JAPAN VISA: LIST OF TRAVEL AGENCIES Accredited by the Embassy

Because of the sheer volume of applications, the Japanese Embassy doesn’t accept direct or walk-in applications, except in rare special cases. Instead, tourist and visit visa applications must be coursed through an officially designated travel agency, which will then compile and submit the applications in bulk.

The downside of this system, of course, is the service fee. The embassy’s processing of the visa is FREE-OF-CHARGE. But the travel agency will collect a service charge per application. But this system has ensured a fast, efficient way to process visa applications. In fact, the Korean Embassy has followed suit and employed a similar model recently. The fee varies from agency to agency, so if budget is a concern, contact them before showing up at their office.

I was just wondering if you were able to verify Universal Holiday’s Cebu branch ‘coz I am seeing a Cebu branch in their site but it is not listed in your page nor in the official site. I have tried this branch before and would really like to use their service again.

Hi Mat, I think legit naman sya kasi yung accreditation ng Japan Embassy yata ay per company, hindi per branch. So since accredited yung Universal Holiday, most likely kasama lahat ng branches nila.

Update! I applied for multiple entry at the Cebu branch and thankfully na.approve naman. I asked them why they were not listed and I think it has something to do with limitation of what type of visa they were allowed to apply. Nakalimutan ko ano exactly yun. Hehehe. Yung inaply ko tourist visa w/o sponsor which is pwd nila i.process.

Hello! Do I really need to apply a Japan visa in an accredited travel agency?

All applications will go through an accredited agency. But you can apply at other non-accredited agencies, but they will still course it through an accredited agency rin so mas mahal sya.

Hi For the visa application, since I just had my passport renewed, and of course it is all empty though i had made multiple travels in the past 5 years and it is all in the old passport. What can you advise for such? Would it matter if my new passport is empty? or should i send in also the copy of my old one? just to show that i have record of my old trips?

Hi Nel, I can’t say for sure because I had a different experience each time I applied. There was a time when the agency also took my old passport too. There were also times when they did not. So I’m not sure what the protocol is.

My advice is to just bring your old passport when you visit the agency and ask them for their reco. :D

Hi Charmaine, I haven’t tried something like this, so I don’t know for sure. But the biggest challenge here is proving the relationship.

According to the travel agency we consulted before, it’s still better if the sponsor is a close relative because you can easily prove the relationship using birth certificates.

Hi ian, ang alam ko po, if kayo ung sasagot ng gastos, no need na for your wife and child. Basta same time kayo mag-apply.

Yung experience ko po kasi nung sinagot ko ung trip ng nanay ko and pamangkin ko, documents ko lang po ung sinubmit.

Pero tawag na lang din po kayo sa agency kung saan kayo mag-apply to be safe.

Depends on agency and type of visa. Tourist visas usually range P700-1000, Visit visas P1500-P2000. Call the agency where you plan to apply to be certain.

Accredited agencies are agencies that directly submit visa application to our office. Registered agencies are those allowed to handle package tours for Japan and they need to submit the applications to any of our accredited agencies.

Buffet breakfast was really good and there are other restaurants to choose from within the hotel as alternative. Room is not that big but adequate enough, room service, staff, cleanliness and amenities made our stay pleasant. Lunch and dinner included in the package in local restaurants were good as well although some joiners were not satisfied on our last dinner which they served ramen. For me, its okay since they could have thought of it for variation of food.

Our Japanese tour guide and tour leaders coordinated themselves well making sure that whats in the itenerary are followed. Though we didn’t get the chance to try their local train as specified in the flyer instead rode a bus to go from one place to another. A large group like ours may be the reason for some changes. Anyway, not a big deal for not able to experience the train ride.

The experience was awesome in general and I definitely recommend this to first time visitors to Japan. The tour cost of 988usd can be considered a little expensive but my take on this is that….its worth it! If I am to rate my overall Japan tour experience in a scale of 1 to 10 and 10 being the highest, I give it a 9.

My Japan Visa Application Approved — Here are 5 Steps for Filipinos

Yay! You don’t know how happy I was when I got my Japan tourist visa. It only took three (3) working days for me to claim my Philippine passport with an attached single-entry Japan tourist visa. I know how overwhelming it is to complete the Japan visa requirements, especially for first-timers. So, I’ve come up with an easy-to-follow Japan visa application guide for Filipinos who wish to travel to the Land of the Rising Sun!

Step 1: Know your visa type and gather your Japan visa requirements

There are actually a number of Japan visa types , each with different sets of Japan visa requirements. As for me, I applied for a Japan visa for Tourism (Temporary Visitor).

Japan tourist visa requirements that I submitted are:

• My Philippine Passport (with more than 6 months validity)
• Japan Visa Application Form
• Photo  (4.5cm × 3.5cm, with white background and taken within 6 months)
• PSA Birth Certificate (issued within one year)
• Daily Schedule in Japan (download this Schedule of Stay form )
• Bank Certificate
• Cover Letter to explain my Japan visa application without ITR
• Certificate of Employment (optional)

Step 2: Fill out the Japan visa application form

Download this new Japan visa application form and fill out the required fields such as complete name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, nationality, passport number, etc.

Step 3: Submit your Japan tourist visa requirements to an accredited travel agency

Submit your Japan visa requirements to any of the accredited travel agencies in the Philippines . As for me, I chose RELI Tours & Travel in SM Megamall since this was the nearest location by the time I applied for my Japan visa. They have 6 branches in Metro Manila: SM Megamall, SM Mall Of Asia, SM Southmall, Hotel Dusit Thani, ANTEL, and Lucky Chinatown.

Once you are in the travel agency office, get a priority number and wait for your turn. A travel agent will then thoroughly check your Japan visa requirements and ask for clarifications when needed before you pay the Japan visa handling fee.

Step 4: Pay the Japan visa fees

Actually, the Japan visa fee for Filipinos is gratis , meaning it is FREE. What you will be paying is the agency’s handling fee, which varies from ₱800 to ₱2,000, depending on the travel agency and visa type. RELI Tours & Travel charges ₱950 for a single entry or multiple entry Japan tourist visa without guarantor (1-B), and ₱2,000 for those visiting friends and distant relatives in Japan (1-A).

Step 5: Wait for the Japan visa processing time and claim your passport

The estimated Japan visa processing time takes about five (5) working days. Surprisingly, the travel agency texted me that my passport was ready for pick up after three (3) working days from my date of application.

Japan visa FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions):

1. can someone process my japan visa application on my behalf.

If you are unable to process your own Japan visa, you may ask someone to apply for you given he or she has an authorization letter with your signature and ID as proof. Direct family members such as parents and siblings can also process your Japan visa without an authorization letter.

2. Do travel agencies offer courier services for my Japan visa?

Yes, some travel agencies offer a courier service for your Japan visa. RELI Tours & Travel has this option. Please check their Japan visa courier service for more information.

3. Are flight tickets and hotel bookings needed?

Proofs of confirmed flights and accommodations are not required for your Japan visa application, but they can be part of your supporting documents. Also, you will have to indicate your planned airline and hotel addresses in the application form even though you haven’t made any bookings yet.

Tip: You can reserve your Japan accommodation from Klook or Agoda . Some hotels offer flexible cancellation arrangements where you can cancel your booking free of charge. So if your Japan visa gets denied, you can be at ease knowing you haven’t spent anything on your hotel bookings yet.

4. What other supporting documents can I submit?

Other supporting documents you may submit are credit card statements, proof of owned properties or businesses, a cover letter, and certificate of employment.

5. Should I buy a JR Pass ahead and submit it as one of my supporting documents?

The Japan Rail Pass or JR Pass is not a required document. I would recommend that you buy it once your visa is approved. As the train system in Japan is quite expensive, it is ideal to buy the JR Pass before you enter Japan and NOT before your Japan visa application.

Tip: Klook offers different kinds of JR Passes, but if you intend to cross different regions in Japan, I suggest that you buy the JR Whole Japan Rail Pass (Consecutive 7, 14, or 21 Days) . We somehow regretted not purchasing the JR Pass online before travelling to Japan. It could have minimised our total travel cost in Japan.

6. If I completed all requirements, will this guarantee my approval?

Submission of complete requirements does not guarantee the issuance of your Japan visa. However, this will give you higher chances of approval. You may also read our tips on how to increase your chances of visa approval .

7. If my Japan visa requirements are incomplete, will I get denied?

Not all the time. Some applicants still get approved with incomplete documents. It is a case-by-case basis.

8. Can I still apply for a Japan visa without ITR (Income Tax Return)?

Yes you can. Just like what I did, you can write a letter of explanation on why you have no ITR for your Japan visa requirements. See my Japan visa without ITR sample letter of explanation . Also, here’s how I got my Korean visa without ITR  for your reference.

9. Can I DIY my Japan visa application?

No. All Japan visa applications must be coursed through an accredited travel agency. Here is a complete list of accredited travel agencies by the Japan Embassy .

10. Can first-timers apply for a multiple-entry Japan visa?

Yes. First-timers may apply for a multiple-entry Japan visa if eligible. Check out the multiple-entry Japan visa requirements for tourists.

11. When should I apply for a Japan visa prior to my travel period?

While the Japan visa processing time can only take up to five (5) working days, it is safe to apply for your Japan visa a month or two prior to your intended travel dates.

12. Will there be an interview?

In some instances, you may be called for a personal appearance, especially when the embassy has clarifications about your application.

13. When can I follow up on my application?

You may follow up on your application if your passport has not been returned after more than a week. Get an 8-digit acceptance number from your travel agency and inquire about the status of your Japan visa application at the embassy itself.

14. Can I get back my Japan tourist visa requirements after the application?

No. All submitted documents will not be returned to you regardless of the outcome. Only your passport will be returned to you with a Japan visa pasted on one page if approved.

15. If I get denied, when can I apply for a Japan visa again?

You can only re-apply after six (6) months.

16. Can I still make an appeal to reconsider my Japan visa application?

The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines clearly states that you can only re-apply for the same purpose after six (6) months. However, I found a Japan visa appeal story in 2017 and another one in 2019  wherein both applicants appealed in less than a month, transferred to a different travel agency, and submitted a letter of appeal and additional supporting documents such as confirmed flights , hotel booking , and guarantee letter. Do note that as of this writing, there are no recent accounts saying that an appeal is plausible.

Benefits of applying through poea-accredited agencies.

An accreditation from the POEA (now DMW or the Department of Migrant Workers) allows a foreign business to recruit Filipino workers through licensed recruitment agencies. Through this, the POEA can protect OFWs from substandard labor practices and scams such as identity theft and illegal recruitment 1 .  

The licenses issued are only valid for four years and can be revoked by DMW before expiration. Check the DMW’s agency database to see if the agency still has a valid license. 

There are several benefits of going through a POEA-accredited recruitment agency when applying for a job in Japan, such as the following: 

• It is much less likely to be scammed or hired by an abusive employer. 
• Several of these recruitment agencies have built a rapport with many foreign employers which can help improve your chances of getting the job. 
• They can easily guide you through the whole process so you don’t miss out on important details. 
• In a dispute, the DMW has the authority to require the recruitment agency to refund a portion of your money and return your papers. 
• You can contact the DMW if you are approached by an agency that asks you to engage in illegal or suspicious activity. 

How POEA/DMW Validates Job Orders

When foreign companies seek Filipino employees, they go through accredited recruitment agencies, which send them to the DMW for assessment and approval. The DMW screens these job postings and issues a job order once it has been verified to be a legitimate job opening void of suspicion. As a job applicant, you can now apply for the job opening with the approved job order.  

But be careful. Jobs from previous work orders may no longer be available. Use the DMW website to look for jobs from the latest job order. Job order details include the date of submission, the names of each position, and the number of positions available.

How To Apply for Jobs in Japan Through POEA-Accredited Agencies: 8 Steps

Now that you know the advantages of going through an accredited agency, here’s a step-by-step guide on what you need to do so that you can chase after your dream job in Japan.

1. Search for a job position in the DMW database

You can use the DMW database for an in-depth search of the latest job orders from Japan. Choose “Job Site” from the list of search categories in the drop-down box. Input the country name (which, in this case, is Japan) in the search box next to it. Finally, click the Search button and wait for the page to display the latest job orders, specifically from Japan.

You can easily sort the order of information on the database to find your ideal job. Select any of the available options on their database: 

• Sort by Date JO was Approved . Looking at the newest job orders approved by the DMW is helpful. 
• Sort by Agency . This option presents you with the list of approved job orders sorted by the agency name, arranged alphabetically. This filter is helpful if you’re looking for a job order under a specific recruitment agency. 
• Sort by Position . This arranges the list alphabetically based on the name of the position. This is an excellent option if you want to apply for a specific job position. 
• Sort by JO Balance or the number of vacancies available for each position. The more vacancies there are for a particular job, the more chances you have of getting that position.

If you don’t find the job you are looking for, you can check back again some other day. The database is regularly updated and maintained by the DMW. 

2. Make a list of the job orders

Once you’ve figured out how to use the DMW database, it’s a good time to create a shortlist of all the ideal job positions you want to apply for. You can filter easier by using the Sort by Position function on the DMW database. After using the filter, you should then: 

• Check the job order approval date . The newest approved job orders are the most likely to have positions available. 
• Check the number of open positions in the job order (i.e., JO Balance). The higher the number of available posts, the higher your chance of being accommodated by the employer and getting hired. 

For example, if you want to apply for a position as an English teacher, make a shortlist of all the job orders based on the date and number of vacancies available using the Sort by Position function. This will help you narrow your search for viable opportunities that can lead to a job you want.

3. Do research on the jobs that you want to apply for

To better understand your qualifications for a specific job, you can check out a few online job boards, including jobsinjapan.com , gaijinpot.com , careercross.com , and daijob.com. Most of these websites will provide several job postings containing important information about the job you aim for, like job description, expected salary, job requirements, location, and other pertinent details.

4. Check if the POEA-accredited agency has a valid license

You can verify this by searching for the agency’s name in the new DMW agency database and checking the status and license validity dates.

5. Do research on the agency

More than 150 recruitment agencies currently have job orders for job postings in Japan. Similar to job hunting, looking for an agency that can address your needs can go a long way in helping you land the job that you want.

It is recommended that you visit the agencies’ official websites and social media accounts for more information on them, such as: 

• Contact details and location 
• Application and recruitment process 
• Fees (if any) 
• Support services they provide to OFWs 
• Reviews from other people who have experience working with the agency 

6. Contact the POEA-Accredited Agency

Contact your chosen accredited agency and get all the relevant information, requirements, and documents you need before you visit their office. 

7. Update your resume and portfolio

This is your time to put your best foot forward and showcase how your talents and expertise meet the job requirements. To have a better chance of getting hired, you can do the following: 

• Learn more about potential employers, their values, and the job’s requirements . You can do this by visiting their official website and social media accounts. 
• Create a customized cover letter and resume . When you personalize your cover letter, it will let the agency know that you’ve adequately prepared for getting the job. Remember to highlight your most outstanding achievements and strengths to leave an excellent first impression and stand out.
• Prepare for your interview. You can do this by listing relevant topics and questions that the interviewer might bring up so that you’re prepared to answer them. It would be best to consider listing your questions for the employer. This shows them your enthusiasm and that you have a genuine interest in performing well at the job.  
• Start practicing your Nihongo . Though some jobs do not require you to speak Japanese, learning Nihongo is a distinct advantage. What Are the Requirements for Getting a Job in Japan Through POEA-Accredited Agencies?

Depending on the job you’re applying for, you may be required by the employer to show specific documents or credentials to prove that you’re fit for the job. Some of the most common job-specific qualifications include: 

• JLPT is the most widely known and recognized certification of Japanese language proficiency. The levels range from N1 to N5, with N5 being the easiest and N1 the hardest. Obtaining a JLPT accreditation is not a legal requirement for a visa or a hard requirement for many jobs in Japan. However, those with 70 points or higher get preferential treatment at immigration. A JLPT accreditation is also concrete proof to an employer of your Japanese language aptitude, which can help hire you. 
• University Degree – Depending on the job you’re applying for, some companies have a hard rule of requiring a four-year degree from a university. It’s always a good idea to double-check with the recruitment agency. 
• Others – There may be other job-specific requirements that your employer may ask for, such as TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). As always, it would be prudent to ask the recruitment agency.

Every foreigner who comes to Japan for employment needs a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) 2 from the Immigration Services in Japan. Your employer should be in charge of getting a COE application on your behalf. This is also a prerequisite before applying for a Japanese work visa.

Working visas are classified by the kind of work or profession the applicant is engaged in. There are nearly 30 different work and long-term visas available for ex-pats. The website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan lists the kind of visas as follows: 

• Professor (Examples: university professor, assistant professor, assistant, etc.)
• Artist (Examples: composers, songwriters, artists, sculptors, craftspeople, photographers, etc.)
• Religious activities (Examples: religious people such as monks, bishops, missionaries, etc.)
• Journalist (Examples: newspaper journalists, magazine journalists, editors, news cameramen, announcers, etc.) 
• Business manager (Examples: company presidents, directors, etc.) 
• Legal/Accounting services (Examples: attorneys, judicial scriveners, public accountants, tax accountants, etc., certified in Japan) 
• Medical services (Examples: physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, etc., certified in Japan)

• Entertainers (Examples: musicians, actors, singers, dancers, sportspeople, models, etc.) 
• Skilled labor (Examples: chefs specializing in the food of a foreign country, animal trainers, pilots , sports trainers, sommeliers, etc.) 
• Specified skilled worker (i.e., work-ready foreign nationals who possess certain expertise and skills in specific industrial fields) 
• Technical intern training (Examples: Technical intern) 

Aside from the work visa categories in the list above, Japan has also introduced the specified skills visa ( tokutei ginou ) for foreign workers in specific labor sectors. The specified skills visa is further split into types: 

a. Specified Skills Visa 1-SSV1 – valid for one year and renewable for up to five years. Workers who have this visa cannot bring their families with them. Skilled workers in the following fields are eligible for this visa: 

• Agriculture 
• Materials processing 
• Nursing care 
• Shipbuilding 
• Restaurants 
• Airport ground handling and aircraft maintenance 
• Food and beverage 
• Industrial machinery 
• Electronics and electric machinery 
• Building cleaning 
• Construction 
• Vehicle maintenance 

b. Specified Skills Visa 2-SSV2 – renewable indefinitely, and workers with this visa may bring their family to Japan. Workers on Visa 1-SSV1 can apply for Visa 2-SSV2 once they have achieved higher levels of specialization in their field. 

The last category would be the highly skilled professional visa 3 . However, this is only available for advanced specialized or technical professions. Thus, they are rarely, if at all, found through POEA-accredited agencies.

4. Philippine government requirements

Aside from your host country and employers’ requirements, the POEA/DMW has the following requirements to properly prepare you for working overseas. 

• PEOS Certificate – the PEOS is an 8-module online seminar designed to educate you about overseas job application procedures, documentary requirements for working abroad, and protecting yourself from illegal recruitment scams. It is free, and you can register through their official website .  
• Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) – all OFWs must have an OEC when departing for or returning to work overseas. Also known as exit clearance/pass, the OEC is a document that certifies that you are legally registered under the POEA. You can use it as a perk to get travel tax and airport terminal fee exemptions.

How Much Will It Cost To Go Through a POEA-Accredited Agency To Get a Job in Japan?

There are no placement fees for workers deployed to Japan except for the following cases 4 : 

• Entertainers (musicians, theater actors, or performance artists in broadcasting programs, movies, vaudeville, etc.) 
• Models (models in fashion shows or other events, commercial models, art models) 
• Scientists (those involved in research, planning, management, and instruction of technical matters for business activities) 
• Management Executives 
• Skilled Workers (pass the technical skill test provided by Article 44, paragraph 1 of the Human Resources Development Promotion Act {Act No. 64 of 1969} for the special grade or the first grade or any corresponding skill, and provides businesses utilizing such skill for production or other business activities) 

Placement fees may only be collected from these occupations when they have earned at least 7 million yen or more in the first year since employment. Fees may be equivalent to 10.8% of their initial 6-month earnings after employment but cannot exceed one (1) month’s salary as per the Revised POEA Rules and Regulations Governing the Recruitment and Employment of Land-based Overseas Filipino Workers of 2016 5 . 

2. Documentation Fees

Of the documents that you need when looking for a job abroad, the following are the ones with fees attached to them: 

• Passport – ₱950 for Regular (12 business days) and ₱1200 for Expedite (6 business days).
• NBI / Barangay / Police Clearance – NBI Clearance Fee ₱115 + ₱15 DST & ₱25 System Fee (Online). The barangay and police clearance fees depend on your location. 
• PSA Authenticated Birth Certificate – ₱330 through online delivery .
• Medical Exam – cost depends on the clinic.
• PhilHealth Contribution – initial contribution of ₱2,400; additional contributions depend on the salary indicated on the employment contract.
• Pag-IBIG Membership – minimum of ₱100.

The placement fee is often waived, save for some exceptions. In those cases, the placement fee may only be collected when you have earned at least 7 million yen or more in the first year since employment. 
• There is insufficient information about the job and the requirements . Avoid applying for a job that lacks details if the agency and employer are unwilling to give you enough information. This is especially true for getting a job in a different country. 
• There is little to no information about the employer on the Internet . Most legitimate employers will likely have an official website or social media pages where you can find more information on them.  

2. Do your research on your potential employer

Learn more about the company’s culture and values, what they do, how they conduct business, and how they treat their employees. All of these are important so you can better gauge whether you will be a good fit for the job.

MANILA -- The trilateral agreement between Japan, the Philippines and the United States is one of the building blocks of peace and stability that is good for the region, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said on Thursday.

“We have the prospective trilateral agreement with the United States. Coming up on 12th of this month. We promise that I will be going to Washington to have a [meeting] with the American President,” President Marcos said in welcoming to the Palace newly-appointed Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya.

“So, these are building blocks that I think are good for the region, for our countries of course, but for the region. Let’s just do the work to continue to keep the peace that is to make the most important part all of that we do,” the President stated.

He further stressed that when it comes to foreign policy and geopolitics, the most important thing is that “we must find a way to keep peace,” but also underscored the necessity to respond to the actual situation on the ground.

“As I say this, keep the South China Sea an area as part of the world where there is freedom of navigation and trade. That’s all we wish for and so we are happy that once we try to do that we have you as part of it,” he said.

The President also noted that Japan’s assistance to the Philippines in equipment and also in training is very important, especially if complemented by support from other allies such as Australia, United States, Japan, and South Korea.

For his part, Kazuya noted that the strong, historical, traditional ties of the Philippines and Japan have strengthened further. “ [We’re] even prouder for the strength of our two nations and there are lot of things that we have to do whether in the security field or in the economic field,” Kazuya said as he presented his credentials to President Marcos.

“And our people-to-people exchanges between the two countries and when in the security field, we are working hard for the conclusion of the Reciprocal Access Agreement between the two nations,” he pointed out.

The Philippines and Japan celebrated 67 years of normalized relations on July 23, 2023, and 12 years of Strengthened Strategic Partnership since 2011. Japan remains one of the Philippines’ most dependable partners through various channels, including Official Development Assistance (ODA), maritime security, and trade and investments.

In February 2023, President Marcos traveled to Japan for an Official Visit and had a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on February 9 and an audience with H.M. The Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.

In December last year, President Marcos visited Tokyo anew to participate in the 50th ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida earlier traveled to Manila in November 2023 for an official return visit.

The two nations are working to strengthen their trilateral engagements with the US, which include defense, economic, and technology, among others. (PND)

7.4 magnitude quake hits Taiwan, strongest in 25 years

Rescuers are working to free dozens trapped after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Taiwan — causing landslides and collapsed structures.

At least nine people have died , more than 900 others are injured and over 100 buildings have been damaged.

The quake is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Here's what else we know:

• The quake:  The earthquake  hit  at 7:58 a.m. local time, 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the city of Hualien at a depth of 34.8 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
• Aftershocks : The quake was followed by 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors have been felt across the island, including in Taipei. Tremors as high as magnitude 7 are  expected  in the following days.
• Hualien County:  The region where the quake struck, Hualien County, has a population of about 300,000, around 100,000 of whom live in the main city of Hualien. But many in the region live in remote coastal or mountain communities that  can be hard to reach , so it might take time to understand the extent of Wednesday's quake.
• Trapped miners: Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien.
• Power cuts : More than 91,000 households were without electricity, according to Taiwan's Central Emergency Command Center.
• Medical facilities: Hospitals across Taiwan’s capital , Taipei City, are operating normally despite being damaged by Wednesday’s earthquake, according to the Municipal Government.
• US monitoring: The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday. 

71 miners trapped in 2 mines in Taiwan after earthquake, national fire agency says

Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien after a powerful earthquake struck the island. 

In the Heping mine, there are 64 people trapped, and seven more are trapped in the Zhonghe mine, the fire agency said in a news conference on Wednesday.

Taiwanese semiconductor facilities will resume production overnight following earthquake

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the chipmaking giant, said on Wednesday that its facilities which were impacted by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake are expected to resume production overnight. 

TSMC reported that their overall tool recovery is at more than 70% within 10 hours of the earthquake striking the island. Safety systems are also operating normally, TSMC added.

The company noted that a small number of tools were damaged but that there was no damage to its extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) tools. Work at construction sites will resume after further inspections are complete, TSMC said.

Earlier, a TSMC spokesperson told CNN they had evacuated some manufacturing plants. All personnel are now safe, TSMC said in an update.

Biden administration monitoring Taiwan earthquake, White House says

The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday. 

"We are monitoring reports of the earthquake impacting Taiwan and continue to monitor its potential impact on Japan. The United States stands ready to provide any necessary assistance. All those affected are in our prayers," a statement from National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

7 major earthquakes have hit Taiwan over the last 50 years

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that killed at least nine people and injured hundreds Wednesday, is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Over the last 50 years, the island has experienced a total of seven major earthquakes, the last being a 7.1 magnitude quake in 2006 in Pingtung County in southern Taiwan.

The island sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire , which makes it prone to earthquakes.

29 aftershocks above 4.0 magnitude have occurred near epicenter since earthquake, US Geological Survey says

There have been 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Of these aftershocks:

• One was above 6.0
• 13 have been at or above 5.0
• 14 have been above 4.0.

Forecast during recovery efforts: Tonight's forecast in Hualien City, near the epicenter, calls for increasing cloud coverage. Thursday is looking at mostly cloudy skies with afternoon showers and rain Thursday night and Friday during the day.

Rainfall totals should be relatively light for Taiwan, with models calling for under 25 mm (less than 1 inch) by Friday evening local time.

Closer defense ties expected after first U.S.- Japan-Philippines summit, Manila's envoy says

Defense and economic cooperation between the United States, Japan and the Philippines is expected to increase following their first-ever trilateral leaders’ summit next week in Washington, Manila's envoy to Tokyo said in an interview.

The statement comes amid media reports that the three countries plan to launch joint naval patrols in the South China Sea later this year — a move that would mark Tokyo’s first participation in such exercises, and anger Beijing.

Chinese state-run media has already criticized the plans, warning the move would “only serve to incite greater crisis and conflicts in the western Pacific.”

Both Washington and Tokyo are looking to reinforce defense and economic relations with Manila, which has become crucial to allied plans to deter Beijing.

Maritime disputes between China and the Philippines have rapidly intensified in recent months, with Marcos taking a more assertive stance and vowing not to lose “an inch" of territory.

From the repeated use of water cannons and collisions near contested reefs, dangerous and aggressive incidents have surged, particularly with Chinese vessels harassing ships aiming to resupply a Philippine garrison atop a warship grounded on submerged reef also claimed by Beijing.

Despite the mounting tensions, Garcia-Albano made it clear that, in defending its sovereignty and promoting its national interest, the Philippines “gives primacy to diplomacy and dialogue.”

“We believe in resolving disputes through peaceful means, in accordance with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),” she said.

Simultaneously, the country is committed to strengthening its maritime capabilities to ensure national security, uphold it maritime rights, and protect its sovereignty, the ambassador added.

“This dual approach of enhancing our maritime defense while actively pursuing diplomatic solutions underscores our dedication to peace, cooperation, and the rule of law in the West Philippine Sea and beyond.”

The shared concerns and escalating tensions have brought Washington, Tokyo and Manila closer, prompting a swift expansion of security and economic relations between the latter two, both U.S. allies.

Tokyo has repeatedly expressed concerns about Chinese military activities in the region, including what it sees as Beijing’s “attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force.”

Last year, Kishida became the first Japanese leader to visit the Philippines since 2017, pledging to help improve Manila’s maritime law enforcement capabilities through port infrastructure development and the provision of additional coast guard patrol vessels.

The Philippines also became the first beneficiary of Japan’s Official Security Assistance, a military aid program that provides defense equipment for free to like-minded nations.

“OSA has allowed the Philippines to acquire coastal radar systems to ensure that we have 24/7 continuous monitoring of our waters and airspace,” said Garcia-Albano, noting that related deals have sent a “very strong political signal that both our countries are committed to the rule of law, which is aligned with Japan’s vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Meanwhile, a bilateral visiting-forces agreement expected to be signed in the coming months will facilitate joint exercises with the Self-Defense Forces.

Manila will also be hosting the Philippines-Japan Maritime Dialogue later this year. Garcia-Albano said the Marcos administration plans to review progress made since March 2023 “so as to have a substantive discussion” with Tokyo in order to “sustain the positive momentum.”

Coast guard collaboration is also expected to grow, with the ambassador saying that Manila looks forward to the “expansion and continued acquisition of platforms and equipment from Japan to improve the Philippines’ own capabilities.”

Tokyo is looking to install satellite communication systems on Philippine patrol vessels and develop a Philippine Coast Guard base at Subic Bay that could host the agency’s two 97-meter, Japan-made patrol vessels.

Garcia-Albano said that Japan’s assistance, be it to the coast guard, the military or in nontraditional sectors such as cyber and economic security, are “positive and contribute to our efforts to secure and maintain peace in our waters.”

This, along with multilateral engagements in areas such as nonproliferation, space security and upholding the primacy of the UNCLOS, “demonstrates our commitment to regional and global peace and security,” she added.

But arguably the greatest factor emboldening Manila’s tougher stance on China has been Washington’s assurances that allies’ mutual defense treaty applies to “armed attacks on either nation's armed forces or public vessels anywhere in the South China Sea.”

Marcos agreed last year to provide U.S. forces access to four more military sites in the Philippines — in addition to a previously agreed five — providing Washington with a strategic footing on the southeastern edge of the South China Sea, near Taiwan.

Despite congratulating Taiwan’s President-elect Lai Ching-te on his January election win, Marcos has said he does not endorse Taiwanese independence and reiterated his country’s commitment to its One China policy — a stance confirmed by Garcia-Albano.

At the same time, the ambassador clarified that this “does not preclude” sustaining and enhancing mutually beneficial economic and societal relations through active cooperation and increased exchanges.

Considering Taiwan’s proximity, the presence of Filipinos there and the economic heft of the parties, Manila has legitimate interests in cross-Strait issues, she added, urging concerned parties to “exercise maximum restraint, and to resolve issues through diplomacy and dialogue, and not through force.”
