How to download and play Mario Kart Tour

The latest Nintendo mobile game starts its engines

mario kart tour apple tv

Those of you looking for a quick fix of Nintendo magic have to look no further than Mario Kart Tour , which is now racing onto mobile.

Following the launches of Super Mario Run and Dr Mario - both simplified versions of the classic Nintendo franchises – Mario Kart Tour offers a way to race around classic Mario Kart tracks in those spare minutes on the bus, in the duller part of a meeting, or throughout all of your Tinder dates (we’ve seen you).

There have been countless Mario Kart titles across various Nintendo consoles, from the initial SNES title to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch . But for how to download and play Mario Kart Tour on iOS and Android, here’s everything you need to know.

  • How to download and play Super Mario Run

1. Check your phone (or tablet) can play it

mario kart tour apple tv

Mario Kart Tour will run on iOS and Android smartphones or tablets, so the game won’t be exclusive to certain product ranges – as we saw with the timed exclusivity of Fortnite mobile on Samsung Galaxy phones .

The Mario Kart Tour website does however recommend “a device with 1.5 GB of RAM or more.”

2. Download the app

mario kart tour apple tv

Pretty self-explanatory, but it will depend on your operating system and the device you’re playing on. For iPhones or iPads that run iOS, you’ll need to head to the App Store and search for the title. The full name is “Mario Kart Tour”, and it will be listed by “Nintendo Co., Ltd”, so make sure you don’t get caught out with any false apps or cackling malware . Android users will need to head to the Play Store instead – and all mobile users can pre-order / pre-register to get the game the moment it lands.

You’ll need some space on your phone for the actual app; Super Mario Run took up 205mb of data, so make sure you have enough to actually download the game in the first place.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Get the hottest deals available in your inbox plus news, reviews, opinion, analysis and more from the TechRadar team.

3. Link your Nintendo account, or create one

Once the app is downloaded, you’ll have to link up with your Nintendo account, which is something you’ll have if you’re already a Nintendo Switch owner, or had a Nintendo Wii or Wii U in your home. If this is your first foray into Nintendo – gasp – you’ll be taken through the steps, and will require a valid email address.

4. Beware of microtransactions

mario kart tour apple tv

Like Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour is a free-to-play game, meaning there will be optional microtransactions for cosmetic or gameplay items available (characters, kart parts, etc). If you’re setting up an account for your child , or just don’t trust your own self-control, you can check out the iOS controls or Android controls for this.

5. Get a good internet connection

Nintendo usually ensures its mobile games require an internet connection to play – for security reasons – meaning you won’t be able to crack out a blue shell in the dark depths of the subway. Wi-Fi in a home, office, cafe, or similar will be best, though a decent 4G connection (or 5G !) out and about should do you just fine as well.

Take a Mario Kart Tour

Mario Kart Tour

Race around the world!

Slam on the gas, give Luigi a nudge, powerslide around Bowser, and power up past the pack. First released in 1992, Nintendo’s legendary Mario Kart series has set the pace for thrilling, over-the-top arcade racing—and it’s coming to iPhone and iPad with Mario Kart Tour . Here’s what to expect from this finely tuned experience.

Tour the world

Mario Kart Tour whisks you around the globe with tracks based in New York, Tokyo, Paris, and other metropolitan hot spots. And it wouldn’t be Mario Kart without classic tracks from the franchise’s rich history as well.

What’s more, this tour never ends. There will be a new tour based on different cities, and the cast changes looks based on each location. When Mario arrives in New York, for instance, he dresses like a band member. Paint the town red!

Meet your match

From wild jumps and shortcuts to boxes brimming with shells, mushrooms, and other potent power-ups, Mario Kart Tour hits all the classic notes. But it’s got a few new tricks.

Characters, karts, and gliders have affinities for different tracks that yield cool bonuses. Match the right character with the right course to get three item slots instead of one, or match a kart to get a slight score boost.

And if you have three item slots and manage to collect the same items while racing, you’ll trigger Frenzy Mode, which grants you a burst of invincibility and limitless use of that item. Goodbye eighth place, hello checkered flag.

Slide into first

Built specifically for touchscreens, Mario Kart Tour ’s controls couldn’t be simpler: Steer by swiping left and right (or tilting your device). Need to drift around a tight bend? Hold after a turn to trigger powerslides that give you a small speed boost. Nailing that perfect drift line and exiting a hairpin ahead of the competition never gets old.

Pre-order now and Mario Kart Tour will automatically download to your device the moment it hits the starting line.

How to Play Mario Kart on TV: The Ultimate Guide

As Nintendo‘s beloved arcade-style kart racing franchise, Mario Kart has long been one of gaming‘s most popular multiplayer series. But with Mario Kart being exclusive to Nintendo platforms, how can you experience its frantic fun on your big screen TV? This comprehensive 2250+ word guide will provide everything you need to know to set up Mario Kart gaming on your television.

An Introduction to the Mario Kart Phenomenon

Ever since the original Super Mario Kart launched the series in 1992 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Mario Kart has become a cultural gaming phenomenon. Its simple, accessible mechanics mixed with interactive courses, iconic music, and competitive items system make it one of the most enjoyable party games ever created.

The series has sold over 165 million copies worldwide across its many entries, generating over $1.5 billion in revenue for Nintendo. According to review aggregate site Metacritic, Mario Kart scores an average of 82 out of 100 across the franchise, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch achieving an 88 ranking as the best-reviewed installment. This long-running excellence has cemented Mario Kart as a must-play multiplayer experience.

Mario Kart Gameplay and Modes

The core Mario Kart gameplay centers around kart racing, with players using drift boosts, items and shortcuts in hopes of crossing the finish line first. Grand Prix mode features tournaments across various themed cups and circuits. VS mode supports multiplayer racing between friends. Battle mode offers arena-style last man standing and team battles with weapons.

Each new entry has innovated with new elements like anti-gravity karts, 12-player online, hang gliders and underwater sections. This constant refinement has kept the series feeling fresh over its 8 mainline titles.

Mario Kart as an eSport

Mario Kart has built a thriving competitive scene, especially in Japan. The All Japan Mario Kart Tournament hosted by Hori draws top players vying for a ¥5 million prize pool. North America‘s Mario Kart 8 tournaments boast five-figure payouts. The game‘s depth beyond just arcade racing has turned it into a legitimate eSport.

Techniques like "snaking", "firehopping" and mastering corners demonstrate serious driving skill. Items add randomness but smart usage provides strategies around attacking and defending. Mario Kart rewards both reflexes and strategy, making it compelling to play and watch at the highest level.

What Consoles Can Run Mario Kart Games?

Being a Nintendo mascot racer, the Mario Kart series is exclusive to Nintendo platforms. This means the only consoles able to play Mario Kart currently are:

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Wii U

Nintendo 3DS

The recently launched free-to-play Mario Kart Tour for iOS and Android also features online multiplayer functionality using smartphones. But for the full Mario Kart experience on a television, a Nintendo console is required.

Of the current generation hardware, only the Nintendo Switch can run the critically acclaimed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – making it the foremost Mario Kart platform today.

Connecting the Nintendo Switch to Your TV

Here is a step-by-step guide to connect your Nintendo Switch to a TV:

  • Dock the Nintendo Switch into the included Switch Dock.
  • Connect the Dock‘s HDMI cable to an open HDMI port on your TV.
  • Plug the Dock‘s AC adapter into a power outlet and connect it to the Dock.
  • Turn on your TV and select the correct HDMI input.
  • Press the Power button on your Switch to turn it on.
  • The Switch screen will now display onto your TV, allowing you to play Switch games like Mario Kart on the big screen.

The Switch Dock provides an instant TV connection experience. Simply inserting the tablet-like Switch console into the Dock automatically outputs the HD video feed to your television.

Examining Nintendo Consoles for Mario Kart Gaming

While the Nintendo Switch is optimal, here‘s a look at some other Nintendo console options for enjoying Mario Kart on your television:

Nintendo Wii

  • Released in 2006
  • Marketed as a casual, family-friendly console
  • Motion controls via Wii Remotes
  • 102.63 million units sold, 3rd best-selling home console ever

The hugely popular Wii received an exclusive Mario Kart title in 2008 – Mario Kart Wii . This entry sold over 37 million copies, supporting up to 4 player local split-screen racing. The Wii‘s budget redesign, the Wii Mini, retained compatibility with Mario Kart Wii. Both models can be found affordably priced second-hand.

  • Released in 2011
  • First glasses-free 3D handheld
  • Dual screen clamshell form factor
  • 75.94 million units sold, 3rd best-selling handheld ever

While a portable device, the Nintendo 3DS can output gameplay wirelessly or via cable to a TV using its optional Game Boy Advance Video Link Cable accessory. Mario Kart 7 introduced the franchise‘s first hang glider and underwater racing mechanics on this system.

Nintendo Switch OLED

  • Released in 2021
  • Upgraded 7-inch OLED screen
  • Enhanced audio, 64GB storage
  • Improved kickstand
  • Built-in wired LAN port

The new Switch OLED model provides a brighter, more vivid handheld display while retaining full compatibility with the Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game and TV connectivity through its included Dock. Its onboard LAN port enables smooth lag-free online races.

Mario Kart Goes Mobile with Mario Kart Tour

In 2019, Nintendo brought Mario Kart to smartphones for the first time with Mario Kart Tour . Though using simplified one-touch controls, Tour retains Mario Kart‘s familiar racing action and colorful graphics. Recent updates added real-time online multiplayer for up to 8 players – no Nintendo console required. While not as deep as the full Mario Kart experience, Tour provides mobile kart racing on iOS and Android devices.

Multiplayer Modes in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch

The Nintendo Switch‘s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe represents the pinnacle of the series‘ intuitive racing gameplay, boasting enhanced HD graphics and a massive roster of 42 racers. Its multiplayer options include:

  • Local wireless play for up to 8 players on separate Switch systems
  • Up to 4 player splitscreen play on one Switch in both TV and handheld modes
  • Online multiplayer for up to 12 players
  • LAN play for two docked Switches to race online privately

Deluxe‘s plethora of content and multiplayer flexibility cement it as the definitive modern Mario Kart experience.

Why the Nintendo Switch is the Ideal Mario Kart Console

While Mario Kart spans Nintendo‘s platforms, the Nintendo Switch stands tall as the best console choice today for Mario Kart gaming on TV:

  • Plays acclaimed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Metacritic 88)
  • HD graphics and slick 60 FPS performance
  • TV, tabletop and handheld gaming modes
  • Intuitive Joy-Con motion controls
  • Multiplayer support for up to 12 players online
  • Full backwards compatibility with Wii U titles
  • Access to Nintendo‘s deep library of acclaimed franchises

The Switch‘s versatility, first-party game catalog and continual support from Nintendo make it the obvious Mario Kart platform for both casual and competitive players.

The Mario Kart Wheel Accessory

Bundles of Mario Kart on Wii, Wii U and Switch frequently include a plastic steering wheel shell housing the controller to mimic real driving. The Wii Wheel provides natural motion controls for steering and added immersion. While not required, the steering wheel offers a more engaging experience for younger or more casual Mario Kart players.

Mario Kart for All Ages

A major factor in Mario Kart‘s widespread appeal and approachability is its enjoyment across age groups from young children to parents and grandparents. Its colorful visuals, catchy music, and accessible driving mechanics make it a fun party game for both novice and experienced gamers. Younger kids can use driving assists while advanced techniques provide skill progression for seasoned players. This blend creates an entertaining racing experience anyone can pick up and play.

Non-Nintendo Platforms Without Mario Kart

Unfortunately for owners of non-Nintendo systems, Mario Kart is only playable on Nintendo consoles. Competing platforms like the PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One & Series X/S, and gaming PCs do not have access to any Mario Kart titles. Even emulating older games via ROMs constitutes copyright infringement of Nintendo‘s intellectual property.

This exclusive availability means Nintendo consoles remain the only way to legally experience Mario Kart‘s arcade racing madness on your television. But the depth, quality and ongoing support of the Mario Kart series continue to drive Nintendo hardware sales.

In Conclusion

For over 30 years, Mario Kart‘s signature blend of creativity, challenge and multiplayer mayhem has made it one of gaming‘s most enduring franchises. Though locked to Nintendo ecosystems, options like the Switch, Wii and 3DS allow fans to enjoy its kart racing excitement on the big screen. With this guide‘s comprehensive details, you can now set up immersive Mario Kart action on your TV and see what all the fuss is about!

Mario Kart Tour is too cynical to be fun

Nintendo’s mobile games keep getting worse.

Mario in a car while racing in the game Mario Kart Tour.

Mario Kart Tour could not have come out at a worse time. A week ago, the surprisingly excellent launch of Apple Arcade reminded people just how good mobile gaming could be when developers no longer had to worry about squeezing in ads or in-app purchases. In a mobile market almost completely dominated by free-to-play games that constantly demand time and money, Apple Arcade was a breath of fresh air. Mario Kart Tour , meanwhile, is a stark reminder of those dark days.

At its most basic, Mario Kart Tour is what it sounds like: a simplified Mario Kart you can play on your phone. It looks like Mario Kart , albeit with slightly sterile graphics, and you’ll hear familiar tunes as you race. Power-ups like red shells and banana peels are still present, and if you’re in first place you’ll still need to be wary of blue shells.

That core is bland and inoffensive

The biggest change in terms of gameplay is that the entire experience is controlled via touch. Your kart will drive automatically, but you’re able to control it by swiping left or right to turn. There are a few deeper mechanics — you can drift for a speed boost, for instance — but it’s mostly very simple, and the controls are frustratingly imprecise. One good thing: using items is fairly intuitive, requiring a simple tap on the screen.

You progress through the game as you would in a typical Mario Kart game. There are a series of cup events, each of which involves a handful of races, and once you earn enough stars you’ll unlock the next cup to play through. The tracks take place in familiar spots like Cheep Cheep Lagoon and Rock Rock Mountain, but, like the controls, they’ve been extremely simplified. Whether you’re speeding across a city or an underwater course, everything is straightforward. There’s none of the inventive, manic creativity of Mario Kart 8 on display here.

That core is bland and inoffensive, doing just enough to feel like Mario Kart . The problem is so much of the game feels designed around monetization, as opposed to just being a fun game. This is particularly apparent when it comes to unlocking new characters and karts. Like so many of Nintendo’s recent mobile efforts, Mario Kart Tour utilizes loot boxes. Spend a few rubies — the game’s premium currency — and you can have the chance to get a random character or vehicle. Even worse, they’ve turned the warp pipe, an iconic symbol of Super Mario , into a giant cannon that shoots out your mystery prize. There’s also a store that cycles through different characters each day, which you can buy with coins collected during races or in a special mode that costs rubies to play.

“ Super Mario Run  is going to introduce millions of more people to the fun of  Mario .” - Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto on bringing the series to iPhone

This is generally par for the course in mobile gaming today, of course. But it feels particularly irksome in a game series so full of unabashed joy like Mario Kart . The mobile iteration even goes a step farther by offering a $4.99 monthly subscription — the same price as Apple Arcade! — that gets you access to gold-tier items and a high-speed racing mode. It’s sort of like Fortnite ’s battle pass, only a much worse deal. This all turns one of the best parts of Mario Kart — winning races to unlock new stuff — into a costly enterprise.

The sad state of Mario Kart Tour is part of a steady decline in Nintendo’s mobile efforts. Things started off promising, with an iPhone version of Super Mario designed by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto , one that was sold in its entirety for $10. After that proved to be a failure , Nintendo pivoted to free-to-play with Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp . They were fun, Nintendo-quality games with mechanics like loot boxes tacked on — and they made a lot of money . Things have since taken a turn for the dire. In addition to Mario Kart Tour , earlier this year Nintendo launched a puzzle game that was essentially Dr. Mario -themed Candy Crush , and both games are aggressively monetized to the point that the actual game feels secondary.

This doesn’t mean Mario Kart Tour won’t be successful. In fact, early signs point to the game having a record-breaking launch . But that success isn’t because the game is good, and it’s especially disappointing from a company that prides itself on quality. Mobile aside, Nintendo is at a creative high point, regularly launching major Switch games to near-universal acclaim. They’re games that sell hardware and help players think differently about what games can be. On console, Nintendo sets its own pace; on mobile, it follows.

Mario Kart Tour is available as a free download now on iOS and Android .

Mario Kart Tour Shows Exactly Why We Need Apple Arcade

Mario Kart Tour

Toggle Dark Mode

After over a year-long wait, Nintendo’s Mario Kart Tour arrived for iPhone and iPad this week, and by all reports the game has had a pretty successful launch, quickly reaching the top of the App Store charts within a day of its release.

However, as we’ve known since Nintendo first announced the popular title would be coming to Apple’s mobile devices, Mario Kart Tour will be following in the footsteps of the company’s other popular title, Super Mario Run, as another “free-to-start” game .

Despite the tactic of misleadingly using the word “free,” what this actually means is that the game isn’t just being monetized, but it’s being monetized in what is arguably one of the most consumer unfriendly ways possible — basically giving users a “demo” of a few levels of the game before making them pay to continue playing, or locking other important features and modes behind in-app payments and subscriptions.

In the case of Mario Kart Tour, the game is free to download, but once you get into it and start playing, it feels, as Engadget’s Nick Summers puts it , like an Excel spreadsheet with all of the different currencies and in-app purchases hidden inside. There are coins that you can either earn from races or buy yourself with real money, then there are rubies that you can buy to multiply your coins, and then there’s the “pipe” that’s just a lootbox by another name, which requires rubies to buy.

However, what Nintendo really just wants you to do is skip all of the nickel-and-diming and purchase a $4.99 monthly “Gold Pass” subscription in order to access all of the features of the game instead, including some, like the fastest 200cc race mode, that’s simply not accessible in any other way except by ponying up for a monthly subscription.

Out of Touch with Reality

Simple math reveals that what Nintendo is asking for here is the same monthly subscription fee as Apple is charging for its whole subscription gaming service — a platform that promises over 100 high-quality games that won’t be saddled with anything that even remotely resembles an in-app payment system or subscription.

So if you’re wondering what the executives at Nintendo are smoking, you’re far from alone. As Polygon explains, Nintendo’s pricing is even egregious by its own standards. The company charges $3.99 for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which grants Switch users access to dozens of games, ironically also including the original Super Mario Kart for Super NES.

Mario Kart Tour’s monetization might have flown a few months ago, even if some players would have grumbled, but what felt opportunistic before the launch of Apple Arcade now feels like a remnant from another time entirely. Austen Goslin, Polygon

We were exceedingly disappointed when we first heard of Nintendo’s plans for the game , and now coming in the shadow of Apple Arcade, it’s suddenly feeling downright anachronistic.

This kind of hubris isn’t new for Nintendo, however, which famously held out from releasing its games for iOS for years in an attempt to keep its fans within its own hardware ecosystem. Still, it seems that Nintendo is counting on a loyal fan base that it believes will be willing to shell out $5/month for a single Nintendo classic, but nonetheless it’s a move that feels downright hypocritical from a company that told its partners only a few months ago that freemium games were tarnishing its reputation by making the company appear “too greedy.”

Even if Nintendo hasn’t gotten the picture yet, however, Apple has written the message on the wall loud and clear with Apple Arcade that the era of exploitative “freemium” gaming is coming to an end.

Mario Kart Tour's subscription costs the same as Apple Arcade

You can pay $5 a month to get more speed and in-game items in Nintendo's iOS and Android racer, but it's currently lacking multiplayer.

mario kart tour apple tv

Toadette is hitting the track in Mario Kart Tour.

The free-to-start Mario Kart Tour pulled up to the start line on  iPhones and Android devices on Wednesday, bringing with it a pricey subscription option. The Gold Pass , which costs $4.99 a month, lets you access 200cc mode, extra in-game rewards for racing and exclusive bonus goals. It's also the same monthly price as Apple Arcade , which gives you access to a library of over 100 games, many of them exclusive.

You can give Mario Kart Tour's pass a go with a two-week free trial, after which you'll be charged the first $4.99 installment if you don't cancel. We can confirm that 200cc is blisteringly fast, much like it was in Mario Kart 8 , but it's not immediately clear if the other bonuses make a huge difference to the game.

The game apparently had a record-breaking launch day too. It was downloaded 10.1 million times  globally and took the No. 1 spot in the iOS App Store in 93 countries, data analyst Apptopia reported Thursday. Pokemon Go was the previous record holder, with about 6.7 million downloads at launch, it noted.

The racer includes city courses inspired by real-life locations. These rotate every two weeks. The first is inspired by New York -- it's basically New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey and is available until Oct. 9. You'll also be able to unlock Pauline from Donkey Kong and the dapper Musician Mario , along with a NY-themed cab kart and glider, during this time.

You unlock drivers, karts and gliders by using rubies, Mario Kart Tour's in-game currency, to fire a warp pipe -- this gets you a random reward. You can see the odds of getting specific unlocks in the menu, and rubies can be earned through gameplay or using real money. (It seems like you'll earn more if you have a Gold Pass too).

Mario Kart Tour is comparable to classic console Mario Karts, but it's hard to know how well the single-finger gameplay will hold your attention over time. You'll also need a Nintendo account to play.

However, it's currently missing a key part of the Mario Kart experience -- multiplayer. It's sitting in the game's menu, grayed out.

"Available in a future version update," the message reads when you tap on the icon.

The $4.99 subscription is pretty pricey when you stack it up against Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass . Nintendo Switch owners also have the option of that console's $20-a-year service , which gets you immediate access to a library of classic SNES games -- including the original  Super Mario Kart .

Mario kart tour is out now for android and ios devices.

The long-awaited mobile version of Mario Kart is finally available to play. Over a year after being announced, Nintendo's new mobile game is here.

A mobile version of Mario Kart has been in the works for quite some time. In fact, we reported on it way back at the start of last year.  Now the wait is finally over.

If you've been holding your breath with anticipation and are just dying to tear up the tracks firing off shells, grabbing boosts or just racing hard against your favourite Mario characters, then you're in for a treat.

Hopefully, it's well worth the wait after the initial delay that Nintendo said it needed to ensure the game was up to its usual standards.

The new game is available to download and play on both  Android  (4.4 or higher) and  iOS  (10.0 or higher) phones and tablets. Nintendo has also released this video explaining how the game works to help you out before you even dive in.

Highlights of this new mobile version of Mario Kart seemingly including a design that allows you to play one-handed on a phone, with simple presses enabling steering and drifting.

The "Tour" part means you'll also be travelling through several locations including classics like Rainbow Road, along with tracks based on major cities like Paris, Tokyo and New York.

The first two weeks of this tour are taking place in the Big Apple and you'll be able to unlock Musician Mario as well as Pauline from Super Mario Odyssey along the way.

Head over to the official site to find out more and get started today.

Nintendo emulators on the App Store are a far cry from the heady days of Miyamoto at an iPhone launch

Have Apple and Nintendo finally pressed ‘submit’ to the pent-up demand?

Shigeru Miyamoto at iPhone 7 event

Way back in 2016 at the iPhone 7 event, Tim Cook brought Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto out on the stage, and the audience lost their minds — myself included.

Back then, it had long been rumored that the Japanese game company was looking at bringing its main mascot Mario to smartphones. Some even wondered if the effort was going to be a port of an existing game.

Instead, it was Super Mario Run , a runner game that required the player to tap on an iPhone’s touch screen so Mario could hit blocks, jump on enemies, and more. Since debuting on September 8 that same year, and in 2017 for Android devices, the game has been downloaded over 300 million times. Other games would be released soon after, such as Fire Emblem Heroes , a role-playing game, and Mario Kart Tour , a spinoff of Nintendo’s popular racing series that features many of the company’s iconic characters.

Since then, however, Nintendo has eased off on releasing new mobile games, instead focusing on other aspects. Its Nintendo World theme park debuted at Universal Studios in 2022 for instance, and its Super Mario Bros Movie has grossed over $500 million since its release in 2023. Another movie adaptation based on The Legend of Zelda series is now in the works.

With Apple’s rule change on April 5, retro gaming emulators can now be made available to download on the App Store. Thanks to Delta , a multi-system emulator released on April 17, users can now technically play games from Nintendo’s past consoles and handheld systems.

This has essentially opened up the floodgates, and, one could argue, that Nintendo and Apple have both missed out on a huge opportunity.

Times have changed

Nintendo and Apple have always been similar to me. Both aim to create products and services that can delight and wonder, whilst thinking of its customers first. Both have also kept their plans close to their chest, revealing the latest games and products when they’ve felt ready to — not at the behest of shareholders or for the simple need to make money.

Indeed, the hype around Nintendo’s rumored successor to its hugely popular Switch console, allegedly launching in 2025, is at an all-time high. Fans wait with bated breath for its Nintendo Direct — online events that usually last for up to an hour, revealing its latest games and updates to existing services. Apple has had similar events too, announcing keynotes and products with no prior warning.

Yet they also share another aspect as of late — dropping the ball on emulation, which allows apps to behave like one or more gaming systems. Nintendo isn’t new to this, with its Virtual Console service, having allowed Wii players to purchase and play games from its past, being emulated versions.

Almost 18 months after the Switch console arrived in 2017, users have been able to play a bunch of NES games from its Switch Online service , which offers a monthly or annual subscription fee that, in 2024 lets players access hundreds of emulated retro games on the Nintendo Switch from Super Nintendo, SEGA Genesis, and Nintendo Game Boy, but it hasn’t been a smooth ride.

Times are-a-changin'

Homebrew game Dangan on Delta emulator for iPhone

When Nintendo 64 games first launched on the service in October 2021, the emulation performance was not good . Slowdown, wrong textures, and filtering problems were just some of the issues. Similar problems had plagued the other systems before, but it wasn’t as bad as the N64 games. It took the company a year for the games to be in a state where they looked as good as the original cartridge versions.

Nintendo, like Apple, is a company that always wants to move forward, to look ahead and see how it can surprise players time and again. Both have a rich history, yet both refuse to acknowledge it. Or if they do, like Nintendo’s Online service, it feels half-hearted.

The same applied when Miyamoto took to the stage in 2016 at the iPhone 7 event. Many were hopeful that we’d soon receive ports of existing Nintendo games. I remember thinking that, if the company brought out a service on the iPhone, featuring a bunch of its past games, which would only work with a controller, I’d be sold.

Instead, we got pay-to-play service games from Nintendo, and Apple consistently refused to allow emulators and different storefronts to be made available on the App Store. Thanks to the DMA ruling by the EU in March though, times are changing.

Emulators that were once thought to be impossible to download on the App Store are now here, like Delta. Others, such as Provenance, another multi-system emulator, confirmed to iMore that it’s coming to the iPhone as well . Users can now, at risk of breaching copyright law , play Super Mario 64 and many more of the plumber’s entries through Delta — and for free. Millions carry around an iPhone in their pocket, much like a Game Boy from back in the day, and they can now use this app, free of charge.

Now though, Nintendo and Apple have lost. From what originated as a partnership in 2016, both have now seemingly given in and let third-party developers do what they want with gaming emulators on the App Store. Yet the one winner here is the user, despite both companies dropping the emulation ball so badly — in a strange way — it’s worked out for the best.

Mario Kart Tour

Mario kart tour launching on iphone and android next month, nintendo announces.

Avatar for Chance Miller

Over a year and a half ago, Nintendo announced plans to bring Mario Kart Tour to the iPhone and Android. Now, the company has given the game an official release date, teasing that it will be available starting next month.

On Twitter this evening, Nintendo announced that Mario Kart Tour will launch for mobile devices on September 25 — less than a month away. Nintendo originally teased that Mario Kart Tour would launch by March of this year, but it clearly missed that goal by around six months.

Android users can preregister for Mario Kart Tour on the Google Play Store now . The iOS listing is also now live and allows users to preorder the free app . 9to5Google went hands-on with the beta earlier this year .

Other details about Mario Kart Tour for iPhone and Android remain unclear, but we should start to learn more over the coming weeks. Nintendo announced earlier this year that Mario Kart Tour will be free to try , much like Super Mario Run. However, you’ll likely need in-app purchases to make it past a certain level. According to the App Store listing, in-app purchases range from $1.99 to $69.99.

mario kart tour apple tv

At launch, Mario Kart Tour for iOS will be optimized for both iPhone and iPad, much like Super Mario Run. An Apple TV app would certainly be nice to have, but there’s no precedent for that actually happening.

The release of a Mario Kart game for iPhone and iPad has been a long time coming. Nintendo so far has released titles such as Super Mario Run and Dr. Mario World for iOS , but the release of Mario Kart has been highly anticipated.

Of note, iOS 13 adds support Xbox One S and PS4 Controllers , which should be very interesting for Mario Kart Tour gamers.

Are you excited for Mario Kart to finally come to iPhone? Any predictions for what the game might offer or how it will differ from its platform counterparts? Let us know in the comments. We’ll have more coverage of Mario Kart Tour for iPhone next month.

This App Turns Your iPhone Into a Game Boy for Pokémon and More

The popular Nintendo game emulator Delta by Riley Testut is now available in the App Store, and it essentially turns your iPhone into a Game Boy to relive classic games like Pokémon LeafGreen and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening .

Delta Emulator Pokemon Gen 3 Feature

You can even wirelessly stream games from your iPhone to your Apple TV with AirPlay.

Delta could already be sideloaded on the iPhone, but it launched in the App Store after Apple updated its guidelines to allow "retro game console emulator apps" earlier this month. Other emulators are expected to follow for PlayStation and more .

While it is easy to find classic Nintendo games (ROMs) on the internet, keep in mind that downloading them is illegal. While a U.S. court ruled that emulators are legal, downloading copyrighted ROMs is typically against the law in the country. On its customer support website for the U.S., Nintendo says that downloading pirated copies of its games is illegal. A wide collection of public-domain "homebrew" games are available to play legally.
