Why should I choose South Africa for a luxury trip?

“South Africa has many private reserves and concession lodges that cater specifically to the luxury market. All the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) are present in good numbers in the major private reserves. On luxury safaris, game drives and walks are generally guided by knowledgeable and experienced guides and trackers. A bonus of most private reserves and concession lodges is that night drives are permitted, as is a certain amount of off-road driving. This enhances the likelihood of close encounters with lions, leopards and other carnivores. As a bonus, South Africa has a very organized and efficient tourist infrastructure by African standards. This, combined with a luxury safari, makes it a reliable holiday choice for nervous first-time visitors to the continent.”

What is included in a South Africa luxury safari?

“A South Africa luxury safari usually operates on an all-inclusive basis. This covers four- or five-star accommodation, all meals, and expertly guided activities such as game drives in open 4x4s. Some top-end lodges also include laundry and drinks in their prices. Booked directly through the lodge, prices are unlikely to include transportation there and back. However, any package price quoted by a tour operator should include road or air transfers from the specified starting point. Tips are not included in either case, and these can add up.”

What parks do you recommend for a South African luxury safari?

“There are plenty of choices. In my opinion, the first choice for general wildlife viewing and Big Five sightings is a cluster of private reserves on the western border of Kruger National Park. These reserves are collectively managed and marketed as Sabi Sands. The only drawback to Sabi Sands is that some (not all) properties share traversing rights with several neighbors. The strict rules limiting vehicle numbers often result in a long wait to join a sighting or being hurried off to make space for another lodge’s clients. A better option, from this point of view, is Timbavati Nature Reserve, which borders Kruger, and has a scattering of exclusive concession lodges. A trip to Greater Kruger carries a low but genuine risk of contracting malaria, in particular during the hotter, wetter months of November to April. Many safari-goers, particularly those with young children, prefer to head to malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve for this reason. Madikwe boasts some superb luxury lodges and fine Big Five wildlife viewing. Convenient for those whose South African holiday includes the Western and Eastern Cape is a cluster of malaria-free private reserves situated in Addo Elephant National Park, inland of Port Elizabeth. The pick of the private reserves in KwaZulu-Natal is Phinda. It offers great Big Five viewing and is also maybe the most reliable place in South Africa to spot cheetah.”

Can you describe a typical day on a South Africa luxury trip?

“Most lodges set in private reserves or concessions are exempt from the restrictions on driving between sunset and sunrise enforced in most national parks and public reserves. This has an impact on a typical day, allowing for a schedule that makes the most of the wildlife-viewing hours when predators are active. A typical day starts with a pre-dawn wake-up call and a pot of tea or coffee, before heading out on an early morning game drive. Return to the lodge mid-morning for brunch or late breakfast. Then plan on a long and relaxed lunch break, especially during the southern hemisphere summer when days are longer and temperatures higher. Following a nap or swim and a light afternoon tea, you head out on an evening game drive. This usually incorporates a sundowner drink and a night drive, where the tracker will use a spotlight to pick out wildlife ranging from chameleons and nightjars to genets and bush babies. After this, it’s back to the lodge for a three-course bush dinner and a drink around the campfire. Some lodges offer guided game walks to see birds and smaller wildlife, either first thing in the morning or – more commonly – after breakfast. These provide a welcome change of pace for those people spending more than two days on safari. Ideally, a game walk is undertaken in the morning cool rather than the heat of the afternoon.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“Your South Africa luxury safari will almost certainly be based at exclusive small lodges offering the safari equivalent variation of a three- to five-star city hotel. Most of these lodges are designed to make the most of their African bush surroundings and are constructed from a combination of stone, canvas, wood and thatch. Some pricier lodges offer even more ambitious designs and facilities. Wherever you stay, accommodation will likely be spacious, comfortable freestanding units with en suite showers and private verandahs. Many lodges also have swimming pools, spas and/or quality gift shops. World-class cuisine is usually complemented by carefully selected Cape wines. The service is top-notch. The upmarket lodges in South Africa’s numerous private wildlife reserves are scattered all around the country. The most important and best of them are clustered in three areas: along the western border of Kruger National Park, in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal close to iSimangaliso and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, and in the Eastern Cape in the vicinity of Addo Elephant National Park. In addition to the private reserves, similarly exclusive lodges can be found in various concessions set within public reserves such as Kruger National Park and Madikwe Game Reserve.”

How much will this safari cost?

“The price of the safari leg of a South Africa luxury tour depends on which part of the country you choose and how much luxury you want to experience. You’d be lucky to pick up an all-inclusive luxury safari package for less than US$250 to US$300 per day per person sharing. At the absolute top end of the range you might be looking at an all-inclusive daily price of US$700 to US$1,000 per person. Safaris in Sabi Sands and Phinda are more costly, while the concession lodges in Kruger and Madikwe are somewhat cheaper. Most lodges offer discounted low-season rates and special one-off packages during the southern hemisphere winter (May to September). This is the best time of year for Big Five sightings in most parts of the country.”

We absolutely recommend a Big 5 safari in Kruger National Park . We know all the most luxurious places to stay in private game reserves, such as Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, for the most exclusive experience. 

There are also many other safari destinations throughout the country, including malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West province and private game reserves like Kwandwe in the Eastern Cape. Furthermore, Tswalu Kalahari Reserve 's unique red Kalahari landscape is home to rare species such as the pangolin and aardvark for a different kind of safari. 

However, as incredible as a safari is, you should not miss out on experiencing Cape Town ! The country's oldest city offers everything from blue flag beaches, hiking in the mountains, fine dining, wine, culture, art, and more. And the nearby Cape Winelands offer even more wines and gourmet food to indulge in! If you visit during winter and spring, the whales are in town, so don't forget to visit the Whale Route!  

When is the best time to plan a safari tour in South Africa?

The good news is that South Africa is a year-round destination . Every season has highlights that make it special, so our rainbow nation really isn't a been-there-done-that destination. You'll want to return again and again to experience it at different times of the year. 

With a Mediterranean climate, the weather is relatively moderate. Summer is generally warm, with temperatures between 19°C and 29°C (66.2-84.2°F), whereas winter ranges from 6°C to 23°C (42.8-73.4°F). 

When it comes to a luxury South African safari, the dry winter months (from May to October) are ideal for spotting wildlife due to the sparse bush making them easier to see and the limited water sources causing them to gather around the same areas. However, when you visit during the wet summer (from November to April), the bush is green and teeming with birds and newborn wildlife! 

The best seasons in Cape Town are spring, summer and autumn. You'll want to visit during spring to see the southern right whales off the Whale Coast or the flowers along the West Coast. Summer in Cape Town is a busy time, so if you want to skip the crowds, visit in the shoulder seasons. KwaZulu-Natal can get quite hot and humid in summer, so you might want to visit in winter.

Riaan Viljoen General Manager

Riaan is a graduate of the University of Pretoria's School for Economic and Business Sciences. He founded African Sky Safaris & Tours in 1998 and has been privileged to meet people from all corners of the world who enjoyed a holiday hosted by African Sky. His commitment is to ensure a quality experience when dealing with African Sky, from initial contact (Normally via the Website) to the last day of your southern African Vacation.

Andrew Harvey Sales Manager

Andrew spent around ten years as a tour and safari guide before taking an office position, first as a sales consultant and then as the Sales Manager of African Sky Safaris & Tours. Andrew has extensive knowledge of photographic safaris and tours in Southern Africa. He can expertly assist with all questions relating to your tour or safari. Wildlife photography is his hobby and passion.

JP Pretorius Webmaster

JP is responsible for the African Sky website and social media sites, including our official Facebook page and YouTube channel. In addition to these tasks, he works with video content relating to safaris, tours, and wildlife. He has spent much of his work life doing graphic and website design, HTML, CSS, and animation. He joined the office team at African Sky in 2012 as the Webmaster.

Dean Kuhn Bookkeeper

Dean has been with African Sky from the very beginning. He is a perfectionist by nature and ensures all payments and arrangement confirmations are made and received timely. Though he operates in the background, Dean contributes significantly to our services' success.

Amanda will enrich your experience in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia. She is an exceptional hostess.

Andre Hamann

Andre is an experienced tour guide who has been leading safaris and tours for African Sky for more than twelve years. The depth of his knowledge of southern Africa is nothing short of astounding, as any client who has toured with Andre will bear testimony. He is registered as a national guide with the relevant authorities and is an expert in all areas involving travel in South Africa and Namibia.

Mary Anne Finlay

Mary-Anne's experience in the Southern African tourism industry spans a decade. She has a three-year travel and tourism management diploma and has extensively escorted tours in Southern Africa. Her experience leading tours extends to South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia. Photography is a hobby, and she loves to share her knowledge of capturing images of wildlife and birds.

Annah Ngenda

Annah is based in Victoria Falls. She holds a bachelor's degree in commerce from the Tourism and Hospitality Management department. Her experience in the industry spans more than 15 years. During this period, she has gained vast experience and insight, combining her passion for people and travel to make her an indefensible part of the team that focuses on Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Chobe in Botswana, and Livingstone in Zambia.

Alida de Villiers

Alida grew up on a farm in the African country of Zimbabwe. She accompanied her family on numerous safaris in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia from a very young age, fostering a love and understanding of nature. She has since turned her love for Africa into a tour guide career- a position allowing her to share her passion and knowledge of the beautiful countries in Southern Africa.

Clouds Nyoni

Clouds is one of the most energetic and resourceful tour guides leading tours in Botswana's northeastern part, the northwestern part of Zimbabwe, and the southern part of Zambia. He has over a decade of experience guiding foreign clients in these parts. Extensive knowledge of the area's wildlife, attractions, and history enables Clouds to add value to your tour or safari.

Suzette Erasmus

Suzette started part-time in the industry in 1998 and completed all the relevant courses to become a national tour guide. She has been a national guide since 2000 and is passionate about traveling. Suzette grew up in Limpopo but now resides in the Overberg region, not far from Cape Town. Suzette is an excellent hostess and knowledgeable guide who greatly adds to your enjoyment of South Africa.

Ludwig van der Westhuizen

Ludwig has been a tour guide for seven years and comes from the service industry, where he worked as an assistant manager at a hotel. Here he discovered his love for people and tourism. Our 9 day CroisiEurope tour from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls was excellent. Well organised with a program packed with interesting educational opportunities along with the varied safari drives. Accommodation was superb. Although most fellow tourists will be French speaking the guides were all English speaking enabling us to learn much about their country's culture and history. Downloading the Google English/French translator app helped greatly. Not a cheap holiday but well worth the money.

We had an amazing holiday we were always picked up on time and the staff were always helpful. Met some lovely travellers. The accommodation in Capetown was dreadful even though staff lovely. Our hotel was changed from the one we booked for and our guides agreed the Hotel cape Milner was the best and as I booked a long time ago I don’t understand why we were moved. We were only offered a small room no balcony overlooking a building site we then had to pay ourselves to upgrade. This hotel is catered for business clients the restaurant looks onto shipping crates we also realised after 3 days that we were only booked in for 4 nights not 5 but we rang rep who sorted it out . Even thouythe staff helped us out it did spoil the Capetown visit .

The group makes the trip good. The CEO was good with all the information he gave on daily basis whether it was on logistics or other tour related. The driver was very care and knew not only about driving but was able to fix problems given the long distance driving. All in all the tour pretty much covered the highlights of Namibia. We enjoyed the tour and the group and recommend it to others.

PATRICK SIEBEL Founder, Travel Designer & Private Guide

Patrick was born in Germany and moved to South Africa with his mother at the tender age of 5, where he went on his first safari in the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reseve. The Land Rover was chased by a grumpy Rhino, and in the ensuing excitement Patrick was hooked. With bi-annual trips to Europe to visit his father, Patrick became a world-traveller at a young age. So, it comes as no surprise that after completing a degree in Software Development, Patrick soon realized that coding did not give him the thrill and people interaction that he craved, so he began to look for an alternative career and got involved in the world of travel.

Patrick has been involved in the travel industry for over 28 years in both the United States and South Africa. Patrick’s previous roles include being the Sales Director at Thompsons Africa, one of South Africa’s largest inbound tour-operators, as well as 10 years at the helm of Seasons in Africa, a luxury lodge & hotel group. Patrick’s time at Seasons in Africa afforded him the opportunity to assist in expanding the company’s portfolio of properties to include Desroches Private Island in the Seychelles.

In 2013, Patrick decided to create Luxury Africa Safaris with the sole aim of offering clients an unparalleled safari experience of Southern and East Africa. In 2008 Patrick guided one of the world’s most affluent families on a two week private jet safari around Mozambique, which he describes as an amazing privilige, and one of many subsequent trips he has handled for high net worth individuals. Patrick is one of those private guides who “gets it” and will passionately share Cape Town and the safari destinations that he loves with his guests. As a father and traveler, Patrick understands the need to engage families across all age groups and has a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to making a trip “come alive”! Patrick is well traveled across Southern & East Africa and can speak to all current issues and questions you might have about life in Africa. He is also incredibly well connected, due to all his years in the travel industry as well as living locally in Cape Town, and can often make the impossible, possible. Patrick is a relentless foodie and will take great pleasure in sharing this side of Cape Town with you, its restaurants being some of the best in the world. Patrick is a qualified pilot as well, which makes him the perfect co-pilot on a private jet safari and his passion for photography will supply you with both family & wildife images, capturing and documenting the memores of a great safari! Patrick’s keen eye has led to him creating a gallery in Cape Town, exhibiting both wildlife and cultural works of top local photographers.

STORM MASON Travel Designer & Safari Guru

Born in Cape Town, with an endless desire to explore the world, Storm has become the ultimate African travel guru! With an in-depth knowledge of Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, India and Sri Lanka, her attention to detail in creating itineraries which exceeds expectations is un-paralled.

Storm met Rob (a fellow Luxury Africa Safaris key team member) while studying in Cape Town. With their combined love of the African bush; they made their way back to Rob’s family farm on the southern outskirts of the Kruger National Park. Before long, Storm found herself working for Patrick Siebel, the founder and owner of Luxury Africa Safaris. A few years later, and now husband and wife, Storm and Rob embarked on an adventure to manage Sand Rivers Camp in the untamed Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania. Here they gained valuable experience running a camp in the remote wilderness. Working with a design team on the refurbishment of Sand Rivers and the construction of Kiba Point (Sand Rivers’ satellite camp), they were soon snapped up by the owner of Chongwe River Camp in Zambia. Located on the Zambezi River, opposite the magnificent Mana Pools, in the Lower Zambezi National Park, this experience broadened their horizons even further.

Headhunted, they next found themselves managing a luxury hotel in India; The Oberoi Wildflower Hall in Shimla at the foothills of the Himalayas. A completely different experience to that of safari lodges; the 85 room 5-star deluxe Spa Retreat, exposed Rob and Storm to corporate Hotel Management. Hosting celebrities and dignitaries, Wildflower Hall exposed them to The Oberoi Group’s world-renowned standards and operating procedures. After 3 years in northern India, along with extensive travel throughout India and Sri Lanka, the draw of Africa lured Rob and Storm back to the bush.

Joining Sirai House, on the Borana Conservancy in Kenya, they had the privilege of working alongside a team of professionals handpicked to create arguably one of the most luxurious properties in East Africa. During the completion phase of Sirai, they experienced a pre-opening property where they headed the team responsible for the mammoth task of the finishing and snagging phase of the project. A truly incredible 5 years spent running a property as if it was their own.

After welcoming their gorgeous son Angus into the world and conquering a road trip through half of the African continent from Kenya to Cape Town, they decided they wanted to share their love of safari with the world! Incorporating understated luxury, with authentic wildlife and cultural experiences in some of the continent’s last remaining true wilderness areas, Storm brings together all of her skills and experience (combined with a wicked personality!) to create an unprecedented safari itinerary.

ROBERT MASON Private Guide & Travel Designer

With a solid knowledge of Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa, Rob is the epitome of an experienced safari guide. Charming and witty, he is armed with a wealth of knowledge and has built a reputation for providing an exceptional all-round safari experience.

Rob started his safari career in South Africa’s Lowveld, before embarking on an adventure with his vivacious wife Storm to manage Sand Rivers Camp in the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania. Here he gained valuable experience of the Southern Tanzania’s remote wilderness. After travelling the length and breadth of Tanzania’s untamed places, they set off to manage Chongwe River Camp in the Lower Zambezi National Park. This exposed them to some of Zambia’s top safari destinations and is also where Rob obtained his Zambian Wildlife Authority Guiding Qualification including walking, boating and canoeing.

Young and eager to see more of the world, Rob and Storm soon found themselves managing a luxury hotel in India! This allows their guests the chance to integrate with local communities, contribute towards the protection of wildlife and be part of securing a natural habitat. They hope to leave a conservation legacy that preserves a spectacular corner of Kenya.

Rob uses his years of management and guiding experience, as well as a vast knowledge of the African safari industry, to open up a world of adventure for discerning guests.

MATTHEW DU TOIT Financial Manager

Matthew is a born and bred Capetonian, with a passion for South Africa and it’s future.. After working in the financial sector to pay for his studies in finance and accounting, Matthew felt the desire to travel and to see more of African continent that he so loves. Through 2011 to 2015, Matthew partnered on several non-profit relief aid trips, getting to see some of the deeper parts of South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana and Mozambique. These trips deepened the love that Matthew has for South Africa and its cultural heritage.

In 2016, after turning down the opportunity to work abroad, Matthew decided to seek out a South African company who held similar values to himself and that’s where he met Patrick Siebel and caught onto his vision for Luxury Africa.

Matthew plays a key role in the financial aspect of Luxury Africa, helping steer the company to meet its goals and working closely with the founder in making sure that the business stays ahead of its field whilst offering clients the best experience possible. Matthew’s greatest desire is for others to fall in love with South Africa as much as he has. Hence, nothing makes him happier than to hear of what an incredible time guests are having exploring the region, on a Luxury Africa Safari.

ERNI HAESLOOP Atelier Curator & Operations

Erni was born in China and moved to South Africa with her family at the age of 9. She studied Fashion Design in both Durban and Munich and spent much of her working career in the fashion world. In the 70s 80s and early 90s, Erni lectured Creative Design at the Natal Technikon’s Fashion School, mentoring many of the people that have emerged over the years, as top South Africa fashion designers. Erni also had the priviledge of being voted one of the Top 10 Best-dressed women in South Africa.

With her keen creative eye, Erni has helped curate the Luxury Africa Atelier, helping source unique African luxury items that visitors like to purchase while in South Africa. Erni also assists with office administration, where her eye for detail helps the team.

HEINRICH RÖNTGEN Private Guide

It all began for Heinrich at a young age, when he had the privilege of going on many a safari in South Africa’s prized Sabi Sands Reserve, which sparked his wild passion for Africa and the interest to capture these memories. After obtaining B Com Law and LLB degrees from University of Johannesburg, Heinrich realised that law would not be his life career, but that he needed to follow his heart and share his love of the wild with others. He did his FGASA field-guide training and landed himself a job as a guide at the prestigious Leopard Hills lodge, in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

After a number of years as a guide, Heinrich was offered the post of Assistant GM at Leopard Hills, which honed his people management skills and exposed him to all aspects of the safari business. After 8 years Heinrich moved on to manage a lodge in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in Botswana, before joining Luxury Africa Safaris. With his wide skill set, Heinrich is a huge asset to Luxury Africa Safaris, understanding exactly what the guest requires and how to deliver that accordingly. Heinrich’s kind and respectful nature make him the ultimate safari host and guide.

As much as Heinrich loves the bush, he has also become a great wildlife photographer. This passion had Heinrich travelling through Southern Africa at every opportunity, searching for wildlife in different habitats and aiming to capture his next award-winning shot. His passion for the art of photography, inspires Heinrich’s guests to improve their own photography. His patient and kind manner combined with years of wildlife photography experience, make Heinrich the perfect photographic coach.
