2023 Porsche 911 Safari spy shots and video: High-riding sports car hits the 'Ring

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Perhaps the best sign the crossover craze has taken a step too far, Porsche is out testing a high-riding 911.

Porsche hasn't confirmed plans to launch a high-riding 911, though the automaker's sales and marketing chief, Detlev von Platen, said in a 2018 interview that such a car “ could be a good idea .” He even said such a car could be launched as a limited-edition model.

The testers are riding on much taller suspension than normal, which stands out in our latest shots thanks to a prototype for an updated 911 Carrera also present. The testers are also fitted with widened wheel arches and on some of them there is a prominent rear spoiler whose design has never been seen before. Some of the earlier testers also had thick foam lining the wheel arches, a feature typically seen when testing suspension systems. It helps the engineers determine how close the wheels get to the vehicle body. It's possible the foam was also added to hide whatever suspension setup was being used.

Porsche has been down this road before. Recall, the automaker launched the 911 SC Safari rally car in 1978. Porsche also built a trio of 911-based 953 rally cars which it entered in the Dakar Rally and eventually took home the victory.

The popularity of those early rally cars has led to some companies offering Safari-style conversions for old 911s . Several famous Porsche tuning houses, such as Gemballa , Ruf and Singer , have also teased their own modern successors.

Porsche itself investigated the idea of a modern 911 Safari with a secret concept developed in 2012 . Known as the 911 Vision Safari, the concept was based on the 991-generation 911 but never ended up receiving the green light for production. It looks like this won't be the case with the current 992-generation 911.

Porsche 911 Vision Safari (2012)

Porsche 911 Vision Safari (2012)

The 911 Vision Safari concept featured raised suspension and flared wheel arches, just like we see on these testers. It also had underbody protection and roof-mounted lights.

A Safari-style 911 from Porsche would likely be aimed at buyers in markets like China and Russia, where drivers are often faced with poor road conditions that make it difficult to daily a low-slung sports car, hence the popularity of performance crossovers in those markets. We’re sure a few would turn up in the U.S., too, given the popularity of high-riding models here. Heck, it could even prove popular in Porsche's home market of Germany where parking with two wheels up on the curb is often necessary. Currently we expect the car to be revealed in 2022 as a 2023 model. Lamborghini is also working on a similar concept, using the Huracan as the basis .

2023 Porsche 911 Safari looks production-ready in new spy photos

The high-riding 911 has been a long time coming.

new safari 911

A prototype Porsche 911 Safari looking mighty close to production-ready has been spied undergoing winter testing. Porsche's high-riding, thick-sidewalled, all-wheel-drive 911 prototype has been testing for what feels like an eternity at this point, but judging from what we see here, that wait is just about over.

Strictly speaking, not much has changed since we first shared photos of a lifted 911 testing more than a year ago. The latest prototype retains the earlier tester's bumper-exit exhaust (not the quad-tip, under-bumper setup of the 911 Vision Safari Concept Porsche showed last year) and the vaguely whale-tail-like rear spoiler, so the fundamentals were clearly in place long before the sheetmetal was finalized.

Porsche 911 Safari prototype

Other departures from the Safari concept include fully molded fenders (rather than bolt-on flares) and a set of mesh wheels instead of the Fuchs style. The concept's fender-top vents are also absent. If you ask us, the real deal also looks like it has a bit more vertical "heft" to it, likely due to sheetmetal designed for the real world, where aerodynamic performance and drag are inescapable considerations in the design process.

Porsche has been threatening to deliver a lifted 911 based on the Carrera 4 (the basic all-wheel-drive variant, for the uninitiated) for about a decade now . Indeed, when the Vision Safari was shown, Porsche acknowledged that it has been testing such variants in 2012 on the same gravel roads it uses develop the Cayenne and Macan SUVs. Given the apparent completeness of this particular example, we expect to hear something more concrete about Porsche's plans before the year is out. Stay tuned.

Porsche Tests Safari-Style 911 Prototypes on the Side of a Volcano in Chile

A lifted ride height, chunky oversize tires, and other off-road hardware help take the 911 to new heights—literally.

lifted porsche 911 prototype driving on the side of a volcano

  • The prototypes were heavily modified versions of the 911 Carrera 4S , which has all-wheel drive and 443 horsepower.
  • Along with stripped-down interiors and safari-esque styling, the prototypes scaled the volcano with an enhanced drivetrain and a handy winch.

The Ojo del Salado in Chile is the highest volcano in the world. With slopes made of treacherous terrain and areas where temperatures are well below freezing, it's the last place anyone would expect to see a Porsche 911 . Well, look again, because as these photos show, Porsche has literally taken its iconic sports car to new heights by testing a pair of safari-style 911 prototypes on the side of a volcano. Are they a sneak peek at the rumored Dakar version? It kinda seems that way.

Not Your Lawyer's 911

Obviously, the two prototypes involved in this wild experiment aren't ordinary 911s. While they're both based on the 443-hp all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S, the 992-generation coupes have been heavily modified. Porsche did keep their original seven-speed manual gearboxes, though. Bravo! On the other hand, the rest of the cars are barely recognizable with their extensive exterior alterations that include flared fenders, meaty off-road tires, rooftop cargo racks, and custom liveries. One of the latter's color schemes is the same as Porsche's 963 LMDh race car and the other features a 911 theme created by Weissach designers.

Volcano-Scaling Hardware

Fitted with heavy-duty portal axles, the 911 prototypes have a towering 13.7 inches of ground clearance. That's a half-inch more than the Ford Bronco Raptor . The high-riding Porsches also feature lower gear ratios for improved crawling ability at low speeds and manual locking diffs for max traction. The 911s have underbody protection made of tough heat-resistant synthetic fibers, too. We're not sure if it can protect against lava, but the Ojo del Salado is a dormant volcano—so we're told.

porsche 911 prototype on big off road tires

It's not clear what type of suspension the 911 prototypes are using, other than it's clearly not a stock setup. It buoys a quartet of 12.2-inch-wide tires, all of which are mechanically linked by a device that Porsche calls a "warp connector." We're told it's designed to maintain maximum traction during extreme wheel articulation. Should either of the lifted 911s get stuck (as seen below), both have a front-mounted winch to yank 'em out.

How's the Weather Up There?

The team that tested the Dakar-esque 911 prototypes was led by adrenaline junkie, er, adventurer and endurance racer Romain Dumas. He took the jacked-up sports cars as high as 19,708 feet. Not only were temperatures said to be around -22 degrees Fahrenheit, but the air was paper thin. The journey included such obstacles as boulder-strewn slopes, ice fields, and walls of snow. You know, typical stuff that 911 drivers encounter. However, Porsche says Dumas and his team accomplished their mission.

"This was a truly memorable and special moment in a place that's both beautiful and brutal at the same time," said Dumas. "I guess the only machines anywhere in the world higher than us today were aircraft!"

Porsche is testing its high-riding 911 in the very places it expects owners to use it most.

Porsche has been testing its highly anticipated Safari 911 for some time now. The first time we saw a test mule of the new model was over a year ago when Porsche arrived at the Nürburgring with a peculiar prototype. Since then, we've seen dozens of spy shots and videos of the car. This newest clip out of Scandinavia is our best look yet at the 911 Safari in near-production form.

The taller ride height is only the beginning of what we can spot. There are also reworked front and rear bumpers, specific wheels, and a wing that looks to be borrowed from one of the company's optional aero kits. Powertrain remains a mystery, though from the sounds of it, expect to see a variant of the car's twin-turbo flat-six appear in the production model.

We expect Porsche to reveal this 911 variant sometime this year, considering how close it looks to production form in this video. In an ideal world, it'll be available with a manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive, though at this point that's just hopeful speculation. We'll have to wait until the car is official to find out for sure.

New Rugged Porsche 911 Safari Looks Ready To Hit The Dirt

Looks like Porsche is finally preparing to unleash a new 911 Safari off-roader.

911 Carrera

The wait for the new 911 GT3 is nearly over as Porsche will present the next-generation version of the track-focused sports car this year. This seemingly isn't the only new 911 variant Porsche is plotting, however. Last October, Porsche was caught on video testing a mysterious high-riding 911 with styrofoam in the wheel arches at the Nurburgring, leading to speculation the German automaker is preparing to unleash a new rally-ready 911 Safari.

Several Porsche tuners such as Singer have already shown off new custom off-roaders based on the 911 , so it's only a matter of time before Porsche capitalizes on the demand.

Like the test model we saw last year, this new prototype has wider wheel arches at the front and rear fenders. The front bumper also appears to have been tweaked to accommodate a higher ground clearance to make the 911 more capable off-road.

More changes can be found at the back, where the license plate has moved up, a redesigned bumper has been fitted, and the exhaust pipes are in a more central position. Presumably, the new 911 Safari will be based on the all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4S . In stock form, the 911 4S packs a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six producing 443 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, but the Safari variant could have more power.

Porsche built a 911 Safari based on the 991-generation 911 back in 2012. Dubbed the 911 Vision Safari , the rugged 911 was inspired by iconic Porsche rally cars from the 1970s but it sadly never made it into production. It was only showcased to the public last year, but it shows that Porsche has been thinking of building a new 911 Safari for a long time.

It now looks like Porsche's vision will be turned into a reality, but it remains to be seen if the new 911 Safari will be a permanent addition to the 992-generation 911 range or a limited-edition model.

What Are Safari Porsche 911s And Where Did They Come From?

Exploring where the Safari 911 phenomenon began is really taking a walk through the model's entire history.

When Porsche released the 911 to replace the 356 in 1964, not even the most optimistic fans at Stuttgart or around the world could have predicted that the famous model would still be in production over five decades later. Over many generations and many technological advancements later, the 911's iconic profile and rear-engined layout make it a stalwart and effective sports car to this day .

A brand-new 992-generation 911 might sound like a great way to spend a couple hundred thousand dollars, but so does a meticulously maintained, early air-cooled 911 with its smaller size and stylish design. The fact that values across the 911's history remain impressive is a testament to Porsche's engineering prowess, proving that manufacturers can keep a model relevant by sticking to the original recipe while adding improvements along the way.

But in modern times, the Porsche 911 has acquired another niche culture: the trend of taking a 911 and lifting it, bolting on mud flaps and rally lights, and calling it a Safari 911.

Going Back In Time

The 911 emerged onto the market in the early-1960s (it was originally called the 901 but that name had to be ditched to keep Peugeot happy) as a more powerful sports car than the outgoing 356, with a new design that took Porsche a step forward into the future. With a pair of cylinders added onto the 356's flat-four (which was very similar to a car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the Volkswagen Beetle), the 911 entered the market with a low center of gravity and curb weight thanks to its air-cooled flat-six.

The early 911 was yet another car that proved how much more fun driving a lightweight car is than a powerful car and it actually proved itself popular among privateer rally racers of the period, competing against the likes of the Alpine A110, with its similar engine layout. While Porsche was experiencing success on the racetrack with mid-engined cars like the 904, 906, and 917, the 911 steadily advanced in power and performance on the private market.

By 1984, Porsche had taken the 911 into the G-Body era and decided to modify an impact-bumper 911 into a car that could compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally. With an all-wheel-drive system to help counteract the pendulous rear end, the 953 was born—and then quickly replaced by the 959, which added water-cooled heads, a more advanced suspension system, and a pair of turbochargers. The 959 established a new era for Porsche , though it never competed in Group B before the class was terminated due to safety concerns. But Porsche took the learnings it had acquired building a rally car that ended up being the world's fastest production road-going car, as well, and dropped all the knowledge right back into the 911.

Taking On Rally Racing

For the late-1980s, Porsche introduced the Carrera 4 with all-wheel drive to the 964 generation's lineup—before the rear-wheel-drive version. For the 993 gen, the range-topping Turbo and Turbo S variants had received all-wheel-drive to help average drivers tame their massive torque in the hopes of coaxing down the old "Widow Maker" moniker of the 930 Turbo.

By the late-1990s, Porsche was hard at work transforming the 911's entire architecture—it was a move that proved highly divisive among Porsche purists, many of whom lamented the departure away from air-cooled engines towards water-cooling . And don't even get Porsche fans started on the 996 generation's headlights, IMS bearing issues, and all the shared interior design details with the Boxster.

But the 996 was nonetheless a faster, lighter car than the outgoing 993, with a lower center of gravity and lower production costs. The 996 gen also included a Carrera 4, a Carrera 4S, and the Turbo with all-wheel drive.

Looking back at Porsche's variegated history in both motorsport and over the 911's production advancements, the current trend of building Safari 911s starts to make a bit more sense. After all, the 911's entire rear-engine layout might seem like it's a group of nonsensical blowhards clinging to tradition more than actual performance but in reality, the 911's rear-engined layout makes it fun to blast around corners when there's a bit less traction.

A few Safari 911 builders, like Leh Keen in America and Tuthill Porsche in the UK, actually do build up vintage cars that can be enjoyed off-road today . But the other side of the Safari 911 story comes down, as most things do, to money. As Porsche 911 values have risen stratospherically, fans of the brand might brag that 75% of all Porsches ever built are still on the road—but that means there are a ton of Porsches on the road! And any Cars and Coffee event worth its salt will no doubt be chock-full of both vintage Porsches and modern GT3 RS variants.

So anyone who wants to stand out in the Porsche community—and who has the money and time to invest in such a project—can do much worse than building or paying someone else to build a rally-inspired 911. Just watch Matt Farah pilot his Safari 911 around the mean streets of Los Angeles for a look at how these cars are meant to be used.

Of course, most sports car owners never push their cars even close to the limit and Porsche owners are no different. Still, the thought of a classic 911 being pushed right to the edge of lift-off throttle oversteer on a gnarly rally stage is clearly enough of a dream to inspire these builders to keep on building.

Porsche 911 Vision Safari

Year: 2012      Devolopment stage: Drivable prototype

“We believe that there is hardly any other car brand that can combine sports car and off-road characteristics as credibly as Porsche,” says Chief Designer Michael Mauer. In the 1970s, the Porsche 911 had already proved its astonishing off-road capabilities in the legendary East African Safari Rally. The race took competitors on a journey covering almost 5,000 km across the Kenyan wilderness. In 1978, Porsche works drivers Björn Waldegård and Vic Preston Jr. were right up in the leading group in their Porsche 911 SC Safari, which boasted increased ground clearance, all-round reinforcement and some pretty characteristic Martini stripes. They proved that the air-cooled 911 is almost as unstoppable in the desert as it is on a motorway or a race track. The images of these Porsche 911 Safari cars covered in the red dust of the African savannah, splashing through water holes and mud pools will never be forgotten.

And that is why the Porsche design team decided to pay tribute to the legendary off-road sports car with a contemporary re-interpretation in 2012. The Porsche 911 Vision Safari was created on the basis of the 991 generation of the 911. With its raised suspension, reinforced wheel housings, massive bumpers and a spartan rally cockpit with race seats and roll cage, it fully reflects its historic rally predecessor. The designers even planned a special shelf mounted above a fan behind the seats – to cool down your crash helmet between especially hot stages.

The Porsche 911 Vision Safari completed its maiden drive “Out of Africa” on the gravel track at the Weissach test facility, where normally the Porsche Cayenne and Macan prove their off-road capability. Chief Designer Michael Mauer was the co-driver in the Safari 911, with its uniquely soft suspension setup, when it performed its first drift and remembers enthusiastically: “I have rarely had so much fun before!”

New 2024 Porsche 911 Safari: Speculation and Overview

2024 porsche 911 safari: speculation and overview.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari – Porsche is a car brand with several models, one of which is the 911. The 2022 Porsche 911 has many variants: Carrera, Targa, Turbo, and others. However, we found that it used to be a Porsche 911 with a Safari variant. What is it like? Will they make it again?

We found that the Porsche 911 Safari existed in the 1900s, but we don’t know when the car was last launched. However, we hope that Porsche will relaunch a car with that name. To be more precise, we expect 2024 is time for the coming 2024 Porsche 911 Safari, and that’s expected to be pretty big news. On this occasion, we will speculate about the car that is expected to be present.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari

Exterior Design

In exterior design, it doesn’t look like it’s expected to differ much from the other 911s. However, it looks like a classic style with 4 headlights like the Safari, which used to be a good choice. This will be a significant difference compared to other Porsche 911. However, the style must be adjusted to look modern and fit today. Maybe that’s what we expected.

Interior Design

The car’s interior is also not expected to be much different from the others. With an attractive and sophisticated design and equipped with the latest features that support operations. The infotainment screen measures 11 inches, with various other features. The chairs used have a sporty design and are made of high-quality materials. It looks like 2 seats are enough, and there may be some variants with 4 seats.

2024 Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Engine and Performance

We cover this section based on the 2022 911 Carrera GTS. The engine used is 3.0L with 4 cylinders. It can produce 473 hp @ 6,500 rpm, and 420 lb-ft of torque @ 2,300 rpm. Those are the standard specs we expect for this car. Even so, it is hoped that there will be a higher variant to make it more interesting, and people will have more variants to choose from.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The infotainment feature is essential for every car, including the 2024 Porsche 911 Safari. It looks like an 11-inch infotainment screen is enough. Of course, it can be connected to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Next are Bluetooth, USB port, Porsche Communication Management (PCM), and others. Just expect the latest and most advanced features of its time so that it can satisfy users.

As a car expected to come in 2024, we hope the 911 Safari is equipped with interesting features. That way, people will be more interested in buying it. The standard features that every Porsche 911 has, of course, must exist. Other features that make this car more attractive are also expected. For a list of standard 911 features, please search for more information.

2024 Porsche 911 Safari Pricing and Release Date

The cheapest 2022 Porsche 911, according to edmunds.com, is around $100,000. We think $135,000 is a fair price for the cheapest variant of the Porsche 911 Safari. That’s just my speculation. At the same time, some people may think that it is cheaper or more expensive than that. As for the release date, we think the 2nd quarter of 2024 is a good time.

911 outages reported in 4 states as emergency call services go down temporarily

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 12:41 PM EDT / CBS News

Multiple states lost access to emergency dispatchers late last night, meaning that residents could not call 911.

The issue affected parts of Nebraska, Texas and Nevada, and all of South Dakota. The outage was first reported around 10 p.m. local time. Service was restored around midnight, officials said.

In Texas, the City of Del Rio Police Department said the outage was because of "an outage with a major cellular carrier." The department did not specify which cellular carrier was responsible.

Lumen, a company that provides emergency communications services, said the outage was "due to a third-party company installing a light pole" and was "unrelated" to their own services. Lumen did not specify which third-party company was involved.

An investigation into the outage is underway.

Affected areas recommended that residents call non-emergency numbers amid the outage.

In Las Vegas, Nevada, officials said that 911 calls from landlines were not working, but that dispatchers could still see incoming calls. Dispatchers worked to call back numbers that dialed in, officials said on social media . According to Henderson County, Nevada officials , texts to the 911 number were coming through even when the phone line wasn't working.

Officials told CBS News that all attempted calls made during the outage were responded to.

They’re going loco for locusts.

A South Carolina sheriff’s department has been swarmed with 911 calls about incessant siren sounds — only to find out that the concerned citizens are complaining about cicadas.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster put the community’s anxiety to rest Tuesday, saying the “noise in the air that sounds like a siren, or a whine, or a roar” is nothing more than the bugs emerging from more than a decade of slumber.

A cicada on a leaf.

“Although to some, the noise is annoying, they pose no danger to humans or pets,” Foster wrote on Facebook.

“Unfortunately it is the sounds of nature.”

The screaming-like sound that South Carolinians were reporting is the sound of male critters singing to attract new mates.

Trillions of red-eyed periodical cicadas  are emerging from underground in the eastern US this month, including the rare convergence of two periodical broods that stay underground for either 13 years or 17 years.

It will be the first time in 221 years that the two types of cicadas –  brood XIX and XIII –  have risen from the ground at the same time, back when Thomas Jefferson was president, and it is not expected to happen again until 2244.

The noisiest cicadas were moving around the rural county of about 38,000 people, about 40 miles northwest of Columbia, prompting calls from different locations as Tuesday wore on, Foster said.

Some people have even flagged down deputies to ask what the noise is all about, Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said.

Their collective songs can be as loud as jet engines and scientists who study them often wear earmuffs to protect their hearing.

NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. – The emergence of cicadas in South Carolina has caused a disturbance so loud that it prompted uneasy residents to call police for help.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said they had several calls Tuesday about a noise in the air that sounded like "a siren, or a whine or a roar."

"The sound is cicadas ," deputies informed residents. On hot, sunny days, the brood's collective sounds can reach the volume of a lawnmower or motorcycle.

"Cicadas are a superfamily of insects that appear each spring," the sheriff's office added. "The nymphs have lived underground for 13-17 years, and now this time they are hatching."

TRILLIONS OF CICADAS ARE WEEKS AWAY FROM THEIR EMERGENCE

Two groups of cicadas, Brood XIX (13-year cycle) and Brood XIII (17-year cycle), are expected to emerge when ground temperatures reach around 65 degrees.

Brood XIX can be found from southern Iowa to Georgia and South Carolina, while Brood XIII will emerge in communities across the Midwest from northern Iowa to Ohio.

The emergence is not simultaneous and started in April in southern locales and is expected to begin in June in more northern areas.

"Although to some, the noise is annoying, they pose no danger to humans or pets," Newberry County deputies said. "Unfortunately, it is the sounds of nature."

Widespread 911 Outages Are Reported in Four States

Residents in parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas and Nevada were unable to call the emergency number, officials said. Service was later restored in Las Vegas, Nebraska and South Dakota.

A large-scale outage on Wednesday affected residents’ ability to call the 911 emergency number in parts of Nebraska and Texas, the entire state of South Dakota and Las Vegas, according to local authorities.

In portions of Nevada, South Dakota and Nebraska, an outage was caused by a “third party company” that was installing a light pole, Lumen Technologies, a telecommunications company, said in an emailed statement on Thursday.

Lumen did not say where the third-party company had installed the light pole. Lumen does not provide 911 services in Texas, a spokesman said.

The Federal Communications Commission said in a post on social media that the 911 outages were under investigation.

In Las Vegas, calls to 911 on landline phones and mobile phones were not connecting for about two hours before service was restored at about 9 p.m., the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said on social media.

During the outage, dispatchers could see attempts to make calls from mobile phones and would call residents back, the police said, and all attempted calls had been answered.

The outage also affected southern Nevada, the Nevada State Police said.

Outages were also reported by the local police departments of Dundy, Kearney, and Howard in Nebraska. All three said between 12 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. on Facebook that service had been restored in Chase County, the local authorities said that the line was down across the state for all cellular carriers except T-Mobile, but landlines could still call through.

The police department of Del Rio, Texas, said that customers of one cellular provider were having issues calling 911. A spokeswoman said that the issue there was only affecting T-mobile customers, and that service had not yet been restored to those customers at 1:15 a.m.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety said on social media that the outage was affecting residents throughout the entire state. In most parts of the state, residents could still text 911, and call their local police and county sheriff offices on their nonemergency phone lines, the department said. Among the areas affected were Sioux Falls and Rapid City, where officials provided alternate numbers before the line returned.

At about 11 p.m., the South Dakota Highway Patrol said on social media that service had been restored.

At a news conference on Thursday, officials in Sioux Falls said that 911 service was lost from 7:59 p.m. to 10:38 p.m. They said that the cause of the failure was unknown.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the outage. In February, a widespread AT&T outage temporarily cut off connections for users across the United States for many hours, leaving FirstNet , the emergency communications network, out of service. Police forces like the New York Police Department were unable to make calls or send emails.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari: Four New Concepts, Each with a Different Purpose and Palette

Plus, it's a great way to get some public input on stylistic themes, accessories, and functional add-ons that might already be in consideration for production.
