leisure trip in french

One of the best parts of going on a holiday in France is getting to eat out and sample food. So, food vocabulary should be in the cards. We’ll give you the basics for a vacation— for an in-depth guide to restaurant vocabulary in French, check out this article.

  • le repas (the meal)
  • le petit déjeuner (breakfast)
  • le déjeuner (lunch)
  • le dîner (dinner)
  • la salle à manger (the dining room)
  • le restaurant (restaurant)

Comme dessert, je voudrais la crème caramel. (For dessert, I would like the crème caramel.)

Recommandez-vous le plat du jour ? (Do you recommend today’s special?)

Je voudrais des escargots. (I would like some snails.)

Make flashcards for the words above and go through them periodically before your trip. You don’t even need to carry around a stack of index cards—there are apps like Quizlet for creating flashcards online and even playing games to test yourself.

French vacation words tend to be highly visual, so consider  making mind maps , or visual diagrams that represent the words you want to learn. There are many examples of mind map templates online.

You can also create a memory palace . The idea of this memorization device is to visualize a location—say, your childhood home—and populate it with the relevant vocabulary. For example, you could visualize a building and each hallway, room or object would be associated with a word you wish to remember.

It’s a great technique for visual learners to create context for seemingly isolated terms.

The best way to remember any new French vocabulary is to learn it in context. And one of the best ways to do that is to watch videos in French from French sources. You can easily find French TV shows and movies on streaming services like Netflix. If you prefer shorter videos, you can find French videos about all sorts of topics on YouTube.

FluentU is another way to hear French how it’s spoken in actual French-speaking regions. It’s a language learning program that uses authentic videos with interactive subtitles as the core of its lessons, along with active learning features like flashcards and quizzes.

The videos on FluentU are sorted by topic, so you can easily find media that’s related to travel, such as news clips about French vacation habits or video tours of French open-air hotels.

You’ll be using the words and phrases below with real French speakers throughout your vacation. So, why not start practicing now?

For example, don’t just learn the word nager (to swim). Start creating sentences, like:

Où est la plage ? J’aimerais nager cet après-midi. (Where is the beach? I would like to swim this afternoon.)

Savez-vous nager ? (Do you know how to swim?)

To ensure your own sentences actually make sense, you can use a grammar checker like Bon Patron .

Now that you’ve used all the tools and resources at your fingertips and you’ve prepared everything for your vacation, you’re ready to go.

Use your new vocabulary as often as you can and you’ll become good at communicating and recognizing repeated words.

Bonnes vacances ! (Have a good vacation!)

FluentU has a wide variety of great content, like interviews, documentary excerpts and web series, as you can see here:

learn-french-with-videos

FluentU brings native French videos with reach. With interactive captions, you can tap on any word to see an image, definition and useful examples.

Hi, I am Christin!

After training as a pastry chef and studying business administration, I traveled a lot and discovered my interest in languages. To find out more about teaching languages, I decided on further training at the Goethe Institute and completed it. During the Goethe Institute "Learn to teach German" course I was able to give individual language lessons and actively support the examination preparation for the Goethe certificate.

My lessons are needs-oriented. That means that learning goals are discussed with you and based on your level of knowledge. Whether grammar, sentence structure, pronunciation, expression or the practice of communication situations: German as a foreign and second language classes are flexible and take place in a group or one-to-one lessons with individual support and are based on your wishes and requirements. The teaching of content and topics takes place according to the respective language level. Building vocabulary, grammar and means of speaking are structured and conveyed logically building on each other. Let's get to know each other in a free trial class. I am looking forward to meeting you!

Christin is a committed and professional German teacher with experience in teaching German face-to-face. Her teaching methods include setting learning goals with her students and giving continuous feedback. Her activities are guided by a communicative approach and she tries to teach her students german vocabulary for everyday life.

Christin E.

I am a professional English tutor with online teaching experience. In my class, you won’t need to memorise long lists of vocabulary. Instead, we will discuss interesting topics and practice language that you want to learn. With my artistic background, I can create creative and fun lessons suited to the student's learning goals. I like using colorful PowerPoint slides, flashcards and videos to demonstrate my learning points. I am a friendly, patient person, because I know that learning a new language can sometimes be very scary. My classroom is a safe, comfortable space that encourages mistakes, because this is the best way to learn. I am creative and use music/dancing where possible to re-energize my students. This makes learning the subjects you don't enjoy, fun, as we may sing songs that target grammar structures or vocabulary.

Forget Aspen. Let's All Go Skiing in Courchevel.

The luxury ski resort in the French Alps is a favorite vacation destination of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

courchevel

In the photograph, titled "Culinary Heights," three men smile as they stand behind a decadent spread of food on the mountaintop:

culinary heights

In the same era Aarons was photographing the après-ski lifestyle, Town & Country sent writers Jeanette and James Egan to explore the "Smoothest Skiing in France" in the magazine's November 1966 issue. "Every skier, or almost every skier, has a recurring dream. In this dream he floats down endless fields of powder in graceful linked turns; the snow is perfect, the sun high, and he can do no wrong," the Egans write. The dream, they conclude, has to take place in the French Alps.

The duo offers a survey of the mountains in the region, and in writing about Courchevel, they note, "An observer once called Courchevel 'the supermarket of skiing,' and it's true that here is everything for the skier, neatly packaged and convenient as a frozen dinner, if more flavorful." They explain how at one hotel, the guest list "netted one queen, three princesses, two princes, two Kennedys, and naturally, Bridget Bardot."

That Courchevel—filled with old-world glamour, royals, luxury, and incredible mountainside meals—still exists. And as Americans look ahead to ski vacations for the 2024—2025 season (or want to squeeze in one final weekend of spring skiing this year), I offer my humble opinion, as a writer who has been skiing her entire life: You should absolutely add Courchevel to your list.

What to know about Courchevel

douniamag britain france royals

Courchevel, located in the French Alps, is part of the vast Les Trois Vallées (the Three Valleys) ski region. It actually consists of four different ski areas, each named for their altitude, but the most exclusive is the highest up the mountain: Courchevel 1850, a favorite of celebrities and royals from around the world. Notably, Prince Willian and Kate Middleton have brought their three children on holiday there . (I heard from a reliable source that the Waleses are seen in Courchevel "pretty much every year." Likely not this year , though.)

It is unlike any ski resort in America. Courchevel 1850's village and restaurants remind me most of Aspen and Vail, but the vast terrain of the skiing is more akin to the resorts of Palisades Tahoe, California and Big Sky, Montana. Throw in the exclusivity of the private Yellowstone Club , and you've got a sense of what Courchevel is like.

How to get there

Traveling to Courchevel from the U.S. may seem intimidating, but with a little planning, it's actually pretty straightforward. Namely, take an overnight flight to Geneva, sleep the entire plane ride, and then drive two and a half hours to Courchevel in the morning.

Instead of renting a car, consider booking a transfer with Alps En Route , who will meet you at arrivals and whisk you to the mountains. The drive goes by the beautiful Lake Annecy ; our driver, Jamie, was from the UK, but had spent years in the Alps, gave us insight into the region, like origin of St. Bernard dogs as search and rescue dogs in the area, or which roads the famed Tour de France takes place on.

Where to stay

six senses courchevel

Upon arriving in Courchevel 1850, my husband and I checked into Six Senses Residences Courchevel , which serves as the perfect base for a ski trip. It's not a classic hotel, but rather a collection of apartment-style suites, perfect for families or groups of friends, with multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and common areas in each accommodation.

"Guests here tend to be discerning travelers seeking a combination of exceptional service, wellness experiences, and access to world-class skiing," André Ferreira, the Residences Manager at Six Senses Courchevel, tells T&C. "The vibe is upscale yet laid-back, with an emphasis on holistic well-being and environmental sustainability. We are a family and friends oriented residences which after a day of ski on the slopes everyone can get together in a warm and cosy residence."

There are some key advantages to staying in residences over hotel rooms on any ski trip: Not only do they offer additional space, but also, all the residences feature fully equipped kitchens and living areas. And there's nothing better than getting back from a long day on the slopes and relaxing in your sweatpants on the couch.

But ultimately, the best part of staying at the Six Senses is that it is just a quick, 5-minute walk to the base of Courchevel 1850, where three different gondolas await to take skiers to different parts of mountain. If you don't feel like shlepping your skis to Europe, it's easy to rent skis through SkiSet , attached to the residences, and then they'll have your boots and skis waiting for you at the base of the mountain.

Where to ski

view on the slopes and vanoise mountains, courchevel ski resort, tree valley skiing area, savoie, france

I grew up skiing in the Berkshires (in Western Massachusetts), in southern Vermont, and in Colorado (the mountains of Beaver Creek, Snowmass, and Vail were family favorites). I also worked as a ski instructor in college, at my school's small mountain in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire. Nothing compares with skiing in the Alps. Unlike in the U.S., there aren't exactly marked trails—it's more wide-open. There are groomed runs ("on-piste") and plenty of powder ("off-piste"), and skiing for every ability level.

Plus, because Courchevel is part of the Three Valleys ski area (which is all on one surprisingly affordable pass), you can easily ski over to neighboring resorts, like Méribel and Val Thorens, from Courchevel. Americans will be astounded at the prices: For six days of skiing in the Three Valleys, it's around $325. (Compare that to just one day at Aspen Snowmass: $244.)

Where to shop

slim aarons courchevel

Every designer you can think of has a boutique in the main town center, and on the slopes, you'll see more luxury skiwear on one gondola ride than you'll see in an entire day at a U.S. resort. Chloé ski goggles ! Prada ski suits ! Gucci jackets ! There is even a Moncler store on the mountain. Literally: You can ski up to it.

Where to eat

Lunch is an elaborate affair in Courchevel—and reservations are practically required. Our best mid-day meals were at La Soucoupe (if the weather is nice, sit outside for the incredible views, and make sure to get the pain perdu) and Le Chalet de Pierres (next to aforementioned Moncler store on the mountain).

If you're staying at Six Senses, book a dinner at Sumosan , a contemporary Japanese restaurant located in the hotel, and be sure to try the yellowtail with truffle yuzu vinaigrette. Have a sweet tooth? Indulge it at Cedric Grolet's desserts at Les Airelles Courchevel; the famed patissier creates desserts that are works of art in the shape of fruits. We had three, with the overarching flavors of mango, grapefruit, and pistachio and raspberry. But the menu changes throughout the season, so you'll be sure to be wow'd by whatever you get.

On April 8, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in France.

This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in France includes 24 Three Key hotels, 38 Two Key hotels, and 127 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Here’s everything you need to know . Or, head below to look at all the Keys.

La Reserve Paris

The Palaces: A Distinctly French High Luxury

Expect: Butler service, high quality spas, and sumptuous spare-no-expense design. The government of France itself bestows an official Palace designation, with French tourism officials judging the most luxurious hotels in France to ensure they provide particular amenities and services (a spa, a multilingual check-in desk, a concierge service, etc.) and an excellent representation of the country. Out of 31 official palace hotels in France, many earned at least one Key — and several make up our Three Key hotels. Of the palaces that earned at least One Key, you’ll find a mix of the most historic ( the Four Seasons George V ), the most modern ( Le K2 Palace ), and the newer takes on the traditional form ( La Réserve Paris ). All are exceptional. Also read: Every Three Key Hotel in Paris

Les Sources de Caudalie — Bordeaux

The Country Darlings: Chateaus and Vineyards

Our first annual list of Key hotels in France confirms the supremacy of these two mainstays: chateau and vineyard accommodations. Look to Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey and Château de la Gaude as particular examples of Two Key hotels that combine both. Or look just outside Bordeaux, to Les Sources de Caudalie . Built on a natural hot spring and operated by the famous Caudalie beauty brand, it’s a particularly fascinating Three Key property on the grounds of the Château Smith Haut-Lafitte vineyard.

Planning to Combine Business and Leisure Travel? You’re Not Alone.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are trying to figure out where their duty of care obligations begin and end.

On a Sunday in late January, Melinda Buchmann, who lives in Florida and supervises client relations for RevShoppe, a 30-person remote company advising organizations on sales techniques and strategies, arrived in Banff, Alberta, to help set up a four-day company meeting.

The last day of the event, her husband, Josh, a director of strategic partnerships for the delivery company DoorDash , who also works remotely, joined her. They spent two leisurely days hiking in Banff National Park and visiting Lake Louise.

“I take advantage, because I don’t know when I’m going to return,” Ms. Buchmann said of the decision to combine downtime with a business trip.

As postpandemic work life has changed, and arrangements now include full-time office attendance as well as hybrid and remote work, so, too, has business travel. The phenomenon known as bleisure, or blended business and leisure travel, was initially embraced largely by digital nomads . But such combined travel is now also popular with people outside that group . Allied Market Research, a subsidiary of Allied Analytics, based in Portland, Ore., estimated that the bleisure travel market was $315.3 billion in 2022 and would reach $731.4 billion by 2032.

As employees increasingly add leisure time to their business trips, companies are struggling to determine where their legal obligation to protect employees from harm — their so-called duty of care — begins and ends. And workers may think that because their trip started with business, they will get all the help they need if something goes wrong on the leisure end. Instead, they should generally consider the leisure part of a trip as a regular vacation where they cover all expenses and contingencies.

Companies are responsible for knowing where their employees are during a business trip, covering expenses if an accident or emergency occurs, securing new lodging if a hotel is damaged, even swapping out a broken down rental car. Still, it’s not entirely clear if that coverage ends completely after the conference or the last client meeting.

Companies recognize that threats are increasing, said Robert Cole, senior research analyst focusing on lodging and leisure travel at Phocuswright, a market research company. They are trying to figure out how to take care of a valuable company resource, the employee, without leaving themselves open to financial risk or potential litigation.

“Crafting a comprehensive policy that balances business objectives, employee well-being and legal considerations can be challenging,” Nikolaos Gkolfinopoulos, head of tourism at ICF, a consulting and technology services company in Reston, Va., wrote in an email.

Employees may be on their own without realizing it and may be surprised by out-of-pocket expenses if they require hospital care abroad or evacuation, said Suzanne Morrow, chief executive of InsureMyTrip , an online insurance travel comparison site in Warwick, R.I.

Ms. Morrow said medical coverage provided by a company “is generally only for the dates of the actual business trip abroad.” If travelers are extending the trip for personal travel, she added, “they would want to secure emergency medical coverage for that additional time abroad.”

Employers and employees are left to figure out when the business portion of the trip ends and the leisure segment begins, a significant detail if an employee has a medical emergency. “Where does the corporation liability end?” said Kathy Bedell, senior vice president at BCD Travel, a travel management company.

Companies have varying policies to deal with the new travel amalgam. The chief executive of RevShoppe, Patricia McLaren, based in Austin, Texas, said the company provided flexible travel options and allowed employees to work anywhere they choose.

Even so, there are constraints. The company requires all employees, including executives, to sign liability and insurance waivers when they are on a voluntary company-sponsored trip, such as an off-site meeting. Such waivers typically place responsibility on employees for their own well-being. And if they bring someone, they are responsible for that person’s expenses.

Employees are responsible for requesting the paid time off and notifying their managers of their whereabouts, although that part is not a requirement. Managers have to ensure adequate staffing, Ms. McLaren said.

Elsewhere, employees may not bother to mention the leisure portion of their trip. Eliot Lees, a vice president and managing director at ICF, said he had been on trips as a child with his parents when they combined business and leisure. His parents were academics, who would piggyback vacations onto conferences.

Now he does the same. “I don’t think I ever asked for approval,” he said. (ICF has no formal business-leisure travel policy. It’s allowed as part of personal time off.) After a conference in the Netherlands last year, he spent four days hiking in the northern part of the country.

“I go anywhere, and take more risks than I should,” he said. He said he didn’t carry personal travel or accident insurance.

Any nonchalance may quickly evaporate if a threat emerges. Security experts say even low-risk locations can become high-risk for a few days or weeks of the year.

“Companies are concerned about losing visibility into a traveler’s whereabouts if they booked flights and hotels outside their corporate travel management company,” Benjamin Thorne, senior intelligence manager in London for Crisis24, a subsidiary of GardaWorld, wrote in an email. “The company may think the traveler is in one city when, in reality, they could have booked a holiday package to another nearby city. This lack of visibility by the company makes it difficult to support travelers when a disaster occurs.”

He also raised the possibility that “a traveler with bleisure travel reservations and expectations may find their work trip canceled due to changes in the risk environment or company policy, disrupting their leisure plans.”

Will a company step in off hours if there’s a problem? “That depends on how you are booked,” Mr. Cole, the senior research analyst at Phocuswright, said. A rule of thumb is the further you get from corporate control, the greater the gray area gets.

Half of GoldSpring Consulting’s clients take the responsibility for the entire trip, said Will Tate, a partner at the consultancy based in Cross Roads, Texas, and a certified public accountant. They don’t want the reputational risk. The other half say: “The business trip ended Friday. That’s when we end our duty of care.”

Some companies are trying to define and narrow the gray area. “If you are clearly on personal time, there is no legal requirement for your employer to provide for you,” said Nicole Page, a lawyer whose practice includes employment law at Reavis Page Jump in New York.

Uber provides employees with advisories before a trip, travel assessments, safety tips while traveling and emergency travel assistance, including medical aid, airport travel support, urgent and emergency assistance, and lost or stolen personal property insurance whether they are on business or pleasure travel or a combination.

And at DoorDash, Chris Cherry, head of global safety and security, wrote in an email that “while personal travel is not something we track, we have received requests to extend our travel support capabilities to personal travel.” Mr. Cherry said in those cases, the company has manually added employee leisure itineraries to its travel risk management system and “provided the same level of overwatch that we do for regular business travel.”

The Buchmanns plan to travel this month to Barcelona, Spain, for the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention. DoorDash will have a booth, and Mr. Buchmann will work on the exhibit floor and also entertain clients.

Ms. Buchmann will accompany him. She plans to go sightseeing in the morning, and work in the afternoons and evenings Barcelona time. She will also take three days of paid time off and has shared her plans with Ms. McLaren, the RevShoppe chief executive.

They will stay a day after the conference and plan to visit the Dalí Theater and Museum in Figueres. “I’m sure there will be no shortage of tapas and window shopping along way,” Mr. Buchmann said. He expects to be back at work the next Monday.

This French Museum Displays 1,000 Chandeliers Dating Back to the Middle Ages — Here's Why You Should Visit

In France’s Luberon Valley, one chandelier maker is keeping a centuries-old craft alive.

Siobhan Reid is an NYC-based freelance writer, editor, and copywriter. She is currently the editor-in-residence at The Vintner Project and was previously an editor at Travel + Leisure , covering culture, design, style, and wellness.

In the world of chandelier design, few work harder to ensure that the art form survives than Régis Mathieu. Born in Marseille to lighting designer Henri Mathieu, Régis took the reins of the family business, Mathieu Lustrerie , at 19.

Today, when he isn’t restoring glittering pieces for the Palace of Versailles or Notre Dame Cathedral , Mathieu creates one-of-a-kind fixtures for French fashion houses like Saint Laurent (a hallway of chandeliers for its Paris Fashion Week show last February) and celebrities like Brad Pitt (an octopus-shaped chandelier for the actor’s Château Miraval winery).

Until recently, only industry insiders knew that Mathieu also maintains galleries in New York City and Paris and operates a museum in Gargas, in his native Provence . But that museum has quietly built a reputation as a must-visit — it holds a private collection of more than 1,000 chandeliers dating back as far as the Middle Ages.

Housed in a former factory that made ocher (a natural clay pigment), the museum, which is free to the public, showcases treasures like an 1878 Baccarat crystal confection. The lights, which are solar-powered, are always on: visitors are encouraged to view them at night, when a soft, luminous glow shines through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

In 2022, the museum unveiled a third exhibition space dedicated to the company’s contemporary chandeliers, along with pieces by other designers, including Maria Grazia Rosin and Warren Mueller. In the workshop, visitors can watch artisans craft custom pieces for clients like Cartier and the nearby Coquillade Provence resort.

Also new is a 10-acre park designed around the stone basins once used to wash ocher ore brought from the neighboring village of Roussillon. Mathieu hopes the park will deepen travelers’ connection to the region, as well as attracting a younger generation: “We have to write the history of chandeliers today.”
