Uttarakhand, bordered by Nepal and Tibet, and shadowed by towering Himalayan peaks, is full of unspoiled natural beauty. It's divided into two regions—Garhwal in the north, and Kumaon in the south. Ancient holy places, mountains, forests and valleys, and an abundance of trekking options are some of the attractions that make travel to Uttarakhand worthwhile. Uttarakhand is also an excellent place to get off the beaten track. If you're looking for fresh air and tranquility, you'll love some of these boutique Himalayan getaways .

Jim Corbett National Park

One of India's most popular national parks , Jim Corbett National Park is named after hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. It has dense forest and an array of wildlife, although tiger sightings aren't as common as some other places in India. The park can be explored by jeep or elephant safaris, which take place daily in the early mornings and afternoons. The Dhikala zone of the park is the most panoramic, with stunning valley views. It offers the best chance of animal sightings (which are unfortunately sometimes disappointing). If you're lucky, you might spot wild elephants.

Ancient Haridwar (the "Gateway to God") is one of the seven holiest places in India, and one of the oldest living cities. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, it's particularly popular with Hindu pilgrims who come to take a dip in the holy waters of the fast flowing Ganges River and wash away their sins. The evening Ganga Aarti holds a special appeal.

Rishikesh, located not far from Haridwar, is as popular with western spiritual seekers as Haridwar is with Hindu pilgrims. Known as the birthplace of yoga, people flock there to meditate, do yoga, and learn about other aspects of Hinduism in the various ashrams and yoga institutes. Despite the growing number of visitors, the town's lanes and alleys retain an old-world charm. It remains a wonderful place to relax and unwind among nature.

  • Location: 40 minutes drive northeast of Haridwar.

The hill settlement of Nainital, in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, was a popular summer retreat for the British during the time they ruled India. It features emerald colored Nainital (Naini) Lake and an action-filled strip called The Mall, lined with restaurants, shops, hotels, and markets. Enjoy one of the many forest walks, explore the surrounding area on horseback, or relax on a boat in the lake. This destination gets very crowded during summers, especially on weekends, due to its proximity to Delhi. Around Nainital, you'll find Jeolikote, Bhimtal, Ramgarh and Mukteshwar which are all less developed and quieter places to stay.

  • Location: About 6.5 hours drive east of Delhi.

Mussoorie is another popular weekend destination for north Indians, as well as honeymooners. One of the main reasons for this is because it has a lot of facilities developed especially for tourists. Take a cable car to Gun Hill, enjoy a beautiful nature walk along Camel's Back Road, have a picnic at Kempty Falls, or ride a horse up to Lal Tibba (the highest peak in Mussoorie). Mussoorie also offers a superb view of the Himalayas. If you're looking for a quieter alternative nearby, check out Landour.

  • Location: About six hours drive north of Delhi and an hour from Dehradun (Uttarakhand's capital). IRCTC offers a convenient two-night weekend rail tour package from Delhi to Mussoorie.

Almora, now the capital of the Kumaon region, was established as the summer capital of Chand kings in 1560. It attracts its share of foreigners who head to nearby Kasar Devi Temple, where Swami Vivekananda meditated. There are some chilled out places to stay in the area, such as Kasar Rainbow Resort and Mohan's Binsar Retreat,  as well as inexpensive guesthouses with private cottages just outside Almora town. Around Almora, you'll find the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kausani (where Gandhi spent time writing his  Bhagavad Gita  treatise), Ranikhet and the Jageshwar temple complex.

  • Location: About nine hours drive northeast of Delhi.

Valley of Flowers National Park

The remarkable landscape of The Valley of Flowers National Park in the Garhwal region comes alive with the monsoon rain. This high-altitude Himalayan valley has around 300 different varieties of alpine flowers, which appear as a bright carpet of color against a mountainous snow-capped background. It's a popular trekking destination, open from the start of June until the end of October.

  • Location: About 15 hours drive northeast of Delhi, plus a trek.

Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the Char Dham (four temples) mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath ). Hindus consider a pilgrimage to the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, but it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death.

Uttarakhand even has a skiing destination! Auli lies on the way to Badrinath and has a three-kilometer long slope, gondola, chairlift, and Poma ski lift. For skiing, conditions are best from the last week of January to the first week of March. However, it's dependent on good snowfall, which is variable. If you're into trekking, the Kuari Pass trailhead is at Auli. This trek, which passes through Nanda Devi National Park, is one of the state's best and most accessible. Thrillophilia offers six-day guided trips from Haridwar . There are many other hiking trails around too.

Accommodation options in Auli are scarce but Devi Darshan Lodge is recommended if you don't stay at the popular government-run Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Hotel (which offers ski programs). Alternatively, the Himalayan Abode Homestay near Joshimath is excellent, and the host is a skiing and snowboarding champion and coach. Another good option is Himalayan Eco Lodge .

  • Location: About 13 hours drive northeast of Delhi, near Joshimath.

Magical Munsiyari, a small town surrounded by towering mountains in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, is paradise for mountaineers and trekkers. Blazing sunsets create a stunning backdrop of color-stained peaks there. However, the hiking and trekking routes are the biggest draws. Munsiyari is the base for the challenging nine-day Milam Glacier Trek , and the much easier two- to three-hour trek to Khalia Top is another attraction. The Tribal Heritage Museum, filled with artifacts from Munsiyari's trade with Tibet on the ancient salt route, is also worth seeing. Milam Inn , albeit basic, is the best place to stay in Munsiyari and it offers fabulous mountain views from the guest rooms.

  • Location: About 16 hours drive northeast of Delhi.

Not to be confused with the Chopta Valley in Sikkim, Chopta lies between Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, at the entry to Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. It attracts travelers who want to enjoy the great outdoors away from the crowds and development. Chopta is the starting point for treks to Tungnath temple (open from June to September) and Chandrashila summit. It's a short, yet scenic, moderate trek that can be completed in a day. Notably, the temple is the world's highest Shiva temple. Thrillophilia offers four-day guided trips from Haridwar.

  • Location: About 10 hours drive northeast of Delhi, via Rishikesh.

It's likely that you've never heard of Kalap, a tiny remote village that's only accessible by foot, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. That's because it's totally off the tourist map. A responsible tourism project was established there in 2013 to help improve the livelihoods of the villagers. Kalap is an outstanding place to get away from it all and experience the simplicity of village life or go trekking along trails followed by nomadic shepherds.

  • Location: About six hours north of Dehradun in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand, aptly called Devbhoomi, where spirituality abounds!

Rightly called Devbhoomi, meaning, the land of the gods, Uttarakhand is where the spiritual aura is prominent. The state is home to a large number of Hindu temples that are situated in its remote corners. There are several holy rivers like the River Ganga which make it a sacred pilgrimage destination as well. Haridwar is one of the top pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand and serves as the Gateway to the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. Har Ki Pauri is a major religious attraction in Uttarakhand.

The Kumbh Mela is held in Haridwar in Uttarakhand once every 12 years. The state is also home to the Panch Badri, Panch Kedar and Panch Prayag. Each of these places are also associated with the mythologies in Hinduism, and hence, are extremely significant spiritually for the Hindus. These religious places are also blessed with spectacular natural beauty, so you can also enjoy the surreal beauty of Uttarakhand along with a spiritual experience.

Panch Badri is a total of 5 holy places where Lord Badri, a form of Lord Vishnu is worshipped under 5 different names, which are: Vishal Badri (Badrinath), Yogdhan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Vridha Badri and Adi Badri. All of these religious destinations are visited by a large number of devotees of Lord Vishnu from all across the country. Badrinath Temple is the main temple of Lord Vishnu, and is one of the four Chota Char Dham pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. It is situated at an elevation of almost 10,279 feet. The presiding deity is Lord Vishnu, who has a black granite statue in the temple. The deity is believed by Hindus to be one of the eight self manifested deities of Lord Vishnu.

Panch Kedar, which comprises five temples, are located in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, and all of them are major pilgrimage destinations. The five temples are Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar. The Kedarnath Temple is also a Jyotirlingas and is the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. All of the religious places in Panch Kedar are dedicated to Lord Shiva, and attract devotees of Lord Shiva as well as other tourists from all over the country. There are also mentioned in several mythologies in Hinduism, one of which links their origins to the Pandavas, the heroes of the Indian epic, Mahabharata.

Uttarakhand is also the holy land of Panch Prayag, which refers to the Five Confluences which occur at Vishnu Prayag, Nanda Prayag, Karn Prayag, Devprayag and Rudraprayag, to form the River Ganga. The Panch Prayag is respected by millions of Hindus because it is one of the holiest confluences in India, after Allahabad. It is believed that taking a dip in the confluences cleanses the body, mind and spirit, and takes an individual closer to mukti or liberation.

The famous Char Dham Yatra is a major pilgrimage for Hindus in Uttarakhand. The Char Dham refers to the four pilgrimage destinations, which are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. It starts from Yamunotri, then proceeds to Gangotri and Kedarnath and finally ends at Badrinath. The state is also home to Sikh pilgrimage destinations like Hemkund Sahib, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and is the highest gurudwara in India.

Uttarakhand Tourism & Travel Guide

Carved out with 14 hilly districts of former Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand is the 26th state of the Indian union. The state is rich in flora and fauna, natural and touristic ambiance, and houses some of the most important pilgrimage centers in the country. Uttarakhand tourism offers an opportunity to explore the breathtaking beauty of its natural splendor, grand in its wild denizens, and simplicity in its people, the region is a unique experience to your senses. Here take a look at the Uttarakhand travel guide, which will give you a brief about the state which will help you to plan the Uttarakhand trip.

Uttarakhand is a part of the Western Himalayan ranges starting from the Shivalik foothills to Greater Himalayas with Tibet as its northeastern border. In the northwestern corner of the state is Himachal Pradesh , while Haryana celebrates its union with the newly formed state with a gentle kiss. The state is surrounded by Uttar Pradesh from most of its western and southern boundaries. Apart from the Terai region in the Shivalik foothills, the entire state of Uttarakhand is a part of the Himalayan ranges. At 7,817 m above sea level, Nanda Devi in the district of Chamoli is the highest point in the state. The region has many glaciers, passes, meadows, and trekking routes with several major rivers like the Ganga and Yamuna originating from here. A major part of this Himalayan state comes under rainforests and alpine forests that are home to some of the highly endangered wildlife species.

Uttarakhand is an amalgamation of the two hilly divisions of former Uttar Pradesh, Kumaon and Garhwal, the regions that are known according to Hindu legends as Devabhoomi (land of the gods). Both the divisions, though they are spelled in the same breath, show sufficient diversity in their history, culture, and ethnicity so much so that they are often considered separately. The Garhwal Himalayas have nurtured civilization from the wee hours of history. It appears to have been a favorite locale for the voluminous mythology of the Puranic period. The traditional name of Garhwal was Uttarakhand and excavations have revealed that it formed part of the Mauryan Empire. It also finds mention in the 7th-century travelogue of Huen Tsang. However, it is with Adi Shankaracharya that the name of Garhwal will always be linked, for the great 8th-century spiritual reformer visited the remote, snow-laden heights of Garhwal, established a Math (Joshimath) and resorted some of the most sacred shrines, including Badrinath and Kedarnath. With the Uttarakhand tour guide, you get a deep insight into the history of Garhwal which began in the 15th century when King Ajai Pal merged the 52 separate principalities, each with its Garh or fortress. For 300 years, Garhwal remained one kingdom, with its capital at Srinagar (not to be confused with the capital of Kashmir). Then Pauri and Dehradun were perforce ceded to the Crown as payment for British help, rendered to the Garhwalis during the Gurkha invasion, in the early 19th century. Humankind has been around in Kumaon for a very long time. Evidence of Stone Age settlements has been found in Kumaon, particularly the rock shelter at Lakhu Udyar. The paintings here date back to the Mesolithic period. The early medieval history of Kumaon is the history of the Katyuri dynasty. The Katyuri kings ruled from the seventh to the 11th century, holding sway at the peak of their powers over large areas of Kumaon, Garhwal, and western Nepal. The town of Baijnath near Almora was the capital of this dynasty and a center of the arts. Temple building flourished under the Katyuris and the main architectural innovation introduced by them was the replacement of bricks with hewn stone. On a hilltop facing east (opposite Almora), is the temple of Katarmal. This 900-year-old sun temple was built during the declining years of the Katyuri dynasty. The intricately carved doors and panels have been removed to the National Museum in Delhi as a protective measure after the 10th-century idol of the presiding deity was stolen. After an interregnum of a couple of centuries, the Chands of Pithoragarh became the dominant dynasty. The magnificent temple complex at Jageshwar, with its cluster of a hundred and sixty-four temples, was built by the Chand rulers over two centuries. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the evocative carvings are complemented by the beautiful cedar forest around it.

Fairs & Festivals of Uttarakhand

The major fairs and festivals of the Garhwal region are Hatkalika Fair, Tapkeshwar Fair, Surkhanda Devi Mela, Kunjapuri Fair, Lakhawar Village Fair, and Mata Murti Ka Mela. Kumaon celebrates fairs and festivals like Uttarayani Mela, Shravan Mela (Jageshwar), Kartik Poornima at Dwarahat, Kasar Devi fair, and Nanda Devi Mela. International Yoga festival is a popular new addition to the festivals in Uttarakhand celebrated annually. With the Uttarakhand tour, plan you will get an opportunity to take part in the festivals and get to know about the culture of the region.

Uttarakhand launches first-ever helicopter yatra for Adi Kailash, Om Parvat in big boost to religious tourism

Earlier, reaching these holy sites involved a challenging journey - either a long trek or a combination of car travel and walking, confined to a limited window between may and june or september and october..

Anurag Roushan

Pilgrims embarked on inaugural helicopter flight

Traditionally, reaching these sacred sites has been a challenging endeavour, involving either a lengthy trek or a combination of car travel and walking, restricted to specific time frames between May and June or September and October. Today, marking a milestone, 18 pilgrims embarked on the inaugural helicopter flight, signalling a new era of accessibility championed by Trip to Temples.

Adi Kailash, situated in the magnificent Vyas Valley, holds great significance as the second abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Om Parvat, bordering India, Nepal, and Tibet, stands as a natural wonder, sculpted into a perfect "Om" symbol. Previously, the closest vantage point to view Om Parvat was Nabhidang, located 11 km from the Old Lipu Lekh Pass, necessitating a challenging trek.

How will it help devotees?

Trip to Temples, in collaboration with UTDB, has revolutionized the pilgrimage experience. Devotees can now embark on a one-day aerial darshan of both sites, returning the same day which is launched today. From April 15th, a five-day helicopter yatra will commence, with helicopters landing near the holy sites, minimizing walking distances and departing conveniently from Pithoragarh.

Vikas Mishra, CEO of Trip to Temples, expressed unwavering dedication to enhancing accessibility: "We are committed to partnering with the Uttarakhand government to make Hindu pilgrimage destinations more accessible in the region. We continuously explore ways to extend this accessibility for more time period, allowing more devotees to fulfil their spiritual aspirations."

29-year-old Byasdev Rana, a participant from Odisha on the inaugural yatra, described the experience as awe-inspiring. Time and physical limitations had previously hindered his ability to connect with this vital aspect of his faith. Thanks to Trip to Temples and the Uttarakhand government's initiative, he, like countless others, can finally have the darshan of Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.

The upcoming yatra to start on April 15

This upcoming winter yatra will be India's first, offering a mesmerizing view of the snow-covered Vyas Valley, Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) will replace the strenuous trek from Jyolingkong and Nabhidang, ensuring a comfortable journey through the snowy landscape. The yatra will be open from April 15th to May 1st, 2024, and will resume in November, extending its reach until March.

This revolutionary helicopter yatra, spearheaded by Trip to Temples, promises to transform the pilgrimage experience for Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. With breathtaking aerial views, comfortable travel options, and a focus on community development, UTDB and Trip to Temples are ushering in a new era for Hindu pilgrimage tourism in India.

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) aimed for 300 hotels by 2025-26. But the parent company of Taj Hotels reached this goal two years early. The hotel group now has 309 hotels by the end of the 2023-24 financial year.

IHCL has aggressively expanded its footprint with 52 hotel signings and 34 openings last year, a significant increase from its 2022 numbers.

A significant contributor to the increased numbers during 2023 has been the partnership that IHCL has signed with Tree of Life Resorts & Hotels. Under the agreement, the company is offering its marketing and distribution network to the 14 properties of Tree of Life.

IHCL has also ventured in East and Northeast India, with properties in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal.

The hotel group has also been focusing on large-format airport hotels. Its leisure and spiritual destination offerings also received a boost, with hotels signings in Bekal, Alibaug, Ayodhya and Haridwar.

The company is betting big on its budget brand Ginger. It is the second-largest hotel brand under IHCL, after Taj. While Taj has 109 hotels in its portfolio, there are 90 hotels under the Ginger brand. In November last year, executive vice president (new businesses and hotel openings) Deepika Rao stated that IHCL was looking to have 86 operational hotels under the budget brand by the end of 2025-26 financial year. It currently has 64.

It is also planning to bring a full-service brand in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to tap the mass market outside Indian metro cities.

Rao said that the company’s expansion will increase domestically over the coming few years while it will foray into “select international markets.”

IHCL is also eyeing international expansion with new projects coming up in Dhaka, Bhutan, Nepal, and Frankfurt.

The openings and signings in 2023 across the various IHCL brands include:

The company signed 12 hotels under the luxury Taj brand. These include a 400-key airport at the Delhi International Airport, a 350-room hotel in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a hotel in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and two properties in Bhutan.

Five Taj hotels were also opened:

  • Taj Sewai, Ranthambore in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan
  • Taj Taal Kutir in New Town, West Bengal
  • Taj Guras Kutir Resort & Spa in Gangtok, Sikkim
  • Taj The Trees, Mumbai in Maharashtra
  • Taj Gandhinagar Resort & Spa in Gandhinagar, Gujarat

The company now has 84 hotels operating under the Taj brand with 25 properties in the pipeline.

IHCL currently has 26 operational SeleQtion properties and 14 more under development. In 2023-24, 10 SeleQtion hotels were signed, including a 175-key hotel in Surat, Gujarat, a property in Bandra, Mumbai, a hotel in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, and an 88-room resort in Naukuchiatal, Uttarakhand.

The six openings are:

  • Scenic Munnar in Munnar, Kerala
  • Ekante Bliss in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh
  • Gorbandh Palace in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
  • WOW Crest in Indore, Madhya Pradesh
  • The Crown in Bhubaneswar, Odisha
  • The Yellow House in Anjuna, Goa

In 2023-24, IHCL maintained the momentum of 2022-23 with regard to the upscale Vivanta brand. While in the 2022-23 financial year, IHCL signed nine hotels under the Vivanta brand, the 2024 financial year saw this number increasing marginally to 10. These include hotels in Talegaon, Pune; Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh; Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh; and Haridwar, Uttarakhand during the period.

Like the year before, three Vivanta hotels also opened the 2024 financial year, of which two are located in India, and one in Nepal.

  • Vivanta Chitwan in Bharatpur, Nepal
  • Vivanta Arunachal Pradesh in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh
  • Vivanta Jammu, City Centre in Jammu and Kashmir

The company currently operates 30 Vivanta hotels with 26 in the pipeline.

With 64 Ginger hotels currently operational, IHCL signed six Ginger hotels in 2023-24, including a 300-key hotel at Goa’s new Manohar International Airport (MOPA), and one in Dibrugarh, Assam. With this there are 26 Ginger hotels in the pipeline.

The six Ginger hotel opening during this period were:

  • Ginger Durgapur in Durgapur, West Bengal
  • Ginger Mumbai Airport in Mumbai, Maharashtra
  • Ginger Gangtok, Bojoghari in Gangtok, Sikkim
  • Ginger Noida, Sector 133 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh
  • Ginger Kochi, MG Road in Kochi, Kerala
  • Ginger Ahmedabad in Changodar, Gujarat
