Jonas brothers concert review: 66 songs, 1 glorious night.

When the Jonas Brothers say their new tour includes five albums in one night, theyâre not kidding.
Over the course of almost exactly three hours on Saturday, Aug. 12, at Yankee Stadium , Joe, Nick, and Kevin played at least a chorus, but often more, of 66 (!) songs.
The setlist included every single track from albums âJonas Brothers,â âA Little Bit Longer,â âLines, Vines, and Trying Times,â âHappiness Begins,â and their latest âThe Album,â plus recent non-album singles and, of course, âYear 3000.âÂ
They even made room for Nick to play âJealousâ off his self-titled solo album, and âCake by the Ocean,â by DNCE, a Joe-fronted band.Â
‘The Tour’ is for the OGs, as Nick said during the show â the people who have been there since the very beginning, including this reporter â and for anyone who has found their way to Jonas Brothers fandom since. Thatâs the beauty of a show like ‘The Tour:’ no matter what your favorite Jonas Brothers track is, youâre going to hear it at some point during the night.Â
(For me, personally, these were âTonightâ and âSorry,â both from âA Little Bit Longerâ and âFly With Me.â)
Highlights of the night included the ballad âWhen You Look Me in the Eyes,â fan-favorite âLovebug,â âWallsâ featuring Jon Bellion, and the beginning of the âHappiness Beginsâ album set, which kicked off with âComebackâ and âRollercoaster,â two songs that nod to the bandâs 2013 breakup and 2019 reunion. Another fun moment came when Joe asked the crowd to start doing the wave right as Nick launched into a speech before a heartfelt ballad (the crowd obliged, of course).
The Tour doesnât come with much spectacle â thereâs the obligatory pyro during âBurninâ Up,â and fireworks that were likely exclusive to Yankee Stadium concerts â because the music really is the main focus. All three brothers spent significant time at the very end of the catwalk interacting with each other, fans in the front rows, and the members of their large, talented backing band.Â
Songs from âThe Albumâ were spread out across the night, while the other four records were played in full, chronologically. There was even an intermission between âA Little Bit Longerâ and âLines, Vines, and Trying Timesâ â at the opening show, this break lasted about 20 minutes, but it also started pouring right as the intermission began.
That time may vary as ‘The Tour’ moves to mostly indoor arenas going forward.Â
An intermission at a concert may seem unnecessary, but this is the kind of show that never takes its foot off the gas. By the time it actually happened, it was nice to have that break to get more water (because staying hydrated when youâre screaming and dancing is very important), use the restroom, and even just sit down for a few minutes without feeling like you were missing out on the fun.
For us, the biggest surprise of the night came at the end of the âA Little Bit Longerâ album set when they performed their first platinum single, âBurninâ Up.â Although fans at the Saturday night show didnât get to hear Nickâs iconic âred dressâ flourish in the second verse, we got to see Big Rob, the brothersâ former bodyguard, come out on stage to rap his verse on the track. It got one of the loudest reactions of the night; the crowd went wild for the special guest and of course, as an OG fan myself, I was right there with them.
No matter how much time has passed, catching a new Jonas Brothers show always feels like coming home, and Iâm already planning on catching ‘The Tourâs’ closing night show at Brooklynâs Barclays Center in December.

Who is opening up for the Jonas Brothers on The Tour?
By rebecca mills | sep 1, 2023.
Everyone knows the Jonas Brothers and the band seems to be everywhere right now. Itâs only right as the band embarked on The Tour.
With the release of The Album , a lot of us anticipated a tour and the band even started off with 2 nights back-to-back at Yankee Stadium. That was huge and a great way to start the tour off with a bang.
Since the band is set to perform a lot of songs, some were curious about if JB had someone opening for them or not. I mean 5 albums worth of songs is a lot of songs and frankly, a lot of hours of singing.
Whether youâre headed to a concert soon or just want to know the details, weâve got the scoop on if the Jonas Brothers have an opening act for the tour.
Who is opening for the Jonas Brothers on The Tour? (2023)
For The Tour, the Jonas Brothers are keeping it in the family. They decided to have Lawrence open for them. Similar to the brothers, the band is made up of two siblings: Clyde and Gracie Lawrence along with their band. Aside from the siblings, the band actually features 6 musicians. Lawrence has also worked with Jon Bellion in the past and even on some songs featured on The Album .
While Lawrence might seem like an unlikely choice, the connection to Jon Bellion and them being siblings had to play a major role. Regardless of why they chose Lawrence, at least we all know who is opening for this massively exciting tour. Plus this is a question I see floating around a lot especially in some of the Jonas Facebook groups Iâm apart of.
If youâre headed to see the Jonas Brothers on The Tour, you might want to check out one of Lawrenceâs songs which Iâm adding below. If youâve already been to the see The Tour, then Iâd love to know what you thought of Lawrence and how they did opening up for the Jo Bros.
The Jonas Brothers and Lawrence are currently on tour together. You can buy tickets here .Â

The Jonas Brothers have truly come full circle in 2023. dark. Next
Youâre gonna wanna remember this.
Itâs not just the weather outside â things are burninâ up this summer, thanks to the Jonas Brothers . Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas are revisiting five of their six studio albums on their own version of an eras tour, which is simply titled The Tour. The band of brothers kicked off The Tour in NYC with two sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium, which included some surprise guests, light-up wristbands, and a career-spanning set list . As theyâve moved on to the next shows on the schedule, some things have changed along the way. To better prepare you for your night with the JoBros, hereâs everything you need to know about The Tour.
I actually attended both nights of the Jonas Brothersâ The Tour at Yankee Stadium, so I went into my concert experience totally blind. This meant I ended up stuck in the rain night one, because I totally forgot that an outside concert is susceptible to the changing weather. I also wasnât aware at the time that itâs such a long show â they really arenât lying when they say itâs five albums in one night. Tracking how the tour has been going since my shows on TikTok, I can confidently say Iâve put together a Jonas Brothersâ The Tour survival guide for other fans to follow. From everything like things to bring in your bag to the best Jonas Brothersâ Tour outfits, hereâs what to know so you arenât a sucker for Nick, Joe, and Kevin.
There are a lot of similarities between the Jonas Brothersâ The Tour and Taylor Swiftâs The Eras Tour . Along with light-up bracelets that are being handed out at most shows once you enter ( Boston Night Two was an exception), fans are also exchanging friendship bracelets at the concert. However, JoBros fans are taking this trend to the next level by making friendship rings , inspired by the boysâ purity rings they used to wear in their Disney Channel days. So, get a kit before your show, and make some bracelets and rings with different lyrics and song titles to exchange.
Just like the Eras Tour and BeyoncĂŠâs Renaissance Tour , this is a chance for you to really dress up â and some fans are going all out. Several people were wearing outfits inspired by when the Jonas Brothers competed on the Disney Channel Games , which is a fun group costume. However, you can also keep it simple by wearing an OOTD inspired by what the JoBros used to wear in the early aughts. Think vests, infinity scarves, and lots of swooping bangs. The more camp (rock), the better.
First, be sure to check your venueâs bag policy. Once you know whether there are size restrictions or if you need a clear bag, you can start packing. Along with a portable charger to keep you going through the entire set, youâll also want to be prepared for any weather. I was caught in the rain and really wished I had brought a poncho or umbrella. But it was also super hot at night in NYC, so a fan was a must-have as well. I recommend bringing a little fan to keep you cool, and if possible, an empty water bottle to fill up once you get inside.
The Jonas Brothers have teased that there will be surprise guests on The Tour , but thatâs not always the case. While both nights in NYC had guests like Big Rob for âBurninâ Upâ and Kirk Franklin and Jon Bellion for their song âWalls,â night two also had Jimmy Fallon come out after the intermission. Boston also had inconsistent surprise guests: Night one had TikTok sensation DJ Crazy Times and Ms. Biljana Electronica singing âPlanet of the Bass,â while night two didnât have anyone. So, donât get your hopes up if you no one shows up for your concert. At least you have Nick, Joe, and Kevin, and you might get to go home just a tad bit earlier.
Joe is notoriously bad at remembering lyrics to some of the older Jonas Brothers songs, and honestly, itâs relatable. Some of these songs from their self-titled album, Jonas Brothers, you havenât heard since it was released in 2007. Give yourself a break if you canât scream-sing every line from âHollywoodâ or âAustralia.â Itâs been 16 years. Of course, you could give yourself a crash course ahead of time by studying their set list . Just know that many of the songs are shortened into medleys, so you wonât have to know every single word.
While Swift mixed up her eras, the Jonas Brothers are doing things chronologically. That means the first half of the show covers Jonas Brothers and A Little Bit Longer, and the second half is Lines, Vines, Trying Times with Happiness Begins. They do sprinkle in tracks from their latest album, The Album, during both halves, and give a moment to their solo eras with Nick singing âJealousâ and Joe singing DNCEâs âCake by the Ocean.â So, you could say itâs a five albums, one night show with some extras thrown in.
However, there are no songs from Camp Rock on the set list, and just like Swift ignored her debut album during the Eras Tour, the Jonas Brothersâ Itâs About Time is left out as well. It truly is a bummer for us OG fans, who just want to hear âPlease Be Mineâ and âMandyâ live one more time.
I wish I had known ahead of time that all the Jonas Brothers merch being sold at the venue is also available online. It would have saved me so much time not having to wait in line by just buying it ahead of time. For now, nothing is show-exclusive, so donât waste your time and use it to go to the bathroom and get some snacks. (Have I mentioned already itâs a long show?)
For both nights, I was in the stands rather than on the floor. Iâve seen the Jonas Brothers plenty of times, so just being there is enough for me. I donât need to spend $800 on VIP Jonas Brothers tickets . However, if you want the chance to look them in the eyes or even talk to them, youâll want to splurge on those VIP packages â more specifically, the Ultimate Wings Lounge VIP Package. A more central seat will also give you a better view of the entire stage, along with the fireworks that go off behind them.
There is an opening act for The Tour, Lawrence , who do a great job at pumping up the crowd beforehand, but donât stress yourself out trying to get to the venue too early. Since merch isnât a must like it was at the Eras Tour , you can take your time. Even the Jonas Brothers were late getting on stage when I went in New York. They said theyâd be on at 8 p.m. , but both nights it was close to 8:30 p.m. Just give yourself enough time to get some snacks, go to the bathroom, and find your seat before they take the stage.
If you do find yourself running late to the show, thereâs an intermission. The last song before the break is âBurninâ Up,â which closes out their A Little Bit Longer section. To avoid long lines, just make sure youâre ready to head to the restroom as soon as the song ends. This is also a great time to grab some snacks or refill your water bottle for part two.
Jonas Brothers Promise ‘Five Albums Every Night’ on North American Tour
By Jon Blistein
Jon Blistein
The Jonas Brothers will dig into their own “eras” bag with a new North American tour that will find them performing “five albums every night.” A few weeks before its kick-off, the band has extended their biggest tour yet with the addition of 26 new shows in North America and 27 new shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
“The Tour,” as it’s being called, appears to build off the band’s recent Broadway residency , during which they played one of their albums in its entirety each night, along with a selection of hits. The shows covered 2007’s self-titled up through their new LP, The Album , released May 12 (no luck for fans of 2006’s It’s About Time ).
Anyway, “The Tour” will kick off with the band’s two previously-announced how’s at Yankee Stadium in New York City on Aug. 12 and 13. The run was originally scheduled to wrapping on Oct. 14 at the Kaseya Center in Miami. Now, it will continue with a show at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on Oct. 18 and extend through June 20, when it will conclude with a show in Northern Ireland. The new dates include shows in Brooklyn, Portland, Newark, Nashville, Vancouver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and more.

In the wake of Happiness Begins , the band garnered a bevy of awards, including three trophies in the categories of âTop Duo/Group,â âTop Radio Songs Artist,â and âTop Radio Songâ for âSuckerâ at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, a 2019 MTV VMA for âBest Pop Video,â âBest Duo/Groupâ at the 2020 iHeart Music Awards, and two Teen Choice Awards, including the prestigious âDecade Award.â They also picked up American Music Awards nominations, a coveted Grammy nomination, and more. Jonas Brothers teamed up with Marshmello for âLeave Before You Love Me,â claiming a Top 10 spot at Top 40 radio for six weeks and tallying millions of streams and views.

Jonas Brothers add more than 50 dates to The Tour: 'We want MORE!'
The Jonas Brothers â and their fans â want more. More tour, that is.
The brother trio â Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas â announced a new batch of dates Thursday for their upcoming The Tour, which kicks off in New York with two sold-out nights at Yankee Stadium Aug. 12 and 13, supporting their sixth release, "The Album." The band is adding more than 50 new shows to the North American leg of the tour and across Europe, Australia and New Zealand, totaling more than 90 shows across 20 countries in their largest tour to date.
"You heard us⌠we want MORE! We added additional dates for THE TOUR in Australia, Europe and the US," the Jonas Brothers shared on Instagram alongside a cheeky video of the three of them excited about wanting "more."
Another sibling group, pop-soul act Lawrence led by Clyde and Gracie Lawrence, will open all the North American shows.
Ahead of the tour, the Jonas Brothers unpeeled the layers behind their albums at midtown Manhattan's Marquis Theater for their five-night concert residency on Broadway .

Fans might also get an emotional moment between the brothers on tour with their ballad "Little Bird," which talks about the importance of a father/daughter relationship and is among their new favorites to perform live.
"It's one of those tunes where you're fighting back tears," Joe Jonas told USA TODAY in a May interview . "It's an emotional tune and we all kind of go, 'OK, here we go' when we see it on the setlist."
"I think it's like a thing where (before) one of us was out on a boat or something and the other was home with kids. There was a clear difference in what our realities are on an everyday basis," Nick Jonas said in the same interview. Now, "there's a better understanding and awareness of where we're all at, and that's totally reflected in the music."

Everything We Know About the Jonas Brothers 2023 Tour
And maybe a new album, too... đ
The Jonas Brothers surprised us all in 2019 when they announced their reunion and new song after a six year hiatus. The Jo Bros have been on two tours since the band got back together. They went on the Happiness Begins Tour from August 2019 to February 2020, and the Remember This Tour from August to December 2021. And now they're back again, besties!
"Later this year there will be a tour," Nick said.
When Kelly asked about the band's new music, he said, "Yeah. So, the album is done. We are very excited about it. And we're kind of in that planning moment. Planning the campaign, the album, the single, like, all the things."
Kelly had the sweetest response, saying, "The thing I love about your band as well is that I also love yâall separately. I loved the projects youâve done, the solo stuff. Everything awesome. That doesnât usually happen [âŚ] Yâall as a whole are still solid, itâs amazing."

When Are They Performing Next?
On Friday, February 24, the Jo Bros announced that they'll be performing on Broadway for five nights.
They made the announcement with an Insta post, captioning it "Your boys are back in town đ˝ We're coming to Broadway and playing the Marquis Theatre March 14-18!! Each night will be focused on a different album and we'll be playing all the hits. Believe us when we say you won't want to miss these shows... What Do We Know About the New Album?
While we don't know too many specific details about the upcoming album just yet, like the title or release date, the brothers just spilled some tea that may be able to hold us over for a little while.
The Jo Bros have teamed up with Jon Bellion for this album, and what we know so far is that the album is going to have a major '70s feel, with inspo from different '70s artists, like the Bee Gees. âThey were a huge influence in our lives, growing up and listening to them with our father,â Kevin said about the Bee Gees in an interview with Variety
"The key to Jonâs initial pitch was bringing in influences from the â70s, but with a really modern edge to it,â Nick revealed. âWe wanted to find a way to tell stories that are universal but also ultra-personal."
Now, let's get into the boys' fav songs off this album. "I'm torn between 'Little Bird,' which is a song about parenthood that will affect people in different ways, and 'Waffle House.' It was a last-minute addition," Nick said "At first, it was a bit of a head scratcher, but the more I listened to it, the more I loved it. I think it really encapsulates a moment in time for us. Musically it taps into some of my favorites: Doobie Brothers and Bee Gees, and others from that era. It's a really, really, fun song. We can't wait to play it live."
Joe's fav is called "Wings." "It might be the shortest song on the album, but I like it because it feels like a trailer to the rest of the body of work. Also 'Montana Sky.' There's a lot more acoustic guitar and real organic instruments that tap into a bunch of different influences, but we're aware of the fact that we're not a country act. Jon flipped it on its head â he's got a modern edge to everything he does, even if it has really classic elements."
Kevin chose a song called "Vacation eyes." "'Vacation Eyes' is based on how my relationship started with my wife. We met on vacation â and continuing that love story every single day is how I want to live my life. It makes me want to be on the beach! Itâs just such a fun song about enjoying life." So cute!!

The Jonas Brothers Are Facing Major Backlash for Rescheduling Tour Dates in Favor of a "Project"
Jonas Brothers fans are calling "S.O.S." over the band's decision to reschedule European tour dates for reasons that seem extremely vague.
Kevin Jonas, Joe Jonas and Nick Jonas took to social media to announce the move, writing, "Europe!! We’re shifting our upcoming shows to later this year. We appreciate your love and support so much. We know this is a bit inconvenient but we can’t wait to share more about what’s coming
"All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new date and info is at http://Jonasbrothers.com. More details will be sent out on email. "Latin America - We can’t wait to see you next week!!"
In the accompanying video, Nick said, "We have shifted the European dates to later this year, but that is only because we have some exciting projects that we're very excited to share with you at a later point. European fans, we love you, we can't wait to see you, it's been long overdue, and we're so excited to play these shows later this year in the fall."
The rescheduled shows were originally slated for just a month from now.
Europe!! We’re shifting our upcoming shows to later this year. We appreciate your love and support so much. We know this is a bit inconvenient but we can’t wait to share more about what’s coming 😏All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new date and info is at… pic.twitter.com/5V8Z7FYljp April 10, 2024
Fans were extremely unhappy with the news—especially considering the explanation seemed flimsy—with many pointing out that they had already booked travel and accommodation for the shows.
"So plane tickets and hotels are free ? I'm really pissed off," commented one person.

"Cancelling due to sickness/illness or family commitments I would totally understand," remarked another. "But re-scheduling for a 'project' that you are prioritising over a tour that thousands of people have paid out for, on tickets/transport/hotels DURING A COST OF LIVING CRISIS?????? REALLY????"
"Read the room please how can you all look so happy when rescheduling literally a month before the tour was meant to start?" asked someone else. "The short notice is gonna be hell for us to get refund for our flights and accommodations + getting time off of work. This ain’t nice"
A post shared by Jonas Brothers A photo posted by jonasbrothers on
On the band's website , a note reads, "Due to scheduling conflicts, the Jonas Brothers shows have been rescheduled. All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new date, and additional tickets are on sale now. More information will be sent directly to ticket holders via email."
The three brothers have already played shows in the Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand and Australia, and are headed to Brazil on April 16.
While fans are rightly frustrated that the European dates have been rescheduled for such fuzzy reasons, the Jonases have previously addressed the importance of protecting their mental health when touring.
Joe recently told the Associated Press , "We’ve been burnt out before and then you’re like, 'I still got 20 more shows on this tour.' So we all have our own perspective ways of going about that, and we just make sure that that’s prioritized and also that we think the three of us are communicating as best as we can."

Jonas Brothers spark fan fury by rescheduling tour on short notice
On Wednesday, the Jonas Brothers posted a joint Instagram video sharing major news about their Five Albums. One Night. The World Tour. with fans.
"We have shifted the European dates to later this year," Nick Jonas began, adding, "but that is only because we have some exciting projects that we're very excited to share with you at a later point."
With only five weeks left until the European leg was slated to begin, fans were aggravated by the sudden timing change, especially since many had already booked hotels and flights.
Fans argued that the band should have planned these "exciting projects" around their existing tour commitments or made the announcement far sooner.
The rescheduled tour dates will now occur in September and October, with the originally planned final show in Poland becoming the new closer, according to their updated schedule .
Angered fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment with the band, with some criticizing their lack of consideration.
Jonas Brothers fans express outrage over rescheduled shows
"At least do the bare minimum and approve the refund option for the many of us who can no longer make it," one fan commented under the video, while another said, "Anyone have 'Jonas brothers cancelling themselves' on their 2024 bingo card?"
Another wrote, "I had flights booked from Australia to Dublin (17,000km) and idk if I'll be able to change themâŚ"
Some rumors on social media suggest Nick and Joe are heading to Broadway, which is why the rescheduling had to take place.
However, nothing has been confirmed about the "projects" by the band just yet.
"Jonas Brothers postponing their EU/UK tour at such short notice in lieu of 'new exciting projects' is just so tone deaf to all the people who have already spent money on accommodation and travel," one viewer wrote on X.
The Jo Bros are set to continue their Latin American leg of the tour as planned before the new four-month hiatus.

Moscow hopes to become first 5G city by 2020
One of the 5G network will be a speed of 100 megabits per second for residents of large cities.
The Moscow mayor's office is in talks with a consortium of mobile operators over the possibility of developing 5G networks, the Kommersant daily reported on April 7. The government is determined to make the project an attractive investment for the operators and hopes the Russian capital will have 5G networks in 2020.
Moscow’s telecom market is divided between four major players: Russian companies Megfon, VimpelCom, and MTS, plus European Tele2 – which entered the fray in 2015. A query from RBTH about a 5G consortium received an optimistic response from Megafon and Tele2, but VimpelCom and MTS decided not to answer.
"The consortium may lay the foundation for the joint development of this technology by all the operators," said Konstantin Prokshin, head of strategic communications at Tele2.
The support of the authorities is important for telecom operators because such issues as equipment deployment and power supply can often be solved only with the government’s help, explained Yulia Dorokhina, head of the press service at Megafon.
2018 World Cup and rivalry with London
City of London Corp., which runs London's financial center at the municipal level, has announced its plans to switch to the 5G standard as soon as it becomes available, writes The Financial Times. The company has signed a multimillion dollar wireless Internet upgrade contract with Cornerstone, which is owned by the Vodafone and O2 telecom operators.
Global capitals will be competing with each other over which of them will become the first to switch to 5G, said Konstantin Prokshin. The pace at which new technologies are introduced suggests that Moscow can indeed become one of the leaders in the development of 5G, he added. "Moscow's mobile market is one of the most developed in the world, with a low average cost of services and high quality," Prokshin pointed out.
During the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Megafon plans to set up 5G test zones, Yulia Dorokhina said. "One of the main advantages offered by the new network is its huge capacity. The client receives high-quality signal in places of mass gathering of people – stadiums, railway stations, traffic jams," she added.

Exact 5G specifications are still being developed, but one of them – as identified by the Next Generation Mobile Networks alliance – will be a speed of 100 megabits per second for residents of large cities.
"So far, some disparate research experiments have been conducted. What exactly the 'fifth generation' will provide is not quite clear," said Vladimir Korovkin, head of Innovations and Digital Technologies at the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo.
He added that the focus of 5G developers is not to increase the bandwidth of the channel, but to provide a guaranteed high-speed signal and density of coverage. "Both these features are important for mass use of M2M (machine to machine) networks," Korovkin explained.
One of the crucial questions is who will be producing the technical equipment and how the link to international networks will work. For the first time, Chinese companies, in particular Huawei, are taking an active part in creating a new standard, Korovkin pointed out. For example, Megafon has successfully tested mobile data transmission at 1 Gbit/s using Huawei equipment and at 5 Gbit/s during network equipment tests with the Finnish company Nokia, Dorokhina said.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground
Jun 06 2018.
Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.
Subterranean commuting might not be anyoneâs idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscowâs finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.
The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the cityâs psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. Itâs also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules â official and not â hereâs what you need to know to get started.
A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour
A Brief Introduction
Moscowâs Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the cityâs beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalinâs secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscowâs layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.
The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a stationâs aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.
The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan âBuilding a Palace for the Peopleâ. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Unionâs past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.
It may be a museum, but itâs no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)
In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, itâs also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But thereâs a price to modernity: itâs phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly womenââ escalator grandmas â in news accountsâwho have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.
For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscowâs above-ground growth, as Russiaâs capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the worldâs worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations â a 40 percent increase â the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metroâs history.
Facts: 14 lines Opening hours: 5 a.m-1 a.m. Rush hour(s): 8-10 a.m, 4-8 p.m. Single ride: 55â˝ (about 85 cents) Wi-Fi network-wide
Buying Tickets
- Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
- You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
- There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
- Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218â˝/ US$4), three days (415â˝/US$7) or seven days (830â˝/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
- If youâre going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, itâs worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36â˝, not 55â˝. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and theyâre valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
- You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
- You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
Rules, spoken and unspoken
No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.
Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)
Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.
Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).
An Easy Tour
This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). Itâs an easy tour, taking in mostâthough not allâof the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.
Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring, Â Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.
1. Mayakovskaya. Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York Worldâs Fair in 1939. Itâs all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.
Take the 3/Green line one station to:
2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.
Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:
3. Novoslobodskaya. Â This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldnât find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Rigaâs Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.
Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:
4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russiaâs illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war. Â The stationâs eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.
One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue line, and go one stop to:
5. Baumanskaya.  Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.
Stay on that train direction one more east to:
6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metroâs tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Unionâs war-time struggles at home. The ceilingâs recurring rows of circular lamps give the stationâs main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.
Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:
7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchevâ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraineâs contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.
Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.
8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the worldâs longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russiaâs great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the â Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generalsâ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely thereâs some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.
Keep going one more stop west to:
9. Slavyansky Bulvar. Â One of the Metroâs youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stationsâwhich tend to have covered central tunnels on the platformsâit has an âopen-airâ feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). Itâs an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M ĂŠ tro, and thatâs precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M ĂŠ tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimardâs Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.
Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:
10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesnât have a war theme. It may also be one of the systemâs most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.
Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:
11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statuesâ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscowâs commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldierâs gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a babyâs foot, and a womanâs knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )
Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
