RAC ARENA, PERTH - Sunday 25 September

Due to unprecedented recent heavy rain and floods in the Swan Valley region, and forecast of further rain to come, Roundhouse Entertainment and Mellen Events are relocating the upcoming a day on the green event with MIDNIGHT OIL on Sunday September 25 at Swan Valley’s Nikola Estate to Perth’s RAC Arena.

The stellar line up of MIDNIGHT OIL with special guests GOANNA & STEPHEN PIGRAM remains unchanged.

The safety of our patrons, the bands and crew is paramount and organisers have made the decision to move the event indoors after thorough consultation with all stakeholders and experts in the field.

This decision has been made now to ensure ticketholders have reasonable notice to modify their plans.

All ticket holders will automatically be issued with a new ticket for the RAC Arena event via Ticketek. You will receive your new tickets by 5pm Monday 19 September 2022.

Patrons who are unable to attend the new venue can obtain a full refund from their authorised point of purchase.

Since MIDNIGHT OIL’s new album Resist debuted at number one this year, the legendary Australian band has toured Australia, North America and then Europe, on their last concert tour. The final leg of this epic run kicked off last month.

Don’t miss MIDNIGHT OIL’s final show in Western Australia on September 25 at Perth’s RAC Arena, with a very special rare appearance by fellow ’80s trailblazers GOANNA and acclaimed singer-songwriter STEPHEN PIGRAM .

People holding tickets from the postponed show in March 2022 - All tickets will automatically be valid for the new dates so no action is required by ticket holders . Refunds will be available from point of purchase for those who are unable to attend the rescheduled date.

In the 1980s,  GOANNA ’s debut album, Spirit of Place, helped forge a new Australian i In the 1980s, GOANNA’s debut album, Spirit of Place, helped forge a new Australian identity. The iconic Solid Rock stoked a fire for Indigenous rights that hasn’t gone out, while the anthemic Let The Franklin Flow was a call to arms for Australia’s emerging environmental movement. GOANNA released three studio albums: 1982’s Spirit of Place, 1985’s Oceania and 1998’s Spirit Returns. Soulful, lyrical, political, humane and brimming with musicality, originality and creative volatility, Australia has never produced a group like GOANNA, before or since. Forty years after their debut album, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, with special guests, are reliving those treasures, as they embark on a year of paying homage to the Goanna spirit again.    STEPHEN PIGRAM , a Yawuru singer/songwriter from Broome, is well known for his work with his musical brothers in the much-loved Pigram Brothers band. Stephen was also an important early pioneer of Aboriginal rock as a member of the influential ’80s bands Kuckles and Scrap Metal, and was musical director for the original production of the first Aboriginal musical - Jimmy Chi’s Bran Nue Dae. Stephen also produced (with brother Alan) and scored (with Alan and Alex Lloyd) the feature film Mad Bastards, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011. Now stepping out solo – armed with his guitar, ukulele, harmonica and stompbox – Stephen released Solfish in late 2021, a follow-up to his debut solo album, Wanderer.

Live Review: Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil Resist Tour – 25 September 2022 at the RAC Arena Perth

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere – Martin Luther King Jnr…The beds are burning…No more stolen land…No more stolen lives…Human Rights…Climate Crisis…Elders for the kids…Wake up and smell the bushfires…Code red…Always was, always will…Resists…People have the power to redeem…Stay strong…We are bush fire survivors…We have the solutions…Fight better for a better tomorrow…No price in genocide…End racism…Blacks Lives Matter…

Darkness turns into daylight. As the music takes control, he swings his arms as if shooing a horde of flies on a summer afternoon, while trotting across the stage and zig zagging erratically like a waltzing C3PO, greeting band members before settling in the middle under the spotlight. Unable to remain motionless, he flicks both wrists repeatedly, then progressing to bicep curls. As the rhythm section climaxes, the lanky singer sways both sides in a shivering disposition with arms to his sides, and added movement from the hip gyration of the sixty nine year old rocker. He then pulls an imaginary rope of hope, and through the art of wax on , wax off he wipes the greed of big corporations.

From a live observation, it seems that the whirling dervish choreography of Peter Garrett can be interpreted as a metaphorical take on chaos, catastrophe, and social infamy caused by the policy makers of our nation and corporations. Or perhaps…Peter just loves to dance.

It may also be a lugubrious spark to the night through a haunting rendition of We Resist , propped by documented montages and captions propagating the systemic issues of racism, climate change and the trickling effects of colonisation in Australia, but that’s the predicated channel given the thematically entrenched music of Midnight Oil, and the activism of the former lawyer and politician The Honourable Peter Garrett MP, AM. Their past macro activism includes wearing a black shirt tapered with “Sorry” during their performance at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics, beaming to over a billion viewers. To many Australians, it was a “controversial” display and an act of “defiance”, but it wouldn’t be Midnight Oil without the explosive exhibition, sprinkled with discomfort viewing to some. Tonight, the fans embraced the cultural revolution of a band that has sold more than 20 million albums.

Woodside Genocide – There is so much accumulating evidence that is edging towards unliveability, seriously because we continue to produce greenhouse gas emission, and burn fossil fuels and pretend that there’s no tomorrow…now whether you want to hear this or not at the corporate boxes where you are making a lot of money, you still have a moral responsibility to the future generations, which is more important than your responsibility to your shareholders…

From the second song onwards in Borderline the stage chemistry between Garrett and drummer Rob Hirst is entwined, exchanging nods and smiles, underlining mutual respect that was established early in the setlist. For international readers, think of Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins, or Vince and Tommy Lee.

Hirst is a beast of a drummer, a master practitioner with a ferocity propagated to the upper reaches of the RAC Arena.  Hurst’s drumming style is key to playing a prominent role in the band’s messages, who seems to curate his art accordingly, not just displaying his personal repertoire. He fuses his drumming persona into the band while still emanated his individual brilliance, alongside guitarist and keyboardist Jim Moginie and guitarist Martin Rotsey and the touring bass player Adam Ventoura, forming an air tight outfit on a stage with minimal props, consisting only a water tank and a zinc sheet, thus void of any pompous pyrotechnics. The tribute flowed earlier for former bass player Bones Hilman who passed away in 2020.

The fans were relatively “young” (below 50) and is mainly attributed to the raw and aggression of the band, void of individual egos despite Garrett being the centrepiece, possessed by Hirst’s instrument. Hirst is dubbed by many as the country’s best drummer, yet the solo only went for under a minute, which highlighted Midnight Oil as a band with a mission, rather than portraying the repertoires of individuals.

Just like in the Sydney Olympics, Garrett also relayed their message with caption on several shirt changes, “I Stand with Ukraine” and “Woodside = Climate Wreckers”. Qantas was also on the receiving end, namely their CEO on behalf of the unions. Messages were beamed throughout the night on LCD screens with confronting images of issues concerning the planet.

Why is Woodside this company wanting to produce so much poisonous gas (Scarborough Gas Plant) which will built the temperature problems of the climate crisis …it is corporate and moral cultural crime they are committing.

In all, Midnight Oil transcends music and thrive into activism through the theoretic of alternative rock. The brilliance of the musicianship led by an eccentric leader before 12,000 fans is the perfect platform for any message propagation. The passion and the conviction were translated in the vocal delivery of Peter Garrett and he was on point throughout the night.

For the casual listeners who haven’t ventured beyond the commercial side Midnight Oil, the final 30 minutes was the highlight, with Power and the Passion , Blue Sky Mine , King of the Mountain , Beds are Burning , and Forgotten Years performed consecutively with the backup vocals chanted by the capacity crowd, echoing the household lyrics and the anthemic tracks of Australian music. Perhaps the tracks were listed accordingly for fans to focus on the sonic and visual presentation in the first ninety minutes, rather than sparking a premature delirium with unbridled chaos and revelry.

Regardless of the reason, those songs expelled a spirited chants, festering from anger, rage, anxiety from the early display and performances, culminating into hope and celebration, inspiring the climate change deniers and those who are stoic on racism and human rights into boarding the Midnight train. For those who are already on board, it was a serving reminder to fight harder for our future generation.

And for that, Midnight Oil have accomplished their mission – for tonight.

Midnight Oil announce 2022 Australia tour in support of new album ‘Resist’

Nearly five years ago the legendary Midnight Oil returned with a sweat drenched pub gig at Selinas, now the latest chapter of their iconic career will come to an end with the release of a new album and huge final tour around the country in 2022.

Their forthcoming album, titled Resist, marks album number 13 for the band and follows on from 2020’s The Makarrata Project – which was the band’s first new music in almost two decades and features the voices of an incredible array of established and emerging Indigenous musicians including Jessica Mauboy, Dan Sultan, Alice Skye, Kev Carmody, and the late Gurrumul.

As well as taking over stages in major capital cities, on their forthcoming tour Midnight Oil will also perform a run of unforgettable a day on the green shows at some of Australia’s most beautiful wineries.

Midnight Oil - Rising Seas (Official Video)

Midnight Oil’s new album Resist is a fitting statement for a band whose clarion call has always been “it’s better to die on your feet than live on your knees”. As the title makes abundantly clear,  Resist  engages with the issues of today, like lead single ‘Rising Seas’ which tackles the climate crisis in typically uncompromising fashion. 

The tour will see Midnight Oil performing classic songs from across their four-decade long career, while also showcasing tracks from their new album live for the first time.

Get to know Ticketmaster’s Smart Queue

If you aren’t familiar with Smart Queue , it is Ticketmaster’s way of creating a clear and fair process for thousands of fans to buy tickets in a short space of time. Midnight Oil move Nikola Estate in Swan Valley gig to RAC Arena because of wet weather

Aussie rock legends Midnight Oil have relocated their Nikola Estate concert on September 25 to RAC Arena after Perth’s run of wet weather.

The band announced on Wednesday morning that their Resist — The Final Tour gig slated for the Swan Valley venue had been moved after unprecedented heavy rain and floods, with more wet weather forecast.

“The safety of our patrons, the bands and crew is paramount and organisers have made the decision to move the event indoors after thorough consultation with all stakeholders and experts in the field,” a statement from organisers said.

“This decision has been made now to ensure ticketholders have reasonable notice to modify their plans.”

Ticketholders are expected to receive their new seat allocations by 5pm on Monday, September 19.

Those unable to make the concert because of the relocation will be offered a refund, which must be submitted before 5pm on Tuesday, September 20.

Midnight Oil have said that the Resist tour would be their last, though it did “not mean the end of the Oils”.

Each of the members will continue doing their own projects and the band remains open to recording new music together.

Midnight Oil were formed in the 1970s and shot to fame in the 1980s, with their 1987 album Diesel and Dust giving them worldwide recognition.

The band has wo 11 ARIA Awards and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006.

‘10-1’ album to be played in its entirety in Sydney and Melbourne Since Midnight Oil’s new album Resist debuted at #1 early this year, the legendary Australian band has toured around Australia, North America, and then Europe, on their last concert tour. The final leg of this epic run kicks off this week at the Mundi Mundi Bash near Broken Hill followed by rescheduled gigs in Cairns, Darwin, New Zealand, Perth and Canberra to make up for various climate and Covid disruptions earlier this year. In addition, this final leg will include shows at Broome’s Stompem Ground Festival (after a 20 year hiatus) and a new WA gig in Busselton (see below for all details).

Today, the last four dates of this tour were revealed with Midnight Oil announcing two uniquely intimate extra shows in both Melbourne and Sydney. A portion of proceeds from each of these new gigs will be donated to environmental and Indigenous causes and general public tickets will go on sale 10am local time on Monday 22 August via: frontiertouring.com/midnightoil

Melbourne will finally experience Midnight Oil playing their classic album 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 in its entirety at the Palais Theatre on Monday September 12 under the banner “One For The Planet”. The band had originally announced this special idea for a benefit show back in March, but Covid got in the way so, like their other cancelled gigs, they are now making good on that earlier promise.

Two nights later, on Wednesday September 14, the Oils will play a final show at the Palais under the banner “One For The Road”. This extra Melbourne date will see the band performing the entire show (ie: no support) and delivering an extended set that will include classics from every Midnight Oil album and EP across their storied career.

Sydney will experience these same two special shows a few weeks later, as “RESIST: The Final Tour” ends with a bang back in the band’s hometown. “One For The Planet” (featuring “10-1” in its entirety) will be staged at the Luna Park Big Top on Wednesday September 28. Then “One For The Road” (an extended concert including classics from every album and EP) will celebrate the end of Midnight Oil’s touring career on the Labour Day public holiday – Monday October 3 – at the famous Hordern Pavilion where the band staged some of their most memorable Sydney gigs back in the day.

“The shows we’ve just done overseas have been some of the best and most enjoyable of our career”, said Midnight Oil guitarist/keyboardist, Jim Moginie. “Every gig on this last tour has had extra emotion around it so we’re looking forward to bringing those feelings back home again.”

“We’ve always supported causes that we believe are important during our tours so these four extra gigs are partly a way of doing that”, explains frontman, Peter Garrett. “They will allow the band and the audience to have a different experience each night by digging deep into the back catalogue in venues that are a bit smaller than the ones we’ve usually been playing in over recent years.”

“From the opening track on our first album through to the last song on our new one, we’ve always been blessed to have fans who are really passionate about what we do”, observed drummer Rob Hirst. “One For The Planet” and “One For The Road” are our way of acknowledging that connection over 45 years. We’ve all shared an amazing journey together, so we want to celebrate that by playing something for everyone in places that feel special”.

Peter Garrett may be getting older, but his dancing never gets old; and neither do the songs of Midnight Oil, or their power and passion.

Unfairly pegged as Aussie pub rock historically, due to their era and popularity, what the Oils really specialise in is discomforting activism and discordant post-punk. Like former Joy Division contemporary Ian Curtis, Garrett’s jagged, unique movements are off-kilter and unusual, but just try and take your eyes away.

Stephen Pigram of Pigram Brothers had the honour of opening and early arrivals were treated to a moving start to the night. “Last time I was in this area was around 1987, and there was another building sitting here,” he said, referring to the old Perth Entertainment Centre (given the age demographic of the crowd on Sunday, many would remember it well).

Amongst his popular  Mad Bastards -related fare like  Crocodile River (featuring Ben Cousins’ inspired hook, “Such is life”), there was room for more tender moments allowing sideman Lucky Oceans’ lap and pedal steel guitars to shine ethereally. Flanked by his grandson on the other side adding lead guitar and sweet backing vocals, Pigram finished on lyrical highlight Johnny Walker’s Shoes , memorably singing “I bet your weekly wage could pay my ransom” to a room full of boomers who, frankly, looked the part.

Fresh from the AFL grand final the day before, Goanna  up next were also a treat. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of legendary 1982 protest album Spirit of Place , they came out swinging with their second biggest hit, Razor’s Edge . Marcia Howard’s voice shone spectacularly on Song for East Timor , while Rose Bygrave was similarly powerful on activist anthem, Stand Yr’ Ground .

Shane Howard’s tour de force Solid Rock is still as potent as ever – and its regular airplay suggests at 40-years old it’ll never be out of time. But  Children of the Southern Land was the unexpected, barnstorming highlight, its closing hook reminding us that, long before the Oils sang “It belongs to them, we’ve got to give it back” on  Beds Are Burning , there was another bunch of Aussie activists singing “give it back.”

Midnight Oil  have long been famed for their live shows, and in what has been billed as their final ever Perth performance, we got a reminder of why. Perhaps lacking the perfect setlist of their last visit here in 2017 , it was nonetheless a chance to witness songs from new album Resist in the live setting, and they opened with that record’s title–and best-track,  We Resist , first up. Back on the Borderline and Don’t Wanna Be the One  soon raised the energy levels, and as well as introducing us to Perth’s own WAAPA graduate Adam Ventoura on bass, Garrett acknowledged the loss of great mate and former bassist Bones Hillman, who passed in 2020.

Put Down that Weapon was a chance for Garrett to reveal his “I Stand With Ukraine” t-shirt, and do his first politicising for the night. Leaving the Labor Party has only allowed him to speak his mind more freely, and he was in fine form, railing on the monarchy in a spirited take down of King Charles, tearing QANTAS boss Alan Joyce a new one for putting profits ahead of workers, and most memorably, giving WA audiences a piece of his mind when it comes to Woodside and their infamous disregard for the environment. “Whether you want to hear this or not in the corporate boxes…” Garrett began to cheers from the crowd. From there, he launched into a passionate speech and video montage set to wild instrumental Eye Contact , in a moment no one in attendance will forget soon. Polarising, divisive and using their platform as they saw fit, this was activist Oils at their best, as powerful imagery urged us to choose “Whales not Woodside.”

Now clad in a Woodside = Climate Wreckers t-shirt, Garrett busted out some high energy shapes during a huge trio of rockers to follow.  Only the Strong and Redneck Wonderland were only upstaged by horn-laden Best of Both Worlds , in one of the night’s most memorable moments.

Famed for saving the best till last, the five songs leading to the encore were nothing short of spectacular. The Dead Heart utilised spectacular visuals of Uluru under shooting stars and the Milky Way, before Blue Sky Mining had Garrett belting out harmonica from the drum riser, and found the crowd in fine voice. That continued into The Power and the Passion , featuring drummer Rob Hirst embarking on his customary drum solo hitting up the corrugated iron silo next to him, in a further nod to their raucous industrial and post-punk roots. They were on a roll and there was no stopping between songs;  Beds Are Burning came next, and was arguably track of the night, as it is arguably the greatest ever Australian anthem.

“We’re serious about what we say,” Garrett said to close the main set – as if we needed a reminder. “Make a change and make it happen.” With that they burst into Forgotten Years , then left us cheering for more.

The three song encore frankly could’ve done with an extra 30 minutes, and the list of M.I.A. favourites was large (notably headlined by  Short Memory ). But they gave us recent single Rising Sea complete with a stunning visual show, and a technically plagued King of the Mountain  was still a huge singalong moment. The eventual finale left us ecstatic: Hercules ‘ soaring coda “This is something I will remember!” was performed with a sense of victory and a hint of sadness, in an emotional send off for one of Australia’s greatest ever bands.

Midnight Oil have announced some exceptional guests will be joining them at their upcoming Perth show.

The a day on the green event at Nikola Estate, Swan Valley on Saturday 26 March will feature a rare reunion appearance by fellow 1980s trailblazers, Goanna, as well as acclaimed singer-songwriter Stephen Pigram.

The Oil’s tour kick off with sold-out gigs in Newcastle and Wollongong, shortly after the band’s new album  Resist  is released on 18 February. When announcing the dates last November the Oils revealed this would be their last concert tour.

The band’s first tour was in 1975, so they’ve been playing live shows for a really long time. Their upcoming record will be the 13th of their long career. Their discography is packed with hit songs including  Us Forces, Power and the Passion, The Dead Heart, Beds Are Burning, Blue Sky Mine, Truganini, Forgotten Years,  and many more.

In the 1980s, Goanna’s debut album, Spirit of Place , helped forge a new Australian identity. The iconic tune  Solid Rock stoked a fire for Indigenous rights that hasn’t gone out, while the anthemic Let The Franklin Flow was a call to arms for Australia’s emerging environmental movement.

Goanna released three studio albums: 1982’s Spirit of Place , 1985’s Oceania and 1998’s Spirit Returns . Forty years after their debut album, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, with special guests, are reliving those treasures.

Stephen Pigram, a Yawuru singer/songwriter from Broome, is well known for his work with his musical brothers in the much-loved Pigram Brothers band. Stephen was also an important early pioneer of Aboriginal rock as a member of the influential ’80s bands Kuckles and Scrap Metal, and was musical director for the original production of the first Aboriginal musical – Jimmy Chi’s Bran Nue Dae .

Midnight Oil Confirm Final Tour and New Album

Veteran Australian group Midnight Oil have announced that their forthcoming tour in support of a new album,  Resist , will be their farewell road trip.

Their 15th LP, which deals with ecological issues, is to be released early next year, with tour  dates across Australia and New Zealand set to take place between Jan. 23 and May 13. A music video for the record's lead song, “Rising Seas,” can be viewed below, along with a complete track listing.

“We all know time refuses to stand still for anyone,” vocalist Peter Garrett said in a statement. “[B]ut after many years together the band’s spirit is deep, the music and words are strong, and our ideas and actions as bold as we can make them. We’ve reached people in ways we never could have imagined. Our desire to create and speak out is undimmed.” He continued: “We hope everyone who hears this album and gets to one of the shows will come away charged up about the planet’s future, saying, ‘Why stop now?’ Having always tackled every tour like it’s the last, this time it actually will be.”

Guitarist Jim Moginie noted: “These will be sad and beautiful gigs but luckily we’re still capable of blowing the roof off any stage, and that’s what we intend to do… We stand as one, dependent on each other and grateful in all the important ways that make great bands great.” Fellow guitarist Martin Rotsey added: “A huge thank you to all our fans around the world. We’ve shared so much together from the swelter of Sydney pubs to magical nights under starry skies. Your energy took us further than we could ever have dreamed.”

The band – whose late bassist Bones Hillman is heard on Resist – said it's possible they could continue working as a group. “Each of the members will continue their own projects over the years ahead,” they reported. “They remain very open to recording new music together in future and supporting causes in which they believe.”

Midnight Oil formed in 1972 and found global success in the mid ‘80s, garnering a reputation for political activism. They initially split in 2002 but reunited briefly in 2005 and 2009 before returning in full force in 2016. Garrett was a senior minister in the Australian government between 2007 and 2013 after first being elected to the House of Representatives in 2004.

Today, the last four dates of this tour were revealed with Midnight Oil announcing two uniquely intimate extra shows in both Melbourne and Sydney. A portion of proceeds from each of these new gigs will be donated to environmental and Indigenous causes and general public tickets will go on sale 10am local time on Monday 22 August via: frontiertouring.com/midnightoil

Melbourne will finally experience Midnight Oil playing their classic album 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 in its entirety at the Palais Theatre on Monday September 12 under the banner "One For The Planet". The band had originally announced this special idea for a benefit show back in March, but Covid got in the way so, like their other cancelled gigs, they are now making good on that earlier promise.

Two nights later, on Wednesday September 14, the Oils will play a final show at the Palais under the banner "One For The Road". This extra Melbourne date will see the band performing the entire show (ie: no support) and delivering an extended set that will include classics from every Midnight Oil album and EP across their storied career.

Sydney will experience these same two special shows a few weeks later, as "RESIST: The Final Tour" ends with a bang back in the band's hometown. "One For The Planet" (featuring "10-1" in its entirety) will be staged at the Luna Park Big Top on Wednesday September 28. Then "One For The Road" (an extended concert including classics from every album and EP) will celebrate the end of Midnight Oil's touring career on the Labour Day public holiday - Monday October 3 - at the famous Hordern Pavilion where the band staged some of their most memorable Sydney gigs back in the day.

"The shows we've just done overseas have been some of the best and most enjoyable of our career", said Midnight Oil guitarist/keyboardist, Jim Moginie. "Every gig on this last tour has had extra emotion around it so we're looking forward to bringing those feelings back home again."

"We've always supported causes that we believe are important during our tours so these four extra gigs are partly a way of doing that", explains frontman, Peter Garrett. "They will allow the band and the audience to have a different experience each night by digging deep into the back catalogue in venues that are a bit smaller than the ones we've usually been playing in over recent years."

"From the opening track on our first album through to the last song on our new one, we've always been blessed to have fans who are really passionate about what we do", observed drummer Rob Hirst. "One For The Planet" and "One For The Road" are our way of acknowledging that connection over 45 years. We've all shared an amazing journey together, so we want to celebrate that by playing something for everyone in places that feel special".

Australian rock band Midnight Oil — known affectionately as “The Oils” — are supporting their latest release, Resist , with what is said to be the band’s final tour together, performing new material from the album across three continents.

The Resist tour kicked off June 1 at Vancouver, BC’s Malkin Bowl and headed across North America, ending at Oxon Hill, MD June 25, before making a quick transoceanic jump to Brussels on June 29. They eventually wrapped the European segment in Carhaix, France on July 16 before heading home for the final leg of Australian/New Zealand dates in August and September.

Starting with their self-titled debut in 1978, the band has not let up on its live show intensity and has a strong fan base worldwide. The sound supplier on the Australian shows is JPJ Productions (Clair AU) with a full L-Acoustics rig. For the North American dates, the production relied on venue-supplied P.A., with Clair Global handling the front-end and monitor needs. We spoke to the band’s audio engineering team — Colin Ellis at FOH, Paul “Kenno” Kennedy at monitors and monitor tech Kellie McKee.

Colin Ellis FOH Engineer

Colin Ellis is an Australian sound engineer, having mixed live shows for over 40 years, mainly Australian rock bands. Starting in 1979 with INXS, Ellis says he was fortunate enough to do all their world touring until 1992. “Since then, I have worked with many Australian and international bands, touring the world,” says Ellis. “I worked for Midnight Oil from about 1993 to roughly 1996 — really only about three or four years — then returned with them circa 2010, when they started doing some one-offs and benefit stadium shows like Wave Aid and Bushfire Relief. I came back mainly because their manager said of all the bands’ engineers, I was the best they had. I’ve done all the band’s tours since then.”

Ellis has used many consoles over the years, usually a Midas Heritage or XL3 or XL4 in the mid 90’s with the Oils, which he loved, adding that the Oils — with great source sounds from the stage — were a good band to mix if you had to dial up a fresh console at a festival in a hurry. “That, and their two guitars have great clarity and a lot of interplay between them, without running over the top of each other or the usual ‘guitar carpet’ muddiness which seems to be popular with younger guitar players.”

When digital consoles arrived, Ellis moved on to the Avid Profile. It had a massive learning curve, but he was wowed by the miracle of saving, storing and then recalling a show. “Unfortunately, the sonic quality I enjoyed with the Midas analog boards was gone. So like a lot of engineers, I started adding plug-ins in an attempt to get back the sound I was missing. After adding 50 or so plug-ins, and many hours of frustration and expense — but also joy and learning — I finally thought I was getting somewhere. But latency was the new menace, causing lots of smearing of the overall sound. Finally in the nick of time, the Avid S6L arrived. I jumped straight on it, and haven’t looked back since. All the plug-ins I was running on the Profile would not easily go over to the S6L, but the console sounded so good without them. To this day, I have not missed them. I use about four of the factory in-built plugs and that’s it!”

An admitted old-school engineer, Ellis tries to keep things simple and mixes the show as a straightforward rock show without snapshots, etc. “I probably spend more time on ensuring the P.A. sounds right for me and do a lot of graphic and parametric tuning on channels, groups and mains, etc. I believe this is probably a holdover from the good (bad) old days when a P.A. speaker system sounded terrible out of the box and the best engineer was the one who could EQ it to at least make it sound usable.” Ellis adds, “Mixing the band can be challenging, but ultimately rewarding, with a range of musical diversity — i.e., one song could be a low-key ballad and the next song full-tilt mayhem and anywhere in between. Every song can feel like a ‘seat of the pants’ remix, so there’s never a dull moment.”

In Australia, The Oils are a JPJ Productions’ “Clair” client who has looked after the band for over 30 years. “They’ve been very good to us,” says Ellis. “We’ll use L-Acoustics K1, K2 systems, with 12 K1 and six K2 per side for main hangs and 12 K2 per side for side hangs, KS28 Subs, Kara front fills, V-DOSC delays. But configurations vary with different venues. I like to use flown subs as much as possible. All line array systems have their own unique sound and are good in their own way. d&b audiotechnik’s GSL and KSL are amazing systems; however, at present there is not enough of it in Australia to make it viable for us. I used a Bose ShowMatch system once that I thought was the best sounding P.A. I have ever used.”

Paul “Kenno” Kennedy is mixing on a DiGiCo SD5 (his favorite console), primarily because he’s been using the SD5 for quite a while and finds it’s easy to navigate. “All the layers are easy to customize and access. The macros are right there above the master section. The activity of your dynamics are in view on the meter bridge. It’s very comfortable to mix on.”

Kennedy doesn’t use any plug-ins, and never has. “I am an old-school monitor engineer who tries to reflect what the band is doing to keep them on the same page, not trying to produce something that’s not really there. I sometimes insert FX and graphics EQs over channels so as not to use loads of aux sends. Typically though, I would insert reverbs over things like brass instruments, backing vocals and graphic EQ’s over acoustic guitars. On this show, I inserted a de-esser on the bass, as it can get a little ‘clack’ when he really lays into it. It seems to be working well.”

Mics are pretty standard, he notes. Vocalist Peter Garrett uses a Shure Beta58 mic on a UR4D wireless system. “We have tried a couple of different mic caps, but always come back to the Beta 58 — Peter prefers that sound over others. We’re using sE Electronics V7 caps on a Shure AD4Q-A system for background vocals. The band has JH Audio JH16 IEMs running on Shure PSM1000 hardware — a fairly standard, but very effective combination.”

The band also uses downstage wedges, with one Clair CM22 each. “The reasoning for this is twofold,” says Kennedy. “Primarily as a backup in case of IEM breakdowns (which are very rare). Bass player Adam Ventoura has kick and bass to give his ear mix a little extra oomph, and Jim Moginie has his keys in his wedge as he sometimes likes to pull one ear out to listen to his guitar rig, so if he plays keys with one ear out, they are in the wedge. The second reason is that drummer Rob Hirst comes downstage to play a ‘cocktail’ kit for a few songs. Rob is the only one in the band who doesn’t use IEM’s. So he needs monitoring downstage. At his kit, he has three L-Acoustics Karas atop two SB18 subs. A nice little drum monitor. Since 2017, I’ve never used side fill with this band. We tried it in rehearsal but found they messed too much with the IEM mixes.”

Kennedy uses a mix of mics for drums. “A Sennheiser 901/902 combo on kick gives a nice tight sound,” he says. “I use Sennheiser e904s on the toms. On snares, it’s a Beta 57A on the top, for a bright sound (plus it’s hard to break if it’s hit), with a SM57 on the bottom, and on the second snare, a Shure Beta 98AMP miked underneath. KSM137 are on hi-hat and overheads. As for backline, it’s an e906 and a KSM32 on Martin’s guitar amps, Beta 56 for miked bass amp mic and an e906 and Beta 58 (yes, a 58) on Jim’s guitar amps. During rehearsal one day, we were short of mics, so I threw a Beta 58 on Jim’s Vox AC30 — it’s been that way since and seems to work with that amp.”

Kellie McKee Monitor Tech

Monitor tech Kellie McKee has been working fulltime with JPJ Audio for 12 years. If she’s not out on tour — which is a large portion of the year — or doing local gigs in Sydney, she works in the factory prepping and de-prepping gigs. “Some years I could do up to 10 different tours with local and international acts in Australia as they are normally quite short tours,” she explains. “This is my first time touring overseas in the States and Europe, and it’s a great opportunity, especially with a band like Midnight Oil. This is my third tour with them.”

McKee starts her day with getting all the gear off the truck, on stage and building monitor world with Kenno, cabling up monitor world and running the FOH snake. “I then get the wedges out downstage, build the drum fill, run in all the stage looms and mic-up the stage with help from the local venue crew. Kenno looks after all the RF. During our changeover, I help with the line check, make sure it’s working without issues and we pink out all the wedges and drum fill.”

During the show, McKee makes sure everything works, and if something goes down, she’s there to fix it. ”Also, I’m keeping an eye onstage during the set to see if anybody needs something else in their mix. Kenno is all over it though! I take care of setting up Rob’s cocktail drum kit and mic later in the band’s acoustic set. I’ve done multiple tours with Kenno and the band and it’s always great being able to tour with him. I know how he likes things set up and we work together to achieve that. It’s always interesting getting a new audio package from different countries, but we try to duplicate the same gear and setup in monitor world wherever we travel.”
