Plan The Best Seven-Night European Cruises From Venice

Begin or end your cruise in stunning venice.

Venice, Italy Rio Marin Canal

Take A Mini Cruise To Burano And Murano

W hen in Venice, you don't have to travel far from St. Mark's Square to have an adventure. One of my favorite ways to shake up an ordinary Venice trip is to set my GPS for Fondamente Nove pier, where "vaporetto" — water taxis — depart for several secondary islands in the Venetian Lagoon. My first stop is always Burano, a small place that packs an outsized travel punch.

Venice, Italy Canals and Gondolas

The first thing you'll notice about Burano as you're walking along its canals is how colorful the houses are here. This aspect is what makes it one of my favorite Venice excursions. Beyond snapping selfies in front of whichever buildings match the outfit you're wearing, you can explore the 7th-century Torcello Basilica, learn about the history of Burano lacemaking at a small but informative museum and have lunch waterside. All of Venice's best specialties are on offer, including my personal favorite, spaghetti al nero di seppia — black spaghetti with squid ink.

From here, board any Venice-bound vaporetto, all of which stop at Murano on the way back. Although its name sounds similar to Burano's, there are some key differences. While Murano, too, has canals, its architecture is a bit more muted in tone and resembles what you'd find in Venice more closely than it does Burano.

Venice, Italy Glass art

Murano is also home to an important crafting tradition: glassmaking. Now, if you're getting ready to embark on a cruise from Venice to Greece , the idea of buying fragile souvenirs might not appeal to you, and I have two things to say about that. First, you don't have to buy anything here. You can pay a few euros to support the shop owners and, in exchange, watch the fascinating glassmaking process, bringing home photos and videos as your primary keepsakes.

Second, most shops can ship gifts all the way home and wrap them to make sure they survive the journey. This is nice even if you'll be heading directly home after your time day-tripping from Venice. The fewer items you have to pack when traveling, the better — particularly if they're something fragile such as a box full of Murano glass. The hardest part about this is limiting yourself to just a few pieces. You'll want to buy them all!

Visit Romeo And Juliet's Hometown

Bronze statue of Juliet and balcony by Juliet house, Verona, Italy. Casa di Giulietta is nothing more than a romantic fantasy. Romeo and Juliet never lived in Verona, Italy. Architecture of Italy.

One reason I love exploring Italy so much is that every Italian city has its own story and cast of characters. In the case of Verona (which is located about 90 minutes from Venice via trains that depart at least twice an hour) this is literally true. Verona was the setting of "Romeo and Juliet," a love story so famous I don't think it needs any introduction.

Visiting Juliet's Balcony itself and the charming courtyard it looks out over would be an alluring destination even without such a famous literary history. Like many of the Italian cities you'll have visited on your seven-night Europe cruise, Città Antica is full of storied architecture, including the Torre dei Lamberti bell tower and Iglesia de Santa Anastasia.

Ancient amphitheater Arena di Verona. Italy.

Of course, Verona's culinary world is something to be explored on cruises of Italy. While you can enjoy more typical Italian pasta and pizza offerings throughout Verona's old town, you also owe it to yourself to try the city's most famous dish, risotto con tastasal. Flavored and thickened with tastasal — a minced pork heavily seasoned with salt and pepper — this hearty rice dish will make you fall in love with Verona.

Another of my favorite ways to appreciate the beauty of Verona is to ascend to Castel San Pietro — and not just to explore its Romanesque interior. The view of Verona rising above the aqua-green waters of the Adige River is postcard-perfect and is particularly great to enjoy after exploring the city's narrow streets for yourself. Afterward, you can head back down, cross over Ponte Nuovo Bridge and reward yourself with an aperitivo. I love a Campari spritz, but your mileage may vary.

If you want to enjoy another body of water after being out at sea on cruises from Venice, you can take a second local train from Verona to Lake Garda. Enjoy an afternoon in the peninsular town of Sirmione, which juts nearly a mile out into the lake and provides an amazing view of the mountains rising behind its waters. Or, rent a car (either in Verona or back in Venice) and move toward the horizon instead of just gazing at it.

Do A Dolomites Road Trip

Famous alpine place of the world, Santa Maddalena village with magical Dolomites mountains in background, Val di Funes valley, Trentino Alto Adige region, Italy, Europe

The Dolomites are one of the most accessible and interesting parts of the Italian Alps. Well, they're technically Italian. In fact, the storybook villages that dot the twisty roads winding through their foothills are arguably as Austrian in appearance (and sometimes in cuisine, culture and language) as they are Italian. But that makes this pan-European region, known as South Tyrol, all the more exciting to explore.

Unless you decide to stay in a smaller town or village, you'll probably set your GPS for Cortina d'Ampezzo, the hub of the Dolomites — and host city of the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics — which is just two hours from Venice by car. The hand-carved wooden balconies, inviting eateries or friendly locals will be sure to charm you.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo is the most recognizable landscape of the Dolomites. Named for the fact that it appears to be three chimneys, this towering landform boasts relatively easy trails that encircle its base. Or, if you're more adventurous, climb high above it to take in stunning views. However, the parking lot fills up fast, so plan your free days accordingly before or after your seven-night western Mediterranean cruise  — you'll ideally come here first thing in the morning.

Travelers couple look at the mountain lake. Travel and active life concept with team. Adventure and travel in the mountains region in Dolomite alps, Italy

Next, make a beeline for Lake Sorapis, whose sapphire waters collect in a bowl-shaped reservoir at the bottom of several glacier-topped peaks located roughly halfway between Tre Cime and the center of Cortina. The two-hour hike here isn't especially difficult, but it can be harrowing at times with only a narrow railing separating you from the valley below. My advice? Hang on tight if you need to, walk as far from the edge as possible, and don't think too much about it. Literally hundreds of people hike this trail every day.

Now, even if you decide not to drive all the way into the more Austrian part of South Tyrol to photograph the iconic Church of St. John in the Val di Funes, don't be fooled: When it comes to day trips from Venice, the Dolomites may call for a little more time. In order to enjoy this part of Italy, you really need to spend at least a night here, even though you could technically drive to Cortina and back in a single day with a few hours to spare. This would make a perfect two- to three-day add-on after your cruise ship brings you back to Venice!

See Why Everyone's Talking About Slovenia

Slovenia Koper Town Coast

Thanks to Italy's impressive high-speed train network, you could theoretically use Venice for a jumping-off point to anywhere in the country. Alternatively, you can board a bus bound for Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, Italy's underrated neighbor. Depending on how long you have here, you can potentially see the entire country in one go.

I usually like to base myself in the capital the entire time. This way, I can spend a day or two exploring Ljubljana, whether I'm looking down on the city from medieval Ljubljana Castle or strolling (and dining alfresco) along the Ljubljanica River and the fairy tale buildings that line either side of it.

At this point, I head for the hills — or mountains, more accurately. Slovenia's Julian Alps are an oft-overlooked part of Europe's most-famous mountain range, but one of my favorites regardless. First up on the itinerary is Lake Bled, whose electric blue waters surround an island church you can rent a canoe and paddle to. Or, as is the case back in Ljubljana, you can ascend Bled Castle and take the whole scene in from a bird's-eye view.

Ljubljana Landmark - Tromostovje in the city center, Slovenia

A second lake, Bohinj, features clearer waters than Bled and doesn't have any landmarks as obvious as Bled Church, but it is nonetheless refreshing, especially during the summer. It's also usually pretty calm on the tourist front. Part of what makes Slovenia one of my favorite Venice excursions is that it's an authentic, low-key destination where most of the other people you encounter are local Slovenians.

If you have more than a couple of days to spare, you could also head to Slovenia's own short but beautiful coastline. The town of Piran, in particular, is amazing, and from some vantage points almost seems like a lost Italian port. If admiring its terracotta roof tiles from various viewpoints doesn't unlock your inner photographer, head down to its quiet, understated rock beaches where many sun worshipers will have set up their own umbrellas and laid down their own towels.

A mini cruise is ideal if you are not yet sure whether a longer cruise is right for you and it is an opportunity to do as much as you can in a short amount of time. Mini cruises may be short (about 3-5 days), but they offer all the same perks as a longer itinerary, so you don’t need to worry about missing out on that grand cruise ship experience.

mini cruise venice

Starting at the harbour you then sail (usually at night) towards the destination. During the day you stop at interesting ports in between and have enough time there for sightseeing, shopping or culinary delights.

Although these trips are much shorter, usually about 3 or 4 days , than on a normal trip, you still have all the amenities such as restaurants, bars, entertainment programs, sports activities and much more available.

Usually short Mediterranean cruises are planned in spring or autumn . One of the most popular cruise is the one departing from Savona. This three-destination cruise is a picnic of sun-dappled destinations. You’ll board the ship in fashionable Savona for a three-night voyage; taking in historic sights, incredible fresh-food markets and world-class shopping.

Calling first at Christopher Columbus’ old stomping ground in Savona, you’ll then continue onto the thriving cosmopolitan hub of cultural Barcelona, with its spectacular architecture and fresh food stalls. You’ll then head west to classy Marseille to suss out some boutique shops before returning to medieval Savona.

Where can I go on a Mediterranean mini cruise?

These short cruises, departing from Italy, are focused on France and Spain with Barcelona, home to Gaudi’s stunning architecture, sometimes a departure port. Four-night itineraries can include Palma on Spain’s Balearic island of Mallorca, but even the shortest trips include Marseille, over the border in France and the gateway to Provence. For the Eastern Mediterranean, short cruises depart from Venice and they are focused on Croatia with Dubrovnik or Split and on Montenegro.

If you’re ready to book one of these short cruises and embark on a relaxing and fun-filled getaway, visit Costa Cruises to choose your itinerary , pick your stateroom, and start planning all the fun activities you’ll do while in port and on the ship, Booking Here

Top 10 Tips For Mediterranean Mini Cruises

Check your passport Cruising international waters?Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months . Some countries’ visa regulations require visitors to have at least six months’ validity on their passports.

mini cruise venice

Plan your carry-on luggage well It’s possible you’ll be on-board the ship before your main luggage arrives at your cabin, because of this we recommend that you pack reliable carry-on luggage so that you have everything you need.

Be the first to embark and the last to debark You may want to book an overnight in a hotel close to your departure port so that you can relax on departure day and not worry about losing time at the start of your cruise.

If you can, opt for early boarding so that you can start to enjoy your ship as soon as possible. Be the first in the hot tub or make any last minute on-board reservations.

On the other end of your cruise, consider booking an evening flight or a post-cruise hotel room — you can saunter off the ship at your leisure (enjoying one last breakfast on-board and possibly some extra sleep in your cosy cruise bed) and spend some time seeing the city and enjoying the last dregs of your holiday before you head home.

Being one of the first to embark and last to debark means taking full advantage of that time on-board.

Embarkation day discounts Check out the “embarkation day” specials when you board. Spas most always have an embarkation day special.

mini cruise venice

Also, speciality restaurants people haven’t happened upon yet are easy to get reservations at on the first night.

Plan ahead If you’re only on-board a ship for a few nights, decide what you want to achieve and then act accordingly.

For example, if you’ve heard about a speciality restaurant and are dying to dine there, want to get a spa treatment or see the latest theatre show, you’ll want to make a reservation and the earlier the better.

Study the deck plan Study the deck plan and if you are a light sleeper avoid booking near a stairwell or lift. If you enjoy going to the gym, get a cabin on the same deck, or if you like taking a dip, check out the pool locations so you don’t waste time walking the corridors.

Focus on the ship or the destination With limited time it is best to decide if you are sailing to make the most from your chosen ship or your chosen destination. You may find it difficult to truly get the best of both on a mini cruise.

If you’ve chosen a mini itinerary for the ports, spend some time looking up the possible shore excursions and research some top tips on the destinations.

mini cruise venice

Choose a ‘guarantee’ cabin If you’re not too fussy about where your stateroom is located, letting the cruise line decide where to place, you can often lead to a great discount on the advertised price.

A guarantee cabin is a cabin booked without a specific location or assigned number and there is always the possibility of a free upgrade.

Beat the breakfast queues People often forget that the main dining room is open for breakfast and if you don’t fancy queuing at the buffet this is a civilised option. Room service for breakfast is another treat!

The Best Time for Mediterranean mini cruises

The best time to take a Mediterranean mini cruise is in the spring (March-June) or fall (September-November). The temperatures are comfortably warm, the sun is bright, and the crowds are far, far fewer than in July and August. During the spring months, the flowers are blooming and the landscape is verdant, while autumn days are mild and clear before the winter rains.

Venice launches five-euro entry fee

Venice launched a new scheme Thursday to charge day-trippers for entering the historic Italian city, a world first intended to ease the pressure of mass tourism -- but many residents are opposed.

Visitors entering the UNESCO World Heritage site for the day have to buy a five-euro ($5.3) ticket, with inspectors carrying out spot checks at key entry points.

Considered one of the most beautiful cities on the planet, Venice is one of the world's top tourist destinations -- but is drowning under the weight of the crowds.

Around 10,000 tickets had been sold by the time the scheme began at 8:30 am (0630 GMT) on Thursday, according to Simone Venturini, the local councillor responsible for tourism.

Under a trial system, the "Venice Access Fee" is being introduced on 29 busy days throughout 2024, mostly weekends from May to July. Thursday is a public holiday in Italy.

There is no limit to the number of tickets available. Instead, the goal is to try to persuade day-trippers to visit during quieter times.

"I think it's good, because it will perhaps slow down the numbers of tourists in Venice," said Sylvain Pelerin, a French tourist who has been visiting for more than 50 years.

Overnight visitors, who already pay a tourist tax, will be exempt, as will minors under the age of 14 among others.

But not everyone is happy, with some residents set to protest against a measure they say curbs fundamental rights to freedom of movement.

"This is not a museum, it's not a protected ecological area, you shouldn't have to pay -- it's a city," Marina Dodino from the local residents association ARCI, told AFP.

- 'Soft controls' -

Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice, has said the new scheme is "an experiment", monitored with "very soft controls" and "without queues".

Visitors are being encouraged to buy their tickets online beforehand -- as many had on Thursday -- but will be able to buy one on arrival.

A new ticket office has been set up on the square in front of the Santa Lucia train station, the main point of entry into the city.

Inspectors will be able to fine those without tickets, ranging from 50 to 300 euros ($53 to $320).

But none are expected on Thursday, an official told AFP, with the goal to persuade rather than punish.

- UNESCO warning -

Venice, spread over more than 100 small islands and islets in northeastern Italy, was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1987.

But the numbers of people seeking to experience what the UN cultural body calls an "extraordinary architectural masterpiece" are widely considered to be unsustainable.

At peak times, 100,000 visitors stay overnight in the historic centre of Venice, double the resident population of just 50,000.

Tens of thousands more pour into the city's narrow streets for the day, often from cruise ships, to see sights including St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge.

UNESCO threatened last year to put Venice on its list of heritage in danger, citing mass tourism as well as rising water levels in its lagoon attributed to climate change.

Venice escaped the ignominy only after local authorities agreed the new ticketing system.

The idea had long been debated but repeatedly postponed over concerns it would seriously dent tourist revenue and compromise freedom of movement.

"The aim is to find a new balance between tourism and the city of its residents," Venturini told AFP on Wednesday.

"We must work to reduce the impact of daily tourism on certain days... (which) generates stress for the city,", he said.

Ashish Thakkar, an American tourist visiting Venice with his wife, questioned how much of an effect the day pass would have.

"If I'm coming all the way from out of the country, five euros just to get access to the city -- I wouldn't mind paying it," he told AFP.

"I don't think it's going to make a big difference."

Venturini hopes the initiative will persuade Italians living in the region not to come on busy days such as Thursday, when Italy marks its World War II Liberation Day.

Venice had already imposed a ban in 2021 on the massive cruise ships from which thousands of day-trippers emerge daily, rerouting them to a more distant industrial port.

I’m happy to pay to visit Venice, says first tourist to use new ticket system amid demonstrations

E merging from Venice’s railway station on a dank, rainy morning, Sylvain Pellarin was the first person in the world to arrive in the city as it imposed an entrance fee on tourists, a controversial initiative that is being closely watched by other tourist hotspots .

The scheme, which has divided opinion in the World Heritage city, is intended to drastically cut the number of tourist arrivals and relieve some of the strain that ordinary Venetians have endured for years.

For his part, Mr Pellarin said he was happy to hand over €5 (£4.30) for the entry fee at a shiny new ticket office that has been set up in front of the station, a few yards from the Grand Canal.

“I’ve been coming to Venice since I was a child and I have seen mass tourism intensify,” said the 55-year-old quality controller from Orleans, in France.

“I’m fine with paying it if the money is used well to protect the city. I think it’s right that you have to pay to see a place like Venice.”

Just to his right, Mark Michanowicz chose to acquire his entrance pass electronically from one of three digital screens set up in the ticket station.

“I think it’s the right thing to do. Venetians have suffered long enough from over-tourism . As a tourist you come, you eat, you go. Who’s going to clear up all the mess? I’d be willing to pay €10. If you’re going to visit a beautiful city, why not support it?’ said Mr Michanowicz, 64, a retired US army officer who knows Venice well, having been stationed at a base in northern Italy.

As the first trains of the day arrived, officials in white and yellow bibs conducted random checks on tourists to make sure they had a QR code on their phones that proved they had paid the entrance fee.

Most seemed, if not happy, then at least resigned, to stumping up €5 each for the privilege of entering La Serenissima, as Venice was known during its 1,000-year history as an independent republic.

“We were meant to have come to Venice yesterday and wouldn’t have had to pay, so that’s a bit of a bummer,” said Luca Perotti, 22, from London.

“We could have spent the money on a gelato or something. But I guess in the grand scheme of things, €5 is not so bad. Although it doesn’t seem to have reduced the number of tourists. The place is rammed,” said Mr Perotti, a kitchen and bathroom designer who was on a day trip from Verona with his girlfriend Kodie Jamieson, 26, a pharmacy dispenser.

The entrance payment – the first of its kind in the world – applies only to day-trippers.

Tourists who spend at least one night in the city are exempt, as are locals, students, commuters and children under the age of 14, although they all need to register online before they arrive.

“If our stewards find that a tourist has not made the payment, then they will ask them to do it there and then on their mobile phone,” said Simone Venturini, the city councillor in charge of tourism. “Or they can go in person to the ticket office outside the station.”

Tourists who are caught without the QR code face fines of up to €300.

The aim is to tackle the mass tourism that is slowly crushing the life out of Venice, with the number of residents now below 50,000.

“We want to have fewer day-trippers. On some days, Venice is overwhelmed by visitors. We are not closing the city. Everyone can enter. It’s just that some people now have to pay,” said Mr Venturini.

The entrance fee will be levied on 29 of the busiest days between now and mid-July. “After that we will review it. It could be extended,” he said.

But such a modest charge is unlikely to deter the millions of foreign tourists who long to see Venice, given the high prices they already face once they arrive. An espresso at an outdoor café in St Mark’s Square costs €12 while a dry Martini will set back the well-heeled visitor €26.

“We’ve been wanting to see Venice for a long time. It’s not like we are going to turn around and leave, now that we find out we have to pay,” said Kelly Snow, 45, from New Hampshire, who was visiting with her twin sister, Cara Carr, from Colorado. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip so I’m not bothered about having to pay five bucks.”

A few hundred protesters held a demonstration against the new tourist fee, saying that it will fail to reduce tourist numbers and does not address the structural problems that many Venetians face.

There were brief clashes between some protesters and riot police armed with batons and shields, although no reported injuries.

A few hundred people then marched along the city’s canals, holding banners which read Airbnb Kills Cities and The Entrance Charge Won’t Save Venice.

“We don’t want to be Disneyland. We’re not an open-air museum. We’re totally against this entrance ticket,” said Ruggero Tallon, from a protest group that also opposes the presence of huge cruise ships in the lagoon.

Federica Toninello, from another protest group, told The Telegraph: “This is a sad day for Venice. It’s a distraction from the real problem facing Venetians, which is the lack of affordable housing. There are 2,000 council homes which are lying empty because the council hasn’t done the necessary work. The population of Venice is now down to 49,000. This is the real issue. We need people to live here. Instead there are ever more hotels for tourists. We don’t want an entrance fee. We want more affordable homes.”

Venice council insists the entrance fee is not a money-making exercise and that the revenue will barely be enough to cover the administration of the scheme.

Many Venetians are unhappy with that, saying that if an entrance charge has to be imposed, the proceeds should go towards improving housing, transport and public services.

“I live on one of the outer islands in the lagoon and the roads are full of potholes,” said Giuseppe, a bar owner who declined to give his surname. “And I think the charge will take money out of the pockets of restaurants and cafes. If a family of four spends €20 on entering Venice, they’ll be inclined to spend less on food and drink.”

Jan van der Borg, an economics professor and expert on tourism at Venice’s Ca’ Foscari University, believes the entrance fee will not succeed in reducing the tourist crush.

Around 30 million tourists visited Venice each year, of whom 21 million were day-trippers, he said.

The many categories of people who are exempt from the charge would make it difficult to enforce, he said. “And we are already hearing that people are sharing their QR codes on Twitter to cheat the system and not have to pay. The scheme is highly inefficient and will cost more than the money it will bring in.”

He accused Venetian authorities of fast-tracking the payment scheme after Unesco last year threatened to place the city on its “World Heritage in Danger” list because of the threat posed by mass tourism.

“It was a ticking time bomb which the mayor needed to defuse. Not many people will be dissuaded by having to pay five euros. It’s less than the price of a beer in a regular bar in Venice. I don’t think it’s going to have any effect on the numbers.”

Venice tests 5-euro entry fee for day-trippers as the city grapples with over-tourism

Under the gaze of the world’s media, the fragile lagoon city of Venice launched a pilot program Thursday to charge day-trippers a 5-euro entry fee that authorities hope will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days and make the city more livable for its dwindling residents.

Visitors arriving at Venice’s main train station were greeted with large signs listing the 29 dates through July of the plan’s test phase that also designated separate entrances for tourists, and residents, students and workers. The fee is equivalent to about $5.26.

“We need to find a new balance between the tourists and residents,’’ said Simone Venturini, the city’s top tourism official. “We need to safeguard the spaces of the residents, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on some particular days.”

Not all residents, however, are persuaded of the efficacy of the new system in dissuading mass tourism, insisting that only a resurgence in the population will restore balance to a city where narrow alleyways and water buses are often clogged with tourists.

The chief of the United Nations culture agency hailed Italy’s ban on big cruise ships in the heart of Venice.

July 14, 2021

Hundreds of Venetians protested against the program, marching festively though the city’s main bus terminal behind banners reading, “No to Tickets, Yes to Services and Housing.” Protesters scuffled briefly with police in riot gear who blocked them from entering the city, before changing course and entering over another bridge escorted by plainclothes police. The demonstration wrapped up peacefully in a piazza.

Tourists arriving at the main station encountered almost as many journalists as stewards on hand to politely guide anyone unaware of the new requirements through the process of downloading the QR code to pay the fee.

Arianna Cecilia, a tourist from Rome visiting Venice for the first time, said she thought it was “strange” to have to pay to enter a city in her native country and be funneled through separate entrance ways for tourists.

She and her boyfriend were staying in nearby Treviso, and thus downloaded the QR code as required, but she was still caught off guard while taking in her first view ever of Venice’s canals by the sight of the entrance signs and her boyfriend telling her to get out the ticket.

On the other side of the entrance ways, workers in yellow vests carried out random checks at the train station. Transgressors face fines of 50 to 300 euros ($53 to $320), but officials said “common sense” was being applied for the launch.

Venice scrambles to save its treasures as floodwaters again submerge the city

Waters are on the rise again in Venice, just three days after the Italian lagoon city experienced its worst flooding in more than 50 years.

Nov. 15, 2019

The requirement applies only for people arriving between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Outside of those hours, access is free and unchecked.

Venice has long suffered under the pressure of over-tourism, and officials hope that the pilot project can help provide more exact figures to better manage the phenomenon.

The city can track the number of hotel visitors, which last year numbered 4.6 million and is down 16% from pre-pandemic highs. But the number of day visitors, which make up the majority of the crowds in Venice, could only be estimated until recently.

A Smart Control Room set up during the pandemic has been tracking arrivals from cellphone data, roughly confirming pre-pandemic estimates of 25 million to 30 million arrivals a year, said Michele Zuin, the city’s top economic official. That includes both day-trippers and overnight guests.

But Zuin said the data are incomplete.

“It’s clear we will get more reliable data from the contribution” being paid by day-trippers, he said.

Cruise ships restart in Venice; protesters decry their risks

The first cruise ship leaving Venice since the pandemic is set to depart amid protests by activists demanding that it be rerouted from the lagoon.

June 5, 2021

Venturini said the city is strained when the number of day-trippers reaches 30,000 to 40,000. On peak days, local police set up one-way traffic for pedestrians to keep the crowds moving.

Residents opposing the day-tripper tax insist that the solution to Venice’s woes is to boost the resident population and the services they need, limiting short-term rentals to make available more housing and attract families back from the mainland.

Last year, Venice passed a telling milestone when the number of tourist beds exceeded for the first time the number of official residents, which is now below 50,000 in the historic center with its picturesque canals.

“Putting a ticket to enter a city will not decrease ... even by one single unit the number of visitors that are coming,’’ said Tommaso Cacciari, an activist who organized a protest Thursday against the measure.

“You pay a ticket to take the metro, to go to a museum, an amusement park. You don’t pay a ticket to enter a city. This is the last symbolic step of a project of an idea of this municipal administration to kick residents out of Venice,” he said.

Venice officials expected paid day-tripper arrivals Thursday to reach about 10,000. More than 70,000 others had downloaded a QR code denoting an exemption, including to work in Venice or as a resident of the Veneto region. Hotels in Venice, including in mainland districts such as Marghera or Mestre, should provide a QR code attesting to their stay, which includes a hotel tax.

New Laws in Venice Will Limit Tourists

The influx of tens of thousands of less-than-affluent day-trippers from Eastern Europe this summer has prompted city officials in Venice to institute new laws to cope with their tourist dilemma.

Sept. 16, 1990

Venturini, the tourist official, said that interest in Venice’s pilot program has been keen from other places suffering from mass tourism, including other Italian art cities, and municipalities abroad such as Barcelona, Spain, and Amsterdam.

But Marina Rodino, who has lived in Venice for 30 years, doesn’t see the fee as a cure-all. Neighboring apartments in her residential building near the famed Rialto Bridge once inhabited by families are now short-term apartment rentals.

The corner butcher shop closed. Yet she noted that the new entrance fee requirement will still allow young people to flood the city in the evening for the traditional aperitivo , which can grow rowdy.

She was passing out mock European Union passports for “Venice, Open City,” underlining the irony of the new system, and challenging its legal standing with citations from the Italian Constitution guaranteeing its citizens the right to “move or reside freely in any part of the national territory.”

“This is not a natural oasis. This is not a museum. It is not Pompeii. It is a city, where we need to fight so the houses are inhabited by families, and stores reopen. That is what would counter this wild tourism,’’ Rodino said.

Passage to Siberia: Exploring historic Tyumen

Tyumen. View up the Tura River. From left: Church of the Elevation of the Cross, School of Commerce, Trinity Monastery with Church of Sts. Peter and Paul and Trinity Cathedral. September 4, 1999

At the beginning of the 20th century, Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for vivid color photography. His vision of photography as a form of education and enlightenment was demonstrated with special clarity through his images of architectural monuments in the historic sites throughout the Russian heartland.

In June 1912, Prokudin-Gorsky ventured into western Siberia as part of a commission to document the Kama-Tobolsk Waterway, a link between the European and Asian sides of the Ural Mountains. The town of Tyumen served as his launching point for the journey north to Tobolsk, on the Irtysh River.

During his journey, Prokudin-Gorsky took several extraordinarily valuable photographs of both Tyumen and Tobolsk . My photographs of Tyumen and Tobolsk were taken in the late Summer of 1999.

Humble beginnings

Considered the earliest permanent Russian settlement in Siberia, Tyumen was founded in 1586 on the site of a Tatar encampment at the confluence of the Tura and Tiumenka Rivers. The initiative for its creation came from Boris Godunov, the power behind the throne of Tsar Fedor (son of Ivan the Terrible) and, eventually, to become tsar himself in 1598.

Godunov was closely allied with the Stroganovs, who from their commercial center at the northern town of Solvychegodsk had sent a detachment of Cossacks commanded by a certain Yermak deep into Siberia to challenge the power of the ruler of Siberian Tatars, Khan Kuchum. Although the precise dates are open to question, it appears that, in the Fall of 1581, Yermak captured Chingi-Tura (later Tyumen), but abandoned his conquest, in order to proceed straight to Kashlyk, capital of Khan Kuchum, whom Yermak defeated in 1582 during a battle near the Irtysh River.

Following Yermak’s death in a surprise Tatar raid in 1584, his conquests remained temporarily unconsolidated after his death. Nonetheless, Boris Godunov was aware of the enormous significance of Siberia and launched a campaign to found settlements, as he did in other border areas of the medieval Muscovite state.

Like other early Russian Siberian towns, Tyumen originally served as a garrison fortress for Cossacks and other troops, who protected newly developing trade routes in all directions. The eastern connections with China gained particular importance during the 17th century.

Tyumen’s location on the Tura River also provided a direct link westward with the gateway town of Verkhoturye founded by Boris Godunov on the Asian side of the Ural Mountains in 1598. And to the east and north of Tyumen, the Tura River merges with the Tobol, which in turn joins the great Irtysh near Tobolsk. By virtue of its location, Tyumen was destined from the beginning to play a significant role in the Russian development of Siberia.

The opening of Siberia for Russian colonization during the late 16th and 17th centuries was an epic confrontation between the vast distances of this severe land and the enterprise of Russian merchants, whose commercial interests coincided with the tsars’ appetite for eastern expansion. Although its rivers were only tributaries of the Irtysh (itself a tributary of the great Ob River), Tyumen was well situated to utilize Siberia’s vast water network.

Like most early Russian towns in Siberia, Tyumen originally served as a fortified settlement for Cossacks and other troops, who in the 17th century protected newly developing trade routes, particularly with China.

When the southern boundary of Moscow’s Asian territory became more settled during the 18th century, Tyumen’s importance increased for the development of transportation as well as small commercial and industrial enterprises. Its status as a transportation nexus also involved the exile system, which sent convicts and political exiles throughout Siberia.

As a regional administrative point for western Siberia, Tyumen rapidly became a center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Its Trinity Monastery was founded in 1616 on the high right bank of the Tura River. Originally dedicated to the Transfiguration, the monastery was a modest collection of log buildings until its transformation in the early part of the 18th century by an energetic Ukrainian prelate, Bishop Fyodor Leshchinsky.

As an ally of Peter the Great, Bishop Fyodor saw architecture as a reflection of a broad cultural transformation and the Church of the Trinity that he built at the monastery in 1709-1715 is Tyumen’s earliest surviving building. Gutted during the Soviet era, the Trinity Church has been renovated (with modifications) together with its neighbor, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1741-1755. Fortunately, Prokudin-Gorsky photographed both shrines in 1912.

These early examples of a provincial baroque style served as a model for other 18th-century churches in Tyumen, culminating with the lavish Cathedral of the Icon of the Virgin of the Sign (Znamensky), which has recently been splendidly refurbished. Built in several phases between 1768 and 1891, the cathedral displays the florid decoration typical of much of Siberian church architecture.

The daunting vastness of Siberia’s reaches gradually submitted in the 19th century to new forms of transportation. The first steamboat to ply a Siberian river was constructed here in 1838.

The greatest impulse for economic growth came with the completion of a railroad from Yekaterinburg, on the east slope of the Ural Mountains in 1885. This line ultimately became an important segment of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, transporting the wealth of Siberia’s forests, mines and new agricultural regions, as well as leather and other products of local factories.

At the turn of the 20th century, over half a million settlers passed through the town toward Siberia’s open, fertile lands. Fortunately, remnants of this period have survived in the central part of the city.

This memory of the past is especially evident in the city’s remarkable wooden houses, with elaborate framed and carved window surrounds in a style specific to Tyumen. These massive window constructions often include carved panels below the sill as an additional decorative and protective device.

Their solid construction allowed rows of large windows in wooden houses even in this harsh climate, thus bringing maximum available light to interiors during the long Siberian winters.

Tyumen today is the capital of an enormous province - stretching from Kazakhstan in Central Asia north to the Arctic Ocean - that is one of the world’s richest energy producing regions. Tyumen has benefited from this bounty of natural resources and is at present one of the few Siberian cities to show major population growth: from slightly over half a million in the 2002 census to some 850,000 in the latest estimate. As usual in Siberian cities, most residents live beyond the historic center in Soviet-era housing developments.

A walk through the historic center of town shows vivid contrasts of modest pre-revolutionary brick and wooden buildings, rarely more than two stories in height, with ponderous Soviet buildings and sleek new commercial centers. Some of the new structures are private apartment houses, others are banks and office buildings and still others form a part of the expanding Tyumen State University.

In the early 20th century, Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916, he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France where he was reunited with a large part of his collection of glass negatives, as well as 13 albums of contact prints. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century, the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A few Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986, architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.
