image11

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba was built in the 8th century  under Emir Abd ar-Rahman I on the remains of a Visigothic Christian church (the Basilica of St. Vincent Martyr).

The Emir wanted Cordoba to eclipse Byzantium and Baghdad in science, culture, and the arts. The sultan had recently fled there after his family’s overthrow in Damascus.

Why should you go on an Islamic Tour of the Mosque of Córdoba?

There are many reasons why you should visit The Mosque of Cordoba. For instance, the Mosque of Cordoba was the second largest mosque in the world, behind Mecca for a long time.

In addition, the Mosque of Cordoba is a unique construction because of the number of architectural styles it preserves: Mudejar, Umayyad, Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance.

How long does the Mosque of Cordoba tour last?

The duration of the visit is approximately one hour, but if you do the visit during the daytime, you can stay for as long as you need.

The Alhambra and Generalife, Granada

The Alhambra was a palace, citadel, and fortress, the residence of the Nasrid sultans, high officials, court servants, and elite soldiers. It reached its splendor in the second half of the 14th century, coinciding with the sultanates of Yusuf I (1333-1354) and the second reign of Muhammad V (1362-1391).

image2 1

Why should you visit the Alhambra and Generalife?

The Alhambra is a must-see monument. It bears witness to the Moorish rule in the territory and its architectural style, which is why it was recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

You should also make a visit to enjoy its gardens and surroundings. Its majestic towers are a must-see once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How long does the Alhambra and Generalife tour last?

The general visit to the monumental complex lasts approximately three hours.

  • Qubba del Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo.

Dress code of the Alhambra and Generalife

The Alhambra has no specific dress code. Depending on the time of year, we recommend either something cool to deal with the hot Summer temperatures or, in Winter taking a jumper due to the breeze.

It is mandatory to present your original ID or passport to access the monumental complex.

It’s essential to be on time for the Nasrid Palaces. Don’t forget to bring the ticket with its QR code in physical or digital format (including for children under 12 years).

Aljafería Palace, Zaragoza

The Aljafería Palace is an 11th-century Moorish castle-palace. It was built as a recreational residence for the Taifa kings in the 11th century under King al-Muqtadir. Remains of its fortified enclosure are still preserved. It was built as a place of recreation and also served as a defensive building.

image4 1

Why should you visit the Aljafería Palace?

You can not miss the Aljaferia Palace because it is considered one of the peaks of Hispano-Muslim art, along with the Alhambra in Granada and the Mosque of Cordoba.

Also, it is the northernmost Islamic palace in Europe and the most luxurious and best-preserved of the Taifa period.

How long does the Aljafería Palace tour last?

The duration depends on if the visit is guided or not. Free tours are about 45 minutes long, and guided tours are 60 minutes.

How much does the Aljafería Palace tour cost?

The prices are as follows:

  • General admission: 5€.
  • Discount: 1€ for students and the retired.
  • Free: Children under 12 years old.

Dress code of the Aljafería Palace

There is no specific dress code, so we recommend dressing according to the season. The Summer will be tremendously hot, so dress light and apply plenty of sun cream. Alternatively, a jumper is a great idea against the wind in the Winter.

Guided visits will be available during July and August. The English tour begins at 11 am, while the French tour starts at 5 pm.

Please be punctual when arriving at the ticket office. If a visitor is ten minutes late, they risk not being able to enter the palace (or at the very least a lengthy wait) if all other groups are full.

Use the QR codes located at various points of the monument and the brochures available.

Follow the route marked inside the palace and the indications on display.

Madinat al-Zahra: Archaeological Ensemble, Córdoba

Medina Azahara, Córdoba

The history of Medina Azahara begins with Abderraman, III. He decided to build a city on the outskirts of Cordoba between 936 and 976. Abderraman, III built the city to bring together the caliphate’s administrative and residential work.

The materials used in its construction tell us of the great interest of the monarch to show his great power and supremacy.

Why should you visit Medina Azahara?

Medina Azhara is a must-see because it’s one of Andalusia’s most important works of Muslim art. In its time, it was the highest expression of the rise and power of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

How long does the Medina Azahara tour last?

The approximate time of the visit to Medina Azahara, including the museum tour, is between 2.5 and 3 hours.

How much does the Medina Azahara tour cost?

The entrance to Medina Azahara is free for citizens of the European Union. For all other visitors, the entrance fee is 1.50 €.

There is no specific dress code to enter the Medina Azahara. Therefore, dress according to the season; in the Summer months, something light and fresh, while in Winter, a jumper (or if very cold, a coat) to stay warm.

It is not necessary to bring your original passport. A copy should be fine to authenticate your nationality.

There is a bus that drives you from Cordoba to Medina Azahara. Its price is 2,50€. Children between 5-12 years are 1,50€.

The Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville

In the year 913, the Umayyad caliph Abderramán III ordered the construction of a new center of government in Seville on the site of an ancient Visigothic settlement that had previously been Roman.

This “multicultural” curiosity about its foundation seems a foretaste of the many historical ups and downs that would shape its present appearance.

After the disintegration of the Caliphate of Cordoba, the Royal Alcazar would pass into the hands of the abbots (Taifa of Seville), the Almoravid emirs, and, in the last Islamic Period, the Almohads.

The successive reforms of that time had already turned the Real Alcázares into an excellent palace complex surrounded by walls in the middle of the 13th century.

image6

Why should you visit The Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville?

The Alcázar of Seville was built as a fortress to protect the Muslim authorities and is currently the oldest royal palace in Europe. Its extensive history is reflected in the variety of its architecture, which mixes Baroque with Renaissance, Romanesque, Gothic and Mudejar.

How long does the Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville tour last?

The recommended duration of the visit is two hours, although you can make a quick visit in one hour and fifteen minutes. But if you want to do a detailed visit, it requires about three hours.

How much does the Alcazar Royal Palace of Seville tour cost?

The entry fees are as follows:

  • General admission: 14,50€.
  • Pensioners and students from 17 to 25 years old: 7€ (you must show proof at reception).
  • For children under 13 years old: 1€.
  • Audioguide: 6€.

There is no specific dress code. Seville can be unbearably hot during the Summer, so dress light. During the Winter, you will likely only need a jumper at most.

The use of tripods or stands is prohibited.

Famous Islamic Architecture in Spain

Muslim art, also known as Islamic art, is the set of artistic manifestations that occurred in the different religious areas of Islam.

Islamic art and, in particular, Islamic architecture in Spain can be classified into 5 stages depending on the different reigns:

1. Cordovan or Caliphal Period (8th-11th century)

Characteristics.

Cordovan art has many influences from Visigothic art, especially in the use of horseshoe arches.

It’s also very characteristic to see voussoirs in color and texture (alternating striped colors). This alfiz is a molding explicitly used to frame the arches or the openings of windows and doors.

image9

The famous art of this period

During this period, the most well-known pieces of architecture are:

  • Central vault of Macsura
  • The Mosque of Bad el-Mardum in Toledo
  • Madinat as-Zahra Palace in Cordoba

2. Taifa Period (11th-12th century)

The art of the Taifa kingdoms was characterized by emulating the splendor of the previous era, with almost excessive overloading of ornamental constructions.

Despite the everyday use of low-cost plasterwork materials, it served its ornamental function well. Unfortunately, very few buildings have been preserved due to poor quality materials.

image7

Famous art of this period

One of the few buildings we still have from this Period is La Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza.

3. Almorávide Period (12th century)

The use of the muqarnas characterized its artistic manifestations. This decorative element is a stalactite hanging from the arches and domes and is made of plaster, often polychrome.

It is an art that is heavily linked to the Taifa kingdoms. However, there are hardly any remains and significant samples of this period, the best preserved being those found in North Africa.

4. Almohade Period (12th century)

This civilization arrived in the Peninsula and brought with it

image8

one of the most original and new elements that had not been used before, known as sebka. Sebka is a type of geometric decoration in the form of a network of superimposed rhombuses that masks the construction systems.

The most important building of this period was the Mosque of Seville nowadays. Only a few parts have been preserved:

  • Patio de los naranjos
  • The “minaret” today is known as the Giralda

5.Nazarí period (13th-15th century)

image10

The materials were poor but covered with plasterwork, marble, sebka, and tiles. As for constructive elements, the most common are the round arches and the white marble columns with thin shafts and Corinthian capitals.

Since Granada was the capital of Al-Andalus during this time, all the representations of this period are in La Alhambra.

Some parts worth mentioning are:

  • Patio del Cuadro Dorado.
  • Patio de Comares.
  • Patio de los Leones.

Famous Islamic Art in Spain

Unfortunately, there remain very few Islamic art sculptures and paintings in Spain. However, we know that Muslim decorative arts varied, ranging from ceramics to carpets, fabrics, and goldsmiths.

Among the few sculptural works that have been preserved, it is worth mentioning the bronze fawn from the Madinat as-Zahra Palace in Cordoba.

In painting, it is of particular interest the fresco on tesso painted on the vault of the Sala de los Reyes of the Alhambra with courtly themes and hunting.

Which city in Spain has a famous old mosque?

The oldest mosque in Spain is the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. It used to be a mosque, although nowadays it is a catholic cathedral.

What was the Islamic capital of Spain?

The capital of Islamic Spain has varied throughout the years.

Firstly, the capital changed between Seville and Cordoba during “Valiato de Al-Ándalus” between 711 and 756 CE.

Later on, in 756 CE Abd al-Rahman III declared religious independence and proclaimed “El Califato de Córdoba” in Cordoba as its capital.

Lastly and due to the reconquest, in 1238, the “Emirato de Granada” was established. Granada became its capital until 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs overthrew King Muhammad XII.

Seville houses one of the most famous and iconic remnants of Islamic Spain – the Real Alcazar, or Royal Alcazar – a remarkable palace built by the Muslim ruling class in the 8 th century. It is a fine and unique example of Mudéjar art – a style, deeply rooted in cultural diversity and originating from practising Muslims living in Christian territories in historical Spain.

Marvel at the Seville Cathedral, originally AlJama Mosque constructed by the order of the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf. Admire the Giralda, now a bell tower for the cathedral, but originally the minaret of the mosque, and in its time the tallest tower in the world, designed to resemble the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh.

One of the world’s greatest Islamic buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mezquita, or Grand Mosque of Cordoba, is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago, in the 8 th century, when Córdoba was capital of Islamic Spain and western Europe’s biggest, most cultured city.

The design evolved for around 200 years to its final form as the Grand Mosque, until it was repurposed as a cathedral and altered accordingly. One of the most famous features of the building is its 856 double arches that are modelled on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba remains a truly mesmerizing building that exudes history, culture and opulence.

islamic tour spain

Granada, the last stronghold of Muslims in Spain, is filled with exquisite architecture and serene surroundings telling of a historic time in which Muslims ruled over this region. Every turn speaks of remnants of this age and the prosperity enjoyed by the people living there.

You’ll be taken back to this time as you walk through the picturesque arches, stroll through the Arab quarter or drink tea at one of teterías of Albayacin.

The iconic and astonishing AlHambra, standing at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, Spain’s highest mountain range, is a jewel in the crown of Islamic Spain. Developed in the 13 th century, Alhambra, a series of palaces, citadel, gardens and orchards, was the residence for the Nasarid sultans and elites, the last remaining Muslim dynasty in Al-Andalus. The profound beauty in its architectural design, intricate detail and engineering leaves visitors in awe of its allure.

Known as the ‘city of three cultures’ due to the peaceful coexistence of  Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities for centuries. Toldeo’s magnificence comes from the numerous mosques, synagogues and churches alongside its palaces and fortresses. Amongst the most famous are the Catedral Primada de Toledo, a gothic cathedral, the Mezquita del

Cristo de La Cruz, the Mosque of Christ of the Light, a 10 th century mosque and the Santa María la Blanca, a former synagogue built in the Muslims style of construction.

Gaze in wonder at the rich and diverse history of Toldeo that exudes out of its buildings, landscapes and culture. A UNESCO World Heritage site, still preserving its original layout and accessible through its narrow, winding streets, Toldeo will leave you deeply fascinated with Islamic Spain.

This morning you’ll arrive at Malaga Airport where our local guide will be waiting to greet you.

We’ll head straight out to take you for lunch (around 15€) before heading Ronda, where you’ll see the famous Puente Nuevo bridge .

From Ronda we’ll take a scenic route to the famous city of Seville, where our local guide will walk you through centuries of Islamic history. We’ll start at the Royal Alcazar , a Christian palace built by Muslim craftsmen with unique mudejar decoration. Our next stop will take you to the Giralda Tower , what once formed the minaret of the Mosque of Seville in 1182. Our final stop on our walking tour of Sevilla is the iconic Plaza España , where we’ll try to catch golden hour. You’ll then have some free time to explore the Muslim quarters before dinner.

Overnight in Sevilla.

Walking through the narrow-whitewashed streets of Cordoba feels like taking a step back in time. Today you’ll visit the gem of this city, which is also one of the oldest mosques in Europe. We’ll then take you to have a lunch inside a beautiful courtyard garden , Moorish style. Throughout the day our local guide will share the stories of the first Muslims in Spain , how they helped create a Golden Age of civilisation in the region before their expulsion by the Spanish inquisition.

You’ll have some free time to explore Cordoba’s meandering streets before we take you out for dinner in the countryside with a local Muslim family. Overnight in Cordoba.

You’ll have some time this morning to explore Cordoba at your leisure before we head out to explore a 1000-year-old gem.

The once sumptuous city of Madinat al Zahra is now only a shadow of its former grandeur, having  slept for almost 1000 years under layers of dirt.  The city was sacked in 1010, less than seventy years after it was built, and the beautiful furnishings – down to even the marble slabs – were stolen or quarried. This is the  largest city ever built from scratch  in Western Europe, but chances are you’ve never even heard of it. Overnight in Granada.

Today you’ll experience something only few people who have visited Spain been fortunate enough to experience.

Local expert and guide Yasin Maymir will host you in the Alhambra Palace, the most visited monument in Spain and the best Preserved Medieval Muslim  Royal Palace  in the World. Yasin will “ Read the Alhambra ” to you by following the Arabic inscriptions on the walls. The hidden meanings, du’a, Qur’an, and poetry inscribed on these walls make the Alhambra once of the most unique forms of Islamic architecture in the world.

This afternoon you’ll pray in the mosque of Granada and then some free time to explore the Albayzin, Granada’s old town. Overnight in Granada.

After Breakfast we will make our trip to the Alpujarra mountains , where the last Muslims of Al Andalus were living and practicing Islam for more than 150 years after the conquest of Granada. New Muslims are living here now, where they nurture olive plantations which produce olive oil for the whole year, with the same olives once planted by the Muslims of the past. You’ll visit the traditional village of Pampaneira , where you can explore the carpet-weavers workshop and Chocolate Factory, as well as roam through the traditional houses, streets and architecture of this village . After lunch you’ll be able to walk through Orange Orchards and Olive Trees , before heading to the local Masjid to pray and meet the local Muslims. Overnight in Granada.

Should you wish to extend your stay in Spain, let us know and we can assist you with accommodation, transport and anything else you require. Arrival time at Malaga airport is 9:30-10:00 am

The Ultimate Muslim-Friendly Guide to Travel in Spain

Islamic Spain tours are gaining more and more popularity every day. Reasons for this include Spain’s rich Islamic history, ease of travel, and stunning halal food of Spain. With more than 80 million tourists visiting in the year 2019, Spain is the second most visited country in the world. Similarly, halal tourism has grown significantly. Over five million people visit every year for an Islamic history tour of Spain. It is projected that halal tourism in Spain will continue to grow across the world. With the growth in tourism, local Islamic travel agencies have started a great job of guiding first-time Muslim visitors to Spain. So if you are a first-time visitor, you no longer need to worry about the hassles and difficulties of visiting Spain.

The country’s past directly links it with Islam, and many Muslims have significantly contributed to the nation’s growth and development. Islamic history of Spain dates back to the year 711 AD when a Visigoth king named Roderick was defeated by general Tarik-ibn-Ziyad. Moroccan Muslims played a very important role in Spain’s conversion to Islam and the expansion of Al Andalus. Spain’s Islamic past spans over eight centuries, and remembrances of it are still visible in different parts of Spain. Travelling to Spain is a great way for Muslims to reconnect with Spain’s rich Islamic tradition.

Why Spain is one of the best destinations for halal tours

Spain gives you everything that you can ask for in a halal tour. Islamic history, local Muslim tour agencies and guides, like the ones provide by Omeya Tours, the first local Muslim-friendly tour agency in Spain. You will find some of the best halal restaurants in Europe with a mix of Eastern and Spanish flavours. In the land of tapas and croquettes, you will never go hungry. Spain’s gastronomical adventures are one of the primary reasons behind its growth as a tourist destination alongside its breath-taking nature, culture and Islamic history. Some of the must-try dishes for your Spain trip are listed below:

  • Tortilla Española – Made of eggs, potatoes, onions, salt, and black pepper, this dish is every Spaniard’s favourite. Also known as a Spanish omelette, this is a simple yet flavourful dish. It is comfort food made of simple ingredients that are found in every Spanish home.
  • Churros con Chocolate – It’s a sweet fried dough that is flavoured with sugar and cinnamon. It tastes amazing in itself, but locals know the secret of making it heavenly. Order a cup of hot chocolate with your plate of churros, and dip it in the chocolate. Having it this way enhances all the flavours, and you might just discover your next favourite dessert in this dish.
  • Gazpacho – Gazpacho is a homely, comfort food loved by Spaniards. It is a light and rejuvenating soup made of onion, garlic, tomato, olive oil, and bread. This soup is very effective in beating the Spanish summer. Have it chilled, and it will cool your body down. Packed with nutrients and a simple, rustic taste, you should not miss Gazpacho in your halal tour of Spain.
  • Paella: Last but in no way the least, Paella is what Spain is famous for. People travel to Spain from all over the world to try some of the best Spanish Paellas. Paella is a dish primarily made with rice. Some form of protein goes into the rice, the best is with seafood, and then all the magical Spanish flavours go in. The result is an exceptionally delicious dish that balances all flavours perfectly. Even if you miss all the other dishes we suggested, you should not miss Paella at any cost. Coastal cities and Valencia are the best places to indulge in this culinary masterpiece.

Finding halal food in Spain can become a bit difficult if you are not well-acquainted with the place. The problem is not with the availability of halal food but with finding them. A local Muslim tour agency can ease your worries by arranging halal food for you. Since they are well versed with the places and their food, they can guide you to places that serve safe and delicious halal food. Tour agencies like Omeya Tours will even assign a knowledgeable escort to guide you through the cities and countryside of Spain.

Apart from food, Spain’s immense popularity as a tourist destination lies in two factors: the Spanish Islamic heritage and the Spanish countryside. Both of these give Spain the best of both worlds. Spanish Islamic heritage is so rich that merging with a cosmopolitan, multi-ethnic environment makes it an unparalleled country to visit. The Spanish countryside, however, often gets ignored by many tourists. This is probably the biggest mistake anybody can make in their tour of Spain. Let’s see what each of them has to offer.

Spanish cities

Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, and Granada are well known for their bustling culture. Madrid’s cheerful crowd, mythical nightlife, and amazing restaurants are the best of their kind. You cannot be bored even for a moment when you are in Madrid. Barcelona is a beautiful beach city that has some of the best shopping options anywhere in the world. Barcelona is also the house to some of the most stunning pieces of Spanish architecture, like the Casa Battló and most of Gaudi’s masterpieces. Granada is another important Spanish city that is a testament to eight centuries of Islamic rule in Spain. The mosques and minarets around the city will take you back to the times of Islamic Spain.

Spanish countryside

The Spanish countryside is a hidden gem. You will find some beautiful beaches tucked in some remote corners of Spain. Like Formentera, a 12-mile-long island off the coast of Ibiza. It is known for its white beaches, and people find the quiet and calm of this place to be a welcome break after the bustle of the cities. You will find remnants of Spain’s long Islamic history in many parts of the countryside. This Islamic glory of Spain draws many Muslims to the country every year.

  • The Tabernas beach is another surprising discovery for tourists. It is a desert in south-east Spain, one of Europe’s very few.
  • Bardenas Reales National Park is another stunning destination in the countryside of Spain. It has bare charm with a terrain dotted with rocks and hills.
  • Catalan Pyrenees and Galicia are famous for their mountain ranges. They are very different from the rest of the Spanish landscape. Catalan Pyrenees has over 200 lakes and many tall peaks. Galicia has a rich wildlife and thick, luscious greenery. It also has mountain ranges that are very popular with hikers and campers.
  • A small town named Comillas in Cantabria is home to many masterpieces of the legendary architect Antoni Gaudi. This little town can rival Barcelona in terms of architectural superiority.
  • The region of Las Alpujarras, in the nature reserve park  of Sierra Nevada is a beautiful mountainous region spanning through the province of Granada, hilding the highest inhabited village in Spain. The place is marked by deep and beautiful valleys cut by the Guadalfeo and Andarax rivers. Las Alpujarras were the last stronghold of the Muslims in Spain, after the reconquest Muslim continued to live in these region for over 40 years.  . Las Alpujarras is a living reminder of Spain’s Islamic glory.

What would a halal tour of Spain look like?

It is always good to have a plan before you travel somewhere. Not doing so can land you in uncomfortable or dangerous situations, and you may lose a lot of money or have a bad overall experience. Having ideas of what an Islamic tour of Spain looks like will benefit you greatly when you take that trip yourself.

We will guide you through what are the places to visit, how to time your trip, what transport to use, and food choices.

It would be useful if you make yourself aware of Spanish etiquette and norms. It will prevent any miscommunication or confusion from happening.

Decide the start point of your tour

You have multiple options when choosing which city should be the starting point for your journey. The city you choose will then act as the buffer point from where you take on to other cities. You can choose to land in Madrid or Barcelona, or even Granada. To simplify your woes, you can trust a local Muslim tour agency to decide a tour plan for you based on your needs.

The capital city of Spain, Madrid, is a cosmopolitan, modern city that has all the amenities you need. Your Islamic tour of Spain would not be complete without visiting the Madrid Central Mosque and the largest mosque in Spain, the Islamic Cultural Center in Madrid. There are also various Muslim-friendly restaurants serving halal food, do not miss them. If you face any difficulty finding halal food in Madrid, get in touch with a local Muslim tour agency for assistance. From Madrid, you can take off to Barcelona or Granada by bus or flight, but we recommend you hire a private transport service with a local Muslim escort guide/driver to maximise your time and travel safely.

Barcelona is one of the centres of sports entertainment in the world. It also has stunning works of architecture spread through the city. You will also find amazing halal restaurants here, where you can enjoy everything from middle eastern to French cuisine. Masjid Tariq Ibn Ziyad and the Islamic Centre of Barcelona offer you praying options. Your halal tour would not be complete without visiting these two mosques. After Barcelona and Madrid, you can go to Granada or Cordoba. In fact, your halal tour of Spain can exclude Madrid or Barcelona, but never Granada, Cordoba or Seville.

The tour of the Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens is a sophisticated remembrance of Spain’s Islamic history. Located in Granada, Andalusia, visiting the Alhambra palace is an integral part of any Islamic Spain or Andalusian tour. The name of the palace literally means a pearl set in emeralds, and its beauty fits the name. It was built by Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar, the Emirate of Granada, in the 13th century. Yusuf I, the Sultan of Granada, converted the small fortress to a royal fort in 1333. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many Arabic inscriptions and signs of Islamic architecture.

Cordoba is an amazing mix of history and culture. The city has the best halal food in Spain, with many halal restaurants that offer their service with joy. Cordoba is much more than just food. A tour to the Mosque of Cordoba, Spain’s most significant relic of its Islamic past, is non-negotiable. Built in the 16th century by Abd al-Rahman II, this mosque is a testament of Islamic dominance in west Spain and the Islamic history of Cordoba. Its architecture includes distinct Islamic elements, like bold columns and horseshoe arches. For three centuries, this mosque has been the centre of religious life for many Muslims all over the world. The fortified palace city of Madinat az Zahra. It was built by the first caliph of Al Andalus Abd-ar-Rahman III in the 10th century. It served as the capital of Cordoba then. No Islamic tour of Spain is complete without a visit to the historical Madinat az Zahra . El Patio Andaluz , Qurtubah Cafe & Restaurant  and Tetería Petra are two prominent halal restaurants near the mosque.

Sevilla has the royal Alcazar, which was originally a Moorish fort. The Royal Alcazar is famous for its detailed carvings and beautiful gardens resembling those of Muslim times. Apart from this, the  Giralda Tower, Barrio de Santa cruz, Fundación Mezquita de Sevilla (central Mosque) and Torre del Oro are great places to visit for your halal tour of Spain. And a closure and magnificent example of the Spanish civil engineering don`t missed the emblematic Plaza de España, world film heritage site due to the numerous films that have chosen this location to be part of their sets.

Salam Alaikum to everyone,

It was a wonderful experience in Al Andalusia with Tariq Brother. Amazing place and highly recommended to everyone, who is interested (Regardless religion and ethnicity) to know about height and decline of a civilization should visit there. Islamic Spain is a lesson which effectively changed my previous understanding with Islam. I have promised myself to visit this place once more in near future Insha Allah. This place have spirituality which makes you feel like home. I would strongly recommend to Muslim parents to send their kids in youth leadership program. At the end thanks to Tariq brother and his team to put their efforts in this great cause.

Many wishes from Germany,

Shaheen Khateeb

“Have they not journeyed through the land and seen what was the end of those who have gone before them? They were stronger then themselves in might and left firmer traces on earth, yet whatsoever they earned did not help them.” Holly Quran, chapter 40, verse 82.

My wife and I just got back from an amazing journey to Spain last night.

After Hazarat Abu Bakar, Hazarat Umar, Hazarat Osman and Hazarat Ali (the rightly-guided Khilafas), the title of khalifa was borne by the fourteen Umayyad kings of Damascus (661-750) and subsequently by the thirty-eight Abbasid monarchs of Baghdad (750-1258). After the fall of the Umayyad dynasty, the title was also assumed by the SPANISH, first European dynasty. (branch of the Umayyad family) who ruled in Spain at Córdoba (755–1031), by the Fa?imid rulers of Egypt (909–1171). . From 1299 to 1922 under Ottomans in Turkey and officially abolished in 1924 in British parliament. Thus there existed multiple contemporaneous caliphs from the 7th to 13th centuries.

In all this the Spanish Muslim rule was most glorious and as well as tragic in the history of Islam and for this reason I always wanted to visit Spain.

Today we draw parallels of Spain with current events (at-least I have done it). There is so much to learn from our Spanish/European heritage, almost ruling there for 800 years the Muslims were literally wiped out (a sad chapter of history).

The tour is called Andalucian Routes run by a very dedicated soul Tariq Mehmood, who is a master in the Islamic history of Spain. The places we have visited are Cardoba mosque, the ruins of Madinat al-Zahra, the Al-Hamara palace and the last stand of the Muslims at the fort of Lanjarron, at Al-Buqara.

It is also heart warming to see the resurgence of Islam today, where it was banned for 500 years, we prayed at newly built mosques by the reverts, had dinner with the Spanish Muslim family, met some amazing Spanish Muslim artists. There are many Halal food restaurants now (if you know were to find them).

If you plan to go there, I would suggest you stay there for couple of extra days to visit Seville and Rock of Gibraltar

Inshallah I will share the pictures on facbook.

Nada Rustom

Salamu Allicom Brother Tariq,

I hope you and the family are doing well. I sincerely apologize for the late response. Here is my review of the tour (I have also attached a photo of myself because if I remember correctly, you had asked us to send one along with the reviews):

This tour has definitely been the most educational and incredible experience of my life so far. I had an absolutely amazing time and learned so much. The tour was so incredibly organized and professional. They took excellent care of us and arranged for wonderful accommodations in Spain and in Morocco. I truly enjoyed every single moment of this tour, from the informative presentations to the historical sights, to the wonderful people that I was able to meet. The way we were able to study and experience our Islamic heritage was unbelievable. I am so thankful that I was able to be a part of this amazing journey. Brother Tariq was a wonderful tour guide, and was honestly the most patient man I have ever met. He was able to guide us throughout both countries with ease and answer any questions we had. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour to everyone! It is an amazing journey that everyone should experience.

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help. Jazak Allah Khair.

Shahnaz Mukarram and Shahab Shakoor

Salams Br. Tariq and Sr. Tazim,

Hope everything is well with you. I couldn’t find a way to post my review so I thought I would email it to you.

Andalucian tour was unique, memorable, and inspirational for many reasons:

Typical tours provide only a sightseeing tour with some important facts and interesting stories. However, Br. Tariq is able to bring alive the period of Muslim Spain through his passionate discussion of history, visiting important historical sites, and interacting with current native Spanish Muslims succeeding in reviving Islam in Europe.

I highly recommend this tour for adults and teenagers as they will come to know about the positive influence of Muslims in Europe and other parts of the world during the Andalucian period.

I had an amazing experience. The Tour was extremely well organised, well paced, informative and really exhilarating! I feel proud of my Islamic heritage and would strongly recommend this tour to Muslims and non Muslims alike. I would like to give special recognition to our tour guide Tariq, who was incredibly patient, knowledgeable and very friendly. I feel we had a unique experience, being able to meet Muslims indigenous to the region.

Thank you for a wonderful experience, may Allah reward you for all your efforts,

Tour Reviews

Our trip to Andalusia was amazing. Under excellent guides, especially Yasin, we explored many Islamic historical sites. We, a group of Indonesian university professors and families, were guided to see the heritage of Muslim dynasties who contributed to the development of Spanish civilization in the past. Toledo, Cordoba, Seville and Granada were all important intellectual and cultural centers of Islamic west. Discussion on Islam in Andalusia in Seville University was very enlightening. Hotels were very good, ground transportation were nice, and foods were delicious to Indonesian taste like us. Thank you, ilimtour for such a wonderful trip arrangement.

We are a group of Singaporeans who travelled to Madrid and Andalusia overland with ILIM TOUR and our excellent, friendly guide Yasin. It was indeed a wonderful and memorable trip: learning the Islamic history of Spain , visiting interesting and beautiful cities, eating delicious halal meals and also making friends with the nice people of Spain… Our guide Yasin was also a caring and trustworthy person and it was so easy to book the land package through his website. We will always remember him and our wonderful trip and hope to visit Spain again in the near future. Thanks so much and All the best to Yasin and his team in all future endeavour!

We are group of 12 from Indonesia took the 5 days private tour. Start from lisbon just after attending european association for the study of diabetes. We visited seville, cordoba, granada, madrid and toledo. It was amazing Islam hystorical tour. Yasin, our tour leader not only knows very well the hystory of Islam in andalusia but he also knows very well how to make us like travelling back to the past. Yasin is wonderful tour leader, very helpful. He provides very nice hotel and clean bus with speed wifi. Amazing tour. Thank you

These very nice trip and Yasin tour leader is very good. Next time I want retour with the same tour leader at another contry, Insya Allah.

Brought me easily one of the best tour guides and private tours. Tour guide was very sincere, knowledgeable, kind, and works from the heart, which made our tour and trip a very enjoyable and also knowledge-increasing one. Very recommended for having an enjoyable travel while also learning history of sites.

“Excellent tour, very good value for money. Very professional, learnt a lot about Islamic History. Great food and really enjoyed my holiday.” (Rommana, UK – Autumn 2010)

“I used to think Canada was the most beautiful place on Earth. That is until I visited Islamic Spain. An I truly do no think it would have been so profound had I not gone with a Muslim tour group. The commentary was relevant to our Muslims roots. Commentary I would not have gotten with a non-Muslim group. The restaurants we were treated to were all halal. And the evening activities were priceless, like visiting the local Muslim community on their farm. Truly inspiring and unforgettable! Ma Sha Allah.” (Muhammad Al-Shareef, AlMaghrib Institute, USA – July 2010)

“I liked the way the tour was organized in terms of places to visit, and it seems to me that we spent the adequate amount of time in each place. Also, the guide was always friendly and willing to accommodate any requests, and the fact that he could speak fluently both the native language and English made our life much easier. Because I wanted to know the Islamic legacy in Spain, and thought that the best way to do it would be with an Islamic oriented tour with other Muslims.” (Rita Teresa, UK – Spring 2011)

“The guide was very knowledgeable and it was organised well.”  (Siddiq Fazaluddin, UK – Spring 2011)

“The experience was inspirational, enlightening and amazing.” (Mohamed Taalat, Canada – April 2013)

“Thank you for organising such a great and interest holiday. This was my best holiday ever, thanks to you.” (Aisha Qureishi, UK – July 2013)

“Thank you so much for making this trip one of the best I’ve had. Your knowledge of Islamic Spain is astonishing and your passion, energy, enthusiasm.” (Hauwa, UK – July 2013)

“Nice and enjoyable break and learnt so much about the history of Muslims in Europe that I didn’t know. Now I will tell my teachers about Andalus!”. (Jameelah, UK – April 2014)

“Thank you for a wonderful tour. We really enjoyed it and have come home full of beautiful images and interesting information. We would very much like to thank Yaseen personally. Thank you again and look forward to maybe going on another tour with you”.  (Brandino Machiavelli, UK – October 2014)

“I liked the diversity of activities, the number of cities visited and the theme that ran across the tour. I also found our guide to be fantastic and extremely cooperative. He went beyond the call of duty to help us all. As was our driver Antonio. We wanted a short but interesting holiday with the children that was convenient yet informative / educational. We were very interested in discovering the Islamic heritage of Spain and sharing that with our young children.” (Nizar & Huda, UK – October 2014)

“Once again it was our pleasure to be part of such a wonderful tour and mainly because our group members made it so enjoyable, and to our wonderful tour guide who went out of his way to help us, understand our needs and made the whole experience comfortable. Alcazar Tours Inc. is a Muslim travel agency initially founded in response to the low-quality supply for Muslims traveling Halal. The mass-market mentality of Muslim travel and tourism to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal was exploited mainly by tour operators of mass tourist markets designed for profit only.

Muslim travel has its particularities; Alcazar Tours, Inc. sets out privately to create a new approach to Muslim travel in Spain and Morocco for groups and private tours. Respectfully and adequately, these group tours are distributed in different regions, creating opportunities for the Muslim traveler and local people to connect spiritually and share Islamic values and Sufi teaching in remote areas. You can travel with a small group or in a private. We can customize it, especially for you in Spain and Morocco, emphasizing Islamic education and Sufi environment preservation since 1994.

We became the first tour company to create group scheduled programs and private itineraries to develop Muslim-responsible travel when others were busy focusing on mass tourism in the big cities, resorts, and beaches. Alcazar Tours, Inc. is incredibly proud of the reputation we have earned supplying Muslim Travel to Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. You can join our scheduled halal tours with a group tour, or you can contact us if you prefer independent tours that we can customize specially for you at all budgets. 11 Must-Visit Islamic Historical Sites In Spain

islamic tour spain

There are a few things that unquestionably and quintessentially create an image of a country, and Spain has done wonders when it comes to its diverse culture, food, and people along with having a long list of breathtaking phenomena that are firmly instilled into Spain's DNA.

Along with other attractions in Spain, one of the major contributing factors for Spain to be the way it is today is due to its rich overflowing Islamic culture, past and present, consisting of grandiose palaces, mosques built and constructed over the eras and monuments which brim with Spanish décor, leaving the country to be an enormous artistic and architectonic heritage site.

Spain is an absolutely beautiful country to explore and no one should miss the chance to discover Islamic history in Spain! So here's a guide to a Muslim-friendly vacation in Spain, listing 11 of the Most Historical Islamic Hot Spots to Visit when planning your next trip to Spain:

1. Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo

Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo

Influenced by the French Gothic style of the 13th century , The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo is a Roman Catholic Church in Toledo, Spain.

Before it was a cathedral, the main mosque of the city of Toledo was erected in its location. However, you can still see the remnant of the minaret that the muezzin made use of for the call to prayer back in the days.

Some historians point out that the prayer hall of the mosque matches with the design of the five naves of the existing cathedral ; the Sahn would correspond with a division of the existing cloister and the chapel of Saint Peter and the minaret with the bell tower.

The marble shafts that deck the outer sector of the choir is a revamped version of an old Muslim edifice, and the entwined arches of caliphate fashion in the triforium of the key chapel and of the ambulatory coincide with the Muslim structure custom of Cordoba .

Getting There

To get to Toledo and to this spot your best bet would be to catch the AVE fast train from Madrid which will take you 30 minutes while a bus or a car will take you 1 hour .

Address:  Calle Cardenal Cisneros, 1, 45002 Toledo, Spain Museum Opening Hours:  10AM to 6.30PM (Mon-Sat)                                         2PM to 6.30PM (Sun & Designated Days)                                         Closed on Jan 1, Dec 25 & Days of Celebration                                          (Refer  here  for more info on Opening Hours) Museum  Ticket Price:  € 12.50 (Complete Tour)                                    € 10 (Museums)                                     (Refer  here  for more info on Ticket Prices) Contact:  (+34) 925 22 22 41 Website:   www.catedralprimada.es

2. Madinat al Zahra

Placed on the western outskirts of Córdoba, Spain , Madinat al Zahra also known as Medina Azahara, and the "the shining city" is the remains of a huge, fortified Moorish palace-city constructed by Abd-ar-Rahman III .

Built on acres and acres of land, a striking part of Madinat al-Zahra is without doubt Abd al-Rahman III's Hall where tourists enter subsequently, after passing all the way through a terrace that dominates the remains of the mosque. Being a setting for rare occasions, the beautification of this hall is of showy luxury.

People visiting will be able to view quite a few remarkable places such as the Edificio Basilical Superior , which was used as offices for many state officials as well as Casa de Yafar , the residence of the Caliph's prime minister.

The tourism office currently schedules a bus to leave at 10.15AM or 5PM for €7 . Do keep in mind that there are no local buses traveling to the Madinat, but you can take a taxi to the location and then request the museum staff to hail a taxi for you when you need to head back to Cordoba city center.

If you happen to be traveling by car, there are sufficient parking lots available. The visitors' center is positioned at the bottom of the hill and there will be regular shuttle buses that will transport you to the entrance .

Taking a taxi from central Cordoba would cost you about €14 each way . A bus will have to be taken from the museum grounds to the actual archaeological ruins, which costs €2.10 for the return journey . The Madinat itself entails a lot of walking , first downhill then back uphill, so it would be challenging for someone who might have mobility problems.

3. Cordoba Mosque at Mezquita

Built in the 16th century, The Great Mosque of Cordoba is acknowledged for its architecture which symbolizes Muslims' influence and control in the West back in the years.

Initially, Abd al-Rahman purchased half of the Cathedral to enable the Muslim community to perform their prayers. Subsequently, he then obtained the other half to build a new mosque . Later, a cathedral was built right in the middle of the mosque , hence the name ‘Mezquita-Catedral' .

Upon arrival at the Cordoba Mosque tourists witness the many distinct and bold arches, known as the horseshoe arch , which was the first Muslim arch adaptation used in the Umayyad Great Mosque of Damascus.

The building is most known for its arcaded hypostyle hall , with 856 columns of jasper, onyx, marble, granite, and porphyry . The construction is viewed as one of the most skilled monuments of Moorish architecture.

The Great Mosque of Córdoba held a place of importance amongst the Islamic community for three centuries. It served as a significant Prayer hall for one's own devotion.

If you ever plan on visiting the mosque, an ideal timing would be during the morning hours as it tends to get crowded with tourists and worshipers from 11AM to 3PM.

Cordoba has a distance of 400 km from Madrid with a traveling time of about 1hr and 45 minutes via the AVE train. Cordoba's modern train station is located in Avenida de America , at the northern end of the central district . To get to the old town and the Mezquita, you can hop on a taxi (about €6 ) or just walk the 25-minute distance (head along Avenida de America and turn right on to Avenida del Gran Capitan ).

A royal palace in Seville , Spain, Alcazar was built for the Christian King Peter of Castile back in 913 by Castilian Christians on the position of an Abbadid Muslim residential fortress which was ruined after the Christian invasion of Seville. The higher levels of the Alcázar are still lived in by the royal family. It is the oldest royal palace still made use of in Europe, and was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The highlight of the castle is its intricate carvings inscribed into the stonewalls and the lush gardens with fruit trees, horticultural produce and a broad selection of aromatic flowers. The garden orchards not only provided food for the palace residents but had the artistic function of bringing delight to the eyes. Water was ever in attendance in the form of jets, irrigation channels, pools, runnels, and ponds.

Tourists that are tired of wandering around the palace are given the option of partaking in activities and events held there which are planned by the Royal Alcazar Board of Patronage and the Town Hall.

The tram or also known as the 'tranvia' goes south from Plaza Nueva (the center of the city) and has four stops , covering an overall distance of 1.4km . It operates from 6AM to 1.30AM .

You can purchase a ticket for €1.20 at any station. A more cost-effective selection is the combined bus/tram rechargeable pass , Tarjeta Multiuso.

5. Castillo Arabe

Stated a National Monument in 1931 and positioned on the "Cerro de las Torres" , Castillo Arab was built by the Arabs dating back to the Phoenician and Roman period. It is an enclosed space with a pointed horseshoe arch.

Situated at the bottom of the hill, what was left over fort was intensely protected by Muslims according to history. According to legend, there are tales where historians speak of how Emir Muhammad IX locked up his daughters in the fort.

To receive full benefit of the monument, do visit the ancient Muslim Bridge before mountaineering up the Castillo Arabe to realize the valor of Muslims defensive schemes along with appreciating the breath-taking view as you walk the ruins of this fort and ponder over the history of the Castillo Arabe, which dated back from the 12th century onwards.

Malaga is well-known for their Bike Taxis (Trixis) . Trixis is a quick way to see Malaga City. You are entirely covered , so a bike taxi is decent for an all-weather travel option as well as a transport system to this location which happens to be in Malaga as well. Prices are set at €9 per person, but they differ according to how far you go and which company you book it through .

Tourists visiting Castillo Arabe can also get there via the local train named Alhameda which is located on the Explanada de la Estacion near the CAC museum.

6. Alhambra Palace

Located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain, The Alhambra or also known as "a pearl set in emeralds" is a palace and fortress and is deemed as one of Spain's chief tourist attractions, portraying the country's most noteworthy and well-known Islamic architecture .

It was initially constructed as a small fortress in AD 889 on the remnants of Roman fortifications and rebuilt in the mid-13th century by the Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada. It was transformed into a royal fort in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. The castle was set as a military fortress due to its tactical position , overlooking the complete city.

The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the muse for several songs and stories.

The adornment consists of Arabic inscriptions that are emblazoned into geometrical molds. Tile mosaics with intricate mathematical patterns are principally used as paneling for the lower part.

Apart from its historical reference, there are a vast amount of different sites to see – ranging from the Alcazaba and the palaces, the Hall of the Boat, the building of the Baths, Patio of the Lions, to the Comares Room and the Justice Gate.

Pro Tip: Due to the overcrowding of tourists for the period of the peak summer season , it would be advisable to book the tours and tickets beforehand to avoid disappointment. Ideally, it would be best to visit during winter to steer clear of the crowds.

Don't forget to beat the hydration with a bottle of water for your travels! Do bear in mind that you must clearly state to your ticket vendor as to what time you favor to go on your tour . Punctuality is a must as late arrival will not be tolerated.

You can take the red minibus Alhambra Bus C3 , which departs every 10 minutes from the Plaza Nueva to the Alhambra. The stop where you need to watch out for is called 'Generalife'.

A ticket is €1.20 and can be bought directly on the bus itself. If you plan to stay in Granada for a few extra days and will be traveling by bus seven or more times , it would be a wise option to invest in a Travel Card called Bonobos , which will make your traveling expenses more economical.

From the hub of Granada, a taxi would cost around €6 to €8 . From the bus station in Granada, it would be approximately €10 to €12

The cars are not permitted to come into the Alhambra but there is  parking next to the monument.  The fee is approximately €2.50/hour.

7. The Viana Palace

Fan of architecture and interior designing? The Viana Palace should be your next go-to spot!

Constructed in the 15th century and home to Marquiasate of Villasica , this noble home, will enable tourists to gain first hand knowledge and experience of what a traditional home of aristocrats looks like.

The interior being exquisite and unlike anything other, radiates how life was back in the day, allowing you to feel like you have transported yourself back in time!

Another plus point would be that this spot is not always brimming with tourists compared to the other landmarks around Spain, so it is more convenient to navigate yourself more peacefully.

It has a library with more than seven thousand volumes and collections of Flemish and Goyesque tapestries; silverware Cordoba; carpets; 17th-century furniture; porcelain etc.

One of its grand attractions is its 12 good-looking courtyards, all connected as one, decorated with a vast variety of flora.

Along with being one of the cheapest options, the bus is the preferred mode of transport by most people in Córdoba and to this spot. The price of a ticket is €1.30 (one-way) but if you need to travel by bus often, I suggest you buy a Bonobús pass in order to save money.

Address: Plaza de don Gome, 2 14001 Córdoba Opening Hours: Winter Season (September 1 onwards)                          10AM to 7PM (Tue-Sat)                          10AM to 3PM (Sun)                          Closed on Mondays                          10AM to 7PM (October 12)                          11AM to 8PM (October 19 - October 28)                          Summer Season (July & August)                          9AM to 3PM (Tue-Sun)                          Closed on Mondays Ticket Price: €8 (Full Visit) | €5 (Patio-only Visit)                     Free (Wednesdays from 2PM to 5PM)                     (Refer here for more information) Contact: (+34) 957 49 67 41 Website: www.palaciodeviana.com

8. Mezquita del Cristo de la (Mosque of Christ of the Light)

Being a former mosque in Toledo, Spain, Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz existed in the city in the Moorish period. The construction was then known as Mezquita Bab-al-Mardum , deriving its name from the city gate Bab al-Mardum. Having dated back from the 10th century, it's a standard Moorish monumen t to stand still till today.

Keep a watch out for the Arabic writings on the south-west end that showcases the history of how the mosque changed over time. The antique building is an interesting mix of cultures. The pillars and horseshoe arches outline nine different sections , each contributing intricate geometrical designs.

A train and bus station is within a 2km radius of the Mosque . Tourists can even get a rental car on hire or a taxi for those travelling from Madrid to Toledo.

9. Cathedral of Seville - Santa Maria de la Sede Cathedral

Having an area of 11,520 m² , The Cathedral of Seville , or more publicly known as Santa Maria de la Sede Cathedral was and still is one of the largest gothic cathedrals in the world.

It was the principal city of the Umayyad Caliphate from the 8th to the 13th centuries until when Seville was captured by the Christians in the 12th century, they decided to utilize the mosque as a church.

The construction workers conserved a few features from the antique mosque such as the mosque's sahn, which is, the quad for ablutions that is recognized today as the Patio de los Naranjos . It consists of a fountain and orange trees. Not forgetting the most well-known Minaret, which was changed into a bell tower named as La Giralda.

Cathedral Organ

The inside has the longest nave of any cathedral in Spain. The innermost nave ascends to a height of 42 meters. In the heart of the cathedral, the most evident features are the grand boxlike choir loft , which takes up the mid segment of the nave and the vast Gothic retablo of engraved scenes from the life of Christ . This altarpiece was the work of Pierre Dancart, a craftsman who accomplished this masterpiece single-handedly.

Considering how tourists have so much foot action to put into if they wish to cover the vast area, it would be advisable to carry along some snacks as well as water to stay hydrated (Don't forget those comfortable shoes! Slippers and sandals would be a definite no-no)

You can get to the Cathedral of Seville (Catedral de Sevilla) by Bus, Metro or Train . Following are the lines and routes that have stops nearby.

Bus: 21, 37, C1, C4

10. Calahorra Tower

Deriving from the Islamic origin, The Calahorra Tower is a gate in the historic center of Córdoba, Spain. Initially built by the Moors and afterward re-instated by King Enrique II in 1369, an additional tower was added to the gate to unite the older two.

Tourists can witness the renowned tale of the Christians, Muslims, and Jews living in good-natured tranquillity at the time of the reign during the adventure through the tower.

The monumental treasure placed right now was formerly used as a defense boundary from attacks. It was then transformed to a prison and a girls' school.

The museum conserves artifacts that display the livelihoods of three different religions in the form of documents and pictures , enabling tourists to peek a glance into lifestyles of that era.

Tourists have the option of utilizing the railway method, via Cordoba Railway Station, or the bus via Estación de autobuses interurbanos de córdoba for traveling purposes which is within a 2 km radius of the attraction.

Address: Calahorra Tower, Puente Romano s / n, 14009 - Córdoba (Spain) Opening Hours: Winter Season (October 1 to April 30)                          10AM to 6PM (Mon-Sun)                           Summer Season (May 1 to September 30)                          10AM to 2PM | 4.30PM to 8.30PM (Mon-Sun) Ticket Price: €4.50                     (Refer here for more ticket options) Contact: +34 957 293 929 Website: www.torrecalahorra.es

11. La Madraza Granada

Founded in 1349 by the Nasrid monarch Yusuf I , Sultan of Granada , The Madrasah of Granada is a mosque/school in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. The subjects taught were theology, law medicine, astronomy, logic, mathematics, geometry, and mechanics.

The building was impressive like the other works of Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada, with a white marble access, the remains which are now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Granada.

The façade of the 18th-century building was bedecked with inscriptions of poetry and philosophy . The mihrab derives from the 14th century.

The construction, which is under the ownership to the University of Granada, underwent a widespread of archeological excavations in 2006–2007 later on re-opening to the public in 2011.

As a substitute to the AVE, there are also inexpensive RENFE trains, such us the Lanzaderas to Seville and Malaga (for around €15 to €20) or the Altaria and the Alivia trains heading to Granada ( 2 hours 30 minutes ) and Madrid ( 2 hours 30 minutes ). You can refer to the Renfe for schedules, prices, and tickets.

If you are heading to this spot from a far-off location in Spain you can arrive by air. Granada has an airport positioned 12km west of the city. Frequent buses travel from Seville, Málaga, Madrid, and Cordoba as well.

The bus station is placed about 2 miles from the city center. It takes not more than 10 minutes by bus (local bus SN1, €1.20 one way), or 30 min if you choose walking to get to the train station.

Driving in Granada is an absolute nightmare that is best avoided at all costs. The central district is chaos due to its narrow, one-way streets and is restricted to buses, taxis, and scooters.

Address: Espacio V Centenario, Avda. Madrid, s / n, 18071 Granada - Spain Opening Hours: 10.30AM to 1PM (Mon-Sun) Website: lamadraza.ugr.es

  • Halal Butcher: Carnicería Albaicin - Calderería Vieja 16, Albaicin
  • Churreria Desi - Acera del Darro and Calle Palencia 20, Zaidin
  • Halal Tapas - Om Khalsoum on Calle Jardines

Some overall guidelines to follow:

During the months of June-August, summer hits Spain, attracting crowds of tourists into the country. It's best not to go during these months due to the scorching climate and the inflationary accommodation prices and tour dates.

If you choose summer for your travels in Spain then it would be time to pull out those light and airy cott on clothes along with a couple of loose jeans and a good pair of shoes as you will have a lot of walking to do!

The ideal time to visit would be during the months of spring and autumn, March-April/October-November, as the mild weather is easier to deal with (let's not forget the lesser crowds too!)

Due to the months of winter (November – February) being off-season months,  many of the tours and sites close operations.

If you do plan to visit during these months it would be ideal to check availability beforehand. In the case of clothing, due to obvious reasons jackets, raincoats, shoes and plenty of warm clothing is a must, unless you happen to be a fan of frostbite.

The Grand Friday Mosque is the largest mosque in the Maldives. — Visit Maldives

Based on a report by the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) in 2023, Muslim travellers’ estimated expenditure is projected to reach US$225bil (RM1.069 trillion) globally by 2028, with visitor arrivals reaching 230 million.

This is unsurprising considering the traction that halal tourism or Muslim-friendly travels have been gaining in the past decade or so. Momentarily halted by the pandemic, now the tourism industry is picking up again and travellers are eager to resume exploring the world.

It was reported that Muslim international arrivals reached 110 million in 2022, and are expected to match the pre-pandemic or 2019 figures of 160 million by this year.

As the market grew, offerings have also started to diversify in the Muslim travel sphere. Some travellers may seek only halal food, praying amenities and halal accommodations while they enjoy the standard attractions (think water parks, theme parks and the likes). But there are also those who seek, on top of the basic requirements, specific attractions that will broaden their knowledge and appreciation of their Muslim heritage.

If you’re one such traveller who appreciates the value of visiting mosques, shrines and historical sites with Islamic roots, then you may just want to visit these destinations that will offer you plenty to do and see, topped with an unexpected wealth of Muslim-oriented places of interest.

In Spain, Alcazaba of Badajoz’s history dates back to the 9th century. — DIEGO DELSO/Wikimedia Commons

In 2022, Spain was the proud recipient of the Halal In Travel Awards’ “Top Muslim-Friendly Emerging Destination” accolade.

Andalusia, one of Spain’s autonomous communities with the highest Muslim population, is understandably popular among Muslim tourists. It’s a place rich with Islamic heritage, from the Alhambra Palace (cover pic) in Granada and the Medina Azahara in Cordoba, to the Royal Alcazar in Seville.

However, in recent years, there have been ramped up efforts to promote Islamic heritage in other parts of Spain as well. The landlocked Extremadura, which borders Portugal, is one such example.

The eponymous capital city of Badajoz is home to one of the country’s most important historical monuments: Alcazaba of Badajoz. The citadel was founded by Ibn Marwan in 875, but it was only in the 12th century that it took on the appearance that it has now, following construction done by the Almohads.

Located within the citadel is the Archaeological Museum, where you can learn more about the province’s history through archaeology.

Another province in Extremadura is Caceres, which is also a significant historical area. Its capital city of the same name, a World Heritage City, also saw fortifications made by the Almohads that remain standing to this day.

For instance, the 1,174m-long wall that surrounds the historic Old Town of Caceres. Take a stroll along the Adarve or wall-walk to take in the sights of the city without fear of getting lost. As you wander, you will see the three towers that once served as watchtowers: Torre del Horno, Torre de Bujaco and Torre de la Hierba (also spelled Yerba).

With just 298sq km of land area, the Republic Of Maldives in the Indian Ocean is the smallest country in Asia. Its territory expands to 90,000sq km when factoring in the sea, which forms 99.6% of the island nation.

Turquoise waters, white beaches and overwater bungalows are synonymous with the Maldives. But venture to its vibrant capital Male, on the North Male Atoll, and you will see another interesting side to this tropical paradise.

One of the most densely populated cities in the world, Male features narrow streets lined with high-rise buildings. Amid these, you will find more than 30 mosques. These places of worship were traditionally made from coral stone.

Placed on the Unesco World Heritage Tentative List are six mosques collectively known as the Coral Stone Mosques of Maldives: Ihavandhoo Friday Mosque, Meedhoo Friday Mosque, Male Friday Mosque, Male Eid Mosque, Fenfushi Friday Mosque and Isdhoo Old Mosque.

Meanwhile, the Grand Friday Mosque is a more modern iteration with a stark white marble façade that belies the intricate wood carvings, lacquer work and Arabic scriptures within.

It is the biggest mosque in Maldives that’s able to accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers.

Malaysia, along with other nations such as Brunei and Pakistan, lent a hand in building the mosque that is easily identified – even from afar – by its towering golden dome.

Since Maldives is a 100% Muslim country (it requires citizens to be Muslim), rest assured that you will not encounter in its capital any alcohol offerings (these are only allowed within licensed areas such as resorts and cruise boats).

Visitors here are also advised to dress modestly, though activewear and swimwear are fine.

Other than mosque visits, other activities you can do on North Male Atoll include submarine tours, dolphin cruise, visiting the Male markets (one sells only fruit and vegetables, no meat products, while the other sells fresh seafood) and, of course, island hopping.

The Basilan Provincial Capitol was built to commemorate religious influences that shaped Basilan in the Philippines today. — RON RAMOS/Wikimedia Commons

A year after Spain’s win, the Philippines was next to be named Halal In Travel Awards’ Top Muslim-Friendly Emerging Destination.

The city of Zamboanga in the Zamboanga Peninsula, which has a large Muslim population, is among the Philippines’ destinations that is rapidly gaining popularity with Muslim travellers, as it offers a fascinating mix of sights and activities.

In the city’s Taluksangay Barangay, you will find the Taluksangay Mosque. Constructed in 1885 by Hadji Abdullah Maas Nuno, this is said to be the oldest mosque in the region. The religious site can be easily distinguished by its red roof and the minarets surrounding it.

About an hour’s drive from the historical mosque is the Yakan Weaving Village, where you can purchase colourful fabric that have been handwoven using the traditional weaving techniques of the Yakan people, said to be the original indigenous Muslim settlers of Basilan. Bags, seputangan (a square cloth used as head scarf or sash) and other forms of accessories and souvenirs are also sold here.

Basilan, located off the southern coast of Zamboanga Peninsula, has a series of places worth visiting. Its Basilan Provincial Capitol was built to celebrate the religious influences of Islam and Christianity that played a key role in forming the city today.

Previously standing on the site were Fort Isabela II and the Basilan City Hall. The former was destroyed during World War II, and the latter was devoured by fire back in the early 1990s.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a short nature retreat to include in your itinerary, the Great Santa Cruz Island is a slice of holiday paradise featuring pink sand beaches. This unique feature is caused by red corals (organ pipe corals). However, visitors have to book ahead with the City Tourism Office, as only a limited number of visitors are allowed onto the island each day.

Hazratbal Shrine is the only domed mosque (the other mosques are pagoda-like) in Srinagar, India. — ABDULLA NASAR/Wikimedia Commons

According to the World Population Review, India sits third in the ranking of top 10 countries with the largest number of Muslims, totalling 200 million. That makes up 13.87% of the South Asian nation’s total population, which stands at 1.44 billion as of January 2024.

A mention of India as a Muslim holiday destination might conjure up the image of Taj Mahal in your mind. Understandably so, since the majestic mausoleum is a Unesco World Heritage Site described as “the jewel of Muslim art in India”.

But there is more to the country than that. Take Kashmir for instance. The Muslim majority region is renowned for its mountainous peaks, verdant valleys and tranquil lakes. Don’t let the territorial conflict deter you from visiting this picturesque place, as it has been deemed a safe place for tourists.

Although as always, do practice caution when visiting, same as you would in any other country. Kashmir is also home to the Hazratbal Shrine. Situated on the left bank of Srinagar’s Dal Lake, the white marble mosque is revered because housed within it is the holy relic “Moi-e-Muqaddas”, a strand of Prophet Muhammad’s beard. You may visit Hazratbal Shrine from 9.30am to 5.30pm daily, but do note that photography is not allowed in the main sanctum.

Another destination in India that you can explore is Mysore, or Mysuru, down south in Karnataka. With its second largest population being Muslim, after Hindu, the city has plenty of halal food, Muslim-friendly facilities and several mosques to cater to Muslim travellers.

Nicknamed “City Of Palaces”, Mysore boasts seven stunning former royal residencies that now serve as an iconic landmark (Mysore Palace), hotels (Lalitha Mahal Palace, Rajendra Vilas Palace, Chittaranjan Palace), museums (Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion which houses the General, Folklore and Archaeology Museums), an art gallery (Jaganmohan Palace) and even a research institute (Cheluvamba Mansion).

The centuries-old Afaq Khoja Mausoleum is a unique attraction in Xinjiang, China. — DAVID STANLEY/Wikimedia Commons

Xinjiang is a Muslim-dominated region in China with a large population of Uyghur people and other ethnic minorities. Aside from its sweeping desert plains and rolling mountains, what you can also experience here is its colourful Muslim heritage.

One such destination that illustrates this is the old city of Kashgar – located in its heart is the Yusuf Khass Hajib Mausoleum. Interred within are the remains of the eponymous 11th-century Muslim poet and philosopher from Kyrgyzstan. He died in 1077, but the burial structure was only built – to pay tribute to his life – hundreds of years after his passing.

Over in Haohan Village, you can visit the 384-year-old Afaq Khoja Mausoleum, named after a religious and political leader renowned in the Uyghur communities. The tomb was originally constructed for his father, who was also an important figure, but today it is the resting place for five generations of the Afaqi family, including Afaq Khoja.

In Urumqi, Shaanxi Great Mosque and the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar will be among the highlights of your trip. Located on the South Heping Road, the mosque has been around since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Take the opportunity to marvel at its architectural beauty, which incorporates traditional Chinese style featuring wooden structures.

Meanwhile, occupying over 10ha (inclusive of an observation tower and a mosque) is the Grand Bazaar that comes alive with some 3,000 handicraft stores.

You will also come across stalls selling local delicacies and other special commodities, such as clothes and knives.

If it’s traditional handicraft by Uyghur artisans that you seek, head to Gaotay Village where crafting skills are handed down as heirlooms through generations. You will even find traditional musical instruments during your visit to the village, which is surrounded by ancient dwellings and from afar, the khaki-coloured houses appear as if they are built on top of one another.
