Kind reviews from our friends

There are other ways to get into Thorsmork – but if you want to avoid long hikes, waiting for a bus or the risks of driving your own vehicle across some decent-sized rivers, super jeep is the only option. Logi was wonderful – a total professional and great company on an all-day tour. He was easygoing, extremely knowledgeable and loves the country and what he does. He made sure we saw the places we wanted to see in Thorsmork (along with many we did not know about) while always remaining concerned with our safety and comfort. We hiked to a glacier face, into a cave, Stakkholtsgjá canyon, and a waterfall over the course of the tour. If I return to Iceland, I would definitely book another tour with Logi and Into The Wild.

We (my husband and two boys–15 and 8) booked a day trip to Thorsmork with Logi. We met him in the parking lot of Selandjfoss and just hopped into his super jeep and let him take us away. We made several stops each time Logi said OK let\’s take a little hike…he explained what we where seeing, he never rushed us through any of the stops. The scenery was magnificent. Just when we thought we where heading back to the parking lot Logi pulled over once again, we all hopped out but, this time he handed us helmets! We proceeded to walk behind a wall of rocks and was faced with a waterfall, but that\’s not all…there was another hidden waterfall that you had to cross the brook and scale the side of the rocks to get to the …

What an amazing, unforgettable experience! We had 3 nights in Reykjavik and were hoping to see the Northern Lights, there are soooo many tours and trips available over there and it was difficult deciding whether to go on a bus tour or a jeep….we eventually decided on jeep as there were 5 of us and we preferred a more personal tour. There are a few jeep tour operators so I phoned them all, not only were Into The Wild the cheapest but they were also very friendly and went out of their way to send information and were extremely helpful. After phoning back at 5…just to make sure the forecast was right to see the lights…Logi picked us up at 9pm to start the tour. We were all made to feel very welcome and Logi chatted …

The Askja & Holuhraun Lava Field Super Jeep Tour

A visit to the Askja Caldera in the Icelandic highlands is a once in a lifetime experience. The landscape of the highlands is unique and probably unlike anything you have seen before. During the tour, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you have been shot into space and landed on another planet! This tour offers you the chance to visit this amazing area with a professional local guide. You will not only explore the Askja Caldera but you will also see stunning mountains, forge rivers and visit other hard-to-access regions of the highlands.

This tour departs early morning from the Lake Mývatn area.

Once you meet with your guide and group, you will start the drive into the Icelandic highlands. As you drive up to the Askja caldera, you will stop at some beautiful and unique places. One of the highlights is Herðubreiðalindir. This oasis in the barren highlands is not only stunningly beautiful but also rich with history. Here, outlaws would seek refuge in olden times, the most famous being Fjalla-Eyvindur. As you visit this oasis and enjoy views of the Queen of Icelandic mountains, Herðubreið, your guide will tell you more about Fjalla-Eyvindur and how he survived here.

Other stops along the route include Drekagil or Dragons gully. The gully is named for the dragon many can make out in its geological formation. After a picnic at Drekagil, you’ll continue up to the Askja caldera. This 50 km2 caldera is located in the Dyngjufjöll mountains, which emerged in eruptions under an Ice Age glacier cap. The caldera formed mainly during the ice age in a significant ash eruption. This eruption caused the magma chamber’s roof at the central volcano’s heart to subside.

The caldera contains several volcanoes, including the Víti crater. Víti is an explosive volcanic crater with accumulated water, creating a milky blue crater lake. You will then hike about 2.5 km from the caldera parking lot up to the caldera itself. The hike is classified as easy to moderate, depending on the snow levels when you visit. If you stay in early summer, you should expect more snow. Once up at the caldera, you can enjoy the fantastic views over the caldera and Lake Askja. One of the most stunning sights here is the Víti crater. If conditions allow, you might be able to bathe in the milky blue water of this volcanic crater! You should always bring a swimsuit and a towel, but your guide will decide if it is safe given the conditions at each time.

After visiting the Askja caldera, you will return to your vehicle and continue your journey. Before returning to Lake Mývatn, you will see the Holuhraun lava field.  This lava field is Iceland’s youngest, and you will explore this rough, moon-like landscape before driving back to Lake Mývatn.

This tour can also be arranged as a private tour. Contact us at [email protected] for pricing and availability for private tours.

What's not included

Two people in winter gear next to the large all-terrain vehicle, with a striking glacier in the background, showcasing a winding trail leading into the distance under a bright sky.

Pickup in Reykjavík or meet at Gljúfrabúi waterfall

We will start our day at  your selected pick up location in Reykjavík , but it’s also possible to be picked up on the way to Seljalandsfoss (Hveragerdi, Selfoss, Hella, and Hvolsvöllur). We will drive towards southeast through the mountain pass of Hellisheiði Plateau towards the south coast of Iceland and make a short stop for a coffee at Hvolsvöllur.  Please note, that this is the only stop where you can buy lunch and snacks for the day.

If you don’t need pickup service, you can meet us and join the tour at Seljalandsfoss.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Now we’ll turn off the ring road in the direction of Thorsmork and make a stop at  Seljalandsfoss waterfall . The  breathtakingly beautiful, 60 meters tall   Seljalandsfoss  is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland and it’s on the list of Iceland’s 10 most photographed natural wonders.

You can walk behind the waterfall  on a walking trail for a unique viewing angle. Bringing either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along is highly recommended if you want to walk behind the waterfall as you will get soaking wet from the pouring water. On a bright and sunny day, there is a chance to see a rainbow in front of the waterfall.

Gígjökull glacier

Next, we will continue our way in the direction of Thorsmork and head all the way up to  Gígjökull , one of  the outlet glaciers of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano . You can walk entirely to the icefall edge, touch and walk on the glacier.

You can get an idea of the forces that were at play during  the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull  that not only destroyed the agricultural region around it but stopped air traffic in Europe.

Powerful glacial bursts emerged from Gigjokull during the eruption, sending meltwater gushing down and flooding the surrounding landscape. You’ll witness that the impact of the eruption is still very visible in the area.

A Game of Thrones filming location

Next stop will explore  a breathtaking canyon , which is just out of this world and  one of the filming locations of Game of Thrones .  Stakkholtsgjá canyon  is a beautiful natural wonder, a 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) long canyon surrounded by 100 meters (330 ft ) high moss-covered cliffs. Walking to the end of the canyon is one of the most rewarding short hikes in Iceland. This dramatic, towering canyon was the filming location of a scene in Game of Thrones season 7 when Jon Snow leads the team to ambush a pack of wights.

The palagonite cliffs have many interesting and dramatic forms, caves, narrow and deep ravines. Inside the canyon, there is a small creek, and you will find a dreamlike,  beautiful waterfall in a high cave  at the end of the track. It’s not just a stunning place, but a place you may think this is one of those places where elves and trolls live. This is one reason why Icelanders have loved and visited this canyon for many years.

Thorsmork, the Valley of Thor

After our walk in the canyon, we will follow our way to deep into  Thorsmork, the scenic valley of Thor . This will be the best playground for your super jeep:  crossing rivers and handling the rough terrain  will be a  great adventure .  Thorsmork  is a  natural reserve  in a remote area of the southern  Icelandic Highlands , nestled between the  Myrdalsjokull, Eyjafjallajokull and Tindfjallajokull glaciers , and one of the most favorite location for Icelanders and many travelers. The valley is a green oasis  between the rivers Krossá, Þröngá and Markarfljót with wide vegetation of moss, birchwood, and other small shrubs. This lush green area contrasts dramatically against the  black sand desert  of the Markarfljót riverbed and the imposing glaciers around it. Locals swear that Thorsmork is one of the most beautiful destinations in Iceland. This is the reason that many Icelanders come here to hike, ride or just relax among the birch trees with their family.

Once we are deep into the Thorsmork valley, you have the opportunity to enjoy the amazing landscape, have lunch and take nice short hikes around the area, and really drink in the beautiful  unspoiled nature of Iceland .

Whatever the season, in Thorsmork, you always have a lot of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in a magnificent landscape that looks like scenes from the Lord of the Rings.  Surrounded by ice caps , which shelter the valley below, the weather in Thorsmork is very often much better than in the rest of south Iceland.

A hidden gem

On our way back we will stop at one of our favorite places.  Nauthúsagil   ravine  is a true  hidden gem of Iceland’s South Coas t. Nauthúsagil’s famed characteristics are the rowan trees growing on the ridges, sometimes horizontally, creating a roof of leaves. We will walk through the narrow ravine and explore its unique, beautiful world. At the end of the ravine, there is an  enchanting waterfall  waiting for us. The combination of the waterfall and the light from above is unrealistically beautiful.

After an exciting day of exploring the great wonders of the Thorsmork area, we will make our way back out stopping at Hvolsvöllur for a coffee. We will return to Reykjavík around 6 PM approximately.

Thorsmork Valley Super Jeep & Hiking Tour

Thorsmork Valley Super Jeep & Hiking Tour

Description

Join an exciting Super Jeep tour to Þórsmörk Nature Reserve, a place so beautiful that its name means 'the Valley of Thor'. This family-friendly tour runs throughout the year and should not be missed by anyone looking to bask in the natural beauty of Iceland.

Þórsmörk is an incredibly scenic valley in the heart of south Iceland, surrounded by majestic mountain ridges and filled with contrasting forests and lava fields. It is also nestled amongst three awe-inspiring glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull.

To reach this secluded valley, your guide will drive you down rough Highland F-roads and cross several un-bridged and gushing glacial rivers, making getting to Þórsmörk as much of an adventure as being there.

Thankfully, the 4x4 super jeeps are fully equipped for such challenges.

On your way to Þórsmörk, you stop by the foot of Gígjökull outlet glacier to observe the effects of the terrible 2010 eruption from Eyjafjallajökull. This eruption stopped the air traffic around the whole of Europe and threatened surrounding farms with floods and ash.

Your guides are locals with a burning passion for the Icelandic nature and absolutely love their job. They will make sure you are enjoying your day from pick-up to drop-off and provide you with fun stories and interesting facts from the area.

Þórsmörk has a unique and special vibe that you will note as soon as you arrive; the surroundings look much like they have been pulled straight from the pages of Tolkien.

As well as enjoying the amazing views from the car window, you make stops to take photos and hike shorter trails. The longest hike on this tour is about 30 minutes, but note that each tour is catered to our guests needs and if you don´t wish to hike then an alternative option is walk a gorgeous trail from Langidalur valley over to Húsadalur valley. You follow a trail deep down into the magical valley.

You then meet your guide at the Volcano Huts, located in Húsadalur. From this location, which boasts beautiful views, you will enjoy a lovely meal, included in the price.

Make your Iceland adventure an unforgettable experience! Check availability by choosing a date.
