Fred: John, je bent inmiddels 7 jaar Travel Counsellor. Begonnen bij onze Britse tak van de onderneming en nu al 2,5 jaar als Nederlandse Travel Counsellor aan de slag. Hoe ben je bij ons terechtgekomen?

John: Ik heb gewoond in Engeland, Amerika, Zwitserland, Duitsland en nu dan in Nederland. Ik ben al heel mijn leven gek op reizen en heb het geluk gehad meer dan 80 landen te mogen bezoeken. In 2013 heb ik besloten om iets te gaan doen met al deze kennis en ervaring, al snel kwam ik toen bij de Travel Academy terecht. Inmiddels ben ik Travel Counsellor in de UK en Nederland en heb ik de Gold status bereikt, ongelofelijk! (Gold word je wanneer je bij de beste 10% van alle Travel Counsellors wereldwijd behoort, gebaseerd op verkoopresultaten.)

Je hebt een inspirerend verhaal en bent het perfecte voorbeeld van waarom wij de Travel Academy vorig jaar ook in Nederland zijn gestart. De eerste Nederlandse Academy Travel Counsellors zijn inmiddels volop bezig en zijn allemaal echte ondernemers, met een groot netwerk en een enorme passie voor reizen. Ik ben nauw betrokken bij de Academy en geef zelf ook les. Het geeft mij zoveel energie om de deelnemers in 32 weken te zien groeien. Wat is jouw achtergrond?

Door de jaren heen heb ik van alles gedaan. Van technische en commerciële functies tot Human Resources. Uiteindelijk ben ik terecht gekomen bij een aantal multinationals waar ik gewerkt heb als HR Director en verantwoordelijk was voor vestigingen over heel de wereld. Na 20 jaar raakte ik gedesillusioneerd door de politiek binnen deze grote multinationals, had ik niet langer meer plezier in wat ik deed en voelde ik dat ik als persoon binnen deze organisaties niet meer kon groeien. Ik besloot toen om iets te gaan doen waar ik gelukkig van werd, iets waar mijn passie lag. De reisbranche was voor mij een voor de hand liggende keuze, maar zonder enige ervaring in de branche leek het voor mij een onmogelijke stap. Toen las ik over de Travel Counsellors Travel Academy.

En toen heb jij je meteen opgegeven?

Precies! Travel Counsellors is de grootste reisonderneming wereldwijd met van uit huis werkende reisadviseurs. Dat trok mij over de streep, ik wilde natuurlijk wel in zee gaan met een gezond bedrijf. Travel Counsellors is actief in de UK, Ierland, Dubai, Zuid-Afrika, Australië, België en Nederland. Dat geeft een veilig gevoel. De eerste twee weken van de Academy bestaan uit een introductietraining op het hoofdkantoor, mijn gevoel van veiligheid en professionaliteit werd toen direct bevestigd. Ik heb zoveel geleerd over de reisbranche, de processen, het Travel Counsellors boekingssysteem Phenix en sales. Na twee weken introductie mocht ik, onder begeleiding van het hoofdkantoor, direct beginnen met boeken. Gedurende de resterende 30 weken heb ik regelmatig trainingen gevolgd op het hoofdkantoor en via het online trainingsplatform Coach. Tot op de dag van vandaag krijg ik nog steeds geweldige steun van de collega’s op het hoofdkantoor, ze zijn er altijd om me te helpen. De Travel Academy heeft mij een professionele, succesvolle reisadviseur gemaakt.

Succesvol, dat ben je zeker! Van geen ervaring in de reisbranche tot het starten van je eigen bedrijf als Travel Counsellor en toen binnen 2 jaar Gold, hoe doe je dat?

Het was hard werken om deze status te bereiken na de Travel Academy, maar ik ben het bewijs dat het mogelijk is. Vooral mijn netwerk die ik tijdens mijn hele carrière heb opgebouwd, is daarbij van belang geweest. Daarnaast heb ik mij vanaf het begin voorgenomen uit te gaan van mijn eigen kracht en mezelf als Travel Counsellor te presenteren op verschillende netwerkevents. Als laatste ben ik mij bewust van het klantprofiel wat het best bij mij past; mensen die geïnteresseerd zijn in maatwerk en zakenklanten, wat niet betekent dat ik geen pakketreizen boek. Uiteindelijk is iedere klant en iedere boeking van belang.

Maatwerk bieden, dat kunnen wij wel. Met ons uitgebreide dynamic packaging systeem Phenix, kun je gemakkelijk reizen samenstellen. We doen zaken met meer dan 450.000 accommodaties en 70.000 betrouwbare leveranciers. Van hotels en vluchten tot autohuur en attracties, alles is te boeken in ons boekingssysteem. Wat is jouw ervaring met Phenix?

Travel Counsellors investeert veel in technologie, het is de ruggengraat van het bedrijf. De IT-afdeling is de grootste afdeling binnen de organisatie, dat zegt al genoeg denk ik. De tools en systemen, waaronder Phenix, zijn altijd in ontwikkeling. Het geeft een prettig gevoel om te weten dat de organisatie nooit stilstaat. Als Travel Counsellors worden wij aangemoedigd om feedback te geven om zo de systemen nog verder uit te bouwen. Alles om ons (werk)leven makkelijker te maken! We hebben ook een geweldige app waar klanten alle reisinformatie en -documenten direct beschikbaar hebben, waar ze ook zijn ter wereld.

Niet alleen Phenix, maar inderdaad ook onze app, Contact Centre en Coach trainingssysteem, zijn mooie tools om je verder te brengen. Ben je nu eigenlijk waar je hoopte te zijn toen je begon?

Over het algemeen kijk ik met tevredenheid naar mijn onderneming, zeker de kwaliteit van het leven dat ik ervoor terug gekregen vind ik waardevol. Het is mooi te zien waar ik nu ben, na keihard werken. Voor het komende jaar ligt mijn focus op het verkrijgen van meer MKB-zakenklanten. Uit deze tak valt veel winst te behalen, maar de manier van werken is net weer anders dan bij leisure klanten. Zakenklanten zijn een mooie aanvulling op mijn leisure business.

De mix van het bedienen van leisure- en zakenklanten werkt inderdaad goed. Er zijn ook steeds meer Travel Counsellors die voornamelijk zakenreisklanten bedienen. Niet gek als je bedenkt dat de vraag om ontzorgd te worden en de behoefte aan persoonlijk contact steeds groter worden onder zakenreizigers. Kun je iets vertellen over de tools die wij bieden om zakenklanten te bedienen?

In veel gevallen kunnen wij onze zakelijke klanten credit terms bieden, met een eenvoudige maandelijkse facturering. Uit onze systemen kunnen wij allerlei rapporten halen, zodat klanten eenvoudig hun uitgaven en reisgedrag kunnen analyseren. Het is mogelijk om zakenklanten van zowel Nederlandse als Engelstalige documentatie te voorzien, dat is ideaal. En zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan.

Ook op het gebied van zakenreizen zijn wij altijd in ontwikkeling. Wat zou je willen zeggen tegen lezers die interesse hebben in onze Travel Academy of die wellicht overwegen te starten als Corporate Travel Counsellor?

Ik geloof niet dat er een andere reisorganisatie is die hetzelfde trainingsniveau kan bieden en dezelfde ondersteuning, voor iemand zonder ervaring in de branche, als Travel Counsellors. Bovendien zijn de vrienden die ik heb gemaakt binnen Travel Counsellors (over heel de wereld) echt speciaal voor mij. We zijn een echte community met geweldige mensen die elkaar steunen en veel plezier met elkaar beleven. Het vergt durf om de stap te maken om vanuit loondienst je eigen onderneming op te starten. Die keuze is niet voor iedereen de juiste, maar heb je een passie voor reizen, geloof je in jezelf, ben je doelgericht, wil je persoonlijke service kunnen bieden en heb je een goed netwerk? Dan denk ik dat er geen betere keus is dan de stap te wagen. Ik geniet elke dag van mijn werk, zou nooit meer terug willen naar mijn oude baan, ben mijn eigen baas, kan mijn dagen flexibel indelen en zie mijn bedrijf alleen maar groeien. Wat wil je nog meer?!

A trip to Moscow

I'm going to organize a trip this summer. I want to plan everything. I’ll fly from London to Moscow, and I also want to visit St. Petersburg. Could you, please, advise me what places I should visit? I’ll stay in Moscow for about 10 days before going to St. Petersburg. Thank you!

I don't really see the point of shunning a country because you don't agree with its leader and/or its government. Would you go to Italy? China? Tourist dollars are more likely to get into the hands of the people rather than any corrupt bureaucracy and meeting friendly tourists might just change the locals opinions of foreigners and even give them some information they don't get from local news media.

Hopefully , I won't be starting a war here , but I must say I agree with Chani's comments . Having taken three year visas in 2015 , we have been to Moscow and St; Petersburg ( once to Moscow , and twice to St Petersburg ) . The History , Art , Music ( I am a classically trained musician ) and Culture , fascinate us . And while leaders of such countries can point to foreign visitor numbers as a sign of support ? I also believe that personal safety for certain travellers, especially obvious minorities, cannot be guaranteed, as fervent nationalism increases, and tolerance levels evaporate. Just as I may decide against a purchase at the supermarket because of a company’s behaviour, ethics will always be a consideration.

Well, I'd argue supermarket ethics does not readily translate to travel ethics - the latter is far more complex. Personally, I see the whole "vote with my hard-earned travel dollar" approach as overly simplistic, but if it's your position - I totally respect it.

What I don't understand is members volunteering ethical guidance in response to what seems an innocuous request for travel-related information.

I appreciate Rick Steves' point of view in his "Travel As A Political Act". That said, Putin's Russia is not a place I would support. But, to each his or her own....

From a practical point of view, travel between the two countries can be difficult. I understand the Russians who traveled in the US this past winter had to go to the US Embassy in the country of Georgia to get visas because the Russians expelled American embassy personnel. Travel Advisory January 10, 2018 Russia – Level 3: Reconsider travel Reconsider travel to Russia due to terrorism and harassment. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory U.S. citizens are often victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion by law-enforcement and other officials. U.S. consular assistance to detained individuals is often unreasonably delayed by Russian officials. Russia also enforces special restrictions on dual U.S.-Russian nationals. Due to the Russian government-imposed reduction on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, the U.S. government has reduced ability to provide services to U.S. citizens.

We have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg over the past few years. As in the US, most of the people we encountered helpful and not particularly political. In Moscow, we stayed at The Garden Ring Hotel which was a close walk to the metro. The hotel was very comfortable and quiet for being in the city. We loved the art museums and the Georgian restaurants. In St. Petersburg, we stayed at both The 3Mosta hotel near the Hermitage and the Art Hotel Demetra.. In St. Petersburg, we especially liked the Hermitage and Russian museum. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet and having a good map is a must.

Either read a good travel book or book a guide who can personally take you to the best places that interest you and tell about the sights you're seeing. We used Dan Petrov on 2 different trips to Moscow and found him to be wonderfully friendly and witty not to mention super knowledgeable.

Latest advice, Australian Governmemt, 1 April 2018. “Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”

We very much enjoyed our group trip to Moscow and St Petersburg last year. excellent guides and accommodations. While Steven who has replied here has excellent advice, ( and we took advantage of it), we felt an organized tour really facilitated our enjoyment of the country. You may want to consider a combination of an organized tour and than adding independent days . Some of the Australians on the tour had arrived a couple of days earlier than the tour stated and then some stayed later. If we were to go again (which I would), that"s how I would do it. And I must say , it was enlightening to have conversations with the Russian tour guides and the non Americans about the current world situation. Not that we went into any great depth, but I think we all went away with a little more understanding. Top places: allow lots of time in St Petersburg at the Hermitage- take a separate day for the Impressionist building. In Moscow, the Russian Art Museum was amazing.

Solid advice from Australian government quoted above, especially the keeping up to date part.

I checked the current version (Sep 18) of that advisory - and it hasn't been updated much. In fact, some sections don't seem to have changed since 2005 - their recommendations for importing/exporting currency and financial instruments, for example, are at least five years behind.

I do like reading governmental travel advisories for entertainment purposes - for instance, up until very recently the US one sternly advised potential travelers that Moscow was largely a cash-based economy (couldn't be further from the truth) and warned about intrinsic dangers of gypsy cabs (which had all but disappeared by 2015).
