Kiruna – an arctic city bathed in the Northern Lights

Kiruna – Sweden’s northernmost city – has a lot to offer. This is where to see the Northern Lights and experience the Midnight Sun. It also boasts Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain.

  • The municipality of Kiruna is larger than 50 of the countries in the world.
  • It’s home to the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine, opened in 1898 and still in use.
  • Kiruna is progressively being shifted eastwards, away from land affected by mining. Its new town centre was unveiled on 1 September 2022.

Nestling some 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, Kiruna is a gem of a city that forms part of Swedish Lapland – an enormous area covering about a quarter of Sweden. Kiruna also has cultural and historical significance as part of Sápmi – the traditional home of the indigenous Sámi people – that extends beyond the national border.

An outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination, Kiruna is surrounded by varied and vast terrain – from deep forests and expansive marshes to lakes, rivers and mountains – including Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain. These landscapes are ideal for activities such as hiking, fly fishing, skiing, snowshoe walking and dog sledding.

Kiruna is fascinating from an urban perspective. This historic mining community – first established in 1900 – is undergoing a transformation due to the impact that the mining has on the area. For the mining to be able to continue, the physical lifting and shifting of buildings – and the occasional demolishing and erecting of others – is well underway.

Kiruna’s city centre stood ready in its new position on 1 September 2022, and Kiruna City Hall – a completely new building known as “the crystal” – was the first landmark to appear. The rest of the move is due to be completed by 2035.

There’s plenty to discover in this compelling city of transformation and if a roadtrip in Kiruna is on the agenda, you won’t have to venture far before reaching gems such as the Icehotel, Kebnekaise and Abisko – all located within the municipality.

Icehotel, Jukkasjärvi

The Icehotel is situated 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. It is constructed entirely from ice and contains hotel rooms, a bar and art exhibitions. Quite often, guests who go outside will catch the natural phenomena of northern lights.

Kiruna and the Northern Lights

Kiruna is synonymous with the Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun and other natural phenomena, not least, the Polar Night. This four-week period in December and the first few days of January sees Kiruna – and other places north of the Arctic Circle – stranded in near constant darkness. The sun doesn’t rise above the horizon but it is never pitch black, thanks to the snow, the light from the moon and the “blue hour”. Despite the name, this is a short period of some 15 minutes of twilight each day , when the sun is just below the horizon and the sky takes on a deep blue appearance.

Seeing the Northern Lights meanwhile, is an unforgettable experience. You can catch this kaleidoscopic display in various places, perhaps as part of one of the many outdoor activities setting off from the city. The Aurora Sky Station in Abisko – an hour’s drive from central Kiruna – is known as one of the best places in the world to admire it. You’ll only be able to see it when it’s dark from September to March though.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Midnight Sun is the 24/7 sunlight you get here in summertime. Plan your trip between late May and mid-July if you don’t want to miss it. You can also combine the experience with skiing as late as Midsummer in the Riksgränsen ski resort.

An ultimate hotspot for outdoor nature activities

Take advantage of the long days by hiking along the famous King’s Trail (Kungsleden). The section extending from Abisko to Nikkaluokta takes you through the lake-studded Abisko National Park. Kebnekaise is one of the trail’s star attractions. Hikers should also consider the Three Country Cairn trail (Treriksröset), taking its name from Sweden's northernmost spot – the cairn that divides Sweden, Norway and Finland.

With thousands of lakes and numerous major rivers, Kiruna is a flyfishing paradise. The clear waters are inhabited by species such as Arctic Char, pike, whitefish, grayling and salmon. There is a range of guided fishing tours on offer – complete with fishing licence – lasting from a few hours to several days. Ice-fishing is another ideal Kiruna experience and there are activities aplenty to choose from.

As for other wintertime experiences, dog sledding is a definite highlight. Huskies are a joy to spend time with and there are various tours and activities to choose from. Set off on your own like a true musher or sit back and relax. You’ll find dog sledding information and activities here.

The Sami people have their own folk costume, the kolt. The traditionally blue costumes have at least 12 different styles and differ for men and women.

Kiruna's cultural identity – and some of the activities embracing it

The region around Kiruna known as Sápmi – the land of the Sámi people – stretches across the very north of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. Sweden’s indigenous people have inhabited the region for thousands of years. Reindeer herding is a major Sámi industry and don’t be surprised if you come across herds of these beautiful, placid animals when out in nature. If so, take care to keep your distance so as not to disturb them.

Authentic Sámi experiences are on offer courtesy of a number of hosts. Nutti Sámi Siida and Giron Reindeer, for instance, invite you to learn about reindeer herding via a range of experiences, which differ depending on season and incorporate additional aspects of Sámi culture.

Back in the city, guided tours will take you through Kiruna’s new urban landscape and continuous shifting. North Sweden Tourism , Kiruna Storytelling and Guide i Norr organise tours – all compelling and each with its own direction.

Don’t miss the opportunity to go underground to explore the LKAB mine – the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine. The tour and informative visitor centre sheds light on the mine's century-long history and current mining production – as well as its role in the city’s move and much more.

Kiruna on a plate – local specialities and where to find them

Kiruna’s culinary identity is influenced by Sámi food traditions. Local produce and ingredients harvested from nature form an important part of the diet. Reindeer meat comes in many forms, including sausages and smoked steak, and you’ll also come across elk meat. Fish from local waters appear on many restaurant menus and be sure to try Kalix Caviar. This was the first Swedish produce to receive Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the EU, joining the ranks of Champagne and Stilton Cheese.

Restaurants serving up the best of the region, with sustainability front and centre, include Spill Saluhall & Eatery . This restaurant/deli offers local specialities. In a similar vein, Mommas , housed in Scandic Kiruna hotel, has a menu based on regional flavours.

Stejk Street Food offers casual dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Add an extra pinch of local flavour to the experience by taking a seat in its cosy lavvu, the Sámi equivalent of a tepee.

As for drinks, keep an eye out for brews by Kiruna Bryggeri , available in most local restaurants and bars, allowing you to complete the local experience.

Kiruna Travel Guide

Kiruna is a destination that offers a memorable and unique experience for travelers seeking adventure, natural beauty, and cultural immersion. Whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights or exploring the pristine wilderness of Lapland, Kiruna has something special to offer all year round.

How to get there, where to stay, when you should go to Kiruna

Where is kiruna.

Kiruna is located in the northern part of Sweden, in the region of Norrbotten. It is situated within the Arctic Circle and is the northernmost town in Sweden.

Kiruna is known for its proximity to the Arctic wilderness, unique natural phenomena like the Northern Lights, and its role as a gateway to Lapland. It is also notable for its mining industry and the famous Icehotel, which attracts tourists from around the world.

Are the northern lights better in Abisko than in Kiruna?

The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon that can be observed in both Abisko and Kiruna. The northern lights look similar in Abisko and Kiruna due to their close proximity and similar latitudes.

Abisko is known for its clear skies and low light pollution, making it an excellent location for viewing the Northern Lights. It also has a unique microclimate that tends to have less cloud cover than other areas in the region, which can increase your chances of seeing the aurora.

Kiruna is another popular location for aurora viewing, and it has a range of accommodation options and activities for visitors. While it can be more crowded than Abisko, it also has a wider range of services and amenities available.

Ultimately, both Abisko and Kiruna offer excellent opportunities for viewing the Northern Lights, and which one is “better” depends on your personal preferences and priorities.

Our Kiruna Northern Lights Tour will take you to Abisko. After we pick you up from your hotel in Kiruna, we will drive to Abisko village, where we will have dinner and get ready for an adventure!

How to get to Kiruna?

The best way to get to Kiruna is to fly or take a train.

By Flight:  Direct flights into Kiruna from Stockholm run multiple times a day on several carriers. From Stockholm to Kiruna is about an hour and a half flight, and from the Kiruna airport you can easily catch a bus to the city centre.

By Train:  The night train from Stockholm to Kiruna is the most popular way to get to Kiruna. Leaving from Stockholm at 6 pm, the train arrives in Kiruna around 9:30 am the next morning. The overnight train offers sleeper cabins and plenty of amenities for the long trip.

How many days should I spend in Kiruna?

The number of days you should spend in Kiruna depends on your interests and what you want to do while you’re there. If you are primarily interested in seeing the Northern Lights, it’s a good idea to plan for at least three to four nights to increase your chances of catching a clear night with aurora activity. However, keep in mind that the aurora is a natural phenomenon and can’t be guaranteed, so it’s important to be flexible and patient.

We highly recommend that you stay in Kiruna a minimum of 4 nights to make sure that you will see the Aurora Borealis and your trip was worth it. Besides the Aurora, there are many activities you can do in Kiaruna, especially in winter: What to do in Kiruna.

When should I go to Kiruna?

If you want to experience the Northern Lights, you should visit Kiruna in the season from September to March. If you want to experience the snow activities that start in late October and see the Northern Lights, the period from the beginning of November to the end of March is perfect.

However, it is really impressive to experience the wonderful colors of nature with the northern lights in September and October (with less or no snow!).

The polar night period from the beginning of December to the middle of January offers you a completely different experience. During this period, the sun never rises above Kiruna, and the area becomes dark.

During the summer months, Kiruna experiences a natural phenomenon known as the Midnight Sun, where the sun doesn’t set for several weeks, creating a unique and surreal landscape.

Kiruna city Transformation

The transformation of Kiruna is a significant and unique urban development project driven by the impact of mining activities on the town. Kiruna is situated above one of the world’s largest iron ore deposits, and mining has been a core part of the local economy for over a century. However, the extraction of iron ore led to ground subsidence, threatening the sustainability and future of the town.

To address this issue, a substantial part of Kiruna has been moved to a new location, about three kilometers east of the old town center. Several historic and culturally significant buildings have been physically moved to the new town center, preserving the town’s heritage. This includes the Kiruna Church, which was meticulously relocated and reconstructed.

The relocation and transformation project has been executed in phases to minimize disruption to the community. Residents and businesses have been gradually moving to the new town center.

Where to stay in Kiruna?

Old Town Center

If you are looking for a chalet-style rooms, you can stay in  Camp Ripan , breakfast and SPA are amazing. Other good options are Arctic Eden or Hotel Bishops Arms .

If you are looking for a budget accommodations your options are Spis , STF Kiruna or Samegarden .

New Town Center

Scandic Hotel is the newest hotel in Kiruna, located in the New Town Center.

Where to eat in Kiruna?

Try local dishes such as reindeer meat, Arctic char, and cloudberries during your holiday in Kiruna. The cuisine is influenced by the Sámi culture and the unique ingredients available in the region.

Camp Ripan Restaurant,   Ice Hotel Restaurant or Scandic are great options for a fancy dinner. Ice Hotel is not located in Kiruna, it is located in Jukkasjarvi, 15 km away from Kiruna center.

If you are on a budget trip, feeling snaky or want to have fika here are a few suggestions:

In the new city center

  • Spill: great breakfast, brunch and dinner. The newest place in town
  • Aurora restaurang kiruna: located in Aurora Kultur & Kongress.

In the old city center

  • Stejk Street Food: Reindeer & moose meat mix, arctic cheese, steaks and condiments. A perfect mix for your palate. Enjoy a culinary meal in our cozy warm lavvu with an open fireplace.

  • Café Sápmi: In Café Sápmi the dishes are based on traditional recipes but often has a modern twist. Here you will find traditional food, always locally produced and according to the season.

In Kiruna, you can find pizzerias, kebab, and sushi places too. If you truly want to experience the local cuisine, we recommend trying out some of the suggestions above.

Sámi culture

The Sámi culture holds a significant place in Kiruna and the surrounding region. The Sámi people are the indigenous inhabitants of the Arctic region, including Kiruna. Their culture has deep roots in this area and encompasses a unique way of life, traditions, and languages.

Reindeer herding is a central aspect of Sámi culture and livelihood. Many Sámi families in Kiruna continue to engage in traditional reindeer herding practices, preserving a lifestyle that has been passed down through generations.

There are Sámi villages around Kiruna where you can learn about Sámi traditions and engage with the local community. Jukkasjärvi, for example, is a Sámi village located near Kiruna and is known for its Sámi culture and crafts.

When visiting Kiruna, taking the time to learn about and appreciate Sámi culture is a meaningful way to connect with the region’s rich heritage and gain a deeper understanding of the Arctic’s indigenous people. It’s essential to approach Sámi culture with respect and an open mind, honoring the traditions and practices of this resilient and unique community.

We would like to close our post by reminding you that respecting the local environment and wildlife is crucial to protect the fragile arctic during your adventures in Kiruna.

Thank you for reading our guide! We hope you enjoy your trip. We look forward to seeing you on a Lights of Vikings Tour soon!

A SWEDISH LAPLAND STORY

Swedish lapland's guide to, the morning train arrives in kiruna on a summer day in july. the city is known for its mine, nature and culture. all year round, under the aurora borealis or the midnight sun, kiruna is interesting for the world’s travelers. but because of the mine, the whole town is now moving. so how do you write a guide to a city that won’t exist in a few months other than that there is a rush. you have 48 hours to do something exciting in a city that will soon be another..

Morning: When the train arrives in Kiruna the last part of the journey has been dominated by the view towards the Kirunavaara mine. The one who, in a sense, sets the rules for the city. You decide to take the bus into town and walk away to Camp Ripan , the hotel you booked this evening. If you have an old image, or memories of Kiruna, you can quickly revise the image. The city’s old skyline, with famous architect Ralph Erskine’s classic block “Ortdrivaren” and the city’s old entertainment center Scandic Hotel Ferrum is now being dismantled. In a way sad. But when Erskine himself was asked what he thought should be done with the Ortdrivaren block – when it was clear that the city had to move – he is said to have replied: “Blow it up”.

Lunch: Check-in at Ripan is a breeze and you can book dinner as well as SPA at the facility. Both award-winning experiences. The kitchen is one of Europe’s most eco-friendly and Aurora SPA has won a prize in the World Luxury SPA awards. The SPA ritual, like the hotel itself, takes its strength from the cultures that meet in Kiruna; of the settlers, the Sami and the Tornedalings. After you leave your things at the hotel, put on your hiking boots. Lunch will be at nearby STF Malmfältens Folkhögskola – judging by the number of mining trucks outside the school, the lunch is worth the money. That’s right.

Afternoon: The area around Camp Ripan and the school are parts of the “old” Kiruna that remain. It is land that will not be affected by the mine’s growth in the near term. After lunch you walk along the tracks in the forest, which in winter are fantastic cross-country tracks but now suit runners and hikers better. You hike to the top of the Luossavaara mountain .

About Kiruna

Kiruna is a small mining town located smack centre of the Aurora oval. Home to Abisko National Park, Sweden’s highest mountain Kebnekaise and the ski resorts Björkliden and Riksgränsen, and the original Icehotel in the small village of Jukkasjärvi, by the Torne River. The name means “meeting place” in Sámi. Kiruna is also a town on the move (yes, they’re moving an entire town) towards a sustainable future for its inhabitants.

Have a chat with the local tourist information for more insights: kirunalapland.se

Curious about living in Kiruna?

Check out kiruna.se

Afternoon tea: At the foot of Luossavaara mountain, some new buildings have been erected, but several of Kiruna’s classic wooden houses have also been moved here. Not least the Hjalmar Lundbohm building, Kiruna’s first real house, where the superintendent himself often welcomed Sweden’s financial as well as cultural elite. It is impossible to ignore the fact that the city played an enormous role in modern Swedish industrial history. But Hjalmar Lundbohm also worked for the culture to gain a foothold in the Arctic. Today, the building is a café run by Spill . Among good pastries, I learn something about the farm and about the city, as well as discovering some beautiful art. Among other things, a wood chest painted by Nils Nilsson Skum.

Evening: You walk through the Norrmalm district, where the classic Mattojärvi ice farm is located. This is Sweden’s oldest existing ice rink and has shaped a number of hockey players. Not least Börje Salming, one of the all time greats who called “Matto” his second home. At Camp Ripan, you enjoy your SPA ritual and an extra moment in the sauna, before taking a seat at the table in the restaurant. Here you can experience flavors from the cultures that have characterized this city since the mine came into being. Kalix löjrom and lamb, Västerbotten cheese and gahkku, reindeer and char, all in a perfect order.

Morning: The tour down into LKAB Visitor Centre is a three-hour excursion into the underground. But here, 530 meters below, you will learn about the mining of the past as well as the future. You decide at the last moment to come along, and are lucky that there is an available seat. The tour is in every way an investment to understand why Kiruna has to move. How the mine helped shape this place.

Lunch: You have decided to change accommodation for the evening. Normally you don’t do that, but since the city is a bit divided, you feel that you want to experience the new part of the city as well. Scandic Kiruna is the alternative. For lunch you visit another classic in the city. Empes has existed in Kiruna since 1945. A classic Swedish “grillkiosk”, which the rock journalist Markus Larsson once called: “A church of class and fat where everyone is welcome”. There are of course many other lunch options. For example, in the new Kulturhuset Aurora in the new center.

Early afternoon: After Empes, which is also to be moved, you go to Kiruna’s church . The red building has been named Sweden’s most beautiful building several times. The church, with neo-Gothic features and a nationalist spirit, is partly reminiscent of a Sami hut. Some of Sweden’s most recognized artists have left their mark on the work. Gustav Wickman was the architect, Prins Eugen created the altarpiece, Christian Eriksson made the twelve gilded statues on the side of the church, but Albert Engström and Ossian Elgström also have works here. Art has always been important to Kiruna. For a long time there was a plan for a 33 meter high Picasso sculpture at the Högalid school. Something that unfortunately did not happen. According to plans, the entire church is to be moved in 2025.

Late afternoon: After a visit in the new center; where, among other things, Kiruna’s bookstore has books about Kiruna’s history and the outdoor shops – Vildmarkshörnan and Höjdmeter – stand out well; you check in at Scandic. The architect Thomas Sandell, from SandellSandberg, has designed the hotel with inspiration from the Giebmegaisi mountain. You cross the square to Kiruna’s new town hall, Kristallen , designed by the Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen. The town hall is a round snow-white building that opens up into a kind of golden living room for people to meet. You take the elevator to the top floor and walk down, floor by floor. Here is Konstmuseet  with various exhibitions. But the walls of each floor of the house hang parts of Kiruna Municipality’s art collection. You meet famous artists such as Britta Marakatt-Labba, Lars Levin, Nils Nilsson Skum, Christian Eriksson and others. But also artists with typical Kiruna connections, such as Aili Kangas and Alvar Jansson.

Dinner: At Momma’s Steakhouse you go for the Shiitake soup as a starter and suovas for the main course. The restaurant name Momma’s has been brought with it from the Ferrum hotel to the new Scandic. The restaurant is an institution in Kiruna’s history, dating back to 1969. The name Momma belongs to the mine, after two Dutch brothers who tried to make mining profitable in the north as early as the 17th century. But if you don’t want to eat at the same hotel you’re staying at, there are cafes, pizzerias, kebab and sushi restaurants in the new center. When Elite Hotels completes its new hotel in 2024, there will be more restaurants and a new nightclub in town. But this evening you’ll settle for the view from the roof bar at Scandic.

Packing up: You eat breakfast before heading to the train. The journey is once again about to begin. You could choose to go towards the mountains, to Abisko, Björkliden, Riksgränsen or Narvik on the Atlantic coast. You could also go to Nikkaluokta and the Kebnekaise massif. You realize that you didn’t make it to Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi this time either. But when your train departs along Malmbanan, one of Sweden’s most significant industrial projects, you have time to think about what will have changed by the next time you see each other.

14 Best Things To Do in Kiruna and Swedish Lapland

I spent 3 months working as a dogsledding guide just outside of Kiruna. Lapland life is like none other and it truly is a once in a lifetime destination. Here are the 14 best things to do in Kiruna and Swedish lapland to make the most of this amazing place.

Husky sled at sunrise in Lapland

How to get to Kiruna

There is an airport in Kiruna that has daily flights from Stockholm with either SAS or Norwegian airlines. As well as this, there is an airport transfer bus to the centre of town for each flight or taxis are available, but I recommend to book in advance.

There is also an overnight train that goes to Kiruna and Narvik from Stockholm. If you have the time, this is a lovely way to see some of the countryside.

When to visit Kiruna

The big decision is summer or winter. In winter (when I visited), you have the magical snow, Northern Lights and true winter wonderland environment. In summer, you have 24 hour sun perfect for hiking or summer activities such as kayaking.

The peak winter season is over Christmas and New Year, around this time activities and accommodation tend to be booked up well in advance. If you are visiting in winter, make sure you keep warm with my advice for what to pack for Lapland.

How to Book activities in Kiruna

Most Hotels have an activity centre which means that you can book all the activities through them and normally the pickups are from the accommodation if required. There is a tourist office in Kiruna which offers maps of this city as well as all of the activities on offer. If you are travelling in peak season I highly recommend you book activities in advance to avoid disappointment.

How to get around Kiruna

Lapland (as you can imagine) is pretty remote, there are not lots of public transport options. There are public busses to take you to the ice hotel and the airport. Most places within Kiruna are accessible on foot. If you have reserved an activity they will often offer a transfer to and from. There is 1 taxi company in Kiruna and make sure to book in advance as there are not many.

Where to Stay in Kiruna

There are many great options of where to stay in Kiruna. Here are some of my favourite options for every budget:

  • £££: Icehotel (they offer warm and ice rooms, if you don’t stay here you can still visit!)
  • ££: Camp Ripan
  • £: SPiS Hotel & Hostel

14 Best things to do in Kiruna and Swedish Lapland

Below you will find (in no particular order!) the 14 best things to do in Kiruna and Swedish Lapland:

1) Kiruna Church

Kiruna Church is the most beautiful building in Kiruna. It is a fully wooden church built in 1909-1912. Visit inside and out to really appreciate the beauty and history of this building.

2) Learn about Sami Culture

Sami people are the native population in the Lapland region known for nomadic reindeer herding. To learn about the local Sami Culture, there is a cultural museum in Kiruna as well as an outside experience near the Ice-Hotel. Here you can learn about the culture and possibly meet some reindeer.

3) Fika Time

Fika time is the Swedish culture of having a coffee and cake break. Take a rest from all of your exploring and activities to have a coffee by the fire in one of Kiruna’s cafes.

4) Snow Sculptures and Ice Slides

Kiruna snow festival happens every year in January so if you are visiting at the same time it is definitely a must see. Artists from all over the world create sculptures from snow and ice. These sculptures last for months afterwards and are very beautiful. The year I was there, they also created ice slides which were very fun!

5) Icehotel

15 minutes’ drive outside the city of Kiruna, one of the region’s most popular attraction is the Icehotel . Icehotel has hotel rooms carved out of ice that are an artwork in themselves. You can choose to stay in the Ice Rooms at a balmy -5°C, there is a seasonal winter installation as well as all year round ice rooms called ‘ Icehotel 365 ’.

Icehotel wedding room

If sleeping in the cold is not your thing, you can choose to visit the rooms to appreciate the art. As well as this there is an ice bar in which all drinks are served in ice glasses. Not one to miss!

6) Cross Country or Downhill Skiing

In central Kiruna there is a downhill ski slope with 2.5km of slopes. The location is lovely but if you have been skiing in the alps, it might not be up to expectations. If you are new to the slopes this is a great spot to start! There are also many cross-country ski tracks around the town and the outskirts if you would like to have an active day out.

7) Snowmobile trip

If you love some adrenaline and have a bit of a need for speed, snowmobiling is for you. Many companies run trips in which you can drive yourself, this is a really fun way to see more of the Lapland landscapes.

8) Northern Lights

No trip to the arctic circle would be the same without seeing the magnificent northern lights. The best way to find the northern lights is to leave all source of light pollution. Northern lights are hard to predict but if there is a clear sky then you never know, you could be lucky!

9) Shopping

Search for some of the local sami products in one of the local shops in Kiruna. You can find reindeer skins (best for outside seating), some traditional Sami Knives or even some really cosy socks or gloves to keep you nice and warm. As well as gifts, you can find outdoor gear shops that just in case the cold is getting to you.

10) Dog Sledding

The highlight of your trip to Kiruna! I am slightlyyyy impartial as a spent 3 months working as a dog sled guide but many of my guests told me that dog sledding was the highlight of their trip. I worked at Husky Tours Lapland . You should definitely choose them as they are the only company in the region that uses private trails so you have the true wilderness experience. As well as this, because I have worked there I know for certain their dogs are treated really well. You can choose to drive your own sled or have guides drive your sled so you can relax and enjoy the view.

11) Visit the Kiruna Mine

Kiruna is home to the largest Iron Ore mine in the world. LKAB (the mining company that owns the mine) offers guided tour around the mine displaying the techniques used by the mine to extract the Iron. The depth and size of the mine is also why the centre of Kiruna is being moved by 2 miles! The whole city is on the move is one of the most interesting facts about Kiruna.

12) (Ice) Fishing

Surrounded by lakes and rivers, fishing is a great way to get your dinner in Lapland. In the winter, you can drill down into the ice and try your luck with the water below. The true ice fishing way is to lay on a reindeer skin as you watch your catch below.

13) Animal ‘Safaris’

It’s not the Serengeti, but you can go on animal watching safaris. Home to moose, reindeer and a wide range of birds, escape into the forest to see if you spot some animals. If you choose to hire a car in the area, make sure to keep an eye out for animals as they don’t always seem to care that they’re on a road.

14) Arctic Circle Train Trip

There are 2 daily trains to Narvik, the journey is approximately 3 hours. This is a really scenic route that you can do to see more of the countryside in a leisurely way.

Next stop, the Arctic Circle!

Now you know the 14 best things to do in Kiruna and Swedish Lapland, you are good to go. Enjoy this truly incredible part of the world!

The Best Free Things to do in Kiruna Sweden

This post is about things to do in Kiruna. The northernmost city in Sweden that is famous for its long winters, tundra landscapes, Saami culture, Saami food , the largest iron ore mines in the world and space technology.

Kiruna is a popular destination for those who want to visit Swedish Lapland. I myself was inspired by its location far up north and by the Kiruna magnetometer. In the Netherlands there is hardly a chance to see the northern lights, but on the rare occasion that there is, it is predicted by the magnetometer at the Swedish Institute of Space physics in Kiruna.

Somehow I imagined Kiruna to be an arctic winter wonderland. In reality, Kiruna was quite different from my expectations. It is also a mining town in the process of being moved to allow the iron ore mines to expand.

As a result, Kiruna simply isn’t the most beautiful city in Sweden. In addition, almost all the things to do in Kiruna will cost you. Northern light tours, arctic wildlife safaris, snowmobiling and husky sledding will bring you spectacular sceneries. But you will easily spend more than a 100 Euros for a 2 hour tour.

That said, there are still plenty of things to do in Kiruna that make it worth a visit. Yes, Kiruna can be expensive, but you can make it as expensive as you like. The biggest draw in Kiruna is the natural beauty of the tundra landscapes that surround the city. Because of Allemansrätten, the right of public access to nature, it’s absolutely free to roam around in the arctic wilderness

In this post I will share with you all the free things to do in Kiruna to help you stay within your budget when you visit the far north of Sweden.

Going into nature is one of the free things to do in Kiruna

Free things to do in Kiruna

Kiruna church.

The Kiruna church is one of the largest wooden buildings in Sweden. It was built in 1912 by the LKAB mining company and is supposed to resemble a goahti, a traditional Saami tent. In 2001 it was voted to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.

In the future the church will have to be relocated, like most of the city center. Due to the mining industry the ground has become too unstable. The mining company that once paid for its construction will now rebuild the church, piece by piece, on a new location.

Kiruna church is one of the free things to do in Kiruna

Hiking the midnight sun trail

If you want to have spectacular views over the tundra landscapes and the mines without leaving Kiruna I can recommend to hike the midnatsolstigen.

The midnatsolstigen, or the midnight sun trail is a 5 kilometer hike up Loussavaara mountain. As the name suggests it is a great hike to enjoy the midnight sun. However, even at other times during the year you will have a beautiful view over Kiruna. The hike starts at camp Ripan. From the center of Kiruna it is a 20 minute walk to the start of the hike.

Luossavaara mountain

The midnight sun trail brings you all the way up to Luossavaara mountain. Loussavaara mountain is actually an inactive iron ore mine. Nowadays it is also a ski slope in winter for the people of Kiruna. If you want to enjoy the beautiful view without the hike, you can drive the road up to Luossavaara as well.

Abisko National Park

Abisko National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Sweden and for good reason. In summer it is a hikers paradise. In winter it is one of the best places on earth to see the northern lights. Because of Allemansratten, there is no entrance fee and access to the park is completely free of charge.

Personally, it was one of my favourite national parks on my trip in Swedish Lapland. When you drive from Kiruna to Abisko the landscapes get more and more spectacular. The mountains, the views over Tornetrask lake and the Abisko canyon.

It makes for a great day trip from Kiruna or you can choose to stay there for a couple of days and try out the different hiking trails in the park. For me, Abisko Alone makes Kiruna worth the effort to get this far north in Sweden.

How to get there : The best way to reach Abisko from Kiruna is by train or your own car. The 1.5 hour drive is incredibly scenic with beautiful views over lake Tornetrask. There are two trains that run from Kiruna to Abisko every day. You can check the Swedish railway for the most recent timetable. There is also a daily bus from Lanstrafik norbotten that leaves in the afternoon.

Abisko National Park is one of the free things to do in Kiruna

Lake Torneträsk

Lake Torneträsk is the sixth biggest lake in Sweden. On your way to Abisko National Park you have spectacular views on the lake all the way. It is usually solid frozen during the long winter when it is possible to hike over the lake. In summer you can go for swimming and fishing.

Lake Tornetrask

Esrange space center

Kiruna and space have a long history together. The Swedish Institute of Space physics built its headquarters in Kiruna in 1957 and now includes a well established Kiruna Space campus for further education in space technology and space physics.

In 1964 the construction of the Esrange space center started to facilitate rocket launches, satellite tracking and further space research. The latest addition is the Kiruna Spaceport where in the future they plan to conduct commercial human space flights.

While most of these institutes are not open to visitors, the Esrange space center, 45 kilometers north east of Kiruna has a small visitors centre that is free. You can even get a free cup of coffee or tea. It’s very small, but very informative.

How to get there : there is no public transport so unfortunately this is only an option if you have your own car. Follow the E10 to Jukkasjärvi and then turn left on the Paksuniemi road. You will find the visitors centre at the end of this road.

Esrange visitor centre is one of the free things to do in Kiruna

Jukkasjärvi

Jukkasjärvi became famous overnight because of the beautiful Ice hotel that is built every year out of snow and ice from the nearby Torne river. At an average of 800 – 1000 Euros a night you can sleep in a beautifully designed ice world. Looking at these prices, The ice hotel probably isn’t on your mind when you are looking for free things to do in Kiruna. However, there is much more to Jukkasjärvi than the ice hotel alone.

Jukkasjärvi makes for a nice day trip from Kiruna. The small town has a scenic location on the Torne river and is dotted with the typical swedish wooden homes. It is also a great place to learn about Saami culture, because it has its origins as a Saami marketplace. The word Jukkasjärvi comes from the Saami word Čohkkirasjávri that means lake of assembly.

One of the most historic free attractions in Jukkasjärvi is the wooden church from 1607. It is the oldest church in Swedish Lapland and, although small, it is definitely worth a visit inside.

The colourful paintings in front of the church depict both Christian and Saami traditions. On the left panel we see not only Saami people in their traditional clothes, but also Lars Levi Laestadius, a 19th century priest who worked hard to spread christianity among the Saami in northern Sweden. Nevertheless, the church is full of symbols of ancient Saami mythology if one pays attention.

How to get there : There are between 5 to 6 buses per day between Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi. It’s a short 30 minute journey. You can check Lanstrafik Norbotten for the most recent timetable.

Jukkasjarvi church

Northern lights

There are lots of expensive northern lights tours out there, but this natural phenomenon is completely free of charge. All you need is a dark and clear sky and a bit of luck that there is enough sun activity. That said, the further away you get from the light pollution of the city, the more spectacular the show will be and this is exactly what the northern lights tours do. They bring you to a place away from the lights of Kiruna.

Now, if you have your own car you could do this yourself as well or you could choose to stay a night somewhere out of the city. The reindeer lodge in Jukkasjärvi or any of the hotels in Abisko could be great choices for this.

Abisko is considered to be one of the best places in Scandinavia to see the northern lights. Because it is in the rain shadow of the Skanderna mountain range, Abisko has more clear nights than anywhere else in Sweden. Good chances are that when it is cloudy in Kiruna, it is not in Abisko. You could go to the expensive Aurora Sky station in Abisko, but all you really need is a dark spot away from street lights.

As you need dark skies, the northern lights season runs from September till April. Contrary to what you might think, the complete dark months of December and January aren’t the best time to see the northern lights. You have a bigger chance around the equinoxes in September and March. This is when the earth’s magnetic field lets more solar particles interact with the atmosphere.

Midnight sun

Kiruna is high above the arctic circle and the midnight sun shows itself from the 27th of May till the 14th of July. That doesn’t mean that the sun is high up in the sky 24 hours a day. Instead there will be a sort of prolonged sunset and sunrise, including all the different colours in the sky that come along, in which the sun never really slides below the horizon.

This is best viewed from some kind of viewpoint such as Luossavaara mountain that you can reach by car or hiking the midnight sun trail.

Budget things to do in Kiruna

The following things to do in Kiruna are not exactly free, but are reasonably priced compared to the expensive outdoor activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling.

A visit to the LKAB mines

Kiruna has the largest iron ore mines in the world and they play a big role in the development of Kiruna. So much so, that the whole city is now being replaced as the ground has become unstable. All paid for by the LKAB mining company.

They also offer underground tours to explain the mining process and the production of iron. There is also a visitors centre with a museum. The tours are very informative and good value for money.

Sleeping a night in the famous Ice hotel is probably not within the average travellers budget. However, It’s more than just a hotel. During the day it is also a museum.

In winter you can visit the ice hotel winter and ice art exhibition. Every year this part of the hotel is built from the snow and ice from the nearby Torne river and every year the design is different. It is only open from December till April when the structures melt back into the river.

It is now also possible to sleep on ice year round in the permanent ice hotel that includes also an ice art exhibition as well as an ice bar.

Day tickets allow you to see the unique and impressive ice art exhibitions without paying the exorbitant prices for a sleepover.

Ice hotel in Jukkasjarvi

Sami culture at Nutti Sami Siida

If you want to learn more about Saami culture in Kiruna I can truly recommend the outdoor Saami museum of Nutti Sami Siida in Jukkasjärvi. Here you can interact with reindeers and try Sami cuisine at the reasonably priced cafe Sapmi. I had reindeer burgers here and was able to try the local cloudberries with vanilla ice cream. Both were absolutely delicious.

They also run the reindeer lodge outside of Jukkasjarvi with several cabins in the woods. Here you will be in the midst of nature and in winter its a great way to see the northern lights without a tour.

If you are really interested in Saami culture I can also recommend a visit to the small town of Jokkmokk , 215 kilometers south of Kirunsa.

Cafe Sapmi at Nutti sami siida

Try Sami Cuisine

Finding a reasonably priced restaurant in Kiruna that was not fast food or not thai was a bit of a challenge. However, it is still possible to try Sami delicacies without breaking the bank in Kiruna.

I already mentioned the Cafe Sapmi at Nutti Sami Siida in Jukkasjarvi that I highly recommend. A personal favourite in Kiruna itself was Spis mat och dryck for its extensive menu full of local specialities such as elk meat, reindeer and arctic char. Also in the budget category is Landstrom Kok en bar . I didn’t think it was as good as the food I had at Spis mat och dryck, but the reindeer stew I had wasn’t too bad either.

Kiruna Travel tips

Where to stay on a budget.

Kiruna was definitely one of the more expensive places for accommodation on my Swedish Lapland roadtrip . I ended up staying at Camp Alta that was by far the cheapest option, but it is a bit outside of Kiruna so you will need your own transport. They have some nice and clean self catering cabins in the woods with a scenic location at lake Alta.

If you prefer to stay in Kiruna itself. Good budget options are the Malmfaltens Folkhogskola or the Spis Hotel & Hostel

Torne river

When to visit Kiruna

You can visit Kiruna all year round, but the seasons have a big influence on the things to do in Kiruna. Being high above the arctic circle, Kiruna has long and dark winters with a thich blanket of snow from December till April. Therefore winter is all about winter activities such as snow mobiling, dog sledding and watching the northern lights.

Summer as well as early autumn and late spring is a great time to go hiking. In Summer, the Kungsleden that starts in Abisko is very popular. In autumn it will get colder and days will become shorter. However, the autumn colours make this actually one of the most beautiful times to visit Abisko.

Personally I visited Kiruna in autumn. Read here about my experiences visiting Lapland in October .

How to visit Kiruna

The train is one of the best and most sustainable ways to travel to Lapland . From Stockholm there are daily night trains that run to Kiruna and Abisko. I took the night train from Stockholm to Lulea and it was a very comfortable experience.

Sustainable Travel in Kiruna

Like many Arctic regions, Kiruna is affected by climate change that has a huge impact on the local Sami people . The Sami, an indigenous community in Lapland, have faced historical discrimination and challenges related to their land rights and cultural preservation. Climate change is now another challenge to their unique way of life.

Furthermore, Kiruna is a mining town, and the mining industry raises further questions about environmental sustainability, resource depletion, and the impact on local ecosystems and the Sami communities that live in and around Kiruna.

Before traveling to Kiruna it is good to learn more about the culture of the Sami people. Traveling sustainably in Swedish Lapland, involves conscious choices that minimize your environmental impact and support the local community.

Support the local community : You can support the community by purchasing goods and services from local vendors, artisans, and restaurants. To support the Sami there are excellent artisanal handicrafts that you can buy.

Stay in small scale sustainable hotels : It is also better to stay in locally-owned bed and breakfasts to support the local economy directly. These accommodations often have a more positive impact on the environment compared to large hotels. You can try to look for guesthouses or hotels that prioritizes sustainable practices.

Use public transportation : Most people fly into Swedish Lapland, but taking the comfortable night train from Stockholm to Kiruna and Abisko is a more sustainable option. Once in Swedish Lapland there are public buses between most cities.

Leave no Trace principle : Swedish Lapland has lots of natural beauty and mountains. When hiking, stick to designated trails when they are there, avoid disturbing wildlife or picking plants, and leave no trace of your presence. Ensure you take all your trash back with you and dispose of it responsibly.

To avoid single-use plastics, invest in reusable items. For example, you can bring your own water bottle with a filter that you can refill at your accomodation. At last, use biodegradable and eco-friendly personal care products to minimize pollution of water sources.

I love that you are featuring free things to do while visiting here. It’s always great to know that when you are travelling from afar that there are some no or low cost options.

So interesting! I saw a glimmer of the Northern Lights when I was in Alaska, but I’d love to get a better view of them someday. That Ice Hotel is always intriguing to me too. Thanks for sharing about your trip.

You’ve got me imagining aliens landing at the spaceport and then lodging in the ice hotel :p

This place sounds amazing. So much to do and see for free, or very little, but I imagine I’d also be splurging on a night in the ice hotel, and an arctic wildlife safari. I’ve been to Sweden several times (we have family there) but never this far north. I did live in the Yukon for many years so I’m familiar with the northern lights and the midnight sun, but I’d love to experience the Swedish landscape, and the Saami culture. Great post.

This place seems so interesting to visit! I am especially tempted to see the Northern lights and the midnight sun! Which means I should go there twice as they aren’t at the same time of the year. Thanks a ot for all the tips!

There are some really interesting things to do in Kiruna. I work in mining and would be really interested in visiting the underground iron ore mine. I had never heard of that spacesport, it sounds really cool! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Swedish Lapland sounds amazing. These lakes and landscapes are stunning! I’ve caught the midnight sun but have yet to experience the Northern Lights. What a magical place to see them!

Sweden looks so beautiful! I really hope to go next summer. Seeing the midnight sun is so high on my bucket list. 🙂

what a great article! Free things to do are amazing, and when it’s in a location as pretty as Kiruna, you can’t go wrong!

I loved my trip here, but will be sure. to add a couple of these ideas to my list whenever I go back!!

Tourist’s guide to Kiruna – Sweden’s northernmost city

The city of Kiruna is an industrial town in Sweden, which appeared on the map in 1900. And even if it is not striking in size, numerous historical sights and warm weather, its primeval property remains pristine northern nature, clean fresh air and a measured rhythm of life.

City of Kiruna

General information

Coat of arms of the city of Kiruna

Kiruna is the northernmost point of Sweden, located near the Finnish and Norwegian borders (Lapland, Norrbotten County). Its name comes from Giron, which in Sami means “snow-white bird.” By the way, she not only gave the city her name, but also settled on its coat of arms along with the iron sign, symbolizing a well-developed mining sector.

Kiruna is a small (15.92 sq. Km.) And relatively young city, whose age is just over 100 years, and the population does not exceed 25 thousand people. However, this does not prevent him from remaining one of the most developed and popular tourist destinations in Sweden. There is an airport, highways, and a railway connection connecting Kiruna not only with Stockholm, but also with other settlements of the country.

Northern Lights

The main distinguishing feature of this harsh town is its close proximity to the north pole, due to which truly unique natural phenomena can be observed in Kiruna. So, from May to July, the city stays in the zone of the polar day, and from the beginning of December to the end of January, a quiet polar night reigns here, the darkness of which the northern lights dilute with amazing beauty. It is precisely because of him that thousands of tourists flock to this snowy region every year. To satisfy the needs of all comers, tour operators organize weekly tours that allow not only to see a grandiose natural phenomenon, but also to come close to the life of the peoples of the North.

Dog sledding

Available in Kiruna and other fun. Due to the dense snow cover and stable weather, truly winter activities are especially popular here – snowmobiling, dog sledding, skiing and creating sculptures from snow blocks. If you wish, you can visit the Sami settlements, go to the space center, dine under the starry sky, drive a car along the ice track, watch wild moose or go horseback riding. Thanks to this, Kiruna is often called the winter capital of Europe. In addition, the city has several cafes and restaurants, as well as a huge shopping center where you can buy everything from groceries to souvenirs.

The city of Kiruna cannot boast of a large number of attractions, but, believe me, those that are will make you admire.

Church of Kiruna

To visit Kiruna and pass by the oldest city monument is simply impossible. A wooden parish church or church, as locals call it, was built in the early 20th century in the style of Norwegian church architecture. The author of the project was the famous architect Gustav Wickmann, who decided to give the temple the shape of a tent or Sami yurt. The interior design of the shrine was handled by Prince Eugene himself, the uncle of the current king and a successful landscape painter, whose numerous works can be seen in the main art galleries of the country. But the construction of the facade “laid on the shoulders” of the Swedish football player Christian Ericsson. Today, Kiruna Kyrka is considered one of the largest and most beautiful wooden buildings in all of Sweden.

Kiruna Kyrka

Address: Kyrkogatan 8, Kiruna 981 22, Sweden.

The frosty weather prevailing in Kiruna most of the year should not prevent visiting another city attraction – underground mines. The main brainchild of the mining concern LKAB’s Visitor Center in a day produces so much ore that it would be enough to build 6 Eiffel towers. For a year it makes 30 million tons!

Iron Ore Mines

But even if you do not want to personally go down to the mine, you will surely hear echoes of explosions that are heard shortly after midnight and lasting no more than half an hour. Do not be afraid, this is not the tricks of the weather and the beginning of hostilities, but just the result of the work of miners. Unfortunately, such devotion to their work could not but affect the appearance of the city – most of the streets of Kiruna in Sweden are covered with huge cracks, because of which local residents have to urgently leave their homes. And not so long ago, information appeared in the press that all houses, which are the cultural heritage of the country, will be moved to safer places. In accordance with the new plan, the move will take place gradually and will last until 2033. At the site of demolished buildings will appear a park that separates the city from industrial areas.

Address: 17 Lars Janssonsgatan, Kiruna 981 31, Sweden.

Designed by Arthur von Schma-Lenze, the Kiruna Stadshuset is considered the most famous building in Kiruna. Unlike most typical buildings, this town hall has a rather unusual interior decoration. The floor in it is made of expensive Italian mosaics, the door handles are made of birch and deer horns, and the walls are faced with Dutch handmade bricks and pine, brought from the Pacific countries.

City Hall

Currently, the city administration and several permanent art exhibitions are located in Stadshuset. And here you can see the layout of the new city, which shows the approximate date of the transfer of certain buildings.

Not every tourist city can boast of having a real Ice hotel, and in Kiruna it is considered almost the most important attraction. Located 18 km from the city center, Ice hotel is one of Sweden’s most famous and most visited destinations.

Ice hotel

The hotel, made of pure snow and ice, has about 80 rooms. Not only is each of them decorated according to an individual design project, but also the furniture here is carved by the hands of famous world artists. Naturally, the temperature inside is quite low (no more than + 9C), so visitors are given extra winter clothes.

One of the premises of the Ice Hotel

Guests of the Ice hotel have a unique opportunity to spend the night on Carpe Diem beach, the entire territory of which is covered with deer skins. At dawn, they can move into a comfortable room with a plasma TV, cable channels, a bathroom, a dining area and free Wi-Fi. The hotel’s restaurant serves traditional Swedish dishes made with local produce.

Comfortable room

Visitors have at their disposal a warm lounge area, where you can enjoy hot drinks and snacks, and Icebar, which offers cocktails in ice cream glasses. Among the attractions include free half-hour excursions, rafting, fishing, snowmobile tours, fishing and hiking.

Icebar Ice Hotel

The ideal time to visit the Ice hotel is from December to April. In other months, you may just not see him! The fact is that due to seasonal changes in the weather, the hotel is rebuilt every time. To do this, the best craftsmen, designers and architects come to a village lost in the vastness of Lapland. Thanks to them, ordinary ice blocks turn into a real work of art. The cost of one night stay at Ice hotel is 130 EUR. A shuttle service and a sauna with a hot tub and a wood-burning bath are available at a surcharge.

Address: Marknadsvägen 63, 981 91 Jukkasjärvi, Sweden.

How to get to Kiruna?

Airport in Kiruna

There are several ways to get to Kiruna. Firstly, in Kiruna there is an airport that receives planes from the Swedish capital, Stockholm. From there, taxis go to the city, requesting from 17 to 35 EUR, and buses arriving at the terminal upon arrival of the flight. The fare is about 12 EUR. Secondly, trains depart from Kiruna railway station to many cities not only in Sweden, but also in neighboring Norway.

The city of Kiruna is not only beautiful, but also a truly magical corner. Here, each of you will be able to feel like a hero of Andersen’s fairy tale and immerse yourself in the heady atmosphere of quiet polar nights. And let the cold weather be only a minor obstacle to a great vacation!

The Perfect 3 Day Itinerary for Your Winter Wonderland Trip to Kiruna Sweden

Kiruna Itinerary

Before we dive into the perfect 3 day itinerary for Kiruna, let’s orient ourselves with where Kiruna is situated and what makes it a prime winter travel destination!

Kiruna is a small mining town located in Sweden’s gorgeous, snowy Lapland region. It has around 17,000 inhabitants (most of them reindeer). The Sámi tribes have lived in this arctic area for over 3,500 years, and traveling to Kiruna is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the Sámi and their history.

You can arrive to Kiruna from Stockholm via train, but given the fact that winter train travel in Sweden can be unreliable and slow, I recommend that you opt for the quick flight from Stockholm on an airline like Norwegian or Scandinavian Airlines. The flight is a mere 1.5 hours and will give you some great views as you descend into tiny Kiruna airport (KRN).

So what makes Kiruna an ideal winter destination?

If you’re in Stockholm and are asking yourself “where is all the snow?” the answer is that it is up here in the north! When I visited, the locals told me that they were still missing a meter of snow (that’s just over 3 feet for you Americans!) and that’s with a meter+ already on the ground!

kiruna sunset

This snow bounty creates endless options for fun winter activities like husky sledding, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, and exploring a hotel made entirely out of ice!

Because the options can be so overwhelming I’ve created this streamlined 3 day itinerary for Kiruna. Follow the day planner below and you’re sure to have a thrilling, memorable and snow-tastic time here!

3 Day Kiruna Itinerary Summary :

  • Day 1 – Meeting Rudolph at Nutti Sámi Siida and unwinding with a sauna session
  • Day 2 – Touring the original Icehotel and riding a sled into the sunset with Husky Tours Lapland
  • Day 3 – Hiking through a winter wonderland, fika-ing at Bageriet i Puoltikasvaara, traversing Lappeasuando Bridge, and ending the day at Kiruna Pastorat (one of Sweden’s coolest churches)

Side Note: You should definitely set aside some time when the sun goes down and conditions are right to hunt the Northern Lights. But because they are not guaranteed, I’ve left them out of this article. There’s so much to say on this topic that it warrants its own post!

Kiruna Itinerary Day 1: Meeting Rudolph at Nutti Sámi Siida and Unwinding with a Sauna Session

Nutti sámi siida  .

Location: Marknadsvägen 2 in SE, 981 91 Jukkasjärvi

Duration: 2-4 hours

If you’re interested in more meaningful travel, visiting Nutti Sámi Siida in neighboring Jukkasjärvi will be right up your alley!

Historically the Sámi led a nomadic existence dictated by the migrations of reindeer, and they have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to these amazing animals. You’ll learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about reindeer, reindeer herding, and the history of the Sámi.

I particularly enjoyed learning about the ingenious ways that the Sámi survived the harsh arctic winters. As a Chicagoan, I thought that I was a hearty winter person, but they put me to shame!

At Nutti Sámi Siida you can spend quality time with the local reindeer while feeding them lichen (a type of moss and the reindeer’s primary food source in winter).

Kiruna Reindeer

Note: when deciding whether or not to support an “animal tourism” activity I weigh the following factors – (1) whether the animal is domesticated or semi-domesticated and whether the activity benefits the animal or (2) whether the activity enables the survival of the animal.

Learning about and feeding the reindeer at Nutti Sámi Siida fulfills both of the above since they are semi-domesticated and their survival now depends on human intervention.

Due to climate change, arctic reindeer numbers have crashed, falling from almost 5 million to around 2.1 million animals. Warming has caused taller vegetation to grow, out-competing lichen. Less lichen = less reindeer surviving through the winter.

But all hope is not lost. The Sámi people and the tourist dollars that support places like Nutti Sámi Siida provide lichen for  the reindeer under the Sámi’s care.

I did the “day visit” option which included an informative tour and time with the reindeer (200 SEK, ~$21). You can visit their website to book a time slot, but I had no issue showing up and buying an entry ticket. You can also book more extensive tours with them if you’re so inclined!

Evening Sauna Session

Location: Campingvägen 5, 981 35 Kiruna

Duration: Until you reach nirvana

After all that time outside with the reindeer, you’ll likely need a defrost. So why not do it in the most Swedish way possible – a sauna session!

My rental came with a sauna on site, HEAVEN! If you want the same experience, you can check it out and book here . This rental home was close to Kiruna but just far enough away to feel like my own slice of snowy paradise. I highly recommend it!

Swedish sauna 2

If you booked elsewhere and there’s no sauna on site, Camp Ripan is an excellent option. It has saunas as well as indoor and outdoor pools.

There’s also a cold room in case you’re into the Swedish brand of torture (I mean, “relaxation”) that involves freezing yourself before hopping into the sauna. Repeat the cycle 2-3 times and you’re a bona fide Swede!

Entry prices can be found here . And though a bit steeper for non-guests, they’re well worth the amount of relaxation that you’ll enjoy here!

Kiruna Itinerary Day 2: Touring the Original Icehotel and Riding a Sled into the Sunset with Husky Tours Lapland

This day covers two of my most memorable experiences from this region – touring the Icehotel and going on a sunset husky ride with Husky Tours Lapland. The latter has an option where they pick you up straight from the Icehotel, making these two activities are the perfect pairing!

Location: Marknadsvägen 63, 981 91 Jukkasjärvi

Duration: 2-3 hours

The epitome of sustainable hotel architecture, the seasonal suites at the Icehotel are built with ice harvested from the mighty Torne River. Staying here is like staying inside a giant snow sculpture!

Icehotel Kiruna

The property is divided into the Icehotel 365 (the ice suites that are available all year round), the seasonal suites (which are created anew each winter, and the warm rooms. Whatever experience you’re craving, the Icehotel has it.

But it’s the ice suites that make this place truly unique!

Every year, when the Torne River turns to ice, a new Icehotel is created in the small village of Jukkasjärvi in the north of Sweden. The ice of the river transforms to design and architecture – an ephemeral art project and the world’s first and largest hotel built of snow and ice. via Icehotel

Having never stayed in an ice-room, I wasn’t sold on the idea of staying the night. So I opted for the tour instead, a way to dip my toe into the icy waters so to speak.

I arrived at around 10am to explore the grounds at my own pace before the tour started at 12pm.

As an architecture lover, I was in heaven! Every year, the world’s best graphic designers, engineers, architects, and artists submit proposals to have their designs brought to life here.

Out of 120-150 proposals only 15-20 are selected!

Each seasonal suite is meticulously crafted based on the winning submissions.

Icehotel suite

Our tour guide explained how much work goes into the lighting design (which is apparently extremely important given how transparent the “building blocks” are). A team of lighting designers works on every room to showcase the icy artwork and give life to the artist’s vision.

I left feeling very happy with the tour of the Icehotel , but I’d definitely consider an overnight stay next time. It  would give me more time to try some of the hotel’s “cool” activities like the ice sculpting classes, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling.

Icehotel icebar

Husky Tours Lapland

Location: They can pick up from the IceHotel at 1pm!

Duration: approximately 4 hours

Just as the Icehotel tour ended around 12:45pm, my ride from Husky Tours Lapland showed up ready to take me for the ride of my life!

I had booked the Sit & Drive Combo Tour from 1pm-5pm. This tour gives you the chance to be the sled “driver” for half the time and the sled “rider” for the other half. The latter is a more relaxing experience, but I was keen to give husky mushing a go so the combo was perfect.

Husky Tour

Husky Tours Lapland is a family run company with a phenomenal reputation. They clearly care for their huskies and treat them like family members!

Plus the sledding setting here is gorgeous and private, taking you through a true winter wonderland.

On arrival, we suited up into special thermal snowsuits to make the ride extra cozy, met our husky team (every couple gets a team of 5-6 huskies), and got instructions for operating the sled.

The instructions were fairly simple – keep a healthy distance between your sled and the next and gently apply foot pressure on the brake when you need to increase that distance. Slowly increase break pressure until you come to a complete stop. If you need to stop quickly, there is a back break that will dig into the snow for an emergency stop.

The guides were in the lead sled so all I had to do was mimic what they were doing to keep the proper distance.

Because the sun sets so early here in the wintertime, you may be treated to a gorgeous sunset as you ride through the forest. I wasn’t expecting it, but it was breathtaking!

Dog Sledding

When we got back to the start, our husky team was (deservedly) quite hungry and we got to unharness and feed them. Be careful, huskies are not dainty eaters and will slurp their stew right onto you if you don’t move back quickly!

I then got to meet and play with the most adorable sled-dogs-in-training: baby huskies! My heart just about burst from the cuteness overload!!

And as if this day hadn’t yet made it into the travel record books, the sweet guides had a roaring fire waiting for us! Tea, coffee and a cinnamon roll completed this unforgettable moment as we bonded with other travelers around the fire and exchanged stories about our homelands.

Kiruna Itinerary Day 3: Hiking through a Winter Wonderland, Traversing Lappeasuando Bridge, and Ending the Day at Kiruna Pastorat

If you’ve been following this Kiruna itinerary, you had a snow-filled, activity-packed day yesterday. So for Day 3 I’ve set a relaxed pace, balancing time spent outdoors and with time spent getting cozy indoors. It’s a perfect way to say “until next time, Kiruna”!

Hiking Through a Winter Wonderland

Location: Coordinates 67.438608, 21.101048 (input into Google Maps)

Duration: Until you lose feeling in your toes or spot a moose, whichever comes first

Seize the day by waking up early(ish) and enjoying a beautiful, snowy trek in the woods. Drive to the coordinates above and you’ll arrive at a frozen lake. From the lake, you’ll see trails branching off into the woods.

If you’re lucky you may spot a moose (they are known to frequent these parts). I had googled “moose prints” so that I could track these giants, but alas, they were nowhere to be found.

Even moose-less this trek was gorgeous! The snow glittered in the early morning light like millions of tiny crystals. Everywhere I looked I saw fluffy white snow.

Kiruna Winter

It was so lovely, I often forgot to watch my step and my foot sank into several feet of snow!

After about an hour or so I had worked up on appetite and it was time for the first fika of the day…

Fika: Functioning as both a verb and a noun, the concept of fika is simple. It is the moment that you take a break, often with a cup of coffee, but alternatively with tea, and find a baked good to pair with it.  Anna Brones via https://www.thekitchn.com/

Bageriet i Puoltikasvaara

Location: Europaväg 45, 982 05 Gällivare

Duration: You’ll never want to leave…

I didn’t include a list of restaurants in this itinerary because  there is so much deliciousness in this region that it warrants its own post!

But I had to include Bageriet i Puoltikasvaara, a place so good that I came here not once, not twice, but 4 TIMES!! I think that may be a record.

Kiruna Bakery

This place is what fika is all about – coffee and tea complimented by out-of-this-world pastries and cakes.

The proprietor is the nicest lady. She was super patient with me as I looked the sweets area up and down, asking questions in my broken Swedish-English. It was so hard to choose!

Once I spotted the semla though, I knew I had to try it! It’s a traditional Swedish sweet roll with whipped cream and almond paste and it was exceptional!

semla swedish pastry

The tarts and blueberry rolls were nearly as good. You really can’t go wrong.

And if you can’t subsist on sweets alone, get any of delicious sandwiches. The veggie sandwich and the shrimp toast were my personal favorites!

Lappeasuando Bridge

Location: Lappeasuando 3, 982 99 Gällivare

Duration: 30 min. – 1 hour

If you can tear yourself away from Bageriet i Puoltikasvaara, I recommend that you take a quick drive 5 minutes north to Lappeasuando Bridge.

You should be able to park by Lappeasuando Lodge. From there, it’s an easy walk to the bridge.

Lappeasuando Bridge Kiruna Sweden

When I was here, everything was covered in snow, which made the bridge even more magical. I walked up and down it, marveling over the frozen, snow-covered lake.

Just as I was about to leave, it started to snow and my dream of being inside a snow globe came true!

Kiruna Pastorat

Location: Finngatan 1, 981 31 Kiruna

Since you’re already heading north, end the journey in Kiruna proper and see one of Sweden’s largest wooden buildings – Kiruna Pastorat (Kiruna church).

Completed in 1912, this gothic revival giant is one of the most unique churches I’ve ever seen. The auburn color and sharp, origami-style angles are so striking!

Kiruna Pastorat Church

There is also a matching, free-standing bell tower a few feet from the entrance. If you time your visit properly, you can enjoy the bell ringing as the sun sets, a picture perfect way to end your time here!

Visiting Kiruna In Winter? 21 EPIC Things To Do In Kiruna In Winter

By: Author Kris

Posted on Last updated: November 22, 2022

Will you be heading to Kiruna in Sweden this winter? Then read here what you absolutely should not miss in Kiruna during the winter.

Kiruna is located in the heart of Swedish Lapland. In winter you are here in a fairytale landscape where you expect to bump into Santa Claus every minute.

There are thick packs of snow that crunch blissfully under your feet during a winter morning walk and the trees are all nicely wrapped with a beautiful white blanket.

Sounds fantastic right? However, that’s just the beginning.

What makes a trip to Kiruna during the winter really incredible are the activities you can do there. A dog sled trip, seeing the northern lights, or a ride on a snowmobile, ….. 1 for 1 experiences that you will talk about for a long time to come.

Read here what you absolutely must not miss during a holiday in Kiruna in winter.

Best Things To Do In Kiruna In Winter

Here’s our selection of the most amazing Kiruna winter activities.

Visiting the ice hotel is a must while being in Kiruna in winter

Visit The Ice Hotel In Swedish Lapland

Each year from the moment the Jukkasjärvi river freezes over, the owners of the ice hotel start with the construction of a new edition with a lot of grandeur. Every year they try to outdo the previous year’s hotel.

Artists from all over the world are invited to make ice sculptures and all rooms and public areas are lavishly decorated.

The artists give each room a unique interpretation, so no 2 rooms are the same.

The beautiful ice sculptures in the rooms.

What You Need To Know

The ice hotel is a real hotel where you can stay overnight, but you can also view all the rooms as a visitor.

Dress warmly because it is obviously quite cold in the hotel. After you have visited all the beautiful rooms, you can warm up with a drink at the ice bar.

What Others Are Saying

Everyone agrees that the ice hotel is a fantastic experience. Only the beautiful ice sculptures make a visit to the ice hotel worthwhile.

They offer both cold as well as warm rooms. The cold rooms are those in the ice hotel itself.

So-called warm rooms are regular hotel rooms in a separate building. Staying in one of those is of course not nearly as unique.

The cold rooms are however not ideal for multi-day stays. If you’re looking for a multi-day stay you may want to book a warm room for the extra days.

The entrance of the Sami village in Kiruna

Visit The Sami Village – Nutti Sámi Siida

The Sami still have a special status in Lapland.

Despite the fact that some now have normal jobs, there are still many who are engaged in traditional activities such as reindeer breeding.

Did you know that this is a protected activity that can only be done by the Sami?

If you want to learn more about the original inhabitants of Lapland, a visit to this Sami village is recommended.

You will learn about their culture, their unique religion, and of course, you will also encounter reindeer.

You will learn all kinds of things about the Sami that are sure to surprise you.

This Sámi museum is within walking distance of the ice hotel. You can also come here for a traditional lunch of reindeer or fish.

The cafe/restaurant is a cozy place to have lunch and children find it a lot of fun to feed the reindeer.

The ultimate Christmas feeling: go for a ride in a reindeer sleigh

If the snowy landscape makes you dream of a white Christmas, a sleigh ride with a reindeer is the icing on the cake. Here you can really feel like Santa Claus as you whiz through the trees with your sleigh.

The excursion is offered by Sami and during this tour, you will also learn a lot about their way of life. It is highly recommended!

The Sami are a fairly closed ethnic minority and this tour is a unique opportunity to spend a day among them.

You go to a real Sami village and as you spend some hours among them you get a good feeling of their day-to-day activities.

Of course, the reindeer sleigh ride itself is also a unique experience.

There are few tours like this one and it is only offered on select days in small groups.

This makes availability rare. To avoid disappointment it’s best to book well in advance.

Feeding the reindeer and the sleigh ride are loads of fun.

The tour is done with a small group and the Sami are very friendly and welcoming.

They tell endlessly and with great passion about their way of life.

Seeing the northern lights is a must-do in Kiruna in the winter

Admire The Northern Lights

This will probably top many travelers’ bucket lists when they go to Lapland. The Northern Lights are indeed something magical.

In the Sami religion, it is still attributed to the gods and now that we have seen it ourselves I believe that without a scientific explanation you do not know what is going on above your head.

The dancing green shadows are an impressive sight. Knowing the scientific explanation we truly enjoyed the spectacle but I can understand how it can be terrifying if you’re unaware of their origin.

Seeing the Northern Lights is a truly unique experience.

There are many cloudy days during the winter in Lapland but even on clear days, the Northern Lights are not always visible.

This is related to solar activity, the more active the sun has been the easier it is to see the Northern Lights.

You have the best chance of seeing it at a place with little light pollution because then you might already see the green wisps dancing through the air on days with little activity.

The more light pollution there is, the more active the Northern Lights must become to be visible.

If you stay in a lodge in the middle of nature, you can probably see it from the lodge.

If you’re staying in Kiruna, or on the outskirts of town, it’s best to drive a little further from town to increase your chances.

If you don’t have a rental car, you can book a tour.

These tours will take you to a beautiful remote place, very often a lakeshore, from where you should be able to see the magical spectacle.

In addition, a tour also provides a place to warm up and some snacks and drinks.

Do you want beautiful pictures of the Northern Lights but don’t know how? Then you can book a photo tour. You will then receive a camera with all the correct settings. Here you can read our in-depth review.

The only thing you need to bring yourself is an SD card to take your lifetime memories home.

Nobody can guarantee that you will see the Northern Lights, not even the best tour, but all people that have been on a tour are enthusiastic about their experience.

Hiking around an across the frozen lakes is a great thing to do in Kiruna in the winter

Enjoy Great Winter Hikes

The beautiful landscape of Kiruna invites you to take some nice winter walks.

A must-do hike is the Midnight Sun Trail.

It starts at Camp Ripan and winds around the cross-country trails before making its way up the mountain.

You have beautiful 360-degree views along the way.

Once you start the descent at the other side of the mountain you can watch the local skiers perform their tricks on the jumps of the Luossabacken ski area.

From this side of the mountain, you also have a beautiful view of the city.

The awe-inspiring 360-degree views from the top of the mountain.

The trail is about 7 kilometers. Be sure to dress warmly, preferably in layers. There is often a cold wind at the top of the mountain.

Snowshoes are a must for this hike.

While the trail is usually groomed for the first kilometers it is not groomed completely.

When you get higher up the mountain you will get knee-deep in the snow without snowshoes.

The midnight sun trail gets its name because this walk leads past fantastic viewpoints to enjoy this natural phenomenon.

Hikers do however agree that the hike is worth doing during all seasons.

People speak of vistas that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

The trail starts right next to Camp Ripan : Campingvägen 5, 981 35 Kiruna, Sweden

Riding a dog sled is a great thing to do in Kiruna in the winter

Ride Your Own Dog Sled

This was the absolute highlight of our trip.

If you experience the enthusiasm from these huskie dogs, you can’t help but put a smile on your face.

As soon as the dogs notice that they are going to go for a ride, they start jumping and barking. You can tell that they look forward to the excursion as much as you do.

You can choose to come along as a passenger, but there are also tours where you can drive your own dog sled.

We went as a passenger a few years ago in Banff (Canada) and found it disappointing, therefore this time we opted for a tour where we would be the drivers.

The difference is huge and it makes the experience much more fun. We definitely recommend going as a driver.

It gives an incredible thrill to explore the snowy landscape with a dog sled.

No real steering skills are required to drive your own dog sled.

In the corners, you have to slightly lean into the corner and the sled is equipped with two brakes that you will have to use if you go too fast or get too close to the person in front of you.

There may be some uphill sections where you need to help the dogs a little although my pack never had any problems going uphill.

Instead, I needed to brake because I always caught up with the person in front of me.

Your tour guide will demonstrate everything before you head off to explore the polar landscape with your dogs.

Many tours will only allow you to go as a passenger, so be sure to book enough in advance not to miss this wonderful experience.

We did this tour in Abisko. Here you can read our complete review of our dog sledding tour in Abisko.

Below we share a well-rated tour from Kiruna and the one we did in Abisko that we can absolutely recommend.

We still speak in superlatives about our experience and in the reviews, you also only read positive reactions.

Everyone agrees that it is a unique experience to explore this beautiful landscape with these adorable dogs.

Dog sled tour Kiruna

Dog sled tour Abisko

If you want something even more special, you could also opt for an overnight dog sledding tour.

You will be driving your own dog sled, enjoy a 3-course meal and spend the night in a winter cabin. If you are lucky, you might even spot the Northern Lights. This sounds like an unforgettable experience and is still on our bucket list.

Swedish Lapland is largely flat, but that doesn’t stop the Swedes from going skiing.

The few mountains that exist are equipped with ski lifts and ski slopes.

The ski areas are small compared to those in the Alps, but certainly large enough for a day of skiing fun during your trip.

The ski area of Luossabacken is adjacent to Kiruna, you can see the mountain from all over the city.

Here are 4 ski slopes and both chair and drag lifts.

Further up north is Abisko where there is also 1 slope and many opportunities for off-piste skiing.

Another 10 minutes further north is the ski area of Björkliden with 23 slopes and 5 lifts.

However, the Swedes themselves love Riksgränsen the most. Riksgränsen borders Norway in the far north.

You can usually enjoy skiing here until midsummer (24 June).

With 5 lifts and 17 slopes, this is also the largest ski resort in Sweden.

The ski areas might be small but the snow conditions are usually superb and better than those in the Alps.

If you live skiing you should reserve a day in your itinerary to hit the slopes.

You will be able to rent your equipment at most lodges. The ski pass will be 40€ -45€/day.

Take A Snowmobile For A Spin

Residents of Kiruna and Abisko hop on their snowmobiles to go grocery shopping but most of us don’t often have the opportunity to ride on these cool machines.

Snowmobiling has fans and foes.

While some think it’s the ultimate way to explore nature others find it loud and they say that they can’t find peace in nature with the roaring engines and smell of exhaust fumes.

One thing is certain though, residents of Lapland love their ski-doos and you will see plenty of them during your stay, including special traffic signs that warn you about crossing snowmobiles.

It makes Kiruna the place for that once-in-a-lifetime experience of riding a snowmobile.

Riding a snowmobile takes some getting used to but as long as you stay on groomed trails it’s not all that hard and enjoyable, even for those without any previous experience.

On these excursions, you ride in a column behind a guide.

Of course, you don’t stay on the normal roads but follow special snowmobile trails that lead you between the beautiful snow-covered trees.

For many of us, this may be a unique opportunity to ride a snowmobile, certainly in such a stunning decor like Swedish Lapland.

Your guide will start by explaining everything you need to know about the snowmobile.

A driving license is required to ride the snowmobile. If you don’t have one you can still join the tour as a passenger.

Everything about this tour is top-notch, the guide, the snowmobile, as well as the decor.

Attend The Kiruna Snow Festival

The first edition of the Kirinu Snow Festival took place in 1986. Since then not a year has passed without a festival.

The annual snow festival has been organized in Kiruna since 1986.

It is a festival like no other with well-known activities on the agenda, such as ice skating and dog sledding, but also lesser-known competitions such as the World Snowblower Championship.

The participants have to get through a 20-meter-long pack of snow with their snow blower as quickly as possible.

If you want to experience the festival, you have to be in Kiruna during the last weekend of January.

Even if you can’t be there during that period, you can still enjoy part of what is described as the coziest festival in the snow.

After all, the main event of the festival is the ice sculpture competition with participants from all over the world.

The works of art remain on display until the sun melts them away in the summer.

The festival is fun to attend and the ice sculptures are certainly worth making a small detour for.

You can see the ice sculptures for free in the Snow Festival Park.

This is located at the intersection of the Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen and the Gruvvägen, within walking distance of the center of Kiruna.

Relax In The Spa

Winters can be cold in Kiruna. Even though there are enjoyable sunny days, sometimes there are also days with cold and gusty winds.

If you have been out for several hours during such a day you will long for a place to warm up again.

Hot chocolate can do the job but it is even better to indulge in the Swedish tradition of relaxing in the sauna. Several hotels in Kiruna have a sauna.

If you want a more extensive sauna experience, you can go to Camp Ripan.

The Aurora Spa at Camp Ripan has 2 saunas and a steam bath.

There’s also a hot outdoor pool where you can gaze at the stars.

With a bit of luck, you might even see the Northern Lights.

All sauna visitors at Camp Ripan receive a welcome basket containing products for a face mask, scrub, and foot bath.

The Aurora Spa is part of the Camp Ripan hotel but is not included with your hotel stay.

Also non-guests can use the Spa facilities.

It is advised to make advance reservations because the spa is small and only allows a limited number of guests.

We should add that chances of seeing the Northern Lights from the outdoor pool are rather small because the hotel is situated close to the center of Kiruna.

In Swedish culture, the sauna is usually enjoyed naked.

This is not the case at the Aurora Spa but if you’re planning on hitting the sauna somewhere else it is a good idea to inform in advance about the dress policy.

Visiting the LKAB mine is one of the things you can do in Kiruna

Visit The LKAB Mine

LKAB is the largest employer in Kiruna and the wider area. It is a giant iron ore mine that supplies most European countries.

Spending a half-day in dark underground tunnels might be the last thing you want to do once you have seen the spectacular landscape of Swedish Lapland.

That’s understandable, but we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

During the visit, we went from one surprise to another.

Initially, this was about the huge tunnel network and the size of the tunnels that can be used by buses, trucks, and huge excavators. Then, during the tour, we were amazed at the technological ingenuity of the operation of this mine.

You can’t help but be impressed by this mining complex and its modern way of working.

Tickets for the visit can be purchased online in advance.

The tours depart from the Kiruna Visitor Center on the Välnortstorget.

There is ample parking space at this square. You do need to use a parking disc. We forgot this and found a fine of €50 when we returned from the tour.

This is the address of the visitor center (which doubles as the Kiruna tourist office). From here the bus leaves for the mine.

Moose spotting in Kiruna

Go Moose Spotting

Swedish Lapland is a good place to spot moose.

The animals manage to move gracefully through the snowy landscape despite their massive size. Sometimes they venture close to the roads.

The chance of spotting moose along the E10 is small.

This is a relatively busy road and it is not recommended to stop along this road. (except in the designated parking spaces)

Don’t worry, just south of Kiruna a road leaves for Nikkaluokta, a tiny Sami village. This is a quiet road with many opportunities to see these impressive animals.

Do not drive too fast and keep a close eye on both sides of the road. It is amazing how well these large animals can hide once they are among the trees.

We’re animal lovers so we can’t get enough of spotting wildlife.

That being said, I think everybody will love seeing these beautiful animals.

Would you rather be a full-time spotter instead of a driver or do you not have a car?

In that case, you can also book a wildlife safari.

There are many snowshoe trails near Kiruna

Venture Out On A Snowshoe Hike

You haven’t truly been to Swedish Lapland if you haven’t at least once put on those goofy-looking snowshoes.

Walking with such large shoes may feel a bit strange, but you will find that these shoes really come in handy on the less trodden paths.

It is not necessary to have your own snowshoes, you can rent them on site.

While you can hike the popular trails it is best to book a tour with a guide because they take you to places you would not otherwise go.

The tour below goes to Kurravaara, near the Torne River.

The guide will help you spot tracks of lynx, wolverines, foxes, and other animals. And hopefully, you will see the animals for real.

You can do the tour during the day or also in the evening when you have a chance to see the beautiful northern lights.

From the top of the hill, you have a nice view and the scenery of the walk is absolutely top.

Kiruna is great place for ice fishing

Go Ice-Fishing

The thick layers of ice have never stopped the local inhabitants of Lapland from fishing in the winter.

After all, winter also had its advantages, thanks to the ice, everyone, even those who do not have a boat, can catch fish from the middle of the lake or river.

These are the best locations with the most and the biggest fish.

If you want to experience what ice fishing is all about, then you can grab your chance in Swedish Lapland and book an ice fishing tour.

The guide will take you to a suitable location by sled and provide all the necessary equipment, including some snacks and drinks to enjoy while you wait for the fish to bite.

During ice fishing, most of the time you sit still, waiting for the fish to bite. Therefore, be sure to dress warmly.

Glide Through The Snowy Landscape On Cross-Country Skis

You’ve been out already on your snowshoes, why not try something different and put on a pair of cross-country skis?

Lapland is a beautiful landscape to explore and there is a wide choice of cross-country trails, from easy loops to trails that wind endlessly through the trees.

Adventurers can even go on multi-day treks.

By the way, cross-country skiing is one of the favorite pastimes of the local residents.

The lack of mountains means that people reach for cross-country skis more often than for regular skis.

You can rent the equipment on-site. Know that you can choose from two different types of skis.

The real cross-country skis are very narrow, but there are also versions for beginning cross-country skiers that are still slightly wider (but still narrower than the skis you use for skiing).

With your skis, you can go wherever you feel like. Still, I would recommend asking the rental shop for some suggestions.

There are both groomed and non-groomed trails.

In our experience, the groomed trails are slightly easier for absolute beginners.

Let me end by warning you that cross-country skiing is not as simple as it seems.

Despite our skiing experience we fell regularly and were left with some bruises from our trip.

Don’t let this stop you however, we still found it a fun experience and something you have to try at least once!

Go Ice Climbing And Conquer An Icefall

If cross-country skiing and snowshoe hiking all sound too much day-to-day, then we have the ultimate adrenaline-pumping activity for you.

You head straight up the mountain armed with an ice pick and ice clamps.

No experience is required and it is good to know that the guide will explain the required technique beforehand.

He or she will also secure you so that you can safely tackle the ice wall.

There is an artificial ice wall at Camp Ripan where you can go ice climbing.

For the real thing, you need to head to Abisko where the ice climbing is done on a real frozen waterfall in the middle of an impressive gorge.

Indulge In The Swedish Tradition Of Fika

If you’ve just gone ice climbing for the first time, you’ve deserved a moment of rest. Then it’s time for Fika.

As the English are always up for a break during high tea, the Swedes know the Fika tradition.

A moment for a nice chat with something sweet and a kaffi (Swedish for coffee). Where the English swear by tea, the Swedes usually prefer coffee.

In the center of Kiruna, you will find Fika by Spis with an extensive selection of cakes and pastries. If you do not have a sweet tooth you can skip the pastries and have a sandwich instead.

Go Sledding

Sledding is an ideal pastime between 2 tours or activities.

Near Camp Ripan you will find a very suitable slope.

If you stay with them you can also use the sleds from their shop for free.

The shop manager can also explain how to get to the slope. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the reception.

You will get a solid speed if you start at the very top of the slope.

Make sure you have good waterproof gloves and dress warmly, we got quite a bit of snow in our clothes.

The church is a must-see when in Kiruna

Wander Through Kiruna’s City Center

Kiruna is a unique city, not least because the city is currently being moved.

The move is in full swing and today you can already see the new modern town hall in what will later become the new center.

Also, 1 of the protected old buildings has already been moved and for several others, relocations are being planned.

The reason for the move is the expansion of the LKAB mine.

This company reserves a sloppy 1.3 billion euros to be able to expand to the area where the town is currently situated.

During a walk through Kiruna, you will pass several charming houses waiting to be moved.

Be sure to make a small detour to include the Kiruna church.

This imposing wooden building is one of the largest in Sweden.

The architectural style is a tribute to the Sami and is a mix of the traditional Norwegian stave churches with the Sami huts.

The church is impressive from the outside but also very beautiful from the inside.

Kiruna has grown thanks to the discovery of iron ore in the surrounding mountains.

If you want to know more about the rich and sometimes turbulent history of this city, you can book a tour with a guide.

The church currently stands in the old town and is expected to be moved in 2025 or 2026.

The entrance is free.

Visit The Jokkmokks Winter Market

Kiruna celebrates the winter with a snow festival and Jokkmokk does this with the winter market.

The market takes place annually at the beginning of February.

At the time of writing, the 418th edition is already underway.

You will find hundreds of stands on the market and every year there are also numerous performances.

Jokkmokk is almost a 3-hour drive from Kiruna but if you are here during the festival period it is worth considering going to soak up the atmosphere.

The market annually attracts some 40,000 visitors.

Admission to the market is free, admission may be charged for some performances.

Stop At Stejk Street Food For A Juicy Reindeer Meal

If you’re looking for a quick and tasty bite with the very best local meat, this is the place to be.

This simple food stall is selling a selection of reindeer and moose sandwiches. You can also opt for salads and burgers.

You can enjoy your food in the cozy tipi where you can warm up by the fireplace.

You can find this food truck at a gas station just outside the center of Kiruna.

There is a small parking lot with space for 3 or 4 cars.

The owners of this food truck are very friendly, helpful, and funny. The food is very tasty and it is nice to have your meal in the Sami tent. A meal you will remember.

Abisko is a great day trip from Kiruna

Explore Abisko

Abisko is about 100 kilometers further north of Kiruna.

It is an hour’s drive along the E10.

The road is relatively busy as it is the only connection between the 2 cities. Yet this is a scenic route with many photo opportunities.

There is also much to experience in Abisko itself.

Here is an overview of the best things to do in Abisko.

Narvik

Make a day trip to Narvik

Do you want to check off 2 countries in one go? That’s possible! Kiruna is located in the far Northern part of Sweden close to the border of Norway.

If you’ve checked everything you wanted to do in Kiruna off the list you can consider a day trip to Narvik, a quaint village in a scenic Norwegian fjord.

A trip to Narvik will first take you through the beautiful Abisko National Park. As you get closer to the border you will see how the landscape starts changing. High mountains obstruct the distant views we were getting used to in Abisko.

Just before we arrive in Narvik we see the spectacular Hálogaland bridge.

The landscape at Narvik is completely different from Kiruna. The town’s quaint center is worth exploring. You can see it from above by taking the cable car to the top of Mt. Narvikfjellet.

At the war museum, you can learn more about what happened at Narvik during World War II.

It’s a 2.5-hour drive from Kiruna to Narvik. There’s also a train between Kiruna and Narvik but the train schedule is not ideal for a day trip.

FAQs about Kiruna

Here are some frequently asked questions about Kiruna.

Is It Worth Going To Kiruna In Winter?

Absolutely! The beautiful winter landscape in combination with the unique activities will undoubtedly make for a trip that you will not soon forget.

We definitely want to go back again.

How Far North Is Kiruna?

Kiruna is located about 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.

As a result, you experience the so-called polar nights during December, the phenomenon where it remains dark all day long.

During the summer, the reverse occurs.

There is a period when the sun does not dip below the horizon even at night. Locally this is known as the midnight sun.

kiruna tourism

How To Get To Kiruna

There are no direct flights to Kiruna.

You can fly to Kiruna with a stopover in Stockholm or you can opt to just book a flight to Stockholm and continue from there by train or car.

The flight is the most chosen option, together with the train. There are several flights a day between Stockholm and Kiruna and they are usually on time.

Search here for flights to Stockholm or read our post with tips on how to use the flight aggregator sites to find the very best fares .

By Night Train

There is also a night train between the two cities.

The train ride normally takes about 15 hours. The trains are unfortunately not as reliable as the flights. We heard multiple stories of people being delayed several hours.

Finally, you can of course also go by car, although we would advise against that. If you drive non-stop the journey will also take about 15 hours, in line with the train journey.

Even though the roads are usually well maintained and cleared of snow, you have to keep in mind that the days up north are short in winter.

This means you will do a lot of driving in the dark, making the trek quite tiring.

Where To Stay In Kiruna

Where to stay in kiruna to see the northern lights.

Being able to see the Northern Lights from your accommodation has many benefits, not least being able to quickly hop inside to warm up or go to the toilet.

After all, seeing the Northern Lights often means waiting patiently and watching the sky for several hours before going to sleep.

If you want to have a chance to see the northern lights from your accommodation, it is best to opt for a lodge a little outside Kiruna.

Kiruna may not be a big city, but the light pollution from the city means that you have significantly less chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

A place we warmly recommend is Camp Alta Kiruna . This lodge is located about 14 kilometers south of Kiruna in a beautiful wooded area on the edge of a lake.

You will find charming bungalows with shared facilities as well as single cottages with kitchens and bathrooms.

We saw the Northern Lights here on our second night.

kiruna tourism

How To Get Around In Kiruna

We almost always opt for a rental car because it gives you the absolute freedom to do what you want whenever you want.

We also rented a car in Kiruna and recommend that you do the same.

With a rental car you can go out on your own to spot the Northern Lights and you can also organize your own private wildlife safaris.

However, it is not strictly necessary.

Most tours provide a pick-up from your hotel and if you don’t have a rental car you can look for the Northern Lights and wildlife with an organized tour.

For small trips in and around Kiruna, you can use the bus or a taxi. Know that taxis are not cheap.

We heard from a couple that they had paid about €100 to take a taxi from the center of Kiruna to the ice hotel.

Driving In Kiruna In Winter

All main roads in and around Kiruna are kept clear of snow. Several times a day you see the snowblower pass.

Winter tires are mandatory.

All rental cars will be equipped with winter tires and you will also get a winter set including a brush, ice scraper, and something you might not expect, a charging cable (I’m not sure if this comes with all cars but we got one).

The charging cable is to heat your car when it is parked.

It’s really only required when the temperatures drop deeply below freezing point but you’re off course free to use it on other days as well. It ensures that your car is pleasantly warm when you return.

You must be cautious when driving because even with winter tires the roads remain very slippery.

We slipped once ourselves, although without consequences, but it was still a bit of a shock.

You also have to watch out for crossing wildlife.

One day a moose jumped in front of us on the road to disappear a little further into the bushes.

It was a spectacular sight but imagine getting into a collision with such an imposing animal.

What Winter Clothes To Pack

In winter it can be really cold in Lapland. It may snow and there may be a cold gusty wind.

You don’t have to go to Swedish Lapland for good weather, but luckily bad weather is no problem with the right clothing.

What should definitely not be missing in your suitcase is:

  • Thermal underwear
  • Ski pants or fleece-lined hiking pants
  • Warm winter hat and/or balaclava
  • Ice cleats: As it is sometimes slippery, These might come in handy when you go for a walk. Check these posts. Best ice cleats for walking and best ice cleats for boots.
  • Gloves: We advise you to bring 2 pairs of gloves, touch gloves with which you can operate your mobile phone or camera that you can wear under ski mitts or ski gloves

General Tips For Your Kiruna Trip

To conclude, here are some general tips.

The Northern Lights

Grab every chance you have to see the Northern Lights. Of the 10 days, we were in Kiruna and Abisko, at least 7 were with dense clouds.

So take advantage of it if it is not cloudy, you may not get such an opportunity again.

Book Hotels And Tours As Far In Advance As Possible

We were surprised by how quickly some hotels and tours sold out.

If there is something that you absolutely want to do, it is best to reserve it as soon as your plans are finalized. This is also true for hotel bookings.

We also recommend booking through Manawa and Viator.

Both tour operators have flexible booking options, you can cancel most tours for free if something still comes up.

We had booked a number of tours directly ourselves and had to change them due to an adjustment in our planning and this was very difficult.

So save yourself that stress and book as much as possible flexibly.

This also goes up for hotels. On Booking.com most hotels can be booked flexibly.

Always remember to check the booking conditions when you make a reservation.

The cancellation policy is often more strict when booking direct.

We enjoyed our winter trip to Swedish Lapland a full 200% and we hope that with our info we can also offer you an unforgettable trip.

As you can see there is more than enough to do in Kiruna for a well-filled week of endless snow fun.

The mine in Kiruna is the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine. It is a fascinating operation where the ore is mined far below the surface using remotely operated machines and driverless trains. One of the best attractions in Sweden, the LKAB’s Visitor Centre, is located here – a show mine that the Lonely Planet international guide book gave its highest rating.

We go by bus directly from the Tourist Center into the mountain and down to the show mine LKAB’s Visitor Centre situated at level 540 metres. LKAB is currently mining down to level 1365 metres. Our guide will show you around the visitor premises that cover 20,000 square metres. This is an authentic mining environment where displays, films and machines illustrate ore mining and the production of iron. The mining museum relates the century-long history of the mine. The guide will talk about modern mining and how it can cause a whole town to be moved.

LKAB is facing the biggest transformation in the company’s 130-year history. This could become the biggest industry investment ever in Sweden and is the most efficient contribution Sweden can make in lowering global emissions. LKAB’s strategy paves the way for zero carbon dioxide emissions from our own processes and products by the year 2045 and secures the company’s operations beyond the year 2060.
