Madonna announces 2023 tour that will celebrate her greatest hits

Madonna is getting ready to "express herself" all over again with her latest global tour.

On Tuesday, the music icon announced a new 35-city global tour, aptly named "Madonna: The Celebration Tour." The 64-year-old shared the news on her Instagram page and revealed that the tour would feature hits from across her four decades performing.

"Come join the party! 🎉💃🏼🎵🕺🏾🎤," she captioned the post.

The singer also teased the news in a video that paid tribute to her 1991 film "Truth or Dare." In the four-minute clip, Madonna is joined by several stars, including Amy Schumer, Jack Black, Lil Wayne and Judd Apatow, for a game of truth or dare.

Toward the end, Schumer dares Madonna to go on a tour and sing all of her best hits. It's a challenge that the icon gladly accepts.

A release posted to Madonna's website said the tour would follow her "artistic journey" and pay special homage to New York City, the place where her career began.

“I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for,” she said.

Madonna announces Celebration greatest hits world tour

Singer will celebrate four decades in music with a 35-date run beginning in Vancouver on 15 July, with one date at London’s O2 Arena on 14 October

Madonna has announced a tour celebrating her 40 years as a recording and touring artist. Dubbed the Celebration tour, the 35-date run will begin in Vancouver, Canada, on 15 July, and run through to winter, ending on 1 December at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome.

First teased in a promotional video for last year’s dance chart No 1s album Finally Enough Love, the Celebration tour was officially announced in a clip parodying Madonna’s 1991 tour film Truth or Dare. In the video, celebrities including Diplo, Jack Black, Lil Wayne and Amy Schumer play a game of truth or dare with Madonna, which culminates with Schumer “daring” Madonna to embark on a greatest hits tour. “You think people would come to that show?” Madonna asks. “The answer is – fuck yeah.”

Per a press release, the Celebration tour will showcase “Madonna’s artistic journey through four decades and pays respect to the city of New York where her career in music began.”

Supporting Madonna on all dates is drag performer Bob the Drag Queen, AKA Caldwell Tidicue. Best known for winning season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Tidicue has also released a handful of singles, starred in a production of Angels in America at the Berkeley Repertory Theater, and hosts a podcast, Sibling Rivalry, with Monét X Change.

The Celebration tour is Madonna’s 12th concert tour. The last time she went on the road was in 2019 and 2020, when she performed in intimate venues in support of her album Madame X. That run saw her play 12 shows at the 2,200-capacity London Palladium, with similarly lengthy stints in New York, Los Angeles and more.

The only UK date of the Celebration tour announced thus far is on 14 October at London’s 20,000-capacity O2 Arena. In a statement, Madonna said: “I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for.”

Live Nation, the producer of the Celebration tour, has faced criticism in recent months, with the US government currently in the midst of an antitrust investigation into the touring giant and Ticketmaster parent company over whether it has abused its power in the entertainment industry. Scrutiny intensified in November, when Taylor Swift slammed Ticketmaster over the bungled pre-sale for her own greatest hits shows, dubbed the Eras tour.

In a letter to the company, the US Senate’s antitrust committee chair Amy Klobuchar expressed “serious concern about the state of competition in the ticketing industry and its harmful impact on consumers”.

Tickets for the Celebration tour go on sale on 20 January and are available from Madonna’s website .

Madonna unveils 2023 world tour dates with wild celeb-filled 'Truth or Dare' video

NEW YORK — Madonna will "Take a Bow" with a new tour through North America and Europe starting this summer that will be a "Celebration" of the pop icon’s hits, which include 38 songs in the Billboard Hot 100.

The artist, 64, announced the tour Tuesday with a  star-studded video that nodded to her 1991 film "Truth or Dare" with a roundtable featuring Diplo, Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Bob The Drag Queen, Kate Berlant, Larry Owens, Meg Stalter, Eric Andre and Amy Schumer as the group plays a NSFW version of truth or dare.

"Madonna, I dare you to do a world tour and play your greatest (expletive) hits," Schumer challenges.

"Four decades? As in 40 years? As in all those songs?" Madonna replies. "That's a lot of songs. You think people would come to that show?"

The room's consensus is yes.

"OK, so the answer is: (expletive) yeah," Madonna says as the rest of the celebrities erupt into cheers, shouting "Madonna world tour!"

Evan Rachel Wood on her Madonna transformation: She 'is the most confident person on Earth'

When is the Madonna: The Celebration Tour?

The 35-city Live Nation-backed Madonna: The Celebration Tour will kick off July 15 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, with stops in Detroit, Chicago, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Denver, Atlanta and Boston, among others. That leg ends on Oct. 7 in Las Vegas.

Then the Material Girl hits Europe, where she has 11 dates throughout the fall, including London, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Milan and Stockholm, among others. The tour will wrap in Amsterdam on Dec. 1.

Tickets go on sale starting Friday, Jan. 20.

Review: Madonna's 'Madame X' concert film is compelling and confounding

What music is Madonna performing during her tour?

The singer will "be highlighting her unmatched catalog of music from the past 40-plus years," according to the announcement. It will also "pay respect to the city of New York, where her career in music began."

"I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for," Madonna says in the announcement.

Some of Madonna’s Hot 100 hits include "Vogue," "Music," "Crazy For You," "Like a Virgin," "Like a Prayer," "Justify My Love," "Live to Tell" and "Papa Don’t Preach."

Madonna covers Vanity Fair 'Icons Issue'

Vanity Fair Italy, France and Spain teamed up for a joint " Icons Issue " featuring Madonna on the cover in honor of her Celebration Tour. When asked about how much her provocative and highly criticized career has cost her, the pop star said she "could answer several billion" dollars , but "the thing it’s cost me the most is loss of sleep and maybe less time spent with people I love – also peace of mind. But I feel that it is a necessary part of the journey I am on and it’s a price I have accepted."

Madonna has pushed boundaries throughout her career, but it's simply reflective of her environment. Vanity Fair Italy called her a pioneer of inclusivity and she seemed resistant to accepting the label. "I am not really sure what it means to say I was one of the first," she said. "The people who supported me were largely members of the LGBTQ+ community and of different ethnicities. That was my support system, so why wouldn’t I in turn support and champion them?"

Madonna discusses her relationship with religion

Madonna's persona and stage name is based on Catholic figure The Madonna or The Virgin Mary, a choice that has been met with backlash since the start of her career. Although she was raised Catholic, she told Vanity Fair that she's never taken criticism to heart. "I thought if the Catholic Church did not perceive my work as an artist as doing something good, then that was their problem and an extension of their narrow mindedness and inability to see that anything that brings people together," Madonna said.

Today, Madonna is "not subscribing to religious groups that are exclusive of others or extremist in any shape," but she does "think it’s important to have ritualistic behavior and a spiritual life."

"My relationship with religion is that I remain very involved in my own spiritual practice and I think it’s imperative for everyone to have a spiritual practice – but I am not defining that for other people," the singer added.

I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.”

During her first week of the Celebration Tour at a stop in Antwerp, Belgium, Madonna took a minute to address her recent hospitalization. “Less than four months ago, I was in a hospital and I was unconscious, and people were thinking, predicting that I might not make it,” Madonna told fans at Belgium’s Sportpaleis Arena. “So, it’s a fucking miracle that I’m here right now. My mother, God bless her, she must be watching over me — she said, ‘Girl, it’s not your time to go.'”

Madonna also recently spoke about the “near-death experience” during her Los Angeles concert in March, even addressing her doctor who was in the audience and the first words she said after getting out of her coma .

“It’s called a near-death experience, and I’m not kidding, it was pretty scary,” Madonna said. “Obviously, I didn’t know for four days because I was in an induced coma, but when I woke up, the first word I said was, ‘No.’ Anyway, that’s what my assistant tells me.”

The icon later told the audience, including this writer, at the Forum, “I’m pretty sure that God was saying to me, ‘You want to come with? You want to come with us, wanna go this way?’ And I said, ‘No!'”

“The oppression of the LGBTQ+ is not only unacceptable and inhumane; it’s creating an unsafe environment; it makes America a dangerous place for our most vulnerable citizens, especially trans women of color,” Madonna shared in a statement on Instagram. “Also, these so-called laws to protect our children are unfounded and pathetic. Anyone with half a brain knows not to fuck with a drag queen. Bob and I will see you from the stage in Nashville where we will celebrate the beauty that is the queer community.”

With dates scheduled throughout April 2024, Madonna will continue to travel all across the United States for the Celebration Tour , including stops in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Austin.

Madonna Celebration Tour Set List

Madonna’s tour features some of the legend’s most iconic songs and moments throughout her career.

“Madonna, I dare you to do a world tour and play your greatest motherfuckin’ hits,” Amy Schumer dared the singer in the tour announcement clip , which included appearances from Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Diplo, Kate Berlant, Larry Owens, Meg Stalter, Eric Andre, and Bob The Drag Queen, who will support Madonna on the road.

“Four decades … as in, 40 years” Madonna replies. “As in, all those songs?”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performs tracks from the opener “Nothing Really Matters” to “La Isla Bonita,” which she also sang with Schumer in the tour announcement clip.

At a recent stop at the Kia Forum in L.A., Madonna’s set list also included “Holiday” from her self-titled debut to the disco anthem “Hung Up” from 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor to the title track from 1998’s Ray of Light — there’s no shortage of Madonna’s greatest songs to choose from.

Madonna's Celebration Tour showcases restless reinvention machine and we love her for it

Analysis Madonna's Celebration Tour showcases restless reinvention machine and we love her for it

Madonna's Rebel Heart tour

Her face is familiar, but not the same.

She sits in a chair, legs spread in the ordinary way of the cabaret performer, but shocking when you realise it's not a lithe 20-something doing it.

She's wearing a knee brace, and plodding rather than prancing down a long runway, surrounded by dancers, in front of several thousand adoring, screaming fans. And her bra is shaped into cones.

Madonna, the original music revolutionary, the biggest selling female recording artist of all time, has started on her Celebration Tour -- her first since 2019 and the first time she's ever performed a show of all her hits from her 40 years in music.

The show has all the style and bravado and the bump-and-grind you'd expect from the self-styled sex goddess.

She's drawing adoration and worship, of course: but she's also attracted the kind of vile commentary and condemnation usually reserved for those who steal other people's organs. It's kind of breathtaking to read.

Madonna's crime? She's dancing, singing, thrusting and moaning at the age of 65.

"Repulsive. Vulgar. Pathetic. Pure denial of ageing."

After all her decades of swallowing and spitting out every other cultural taboo for a woman in music, the age barrier is her last hill to climb. And she's doing it in a crotchless corset and heels.

Madonna is majestically unapologetic

I've found all the fury incredible. Mick Jagger, 80, gets hilarious memes of his limber self being compared to the decrepit Joe Biden who shares his years; Madonna gets headlines scolding, " Madge – isn't it time you acted your age? ".

Sorry, but I don't have a single original thought here. The teeth-grinding truth of age and gender double standards is well-traversed terrain with Madonna and other older performers. Naomi Wolf got there ages ago .

But amid all the bitching and sniping, and the anguish over these double standards, I don't want us to forget or lose something that was a rapturous joy and liberation to many of my generation: just how astonishingly talented, bold, brave, beautiful and trail-blazing Madonna has always been.

We're about to bury the most unforgettable and important thing about this singular star: that she is sui generis -- nothing like her before or since.

She made possible almost everything that women recording artists enjoy today by being almost intolerably herself.

And I just love that for all that she does, and all who she pisses off or provokes and annoys – she is majestically unapologetic.

She owns her monstrousness

She's appalling sometimes: a deliberate provocateur, a restless reinvention machine, bored when she's not shocking you, unable to resist needling almost everyone. She can be nasty. I remember watching her smash documentary In Bed with Madonna, as she led her bewildered and implausible boyfriend Warren Beatty around the room. "Sit here," she simpered, "the light's good here." I'm pretty sure Beatty was out of that relationship minutes after the film premiered.

And just as she does today, and on this tour, she has no problem revealing in that film a deeply unpleasant side of herself. That movie stands today (and it's well worth a re-watch) as a rarity of candour and unapologetic revelation that you won't see in any other artist's highly managed documentary.

She owns her monstrousness.

(And a side-note: In Bed With Madonna was in it's time the highest-grossing music documentary ever, a record just now surpassed by another female musician whose independence and singularity has depended on Madonna's barrier-smashing – Taylor Swift.)

Cher was always one of Madonna's toughest critics, but there's been a lovely recent détente : Cher said she'd always admired Madonna for seeing the trends before anyone else and wondered how she did it. That's no small thing and it's easy to forget: underwear as outerwear? All shapes and sizes welcome? Gender fluidity? Women in sexual power? No pants? Queer culture? The return of disco? Madonna got there first on every one of them.

Maybe her approach to ageing is another prescient moment for her. Madonna has never sought to be considered "classy" -- wearing the expected long sleeves of a woman of a certain age as the world refuses to gaze upon an ageing woman's arms.

Just as gender is now self-defined -- also the way we make our families, define our work, live our lives -- Madonna and her knee brace and her de-aged face will get to define what ageing is for this peerless star: and if her influence is still anything like it was, she'll probably re-define it for all of us too.

This weekend, how often every day do you think about Marcus Aurelius , or Bluey , or AI ? No matter which – we have you covered.

Have a safe and happy weekend, and I'm going back to back Madonna this week … because I can. Decades after she started, she released one of the great modern dance songs of our times. Madonna is never finished. Get used to it.
