Kayaking In Mykonos – Coastline And Sea Caves Tour

Our experience of kayaking in Mykonos was really amazing! It was one of our favourite activities on the famous Greek island of Mykonos. Here’s what we thought.

A Different Side To Mykonos

My partner and I visited Mykonos in June 2020, just as Greece was reopening for tourism . As we live in Athens, it was easy to hop on a ferry and get to the famous island.

Given everything that was going on in 2020, it was certainly a unique time to visit the most cosmopolitan Cycladic island!

We loved visiting Mykonos without the crowds , and in my opinion, the beaches in Mykonos are some of the best I’ve seen in Greece. It was great to see them without the loungers and loud beach bars that the island is famous for nowadays.

Kayaking tour in Mykonos

As I was checking for guided tours and outdoors activities in Mykonos, I noticed a company called Mykonos Kayak . Thinking about it, it’s rather weird, but I had never tried kayaking before. It sounded like a fun thing to do in Mykonos.

I am one of these Greeks who absolutely love the sea. My biggest passion is snorkelling, and I have tried most water sports.

Windsurfing, paddle boarding, jet-skiing, sailing, banana rides, scuba diving, fishing and pretty much every other sea activity, but never kayaking.

I got in touch with Mykonos Kayak, and they invited us to join a special kayaking tour. As the season was just opening, they had set up a unique half-day activity for their friends and other local people. Now that was cool!

Our kayaking experience in Mykonos

If anyone had told me how much fun they had on a kayaking trip, I would probably think they are exaggerating. I was wrong! Kayaking in Mykonos was an incredible activity, where we saw a totally different side of the island.

We met the team at Panormos beach, to the north side of Mykonos. We were greeted by the father, Kostas, who told us a few things about their small family business.

Kostas has been living in Mykonos for a few decades, with his wife Jo, that we sadly didn’t get to meet. The kayaking trips are run by the two sons, Nikos (in the photo below) and Alexis.

They are both very passionate about kayaking in Mykonos and introducing their homeplace to visitors.

Before the kayaking tour began, Nikos gave us clear instructions on how to use the paddles. He also told us a few things about safety, and handed out red and blue life jackets for us to wear.

Apparently, they are called buoyancy aids in English. I live and learn!

We set off, and started following the coast going to the north. We were extremely lucky, as it was a day with absolutely no wind. As a result, paddling along the coast was a breeze (especially as Dave saw it as a chance to get a workout).

Mykonos kayaking trip

As we were paddling, we soon arrived to a small, quiet beach, just between Panormos and Agios Sostis. The easiest way to reach this small bay is by sea, though there seemed to be a very steep footpath as well.

We stopped for a swim, and Nikos showed us some of the local herbs. I thought I’d know all of them, but I was wrong. This is throumpi , which is similar to oregano, only stronger. It is used for the preparation of the Mykonian louza , a type of sausage.

We then continued to the north of the island, past Agios Sostis, and out to some small, rocky islets. I loved exploring the incredible rock formations. We even went inside a massive sea cave!

Our kayaking activity lasted for about four hours! Normally the trip is shorter, but as the weather was great and Nikos was in the mood for it, we paddled on.

We also had a chat about different types of kayaks, and how it affects speed and stability. It was clear that Nikos and Alexis are experts, as they’ve been kayaking since they were very young.

Kayaking trip – The real face of Mykonos

Usually, the kayaking trip is combined with more Mykonos outdoors experiences. Depending on the weather, these may include snorkelling, hiking, herb picking, a Greek lunch and an archery taster session.

The family aims to show visitors the true nature of Mykonos, beyond the expensive loungers and the nightlife. They are also keen on preserving nature and keeping our beaches clean from plastic and other litter.

It was a great opportunity to meet a passionate local family and find out more about the real face of Mykonos.

Note that, if you don’t have your own transportation, hotel pickups can be arranged. In addition, if you book a tour and the weather is not suitable, you will be offered alternative options or a full refund.

Nikos and Alexis are very cautious when it comes to safety, while at the same time being fun to be with!

We were advised not to bring our phones or anything valuable with us, so we just brought some water, sunblock and hats.

While it would have been fine to bring the phone along on that particular day, I would have definitely not wanted to worry about it if it was windy.

Other outdoors activities in Mykonos

We thought that a kayaking trip was a unique way to see Mykonos. In addition, there are many other outdoors activities on the island.

First of all, there are plenty of water sports all around Mykonos. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are particularly popular. You will find companies renting equipment and providing lessons on many of the beaches.

Another tour that sounds interesting is this hiking activity . Goes to prove that Mykonos is more than just beaches and bars!

If adventurous activities are not exactly your thing, you can always take a half-day cruise activity around Mykonos . There is a variety of sailing tours, including beach and snorkelling time, or just a meal and drinks.

A.   Kayak experience

Our kayak experience is our first activity in our outdoor activity program of Mykonos kayak tours and trails. It is our sea kayaking experience, which lasts aprox. 90 minutes.

Mykonos offers a truly unique sea kayaking experience, spectacular vistas, long sandy beaches, crystal clear water, enchanting secret coves, local wildlife and dramatic rock formations. The wild northern coastline delivers a revitalizing break from the hustle and bustle of modern living.

The island has a rich and vibrant culture, as well as a dramatic geological past. Exploring this pristine environment, paddling around the dramatic coastline, and being the captain of your own vessel in the form of a modern sea kayak, allows you to reconnect with nature, reinvigorating your mind, body, and soul.  Our local experienced group leaders and our BCU qualified kayak instructors will take you on a journey of discovery, exploring Mykonos from the sea, revealing to you the authentic Mykonos, that few people have had the privilege of witnessing.

B .   Mykonos Outdoors Classic 

Our Mykonos "Outdoors Classic" tour is a land and water activity tour, offering a balance of outdoor activity, leisure time and culture,  which is geared to satisfy and stimulate both the body and mind, in the beautiful surroundings of the Mykonian nature.

This tour takes place in the pristine natural beauty area of Panormos Bay and Agios Sostis.

We start our tour with a scenic hike following an old donkey path which meanders over beautiful herb covered hills, a unique area which is known as the forest of Mykonos. It is a gentle walk, that requires a standard level of physical condition. Here hidden in the wild forest of brushwood vegetation we will discover amongst the rock roses various species of aromatic herbs, such as wild Mykonian Oregano (Throuby) and Thyme, an incredible feast to the senses, set in a wild and dramatic scenery, offering some of the most spectacular views to be found anywhere on the island.​

The trail leads us down to a hidden pristine beach, where the fine golden sand reaches down to crystal clear waters. In this beautiful and peacefull environment we allow ourselves to listen to the incredible "sound of silence", (no cars or bikes or loud music, at all !!!) only the natural sounds of the waves, the wind and the passing birds. ​

A wallk up to the top the herbal hill reveals the magnificent view of the open sea and the wild Mykonian North coastline, with it's dramatic coves and rock formations, breaking every now and then into small hidden secret sandy beaches. Feasting our eyes on the amazing play of blue and turqoise colours of the Aegean waters we are captivated by its beauty.​

After our exilarating hike, it's time to take the trail back to our base where we will be outfitted with our snorkeling gear (any one less confident may also use a PFD) and head off for our snorkeling adventure in the crystal clear Aegean sea. Our guides will give an introductory lesson to snorkeling for those who need it and then accompany the group pointing out areas of interest like the beautiful and very important posidonia sea grass meadows and various fishes (Sea Breams, Rainbow wrasses, Flounders, Dream fish(Cow Bream)and Groupers) as well as Sea Urchins and Octupus.

For those who wish to visit a traditional family Greek Orthodox chappel, the 19th century Agios Sostis twin chapel is the perfect spot to light a candle for your beloved ones and to infuse yourself in the mystical atmosphere of this renowned chappel, built in 1870 by a sailor who's merchant ship was miraculously saved from the vicious waves of a heavy storm. The story goes that after praying to Agios Sostis (Saint Saviour) his ship was tossed out of the wild sea into the sheltered Panormos Bay and the boat and its crew were saved.

Mykonos island has a rich and vibrant culture, as well as a dramatic geological past. Exploring this pristine environment, hiking over the wild hills and along the dramatic shores and diving into the endless blue, our Mykonos Outdoors Classic tour, guarantees to craft a memorable experience, which you will remember for a lifetime.

C.    Traditional Greek Lunch

After our activities and before the invigerating archery session we have worked up a healthy appetite and we settle ourselves at our base in a delightful outdoor shaded picnic area, set above traditional dry stoned walled terraces planted with organic herbs and vegetables, with a lovely view over the magical Panormos Bay and beach of Agios Sostis.

This is where your delicious Greek lunch, with the famous Gyro Plate, or another traditional Greek meal * (), will be delivered to you by a well known Mykonian Greek Taverna. Enjoying your freshly prepared Greek lunch while savoring the natural landscape, will be the perfect way to celebrate the magical experience on the Mykonos Outdoors classic tour.​

(The lunch is provided and delivered directly to you by licenced Mykonian food providers. Vegetarian/Vegan option also available. We reserve the right to adjust the menu, and the eating area, depending on weather conditions, availability, group size and other possible options. An 1 1/2lt bottle of mineral water provided for each person.) 

D.    Archery  taster  session

For those who wish to extend their Mykonos Classic Outdoors experience with target archery, they can add the archery taster session supplement to their initial Mykonos Classic Outdoors package. Our GB Archery, certified instructors will provide a fun and enjoyable taster session at our outdoor archery range, set above the idyllic beach of Agios Sostis.

During your archery session you'll be shown the basics of using the bow and arrows by your instructor, including how to comfortably hold the bow, load the arrow and then release. Once everyone has fired off a round of arrows and it's completely safe, the instructor will allow you over the shooting line to go and have a close up look at your target so you can see exactly where the arrows landed and how close to the coveted bullseye you are. Then it's back to aim and release with bullseye being your goal.

Archery experiences with our Mykonos Kayak team last a total of around 90-minutes, it is  an ideal activity for beginners, suitable for all ages and abilities, no previous experience is necessary. All the gear you need is provided making the sport accessible. It is a fun and at times competitive experience, as we will all challenge ourselves to improve our skills!
