Morris Oxford Traveller all-steel Series IV 1957-60

The Oxford IV was only made in the Traveller estate wagon version. A steel-bodied replacement for the "woody" Series III Traveller introduced in 1957, it was similar to the previous Series III saloon in most respects. The Morris Oxford Traveller used a 1489 cc BMC B-Series engine.

An Exceptional Morris Minor Traveller, Blessed by Jay Leno

1960 Morris Minor Traveller

The 1960 Morris Minor Traveller wagon currently for sale on eBay could be the world’s most famous example. That’s because the fully restored model was featured on Jay Leno’s Garage in 2018. During the episode , Leno trades quips with Scotland-born fellow talk show host (and car lover) Craig Ferguson.

morris traveller 1960

The Minor was designed by Alec Issigonis, who put Britain’s middle class on wheels with it and the later Mini.

The Traveller in 1960 sported a 37-horsepower version of BMC’s A-Series four.

The seller says his wood-paneled Traveller is “near perfect” and “the best in the US.” He points to a comparable model sold via auction for $57,750 and says, “Ours is a tad better.” This stellar example is offered on eBay with a $39,000 Buy-It-Now price.

Morris Minor Traveller: Punk Rock on Wheels

The Minor was designed by Alec Issigonis, who put Britain’s middle class on wheels with it and the later Mini.

On the Leno show, Ferguson takes one look at the Traveller, inhales its lingering 1960 aroma, and exclaims, “This is punk rock.” Leno points out that 1.3 million Morris Minors were produced from 1948 to 1971.

The Traveller, Morris’s name for the wood-bodied wagon versions of the Minor, is indeed a sterling example of the breed. There are no visible demerits. The leather seats look brand new, and the wood is perfect and polished to a shine. The paint is undoubtedly better than that produced at Britain’s hit-or-miss factories at the time.

The Minor was designed by Alec Issigonis, who also designed the later Mini. Issigonis could be said to have put Britain’s middle class on wheels. At the time, the Minor was state of the art, featuring monocoque construction and torsion bar front suspension, with rack-and-pinion steering.

Under the hood initially was a 918-cc Morris flathead four that had prewar origins. Leno said that Issigonis insisted on a small engine to avoid the austerity-minded horsepower tax. The car couldn’t go much faster than 35 mph with that engine, making them impractical for highway-loving Americans.

Minor Morris Adds a Smidgen of Power

The Traveller in 1960 sported a 37-horsepower version of BMC’s A-Series four.

In 1952, with Morris merging with Austin to produce BMC, the Minor inherited its partner’s new 803-cc overhead-valve four. That added a smidgen of useful power. “Zero to 50 mph in 28 seconds” was the new selling point for the Series II. The car’s A-Series engine grew to 948-cc and 37 horsepower in 1956 when the company also improved the transmission, and it used one-piece front glass for the first time.

The Traveller station wagon was introduced in 1954. The wood and aluminum rear section for the woodies was built at the MG factory in Abington and united with the cab section produced at Cowley by Morris. There were also commercial panel variants without the structural wood, such as the red Royal Post van driven by Ferguson’s father. All of them were made for a slower time.

By 1960, comparable woodies had disappeared from US manufacturer lineups. But the Morris Traveller remained. It was barely powerful enough to slice and dice on the American freeways, so there are some left-hand-drive examples around. US imports ended after 1967.

Restored to Perfection

The owner of the eBay example is statistics professor Michael Kersnick. He bought it from the restorer locally in Marina Del Rey 10 years ago. “He did a lot of work,” Kersnick told the eBay Motors Blog. “The wood came in a kit he ordered from England. I have a thick sheaf of records,” he said. “The car drives beautifully.”

The engine is likely a 948-cc unit, as original, Kersnick said, adding that he put only about 1,500 miles on the car during his ownership.

Kersnick is a frequent visitor to Jay Leno’s automotive warehouses. “I know you have to show up with food,” he said.

Interior - 1960 Morris Minor Traveller

The 1960 Morris Minor Traveller was a winner of the People’s Choice award at the San Marino Concours.

eBay currently has four Travellers for sale, among about 10 Morris Minors . There are parts as well. There are no major mechanical differences between the sedans and the Morris Minor Travellers, so most parts should fit both variants.

There’s no obvious departure from stock on the car for sale, aside from a small gauge cluster. The car should be pretty lively around town and surprisingly roomy for its profile. Travellers are known for their folding rear seat.

The range of Morris Minor cars continued after the Mini was released. The latter also gained a Traveller variant. The descendant of both cars is the current Mini Countryman , which shares the compact wagon format. But the new ones lack the wood.

Morris Minor Traveller buyer’s guide

morris traveller 1960

The Morris Minor Traveller combines the accessibility of its saloon sibling with practicality and undeniable charm. Here’s how to buy one

Words: Paul Wager

This isn’t the first guide we’ve published to the wood-framed Moggy and it’s unlikely to be the last, such is the constantly evolving nature of the classic car scene.

Today the ultra-practical Traveller is one of the more-sought-after Minor variants, alongside the commercial derivatives with which it has so much in common but its wooden rear bodywork framing means it needs more care than all of them.

Not so long ago, the Traveller was still being overlooked in favour of the regular Minor saloon but that wooden jigsaw is in fact structural and neglected examples deteriorated quickly.

Luckily, renewed interest in the Traveller together with its easy ownership experience, great parts support and those double doors allowing easy access for dogs and luggage alike means the gap between neglected and presentable cars has widened and the tatty ones now stand out.

The Morris Minor arrived in breathless sidevalve form in 1948, with the Traveller added to the range in 1953 just as the new A-Series engine replaced the old Morris engine.

In 1956 the Minor 1000 arrived, with a one-piece screen and the stronger 903cc, 37bhp version of the A-Series engine paired with an improved gearbox and higher final drive. These changes shaved an incredible 20 seconds off the 0-60 time.

Flashing indicators were added in 1961, while in 1962 the engine was enlarged again to 1098cc and 48bhp, paired with stronger synchromesh, a 7.5-inch clutch and larger eight-inch front brake drums. In 1963 revised light clusters gained separate orange segments for the indicators, while the clap-hands wipers were swapped for the modern tandem type.

A key starter was fitted from October 1964 and the passenger glovebox received a lid, the seats became a single colour and a plainer safety steering wheel was fitted. And that was pretty much it as BMC concentrated on the Mini and the 1100 before Minor production was wound down, the convertible ending in 1969, the saloons in November 1970 and the Traveller clinging on until April 1971.

morris traveller 1960

The Minor was an early example of unitary construction and to ensure the strength of the bodyshell it’s a more complex affair than you might expect given the utilitarian nature of the car, with plenty of double-skinned areas.

Like the commercial versions, the Traveller uses a hybrid construction with the unitary front end of the saloon and a chassis for the rear section. Throw in the complexity of the wooden rear bodywork framing and the Traveller offers up the prospect of both rusty metalwork and rotten woodwork to deal with.

Starting at the front end, the Minor’s reputation as a DIY-friendly classic means many have received the attentions of the home welder but there are plenty of box sections and double-skinned areas which makes repairing serious rust a tricky business.

Spend time in the workshops of any Minor specialist and you’ll see that good metal often has to be cut away in order to effect repairs inside box sections and if not done carefully, this can mean that crucial parts of the shell end up out of alignment. Workshops performing extensive body repair on the Minor shell will often fit cross-bracing before embarking on major metal surgery to prevent this.

Sills and floors covered in small patch repairs are a sure sign of the DIY welding torch, while the fit of the doors is a good clue as to the alignment of the A-pillar and sills… although do remember that this is a 1940s Morris so don’t expect Lexus-level panel gaps.

The gap between the front wings and bonnet is another clue as to the quality of previous work. The wings bolt on and if the mounting flange or the general inner arch and bulkhead have been disturbed then they won’t fit properly. A stack of washers under the mounting bolts indicates a quick fix.

Meanwhile, check the traditional Minor rust spots: the crossmembers under the front seats and the inner part of the sills under the carpets. The front crossmember which supports the front suspension torsion bars is also critical, while the floors are also worth a check.

Other rust should be obvious, like crusty door bottoms and frilly headlight apertures, but all the panels you’ll need are available.

Moving rearwards, the chassis metalwork obviously needs to be sound, especially the spring hanger areas for the rear suspension, but it is at least easy to see any problems.

The elephant in the room is that wooden rear bodywork framing which is in fact structural and can be weakened alarmingly if rot has set in. The standard test for wooden-framed bodywork like this is to squeeze the wooden sections firmly by hand and if they give at all then you need to suspect the worst.

Visible mould in the joints is also a bad sign, as are obviously home-made repairs, since this is a complex structure with precise joints and school woodwork lessons won’t have covered the necessary skills.

Yes, you can buy complete replacement wood sets but fitting them isn’t a simple task, since the cars all vary slightly which means inevitably some alteration will be needed. It’s not impossible for the DIY restorer but time-consuming to do properly.

The bodywork also needs to go together in the right order, since the wooden frame must be assembled and aligned first, then the roof skin is nailed (yes, nailed) in place and then a finishing gutter strip added to conceal the nails. The rear doors must also be adjusted to open and close perfectly and the entire process takes even Minor specialists quite some time, often requiring the chassis to be jacked up at the rear corners to square things up during assembly.

morris traveller 1960

Engine and transmission

The early 803cc A-Series is a rare unit in the Traveller and something of a specialist proposition, so for most purposes it will be the 948 or 1098cc A-Series you’ll be looking at. The engine is very much a known quantity and problems should be both obvious and easy to diagnose. Smoking suggests tired valve seals or guides and as for oil leaks, it’s often said that a Minor not leaking a bit of oil is probably empty. If an oil leak is really bad, then suspect the rear crankshaft oil seal, or the front seal. The sump gasket and the rocker cover gasket are also prone to leak.

The strongest gearboxes came with the 1098cc cars, but worn synchromesh can arise on all examples, giving crunchy changes – after all, even the youngest is still over 50 years old. Either learn to live with it or hunt down a good used replacement if you don’t fancy the cost of a rebuild. If the box jumps out of gear as you lift off the throttle sharply, it’s harder to live with and will need more immediate attention.

No Minor ever featured synchromesh on first gear, so if you plan to do a lot of town driving then learn the double-declutching technique to achieve a crunch-free change down to first on the move. It’s a satisfying skill and much better than slipping the clutch in stop-and-go traffic.

morris traveller 1960

Suspension, steering and brakes

The Minor uses a kingpin design for the front suspension which means regular greasing is required. Check for evidence that the grease nipples have been used within living memory and also check the trunnions for wear: with the front wheel off the ground, grasp the tyre and top and bottom and attempt to waggle it, with any significant movement evidence that work is needed.

If the rear end seems to be sitting low, the rear leaf springs may simply have sagged and if the ride is excessively bouncy, suspect the lever arm dampers are past their best. Reconditioned units are around £70 a pair and simple to fit.

Standard braking kit is unassisted drums all round and when set up properly and in good order, they do stop the 800kg Minor perfectly well. By today’s standards the pedal pressure required is high though, which can put off drivers used to modern cars, especially in urban traffic and a useful upgrade is a remote brake servo. This works well with the standard drum system and although a front disc conversion is a popular upgrade, it depends on how you intend to drive the car.

morris traveller 1960

Interior, trim and electrics

The Minor’s cabin is both small and relatively spartan, meaning that a tired interior needn’t put you off at the right price. Indeed, smartening up a shabby cabin can be a rewarding DIY project, with all the parts available from the likes of Newton Commercial. Carpet sets involve some glueing and cutting but it’s all basic DIY, while the seat covers and padding can be stripped off the existing frames with basic hand tools and replaced with new ones.

Many Travellers are trimmed in the rear with offcuts of old domestic carpet but the original Hardura material is still available.

In standard form, the Minor’s electrical kit amounts to little more than lights, heater fan and wipers which means the original dynamo is up to the task. The demands of modern life such as brighter headlights, modern audio and phone charging socket will mean that the dynamo can struggle to charge at idle speeds, so an alternator upgrade is a good move.

Morris Minor Traveller: our verdict

The Morris Minor Traveller must be one of the most practical classics going: in 1098cc form it has the pace to keep up with modern traffic, there’s not a single part you can’t buy off the shelf and those opening rear doors and square load compartment give it the practicality of a small van. What’s more, running costs are no greater than a modern hyper-economical hybrid supermini.

Where it will bite you though is in restoration costs if you buy a bodged or rotten example, so be diligent and view several examples to get an idea of how a good one should feel. Remember, the bodywork is always going to be more expensive than the oily bits.

Regular readers will be aware of my love of original and unmolested classics. That doesn’t mean I instantly dismiss custom builds because I feel they allow an owner to express individualism that will usually draw crowds. Such is the case with this 1960 Morris Minor Traveller. No aspect of this classic escaped the owner’s attention in their quest to create a genuinely unique vehicle. Unlike the wagon upon which it is based, this Traveller possesses off-road capabilities that should allow it to access some pretty harsh terrain. It needs a new home, so the owner has listed it here on eBay in Flemington, New Jersey. Bidding has raced to $13,200, although that figure is short of the reserve.

morris traveller 1960

Many European countries took a long time to recover from the ravages of World War II, and England was no exception. Rationing continued for years after hostilities ended, but there was recognition amongst government and industry that one of the best ways to stimulate the economy was to get the population mobile. The first Morris Minor appeared in 1948, and when considering its design and space efficiency, it is unsurprising to learn that the legendary Alec Issigonis led the design team. The original sedan variant was barely more than twelve feet in overall length and featured a conventional front engine/rear drive mechanical layout. However, it could still seat four adults in relative comfort while accommodating a surprising amount of luggage. The Traveller appeared in 1953, and our feature vehicle rolled out of the factory in Cowley, Oxford, England, in 1960. It has undergone a radical transformation between then and now, making it genuinely eye-catching. The builder bolted the body to a 1987 Suzuki Samurai frame, adding a Zuki Offroad suspension kit, larger alloy wheels, and chunky tires to give the wagon a purposeful appearance. The Red paint that graces the panels isn’t from the 1960 Morris color palette, but it perfectly suits this automotive extrovert. The seller indicates it isn’t perfect, although its overall presentation and shine mean it is still pretty stunning. The timber recently received seven coats of Epifanes varnish, while the faux woodgrain inserts offer a lovely contrast. The Traveller is rust-free, with trim and glass that appears excellent.

morris traveller 1960

When it was shiny and new, the 1960 Morris Minor Traveller offered respectable performance levels combined with excellent fuel economy. Its 948cc four-cylinder engine produced 37hp that fed to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Such a modest power output resulted in a ¼ mile ET of 23.7 seconds, although it achieved this while returning fuel consumption figures of 38mpg on what was pretty poor-quality fuel. Those days are long behind it because the upgraded frame brought other more profound changes. Powering this Morris is a General Motors 4.3-liter V6 of 1992 vintage. Its power finds its way to the road via a Turbo Hydramatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case. The seller doesn’t specify a power output for the V6, but it is safe to assume that it should be around 160hp, with a torque figure of approximately 230 ft/lbs. Combined with the raised ride height, this Traveller should climb into areas its creators could only dream of. The seller says it is in excellent mechanical health, running and driving well. They point out the obvious: the raised ride height and chunky tires make it noisier and harsher riding than a regular Morris. However, it happily cruises at highway speeds and is a turnkey classic ready for a new owner.

morris traveller 1960

The custom touches continue when we open the doors and survey the Traveller’s interior. Its front seats are aftermarket items, but the seller retrimmed the back seat to match. The painted surfaces contrast the exterior paint shade, and the timber addition below the dash is a classy touch. The builder added a more modern steering column featuring controls for the headlamps and wipers, while a heater makes life more pleasant on cold days. There are a few minor marks and flaws across the interior, but nothing that genuinely detracts from its appearance. If considered a driver-quality classic, it is definitely acceptable.

morris traveller 1960

Variety is the spice of life, and the classics we feature at Barn Finds undoubtedly reflect that. We’ve seen a few Morris Minor Travellers over the years, but none that were like our feature vehicle. Meticulously restored classics will always command attention and respect, and owners are rightly proud of those cars. This Morris is a different proposition because it will appeal to someone craving an extrovert that contains the fun factor. One of the difficulties with vehicles of this type is assessing their potential value. While some custom builds follow a relatively conventional path, this 1960 Morris Minor Traveller is no such creature. It will be worth what someone is willing to pay, but the twenty-two bids submitted thus far suggest that a few people are happy to spend the money to park it in their drive. Are you?

I like these stock, but this is a well done bizarre maybe, conversion. Don’t know the history, maybe wasn’t a whole lot of the Morris left. Providing it’s not a putty bucket it looks really good. My hats off to the builder.

Shag-wagon, needs a Union Jack.

. . . really really silly, even if well built. A ‘thing’ of two halves – I’d sell the bottom bit and bring it back to earth!

You lost me at “Chevy V-6.”

4.3 one of top 3 dependable engine ever built, tell me why you disagree??

It’s a Chevy V-6. That’s why. As exciting as a potato. But, hey, you do you.

Top 3? Puleease.

Ruined a perfectly good Morris Traveller

. . . a stick in the mud would say

Wheels, tires, chome JC Whitney tubes, beyond sucks, could be made cool, with someone with style/class.

Nothing exceeds like excess…

For sale again? Was just here a year ago. Had a 61 Pickup for 30 years. Should’ve never sold it. Dependable, easy to work on, lowest operating cost vehicle I ever owned. Miss that truck.

Oy, Hold my Guinness and watch this…

Barf. Why ruin a cool and super rare Morris Minor?

What? really what a waste of a great classic. With the money spent could have gotten a nice SUV or pickup. I wonder what drove someone to this level of insanity. No road noise with those tires.

Love, love, love ALL British cars. My Austin Devon A-40, much like this Morris, is a bit of a monster. Carol Shelby knew British style and American muscle made for a winning recipe. My A-40 has a 302/auto/9 inch/disc brakes/ custom chassis, etc, etc. Would I do this to an AH 3000 or Bug-eye? Hell no! But these and others of the same “class” were like Bic lighters”. Disposable… If this Morris could talk, it would be the proud and loud Dwayne Johnson of its marque.

Someday, the owners of the few remaining stock Suzuki Samurais will a: be thrilled at the scarcity and value of them, while b: scouring junkyards for jacked-up Travelers, Spitfires and the like for needed chassis bits. ;) All that’s missing from this build is rotting timber trim and faux patina. But as always, to each her/his own, right? :D

In Texas it was, and still is to the best of my knowledge, that the title goes with frame. This car should be listed as a Suzuki Samurai 4X4. Whatever you call it, I don’t want it.

The seller has another unsullied example in one of the pictures so presumably they know what they are doing. Worst thing about it for me is the transmission, and that’s just a quibble. I would buy this in a heartbeat. It wouldn’t take too much to make it better.

back toward the ground 6? inches, 14 X 31 tire (‘pie cutters’ if needed)? 1.3 or 1.6 (we’re turboin 1 in a “tracker” right now) motor w/turboed ?

Lub the rest0 job, less the mod… Gimmie the Traveler, keep the Zuk.

Congrats on all the work, nice package~

I cannot explain my love for these creations but it really doesn’t matter the vehicle to me, from El Camino’s to station wagons and minivans dropped on a 4X4 chassis they all make me smile

1960 Morris Traveller 1000 Woodie 1960 M0rris Minor Traveller

1960 Morris Traveller 1000 Woodie 1960 M0rris Minor Traveller

Murray, Kentucky

Model Traveller 1000

Mileage 115000

Early last year I got this Morris from a storage building it had been in since 1974. The next door neighbor did not even know the car was in the building. It has all original interior, original paint and original wood. The original 950 was locked up I think from over heating. I have a 1275 I think will run included with the auction but its condition is unknown. Over all this Traveller is in fair to good condition. There is typical rust beneath the rocker panel area which is typical in Morris Minors but the floor pans are very good for its age. Some minor holes on the drivers floor but it would repair easy. There is a hole on the frame rail on the passenger side beneath the lower control arm. It could be repaired fairly easily now that the engine is out of the car, The wood is fair and has no finish on it at all right now. It will need to be replaced in a few years but I think will provide some services for a few more years after refinished, It will need a typical repairs found on a car that has not been on the road in more than 40 years. There are roof dents and dings from storage. There is some damage from an accident on the drivers side. The door could be repaired but I have a spare door I will include wit the sale. There is a piece of wood missing on the drivers side from the damage. I do have another drivers rear fender included wit the sale. I think this could be a drive with you restore it kind of car. Its very cool but I just have too many (8)other British cars I want to keep. I also have a few new items not seen in the auction included in the sale. The title is an older open title with may or may not work in your state. It's from the 1970's Email with questions. Your welcome to arrange to see it. Model Morris Traveller W/Fiat 1800cc Twin Cam

Mileage 45000

1969 Morris Traveller w/Fiat 1800cc twin cam The Morris Minor was released to critical acclaim at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1948. Designed under the leadership of Alec Issigonis of Mini fame, more than 1.3 million were manufactured between 1948 and 1972. Initially available as a two-door sedan and convertible, the hugely successful car’s range was subsequently expanded to include a four-door saloon, panel van, pick-up truck, and a wood-framed station wagon, or estate, the Traveller. The Traveller featured an external wooden structural frame, in ash, for the rear bodywork, with two side-hinged rear doors. The frame was varnished rather than painted and a highly visible feature of the body style, similar to the American “Woodie” from most of the U.S. manufacturers. The car offered here is a bit of a sleeper, however. The A-series 1098cc engine has been replaced with an 1800cc twin-cam engine from a Fiat 124, together with the 5-speed manual gearbox. In standard trim, the Traveller could boast 48bhp. Now, this diminutive British icon produces 116 bhp, propelling the car with far more modern performance figures. It’s a blast and sounds the part too! The professionally performed engine swap was undertaken several years ago, with great attention to detail, including Morris-badged cam covers. The exhaust is routed through a twin box system to deliver a nice, throaty sound, and disc brakes at all 4 corners are served by a booster for modern stopping power. Suspension upgrades include converted tube shocks and thick front and rear sway bars for great handling. The build included a full rewire of the electrical system with modern style fuse and relay panel, a great improvement over the original Lucas system. The engine starts easily, idles well and has great responsive power. The clutch is excellent, and the car shifts well, though 3rd gear synchro is a little weak. Brakes, suspension and steering are great. The wheels are scuff-free and shod with good tires with plenty of tread remaining. To ready the car for sale, it has just been fully serviced and a new battery installed. The interior is in good condition. The freshly restored reclining bucket seats are a departure from the original, as is the Mountney steering wheel. A full array of gauges, including ammeter, tachometer, and oil and water temperature, have been nicely installed behind the steering wheel, complimenting the center speedometer. The pedals are top-hung - a very nice upgrade – and the green light on the end of the indicator stalk is fully functional. The original door panels are in good condition, as is the rear seat. The carpet is in perfectly reasonable condition. Paint and body on the car are fair to good. The all-important wood is in good, solid condition. Subject to an older repaint, it is showing wear, though the finish is consistent. There is no evidence of accident damage or repair. The body is generally rust-free, but the bottom of the door’s outer surface is showing some rust bubbling through. The floors, sills, and rear wheel tubs are solid as well as all other panels. There is rust in the rear valance, though it looks to be an easy repair. It could be a rolling restoration – drive it as is, or restore it as you go. All in all, this is a fantastically fun bit of iconic British design with the heart of an Italian sportscar. How can that not be a blast to own and drive. It gets waves and appreciation everywhere it goes, with a little surprise under the hood.
