My experience taking a Grand Canyon helicopter ride

If I had to choose one word to describe my experience flying over the Grand Canyon , it would be “magical.”

The view from the ground-level outlooks didn’t live up to my expectations at all, and I couldn’t capture the true size and majesty of the canyon. Indeed, it all depends on the time of day and the lighting conditions, but I would still 100% recommend taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour to see this place from above. Not only will you see what a marvel the Grand Canyon is, but you won’t have to deal with all the crowds on the ground!

Hello! Thank you for posting and sharing your experience. On the Helicopter and/or Airplane tour, is the ‘Seat Assignment’ a concern? My family (wife, 3 kids and I) had the Heli [tour] experience at the Canadian Rocky Mountain. One kid sat in the front with the Pilot. The rest sat in the back BUT, we’re face-2-face: 2 facing front, 2 facing back. The ones facing back did NOT get to see what the ‘frontal’ passengers did, bad experience. At the airplane tours, everyone gets the same stunning views. On the helicopter tour, you can pay to have a front seat next to the pilot. We paid for that in our last helicopter tour to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas last month and it was worthy!

But I think you will enjoy the tour even if you don’t get that seat since no one in the helicopter is facing back. Are you taking the tour from the Grand Canyon South Rim terminal or from Las Vegas? I can recommend you which is the one I have like the most so far!

The cabin is part of the Bright Angel lodge complex and now operates as a guesthouse for tourists.

Mary Colter was an architect who was born in Pennsylvania. She designed several structures in the village and surrounding areas, including Hopi House, Lookout Studio and the Desert View Watchtower, one of her most famous designs erected in 1932. The Watchtower is located more than 7,000 feet above sea level approximately 27 miles from the village. Its design is based on the Anasazi watchtowers built by the area's original inhabitants. Visitors enjoy unobstructed views of the Colorado River and the canyon floor. Hopi House draws its inspiration from buildings in Old Oraibi, a Hopi settlement in the eastern region of Arizona, and was once inhabited by Hopi Indians who offered their arts and crafts for sale to Grand Canyon tourists.

What's the ground rule of seating? Are heavier passengers assigned to rear seats?

When I went I was old that the "computer" assigns seating in the helicopter. So there isn't any negotiation on your assigned seat. Every passenger is discreetly weighed. And yes, the heavier passengers were in the back seats. But there really isn't… more

We had an amazing flight on Maverick helicopters to view the Grand Canyon. Vern was our pilot. He was fun to talk with and made us feel very safe. Maverick has a great safety record so it made us feel comfortable. This was the flight of a lifetime we could've never seen the greatness of the Grand Canyon by just touring around the rim. It was a nice trip that was well worth it.

Toby is an incredible pilot. Checkin was easy. Our original 45 minute Canyon Spirit flight was scheduled for a Friday with higher winds (25-30mph) so we opted for a different day. Definitely plan your vacation to Grand Canyon around the helicopter tour! I went with my mom and it was my first time in a helicopter like this, and it was an extraordinary experience. Every seat has a great view. My mom sat by the window and I next to her but the views were extraordinary all around. We stayed in Flagstaff so the airport is about an hour away. Need to know: in April it was a bit chilly but the helicopters have onboard temperature controls so everyone is comfortable. Max seating was 6 and it's by weight so the pilot tells you where to sit. Loved the experience and 100% recommend to first time helicopter passengers, families and bucket list fulfillment seekers.

Unbeatable views of the Grand Canyon. The flight over the Kai Bab, to and over the rim of the Grand Canyon, and then the time over the Canyon was amazing. I've visited the Grand Canyon several times, but this was by far the most memorable trip. While each helicopter can hold as many as 7 passengers, there were only 4 in ours so everyone had clear access to a window. The pilot was friendly and professional and his commentary was informative. Definitely recommended!

Just give it a try and check off riding helicopter from your list. We booked the night tour online. The bus picked us up 1 hour and 20 minutes before our official tour starts, we had to wait like an hour to wait for our ride. There are 3 front seats by the pilot and 4 back seats. The best seats would be the back ones behind the pilot seat. But it doesn't matter you will get a good view and you don't have a saying where to sit. You get seated based on your weight. The trip is 10 minutes long and the ride was smooth. At the end of the tour the pilot let you take pictures by the helicopter.

Which Part of the Grand Canyon Should I Visit

The canyon features four major areas—north, south, west and east. However, not all areas are open year-round, like the North Rim, since it receives significant snow from the fall until the spring. Located just outside the South Entrance, it is a resort town with a Western flavor. Activities and tours are available for everyone, from family travelers to RVers to high-adventure types.  

See the inner depths of the Grand Canyon on a 6-story screen in a 37-minute film. Learn about the Grand Canyon’s history along with the people who call it home. 

Located at 450 State Route 64, the IMAX film starts every half-hour from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Winter hours are 10:30 a.m to 6:30 p.m. Adult admission (11+) is $13.50, kids admission (6 to 10) is $10.50, and kids 5 and under are free. 

Grand Canyon National Geographic Visitor Center 

In addition to the IMAX theater, there is an information desk with Grand Canyon tours and maps, souvenir shopping, and restrooms. 

Located at 450 State Route 64. Open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Winter hours are  10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from November 1 to February 28.  Free to enter.

One of the best ways to see the canyon is from above. If you’ve never flown in a helicopter, then this is an ideal location for this bucket-list adventure. Papillon offers several different tours and aircraft, both fixed-wing and helicopter. Aerial tours can also be combined with land tours. 

Located at 3568 Airport Rd., at the Grand Canyon National Airport. Open daily with flights from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from March to October, with shorter winter hours for the rest of the year.  Fares start at $269 per person. 

For nearly 100 years, Grand Canyon Scenic Airlines has been flying over the canyon and shuttling passengers to nearby destinations. Book a scenic flight and fly the length of the canyon. The Airline flies from Las Vegas, Nevada; Page, Arizona; and the West Rim airport. 

Located at 3555 Airport Rd., at the Grand Canyon National Airport. Open daily with flights starting at 9 a.m. Fares start at $179 per person.

Take a one-hour or two-hour guided horseback ride through the Kaibab National Forest. Guided rides are available from mid-March to the first week of November. Riders must be 6 years old and 48 inches tall. All riders must be under 230 pounds. 

Located at 472 Moqui Dr. One-hour rides are $58.50 per person. Two-hour rides are $110.50. 

Raft the river that carved the canyon with a raft trip down the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. Find a trip that suits your group from one-day calm floats to multi-day trips with white water.  

Find several concessionaires approved by the National Park Service. 

Take a guided tour of the Grand Canyon, including the option for sunset and guided hiking tours. 

Pink Adventure Tours is located at 450 State Route 64. Open year-round. Several tours are available for $109 per person. 

Grand Canyon Jeep Tours and Safaris is located at 408 State Route 64. Open from March 1 to end of November. Several tours available from $120 per person. Alternative fuel vehicles available. 

Skydiving 

Jump out over the  canyon from 16,000 feet for the ultimate rush. Paragon Skydiving offers tandem jumps with seasoned skydivers.  

Packages start at $329 per person. Open daily with seasonal hours, and jumps depart on the hour. Located at 1542 Liberator Dr. at the Main Terminal of the Grand Canyon National Airport.

Where to Eat in Tusayan 

Big e steakhouse and saloon.

After exploring the canyon all day, enjoy a steak dinner. Afterward, head to the saloon for a full bar stocked with wine, local beer, spirits and coffee drinks. 

Located at Bldg 395 State Route 64, Grand Canyon. Open daily from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. 

Las Vegas National Park Road Trip 

Things to do in williams arizona.

With its convenient location on Interstate 40, roadtrippers might prefer Williams. 

This scenic railroad chugs out of its station daily, and service started in 1901. Passengers depart the Williams Depot bound for the log cabin depot at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. See the high desert along with the Kaibab National Forest on the 64-mile route.

The train departs daily from Williams at 9:30 a.m. and returns at 5:30 p.m. Ride in a restored vintage rail car in six different classes.

Grand Canyon Railway offers multi-day packages with lodging at its depot in Williams and inside Grand Canyon National Park. A pet resort is also available when you visit the Grand Canyon. 

Route 66 

In 1926, this road was considered a super highway that originated in Chicago, Illinois, and traveled across the U.S. to Long Beach, California. In most areas, the original Route 66 was gobbled up by more modern roads, though you can find it alive and well in Williams. 

Drive through 160 acres on a three-mile route in your own vehicle to see North American animals, such as black and grizzly bears, mule deer, Rocky Mountain goats, American badgers, and Alaskan tundra wolves. You can also see American bison, bobcats, beavers, prairie dogs, and pronghorn deer. 

Located at 1500 Route 66. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adult admission (12+ ) starts at $30 and kids (4 to 12 ) are $20. 

Where to Eat in Williams

Pine country restaurant.

Pine Country Restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus featuring favorites like traditional breakfast items, sandwiches, and burgers, as well as steak and pasta dishes. The dessert case is the first thing you see when you arrive. Find house-made pies, like key lime, several varieties of apple, and seasonal favorites.

As the closest gateway town to Las Vegas, Grand Canyon West offers adventure tours and the heart-dropping Sky Walk. While in Grand Canyon West, you can learn about people who live around the Grand Canyon, like the Hualapai, Navajo, Hopi, and Havasupai at Eagle Point. You can also explore the traditional village or see a weekend performance in the shaded outdoor amphitheater. 

Then hop a shuttle to Guano Point to see the old tramway tower used for harvesting guano. Grand Canyon West also offers helicopter tours, river rafting, and a zip line. 

General admission ( 4+) starts $49 per person. The Sky Walk requires an additional timed ticket and is $26. 

On the western rim of the Grand Canyon, walk over its edge and see unparalleled views of the Colorado River. Step out a 10-foot wide, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet from the canyon wall. 

Located at 808 Eagle Point Rd. in Peach Springs, about 130 miles (209 km) from Las Vegas. 

Float the Colorado with a one-day, two-day or five-day paddling trip that includes camping on the banks. From $429 per person and available from mid-March to the end of October.  

Helicopter Tours

See the western portion of the Grand Canyon then land at the bottom to hike. Additionally you can reserve a pontoon boat ride on the Colorado River. 

Trips start at $399 per person. Located at 5001 Diamond Bar Rd., Peach Springs, helicopter tours depart from the Grand Canyon West Airport. 

Grand Canyon Caverns  

Explore the largest dry cavern in the U.S., 200 feet below the surface of the earth. Tours depart starting at 9:30 a.m. 

Rumors persist this cave is haunted . The one-hour-long Ghost Walk utilizes K2 meters to register paranormal activity. Departs nightly at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. depending on season.

Located at 115 mile marker on AZ-66 in Peach Springs, Arizona. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adult admission (12+) starts at $21.95 and kids (6 to 12) are $10.95.

Things to do in Flagstaff Arizona

Outdoor enthusiasts might want to use Flagstaff as their base in the Grand Canyon. It offers several smaller National Park Service sites and is the first official Dark Sky city.  

A mathematician opened the observatory in 1894 for solar system exploration. In 1930, the Lowell Observatory discovered Pluto. The Lowell Observatory is a National Historic Landmark. It’s home to the 24-inch (61-cm) Clark Refracting Telescope and the 13-inch (33-cm) Pluto Discovery Telescope. 

The Lowell Observatory offers several tours, such as its Lowell Tour or its Story of Pluto Tour. During the day, there are several specialized talks. Solar and night sky viewing is also available.

Located at 1400 W. Mars Hill Rd. Open daily from noon to 10 p.m. (6 p.m. on Tuesdays). Adult general admission is $29, students $19 and kids (5 -17) $17.

Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort 

On the western slope of Mt. Humphreys, find an all-season mountain resort on the tallest point in Arizona. Arizona Snowbowl offers 777 skiable acres with 55 runs from green to black. Find six aerial lifts, including a 6-person high-speed lift, along with two surface lifts. 

The ski season runs from late November until the end of April. The scenic chair lift transports hikers and mountain bikers from the summer through October for fall color. 

Located at 9300 North Snowbowl Rd, it is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lift tickets are required, and lessons and equipment rental are available onsite. 

See where a meteor crashed into the earth 50,000 years ago. It’s considered to be one of the best-preserved meteor impact craters in the world. The crater is 3,900 feet (1,200 m) across and 560 feet (170 m) deep and includes an interpretive center and rim tours. 

Located on Interstate 40 at Exit 233, Winslow. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adult admission (12+) is $29 and kids (6 to 12) are $20. 

See how people lived in the area from AD 600 to 1400. Along Island Trail, explore the 25 cliff dwellings of the Sinagua people. They farmed corn, squash, and beans below the cliff. 

The area became a national monument in 1915. The Civilian Conservation Corps stabilized the site in the 1930s as a part of President Roosevelt’s Works Progress program that put young men to work in parks across the U.S. 

Located on Interstate 40 at Exit 204, Flagstaff. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A 7-day private vehicle pass is $25 or use a NPS annual pass.

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument 

The area around Flagstaff is volcanic, including Mt. Humphreys. See a cinder cone along with lava fields. 

Located at 6082 Sunset Crater Rd.,Flagstaff. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  A 7-day private vehicle pass is $25 for neighboring Sunset Crater and Wapatki national monuments. 

Wupatki National Monument

Explore the ancient pueblos of the Wupatki that built multi-level structures 900 years ago, including the 104-room Wupatki Pueblo. Find several short hiking trails to explore partially preserved pueblos. 

Located at 25137 N. Wupatki Ln., Flagstaff. Open sunrise to sunset. A 7-day private vehicle pass is $25 for neighboring Sunset Crater and Wapatki national monuments.

How to get to grand canyon national park south rim.

Located north of east-west Interstate 40, Grand Canyon is a frequent road trip stop. Head north on Arizona Route 64 from Williams, AZ, to get to the South Rim Entrance, which is open 24 hours a day. 

Williams, AZ, offers Amtrak train service on the Southwest Chief line. Amtrak offers vacation packages including meals and tours of the South Rim. 

Las Vegas offers the largest international airport (LAS) in the Southwest. The Strip and the surrounding city offer dining, lodging, and entertainment options. Las Vegas is about 274 miles from the South Entrance.

Winter : Highs 40sF (8 to 9C), Lows mid 20sF (-4 to -2C)

Spring : Highs mid 50s to mid 70sF (15 to 25C), Lows low 30s to mid 40sF (0 to 8C)

Where to Stay near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon

The South Rim offers the most year-round services and attractions.

Tusayan– Located right outside the south entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. This town is one mile long, though it offers the most convenient lodging and dining outside of the Grand Canyon Village. Also, Tusayan is a base for many commercial tours and flightseeing operations.

Williams —Located along Interstate 40, Williams is a larger community than Tusayan and it’s 53 miles south of the South Rim Entrance. Additionally it’s the departure point for the Grand Canyon Railways.

Flagstaff —Located southeast of Grand Canyon National Park, this mountain destination offers easy access to the canyon along with the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and southern Utah. It’s 72 miles from the South Rim entrance.

Las Vegas —For air travelers, Las Vegas offers the most flights along with The Strip . It’s the closest city to the Grand Canyon SkyWalk on the western side of the Grand Canyon (not at the South Rim).

since you can see Grqnd Canyon in just one day

1) Hoover Dam

2) Oatman - wild burros

3) Route 66 Museum in Kingman, Arizona

4) Bearizonia in Williams ( I liked it as much as the national park itself)

Try to get a room inside every day, there are always some cancellations. If you are very unlucky then take a hotel at Tusayan. This is just outside the Nationalpark. Williams is too far away, you'd waste a lot of time with commuting in and out.

Did you also have a look at Yavapai Lodge ? It is also inside Grand Canyon Village , but not managed by the NP.

I would try and book something in Tusayan instead of Williams! Tusayan is right outside the South gates of the park thus limiting your travel time back and forth! Williams is over an hour away!

The later in the day you get to those gates the more backed up it will be. Try to get to and through the gates early!

We rushed through crowds at the visitor’s center to the rim of the canyon, where one of the natural wonders of the world spread before us like a stage.

Text description provided by the architects. The official grand opening of a special school, Letovo School , took place in Moscow last September. The assignment entailed a 20 hectare schoolcampus with educational facilities, student housing and school staff housing. The school campus offers extended outdoor sports facilities with a soccer stade, a running track, tennis courts and basketball courts. In addition there is a greenhouse, a treeyard and ample space for wandering and relaxation in the green.

While the architecture and interior of the school were designed by atelier PRO, the landscape design was developed by Buro Sant en Co landscape architecture. Russian firm Atrium Architectural Studio was responsible for the technical execution. In 2014 Atelier PRO had won the international design competition, the construction began mid-2016 and the campus was taken into use by mid-2018.

Letovo, a dream come true Letovo School is a special school for gifted and motivated children aged 12 to 17. The idea to create the school came from entrepreneur and philanthropist Vadim Moshkovich: ‘My dream was to offer talented children from all over the country access to high-quality education, regardless of their parents’ financial means. This school makes it possible for them to continue their studies at the 10 best universities in the country or at one of the top 50 universities in the world.’

Landscape-inspired design and shape Located in Novaya Moskva,southwest of Moscow ,the campus sits atop a beautiful plot of land that slopes down to a forest-lined river. Distinctive level variations were applied in and around the school to integrate the architecture into the landscape.

The shape of the large complex brings it down to a human scale for the children: the building appears to dance across the landscape due to its dynamic design. Due to the perspective effect one only ever sees part of the building's full size when walking around, which gives the impression of a refined scale. The building’s contours and flowing curves create surprising indoor and outdoor spaces as well.

The heart of the school: the central hub The central hub is the place where day-to-day life at the school unfolds. This flexible, transformable space will be used throughout the day as an informal meeting place. The dance studio on the ground floor can be transformed through a few simple adjustments into a theatre with a stage, a cosy living room or an auditorium that can accommodate 1,000 people for special events such as graduation ceremonies and large celebrations, as seen at the grand opening. This central hub connects the building’s three wings: the art wing, the south wing with science- and general-use rooms and the sports wing

Learning environment with a diversity in working spaces Letovo envisioned an innovative and modern take on existing education in Russia. In the spatial design, this perspective translates into space for theoretical education as well as special areas for group work and independent study in the tapered building wings. In the library wing there are silence spaces workshop spaces and a debating room. These are all supportive to the student’s personal development. 

Sports programme In addition to the extended sports outdoor facilities, the indoor supply of sports facilities is substantial. These cover fitness rooms, martial arts rooms, a swimming pool, a small and a large sports hall. Around the sports hall there’s an indoor running track which can be used throughout the year. It is available to school staff and external users as well.

The interior, also designed by atelier PRO, is tailored to the aims of the ambitious programme. The design of the interior also focuses extensively on the various spaces where students can go to chill and meet up with friends. The extreme cold in this area makes the school’s indoor atmosphere important for relaxation.

Ambitous learning environment The Russian client has established a private, non-profit school which aims to be the most prestigious school in the country and to offer the best educational programme through a Russion and an IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. Students’ personal development is paramount, with the school adopting a holistic approach. It is a true learning environment that provides scope for a range of disciplines, areas of interest and recreational opportunities to foster children’s development. This aim is supported by the campus facilities and functions.

Now and then: What Moscow looked like when it was rural (PHOTOS)

Moscow was not built at once - the ancient city is still expanding, annexing new villages and towns. In total, over 220 rural settlements became Moscow districts, but the exact number of them is hard to estimate. Active development of the outskirts started in 1960, when it became necessary to solve housing (many people lived in communal apartments) and traffic (with the construction of the Moscow Ring Road) problems. Then, Moscow, with its six million inhabitants, increased almost twice in size and its new districts filled up with panel houses , which defined the appearance of ANY residential area in Russia until recently. By the 1980s, when the number of official residents exceeded eight million, Moscow went beyond the Moscow Ring Road, joining the districts of Butovo, Zhulebino and others. And, in 2012, the 12 million-people strong Moscow increased by almost 2.5 times again, annexing several towns up to the border with Kaluga Region, thereby becoming Europe’s largest city. Today’s residential areas include lots of high-rises, shopping malls, parks and public sites. We’ve chosen seven villages to compare how they look - then and now.

Between 1960-1986, several neighboring villages became the new Konkovo district in the south-west of Moscow (where you will find subway stations Kaluzhskaya, Belyaevo and Konkovo) with its main highway, Profsoyuznaya Street. This is a very beautiful area, where you won’t find industrial territories; instead, there are lots of parks, hills and old churches. It’s a pleasure to walk around Konkovo! In old photos, you can see that while they were building panel houses, cows were still grazing around them. 

2. Kozhukhovo

This is one of the oldest villages in Moscow, which has been known since the 15th century and, since 1923, was included in Moscow. Kozhukhovo in the south-east of the city had its own railway station even in tsarist times, but the log houses remained here until the 1970s, when the area was finally surrounded by concrete buildings. 

3. Troparyovo

Troparyovo district in the southwest of the city was built on the site of the village, which became Moscow in 1960. The name came from its first ruler, boyar (a noble) Ivan Tropar (the word ‘tropar’ means a religious song in a church), who was buried here in 1393. During the Soviet years, there was a big kolkhoz (collective farm) with good transport connection, a school and a store. The last wooden houses were demolished in 1981. And, in 2014, a metro station was opened. 

4. Chertanovo

The former village of Chertanovo in the south of Moscow became its part in 1960. Besides a kolkhoz and other agricultural areas, in the 1940s-1960s, there was an airfield where you could learn to fly a glider. Then the village began to be built up with panel houses and the northern part of Chertanovo was even designed as a model neighborhood and considered a “Soviet paradise”, which could be shown to guests of the 1980 Olympic Games. 5. Cherkizovo

The old village of Cherkizovo-Podmoskovnye in the east of Moscow became part of the city in the early 20th century, but, until the 1970s, it still resembled a village with its wooden houses and gardens. Now, Cherkizovo is included in the Preobrazhenskoe District and the village’s name remains in the names of several streets and subway stations. You will also find the preserved Church of Elijah the Prophet, built in 1690. 

6. Cheryomushki

In 1956-1959, the village of Cheryomushki in the south-west of Moscow was the area of the first housing development made up of ‘Khrushchyovkas’ buildings. It became a part of Moscow in 1958. The experimental site consisted of 13 four-storey and seven eight-storey buildings. The pilot apartments were tiny, but facades were decorated with brick, the courtyards had real fountains and pergolas for plants and the development had its own stores, canteens and even a cinema. Today many old ‘Khrushchyovkas’ in this district are replaced with new multi-storey buildings with big apartments and modern infrastructure. 

7. Kuryanovo

If you wondered where the time stopped in Moscow, it’s in the village of Kuryanovo (in the southeast) that has been part of the city since 1960. Kuryanovo is bordered from the city by the railways and going there is like taking a little trip to the Soviet past. In this area, most residential buildings are still two-storeyed with many gardens in the backyards. And here’s a big Lenin’s monument in the center of the district. Locals like their neighborhood for its authenticity.

In 1960, the village of Vykhino in southeastern Moscow joined the city. The old settlement, together with the Lenin collective farm, was demolished and residents were moved from their log huts to modern panel houses. Today, Vykhino is one of the largest districts of Moscow, where more than 220,000 people live. 

9. Kommunarka

One of the main districts of so-called ‘New Moscow’ became the settelment  of Kommunarka in 2012. In Soviet times, there was a large sovkhoz, which fell into disrepair with the collapse of the USSR. Today, the main street of the area is named after the last sovkhoz head, Alexandra Monakhova. The district it is very actively built up - in a few years, here appeared about hundred new houses. A subway station opened there in 2019. 

10. Vatutinki

Vatutinki is another ‘New Moscow’ settlement, which joined Moscow in 2012. It’s as much as 17 kilometers to the MKAD (Moscow Ring Road). Before 2012, Vatutinki was the home to about 10,000 people and today, there are about 35,000 inhabitants. The population is constantly growing, moving into new houses.

The owners of these old wooden houses refused to sell when real estate developers moved in. Take a look at the last villages surrounded by concrete giants.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

One of the world’s largest cities, Moscow is a true metropolis whose ancient neighbourhoods are interspersed with newly built high-rises, inhabited by people from all over the former Soviet Union.

It’s also the city of rings: the innermost is the Kremlin itself; further away are the former defensive rings, Boulevard Ring and Garden Ring; still further are the Third Ring Road and the MKAD, which delineates the city’s borders. There’s an ongoing joke that Moscow Mayor is the Lord of the Rings. Most sights are contained within the Garden Ring, although for some more authentic neighbourhoods one has to venture further out. To help you explore Moscow’s diversity, we picked our favourite ’hoods – but this list is by no means exhaustive.

The Red Square and around

It can be argued that Moscow, or even the whole of Russia, starts at the  Red Square  – it’s an absolute must-see for any visitor. After standing in line to check out Lenin’s granite  mausoleum , go to GUM , Moscow's oldest department store. Full of luxury shops, it’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov. Apart from architectural wonders, GUM has several places to eat including the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 where you can sample mysterious-sounding delicacies such as the ‘herring in a fur coat’.

On the opposite side of GUM, Kremlin ’s walls and towers rise above the Red Square. Walk through the Alexander Garden  and past the grotto to the Kremlin’s entrance. It’s a treasure trove for any art and history lover: ancient gold-domed churches, icons galore and the resting place of Moscow tsars.

On the other side of the Red Square is Moscow's symbol,  St Basil's Cathedral with its multi-colored domes. Right behind it is the newly built Zaryadye Park , which showcases flora from all over Russia; another attraction is the floating bridge jutting out above the embankment and the Moscow river. A glass pavilion nearby hosts Voskhod , a space-themed restaurant with dishes from all 15 former Soviet Union republics. It’s a perfect spot for a classy evening meal and there’s often live music.

Patriarch’s Ponds

The Patriarch’s Ponds (aka Patriki) is a historical neighbourhood, celebrated in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita . Located right off Tverskaya street, Moscow’s main thoroughfare, Patriki recently became the city’s most happening quarter. It has some of the most elegant architecture, including several buildings by art-nouveau genius Fyodor Shekhtel. Narrow streets here have a cozy feel, with recently widened sidewalks and bike lanes. In the summer it becomes party central.

Start by checking out free exhibitions or one of the cutting-edge performances at the experimental theatre Praktika . But make no mistake, the neighbourhood’s main attraction are its bars and restaurants. Patriki’s residents are well-off Russians and expats, so it’s no wonder that  Moscow’s recent culinary revolution started here. Uilliam’s , one of the pioneers of this foodie movement, still rules over the scene with its floor-to-ceiling windows. Also try AQ Chicken  for everything chicken-related, Patara  for a taste of Georgian cuisine, and Cutfish for some great sushi. Finish your gastronomic tour with original cocktails at Pinch or the Moscow outpost of NYC restaurant Saxon+Parole .

Around Kursky train station

For a long time, Kursky train station was surrounded by semi-abandoned factories and the area was best avoided. It all changed in the late 2000s, when a dilapidated wine factory was turned into Winzavod , a mecca for fans of contemporary art. Today these red-brick buildings are occupied by some of Moscow’s leading galleries. After taking in all the art, pop in the small wine bar Barrell  for a glass from burgeoning wineries of Russia’s south or grab a bite at Khitrye Lyudi  cafe.

Right next to Winzavod is Artplay , another refurbished factory full of design and furniture shops and large exhibition spaces.  It’s also home to  Pluton , one of the latest additions to Moscow’s dance scene. Other Pluton residents are the multimedia art gallery Proun  and another lunch option,  Shanhaika , with authentic Chinese cuisine.

A short walk away is Arma, where a cluster of circular gas holders has been turned into offices, restaurants and clubs including Gazgolder  (it belongs to one of Russia’s most famous rappers, Basta). Apart from hip-hop concerts, Gazgolder organises regular techno parties that sometimes go non-stop from Friday to Monday.

If you’re interested in religious architecture, Taganka is the place to go. First of all, see the old Moscow at Krutitskoye Podvorye – one of those places where nothing seems to have changed in centuries. The monastery was founded in the 13th century, but in the 16th century it became the home of Moscow metropolitans and most of the surviving buildings are from that epoch. Take a tour of the grounds, and don’t miss the interior and icons of the Assumption Cathedral.

Your next stop is the Rogozhskoe settlement of ‘old believers’, a branch that split from Russian Orthodoxy in the 17th century. The settlement is dominated by an 80m-tall bell tower. The yellow-coloured Intercession Church, built in neoclassical style with baroque elements, has an important collection of icons. Next to the church grounds is the popular Trapeznaya cafeteria, with Russian food cooked using traditional recipes – a perfect spot for lunch.

A short ride away is Andronikov Monastery, which today houses the Rublyov Museum  in the old monks’ quarters. There’s a great collection of ancient Orthodox icons although none by Andrei Rublyov, who was a monk here in the 15th century. The main attraction at the monastery is the small Saviour’s Cathedral, considered the oldest surviving church in Moscow.

Finish the day at the craft-beer cluster around Taganskaya metro station. Varka offers both Russian and imported labels, with the Burger Heroes stand serving arguably the best burgers in town. Craft & Draft looks more like a respectable old-fashioned pub, with decent food, 20 beers on tap and a hundred types of bottled brews.

Khamovniki is Moscow’s ancient textile district, named after the word kham  (a type of cloth). Two main thoroughfares, Ostozhenka and Prechistenka, cut through the neighbourhood parallel to each other. The former turned into the so-called ‘Golden Mile’ of Moscow in the 1990s, with the highest real-estate prices and some of the best examples of new Russian architecture, while the latter is still mostly lined up with impressive 19th-century mansions.

Khamovniki is somewhat of a literary quarter, as several museums devoted to Russia’s best-known writers – among them  Leo Tolstoy , Alexander Pushkin  and Ivan Turgenev – popped up here during the last century. There’s also plenty to see for an art lover. The  Multimedia Art Museum regularly hosts exhibitions by some of the best photographers from all over the world, as well as contemporary art. Several galleries, including RuArts  and Kournikova Gallery , have also found home in Khamovniki.

When you’ve had your fill of literature and art, stop by Gorod Sad on Ostozhenka, an outpost of a local health-food chain, and order dishes such as pumpkin soup or grilled vegetables salads. Afterwards, head to Dom 12 , which is located just off Ostozhenka street. This restaurant and wine bar is frequented by the city’s intellectuals and its schedule includes lectures, book presentations and film screenings, while in the summer guests migrate to a lovely courtyard.

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river. 

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

• East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
• Completed in 2017
• Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

• South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

• 339m tall, 75 floors
• Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

• Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
• Completed in 2009
• Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

• Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
• Completed in 2007
• Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

• 255m tall, 54 floors
• Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

• Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

What’s nearby?

Sechenov Botanical Gardens: The botanical gardens of the First Moscow State Medical University was created for students’ training and research in 1946. Today it is open for free visits, and is home to a large arboretum.

Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.
