Visiting The Malta Experience and La Sacra Infermeria

If you’ve decided to make Valletta one of your destinations while you are visiting Malta, a quick trip to  The Malta Experience  and La Sacra Infermeria (also referred to as “The Knights Hospitaller”) is a good option to start off your sightseeing exploration.

The Malta Experience is a screened film that gives you an introduction to the history of Malta and Gozo, translated into 15 languages. Having a better understanding of how Malta has evolved throughout the centuries, helps you to better understand what you’ll come across in museums and places of interest.

Maybe a history show isn’t one of the most exciting things you can think of when on holiday, but it’s a good idea if sightseeing is an important part of your trip to Malta.

In fact, The Malta Experience also includes a short tour of one of the most interesting places to visit in Valletta: La Sacra Infermeria, the Knight of Malta’s hospital – also referred to as The Knights Hospitaller.

In short, La Sacra Infermeria was the main hospital and medical facility in Malta, built in the 16th century. The building and its past use teaches us a lot about the history of the Knights and their impact on Malta and I highly recommend paying a visit.

You can do so in two ways:

  • By visiting the AR (Augmented Reality) Museum Reliving the Sacra Infermeria , which is a really fun way to explore the old hospital. Through the use of an app you can overlay re-enacted scenes as you go through the building, bringing history to life before your eyes.
  • By combining a visit to The Malta Experience with a short guided tour of La Sacra Infermeria.

You can buy tickets directly from the ticket office at the entrance, but if you plan on doing more sightseeing, consider saving on entrance fees by getting a Malta Heritage & Attraction Pass .

They give you access to dozens of Malta’s best museums and attractions. Less hassle, lower fees!

What is The Malta Experience?

Essentially, The Malta Experience is a screened film that covers over 7,000 year history of the Maltese Islands. From early prehistoric evidence of human civilisations, to the various rulers that called Malta their home, to the various wars and conflicts that rocked the country.

Well, that doesn’t sound like it will be brief at all…

Don’t worry! The show itself is all of 45 minutes long so you’ll have plenty of time to fill up your day with other exciting things that you’d like to do.

A short visit will give you an enriched understanding for all the other locations you will visit in Malta.

But my English isn’t that good…

The people at The Malta Experience have thought of that and you get your own audio guide that is available in 15 different languages – Maltese, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Russian, Danish, Japanese, Greek, Portuguese, Bulgarian, Finnish, and Polish!

Take the hassle out of planning your trip to Malta and be an informed traveller!

Is The Malta Experience wheelchair-friendly?

All of The Malta Experience location is wheelchair accessible. A ramp is located at the main entrance which leads onto the external terrace by the bistro.

Lower levels may be accessed by using a lift that is located at the Mediterranean Conference Centre (opposite the site).

Access to the theatre is also possible on a wheelchair, and up to 5 wheelchairs at a time may be accommodated.

Audio guides can be connected to the seats in the front row so you don’t have to worry about missing out on that!

What is La Sacra Infermeria?

The Malta Experience itself is housed within what was originally La Sacra Infermeria, the hospital of the  Order of the Knights of St John to care for the sick. It is also referred to as the Knights Hospitaller (referring to one of the names by which the Order was also known).

Built in 1574, the Infirmary was the most revolutionary hospital in Europe at the time, employing medical practitioners who came up with groundbreaking treatments (such as using honey to treat wounds and serving food on silver plates to prevent the spread of diseases).

The hospital could accommodate over 900 patients, and its construction in the early existence of Valletta was a logical one: One of the core functions of the Knights of St. John (also known as the Knights Hospitaller) was to provide care for the sick and injured.

Throughout the centuries La Sacra Infermeria served several other purposes, from being a medical academy to becoming a centre for entertainment during the Great War and being repurposed as a children’s theatre in more recent years.

Nowadays, the building is referred to as the Meditteranean Conference Centre.

How to get there

The Malta Experience and the AR Museum (Reliving the Sacra Infermeria) are easy to find in Valletta. La Sacra Infermeria is located on the St. Elmo bastions and within walking distance from Valletta’s City Gate. The building as a whole is nowadays named the Mediterranean Conference Centre. The entrance to The Malta Experience is located across the road from the historical hospital building.

This is how to get there using different types of transport:

  • All main bus routes let off at the Valletta Bus Terminus as their final stop, which is a 15-min walk away.
  • From Sliema and The Three Cities, a ferry can also be used to transport you to Valletta instead of the bus!
  • If you are in Valletta and prefer not to walk, bus routes 98 and 198 depart from the terminus every 30 minutes and pass by the ring road near  Fort St Elmo .
  • Electric taxis are also found at different points throughout the city and can transport you anywhere within Valletta for a small fee. You can also rent electric bicycles using Tallinja Bike (app and active internet connectivity required!) from the bus terminus just outside the city. You can ride your bike to a bike station at Fort St. Elmo, which is just around the corner.
  • If you are renting a car or getting a taxi, the site is accessible through Barriera street and there is a drop-off point conveniently right outside. Parking inside Valletta is difficult and paid during the day, so you’re usually better off parking outside the city and walking it.

Hop-on-hop-off

You can also take the South Route of the Hop-on-hop-off bus routes to get there. Get your tickets in advance here!

My tips for visiting the Malta Experience

  • The show may be delayed by 15 minutes at certain showtimes
  • Food and drink may not be brought inside the theatre
  • Only service animals are allowed inside.

Reviews of The Malta Experience

Here’s what other travellers had to say after they visited:

What they liked:

  • Very interesting and informative
  • History made easily accessible
  • Excellent guides at La Sacra Infermeria
  • Great overview of Malta’s history that helps you decide what to visit
  • Recommended for families with school-aged children
  • Old hospital tour offers great insight into the work of the Knights there.

What could be better:

  • Don’t expect an exciting 5D show at the Malta Experience – very much a documentary.

  • mel7155 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles An okay documentary for those too lazy to read about Malta’s History through Wikipedia . A run through of Malta’s history . Very documentary type of show that can be a little dry and staid . I watched the show as I was visiting the nearby St Elmo Fort and War museum . It does try to provide an overview of Malta’s history in a very euro-centric perspective type of way so it is not an objective overview of its history . (I.e: we are a bulwark against the ‘evil’ religious centric civilization located in the east and south of Malta ) Buy the ticket as a combi to get a little discount . Decent show though not out of the way type of place I would want to visit . Read more Written 28 March 2024

  • RuthDatalogics 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent context your trip I really enjoyed this introductory film to the long amazing history of Malta. Yes the technology was older but it is impeccable maintained and really what has changed in 3 years compared with 7000 that are included here. Everyone can listen in their own language. Our guide for the hospital tour was a treasure. Some colleagues got an app driven tour and didn’t get half as much info as we did. A fascinating place on a fascinating town in a fascinating country! • bookworm656 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best introduction to Malta and Maltese history! The Malta Experience was recommended to us as a "must do" by a Maltese friend. It did not disappoint! The documentary film is narrated in multiple languages via headset, while the background music is played over the theater sound system. The film covers thousands of years of history, with a focus on the "more recent" events of the 18th century. The guided tour of the Holy Infirmary was well worth the additional cost. (18 Euros combined total/person) Read more Written 23 October 2023

Well worth a visit and the entry fee.The show tells you about Malta, but afterwards the guide takes you to the hospital of the Knights Templar. An interesting tour with a knowledgeable guide. The Knights were ahead of their time regarding medicine.I won,t say more because it will spoil the visit. • kevins684 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A quick informative way to learn a brief but comprehensive history of the island and its people Essentially it's just a 45 minute film with a potted history lesson of Malta back to 4000BC. Important sections of history covered quite extensively then jump forward. Not expecting great things the film was well produced and a really good introduction to the history and people of Malta. And after seeing this you'd be very proud to be Maltese if you are. Read more Written 24 September 2023
  • lesleyconstable2 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The malta 🇲🇹 experience fantastic It was worth the money we paid the bit extra, so we also had the tour behind the scenes. Comfortable seats to sit and listen via headphones about the history of Malta. We both found it very informative When I go away, I do love learning about the history of the place. On a separate note gift shop fantastic, all the staff we met were passionate about where they were . Read more Written 22 September 2023
