visibility low, though also adds an ethereal atmosphere. Year-round, cruises and tourist boats sometimes need to alter their itineraries, or trips can be cancelled with little warning depending on the weather and sea conditions. Halong Bay: Day Trip or Overnight Cruise?

Halong Bay is one of the most visited places in Vietnam. It’s such an incredible place on earth where you sail in-between a maze of towering limestone cliffs while taking in the extraordinary scenery.

However, it can be difficult to decide exactly how you should visit Halong Bay. Is it worth it to pay the extra amount of money and do an overnight cruise or is a day trip to Halong Bay enough?

That’s the question we’ll address in this travel guide.

We’ve been lucky enough to visit Halong Bay twice – once on an overnight cruise and once on a day trip. So in this blog post, we’ll dive into the two different ways to visit Halong Bay and discuss itinerary, pros and cons, and prices.

Afterwards, you can hopefully make an informed decision on whether you should spend the extra money on an overnight cruise in Halong Bay or if you should just visit on a day tour.

Either way, we really hope that you get to experience this fantastic place in Vietnam!

About Halong Bay in Vietnam

Before we begin this blog post about how to visit Halong Bay, we want to share a little bit of information about this incredible place in Vietnam, and what you can do to be a better visitor.

Halong Bay is situated in the North of Vietnam. It’s about 170 kilometers away from Hanoi, and the drive takes between 2-3 hours, which is why you can easily do a day tour.

Halong Bay is a true natural wonder.

Since 1994 it has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

It’s a large area in the ocean that consists of a seascape made from 1600 islands. It’s truly an incredibly beautiful place, but it’s also highly touristed.

Sustainable tourism in Halong Bay

Every year, millions of tourists are visiting Halong Bay, which makes it one of the biggest tourist attractions in not just Vietnam, but all of Southeast Asia.

And if there’s one thing we’ve learned from traveling the world, then it is that with mass tourism comes destruction.

On both our day tour around Halong Bay and on the overnight luxury cruise, we saw disgusting garbage streams in the ocean. It was really sad to see. So, please don’t throw any garbage in the bay!

While we recommend everyone to go and experience Halong Bay in this blog post, we don’t find the high numbers of visitors sustainable in the long run. Hopefully Vietnam will limit the numbers of visitors in the future, so the bay gets less polluted.

We’ve also tried to research (latest in 2023) whether there are any electric boats or cruises in the bay that offer tours, but with no luck. If we ever find any eco-friendly options, we’ll make sure to recommend them in this guide.

Now, let’s get to the main essence of this blog post: How to visit Halong bay – on a day tour or luxury cruise?

Day trip in Halong Bay – The cheap option

If you’re staying in Hanoi, then you can easily book a full day tour to Halong Bay . This day tour picks you up at your hotel in Hanoi in the morning, takes you on a cruise in Halong Bay with Vietnamese lunch included and has several sightseeing stops on the way, and then drops you back off at your hotel in the evening.

We also recommend you to go to Cat Ba island and do a day tour from here. Cat Ba island is situated right in the middle of the beautiful bay. Since most tourists head straight to Halong Bay, it’s a quiet tourist destination.

On top of that, Cat Ba island is a national park! it’s beautiful, green, and lush – so grab a scooter and go explore the wilderness. If you are not into exploring the jungle, then you can also head off to the beach, grab a cold beer and just relax.

There are several daily buses going to Cat Ba island and Halong Bay from Hanoi. You can easily get your bus ticket online at 12go.asia .

Halong Bay day tour price

The Halong Bay day trip from Hanoi that we mentioned earlier will set you back $55 per person (notice prices are always subject to change). we can see most day tours on Viator range between $55-$65 per person, unless you go directly from Ha long City or Cat Ba island, then the day trip will be much cheaper.

We ended up paying 540.000 VND per person for a day tour around Lan Ha and Halong Bay from Cat Ba in 2019 (prices may have gone slightly up). This is just to show that going to Cat Ba first is a super cheap option. However, we understand not everyone have the time to go here first.

Our Halong Bay day tour itinerary

• Pick-up at Cat Ba city center in the morning
• Sail around Lan Ha Bay
• Visit a fisherman’s house, learn about their culture, and see their 100 kilo big fish
• Lunch time!
• Swim in the bay
• Sail around Ha Long Bay
• Kayak in the bay
• Swim to a secluded beach
• Return to Cat Ba through a fishermen village

Pros & Cons about the Halong Bay day trip

The best thing about the day tour was to kayak around Halong Bay because it was fun, and it made you feel even closer to the beautiful nature.

We even got to jump into the ocean from the kayak! Although, I’m not sure our guide had planned on this because he didn’t look super content about all of his guests suddenly jumping in the ocean – but we did have a lot of fun getting up into the kayaks again.

The worst thing about the tour was the social atmosphere on the boat.

Glenn had a few beers and tried to socialize, but most of the people on the boat chose to read a book or acted uninterested in us when we tried to engage in conversation. This is one of the problems with booking tours – you never know who you get to spend the day with.

But in the end, we both agreed that the day trip in Halong Bay was really nice – now we just had to experience the overnight cruise and see the different.

Overnight cruise in Halong Bay – the luxurious option

A few months after our day tour, we decided to return to Halong Bay and do an overnight cruise this time. Glenn’s best friend was visiting from Belgium and it was his first time in Vietnam, so of course a trip to the limestone pillars in the ocean was inevitable.

We completely blew our budget by booking this overnight cruise, but we got a lot in return. At first, we were a bit confused about which cruise to book and how to book it. But it turned out to be very easy. We actually just made our booking through Booking.com .

The hard part was to choose between the millions of overnight cruises (okay, maybe a bit exaggerated, but you’ll see if you try and book a luxury cruise in Halong Bay). Eventually, we just picked one.

The cruise crew picked us up in Hanoi, and from that moment on, we didn’t have to do anything for the next 24 hours. We just had to relax and be completely pampered. As budget travelers, we are not used to this… but it was a nice change from some of the lousy hostels we’ve often stayed in.

Halong Bay overnight cruise price

We had a big double room with a bathroom and balcony to ourselves, we were served 4 meals during our time on the cruise, and all activities were already planned and paid for. The only thing that wasn’t included was drinks.

All of this cost us 6.093.000 VND for two people for just one night stay on a luxurious overnight cruise in Halong Bay, which is around $250 depending on the currency rate.

• Check in to our rooms on the cruise
• Kayaking and swimming in the bay
• Sunset and Cooking Class
• Dinner time!
• Squid fishing
• Sunrise and Tai Chi
• Breakfast time!

Best and worst things about the overnight cruise

The best thing was to see Halong Bay at night.

And we absolutely loved watching the sunset from the cruise! When it got pitch-black, you could see a ton of lights from the other cruises that were also anchored for the night. It was a really calm and beautiful sight.

The next best things was the food on the cruise, which was really good!

The worst thing about the cruise was that the beers was super overpriced. I know, it sounds a bit silly to complain about drink prices. But seriously, everything on the cruise that wasn’t already paid for was super expensive.

The last thing on the itinerary, the row boat tour, was also very disappointing. We literally went 20 meters into a “cave” to just get out to the other side and row back. Seemed pretty pointless.

Conclusion: Day trip or overnight cruise in Halong Bay

All in all, both experiences were great. But if we were to do it again, we would definitely go back to Cat Ba island for another day tour around Halong Bay! Cat Ba island has so much to offer and we would like to go explore it some more.

We prefer the cheaper and alternative way of visiting Halong Bay because a cruise is just a bit too formal for us.

On the day tour in Halong Bay we got a cultural experience. We felt like we got a lot closer to understand the Vietnamese people living at sea than we did on the overnight cruise. On the cruise it was more about pleasing us guests than learning about Halong Bay.

We also assume that a small day trip boat pollutes Halong Bay less than a big overnight cruise. That might be something to consider if you want to be more eco-friendly. However, we would be hypocrites to tell you not to do the overnight cruise since we did it ourselves and actually had a pretty good time.

One of the absolute highlights of both trips was definitely kayaking around the bay! But we must admit the kayaking in the day tour was way more fun because we even got to kayak through two caves.

That being said, we do not regret doing the cruise in any way. It was a great experience that we’ll cherish. I guess it’s all personal preference. You should ask yourself what you want out of your trip to Halong Bay, and then decide whether you want to do a day tour or an overnight cruise.

Day Tour from Cat Ba: 1.080.000 VND/2 people

Luxury Overnight Night Cruise from Hanoi: 6.093.000 VND/2 people

All we can say is, whether you want to go on a budget day tour or spend a lot of money on an overnight luxury cruise, then you should definitely pay Halong Bay a visit. It’s such a wonderful place on earth!
