Maldives Island Hopping Tours (w/ Price & Itinerary)

Maldives Island Hopping Tours (w/ Price & Itinerary)

Where will you find more than a thousand little islands waiting to be explored, but in The Maldives! This nation sits on the Indian Ocean, and enjoys the company of coral reefs and other marine life underwater. One vacation may not be enough to see it all. However, Maldives island hopping tours can save you some time and give you a comprehensive glimpse of multiple isles, each with something unique to offer.

Among the 1,200 islands that make up The Maldives , only about 200 are inhabited by locals. The remaining are private islands which have their own world-class resorts with water villas and other luxurious accommodation. To understand the lives of Maldivians and sample their local cuisine, it is recommended to travel through public islands. Choose from a number of island hopping tours in the country for a real taste of The Maldives.

#1 South Male Local Island Hopping Tour

Full Day South Malé Local Island Hopping Trip

Full Day South Malé Local Island Hopping Trip

This full day island hopping tour in the South Male Atoll takes you to two local islands of Gulhi and Maafushi. This full day tour in The Maldives is priced at USD 225 per person for adults, and USD 113 for children between the ages of 6 and 11 years, while infants who are 5 years and under travel for free.

The South Male Local Island Hopping Tour operates from 10 AM to 4:30 PM on all days. Participants are picked up from the Hulhumale Main Jetty and are taken on a public ferry ride to Maafushi, one of the pioneers of local tourism. Stretching just 2 km in length, this tiny island has made ‘ guesthouse tourism ’ flourish in The Maldives, with its numerous hotels and guesthouses.

There are plenty of souvenir stores that sell collectibles, fridge magnets, handcrafted purses, coconut shell artefacts and other local handicrafts – useful for those who love window shopping. Maafushi is also ideal for indulging in watersport activities as there are many activity providers along the shore with their shack-style offices decorated in colourful graffiti and chalk-art.

In the afternoon, you will be ferried of to the nearby island of Gulhi , where the tour leader will introduce you to the simple lifestyle of the village. You can relish some tropical lunch at a beachside café before exploring Gulhi on foot.

Apart from strolling through the tranquil streets of this rustic island, you also get to visit the boat building yard for some insights into the construction of boats. Boat building makes up a significant share of the livelihood of the villagers. Spend some time relaxing on the beach before you are whisked back off to Hulhumale.

While in transit and floating on the Indian Ocean, you will have a chance to snorkel. Safety briefing and advisory on responsible snorkelling will be provided on board. Snorkelling masks are included in this Maldives island hopping tour price . Non-swimmers can also take help of buoyancy aids. A whole new world of colourful corals and fish can be spotted, especially with the help of the spotter who will also be your snorkelling guide!

#2 North Male Local Island Hopping Tour

Full Day North Malé Local Island Hopping Trip

Full Day North Malé Local Island Hopping Trip

North Male Atoll is a region of a rare phenomenon – freshwater lakes in the midst of a saltwater sea. On an island hopping trip across this atoll, you will have the opportunity to know about the fragile mangrove ecosystem of some of the islands and how they are essential to maintain the ecological balance of The Maldives.

The North Male Local Island Hopping Tour costs USD 175 per adult. While toddlers 5 years and under travel without any additional charges, children between the ages of 6 and 11 pay half the price, which is USD 88 per kid. The fee is inclusive of local taxes which include GST of 12% and service charge of 10%. Return transfers from Hulhumale organized in speed boats, lunch and the fee of the tour guide are priced into the charges.

Collection from hotels in Male and Hulhumale begin half an hour before the tour start time of 10 AM. The first island stop is Himmafushi which can be explored at your own pace. Shopaholics will have a chance to buy locally crafted mementos from various souvenir shops on this local island. After ambling about the white sand beaches, catch the speedboat for the next stop – Huraa.

Huraa Island is a small village in the North Male Atoll . After you have lunch at one of the local cafes recommended by us, be awed by the simple life led by the local dwellers during the orientation walk. The stroll includes a trip to a boat building yard and a sneak-peek into the process of curing fish. Dry fish is one of the popular exports of The Maldives, and there are multiple steps that are performed to cure locally caught fish to make it easy-to-export.

Huraa Island also presents a unique prospect of seeing a freshwater lake, thanks to its mangroves. Satiate your curiosity by asking all your questions related to the mangrove ecosystem to the tour guide. Mangrove swamps need protection as they are fragile but support indigenous flora and fauna.

As the day wears off, you are taken back to Hulhumale Island , but not before getting a chance to snorkel! Gear up in the complimentary-to-use snorkelling equipment and fins, and come across some exciting coral reefs, rays, turtles, sharks and a plethora of schooling fish. The rest of the speedboat ride is also exciting as the timing and route offer chances of dolphin sighting along the way.

#3 North Ari Atoll Island Hopping Tour

If you have more than a week to spare, an elaborate island hopping tour can be arranged for a more immersive travel experience through The Maldives. Both the South Male and North Male local island hopping tours can be spread out over 7 nights to give you a first-hand experience of looking into the uncomplicated lives of the locals and get some insights into their traditions and culture .

For instance, the South Male & Vaavu Atoll Maldives Discovery Cruise takes you to the islands of Guraidhoo, Fulidhoo and Gulhi. At each island, you have the freedom to snorkel, speak to the locals, and do some island-specific activities. Watch the building and renovation of traditional wooden boats ( dhonis ) on Guraidhoo Island . Learn to fish for tuna in the local pole and line method on Fulidhoo Island . Finally, enjoy a bodu beru drum performance at Gulhi Island .

The 7-Day North Male Atoll Local Island Hopping Tour introduces two interesting islands, which are Dhiffushi and Thulusdhoo . With lots of ways to watch local lives up close, mosque visits, school visits and trips to the local boat yard, travellers get a peek into the faith, culture and economic aspects of these local villages.

Along the same lines, the North Ari Atoll Island Hopping Tour , which is organized for 8 days and 7 nights , offers a delightful glimpse into the public islands of Rasdhoo, Ukulhas and Mathiveri. When you arrive at the Velana International Airport in Hulhule Island, you are transferred to the nearby public island of Hulhule, where you can rest for the night and spend some time exploring the local beach.

On day-2, you are taken to Rasdhoo Island in the North Ari Atoll. Today, you can explore this local island with your tour guide, and understand the lifestyle of the inhabiting Maldivians . Visit a mosque, interact with the village kids, and watch how the women prepare their Maldivian dinners. You can sample the local snack, hedika , a savoury and sweet treat consumed with the traditional evening black tea.

Day-3 is an exciting one, full of underwater encounters. Today, you explore the house reef of Rasdhoo and can also take snorkelling excursions to nearby reefs. Later in the day, go on a sunset kayaking tour to a sandbank closeby , from where to watch the sun go down completely.

The next day, day-4, takes you to another local island in the North Ari Atoll – Ukulhas. Colloquially known as the fishing village, Ukulhas Island has been the harbinger of environmentally conscious practices in fishing. Spend a couple of days here, discovering more about the island through the help of the island hopping guide and also interactions with the friendly locals. Make the most of the gorgeous beaches and coral reefs that call Ukulhas their home.

On day-6, you hop on to your final local island destination – Mathiveri. This pretty little public island is perfect for exploration on foot. Learn about its cultural ethos from the guide, and later, enjoy a dolphin cruise in the sunset . The next day will give you ample time to enjoy the house reef on a guided snorkelling trip. The elusive manta rays can be spotted here. You can also take a trip to the nearby uninhabited island – Mathiveri Finolhu . Day-8 is when you get on your final ferry to Male for your return flight back home.

Apart from the island hopping tours elaborated above, many bespoke tours are operated in The Maldives, catering to different tastes and travel requirements. Choose from a variety of day tours , simple guesthouses to hotels to liveaboards in The Maldives .

Maldives Travel Guide

Travelers' pro tips or experiencing maldives.

maldives island tour

Snorkeling! Personally, I would never go to a resort without a house reef as I would be missing out on what is the best thing about the Maldives — the underwater world! The amount and variety of fish are incredible, and for first-timers being able to swim with sharks and turtles is such an amazing experience (in fact it never gets less amazing!).

maldives island tour

darrylpaula

Our biggest priority when choosing an island is the accessibility and quality of the house reef/snorkeling. Another must-do is watching the sunrise and sunset.

maldives island tour

Placitasgirl

The underwater world is, of course, my number one, but watching dolphins play at sunrise is probably my number two.

maldives island tour

For us, the Maldives is all about snorkeling. Yes, it's stunningly beautiful and totally idyllic, but what makes it utterly unique is the underwater world that is SO accessible and varied.

maldives island tour

Swimming with the fishes (sorry, couldn't resist) in the Maldives is a life-changing experience, so far removed from most people's day-to-day life that it has the power to change your whole perspective. For many of us, there is no going back — a holiday that isn't shared with a shark or ten is just not worth the bother.

maldives island tour

Have to say it's the diving for me, amazing corals and fish, and if you time, the months you travel and location the opportunity to dive with Manta, whale sharks or 200+ sharks at the mouth of a channel is amazing. With Fuvahmulah, the addition of tiger sharks, oceanic manta, hammerheads, and threshers makes this a one-of-a-kind location for diving. Throw in the remoteness, and on a clear night, unbelievable skies, it's a paradise hard to replicate.

What is the best way to get there?

Velana International Airport (VIA) is the only international airport in the Maldives. It offers several flights to/from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. From its location on Hulhule Island near the capital island of Male, you can grab your (usually pre-arranged) speedboat, seaplane or ferry to your destination island.

For more info, visit the  Male Airport Guide  or  Trans Maldivian Airways .

Do I need a visa?

Though a 30-day tourist visa is given to all travelers upon arrival, there are certain entry requirements, such as a passport that’ll be valid for at least six months.

For more visa info,  see here .

When is the best time to visit?

It doesn’t get much more tropical than the Maldives! And the best time to visit the Maldives is January through March, though prices may be higher this time of year. Prices are typically cheaper May through November during the rainy season. The average daily temperatures most times of the year are highs of 32 C (89 F) and lows of 26 C (78 F).

These high-speed boats are a common way to get around the islands, especially to/from the hotels and airports, but they can be expensive.

These get you to the more far-flung islands in the Maldives if you want to island-hop, but these, too, can be expensive.

Public ferries run between the inhabited islands, but schedules are often unreliable and can vary depending on the time of year. Visit here for more info.

Tour Guides

Tours in the Maldives can be expensive, so tips are not usually expected by guides. But, if one went above and beyond, at least $10 will suffice.

Are there local customs I should know?

The legal drinking age in the Maldives is 18.

Most residents speak English, but learning a few words of the national language Dhivehi is appreciated: “Assalaamu Alaikum” (hello); Ran’galhu, shukuriyaa (fine, thank you); Shukuriyaa (thank you).

Additional entry requirements in the Maldives include proof of pre-paid accommodations and that you have enough funds for your stay as well as confirmed onward/return tickets home. For more info, visit  here .

Environment

Coral reefs are the foundation of the Maldives, so it is very important to not disturb, touch, remove, or stand on its coral reefs when diving or snorkeling. And never leave garbage behind.

Always greet people

A courteous, formal greeting in French, “Bonjour, Monsieur/Madame,” is always appreciated — this includes shop attendants, wait staff, hotel staff, drivers.

Don’t talk loudly in public

It is considered rude and ugly.

Don’t expect fast service

Sales assistants in shops or wait staff in restaurants won’t approach you straight away — giving people time and space is an important part of French culture. Also, don’t expect wait staff to give you the bill when your meal is finished, you will have to ask for it.

Really enjoyed it! Good boat, good food, great snorkelling and also the CEO helped me so I could do a dive instead of snorkelling one of the days which I really appreciate. Could skip the beach clean up, not that its not needed but after collecting several of bags with trash the bags where just left on the island. Just left us all with a bad feeling, first of all seeing all the trash and then collecting as much as we could, was so much left though, just to leave it on the island in the end 🤷‍♀️. BUT the tour was great!
I love the Maldives and really liked Sri Lanka. I'd return (and may) in a heartbeat. The tour "leaders" were top-notch. The food, good, plentiful and inexpensive. Accommodations and transportation were very good. 4.5/5.

Quite an amazing adventure on Maldives made possible with care of the ecosystems and support to the Maldivian people. My guide, Archie/Muhamed was the best guide anyone could ever have in seeing and enjoying the beauty of Maldives. His connections with Maldivian people made my trip comfortable, convenient and an adventure to treasure. Would love to do it again with my family! Thank you so much Archie and Ruth!!

I don’t think I got my money’s worth, the only good thing was our guide, reefs and warm ocean. Let’s talk about hotels that we had to stay in four different islands they all were miserable cheap hotels some of them we had to get in from a dark alley, even we requested hand soap never received it from any of the motels they can not possibly be more than $30 a night We only went to cafes never a decent restaurant. The last island we went was Gulhi I still don’t know why we were there, absolutely nothing to do no reef no snorkeling all we did stay in the motel. THE ONLY ISLAND I WILL RECOMMEND IS MAAFUJI. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY IN ANY OTHER ISLANDS. ANY CARIBBEAN ISLAND HAS WHAT MALDIVES HAS MINUS 72% HUMIDITY
I loved this trip. Not just the fact that it was in the stunning Maldives but our guide Zaff was just amazing. He made everything run smoothly with his easy going and humorous personality. The activities that were included were all really well put together and the trip was good value. I would definitely recommend this trip to others. Can't wait to get back to the beautiful Maldives - I miss you...

Love the hotel! Pick up was waiting for us. Everyone pleasant and helpful.
We are just finishing our Best of Sri Lanka and Maldives tour. The Sri Lanka itinerary was perfect. We saw and experienced so many things: stunning temples, majestic scenery, a beautiful beach, an old Dutch fort, etc. But it was our guide, Sasika who made the trip spectacular. I didn’t expect the tour to be just my husband and myself but it worked out great. Sasika was very easy going and fun to be around. He was always generous with advice and recommendations (and he found the best restaurants). He was always there for us, which really made our time in Sri Lanka great. The Maldives was beautiful. The flight was fine and we met up with the representative easily but to be honest, the hotel, Kaani Grand Seaview, was only ok. It would have been great if we were in our 20s but not so much when you are in your 70s. The people were nice, the beach was across the street, but the air conditioning just couldn’t handle the hot and humid weather (the maintenance person checked it and it got alittle better but it was never comfortable in the room). And because we had an early flight (9:40 am) and the hotel’s earliest transfer was 8 am, we were going to have to pay for our own speed boat transfer so we just moved to a hotel near the airport for the last night. Great hotel with working air conditioning- pure bliss. There was a beach also across the street and In truth, Hulhumale was more interesting to walk around than Maafushi. But I do highly recommend this tour company, especially for tours in Sri Lanka. They were very quick to respond to any question I had prior to arriving and Sasika followed up on any question once we were on the tour. I would definitely use them again.

A huge highlight was meeting and chatting to a Buddhist monk who we met at one of the temples. Standing on top of breathtaking Sigiriya Lion Rock in the early morning. Also swimming with turtles, rays and amazing bright fish in the Maldives.
It was the most amazing trip I’ve been on in 40 years of travel

As a solo traveler it felt good to have something arranged before my arrival in the Maldives. Everything from the speed boat transfer, the hotel room, the staff, the included meals and the included activities was great! Staying in Maafushi and explore other islands was definitely a great Orion
I can honestly say this trip was exceptional! Brad is an excellent guide and is very attentive to each person. This is a small group tour, only 10 of us and that was definitely a plus. The snorkeling was the best I've had in decades. If there was a day that someone didn't want to snorkel, Brad happily gave options and totally assisted in signing up for other activities. (I snorkeled as much as possible because each day brought so many different sea creatures - up close.) The waters were the most pristine you could imagine and the reefs are healthy and full of life. There was one day that I opted to go to the resort island with most of the group. It was a nice break and we really had a great time together. Brad has put together an incredible itinerary, making the most out of each day. We stayed on two islands, yet speed-boated to so many I lost count. It was an amazing adventure. The boat crew were excellent and never let us out of their site while we snorkeled. The first hotel in Maafushi had all ocean views yet I enjoyed the less touristy island of Fulidhoo. The islanders are friendly and both islands were completely safe. We were gone most of the day on amazing sea adventures - the main reason for this tour. If you enjoy viewing sea life in the cleanest, clearest waters, I highly recommend Beach Life Tours. Brad is not only a competent guide, he's also a great person to spend one of the best weeks you'll ever have in your life!

This experience takes the hassle out of planning a trip to the Maldives. You are picked up from the airport and boat transfered to the Island with hotel. Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. We had great sea view rooms. The included half day with lunch tour is great experience. The included buffet breakfast and dinner also great. Through the hotel you can book more adventures to do with your extra days or you can relax in the hotel pools or private beaches. The choice is yours.
The chosen hotels in this tour except Maldives were very poor in quality. The cottages in the resorts in Dambulla was so bad, the first one they put us in was with lots of mildew and mold. They transferred us to another cottage which was smelling so bad I had to wear a face mask to sleep. I got sick the following day with sinus and lung congestion that made me cough so badly I was feeling awefull for several days. My husband also got sick. Mr C. Silva our guide/driver knows about it. Being on restricted diet, the choices of food that was offered me was very limitted, only 2 kinds of fish- king fish and tuna otherwise I had to pay extra. Over all the tour was mediocre.

Tour had great mix of activities included, plus enough free time to relax. Coco (tour manager), and team at our guest house - Lily Rest were amazing! Always available to help with any assistance needed. Hope to go back to Maldives to visit more islands in future.
The mathaveri Inn manager was 17 years old and not very organized. Does not show up on time and very detached.

I did the Maldives Indy Escapes tour and it was perfect!!! Maldives isn't really an easy country to explore as a solo traveller or without spending thousands a day... This is absolutely the way to do it! Highlights: - Maldives is GORGEOUS. The water is even better than it looks on Instagram. (We had perfect weather!) - The itinerary is very well thought out and found it logical and a good mix. This is definitely a tour for water babies! - I did all the optional extras and all were worthwhile. -Hotels were comfortable, clean and basically on the beach - Group dynamics suited me perfectly - average age around 33. 75% female, 60% solos, 65% Australians (rest mainly UK/US), all well travelled and focused on adventure more than partying. -Price: I spent $2100 total in the week (tour, extras, food, all in) which is amazing for the Maldives. - Guide: Lucas is the guide and owner and you can feel the extra passion and care that goes into guiding for your own business. Some considerations: - Weather would have been a major factor. We were lucky to have only perfect days... If not a little hot!(Pack double the amount of sunscreen you think you need) - Maldives is a Muslim country - there is NO alcohol outside of resorts (which is not where we stay) I would absolutely recommend this Maldives tour - it was a perfect week in paradise and everything I hoped for and more. I would absolutely do another tour with Indy Escapes in the future- it's the perfect group travel solution for solo travellers in their 30s.
I’ve recently returned from a trip in the Maldives with Indy Escapes and I wanted to say a particular thank you to the host and guide Lucas Chesterton. I was really scared of open water and I’d booked this trip to try and conquer my fear. He was excellent. He was patient and encouraging and help me conquer my fear. Not only was I happy to jump in the water by the end of the trip but he had me swimming with sharks, mantas, whale sharks and even diving with turtles! I can think him enough. I don’t think I would have had the confidence to do any of that with anyone else! The trip itself was also fantastic. I got to see a side of the Maldives I didn’t know about. We stayed in local islands, hang out with locals, tried delicious food, and stayed in lovely accommodation. I would thoroughly recommend Indy Escapes for anyone wanting to explore the Maldives!

1. There was no orientation of any kind when we boarded the Dhoni. There should have been a safety orientation covering information such as the location of life jackets on the Dhoni, walking safely on the boat in rough waters, emergency procedures. 2. The World Expeditions pre-departure information is not accurate. We did not have a guide, just a Captain and crew. 3. We experienced diesel fumes in our cabin on many occasions which is not a healthy environment. Our clothes smelled of diesel exhaust when we left the Dhoni. 4. The Captain and crew were very friendly and helpful. However, conversation was very limited because of their lack of English. 5. According to the itinerary, we were supposed to meet local people on 2 different islands. We did not do this. We also did not have a beach barbecue. 6. We were shocked to see the amount of garbage on the unhabited islands. It took away the pleasure of being on these islands.
The stunningly beautiful Maldives really can be affordable for anyone. A week spent on a traditional Dhoni, snorkeling on 2 reefs each day, sunbathing on the deck, relaxing - pure bliss. The water is turquoise and crystal clear. The sea life is abundant, we saw reef sharks, sea turtles, sea cucumbers and many wonderful colorful species of fish. We visited islands along the way where we got to meet and mingle with the locals. One of the best parts of the trip was that we were so far from the resorts that we had the reefs completely to ourselves. A really amazing trip!
