Mariah Carey Defrosts Early to Announce ‘Merry Christmas One and All!’ Tour

  • By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

Christmas came early this year: Mariah Carey has announced her Merry Christmas One and All! tour — and this year’s run of holiday-themed shows will be her biggest Christmas-season adventure yet.

Carey will kick off her festive trek on November 15 in Highland, California, and wrap up on December 17 in New York at Madison Square Garden. The 13-date tour is her longest Christmas-season tour yet and her first country-wide trek for this seasonal show since 2019.

Carey began her Christmas shows in 2014 with her All I Want for Christmas Is You mini-residencies at New York’s Beacon Theatre. In 2017, she added a Las Vegas run as well as dates in Europe. The following year, it was exclusively shown in Europe before returning to North America in 2019 for a set of shows. After a pandemic-induced break, Carey brought her holiday season live shows back to just New York and Toronto last winter.

Mariah Carey's final Christmas tour show dazzles with holiday hits, family festivities, Busta Rhymes

mariah carey christmas tour

NEW YORK — The Queen of Christmas is all about creating a moment, and Mariah Carey did just that with the festive finale to her Merry Christmas One and All! Tour on Sunday night.

The New York native wrapped up her tour to a sold-out Madison Square Garden, her second show of the tour at the famed venue and the last of 16 Christmas concerts.

"You bring me so much joy, and the world needs this joy," Carey, 54, said onstage. "There's no greater joy than Christmas."

The holiday hitmaker put on a 90-minute extravaganza of seasonal songs and medleys of her chart-topping music, including classics like "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and her "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" rendition, plus newer Christmas earworms like "Oh Santa!" featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson and "Fall in Love at Christmas" featuring Khalid and Kirk Franklin.

Decked out in glittering garb and ugly Christmas sweaters alike, Carey's "Lambily" of fans were treated to a surprise Busta Rhymes cameo for "I Know What You Want" as well as a mix of "Honey"/"Heartbreaker (Remix)" — and none other than Carey's twins taking the stage.

Carey's daughter Monroe joined her superstar mom for a touching duet of "Jesus Born On This Day." Earlier in the show, the 12-year-old performed a "Christmas Wrapping" cover, singing and playing guitar to the '80s hit. Twin brother Moroccan channeled dad Nick Cannon as he rapped a verse during "Here Comes Santa Claus."

"My children make such a big difference in my life," Carey said. "I love you so much and I learn from you every day."

Carey leaned into the stage persona her fans know and love, decked out in her diva finest while she decked the halls with high notes, infused the show with campy laughs and supported the next generation of performers with young dancers pumping up the crowd.

One of the comedic moments was her "glam squad song," which played as her makeup and hair team rushed to the stage to give her an impromptu touchup.

"I need some glam squad love, you'll hear the song," she said. "Most people do this behind the stage but we're here with you guys so we figured make it an experience, make it mesmerizing."

For anyone who might not have been tapped into the holiday spirit just yet, Sunday's show wrapped up the feeling with a large, fabulous bow.

"Merry Christmas," Carey said and she left the stage in a sleigh, as only she could. "We're going to miss you, love you!"

All we want for Christmas is tickets to Mariah Carey’s upcoming holiday tour.

The self-appointed Queen of Christmas unveiled dates on Monday for her Merry Christmas One and All! tour, which includes several stops in the United States and Canada. The seasonal concert series is scheduled to kick off Nov. 15 at the Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in Highland, near San Bernardino, followed by a Nov. 17 show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

In the court of the Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey: ‘I’m obsessed’

Thanks to her seasonal blockbuster “All I Want for Christmas,” Mariah Carey has become this century’s Bing Crosby, the entertainer who soundtracks the holiday.

Dec. 14, 2020

The announcement was an early surprise from the singer-songwriter , who typically waits until midnight on Nov. 1 to say goodbye to Halloween and ring in the holiday season by spreading yuletide cheer on social media to the tune of her Christmas classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

It’s only fitting that Carey would embark on a holiday tour during the time of year that “All I Want for Christmas” is poised to return to No. 1 on the music charts. The song’s enduring popularity has already spawned a number of related holiday ventures — from duets with Justin Bieber and Michael Bublé to a Christmas special on Apple TV+.

In a December 2020 interview with The Times , Carey reflected on her experience co-writing the tune with longtime collaborator Walter Afanasieff, recalling the moment the infectious melody just “kind of popped out” of her. The track debuted in 1994 and has maintained its status as a Christmastime staple ever since.

Mariah Carey sued by writer of another song named ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’

One lawyer says a $20-million suit over Mariah Carey’s Christmas hit ‘does not bode well’ for plaintiff Andy Stone, who wrote a song of the same name.

June 6, 2022

“We wanted it to feel classic,” Carey told The Times.

“I didn’t want it to feel ’90s. It probably feels ’90s now to people who are nostalgic about the ’90s. But in the ’90s, it was something different. ... I wanted it to be timeless. And to feel festive. ... We were having the best time in the studio. It sounds corny, but I think you can hear it on the record.”

After launching her Christmas tour in California, Carey is slated to travel to various cities — from Chicago to Boston — before ending her holiday concert series at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Dec. 17.

Now, the “All I Want For Christmas” singer is slated to headline at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Saturday, Dec. 9 and Sunday, Dec. 17 .

Over the years, an end of year Christmas jaunt has become a bit of tradition for the 54-year-old pop icon; according to  Set List FM , she conducted Yuletide-themed tours from 2014-19 and started back up in 2022 where she performed with her daughter, Monroe Cannon.

Mariah Carey set list

As you may have guessed, Carey keeps it pretty Christmas-centric on tour.

Mariah Carey Christmas video

Once Halloween ends, it’s Mariah season.

In a humorous Instagram video , Carey finds herself inside a vault, frozen into a block of ice as the clock strikes midnight on Nov. 1.

As the camera reveals what’s happening around her, we find she’s surrounded by a gaggle of Halloween ghouls using hair dryers to break her free.

Finally, our diva regains consciousness and uses her famous falsetto to break free as she sings, “It’s time!” before breaking into a celebratory dance.

For those who want a peek, you can find the goofy clip here .

Review: ‘Queen of Christmas’ or not, Mariah Carey reigns over Wells Fargo Center

Carey began the Philly show of her Merry Christmas One And All Tour with 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.' No prizes for guessing what she ended with.

Mariah Carey singing "All I Want for Christmas Is You" at a previous tour stop on "Merry Christmas One and All" tour, which played the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday night.

Christmas comes but once a year, and brings Mariah Carey a big payday.

‘Tis the season not just for the self-proclaimed “Queen of Christmas,” whose “Merry Christmas One and All” holiday music extravaganza arrived at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday, for a 90-minute set of mostly mistletoe-and-holly seasonal songs.

Along with Carey, several other (mostly deceased) holiday music creators are in on the action: Bobby Helms (“Jingle Bell Rock”), Wham! (“Last Christmas”), Burl Ives (“Holly Jolly Christmas”), and Andy Williams (“The Most Wonderful Time of The Year”) all have current Top 10 hits.

As does Brenda Lee , the former “Little Miss Dynamite” whose 1958 “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” has topped the Billboard chart for two weeks running, besting Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” at #2. All of those old songs are new again, thanks to retail outlets relentlessly playing them on music streaming services like Spotify throughout the holiday shopping season.

“All I Want,” which Carey wrote with Walter Afanasieff in 1994, and was ably covered by the Eagles’ singing linemen on A Philly Special Christmas Special this year, is the most modern of holiday standards. It doesn’t turn 30 until next year. And it’s the reason for being for Carey’s annual Yuletide takeover, which began this year with a pre-Thanksgiving social media post in which she emerged from a block of ice and announced: “It’s Time!”

But one song does not a full-blown holiday show make, and Carey had 90 minutes to fill on Wednesday night. And since she’s fully committed to the concept, with more than twice as much time devoted to jingle-jangle songs than to her own hits, that made for a lot of holiday content.

Which was just fine with the audience that packed the South Philly arena, arriving in Santa hats if not head-to-toe Santa suits. As DJ Suss One warmed up the crowd inside, people took the time to mingle around the 20-foot-tree strategically placed in the concourse near the merch stand. That and the unfortunately-not-chewable Gingerbread House. “This house is not edible,” a candy-cane-decorated sign declared. “Please no eating, tasting, or licking the house.”

Carey made her entrance to a remixed recording of Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” joining young ballerinas, eight dancers dressed as hotel porters, and three backup vocalists (including R&B singer Trey Lorenz) and a fine, understated four-person band.

The star of the show began the evening in a floor-length red gown, and opened with the 18th-century English carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” which she recorded on her first of two holiday albums, Merry Christmas , which came out in 1994.

It signaled that the set would mix secular holiday fare like Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and Carey’s own “Oh Santa!” along with traditional standards like “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.” The latter hymn by English cleric Isaac Watts got remixed with Three Dog Night’s 1971 hit of the same name.

As pop superstars’ arena-sized stage shows go, Carey’s approach is uncharacteristically sedate. There was lots of movement on stage, but little of it coming from Carey herself. She donned a spiked golden goddess crown when joined on “Jesus Born on This Day” by her daughter, Monroe Cannon. Cannon also took lead vocals on a cover of The Waitresses’ snappy 1981 hit “Christmas Wrapping” while her mother was off stage changing her costume.

With its wholesome content and unhurried pace, “Merry Christmas One and All” could be confused with a 1970s television variety show. It doesn’t rely on splashy visuals or exploding fireworks but puts the emphasis on Carey both playing up her diva status — she twice called out her two-man “Glam Squad” to tidy up her hair and makeup on stage — and doing what she does best: singing.

She seemed to be singing live, with no electronic trickery — with able support from her backup singers and on some songs, an eight-person choir — throughout the evening.

About two-thirds of the way through, she broke from the holiday program for a medley of her own hits, with eight songs run through in 15 minutes, starting with “Always Be My Baby” and closing with “Fly Like a Bird.”

She did put her famous five-octave vocal range on display, ever so briefly, in hitting the glass-shattering note in “Emotions,” the slinky 1991 groove that is still her most delectable hit. But she missed her opportunity to put a ribbon on “Fly Like a Bird” with a “Go, Birds!,” but there was a cheesesteak reference earlier in the show.

Two secular songs got full-length treatment, each with a message of positivity: “We Belong Together” from 2005′s The Emancipation of Mimi and “Hero,” from 1993′s Music Box , on which the room was filled up with sparkling white light from mobile phones held high.

And then … it really was time for “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which kept up the unafraid-to-be-corny, old-fashioned presentation with Carey riding on and off the stage on a train.

After all these years, the song is certainly still a banger, and its love-conquers-commercialism sentiment melts away cynicism the way the best Christmas songs do. But after having heard it seemingly hundreds of times already this holiday season, it felt anticlimactic to actually see it performed in person in a live version that was spirited but couldn’t match the snow-globe perfection of the original that’s been in your head for weeks.

Here is the set list for Mariah Carey’s show on Dec. 13, 2023, on her “Merry Christmas One and All” tour stop at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center:

Mariah Carey Says She Is 'So Grateful' for Christmas Tour: 'Memories That Will Last a Lifetime'

The singer, 54, concluded her Christmas tour in New York City on Dec. 17

Mariah Carey is feeling grateful after her Christmas tour!

The legendary songstress, 54, reflected on her successful Merry Christmas One and All! tour in a post on Friday as she shared a behind-the-scenes video of her on tour after performing her final concert last weekend.

“This tour has given me memories that will last a lifetime!” Carey wrote in the caption. “I’m so grateful to everyone who made it happen — the creative team, crew, band, dancers, singers, the incredible guests and of course YOU — the fans! I love you!!”

“Early Merry Christmas One and All! ❤️🎄🎁,” the singer added.

At the beginning of the video, Carey sat on a couch in a festive red gown with a sweeping train as her holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You ,” played over the top. “It’s Christmas!” the singer said before a montage of clips from the tour played.

During the video, Carey got make-up ready in a dressing room and performed onstage with Jennifer Hudson , Ariana Grande , Busta Rhymes, and Da Brat . She also greeted Kim and Khloé Kardashian backstage after the pair attended her concert with their children recently.

Carey’s twins Moroccan and Monroe , 12, — who joined their mom on tour — also appeared in the video. Moroccan was first seen looking nervous backstage before performing solo. Monroe, meanwhile, appeared with Carey onstage as they held hands and sang together.

In a rare behind-the-scenes family moment, Carey ate snacks in bed with the twins as their pet dogs joined them. Another clip showed Carey leading her tour members in a line backstage as she held hands with Moroccan and Monroe.

A final zoomed-in shot revealed Carey’s sparkly gold-decorated Christmas tree.

Carey concluded her Christmas tour last weekend in New York City after 16 shows. The festive tour began on Nov. 15 and it was the first time the singer had performed her Christmas show nationally.

Following her time on the road, Carey — who appeared to have split from boyfriend Bryan Tanaka recently — is focused on “having a fun holiday” with children, Moroccan and Monroe, shared with ex-husband Nick Cannon , a source told PEOPLE earlier this week.

“Mariah is thriving this Christmas,” the insider said. “She’s feeling good and is in fully festive Mariah mode. She’s thrilled with the success of the tour with her kids and work she’s already done on her next album.”

No one can belt out a Christmas carol quite like Mariah Carey, who shares initials with “Merry Christmas.” So when the self-proclaimed “queen” of the holiday headed to United Center for a seasonal showdown Sunday night, Chicago came ready to celebrate.

The sold-out arena was decked and stuffed with scores of revelers dressed in their best ballgowns, sequined frocks, Santa hats and flashing light necklaces like one big citywide Christmas party. Steven “DJ Suss One” — Carey’s DJ since 2006 — helped hype up the room with a dustbin of holiday songs and club hits before she hit the stage, her voice proceeding her.

As the live band delved into a “overture” of “Sugar Plum Fairy,” accompanied by two pint-sized ballerinas tiptoeing along to the song, Carey’s dolphin high notes came through the speakers as she ascended from underneath the stage through a cut in the center. The entrance was dramatic and theatrical and totally on brand for the pop chanteuse who filled the following hour-and-a-half with Christmas spirit for sure, but a whole lot of her diva spirit, too.

Not only did Carey require a male companion to walk her backstage for five outfit changes, she also had her “glam squad” come out to powder her face and brush her hair twice during the show (“I have to go through the drama to look nice for you,” she told the crowd). When the stage lights went out during the first song, Carey zeroed in on the moment with snarky commentary that made you wonder if someone was getting fired that night. But none of it could compare to Carey wearing an ostentatious golden halo crown, coming off looking like the Virgin Mary while singing “Silent Night.”

Joined by a talented four-piece band led by her musical director Daniel Moore and three backup singers, Carey opened the family-friendly Christmas concert with “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing / Gloria (In Excelsis Deo),” fitting for her perfect-pitch voice, which sounded nothing short of angelic. At 54, Carey’s gifted voice is still pristine, and she showed it off, peppering her unbelievable high notes into nearly every song, even when it wasn’t necessary to have the filler.

The night’s set list was the perfect retail-store soundtrack of ubiquitous holiday hits, including covers of classics like Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” There was also a faithful take on “Joy to the World” in which Carey was joined by a robed choir whose tender voices were the epitome of peace. The singer also ran through more of her originals from her R&B pop Christmas albums including 1994’s “Merry Christmas” and 2010’s “Merry Christmas II You.”

  • Mariah Carey sued again over ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’

The tour — dubbed “Merry Christmas One And All!” — is an expanded continuation of Carey’s similar short holiday run in 2022, later adapted into a highly rated TV special that ran on CBS. Much like that production, the concert was filled with music as well as skilled choreography from a dancing squad that included some very young talents and a rotating mix of holiday motifs from snowglobe backdrops for the secular songs to a star of Bethlehem for the more reverent numbers.

There was also a good portion of the set devoted to her non-Christmas classics, including a rushed medley of hits including “Always Be My Baby,” “Dreamlover” and “Emotions” as well as full takes on “We Belong Together” and “Hero” that were reminders of what brought Carey to the top of the pop pile in the ’90s.

  • Chicago’s annual Christmas tree ship inspires ‘warm’ feelings on a cool day

While some of the segues between the show’s acts were a bit sloppy and poorly timed, especially the pauses waiting for Carey’s numerous outfit changes, the interludes gave way to showcasing some other talents including her own children. Son Moroccan “Roc” Cannon offered a rap breakdown during the outro of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)” while daughter Monroe Cannon helped lead a cover of The Waitress’ “Christmas Wrapping” and, later, joined her mother for a duet of Carey’s original “Jesus Born on This Day.”

Home videos featuring Carey and the twins celebrating the holidays through the years also played on screens before the ultimate show moment, a blitzed-out finale of her estimated $3-million-a-year-making “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” complete with a downpour of fake “snow” confetti. No matter how forced the song is upon us for 30-plus days every year, there’s no denying its massive pop appeal, and hearing it live deserves a spot on that Christmas wish list.

An Ode to Mariah Carey’s Diva Style on Her 55th Birthday From One Devoted “Lamb”

By Alex Kessler

Image may contain Mariah Carey Clothing Dress Face Happy Head Person Smile Blonde Hair and Formal Wear

With a string of chart-topping hits under her belt and her status as the queen of Christmas undiminished, Mariah Carey stands tall as one of the most influential musical forces of our time. She’s insured her vocal cords and legs for a cool $70 million! Beyond the obvious bangers like “Fantasy,” “Heartbreaker,” and “We Belong Together” that have etched themselves into our collective consciousness, true aficionados–myself included–recognize the deeper resonance found in her lesser-known gems–tracks like “Can’t Take That Away (Mariah’s Theme),” “The Roof,” and “Through the Rain”–where themes of pain, vulnerability and personal growth connects deeply with her devoted “lambs.”

As an ardent fan of the original pop diva–she was my first concert experience in 1997, I performed her song “Hero” at my first singing recital when I was nine, and I still listen to her music every single day now–this tribute not only celebrates Mariah’s indelible imprint on music and culture, along with her iconic “shady” one liners, but also pays homage to her extravagant fashion sensibilities. To celebrate her 55th “anniversary”–Mariah doesn’t do birthdays–we chart the legendary songwriter’s sartorial evolution from over the years.

The ballad songstress

Ever since her explosive debut in 1990 with her eponymous album, Mariah has been hailed as the prime contender to inherit Whitney Houston’s mantle as the voice of a generation. Back then, she epitomized the image of a ballad diva, with her golden locks and chic little black dresses. Her wardrobe often featured pieces from the Tom Ford era at Gucci , yet one unforgettable ensemble was a crystal-encrusted creation by Pamela Dennis , which she wore in 1991 while accepting two Grammy awards. Reflecting on her fashion choices, she told Vogue , “I know that I was very wrong for the earring choice, but whatever; I’m not going to disrespect the moment!”

The princess bride

Back in 1993, Mariah tied the knot with music tycoon Tommy Mottola at the Grand St Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. Their extravagant $500,000 union was straight out of a fairy tale, reportedly drawing inspiration from Princess Diana and Prince Charles’s epic nuptials. Mariah stole the show in a breathtaking Vera Wang gown reminiscent of Princess Di’s–decked out with a 10-foot veil and a 27-foot train–reportedly costing a hefty $25,000. The guest list? A star-studded line-up from the ’90s music scene, including Barbra Streisand, Michael Bolton, Bruce Springsteen and Ozzy Osbourne. Although their marriage ended in 1997, Mariah’s unforgettable dress lives on, making a cameo in her “We Belong Together” music video in 2005.

Rihanna Delivers a New Take on Rocker-Chic

Mariah’s seventh album, Rainbow –my second favorite in her repertoire, after Butterfly , which is often hailed as her magnum opus (even Ariana Grande wore a T-shirt of this album’s artwork recently)–ushered in a new era of style for the songstress. Embracing a more R&B-pop sound over her signature power ballads, she embarked on something of a fashion evolution. In her 1999 “Heartbreaker” music video, she made waves sporting shredded low-rise jeans paired with a spray-painted white tank top. In the years that ensued, during the release of her albums Glitter and Charmbracelet , Mariah showcased a plethora of denim looks. One standout moment was her wearing of a crystal-embellished top shaped like a butterfly, paired with snug jeans and strappy sandals, naturally.

The athlete

Earning a spot on Time Out ’s list of all-time worst first pitches (a historic moment, nonetheless), Mariah graced the Tokyo Dome in 2011. While her pitching skills left much to be desired, she served up an athletic-adjacent ensemble, including a cropped pink satin varsity jacket, denim cut-off shorts and a white leather pair of heels (oh and oversized shades and ‘sporty’ diamond hoops).

The snow bunny

In the era predating Aspen’s rise as a magnet for modern-day supermodels and influencers, like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, Mariah was already a firm fixture in the elite snow scene, captivating us all with her opulent winter attire. Amidst the snow-kissed landscape, Mariah continues to effortlessly blend luxury labels, such as Burberry and Chanel, yet her style essence lies in harmonious tonalities. Brace yourself for pristine whites and soft beiges, adorned with a plethora of diamonds, as Mariah graces the winter wonderland of Aspen on an annual basis.

The glamorous diva

Image may contain Mariah Carey Fashion Blonde Hair Person Adult Accessories Jewelry Necklace Bracelet and Bag

Mariah’s diva credentials didn’t just come out of nowhere. A quick Google search reveals countless reasons why her name is practically synonymous with the term. From her legendary Mariah-isms–like sleeping surrounded by 20 humidifiers to pamper her voice, or insisting on a red carpet lined with white candles before stepping out of any limousine–to her famous snub of a certain popstar with the classic line: “I don’t know her.” But Mariah’s diva essence isn’t just confined to her quirks; it’s also woven into her style: Think waist-snatching fishtail gowns by Schiaparelli , Giambattista Valli , and Dolce & Gabbana . If it’s dripping in glitter, sequins and feathers, even better.

The queen of Christmas

Image may contain Mariah Carey Clothing Glove Electrical Device Microphone Adult Person Hat and Festival

In 1994, Mariah dropped her single “All I Want for Christmas is You”–a sensation that continues to reverberate worldwide every holiday season without fail. Just last year, the track soared to the top spot for the fifth consecutive year, racking up a reported $100 million in royalty earnings. Mariah reigns supreme as the undisputed queen of Christmas, and with the yuletide cheer comes a flood of festive fashions. Picture everything from sassy Mrs. Claus-inspired ensembles to dazzling bodysuits reminiscent of toy soldiers.
