About Phu Quoc

Phú Quốc, is the largest island in Vietnam and nearby islands, along with distant Thổ Chu Islands, is part of Kiên Giang Province as Phú Quốc District.

Phu Quoc is famous for its two traditional products: fish sauce and black pepper. The rich fishing grounds offshore provides the anchovy catch from which the prized sauce is made. Pepper cultivation is located inland in the center of the island. More recently a pearl farm was established. Tourism plays an important role in the economy with the beaches being the main attraction. Phu Quoc was served by Phu Quoc Airport with air links to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)'s Tan Son Nhat Airport and Rach Gia's Rach Gia Airport. Phu Quoc Airport was closed and replaced by the new Phu Quoc International Airport from December 2, 2012. Phu Quoc is also linked with Rach Gia and Hà Tiên by fast ferry hydrofoils.

Phu Quoc National Park in the northeast of Phu Quoc Island belongs to the communes of Bai Thom, Cua Duong, and Ham Ninh, Phu Quoc District, Kien Giang province, Vietnam.

From Duong Dong town in Phu Quoc Island, travel along with Duong Dong – Ham Ninh route, you will come to Ham Ninh Village . From there, going back to the north about 10km, you will come to Phu Quoc National Park.

Phu Quoc National Park is one of the rare National Parks in Vietnam that still retains the original old forest intact. The park also converges many beauties of the various landscape of forests, sea, waterfalls and mountains.

Phu Quoc National Park was established in 2001. This area includes Bac Dao Nature Reserve, Ham Rong Mountain, Ganh Dau and Cua Can.

With a total area of ​​over 31,422ha, Phu Quoc National Park is divided into 3 functional subdivisions, namely: strict protection zone 8,786 ha, ecological restoration subdivision 22,603 ​​ha, and administrative subdivision – service – scientific research 33 ha.

Phu Quoc National Park is a rare place that still preserves precious primeval vegetation and tropical jungle. With a diverse and unique ecosystem, this park is the highlight of Phu Quoc tourism.

Besides, Phu Quoc national park has about 60km of coastline stretching with lovely views. The marine part of the National Park owns beautiful coral reefs with rare species of flora and fauna, such as sea turtles, sea cows, grouper, butterflyfish.

Traveling to this park, along the trekking paths, you will encounter rare herbs. Also, you will have a fascinating experience to see various species in the sea.

Phu Quoc National Park is a natural forest with various types of lush vegetation cover: primary forest, sparse forest, forest on rocky mountains, dry forest, coastal ordinary forest, and flooded salty forest, Trung Nham forest, Myrtle forest, Melaleuca forest including Melaleuca trees and Melaleuca bush.

Due to diverse topographical features and favorable climate, creating conditions for the formation of rich biodiversity resources, Phu Quoc National Park owns 1,164 species of higher plants, belonging to 137 families and 531 genera, including many precious timber trees, 155 species of medicinal plants, and a lot of wild orchids.

Especially, 12 species of endemic plants, which are found only in Phu Quoc and not found elsewhere. There are also 9 endangered species of forest plants and animals listed in the Vietnam Red Book that need to be prioritized for protection.

Regarding animals, there are 210 species belonging to 125 genera, 78 orders, including:

• 30 species of mammals
• 119 species of birds
• 47 species of reptiles
• 14 species of amphibians and hundreds of species of insects
• 152 species of marine fish
• 132 species of mollusks
• 32 species of echinoderms and coral reefs and vast seagrass beds.

In which, there are many rare and precious animals listed in the Vietnam Red Book (2007), IUCN Red Book (2018).

Besides wild species and genetic resources, the Phu Quoc ecosystem also has plant and animal resources that not only have great economic value but also have the meaning of preserving indigenous genetic resources, such as Phu Quoc ridgeback , Sea cow (Dugon).

This is an extremely valuable natural and man-made resource not only for the Phu Quoc island but also for Vietnam and the whole ASEAN region.

Although Phu Quoc National Park is protected very strictly, you can still visit the allowed areas.

There are many ways to explore Phu Quoc National Park in which tourists often choose the following two main ways:

The first way, many Vietnamese tourists use motorbikes to explore the areas in the North of the island, especially in the Ganh Dau region, where owns almost the forests of the National Park.

The second way is to trekking through the tree-lined trails, learn about the ecosystem there. This is usually accompanied by local guides or forest rangers. We recommend you go with the second way because you will have time to immerse yourself in beautiful nature.

Trekking Phu Quoc National Park

Because the road is difficult to travel in Phu Quoc National Park, and still wild, with the desire to preserve the integrity of nature, trekking is always the best choice.

Trekking in Phu Quoc National Park gives you great feelings if you are a nature and photography lover. Conquering Mount Heaven Phu Quoc

Conquering Mount Heaven Phu Quoc on the range of Ham Ninh will be a very attractive challenge when participating in Phu Quoc tours.

You will walk through tropical forests, valleys, and streams to reach Heaven Mountain with an altitude of 565m, which is considered the roof of the island.

From the top of the mountain, you can zoom out into the distance, observing all the beauty of the island. It is the village, the sea, and the primeval forest of Phu Quoc National Park.

In the distance is An Thoi archipelago, and Hai Tac island. The feeling of standing in the air at the top of Heaven Mount will be an unforgettable experience for you when traveling to Phu Quoc.

Please note that when exploring Heaven mountain, you should wear suitable clothes for trekking: a pair of sports shoes, and lightweight comfortable clothes, bring little food and drinking water. And, you should go in groups with a local guide.

Swim in the stream of the national park

Besides the mountains, forests, and the coast, Phu Quoc National Park also has beautiful streams, typically Tranh Stream, Da Ngon waterfall, and Da Ban stream.

As for Tranh stream and Da Ban stream, you should go in the rainy season because in the dry season, these streams are dry and there is no running water.

But don’t worry, Phu Quoc National Park also has a beautiful 7-storey Da Ngon stream like a fairyland flowing all year round, from day to night without tiring. This is also one of the most beautiful streams on pearl island.

Da Ngon stream has wonderful beauty like a fairyland. This is a great place to bathe in streams and enjoy nature with your family.

Pro tip: when swimming or walking at wet stones, you need to go slowly and mind your steps carefully to avoid falling down.

Notes when conquering Phu Quoc National Park

Like exploring other national parks in Vietnam, you need to read the general regulations of the park before entering any forest.

If you trek, you need to equip yourself with comfortable clothes, especially sport shoes. Besides, it is necessary to prepare a small amount of food, snacks, and drinking water.

If you travel with a motorbike, you need to fill up with gas and wear protective clothing. You should hire a local to ride you around.

Bring some medicines and medical supplies, just in case, typically repelling insect spray, and anti-mosquito spray.

Conquer National Park of Phu Quoc is suitable for group travel of friends, avoid going alone.

During the journey, always prioritize caution and safety. It is better to follow the instruction of the local guide.

8:50 arrive the hiking point. Before we start, the local guide will instruct safety: how you walk up and walk down the hill, what you can and can’t touch. There are a few different paths in the jungle, so we will give you 2 options to choose:

Option 1: 5 km trail, it takes us 2 hours to get to the waterfall

Option 2: 9 km trail, it takes us approx 3 hours to get to the waterfall

Lunch time will be around 12:30 to 13:00

14:30: started walking back to the starting point

Phu Quoc is heaven for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for a challenging unmarked trail up the islands highest mountain or scenic hikes through the National Park you will find what you are looking for on Phu Quoc Island. All hiking adventures begin in the Phu Quoc National Park, which covers 50% of the island. Below are a few trails that we have identified which you can explore on your own or with a tour guide. 

The Best Hikes In Phu Quoc

Best Hike: Ganh Dau Trail |  Best Trek:  Ham Ninh Mountain Trek | National Park Hikes

Phu Quoc District consists of 28 islands however hiking and trekking activities are limited to only 2 of those islands, namely the main island of Phu Quoc and the ecotourism island known as Hon Thom Island or Pineapple Island.

Setting Expectations

As the authors of this guide are avid outdoor enthusiasts who have traveled the world, they wanted to make sure that readers of this guide receive truthful information about what to expect when it comes to hiking on Phu Quoc.  Phu Quoc is transforming into an island city of sorts and most of the lush areas are being replaced by resorts and mixed residential properties.  Hiking and trekking opportunities are extremely limited.  Some of the wild trails that we have discovered in the past have been transformed into organized, for-profit “trekking tours”.  With that being said, there is only 1 hiking trail, mountain trekking trail, 1 motor vehicle trail area, and several eco-tourism walks.  There are also several un-maintained trails that will take you inside the Phu Quoc National Park, however exploring these trails should be avoided until they are fully developed.  We have encountered gun wielding poachers, giant potholes covered by moss, as well as ticks and other biting insects while exploring these trails.

Phu Quoc National Park Hiking & Trekking

At the moment a trail is being created in order for tourists to summit Mount Chua, Phu Quoc's highest mountain at 603 meters. Mt. Chua is located right in the middle of the Phu Quoc National Park. At the moment this area is a restricted zone until the viewing platform on Mount Chua has been completed.

However visitors can summit Mount Ham Ninh (also known as “Mount Heaven”), which is part of a mountain range running along the eastern coast of the island.  At 400 meters, Mount Heaven is the 2nd highest mountain on Phu Quoc Island and trekking this mountain requires the assistance of a guided tour, but it is possible to hike on your own. This trek is perfect for the traveler looking to get off the beaten track and do a little mountain climbing at the same time. The local guide will show you up a secluded trail through dense virgin forest, leading to a bird's eye view of the eastern side of Phu Quoc. You will have to climb up a 10 meter high bamboo ladder in order to summit. The trek down the mountain is just as difficult as you will be taken down a different trail and depending on the guide, your trek may end up at a natural pool or a myrtle sim fruit garden.

Dangers & Annoyances

Hiking, trekking and any outdoor activity can be dangerous and has many potential hazards. It is up to each individual to know their limits, abilities and level of expertise before attempting any outdoor activity.  Never attempt any of the suggested trails alone, regardless of your health or physical ability.  Dangers include:

• insect bites/bee swarms leading to an allegric reaction.
• animal bites/attacks.
• Broken ankles due to rough terrains.

The following is an explanation of how we rate the trails found on Phu Quoc Island:

• Easy: These paths will typically have elevation changes less than 10 m. Hikers will experience good trail conditions. Structures along the path may include bridges, stepping stones, boardwalks, steps and retaining walls. The Easy paths are very popular with hikers and are usually found to have many more structures to preserve the original footpath.
• Moderate: These paths will have elevation changes of less than 30 m will occur and may occur on a more frequent basis. Hikers will experience structures such as bridges, stepping stones, boardwalks. Boardwalks may not cover all wet areas, steeper climbs may occur.
• Difficult: These paths will typically have elevation changes up to 100m. Hikers may experience more rugged trail conditions but will definitely enjoy a true wilderness experience. Some structures may be present over large streams, wet areas, etc.
• Strenuous: These paths will have major elevation changes over 150 m. These paths may have some structures and bridges. One of our Signature Paths – The Spout falls in this category.

Ganh dau Trail

TYPE: Forest LENGTH: 1.5 km TIME: 0.5 to 1.5 hr RATING: Easy

Phu Quoc's most popular trail. A short hike that takes you to old growth trees and jungle. The hike is relatively easy and the trail can get crowded at times.

Ham Ninh Mountain Trek

TYPE: Mountain Trek LENGTH: 6 km TIME: 1.0 – 3.0 hr RATING: Moderate

The only real trekking that can be done in Phu Quoc with a nice view of the sea at the summit.

Rach Tram Jeep Trails

Rạch Tràm, Bai Thom

TYPE: Forest – Offroading LENGTH: Varies TIME: 1.5 hr RATING: Easy

A remote trail located in the far north east corner of Phu Quoc Island, mainly used by 4×4 jeep tours, dirt bikes, and cyclists.

Da Ngon Waterfall Hike

TYPE: Forest LENGTH: 3.0 km TIME: 3.0 hr RATING: Moderate

This hike takes you around the islands largest lake and to the waters that are part of the Da Ngon stream.

Dien Tien Mountain Hike

Starfish Beach Hike

Rach Vem, Ganh Dau

TYPE: Beach LENGTH: Varies TIME: 1.5 hr RATING: Easy

Walk along Rach Vem Beach and reach this unique area where you will see hundreds of starfish.

Mount Chua Trek

TYPE: Mountain Trek LENGTH: 2.0 km TIME: 3.0 hr RATING: Moderate

This trek takes you the summit of Mount Chua, Phu Quoc's highest point at 603 m.

Mui Ong Doi Hike

Hon Thom Island Hike

TYPE: Urban LENGTH: Varies TIME: 1.5 hr RATING: Easy

Suoi Tranh Waterfall

Suoi Da Ban Stream

Phu Quoc National Park Hiking

The many trails that take you deep inside the islands national park.

The Phu Quoc National Park Trail is a narrow single lane trail located in Cua Duong commune, in the heart of the Phu Quoc National Park. The trek through this forest is relatively easy and it is best to hike this trail early in the morning. There are no large hills to climb over and the terrain is mostly flat however you must be careful of your footing as this trail is a wild trail and it is not maintained.

The Phu Quoc National Park Trail is a great trail to view plants and wildlife. Like with all things natural, please only take pictures and do not disturb the wildlife. Some of the wildlife you may encounter here are pit vipers, macaques, hornbills, a variety of insects amphibians and reptiles. The plant life here is remarkable. You will find a variety of secondary forest trees, fungi, palms, etc.

How To Get To The Phu Quoc National Park Trail

The Phu Quoc National Park Trail is located in between Cua Duong & Bai Thom communes and can be accessed directly from the Duong Dong – Bai Thom Highway (DT973) on the Cua Duong side or from the TL48 highway on the Bai Thom side – very close to the Da Chong Port.  There is a road that intersects the aforementioned communes and will take you to the protected forest area.

*Unfortunately as of 2017, this trails is closed to the public.  Currently a few “ecotourism” projects are underway and the entrances are guarded.

Other Trails

There are numerous trails located just off the Duong Dong – Bai Thom hwy.  These trails are not maintained so please explore them at your own risk.
