This is a DIY travel guide to the historic island municipality of Limasawa in Southern Leyte, Philippines.
Limasawa Island is a small island municipality in the province of Southern Leyte in Eastern Visayas. It is the place where the first Christian mass was celebrated in the Philippines on March 31, 1521. [Check out our list of top tourist spots in Southern Leyte ]
Today, Limasawa Island has become a tourist spot for both locals and foreigners not just because of its religious and historical importance but also for its natural attractions like beaches and lagoons.
Top Tourist Spots and Attractions in Limasawa Island
First mass shrine.
The First Mass Shrine in Limasawa is one of the top tourist spots in the island because of its religious and historical importance. On March 31, 1521, the first Christian mass was celebrated in the Philippine soil in Limasawa. The mass was officiated by Spanish priest Fr. Pedro de Valderrama on Easter Sunday.
A marker by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) is mounted on the wall of the shrine.
Inside the shrine are paintings that depicts what transpired during the time where Ferdinand Magellan and his crew landed in Limasawa Island.
Magellan’s Cross
Within the vicinity of the First Mass Shrine, atop a hill, is a replica of Magellan’s Cross that was planted by Magellan’s men when they arrived at the island.
In order to reach the Magellan’s cross, a visitor needs to climb 450 steps to get to the top. There are rest stops along the way so you can rest at some point during the climb. It was an easy climb for most people but unfortunately, not to me. I had to do a couple of stops before reaching the cross. The view from the hill makes the climb more worthwhile.
Dakdak Beach
If you want the beach, then Dakdak Beach is one of your best options when you visit Limasawa Island. It’s located about 10 minutes away from the docking port. It offers cream sand beach, an accommodation both airconditioned and open-air huts, as well as a small restaurant.
Limasawa Island Lagoon
Limasawa Island Lagoon is one of the must-visit tourist attractions in Limasawa Island. It’s about 30 minutes away from the town proper and it offers breathtaking views.
The entrance fee is only Php25 for adults, Php20 for senior citizens and Php10 for kids. Since the road leading to the lagoon is a private property, the land owner is collecting Php5 access fee.
Limasawa Island Lighthouse (Parola)
Just few steps away from the jump-off point to Limasawa Island Lagoon is the the Limasawa Island Lighthouse. You can have a great view of the island lagoon from the lighthouse area. Just make sure to be very careful in the cliff as there are no safety barriers.
Where to stay in Limasawa Island
Dakdak beach resort.
Dakdak Beach Resort is where I stayed overnight. I paid Php1,500 for an airconditioned room. The non-airconditioned room is Php1,000 so I opted the airconditioned room.
You may call them in advance to make a reservation at 0975-967-5063.
The room is pretty basic but spacious. The CR is shared so I feel like Php1,500 is a bit much. I think they do not have fixed pricing. I read somewhere that the non-air is only Php700 but I do not know if they actually increased the price. So, I highly recommend to call in advance and negotiate.
As for food, you do not have to worry as they have a small eatery within the resort that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Surprisingly, their food was good. Lutong-bahay feels. 🙂
By the way, I was ready to give them 6.5 out of 10 rating, but I had a bad experience just as I was about to check out. There were two foreigners who arrived around 10 AM. The staff (3 of them) were so apologetic to them because the room is not ready yet. They were trying to get the room I occupied because they were informed that it should have been the room that the foreigners will be occupying. I told them I am still there and will be checking out by 11 AM.
They were talking in Bisaya not knowing that I also speak Bisaya. They were talking behind my back that I should I have left. I told them that they can give the other room since it was vacated. Then, I asked what is the check out time and the girl said 10:00 AM because check-in time is 11:00 AM. I asked again, are you sure? She said yes, in a condescending manner. I told her, I travel a lot and I never encountered a resort/hotel in the Philippines with 10 AM check out and 11:00 AM check-in. I said, ano ‘to Japan?! Then I went to the room and pack. I left before 11AM.
I was pissed , so I give them 3/10 rating. Bad customer service. It’s as if I paid less than the foreigners.
Evashore Beach Hotel And Resort
Evashore Beach Hotel and Resort is a relatively new property in Limasawa Island. It is a walking distance from the pier. The room rates start at Php1,500. You may call them at 0917-874-1302.
Island Lagoon Resort
Island Lagoon Resort is located in Brgy. San Agustin, Limasawa Island. They offer non-airconditioned basic accommodation for less than Php1,000. You can also pitch your tent in the area. You may call them at 0956-790-3306
Trimulco Travelers Lodge
Trimulco Travelers Lodge is your best option if you travel on a budget. It is located near the pier and their room rates start at only Php500. You may call them at 0916-521-6846 or 0926-130-4887.
How to Get to Limasawa Island
The jump-off point to Limasawa Island is the town of Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte. The closest airports are in Ormoc City and Tacloban City .
From Tacloban City or Ormoc City , take a bus or van to either Sogod or Maasin City. If you decide to go to Maasin, you can take a jeep/multicab to the town of Padre Burgos and inform the driver that you are going to the port. The fare is Php30 and the travel time is around an hour.
If you are coming from Sogod, you can take a bus bound to Maasin via Malitbog. Do not ride the bus via Bato as it will not pass by Padre Burgos. Inform the driver or conductor to drop you off near the port. Travel time is around 1.5 hours and the fare is Php50.
Coming from Mindanao? Take the ferry to Liloan Port and take a bus or jeep to Sogod. The fare is Php50 and the travel time is around an hour.
When you are in Padre Burgos , proceed to the port which is just a walking distance from the main road/bus stop.
The boat (lancha) schedule is at 3:00PM going to Limasawa from Padre Burgos depending on the weather. The fare is Php70 and the travel time is less than an hour. If younarrive at the port earlier, you can take an outrigger boat (pump boat) like I did. I departed around 12:00 NN. The fare is Php100 and travel time is around 45 minutes. You can also charter a boat if you want to.
From Limasawa Island, the lancha departs at 6:00AM and 1:00 PM. On Sundays, it only departs once at 1:00 PM. Again, there are outrigger boats available.

- Both leading mobile networks have signal on the island.
- Electricity is 24/7 so no need to worry.
- Charter a habal – habal to visit the tourist attractions in Limasawa Island. I got mine for Php300 and I visited all the five tourist spots mentioned above.

Here is a pre-travel guide and important things you need to know before your trip. Best to prepare your itinerary, book tours ahead and contact local tricycle/ habal-habal driver to tour you around the island.

Where to Stay in Limasawa?
Here are a few accommodations I can suggest when in Limasawa:
- Trimulco Travelers Lodge – located near the pier and airconditioned rooms are Php400.00 each.
- Evashore Resort – room rates starts at Php1,500.00 per night good for 2 person.
- Island Lagoon Resort – one of the best option for overnight is in Island Lagoon Resort. Tent pitching is allowed and the room rate starts at Php1,000.00 for 2 person.
Important Contact in Limasawa Island
Upon arriving in the port, it was nothing like the usual ports that has lotsa habal-habal drivers outside waiting for tourists and passengers. Here in Limasawa, only limited number of drivers waiting for passengers. And in our experience, there were no habal-habal or tricycle drivers available to pick us up.
I walked around the port to look for drivers but I wasn’t lucky to see one. Then my partner asked around, good thing that there is one local kind enough to call his friend who has a tricycle. We met Kuya Joel and he toured us around the island too. We paid him Php500.00 for a tour around in Limasawa. You can reach him at 09356203348. Below are the places we visited:
First Mass Shrine
Dakdak beach, magellan’s cross.
- Limasawa Island Lagoon
- Parola /Lighthouse
Limasawa Island Marker
Tips from joan’s footprints.
- Bring enough cash, there are no ATM machines in the island.
- Make sure to bring packed meals, only a few karenderya in the island and most of it closes early before 7pm.
- Contact your guide prior the travel date: Kuya Joel at 09356203348
- Signal reception is good for bothe Smart and Globe users.
Places to Visit
Limasawa is a very small island. You can visit all attraction for a day tour or in less than 5 hours. But if you’re not in a hurry, I suggest to do a 2 days 1 night here so you can enjoy the beach and lagoon.
FYI, Southern Leyte was one of the places damaged by Typhoon Odette. As we toured around the island, the damage it caused to the homes of the locals, the beaches and the lagoons is still there.
On March 31, 1521, the first Christian Mass in the Philippines was held in Limasawa Island. This is why the Mass Shrine is one of the top tourist attraction in Limasawa.
The white beach of Dakdak will surely amaze you as how the pier in Limasawa amazed me too. As soon as I arrived in Limasawa, I noticed the beautiful beach in the pier. From there I knew and expected that the beaches in the island will stun me. And so it did!
Notice the beautiful beach from an aerial shot! It is just so magical even if the destruction caused by Typhoon Odette can be seen from above.
To reach the Magellan’s Cross, there’s about 450 steps up to the hill. Jump-off point starts from the First Mass Shrine. As you reach Magellan’s Cross you will see a wide view of the island from above.
Limasawa Island Lagoon & Lighthouse
The Island Lagoon is the place to be for adventure. Here you can swim around the lagoon area and do cliff-jumping. There is an entrance fee of Php35.00 per person upon arriving at the resort. Before entering the Island Lagoon Resort, the lighthouse is just a few walks away.

Limasawa Island
Top choice in Leyte
Tranquil Limasawa Island, a place of historical and religious significance, is well worth a visit. The island has around 6000 inhabitants and five tiny villages. This is where the Spanish first celebrated Mass on 31 March 1521, thereby starting the Christianisation of the country.
A five-minute walk to the left from the pier leads to the original Mass site . Next to it, a set of 450 steps leads up to the commemorative Magellan's cross . From here you can gaze at gorgeous views out across the ocean to Mindanao, Bohol and mainland Leyte. The island also has beautiful small coves that are ideal for swimming and snorkelling, and a few guesthouses.
Between Monday and Saturday four big bangkas make the journey to and from Burgos (P50, 45 minutes); the last trip from Burgos is at 3pm, while the last trip off the island is at 12.30pm. On Sundays there's only one boat, leaving Limasawa at 12.30pm and returning from Burgos at 3pm. Chartering a bangka will cost around P1500 return.

Limasawa, Southern Leyte: A Travel Guide to the Historic Island
The mere mention of Limasawa – the island municipality at the mouth of Sogod Bay – instantly calls to one’s mind, especially among Filipinos, the Magellan-Elcano expedition . The rugged 698-hectare island is the site of the first documented Roman Catholic mass in the Philippines and the Far East . After snorkeling with whale sharks and scuba diving around Sogod Bay , I excitedly decided to hop on over to this slender-shaped island. According to legend, the island takes its name from the five wives (“limang asawa”) of Rajah Kolambu , the ruler of the island when Magellan and his men arrived in 1521.
Magellanic Sites
The most important heritage sites on the island are at Barangay Magallanes on the east coast. The National Shrine of the First Mass in the Philippines (free admission, open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm) is a mausoleum-looking structure built to commemorate the historic event. Inside, a life-size tableau of the planting of the First Cross can be found, surrounded by historical paintings. The first documented Roman Catholic mass in the country was celebrated by Fr. Pedro de Valderrama, the chaplain of the Spanish fleet led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan on March 31, 1521, an Easter Sunday.
From the park fronting the shrine, a series of 450 concrete steps leads up to the First Cross Monument , a six-meter-tall commemorative replica of the cross planted by Magellan’s expedition on a hill on the island.
In 2021, a Quincentennial Marker for Limasawa was erected in Barangay Calubihan, south of Barangay Triana. This marker belongs to a series of 34 monuments installed across the southern Philippines, tracing the Philippine leg of the first circumnavigation of the globe by the Magellan-Elcano expedition (1519-1522).
Beaches & Rock Resorts
Aside from historic sights, Limasawa is also blessed with rugged natural beauty. The best white-sand beaches are on the east coast with Dakdak Beach Resort (entrance fee: ₱30, Tel. +63 9155202660, +63 9367196004 or +63 9158482835) in Barangay Lugsongan having the longest beach line. Amy Beach Resort (, on the southern end of Barangay Magallanes, also has a nice white-sand beach, a small swimming pool, and A-frame huts with private toilet and shower (₱1,200, good for two persons) while farther south is the new South Parola Beach Resort (entrance fee: ₱30), a cliffside property next to the modern lighthouse on the south end of the island (no overnight accommodation available yet).
On the north end of Limasawa is the picturesque Island Lagoon Resort (entrance: ₱35, Tel. +63 9567903306), a remote cliffside resort which features rock formations surrounding a swimming area, accessed by 84 steep concrete steps. The resort is located near the North Lighthouse standing next to limestone cliffs. Accommodation starts at ₱1000 for a double fan room with shared toilet and shower.
There’s also great diving around Limasawa Island, especially off the northeast coast! The most popular dive sites are Gunther’s Wall and Adrian’s Cove , which feature coral-rich walls. Unfortunately, there is no dive center on the island, and the sites are accessed via boat drives from resorts based on the Leyte mainland. For more information on scuba diving in Limasawa, read my blog about scuba diving in Sogod Bay .
How to Get There
Padre Burgos is the jump-off point to Limasawa Island. Southern Leyte. M/V Asuncion (Tel. +63 9750150359) is a large outrigger ferry that plies between Limasawa and Padre Burgos. The boat departs Padre Burgos Pier at 11 am daily (except Sundays), and departs Limasawa for Padre Burgos at 6:00 am everyday. Travel time is at least 1 hour, depending on sea conditions. Fare is ₱100, exclusive of environmental fee (₱60). If you miss the lantsa (big ferry), there are small bangkas (outrigger boats) that ply the same route (₱150 to 250 per person, depending on number of passengers and sea condition).
Padre Burgos is a three-hour drive from Tacloban Airport, which serves regular flights from Manila and Cebu. Alternatively, from Cebu City, you can take a ro-ro ferry or fastcraft to any of the ports along the southwestern coast of Leyte island (ie. from north to south, Ormoc, Baybay, Hilongos, Bato or Maasin), then travel southwards by bus or van to Padre Burgos. (Tip: Cebu-Ormoc route has fastcraft options, while Hilongos has daily ro-ro ferry trips).
I took a Roble Shipping ferry (₱680 for tourist class, 6-7 hours), which departed Cebu City at 9pm and arrived at Hilongos Port at 4am. While onboard, one can purchase bus transfer tickets to other places on Leyte island. I bought a bus ticket for Maasin City Terminal (₱150, 1 hour), where I transferred to a Sogod-bound van (₱100, 45 minutes), which dropped me off at Padre Burgos.
Check out the Facebook pages of the ferry companies for the latest schedule:
- Roble Shipping (Cebu-Hilongos) – Ro-ro ferry, 6 hours
- KHO Shipping Lines (Cebu-Maasin)* – Ro-ro ferry, 6 hours
- OceanJet & SuperCat (Cebu-Ormoc) – Fastcraft, 3 hours
*Unreliable schedule
Where to Stay
The most convenient place to stay is Evashore Beach Resort (Tel. +63 9195355694), a budget beach hotel located just a short walk away from the pier (which is ideal since the ferry returning to Padre Burgos leaves at 6:00 am). Accommodation rates start at ₱1,000 for an air-conditioned double room with shared toilet and shower.
Where to Eat
There are only a few carinderias (eateries) around Triana, the main village on the west coast of the island. The largest and most popular restaurant is Pinkapple & Natalie’s Restaurant , a seaside establishment that serves an assortment of food and drinks. They also offer baked goods and sundries at the adjacent sari-sari store.
Getting Around
The most practical way to get around the island is to hire a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) or rent your own scooter. The Municipal Tourism Office lent me a semi-automatic motorcycle but there are a few scooters for rent. Ask your resort or accommodation.

Limasawa Island: A Place of the First Mass in the Philippines
Limawasa, an island municipality in southern leyte, is a small yet flourishing town being the site of the first christian mass in the country and in asia. the first cross and the first mass shrine are some of the frequently visited spots that give tourists a rare experience of retracing the historic footsteps of the portuguese explorer ferdinand magellan in 1521 who paved the way for the beginning of christianity in the country..
“Mazaua” is the original name of this municipality. There are two assumptions how the municipality got its name:
Limasawa was created into an independent municipality on June 11, 1978 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 1549. But this was not implemented due to some problems. Limasawa officially became a municipality on August 27, 1989 after the conduct of a plebiscite among the populace to ratify its independence.

Discovering a Beautiful Backpacker’s Destination Known as Limasawa Island
With the many tourist destinations Philippines has to offer, there is not much written about a backpacker’s haven, Limasawa Island, located in Eastern Visayas. Considered to be the smallest municipality in the province, there is much to experience in this beautiful part of Southern Leyte.
Situated at the tip of the Leyte mainland, it is known to be the historic site where the first Christian Mass in Asia took place in 1521. It is said to be the place where Magellan and his fleet docked and made friends with then Rajah Siaiu and his brother, Rajah Kulambu of Butuan.
The instant camaraderie led them to make a blood compact, a ritual popular among indigenous tribes and performed to seal friendships. And although there have been an ongoing debate on the authenticity of the story, with some claiming the first Mass was held either in Masao, Butuan or Bolinao, Pangasinan, centuries before the Portuguese explorer discovered the Philippine archipelago, Limasawa remains to be must-see for travelers looking for a new and awesome laidback experience.
What to See
Pilgrimage Site of the First Mass
For religious and non-religious travelers alike, this is a perfect destination for meditation as well as some peace and quiet, away from the noise of city living. Located in Barangay Magallanes, on the foot of a hill, this shrine was built to commemorate the first Christian Mass held on March 31, 1521. Inside the site are paintings and sculptures depicting the events that took place that significant day. An added attraction or perhaps, treat is the wishing well just outside the shrine for those who want to make their wishes come true.
Magellan’s Cross
After a visit to the shrine, a 450-step climb to the hill leads you to the First Cross.
