2024 Tony Awards: ‘Stereophonic’ and ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ lead nominations
- Show more sharing options

Amid a particularly crowded Broadway season of new plays and musicals, “Stereophonic” and “Hell’s Kitchen” rose to the top as the most-nominated productions for the 2024 Tony Awards on Tuesday morning.
David Adjmi’s play about a 1970s band recording an album and Alicia’s Keys’ musical recounting her New York upbringing each earned 13 nominations.
Announced live on CBS and on YouTube by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry, the nominations kicked off with the best musical category, in which “Hell’s Kitchen” is joined by “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” “Suffs” and “Water for Elephants.” The best play category includes “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” “Prayer for the French Republic,” “Stereophonic,” “Mary Jane” and “Mother Play.”
Best musical revival will be a competition among “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” “Merrily We Roll Along,” “The Who’s Tommy” and “Gutenberg! The Musical!” The best play revival nominees are “Appropriate,” “An Enemy of the People” and “Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch.”
Marquee names receiving acting nominations include William Jackson Harper for “Uncle Vanya,” Eddie Redmayne for “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” Jessica Lange and Jim Parsons for “Mother Play,” Rachel McAdams for “Mary Jane,” Leslie Odom Jr. for “Purlie Victorious,” Daniel Radcliffe for “Merrily We Roll Along,” Sarah Paulson and Corey Stoll for “Appropriate,” Liev Schreiber for “Doubt: A Parable,” Jeremy Strong for “An Enemy of the People” and Michael Stuhlbarg for “Patriots.”
A number of well-known recording artists received nominations for their musical contributions as well: Arcade Fire’s Will Butler for “Stereophonic,” David Byrne for “Here Lies Love,” and Jamestown Revival for “The Outsiders.”
And among the first-time Tony nominees this year are producers Keys for “Hell’s Kitchen,” Angelina Jolie for “The Outsiders” and Hillary Rodham Clinton for “Suffs.”
The 77th Tony Awards, to be hosted again by Ariana DeBose, will take place June 16 at the David H. Koch Theater at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. The ceremony, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+. To be considered for awards, productions must have opened between April 28, 2023, and April 25, 2024.
After two ‘catastrophic’ years for Broadway, have the Tonys become too big to fail?
The threat to this year’s Tonys underscored their sway over the industry. Some say making them the ‘be-all, end-all’ of shows’ survival is risky business.
