Lithuania Schengen visa cost

The cost of obtaining a Lithuania Schengen visa includes the following:

  • expenses for document preparation, such as photo cost; cost of document translation, if this is needed; a notary fee for consent of the parental authority or legal guardian for minors travelling alone or with one parent;
  • medical insurance cost — expenses depend on the chosen insurance company;
  • visa fee — €80, €40, €35, or none, depending on the country and category of an applicant;
  • service fee if applying to a visa centre — €15.90 if there is a Lithuanian visa authority in the country, and €30 if there is none.

Visa and service fees are not refundable even if the application has been rejected.

Some categories of foreigners are free of visa fees. Among them are:

  • children under six years;
  • students, postgraduates, and accompanying teachers who are travelling for study or educational training;
  • researchers travelling to carry out scientific research or participate in a scientific seminar or conference;
  • representatives of non-profit organisations over 25 participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organised by non-profit organisations.

Applications for a Lithuania Schengen visa are submitted no more than 6 months prior to the intended visit. Seafarers performing their duties are allowed to apply earlier but no more than 9 months before their trip to Lithuania.

Define the primary purpose of your visit and find out what documents to prepare and what visa type to apply for.

lithuania tourist visa requirements

A Lithuanian visa authority reviews your application and makes a decision. Usually, this process takes about 15 calendar days, but this period can be extended for up to a maximum of 45 days in cases when further scrutiny of the application is needed.

After the decision on your application is made, you can pick up your documents. If you are refused, you will receive your passport and a standard refusal form stating the reasons for the decision.

lithuania tourist visa requirements

Although the Lithuania visa rejection rate has been low over the years, a chance of getting a refusal still exists. If your application has been rejected and you believe that this might be caused by misunderstanding or incorrect information, you can appeal the decision.

An appeal should be written in Lithuanian and sent to the Vilnius Regional Administrative Court within 14 days from the date you received the decision. All the documents submitted together with the appeal should have a notarised translation into Lithuanian. You will also have to pay a stamp duty of €30 or €22.5 if you submit the appeal electronically.

If your appeal was rejected or you choose not to appeal, you can apply for a visa once again. To reduce the risk of rejection, make sure to check that your application is correct:

  • you have not stayed on the Schengen Area territory for 90 days during the current 180-day period;
  • you provided a valid travel document that corresponds to the Consulate’s requirements and has no signs of damage;
  • you provided sufficient justifications for the purpose and conditions of the intended stay;
  • you provided proof of sufficient means of subsistence and of your intention to leave the Schengen Area before the expiry of the visa you applied for;
  • all the documents you provided are authentic and trustworthy.

To travel visa-free to Lithuania and the rest of Europe, a person can obtain a residence permit in one of the EU countries. One of the options available to non-EU citizens is to get a residence permit by investment .

Some of the EU countries offering a residence permit by investment, or a so-called “golden visa”, are Greece, Spain, and Portugal.

Under the Greece Golden Visa program, foreigners are granted a residence permit for investment of at least €250,000. Investment options include purchasing real estate, 10-year renting of a hotel in a tourist resort complex, purchasing a land plot for construction or farming, opening a deposit in a Greek bank, and purchasing shares and corporate or government bonds.

To get a Portugal residence permit, an applicant has to invest €250,000 or more and choose one of the five options: purchasing investment fund units, supporting arts or research activities, setting up a company, or investing in a business.

A Spain residence permit is granted for investment of at least €500,000 in real estate, shares of Spanish companies, investment fund units, or government bonds, or for opening a deposit in a Spanish bank.

  • To enter Lithuania, citizens of countries that do not have a visa-free regime with the Schengen Area must obtain a Schengen visa.

  • Applications are usually reviewed within 15 calendar days. In exceptional cases, when further scrutiny of the application is needed, this period can be extended for up to a maximum of 45 days.

Overview of lithuania.

Lithuania is a northern European country extending westward into the Baltic Sea. The southernmost Baltic state, it is located below Latvia, to the west of Russia and Belarus, and to the north of Poland. Its population of 2.7 million speaks Lithuanian. Historically part of the Russian Empire, Lithuania briefly became an independent state, but was subsequently absorbed into the Soviet Union post-WWII. After five decades behind the iron curtain, Lithuania became the first Baltic country to achieve its independence from the USSR, in 1990. The most ethnically and linguistically homogenous Baltic state, Lithuania today boasts a highly developed economy and high standards of living. Across Vilnius, its capital, Soviet-era buildings compete with Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural gems which define the city’s 13 th -century center; a UNESCO Heritage Site. Perhaps the least overtly touristy of the Baltic capitals, Vilnius’ authenticity derives from its successful integration of its historic and modern elements. Visitors can stroll along Pilies street and visit Vilnius Cathedral (the city’s oldest street and church, respectively), and explore the capital’s living history in its Glass Quarter. Visit Uzipis, the city’s artistic Bohemian district, and learn about the German and Soviet occupation in its sobering yet informative museums. Explore Lithuanian cuisine through restaurants dedicated to using local ingredients and breathing new life into traditional dishes like Cepelinai, potato dumplings filled with cheese, paired with rye bread; a Lithuanian staple. Outside the capital, historic castles, churches and stately homes dominate the fields and forests of the countryside. lithuania tourist visa requirements

  • Passports, travel and living abroad
  • Travel abroad
  • Foreign travel advice

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Lithuania set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Lithuania.

Passport validity requirements

To travel to Lithuania, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements.

To enter Lithuania (and all Schengen countries) your passport must:

  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive. Passports are now valid for only 10 years, but for passports issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added if you renewed a passport early
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave

Contact the Embassy of Lithuania in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document, or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Checks at border control

Make sure you get your passport stamped

If you’re a visitor, your passport must be stamped when you enter or leave the Schengen area (which includes Lithuania). Border guards will use passport stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for stays in the Schengen area. If your passport was not stamped, border guards will presume you have overstayed the visa-free limit.

If your passport was not stamped, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

Read about passport stamping if you live in Lithuania .

At border control, you may also need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
  • show proof of your travel insurance
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation

Visa requirements

You can travel to countries in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

If you are travelling to Lithuania and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

Apply for a visa

To stay longer (for example, to work, study or for business) you must meet the Lithuanian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Embassy of Lithuania in the UK .

If you stay in Lithuania with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

You can apply online at Lithuania’s Migration Department .

Arrivals from Belarus, Ukraine or Russia, including the Kaliningrad Oblast

If you have arrived in Lithuania from Belarus, Ukraine or Russia (including the Kaliningrad Oblast) and need help, call +370 5246 2900 and select the option for “calling about an emergency involving a British national.” You can also send an enquiry via the web contact form.

British nationals can travel to Lithuania from Belarus, Russia or Ukraine by car or bus.

For more information, please see our Russia Travel Advice .

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro ’s Lithuania guide.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Lithuania . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food and drink into Lithuania

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food. Check the rules about taking food and drink into the EU on the European Commission website.

Restrictions on Russian vehicles

There are restrictions on vehicles with Russian licence plates in Lithuania. See Lithuania’s Customs Department for more information .

Take normal security precautions in Lithuania

The crime rate is low but violent crime, including mugging, does occur.

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occasionally occurs, particularly on public transport and in bars and night clubs.

Car theft and theft from cars also does occur.

Single individuals that might look like they are in possession of money or valuable belongings, may be targeted in less populated areas after dark.  Individuals have also been harassed for reasons of race or foreign-looking appearance.

  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
  • At night, avoid walking alone in parks, poorly lit areas, parking lots and side streets and alleys.
  • Never leave personal belongings unattended in a vehicle
  • Use secure parking facilities, especially overnight

There is a threat of terrorism in Europe. Terrorist attacks have occurred in a number of European cities. There is a potential for other violent incidents.

Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Credit card and ATM fraud is a concern, particularly in areas frequented by tourists. Strangers may invite you to visit local bars. This is often a ploy to overcharge customers for drinks. Discussions about overcharging may lead to threats of violence and security guards may force you to pay.

Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:

  • pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
  • use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Overseas fraud

Demonstrations

Demonstrations take place from time to time. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Spiked food and drinks

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

This is of particular concern at bus and railway stations, but you should remain cautious in night clubs, too

Road safety

Roads are generally in good condition but lanes are not always clearly marked.

Travelling at night in rural areas can be hazardous due to slow-moving horse-drawn carts, bicycles and vehicles travelling without taillights or reflectors on poorly lit streets and highways.

Driving conditions may be hazardous during winter. Drivers can be aggressive.

Public transportation

Rail service is efficient and reliable. Most trains are new and comfortable. Make sure that your personal belongings are secure at all times, especially when travelling on overnight international trains.

Bus service throughout the country is safe and reliable. Frequent bus and air services link Lithuania to neighbouring countries.

Taxis are inexpensive. Use only officially marked taxis from taxi stands or reputable hotels.

To avoid being overcharged, negotiate the price in advance and ensure that the taxi driver is using the meter. Always ask for a receipt.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

Belarus border closures

Starting in February 2023, Lithuanian authorities shut down certain border crossings with Belarus due to security concerns.

If you plan to cross the Lithuania-Belarus border, the following crossings remain open:

  • Medininkai/Kamienny
  • Šalčininkai/Beniakoni

Travelling by land into Belarus is increasingly difficult. More closures or changes to restrictions could happen with little or no warning.

If you are near the border or travelling through a border crossing:

  • be aware of your surroundings
  • avoid large crowds and gatherings
  • follow the instructions of local authorities

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

We have obtained the information on this page from the Lithuanian authorities. It can, however, change at any time.

Verify this information with the  Foreign Representatives in Canada .

  • Schengen area

Lithuania is a Schengen area country. Canadian citizens do not need a visa for travel to countries within the Schengen area. However, visa-free travel only applies to stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Stays are cumulative and include visits to any Schengen area country.

If you plan to stay in the Schengen area for a longer period of time, you will need a visa. You must contact the high commission or embassy of the country or countries you are travelling to and obtain the appropriate visa(s) prior to travel.

Vehicles with Russian license plates

Since September 2023, Lithuania has enforced an entry ban on vehicles registered in Russia with nine or fewer seats. This restriction is currently in place at the border and reflects existing European Union sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Vehicles registered in Russia carrying Russian license plates will be refused entry into Lithuania. An exception applies to vehicles transiting to or from the Russian territory of Kaliningrad driven by the vehicle owner. Transit through Lithuania must be done within 24 hours.

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is not required to enter this country.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.

* It is important to note that country entry requirements may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a risk in some areas of this destination. It is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It is spread to humans by the bite of infected ticks or occasionally when unpasteurized milk products are consumed.

Travellers to areas where TBE is found may be at higher risk  during April to November, and the risk is highest for people who hike or camp in forested areas.

Protect yourself from tick bites . The vaccine is not available in Canada. It may be available in the destination you are travelling to.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

Good health care is only available in major cities. Quality of care varies greatly throughout the country.

You may be at risk in remote, rural areas if you have existing health problems.

Doctors and hospitals usually expect immediate payment for health services.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad .

Transfer to a Canadian prison

Canada and Lithuania are signatories to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. This enables a Canadian imprisoned in Lithuania to request a transfer to a Canadian prison to complete a sentence. The transfer requires the agreement of both Canadian and Lithuania authorities.

This process can take a long time, and there is no guarantee that the transfer will be approved by either or both sides.

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences or heavy fines.

Drugs, alcohol and travel

2SLGBTQI+ travellers

Lithuanian law does not prohibit sexual acts between individuals of the same sex.

However, homosexuality is not widely accepted in Lithuanian society.

Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Lithuania.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Lithuania, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Lithuanian court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Lithuania to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

Export of religious items and antiquities

Strict regulations are in place on exporting religious items or antiquities. If you purchase or acquire any such item while in Lithuania, confirm with local authorities if you may export such items with you before attempting to leave.

You can drive in Lithuania with your valid Canadian driver’s licence for 90 days.

However, you should carry an international driving permit.

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.04 percent for experienced drivers and 0.00 percent for new drivers, motorcyclists, taxi drivers and truck drivers. Penalties for drinking and driving are severe. If a police officer suspects you of drinking and driving, they could confiscate your driver's licence and your vehicle on the spot. If you’re convicted, you can expect heavy fines or jail sentences.

The police are not required to respond to minor road accidents where there are no injuries to persons and both parties agree that police presence is not needed. In case of disagreement, do not move the vehicle(s) until the police arrive.

Car insurance is mandatory. Border officials may request that you show them original documents.

New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”
