Q&A: Current Joys shifts into hyperpop mania in ‘LOVE + POP’

Since the release of his debut solo album “Wild Heart” in 2013, Nick Rattigan — also known as Current Joys — has cemented himself in the hearts and playlists of angsty, brooding teenagers everywhere. Originally from Reno, Nevada, Rattigan is also the drummer and lead singer of Surf Curse, a band that achieved mainstream success for tracks like “Freaks” that experienced TikTok virality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rattigan’s love for cinema plays a massive role in his creative process, leading much of his music in the past few years to have a distinct, lo-fi, indie-rock sound with evocative sonic imagery.

A decade later, with the release of his solo project “LOVE + POP” this summer, Rattigan’s music still has the same cinematic quality but with an entirely different musical style. His new, highly collaborative album experiments with a manic fusion of trap, hip-hop and hyperpop, inspired by the likes of 100 gecs, Lil Peep and Drain Gang.

WSN sat down with Rattigan before his show at (Le) Poisson Rouge on Nov. 8 to talk about his upcoming slew of international shows, the inspiration behind “LOVE + POP” and projects in the works that fans can look forward to, including a possible rock opera.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

WSN: So, it’s your second show in New York City. How was your show last night?

Rattigan: It was amazing. This club, (Le) Poisson Rouge, is really cool. The first time I was at this venue, I saw Skrillex and Fred again.. DJ here, and it was one of the coolest nights ever. So when it came up that we could play here, I was like, “Oh my God, that’s the Skrillex place.” Like, that’d be incredible. The speaker system is really good. I love the West Village, but it’s kind of weird to be playing a show here — seeing as it’s not, like, the Comedy Cellar or something.

WSN: Is there any location that you’re particularly looking forward to playing at on your current tour?

Rattigan: I was really looking forward to tonight’s show. I think the shows in Europe — Berlin, Paris and London — will be cool too. I’ve never had a band over there. These will all definitely be weird shows because I’ll be playing “LOVE + POP” for the first time. Most of the set uses backing tracks, and we’re just playing on top of it, Death Grips-style. I think I’m just looking forward to bringing it to these different places and just being like, “Here’s something that isn’t your typical, run-of-the-mill Current Joys show.”

WSN: Speaking of “LOVE + POP,” what are three words that you would use to describe the album?

Rattigan: I’ll say green. Neon green — that’s two words. Damn it.

WSN: Don’t worry, we can hyphenate it.

Rattigan: Neon-green, insanity and hip-hop.

WSN: How do you think “LOVE + POP” fits into the rest of your body of work? Is it something completely independent, or a continuation of something touched on in your previous work?

Rattigan: I think it’s a continuation for sure. I did it in the same way I do all my other records, which is at home in my studio, just sort of fishing around and using the tools that I have at hand. When I made “Wild Heart” 10 years ago, I just had a bunch of shitty tools and I didn’t know how to produce anything. Now, with “LOVE + POP,” I’m making music with all these tools like Ableton, Omnisphere and all these crazy sorts of things where I can do lots of weird stuff with the production. But I still think “LOVE + POP” was very organic. To me, it feels like it fits the book, but maybe not to other people.

There’s one song, “I feel truth inside of u,” that I wanted to make super reminiscent of Current Joys back in 2018. My friend sent me some demos that we recorded in that time period, so I decided to sample one of my old demos, slow it down and put drums on top of it. The whole work feels like it’s in conversation with my past work. It’s just much more abrasive.

WSN: At what point during the conception of “LOVE + POP” did you decide to make such a drastic stylistic shift? I remember reading that the Lil Peep documentary, “Everybody’s Everything,” had a massive influence on you.

Rattigan: Yes — the documentary is just incredible. First off, it’s produced by Terrence Malick, which is the craziest credit that you’d never expect. I didn’t know anything about Lil Peep before seeing it. My friend told me to watch it, so I watched the documentary, and I ended up watching it three times in one day. I became obsessed with Lil Peep — I think he’s our Kurt Cobain.

I knew that I wanted to make music inspired by him and see what it would be like. I was also listening to a lot of Drain Gang and all these other modern artists where the production style is so different and out there. I feel like that’s why people like it, because it’s refreshing and new. I’ve gotten tired over my years of just doing a specific genre, like indie rock. It was just fun to make that shift. I don’t even think it was a conscious thing. It just all happened so naturally and organically — which, ironically, resulted in me making something that sounds very inorganic.

WSN: Do you have any dream collaborations that you want to put into motion?

Rattigan: Yes. Oh my God, definitely. Skrillex, please remix one of my songs. Oh my God. Sample something. He’s the best.

WSN: Do you have any projects in the works right now that you can tell us about? You mentioned once on Reddit that you were working on a rock opera.

Rattigan: I’m working on a rock opera, but it’s very much in the works. It’s probably my least developed project that I have right now. I have a folk-country album that I made two years ago. That’s actually what I was working on and planning on releasing until, very randomly, “LOVE + POP,” just came out of me. I even had like a total of 32 songs for “LOVE + POP” that I cut down to 12, so I have a whole other second part that I could release. There’s a lot of stuff floating around. But the rock opera is definitely the one that’s the most ambitious.

WSN: What can you tell us about your rock opera? When did you start developing it?

Rattigan: Back in 2021, I think. I have 10 songs right now that are super theatrical — I was listening to a lot of Meat Loaf at the time. I just still need to connect all the songs together. Right now, they’re all in their own universe. I can say that the name of the musical is “All of Falling October.” That part is definite.

WSN: Last question — since you mention Deftones on “LOVE + POP,” what’s your favorite Deftones song?

Rattigan: On tour with Surf Curse a few years ago, Jacob Rubeck was throwing on all these Deftones live videos. They were so intense. He goes so hard, gets in the crowd and screams in people’s faces. There’s one live video for “My Own Summer (Shove It)” that was so good, I would listen to it all the time. That’s probably my favorite.

Artist on Artist: Current Joys Chats to YOUR ANGEL About Lil Yachty, TikTok and New Album ‘LOVE + POP’

Nick Rattigan went back to basics on LOVE + POP, his latest record under the Current Joys moniker. In contrast to 2021’s more polished Voyager , the new album was home-recorded and self-produced, making it more akin to the project’s earliest releases from a decade ago.

Rattigan asked various friends to contribute to the album, including Jackson Katz, aka Brutus VII , and Maddy Boyd , aka YOUR ANGEL, both former members of the Current Joys live band.

Current Joys – ‘LOVE + POP’

LOVE + POP is out now via Secretly Canadian, and to coincide with its release, Rattigan and Boyd spoke to each other about collaborating, the changing nature of music distribution and Lil Yachty’s guest appearance on the album track ‘Gatsby’.

YOUR ANGEL: I think I should ask you a question first.

Current Joys: I only wrote two questions. I should have written more.

YA: You can just do them off the dome.

CJ: Yeah, let’s do them off the dome.

YA: How did this project, LOVE + POP , begin for you?

CJ: Well, I watched the Lil Peep documentary after a very chaotic party that I threw at my house. All of Los Angeles was there and they destroyed my house. In the midst of trying to clean my house, I put my television next to my bed and I watched the Lil Peep doc. I had not been that inspired by anything in so long.

I decided to do a cover of one of his songs and for the cover I knew I couldn’t rap over it, so I decided to get someone else to do it and then I hit you up – my frequent collaborator.

I was listening back to the song a hundred times as you do when you record a song. I was like, “This song is okay but the Maddy part is so sick.” I wanted to write another song and have you do a sort of rapping flow again. So I wrote ‘LOVE + POP’. We got together and started making that and then you texted me saying, “I feel like a whole record of this would be great”.

That planted the seed in my head and I spent a month making a song every day and sending you a song every day. I wondered if I was annoying you. Was it annoying that I was sending you songs every day?

YA: Honestly, it wasn’t because Jackson [Katz, Brutus VII] and I, for probably a year now, had had multiple conversations about it. You were always saying you felt like everyone really loved your old bedroom pop shit and maybe you should just do that again. We thought, “Damn that would be a good idea,” plus you were super into 100 gecs and electronic music.

I remember one specific time, Jackson and I went to Sweetgreen and were like, “Dude it would be so sick if Nick made another album in his bedroom but added 808s and more electronic production.”

CJ: Did you guys predict the record?

YA: Yes, we’ve been talking about this for a year. That’s why I told you to keep doing this. It makes sense to have old school Current Joys with low-key, modern electronic production.

CJ: That’s crazy you predicted this record at a Sweetgreen and I didn’t see it coming until it was done.

YA: I kept saying I was going to talk to you about it and I never did then you sent me that song and I thought, “Oh my god. It’s happening!”

Current Joys – ‘CIGARETTES’

CJ: You and Jackson were my biggest cheerleaders on this record. I don’t know if I could have done it without you guys.

YA: It was so fun. I feel like there’s been a lot of distance, time-wise, between all of us touring together and it felt weirdly nostalgic and serendipitous. Our relationship started by making music together so it felt very pure and fun. So, no, it was not annoying.

CJ: That’s so sweet. The band was back together. It was a very different vibe than making Voyager though.

YA: Very different vibe. I guess the band is somewhat back together – you and Jackson are playing live together in the new Current Joys set.

CJ: You should see the new set, it’s crazy.

YA: I want to see it so bad. Another question – why did you send Lil Yachty the recording of the song ‘Gatsby’?

CJ: Here’s the story – I got a hold of Lil Yachty and he wanted to hear the song. He told me to send it and you wanted to come over and beef it up to make it sound better. You said I can’t just send this shitty sounding song to Lil Yachty, but I got really stoned and anxious and just sent it to him anyway. Simple as that.

A week went by and then I followed up with him and he said he loved it. Another week went by and then he sent me the track back with a verse over it.

YA: He’s so real for doing that.

CJ: Jackson and I got a little greedy and sent him three more songs. He didn’t reply to any of those, which is okay and understandable. Jackson ended up doing the part on “Rock n Roll Dreams’ but we changed it so it wasn’t rapping.

YA: It doesn’t really sound like he’s rapping at all. It’s very Brutus VIII. Do you think you’ll ever release the other version of ‘Gatsby’ we made? We called it the ‘Dance Dance Revolution’ version.

CJ: You came over to beef up the track but then we made another version and we were like this is the DDR version. Altogether on the album, there were 30 songs and I cut it down to 10. I was thinking I would make a part two.

CJ: Leading up to the release, you said you felt like the fans would really fuck with this. What do you have to say to the people who really don’t fuck with it at all, who say it’s not “Current Joys”?

YA: If you expect somebody to make the same music that they were making 10 years ago you’re an idiot. If artists don’t evolve, they’re shitty artists. You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. If you were making the same music you used to, people would have something to say about that too.

CJ: I don’t even think I could.

YA: I find it so ignorant for people to expect you to make the same music you did in college.

CJ: Maybe you would expect this record to be the one I made in college as opposed to now. Haha.

YA: I think this record is the most similar to your older music which is so funny.

CJ: That’s what I’m so surprised about. It’s super lo-fi home recording. They’re going to really freak out when the country album comes out.

YA: Yeah! You can’t please everyone. Sometimes music fans feel entitled in a way that’s not fair. I think if you’re not evolving in a way, you’re not a good artist.

YA: Period. What do you feel the difference was in making this record as opposed to say Voyager ? Especially because Voyager was such a collaborative record as well?

CJ: We were both there for the making of both of them. It’s literally the polar opposite. What was awesome about this record was I was listening to so much music and a lot of music now feels like production is what makes it interesting. You can do so many things with production now that make the song transform in a way. The Lil Peep, home recording, DIY thing – I was like, “That’s what I do. I could just do this myself again.”

Voyager had a producer, live tracking and was super crisp. It just felt like a return to form of Current Joys. Since I’m not a thoroughly trained producer, I say I do “emotional producing” and feel it out.

YA: I feel like Voyager was your stadium rock moment. It’s big.

CJ: One question I have – do you think TikTok is evil or good?

YA: I think TikTok has drained humanity from art. It is a really amazing tool and to some extent has put the power back in the artist’s hands. It puts labels out in a way – any one can blow up at any time – but I feel like music is so algorithmic now.

If you’re a small artist, virality can be a curse. You get signed and dropped. I feel like TikTok is on the way out in terms of being the only thing people in the music industry think of as a way to make it. There are artists getting signed who can’t perform live and they can’t sell out a 100 cap room. An artist is not an artist if they can’t perform or play a live show.

CJ: Do you think there is a craving for a live, unique experience because so many people don’t know how to play their music live?

YA: With the internet and after COVID especially, I think people are craving genuine human interaction and live music is a great way to get that. Obviously recorded music can move you, but the true humanity in music is standing in front of people and playing. I think that’s what can make or break a career.

YA: Both of your bands were already big and went viral on TikTok. How do you feel like that’s changed your shows? Your crowds have always been so rowdy.

CJ: It almost made them a little tamer. I remember doing the last Current Joys tour and wondering why people weren’t going crazy. I was freaking out every night. I think it was because the rooms were bigger and maybe we got more of a crowd just coming for those TikTok songs. Maybe it’s a little different with Surf Curse because the music is easier to just go crazy to.

Virality is a curse but at the same time it’s like mini-fame. Fame is a curse. Success is a curse. They’re all what our society deems to be the goal, but I think it’s taught me that things blowing up on TikTok cannot really affect you and you can’t think about it too much. The only thing that is important is your art and making something that means something to you. That’s the only way it will move or shock or create a response in someone else.

So, you have to do it for yourself first. Everything else is a game, a lie, a fantasy. People get caught up in that and forget about the music. It’s hubris that happens with everyone who gets a viral hit or something blowing up on the internet. It’s a giant dopamine hit.

YA: It’s mass validation and you can only go down from there.

CJ: Yeah, and if you go up I guess good for you.

YA: I really think it’s very few and far between to go up. Most of the time it’s hard to follow it up.

CJ: I think that everyone forgets that they already have worth and value without it.

YA: In a way, I relate to it. You want something so bad and you’re looking for that one thing that’s going to put you on this path, but at the end of the day that’s not really how it works. It usually takes getting lucky a few times and fighting really hard. If you talk to anyone who has success, they’re still depressed and it doesn’t change anything.

CJ: Paul Newman says “luck is an art” and I think that means that you do have to be lucky but there’s also so much work and stamina required, especially in this industry with rejection and failure and loss. You have to put yourself in those positions to get lucky.

YA: Yeah, it’s who can take the hardest beating at the end of the day? Who is going to get up over and over again and blindly believe in themselves even if the world isn’t reflecting that back at them?

CJ: You said something to me a long time ago that’s so true. You said musicians are extremely insecure ego maniacs or something like that.

YA: Musicians are egomaniacs with an inferiority complex.

CJ: Yeah, I think about that all the time.

YA: It’s true. At the end of day, you have to go to bed thinking you’re the shit even if you don’t think so.

CJ: You have to like your work.

YA: Why would you pursue something if you don’t believe people should like it? How egotistical is it to think that anyone should give a fuck about the art that you make? But you have to. It’s crazy!

CJ: In this world you have to. In a perfect world, you wouldn’t have to.

Current Joys Announces Debut Australian Tour

American singer-songwriter Current Joys is gearing up for his first Australian tour in April with headline shows in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Presented by WavyLand, the tour promises to showcase Rattigan’s evolving artistry and provide a glimpse into the future of his music as he prepares to release two albums this year.

The Australian tour follows the release of the latest Current Joys’ album ‘LOVE + POP’, which featured collaborations with notable artists such as Lil Yachty, Slow Hollows and pop singer YOUR ANGEL.

Current Joys – ‘A Different Age’

Current Joys is from Reno, Nevada, Rattigan is a multi-talented songwriter, producer, performer and music video director. He is also a key member of indie surf rock band Surf Curse.

LOVE + POP was Current Joys’ tenth album in a decade-long career. It captured a moment that is fast, loud, moody and a bit dangerous. Dedicated follower in the underground bedroom pop scene. ,

Current Joys has released several albums and compilations on Bandcamp. From his debut album “Wild Heart” in 2013 to his studio album “Voyager” in 2021, he has amassed a global fan base of over 160,000 social followers and 6 million monthly listeners.

Hawthorne Heights Announce Huge US Tour in 2024

I t’s been 20 years since alternative emo/pop punk band Hawthorne Heights released their debut album The Silence In Black And White , and the band is going to celebrate with an extensive US tour complete with multiple co-headliners! 

The 20 Years of Tears Tour will follow the band’s current Behind The Tears Tour and hit US cities from June to September. The bands supporting this massive tour will include I See Stars, Anberlin, Armor For Sleep, Emery, This Wild Life, Stick To Your Guns, Thursday, Cartel, and Saosin on alternating dates.

The Hawthorne Heights 2024 Tour will begin on June 22 at Stateline, Nevada at Lake Tahoe Is For Lovers Fest without any supporting acts. The tour will end on September 15 in Worcester, Massachusets at The Palladium with support from Anberlin, Cartel, Stick to Your Guns, Emery, and This Wild Life.

Tickets to the 20 Years Of Tears Tour will be available through the band’s website . Many of the new tour dates are available for presale over at Ticketmaster right now, and fans can choose between artist, Ticketmaster, Spotify, or other presale events.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on April 19 at 10:00 am local. If you don’t want to deal with the presale events, check out Stubhub for general on-sale tickets. Stubhub is an excellent little resource for finding last-minute tickets.

This waiting isn’t fun: It can feel like you’ve been stripped of any decision-making power in your own career. Warning signs of an impending layoff may include :

• You notice that employees who leave aren’t being replaced. The job sits open.
• There are freezes on hiring and spending.
• You hear vague language from leadership about putting off projects until a later date.
• There is a merger or acquisition coming.

So, let’s say you think a layoff is coming and you suspect you’re one of the unlucky ones. What do you do? Here are a few activities that are worth your time, and certainly better than twiddling your thumbs in an anxious sweat.

Reach out to your network for virtual or in-person coffee chats. And do it now, before it’s a scramble.

It may seem obvious, but the most important tool you have when it comes to your career is your network. Create a list of everyone you know who it might be worth talking to about your career. Do not rule out: neighbors, friends, your kids’ friends’ parents, past colleagues and bosses, people who have left your current company and landed elsewhere. Be creative and expansive! The goal is to keep connections warm so that you’re not doing these reach outs from a place of desperation a few months from now. Also, make sure to ask how you can help the other person. You might be surprised at how opportunities for reciprocity abound.

There’s a lot of career posting that happens on LinkedIn, and it can be good to start your research early.

Create a list of some companies that interest you. Ideally, you’ll know at least one person at each company you list so that you have an “in” when it comes to networking. You can add to this list each time you read about an interesting company, and you’ll have this list in your back pocket if you get bad news.

Take time for self-care.

More important than any job-related task, you must take care of your own well-being. Layoffs are stressful: you might be saying goodbye to dear friends and longtime colleagues and experiencing a tremendous amount of fear and uncertainty. It’s crucial that you understand your own needs when it comes to stress management, and prioritize accordingly. This too shall pass.

Netanyahu ‘undermining any chance’ of ceasefire agreement: Hamas official

Basem Naim, the head of political and international relations for Hamas, told Al Jazeera that the Israeli prime minister has been “doing the maximum to block or to undermine any chance to reach ceasefire agreement”.

Speaking after three children and four grandchildren of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli attack, he said Netanyahu is “under pressure” from the US, the international community and from Israeli society so he has resorted to “using all the other dirty tools by killing our children, our wives, [or] by assassinating leaders”.

Hezbollah gives recap of today’s attacks on Israel

On its Telegram channel, the Lebanese group said it carried out two attacks today in the “eastern sector”. This is a relatively low number of attacks for Hezbollah as it continues to exchange fire with the Israeli army across the Lebanon-Israel border.

The two attacks were, according to Hezbollah:

• Against the “Al-Samaqa site in the occupied Lebanese hills of Kafr Shuba”, which was hit directly with artillery fire.
• Against the Zibdin barracks in the occupied Lebanese Shebaa Farms, which were hit directly.

The group also expressed its condolences to Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh, who lost three of his sons and four grandchildren in an Israeli army strike on Gaza earlier today.

Deputy Secretary-General of Hezbollah Naim Qassem offered these condolences to Haniyeh during a phone call, it said.

Russia’s FM and UN Middle East official call for immediate ceasefire

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process have called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after holding talks in Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“The importance was stressed of an immediate cease-fire, the provision of safe, unhindered access to all those affected and in need and the release of hostages,” the ministry said after Lavrov met Tor Wennesland in Moscow.

The statement said the two men “paid great attention to the prospects for reviving the peace process of a Palestinian-Israeli settlement after the ‘hot phase’ of the conflict is over”.

Roads reopened in Absan, east of southern Gaza’s Khan Younis

After the Israeli army announced its withdrawal from Khan Younis in southern Gaza earlier this week, residents have been slowly returning to their old neighbourhoods to inspect the level of destruction.

Municipal workers are now restoring roads and services in the area, and have so far reopened roads in Absan, a small town east of Khan Younis, as video verified by Al Jazeera shows.

The city had been subject to months of intense Israeli bombardments and fighting. Civil defence workers have said they recovered dozens of bodies from under the rubble in Khan Younis.

US army commander to visit Israel to coordinate defence against Iran: Report

Barak Ravid, a journalist for the US news site Axios, says that the senior US army commander in charge of the Middle East will visit Israel tomorrow.

US army General Erik Kurilla, head of the army’s Central Command (CENTCOM), is expected to coordinate with Israeli military officials on a possible attack on the country by Iran or its aligned militias, Ravid reports, quoting two unnamed Israeli officials.

Iran has pledged to retaliate against Israel for an attack on its diplomatic consulate in the Syrian capital last week. The Israeli military has been on high alert since.

The Israeli officials have said they are expecting an unprecedented attack on Israeli soil, one that may not come from Israel’s northern border but rather via ballistic missiles.

Germany’s Lufthansa suspends flights to and from Tehran

Germany’s national carrier, Lufthansa, says that after careful evaluation, it has decided to suspend flights to and from Tehran until probably Thursday, April 11, “due to the current situation in the Middle East”.

Countries in the region and the US have been on high alert and preparing for a possible attack by Iran in response to the April 1 Israeli air strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which killed seven people, including two commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

“We are constantly monitoring the situation in the Middle East and are in close contact with the authorities. The safety of our guests and crew members is Lufthansa’s top priority,” a company spokesperson told the news agency Reuters.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Wednesday that Israel “must be punished and will be punished” for the attack in Damascus.

In an apparent response to Khamenei, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday that Israel will respond if Iran attacks Israel from its own soil.

Hamas say fourth grandchild of Haniyeh confirmed dead in Israeli strike

The number of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s family members killed in an Israeli strike has risen to seven after Hamas announced that a fourth grandchild had died.

The group said in a statement that Hazem, Amir, Mohammad, and their children, Mona, Amal, Khaled and Razan, were killed following “a treacherous and cowardly Zionist raid that targeted them in Shati camp on the first day of the blessed Eid Al-Fitr”.

US and Turkish top diplomats hold phone call: Report

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza in a call with his US counterpart Antony Blinken today, a Turkish diplomatic source told the Reuters news agency.

Yesterday, Turkey said it will impose restrictions on exports to Israel until there is a ceasefire and increased aid in the Gaza Strip, after the Israeli government refused to allow it to airdrop aid over the besieged and bombarded territory.

The Turkish Ministry of Trade said it will no longer send to Israel items in 54 categories spanning iron and steel products, jet fuel, construction equipment, machines, cement, granites, chemicals, pesticides and bricks.

“We will not avert our eyes; Palestine will be free”, they sang.

Killing of Haniyeh’s children, grandchildren ‘does not happen randomly’: Analyst

Sultan Barakat, professor of conflict and humanitarian studies at Qatar Foundation’s Hamad Bin Khalifa University, told Al Jazeera that the assassination of Haniyeh’s family members could have been specifically carried out to derail the ceasefire negotiations.

The Israeli military would have identified the three children and the three grandchildren of Haniyeh, he said, adding, “I think someone must have taken the decision to go ahead.”

“We have seen, over the last ten days or so, the moral tide turning against Netanyahu and this coalition across the world” he said.

The Israeli prime minister, in the latest round of ceasefire talks, had “to climb down more than Hamas”, he added.

However, to be able to reach an agreement, “you have to establish a minimum level of trust between the two sides”, Barakat said, noting that any trust that existed before would have been “demolished” after today’s attack on the Hamas leader’s family members.

Far-right Israeli minister says no one from Hamas ‘immune’ from Israeli attacks

Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has congratulated the Israeli army and Israel following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s three children.

“None of the leaders of Hamas who … still hold our hostages, is immune from our long hand. With God’s help we will reach everyone,” he said in a post on X.

Smotrich, the far-right leader of one of the pro-settler parties in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, has repeatedly called for the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. He has also reportedly threatened to leave Netanyahu’s coalition if Israel strikes a deal with Hamas that he perceives as unfavourable.

Qatari PM, Palestinian president offer condolences to Haniyeh: Hamas

Hamas posted on Telegram that Ismail Haniyeh, head of the group’s political bureau, has received a call from Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in which he “offered condolences on the martyrdom of a number of his children and grandchildren in a treacherous Zionist bombing”.

In a separate post, the group said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also offered his condolences.

Israeli politician: Attack on Haniyeh’s family ‘shows lack of political wisom’

On X, Yair Golan writes that the targeting of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s children and grandchildren, who were killed in an Israeli strike earlier today, was timed poorly.

“However justified and appropriate [the killings] may be,” he said, “Carrying out such dramatic actions, on the eve of a possible deal for the release of the abductees, constitutes another serious layer in their lawlessness”.

Yair Golan is an Israeli politician and former deputy chief of staff of the Israeli army. He was also the deputy minister of economy, and served as a member of the Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset.

US commitment to Israel’s security against Iran, proxies is ‘iron clad’: Biden

US President Joe Biden says during a press conference that he has discussed developments in the Middle East with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who is on a state visit to the US.

Biden said those discussions included their “shared support” for a ceasefire, a deal to release captives and “urgent efforts” to deal with the humanitarian crisis that exists in Gaza.

He added that they also wanted to address the “Iranian threat”, which included launching a “significant attack on Israel”.

“As I told [Israeli] Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad”, Biden said.

The past couple of hours have been very intense in the Gaza Strip

What we see on the ground now, despite the talks in Cairo and despite the Israeli military [withdrawal of some troops], there is an exponential surge of attacks across the Gaza Strip.

There’s been a surge in air strikes across the central area, eastern Khan Younis city, Wadi Gaza and also the northern part of the strip.

Particularly in the northwestern part of Gaza City, around the Shati refugee camp, where six people, the sons and grandsons of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh, were in a vehicle on their way to visit – because it’s the first day of Eid – their relatives, when a drone fired at least two missiles that completely incinerated the vehicle.

Across the central area [of the Gaza Strip], more people have been transferred to Al-Aqsa Hospital who were critically injured by attacks on residential homes. The eastern part of Khan Younis is under almost nonstop constant artillery and shelling.

Yemen’s Houthis claim fresh attacks on Israeli, US ships

The two Israeli vessels were the MSC Darwin, and the MSC Gina – both of which were targeted in the Gulf of Aden, a spokesperson for the group said in a video statement.

The two US ships that were targeted were also in the Gulf of Aden. These were a US-registered Maersk vessel, and another “American warship” that was targeted with a number of drones, the spokesperson said.

“The ships were targeted with a number of naval missiles and drones,” he said.

“The Yemeni armed forces will continue to carry out their moral and humanitarian duties towards the Palestinian people,” the spokesperson continued.

The attacks, he said, will “continue until the enemy [Israel] lifts the siege it imposed on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip”.
