The Russians are coming

There’s something you notice pretty quickly when you get to the beach town of Nha Trang in Vietnam – everything’s in Russian!

Nha Trang, Vietnam

Walking along the footpath, hungry, I do what I often do. I see a menu displayed outside a restaurant and so I stop to see if it’s the kind of thing that takes my fancy.

There are lots of small street food options in Vietnam but they don’t normally have menus – just simply “Pho” or “Banh Mi” on a sign or a wall. If something is written down on paper, it’s normally for the benefit of tourists and written in English.

Which is why I get such a shock when I start to flick through this particular menu and can’t understand a single world. And that’s not because it’s written in Vietnamese. The whole thing is in Russian!

It’s something I come across again and again here in the coastal city of Nha Trang. Menus in Russian, signs in windows in Russian, even entire shopfronts printed in Russian.

It’s clear where the tourists in Nha Trang are coming from.

In fact, the Vietnamese coast has become extremely popular with Russian tourists. There are now more than 700 direct flights each year.

When the snow covers the motherland, they can escape to the sun and surf of an Asian playground. Last year, there were 200,000 visitors to Vietnam from Russia.

It is noticeable here in Nha Trang and at first I’m not sure what I think about it.

I ponder it for a while, turning it over in my head as I browse all the bottles of vodka for sale in the convenience store and smile at all the unnaturally blonde women wearing too much make up for the beach.

In some respects, it is no different than going to Bali and having everything written in English for Australians, or going to the Portuguese coast where mock English pubs have been built for the Brits.

You would find American chains in Cancun and all across the Caribbean.

I guess I don’t notice this as much, though, because I am an English speaker who has probably been brought up with similar Western influences.

It makes me feel more comfortable when I can read the menu or recognise a brand. So I can see how it must feel nice for the Russian tourists to get this sense in Nha Trang.

But, on the other hand, signs and menus in English are not necessarily out there just to help native speakers like Australians or British.

English is the lingua franca for travellers and people from plenty of countries know enough to find it useful. It stands out when something is in another language – it feels wrong, I’ve got to admit.

Development in Nha Trang

The beach at Nha Trang is nice – much nicer than I remember it from my last trip here about a decade ago.

The sand is relatively clean and the water refreshing. It’s not overly crowded and it’s close to hotels, bars and restaurants.

From the sand, I can see plenty of big developments going up. There’s a rush to get new hotels, even bigger than the ones that exist already, with hopes that more Russians will be coming in the next few years.

There is a slight problem – the recent fall in the value of the rouble is making it more expensive for people to travel overseas from Russia. However, Vietnam is so cheap that it’s not expected to have a major impact in the long term, just soften the numbers slightly for now.

In fact, a lot of the Russians who can afford to travel on family holidays – because there are clearly a lot of families here – have a fair bit of money.

You can also see the impact that’s having in Nha Trang. Prices for food in a lot of the restaurants are higher than in other parts of the country and much of the food on offer is at the more luxurious end (think lobster or tortoise!).

One morning, I’m sitting down by the beach looking out at the surf (it’s pretty small) when a sunglasses vendor comes up to me. These are the guys with huge boards filled with more than a hundred sunglasses that they carry over their shoulder.

We have a bit of a chat and he tells me about the Russian tourists. While Australians like me travel to a few places in Vietnam and just stay in Nha Trang for a matter of days, he says, the Russians will come here and stay for weeks – maybe even a month.

It doesn’t really bother him who comes and for how many days – as long as they buy sunglasses.

And, ultimately, I guess that’s the point. We, us tourists, are all guests here and we can’t expect anything to be any particular way.

If the local Vietnamese businesses choose to make certain nationalities welcome, that’s their right, and it’s actually quite nice in a way (even if it’s surely so they can make a bit more money).

I’ll just have to point at what I want to eat.

There are lots of great things to do in Nha Trang, though, and I would recommend having a look at one of these options:

THE BEST ACCOMMODATION IN NHA TRANG

The biggest range of accommodation is right in the centre of town, near the beach, but there are a few gems further out of Nha Trang.

If you’re looking for a clean and friendly backpacker place,  Dhome Nha Trang  is your best option.

There are so many hotels and the prices change a lot with the seasons.  Seaway Hotel  often has great deals.

I think the most stylish hotel in town is the InterContinental Nha Trang .

But if you want even more luxury, your best bet is the  Mia Resort Nha Trang .

Beautiful city alot of things to do

Yes, it’s true, there is quite a lot to do. I think for most people, though, the beach is the main attraction. I don’t think the other sights it offers are better than in other cities in Vietnam.

All fair if the Russians repay the favour and treat them with respect. Unfortunately, my travels in Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam revealed quite the opposite. Many of the Russian tourists treated the locals (and other non-Russian tourists) with disdain.

It seems that Russian tourists do have that reputation. And I can say that I’ve come across some poor behaviour myself. But I don’t think it’s fair to judge everyone based on a few experiences. Having said that, I do think there is often an attitude of arrogance from travellers who are wealthy but come from countries where a lot of the population isn’t. They take their status overseas on holidays with them (where it is rather irrelevant!!).

Russians do not generally demonstrate respect for other people. Russians treat Russians the same way as they treat Vietnamese, British or anybody else. Country’s latest history is the one to blame. People were treated badly by the government for generations. This defensive approach will go the same way it came. Russians are good people. It is vital for them to see another way. And believe me, they take it on board.

Thanks for your story, very interesting. This catch my eye because I traveled to this place in last year and still impressed.

Thanks for the comment – glad you liked the story!

Russians are the worst travellers by far first rude ,arrogant but they don’t make any effort to learn a new culture or talk with other travellers which is the best part.. How can you learn about new places when you’re head is so far up your ass to see what surrounds you… Ha little Moscow ?? Nah trangh sux because of this am I am pissed I took a 12 hour bus to learn this worst decision I have made traveling.. And yes I do try to talk to them but they just hate it if you’re not Russian… Truth hurts like my bank account after this trip…

Dont paint everyone with the same brush. I’ve seen plenty of arrogance from Norway, UK and other European countries 20 year olds who come to Vietnam and Thailand thinking these countries owe them something. Completely drunk, loud, arrogant with buckets in their hands. The whole backpacker scene has brought some ugliness to these places. Let’s face it, once you mix any culture into the local way of life it will change everyone’s experience

I agree completely with you, Kirill. I have to admit that I have seen some terrible behaviour from Russians but have also seen terrible behaviour from most nationalities (definitely including my own – Australian). It’s not fair to judge people by their race. Having said that, I do find that some nationalities tend to behave worse than others overall in certain places. It’s almost a mob mentality, they egg each other on. The Brits in Spain, Aussies in Bali, Americans in Mexico, etc. Of course, again, that doesn’t mean that everyone is like that but there’s a trend. It’s a shame but it’s probably always going to happen – I think one of the reasons people go in holidays is to have an excuse to behave like that!!

I work for over 2 decates as a tour leader in South east asia and i can tell you. Russians are rude , noisy , inpolite and dont care anyone else as themselves. Everywhere i come with groups of European tourists we never have problems with other groups or cultures exept with Russians. Always problems. There are now even hotels in Thailand where no Russians are allowed. I read somwhere in the comments” dont paint everyone with the same brush” well. You have no idea what you talkiing about. I do. Russians are from nature rude and inpolite, its grown into their culture. So first they have to learn how to behave and respect other people before leaving Russia. Or i will stay away from places where Russian go .

I’ve not been to Vietnam yet so cannot comment on that but I have been to many other countries all over the world and seen tourist behaviour in many forms. On my most recent trip to Thailand, I was totally appalled at the behaviour of many, many of the Russian tourists; they were unbelievably rude, just in their general day to day behaviour and when they had drink taken, they way they treated their Thai hosts was disgusting.

Love this story. It’s so perfectly on point. I’m here right now and have been feeling pretty disappointed. I signs up for a tour of Vietnam so that what I was expecting. If I wanted to see russians and there cult ire I would of gone to Russia. Can’t wait to get out of this town!!

My partner and I are currently staying in Vinpearl in Nha Trang – and we’ve never felt so homesick before! I honestly thought that I was just being petty over little things… not saying thank you when my partner holds the door open for them, not waiting till I was done rinsing sand off myself at the open showers by the beach, pushing to line up to the speed boats and not smiling when you walked pass are only just a few things… And what was worse was that we were getting the same attitude from Vietnamese people, but I understand that it reciprocates from them hosting Russians. In comparison to when we went to Thailand (they had the most beautiful people)- the Russian culture has ruined this trip for me. We’ve tried to remain positive, but it’s disheartening! I do hope it changes, because we love our pho noodle soups!

Russians have to be the rudest most arrogant and aggressive tourists I’ve ever encountered in my travels. They unfortunately seem to have invaded Cuba like the plague. No more peaceful cheap vacations to Cuba.

i dispute the comment about Russians staying a month, yes some do but rarely, most are package tourists and stay a week or 10 days drink themselves to death from morning to night on the beach and go home after. Thats fact.

Thank you for the story, so did you find some good restaurants with English speaking waiters or waitresses or menu? Need some good recommendations please.

My wife and I are in Nha Trang now for a month. We’ve been here so far for a week. Russians are everywhere, but the majority of tourists are still ‘Asian’. We haven’t noticed anything more about the Russians other than they don’t smile. Nha Trang is still a beautiful destination with great food. You may even run into the odd Australian? We’re the ones that smile a lot 😉

I am currently in Nha Trang now and everything you say is true EXCEPT that the beaches are clean. I wish I could send a picture showing how disgusting the water and beach is because it full of plastic, bottles, trash, dead fish etc. I literally did not want to get in the water !!

And someone comment about the Thais are so lovely.. i know Thailand very well, lived there for years had a few Thai GF’s, still have some friends there. It is the tourists that change the locals. In every city in the world, in Amsterdam you buy fake cocaine (i am from there) and in Phuket or in all other tourists places in Thailand many Thais are not friendly and rude, and in Roma around the Trevi fountain you wouldn’t find the authentic Italian hospitality.. Nha Trang is no difference. GROW UP PEOPLE!

Hi everyone, I am Korean. Yesterday, I enjoyed scuba diving on the same boat as a few Russians. They were friendly, but not rude. There are prejudices that can arise depending on the purpose of meeting someone who travels, but there are no places in any country where there are only good people, right? The bizarre behavior in places where people may lose their temper seems like a common sight for people from any country when their numbers are high. There is a Korean proverb that an loach makes the whole stream murky. I hope the experience of encountering a small number of people with strange personalities does not make you despise a large number of people. I hope today is a good day for you who read this.

Spot on! I am from The Netherlands and I found all these ‘Russian Mafia are taking over Nha Trang’ posts. In the ‘west’ we expect everything to be English or ‘local’. Great post!

My family & I spent a week holiday inn in Nha Trang in May 2018. The Russian presence was strong. They did their thing, we did ours. Until the day my 7yr old grandson in the blink of an eye decided to travel down the escalator in a shopping centre like a child on a banister on a staircase. He quickly started to lose control on the moving hand rail. Leaving my son & his partner helpless to reach him in time an heroic Russian man on the escalator abandoned his shopping & plucked our boy to the safety of his arms delivering him to my son moments later at the bottom. The Russian man spoke no English. The only way my son could communicate hie gratitude was with a very firm handshake. We will always be grateful to this man. Our brief experience with a Russian while on holiday in Vietnam will always be remembered with much gratitude & appreciation.

Man, firstly you lack the basic i fo about why there are so many Russians in the first place :). Just south is another big city which in the past had a Russian naval base. Also there is a noticeable Russian community. It has even more Rusian than Nha Trang. Have you been to China or Japan? In China you will not read anything .. not even the name of your hotek or the number of bus station.. same in Japan. Same in Greece 😉 it’s not hard to learn those few letters and you can read the Russian names also let me tell you the shops that are in Russian are in Russian for a reason.. they can’t speak English so don’t go there 🙂

Oh, i wish i read this post before coming here for 6 days! So disappointed with this situation, luckily leaving tomorrow night.

Pity the murdering rapists can’t be confined to there own country. So the rich Russians are are sunning themselves while their armed forces are committing war crimes, bombing Ukrainian civilians and kidnapping Ukrainian children. Avoid Vietnam and Turkey I suggest.

The arrogant murdering thieves have also taken over parts of Bali. Treat everything and everybody like shit. Except for their painted lady’s who are busy stealing from the stores and consequently raising the prices for everyone. They seem intent on recreating the same horrific society that they escaped.

Okay, let’s go. Firstly I have read each and every comment above, and can elaborate on many points mentioned. Please contact me if you need further information.

I assume all to most of you are tourists who came to visit Nha Trang between a few days to a month. I have been living here for 6 months working as an English teacher and I’ve been a teacher for 8 years, 7 years in Asia years (Vietnam 6, Cambodia 1). Arriving July 2023 I first noticed the strong Korean influence in the city centre. House hunting I chose ‘across the river’ North where buildings & homes are generally nicer and modern.

I moved into Muong Thanh Oceanus 1A, lived there for 6 months, 5 months no problem, 1 month problems, and moved out 2 weeks ago.

I don’t know how to describe this simply but but bare with me. There seems to be an only Russian fetish, trend, challenge, or behavior where Russians in Nha Trang are having extremely loud and intentionally annoying sex non stop 24/7 while using “electronics” also at any time of day. I know that sentence was a lot but that is the tip of the iceberg. Neighbors are more than aggravated and attempt to confront the 2-3 different couples in in different rooms in the building, but the Russians were ready with what seemed to be drills (for both banging and construction), wood, nails, a hammer, s*x toys, whistles, and a karaoke system to take shelter, and prevent the door from ever opening. They did this to 1. Stay safe 2. Annoy people even more. 3. Soundproof the room. 4. Continue with their loud 24/7 ‘banging’ and ‘drilling’ both literally and figuratively.

I lived 1 level up above them. The never stopped, it started on Halloween Oct, 31st (ironic), and they banged at 1230 loud enough for everyone to know but not super loud. The next night I was like daaym, thats spicy. The next night I was like okay it’s been while they should be tired and sleep soon. Then next night and day I was like okay, anytime now. Next day Geeez, then Oh my, next holy shit, next day oh my God, next day oh my God please stop, next I need to sleep, please! Next day you guys are crazy and are making eveone else crazy! And so on..

Being there I did what I could, never shout at rude Russians, it will just escalate. Speak calm and respectful even if they are being complete assholes and they will understand English, maybe never reply, and will be less rude when spoken rather than shouted at. I never shouted once the 1 month I was above them.

I spoke to security too many times, the receptionist, my realtor too many times, my girlfriend and my boss about this issue and they all struggled to understand the seriousness of the agony that was happening to residents there. Security came to hear the loud noises in my room 3 times but these Russians are sneaky and kept perfectly quiet when I had any guest, so security and reception did not want to do anything. I said they are 1 lvl down, but they still wouldn’t do anything. We went there but as the elevator doors open onto level 29, silence. They stop making noise when the elevator opens on their level.

They are very aware of what is happening around their rooms and they respond in noise level to noise that they are not making. I couldn’t make noise in my apartment otherwise they would make some annoying sound, bang harder, build louder, it was exhausting, and my anxiety was high. But the different noises were many, various, loud, intentionally aggravating, drilling, and ‘drilling’. If residents yelled at them they made more noise. Always. No backing down.

Being day 20ish from Halloween, it was affecting my work and sleep, so I had to go stay in a very respectable hotel, Hotel Panorama. I have a friend who works there, so I can book/change rooms anytime if there is too much noise. Guess what…

There was another one there! Not one but at least 3, same as my building. Doing the same thing, same times, same problem. Same type of residents yelling at them day and night, and day, they made the same and some new noises. I can detail these in another comment. I changed room about 6 times because my friend had bookings for hotel guests and I needed to move for them. My friend understood the issue but couldn’t believe that was happening in his building too and he couldn’t hear it until I showed him roughly 2 weeks ago, day 25ish. They were/are also on level 29 I believe, but not sure.

So I finally moved into a quiet beautiful home, my realtor was very helpful and understanding in this situation and tried her best to assist in finding a place of peace. I found a beautiful home Northside just ‘across the river’ not far from the bridge and river, right in front of the Veitnamese military so it’s considered a safe place. I’m moving in to lvl1 and my realtor said a Russian couple is moving into lvl3 two day after me… Two days of peace. And then two weeks of THE SAME THING. same noises, same reaction to noises that I make, same rudeness and disregard to neighbors yelling at them. The difference here’s that 3 Russian couples moved in the same day. One lvl 3 above, one in a hotel nextdoor to my room, and one in a small brick shack type room right below me.

Someone above said it’s the way Russians are raised, they behave this way because that is how they were raised, another said because their government has treated them badly for a long time. Some said they it’s like Americans in Mexico, or Brits in Europe, this is not the same. It’s more.

I would love to comment on all the various loud noises they made but let me know if you’d like to hear them all but here are some. Construction and vandalism, they do not care about breaking the room to block the entrance. They like ‘dropping water’ when I arrive in this home I informed the landlord that the water collector was dropping water 3 levels down, I wonder how or who broke it, any guesses? Last night the parents down the air vent. They make lot of animal sounds, chickens, dogs, cats, birds, and more. Banging and drilling from indoor construction and sex, screaming yelling, and get this and believe it. Because it’s true. I never, never hear the man speak ever. He whistles some device ONLY to people who are very close to their room and to get a reaction out of them. The lady always, I mean ALWAYS speaks in Russian and very loudly not matter if they are resting, banging or building, day and night and day.

As for now I have asked everyone I could ask for help and got none. My gf doesn’t want to hear it anymore, same as my boss. The landlords and realtors believe me but don’t fully understand the problem, and the police? Forget it. I always get told to move house, but im tired of running away from the issue, thst is also inescapable and want to face and slove it. If you have any information for me please let me know otherwise thank you for reading and I’m looking for anyone who has had this experience anywhere else. Bye, wish me luck!

Vietnam tourism welcomes Russian tourists back

nha trang russian tourist

After half a year of stagnation, travel businesses will welcome the first Russian delegations to Vietnam for tourism and relaxation.

Talking to Zing, Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Thanh, Director of Khanh Hoa Tourism Department, said that she is coordinating with businesses to expedite procedures to bring Russian tourists back to Nha Trang.

“This is the event that tourism industry has been waiting for a long time. Partly because of the epidemic and conflict caused the source of visitors from the Russian market to be interrupted, businesses faced difficulties. The return of Russian tourists will bring a breakthrough to tourism industry at the end of year,” said Ms. Thanh.

2 flights per week from Russia

Nguyen Duc Tan, General Director of Anex Vietnam Trading & Tourism Co., Ltd (Anex Vietnam) – a unit specializing in welcoming Russian guests in Vietnam – said that the business has sent a notice to Khanh Hoa Tourism Department about welcoming Russia tourists returned to Vietnam and Nha Trang in October.

Russia is still an important market for Vietnam’s tourism industry. Photo: Xuan Hoat.

General Director of Anex Vietnam said that from October 25, flights will start bringing Russian tourists to Nha Trang. “In the first phase, we plan to have four trips and return each week with about 800 guests. Each group will stay for 7-28 days at 3-5 hotel and resort facilities,” said Mr. Tan.

After the epidemic, a few travel agencies brought Russian tourists to Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa to relax. However, due to the conflict, from March the flights bringing Russian tourists to Vietnam were interrupted.

Besides Anex Vietnam, Pegas Misr Vietnam Travel Co., Ltd is also planning to organize flights to bring Russian tourists to Khanh Hoa in the near future.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Thanh said that Russia is the second largest international tourist market of Khanh Hoa tourism, after China. The fact that businesses bring Russian tourists to Khanh Hoa will “warm up” tourism in Agarwood at the end of the year.

“It is the low season for tourism, so the return of Russian tourists will be a bright spot for the local tourism industry. After the Russian market, there will certainly be more groups of tourists from Korea, Taiwan… coming back to Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa,” said Ms. Thanh.

Tourists from Russia and Eastern Europe have been the main tourist stream of Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa tourism in recent years, just after the Chinese market. In 2019, this locality welcomed 463,000 Russian visitors, accounting for more than 70% of Russian visitors to Vietnam.

Many people are optimistic when Russian guests return to Vietnam on this occasion. They believe that it is golden time to restart one of the important traditional tourist market of Vietnam’s tourism industry.

The European Union (EU) has just agreed to suspend a 2007 travel agreement with Moscow (Russia). This agreement used to make it easier for Russians to get visas. With the above suspension decision, it becomes difficult and expensive for Russian citizens to go to Europe because of stricter regulations.

“The tightening of regulations after the EU suspended its agreement with Russia dating back to 2007 in some respects will be a very good condition for Vietnam to promote and restart the flow of Russian tourists,” Luong Nguyen Khac, Director of a Russian travel agency, said.

According to Khac, statistics show that after the agreement was suspended, Russian travel companies saw a decrease in the number of Russian tourists booking tickets to Europe.

According to data from the travel analytics company ForwardKeys, EU countries such as Italy, Spain, Cyprus and Greece have always been among the top 20 most booked destinations by Russian tourists.

However, this number has dropped rapidly. Olivier Ponti, a representative of ForwardKeys, said that the number of Russian air travel to Europe in the summer is only 26% compared to 2019.

Khanh Hoa tourism earns nearly 11,000 billion VND

Statistics of Khanh Hoa Department of Tourism show that in the first 9 months of the year, the total number of tourists staying in tourism was estimated at 280,000, an increase of 70.6 times over the same period. International visitors are estimated at 40,000 arrivals, an increase of 195.1 times over the same period; Domestic tourists are estimated at 240,000 arrivals, an increase of 63.8 times.

“In the first nine months of the year, Khanh Hoa’s tourism revenue is estimated at nearly 10,800 billion VND, exceeding 170% of the plan,” said Ms. Thanh.

According to Ms. Thanh, at the end of the year, the locality will promote promotion, at the same time embellish and upgrade facilities, and the sites will also invest in new tourism products to serve tourists.

Slow Travel on a Budget

Nha Trang: A Russian Holiday

Posted January 21, 2020

Where To Next?

We’re traveling for six to seven months with no set itinerary. Picking our next destination is always hard. Fun, but hard. It’s like perennially planning a new trip, every week or so.

nha trang russian tourist

For a normal sized trip of a few weeks, I buy destinations travel books, I read travel blogs and forums, and I watch YouTube videos. Ad nauseum. I calculate the weather, the average highs and lows for when we’ll be traveling, determine the dates for shoulder season (our preference), and research all the holidays and festivals that might coincide and impact our trip.  I research budget hotels, carefully balancing cost, location, and facility attributes. I make detailed notes on google docs, identifying both popular sites and hidden gems, complete with open days, hours, costs, and hints to avoid long ticket lines. In short, I plan the heck out of every trip.

Just Get Over It

But when you’re planning as you go, for extended travel, all that, well, most of that, goes out the window. I knew that was the case, but it’s still taken some getting used to. And some letting go.

The Bare Minimum

I still research our accommodations, some more than others. My criteria has gotten honed down to :

  • Location – are things mostly walkable?
  • Cost – I try to keep all SE Asia accommodations under $35 USD a night Often I’m well below that.
  • Air Conditioning – seems like everywhere where this is essential, it’s already included.
  • A private bathroom – I don’t actually mind sharing a bathroom, but a shared bathroom isn’t necessarily close to our room, and I’m not comfortable traveling down long, dark hallways or navigating stairs in the middle of the night, lol.
  • An included breakfast – This is negotiable, but we find it extremely convenient (and economical) to know where we’re getting our coffee & grub first thing in the morning, and many hotels include breakfast, if you look.

No Real Plan

A fellow traveler recently asked us how we decide where we’re going next. That was hard to answer. We do have a few “for sure” destinations we hope to visit in each country. And, as our travels have progressed, we’ve learned that we’d prefer keeping our travel days reasonably short, like a maximum of four to five hours of traveling.

Time to Decide

We’ve explored lots of northern Vietnam and we’re slowing making our way south. We’ve been in Quy Nhon for a week now. It’s a medium sized city on the coast of Vietnam and not touristy at all.   Keeping with our short travel day criteria, Nha Trang is the next logical choice, but it’s reputation as a heavily touristed, party destination, overbuilt with high rise hotels, was a bit daunting.

We don’t do the club scene. In fact, we’re usually in bed by 8 or 9 pm (reading, watching Netflix, or on our laptops). We don’t especially like the Cancun or Miami-type beach scene, but we threw caution to the wind, and headed to Nha Trang.

Once in Nha Trang, I bit the bullet and quickly adapted. High rises everywhere?  Yes . Tourists everywhere? Yes . Hundreds of people on the beach?  Yes . But the good in Nha Trang far outweighed the bad, at least for us.

Tourist-Town

We’ve already spent weeks and weeks in small and medium Vietnamese towns where we’d see very few foreigners (especially no Americans), so it was a nice change of pace to be in a place specifically catering to tourists, with our needs in mind. Getting up every morning and walking five minutes to the beach, with a readily available padded lounger and shade umbrella for rent ($3 USD a day with large beach towel & bottled water included), wasn’t a tough sell.

The incredibly beautiful beach, glorious sunshine, fine white sand, and great waves are a winning combination in my book. Nha Trang has the kind of waves that come in so close together that the entire coast looks like it’s covered in white, fluffy bubbles that contrast with the bright turquoise water that’s accented with navy and all shades of blue.

The Russkies

I have yet to mention one other aspect of the Nha Trang experience.  Russians . And a few Chinese thrown in too, but mostly lots and lots of Russians .

The Allure of Nha Trang

We’d been warned about the huge number of Russians in Nha Trang by both fellow travelers and posts on travel forums.  For some unknown reason, the Russians have taken a very strong liking to Nha Trang, Vietnam, and they can’t get enough of it.  They are in Nha Trang in droves – and, in all of Vietnam, only Nha Trang. I don’t think I’ve ever met a Russian, but now I’ve spent every day for seven days surrounded by hundreds of them.

Big & Beefy

I hate to admit this, but my stereotype of a Russian is mostly from James Bond movies (and the like). Big, tall, muscular men, with commanding, deep voices, quite imposing, and often with a shaved head. And the women aren’t too dissimilar, except they have hair.

Well, after spending a full week with the Russians, I have to say that my stereotype wasn’t too far off.  I would guess that close to half the men, and a good chunk of the women, met my expectations.

Many of the Russian men are huge. It’s especially noticeable because we have been surrounded by Vietnamese that we tower over and outweigh (by lots, I”m sorry to say) for months. So, suddenly being surrounded by hulking guys and their hulking families is quite a stark contrast.

nha trang russian tourist

One thing I have to say, the Russian women are very comfortable with their bodies, and kudos to them! Regardless of size, age, or body shape, Russian women wear a bikini. Young, teen-aged, middle-aged, old, and very old are all in bikinis.  Skinny, chunky, pear-shaped, large busted, extremely large busted – any and all were in bikinis. I’m talking the kind of bikini that shows most of the behind, if you know what I mean. Not much is left to the imagination. In my opinion, this isn’t the most flattering look for all body types, but on the beach at Nha Trang, no one seems to give a hoot.  And more power to them.

We’re Surrounded

There we sat, in our two beach loungers, among the hundreds of loungers filled with Russians. It was kind of surreal. We were a lone island of democracy (or a republic, if you want to be precise), in a giant Russian community of beachgoers. We were definitely the odd-men out, so to speak.

Even more Russians, that live and work in Nha Trang, roamed the loungers, advertising their restaurant or massage services, handing out discount coupons or sample menus. I’m not sure how, but most vendors could tell we weren’t Russian, so bypassed us, but the occasional vendor would approach us, chatting away in Russian. They wouldn’t stay long.  I think the blank stare and puzzled look on our faces were enough, and they would abruptly stop and quickly move on.

World Peace

nha trang russian tourist

I found it quite interesting being the only Americans (probably) in a sea of Russians. I really wanted to ask a Russian what they thought of us Americans.  We are taught to distrust and be suspicious of Russians. I was so curious what we would have in common, which I’m sure is a lot.

I never did get up the nerve to reach out. I’m fairly certain that very few of the Russians spoke English, so it would have been a short conversation.  And the only Russian word I learned all week, from hearing it a hundred times, was Nyet (means No or Not), which probably wouldn’t get us too far.

Like Bartells

nha trang russian tourist

Not only was the beach full of Russians, but the whole section of town along the beachfront was like a Russian enclave. Advertisements along the street were in Russian. Menus in restaurants were in Russian (and often English too, thankfully).  There was an unusually high number of stores that carried toiletries, like lotions, vitamins, soap, and shampoo, around town, with Russian advertising all over the front windows. These toiletry stores were unusually large and modern (most shops in Vietnam are small, mom & pop stores), so they really stuck out.

Morning, noon, and night, the toiletry stores were packed with Russian shoppers. We went into one to buy some sunscreen, and the prices were normal (sunscreen is expensive in Vietnam too).   It was really strange, but obviously the Russians either use an extraordinary amount of toiletry products, or they are in short supply back home. I don’t know, but after our one experience trying to navigate in the crowded store we tried to steer clear of all the Russian-packed toiletry stores of Nha Trang.

Vacation In a Vacation

Being in Nha Trang was like a vacation from the Vietnamese-portion of our vacation. Of course, there were Vietnamese around, as well as Chinese, some French, and others, I’m sure.  And there was still bat-s*&t crazy traffic, Banh Mi vendors everywhere (Vietnamese sandwich on a french baguette), and super cheap prices for almost everything.

We ate at an exceptional Indian restaurant several times, always surrounded (of course) by Russian families or couples. It was probably the best Indian food I’ve ever had.  All in all, our week in Nha Trang was kind of like a Russian holiday, with an Indian cuisine twist and a darn nice beach. Yes, I think Nha Trang was the perfect choice for us.  Now we’re refreshed and ready for more of the traditional Vietnam we know and love.

Wins and Losses

The cashews.  Fresh cashews for sale everywhere. Best cashews ever.

Seeing the first signs of the Tet (Vietnamese New Year). The Vietnamese decorate with flowers. What a lovely tradition. And each city or region has it’s own flower. For Nha Trang, it is yellow mums. Yellow mums were being sold on every street corner and were already prominently displayed at the entry of many hotels and businesses.

Seeing real Russians doing usual and normal things just like everyone else.  Wow, mind blown.

Happening upon a dragon competition along the beachfront. Amazing display of talented athletes performing incredible stunts and “dancing” as dragons.

Realizing body shaming is not a thing in Russia. Loved seeing women proud of who they are, no matter their size, shape, or age.

Fresh fruit vendors on the beach – quite a treat.  A whole pineapple cut-up on the spot. Dripping, sweet, and all ours.

Why didn’t we buy any cashews until our very last day in Nha Trang?  What, are we crazy? We walked by the enormous bags of bulk cashews for sale all week.  Silly, silly foreigners.

Not taking the unique opportunity to start a conversation with a Russian. I think I was a bit nervous that we’d get into politics, and then who knows what would have happened (I was outnumbered, after all). I suppose if things got tense, I could have fallen back on how good Putin looks shirtless ( Nyet!!! ).

Hi T & S,

Do you know if the average Vietnamese house has electricity in a city like Nha Trang, or in a smaller town? How about hygiene and health? Any need for medications there, if so, how and where?

I hope you got consent for that aggressive beach picture up there lol.

Aggressive? Consent? You are funny.

Loved this post Tracy. I’m reliving my times in Vietnam through you. We went to Nha Trang about 25 years ago and soaked up the party scene! There was no sign of Russians then. Glad to hear it was a good experience. I’m looking forward to talking with you about your travels. It’s so wonderful that you and Steve are doing this.

So glad you are enjoying!! Looking forward to travel chatting with you too – hopefully sooner rather than later.

We are in exactly same situation but sweds! They found this beach, on this island in southern Thailand, came and have never left! Same with swimwear situation!

Nha Trang, the place to see Russian tourists

street corner with Russian signs

Jake and I stayed in the coastal resort town of Nha Trang for three nights. The touristy area of town starts at the beach and extends inland for a couple of blocks. Because Nha Trang is incredibly popular with Russian tourists, many of the businesses in this area have signs and advertisements in Cyrillic. I maintain that a good way to find tasty local food is to look for Vietnamese on the menu. However, in Nha Trang, most of the restaurants had menus in English and Russian. I had difficulties knowing what exactly I was ordering, as there isn’t a one-to-one mapping between Vietnamese food names and English translations.

After spending a few days in Hội An, we took a train from Đà Nẵng to Nha Trang. The train arrived in the evening and it took time to get someone to uncrate our bike, go find gas (the gas tanks on all bikes are drained prior to shipping), return to the station to find the missing headlight switch, and locate the hotel. And then we had to find a late dinner (all the nearby restaurants were closed, so we found a corner döner kebab stand) and pickup water and snacks from a convenience store. By the time we fell into bed, it was around 1am and we were drained. And then in the morning, we were woken at 7:30am by repeated pounding on our door. When I enquired at the front desk later, I was told that someone wanted to know if we needed the room cleaned. Needless to say, the rude awakening (and subsequent next-door construction noises) put us in a crabby mood for the rest of the morning. Coffee and a late breakfast helped fix that.

street signs in Russian

We spent some time exploring the Cham ruins of Po Nagar. Unlike the ruins at Mỹ Sơn, Po Nagar sits on a hill in the middle of the Nha Trang suburbs. From the top of the hill, we were able to look out on houses and a harbor, and could juxtapose the new developments with the centuries-old brick buildings.

bridge to Po Nagar

After visiting Po Nagar, Jake and I took a short drive down the coast. We drove past many construction sites and through several village markets, and ogled at the cable car ferrying people to the resort island Vĩnh Nguyên. After returning to Nha Trang, we headed to the beach. We parked the motorbike, then wandered past a bar built on the sand. A friendly guy waved us down and explained that the drinks there were much cheaper than the drinks at a hotel up the road, so we decided to give them a try. While sitting at the bar, we chatted with Binh, a diving instructor for one of the local dive shops. Jake and I explained that we’d be leaving town the following day and therefore didn’t have time to take scuba lessons. After that, he was happy to chat with us about Vietnamese food, Nha Trang tourism, and foreign relations between Vietnam and Japan.

2 men in a coracle

One night, Jake and I ate dinner at a delicious restaurant called Lanterns. As befits the name, the interior of the restaurant was decorated with fabric-covered lanterns from Hội An. This is the only restaurant we’ve encountered in Vietnam with a waitlist. We got to watch two groups, one of Vietnamese tourists, the other of Russian tourists, jockeying for seats. After a party of six left, the two groups nabbed the adjacent tables for themselves. The restaurant staff then kicked them out since neither party had put their names on the waitlist.

The food at Lanterns was well worth the half-hour wait. We feasted on stuffed squid and pork claypot. And we loved the food so much that we returned the next day for brunch before riding to Đà Lạt.

We visited a back-alley bar after dinner that night. Based on online reviews, we expected to see a number of expats there. However, when we arrived, the entire bar was overrun with hashers (Hash House Harriers). Most of them were British guys in their 60’s and 70’s, and they were wearing shirts and jerseys from hash events all over the world.

Nha Trang offers ideal destination for Russian tourists - Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism

Together with Da Nang and Phan Thiet, Nha Trang is considered an attractive destination that foreign tourists cannot ignore, especially for visitors from Russia.

nha trang russian tourist

In late October 2011, Russia's OrenAir Airlines began to offer direct flights between the city of Krasnoyarsk to Cam Ranh International Airport in Khanh Hoa, serving tourists from the Far East Region of Russia who toured the Vietnamese cities of Nha Trang and Phan Thiet during their winter vacation. Currently, OrenAir Airlines offers one round-trip flight to Cam Ranh International Airport everyday and in the future, it will expand this service to serve tourists from nine cities in the Far East Region of Russia such as Khabarovsk, Vladivostoks, Novosibirsk and Kemerovo. Pegas Turistik, a Russian travel company, currently arranges nine flights from the Far East Region of Russia to the Cam Ranh International Airport every week, 70 percent of whom stay in Nha Trang.

Truong Dang Tuyen, the director of the Khanh Hoa Culture, Sports and Tourism Department, said that in the first six months of 2012, the province received more than 1.12 million tourists, up 8.14 percent compared with the same period last year, including 266,000 foreign tourists, up 36 percent, with their stay in the locality totaling about 2.6 million days, up 18.67 percent. Total revenue from tourism reached an estimated VND1.24 trillion, up 15.6 percent. This year, Khanh Hoa expects to welcome about 2.35 million tourists, including 500,000 foreign tourists; and revenue of the provincial tourism sector is projected to reach VND2.5 trillion. Satisfactory results of the first six months have made Khanh Hoa's tourism sector confident of its ability to realize the targets set for the whole year. In the first half of 2012, the number of foreign tourists to the province increased and most of them were Russian tourists with a long stay. In the first six months of 2012, Khanh Hoa received about 35,000 Russian tourists, and in June alone, more than 2,500 Russian tourists came to Nha Trang. The Kemerovo Airport of Russia has launched a new flight route to Cam Ranh. Last year, Khanh Hoa was visited by more than 60,000 Russian tourists.

Russian tourist Sergei Udovichenko said that Vietnam remained an attractive destination for Russian tourists. The cost of tours to Vietnam and prices while in the country remain reasonable and security in Vietnam is ensured; Vietnam has lots of beautiful tourist sites; Russian tourists enjoy the sea in Nha Trang and highly appreciate the hotels and restaurants for their quality services. Exhibitions and tourism promotion activities in Russia have made Vietnam and Nha Trang known to a growing number of Russian tourists. Most Russian tourists like swimming in sea, sunbathing and enjoying seafood.

Survey results show that Russian tourists account for a considerable percentage of tourists staying in Nha Trang's hotels such as Michelia, Sunrise and Yasaka Saigon. At Yasaka Saigon for example, Russian tourists account for 40 percent. Natasha, a Russian person who works in the field of tourism, said that Russian tourists like the weather and the sea in Nha Trang as well as tourist sites in the city such as Nha Phu Lagoon, Hon Mun Island, Hon Nhi Island and the Cham Po Nagar Towers. Russian tourists highly appreciate security and service quality in Nha Trang and they are willing to introduce it to their friends and relatives. Russian tourists are generous and this is a favorable condition for Nha Trang to increase revenue from tourism.

Many tourist sites as well as hotels and restaurants in Nha Trang provide tourists with information in Russian about things such as tour-guides, services and menu. The demand of the Vietnamese tourism sector in general and that of Khanh Hoa Province for tour-guides who can speak Russian is increasing as Russia emerges as one of the top ten markets in terms of the number of tourists to Vietnam.

Vietnam – Ideal Destination For Russian Tourist

  • Updated: December 11, 2023 Tommy Ngo in Vietnam Travel News 0 comment.

According to the recent report from the Voice of Russia, Russia has jumped 14 stages to claim the 11 th position on the list of countries that have the highest number of tourists to Vietnam in first 6 months of 2012. In details, there are 87,000 Russian coming to Vietnam in the first 5 months of 2012.

Mui Ne Binh Thuan

According to the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, more than 130,550 Russian tourists arrived in the province last year, making up 36.7 percent of the total number of foreign visitors to the locality. Because the peak season of winter vacation for Russian tourists to “shelter from harsh winter” is from November onwards. At the same time, Cam Ranh airport has started to receive direct flights from Russia, the number of Russian visitors to Binh Thuan has sharply increased. Currently, Mui Ne -Binh Thuan has gradually become a “Russian village” with a lot of hotels, resorts, restaurants, spa centers, gymnastic centers jointly opened by Vietnamese and Russian investors.

Vietnam Tours 2020

Binh Thuan has many interesting things which attract Russian tourists. But the main reason is that it has nice scenery and wonderful atmosphere. It is real destination where has several high-grade resorts known as “the capital of resorts”, various delicious dishes from fresh seafood at reasonable prices. The climatic conditions here are favorable for water and extreme sports such as: windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, etc. Moreover, Mui Ne is only 200 km from Tan Son Nhat airport (Ho Chi Minh city) and Cam Ranh airport (Khanh Hoa province). It is very convenience to combine tourism between these province.

At recent time, Bamboo village resorts are staying at the highest position on the list of hotels and resorts which attracted 60% of our total customers. Especially they are Russian tourists. They often choose this destination for long staying from 7 – 10 days and more. Several visitors have come and returned to Bamboo Village resort & Spa for 8-9 times.

Nha Trang

Most of Russian usually arrive and spend long time in Mui Ne. Attracting tourists to Binh Thuan for the first time is difficult task. Because there are a lot of competitively attractive destination, such as Ho chi minh City , Vung Tau, Nha Trang, Da Lat , Phu Quoc …with each own advantages.

Now, Nha Trang is considered a wonderful destination which attracts a lot of travelers, especially Russian travelers.

As survey results, most of Russian tourists choose these hotels for real staying, such as Michelia, Sunrise Nha Trang resort, Yasaka hotel. In which, Yasaka Nha Trang attract about 40% tourists who come from Russia. A Russian tour operator said that Russian tourists like the weather and the sea in Nha Trang as well as tourist sites in the city such as Nha Phu Lagoon, Hon Mun Island, Hon Nhi Island and the Cham Po Nagar Towers. Russian tourists highly appreciate security and service quality in Nha Trang and they are willing to introduce it to their friends and relatives. Russian tourists are generous and this is a favorable condition for Nha Trang to increase revenue from tourism.

In the future, Vietnam will be an ideal destination not only for Russian travelers but also for all travelers in over the world.

nha trang russian tourist

Nha Trang , sometimes spelt Nhatrang , is Vietnam 's most famous seaside resort town, and the scuba diving centre of Vietnam. It's more lively and urban in character than other beach destinations such as Mui Ne and Phu Quoc .

Understand [ edit ]

Traces of human settlement in Nha Trang date back to the Cham Empire, though in times of Vietnamese rule, there wasn't much more here than small fishing villages. The French recognised that this beautiful bay, with its islands and white sand beaches, made for a perfect bathing spot, and began the transformation into a resort town. American soldiers agreed, and Nha Trang became a favourite R&R stop during the war.

After the end of Vietnam war, the Soviet military became increasingly more present in the Cam Ranh Bay, just south of Nha Trang. After retiring, many Russian military personnel settled down in Nha Trang and opened tourism businesses, leading to an increasing influx of Russian tourists to the city, who form nowadays the bulk of foreign tourists - in the main tourism area of Nha Trang, signs in Russian are even more common than in English. In the 21st century, Chinese tourists have become quite common as well, as in the rest of Southeast Asia .

However, Nha Trang is definitely not a Westernized resort town like Kuta in Bali - it is hugely popular among Vietnamese tourists, who go to the beach mainly on early morning and late afternoon, and spend the rest of the day enjoying other attractions including mud baths or Vinpearl Land - dubbed Vietnam's Disneyland , although it's probably more akin to Singapore 's Sentosa .

Climate [ edit ]

The monsoon season is from Oct to mid-Dec. Sea winds can be heavy, and sometimes the weather can get pretty chilly. Summer, naturally, brings many vacation goers into town and hotel rooms get somewhat more difficult to find.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

There are lots of domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City , Vinh , Da Nang , Hanoi , Haiphong , with prices starting at 250,000 dong.

International flights to KL Malaysia (Airasia), Bangkok (BangkokAir, AirAsia), Seoul , South Korea and to cities in China including Hong Kong (via HK Express).

Getting there and away :

  • By taxi – The fixed rate from the airport to downtown locations is 250,000 dong. If going by the meter, it will be about 100,000 dong more expensive.
  • By bus – The airport bus goes directly to the city center; 65,000 dong, 50-min ride. There are a few companies operating on this route, their buses such as the yellow Đất Mới airport buses (no.18) with 16 seats, can be found just outside opposite front entrance of the airport. They stop at certain major hotels — within the traditional tourist center the usual drop off point is hotel Liberty Central. 12.2495 109.19284 2 Đất Mới airport bus terminal is start and end point for this airport bus route number 18. Online maps have this location called Land Transport Corp New. This bus could be used also as an economical way to visit Bai Dai beach.
  • By shuttle bus – Some mid-range and upscale hotels organise airport transfers, often for free.

By train [ edit ]

  • 12.2483 109.1843 3 Railway Station . 1 km north from the city centre. ( updated Feb 2016 )

Nha Trang is a stop on the main railway line connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City . The journey to Nha Trang from Ho Chi Minh City takes 6-8 hr on SE trains (often delayed), so a sleeper is not really necessary. The scenery on this journey is not that great compared to further north, so you are not missing out too much by travelling overnight.

The distance from HCMC is quite expensive, so better have a stop in Mui Ne (going there by bus) on the way.

By bus [ edit ]

  • 12.258361 109.134877 4 Central Bus station ( Bến xe phía Nam Nha Trang ) ( 7 km west of the city center on the road Hai Mươi Ba Tháng Mười, next to the MM Mega Market. To get to the center, you can take a taxi or motocycle from here or catch the #2 city bus going East on Hai Mươi Ba Tháng Mười road. If you travelled with Phuong Trang (FUTA Bus Lines) you may catch a free shuttle bus which is operated by FUTA to your hotel and if not do not take a taxi parked beside the bus or inside the bus station (there is a gate at the front) and if in doubt ask 1) the FUTA ticket sellers inside the main hall or 2) several completely unrelated people. ). ( updated Aug 2017 )

Nearly all long distance sleeper buses stop in Nha Trang. They come from Ho Chi Minh City (10-12 hours, both morning and overnight buses available, both are sleeper buses), Hoi An (12 hours). Besides, there are hourly buses from Da Lat (3-4 hr, hourly between 07:00-15:00) and a couple ones from Qui Nhon (6 hr, 115,000 dong, at 07:30, 08:30, 13:00 and 15:30), Mui Ne (6 hr).

However, tourist ( open tour ) buses may drop off passengers near the tourist areas.

By car [ edit ]

Private car rental with a driver are usually modern air-con cars and can be rented for about 1,000,000 dong per day. Car rental prices (as mostly anything in Vietnam) usually increase during holiday seasons especially around Tet (Vietnamese New Year). Make sure to avoid high prices by booking it beforehand with the car rental services.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Orientation [ edit ]

Nha Trang has two main beaches: a larger one south of the Cai river, and a smaller one on the north. The southern beach, lined by the Trần Phú avenue, is by far the most popular among the visitors. Tourism infrastructure catering to foreign tourists, including diving schools, tour agencies, western-style bars and international restaurants and cafes, is mostly concentrated in the southern part of the beach, between Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai and the old airport. In the central part of the beach, lie the upmarket international chain hotels such as Sheraton, Novotel and InterContinental. The rest of the beachfront, as well as the northern beach, has infrastructure mostly aimed at Vietnamese tourists. A few blocks far from the beach, Nha Trang is a normal, bustling Vietnamese city.

By motorbike [ edit ]

In Nha Trang, as in the rest of Vietnam, motorbikes are the least safe but most convenient way of going around, especially to go to the beaches and sightseeing spots outside of the city. See the general advice: Vietnam by motorcycle .

Nha Trang's city bus system is surprisingly useful for travellers that have more time than money. And they can also be used to reach the more further away sights and interesting destination outside of Nha Trang.

Buses are white and blue in color, have air conditioning, Vietnamese music, and are very cheap, typically costing around 10,000 dong. While there is very few information available, online or otherwise, about city buses, there are not many bus routes such that it is relatively easy to understand them. Also, check OpenStreetMap (which is used by this travel guide and apps like OsmAnd, Mapy.cz, Organic Maps and Maps.Me) for bus stops around and in Nha Trang, which often have the bus number in their name and can give you a clue on where the bus route goes along.

In addition, buses are rarely crowded except on peak hours. On the negative side, buses are often infrequent and with limited working hours, drivers and fare collectors seldom speak English, and bus stops are often quite far from each other. Therefore, make sure that you have enough time and patience before going somewhere by bus.

Buses are always paid with cash. Fare collectors can provide you change, but avoid using large bills. As in other cities in Vietnam, buses often do not completely stop to allow people to board, and even when they stop, they will often start moving as soon as the first person climbs the stairs of the bus. Therefore, do not stop or try to pay the fare as soon as you board the bus; instead, find a place to sit or stay and the bus fare collector will walk towards you.

  • Bus #5 goes mostly along the coast, between Vinpearl cable car in the south and Hòn Xện in the north, good for reaching the Núi Cô Tiên mountain trail.
  • Bus #4 is probably the most useful for visitors, as it passes through the main tourist area (between Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai and the old airport) as well as many points of interest, including the Vinpearl cable car entrance, the Hòn Chồng promontory, the Po Nagar towers and Nha Trang Cathedral, as well as nearby the Cho Dam Market. Visitors staying in the main tourist area can take the bus at Nguyễn Thiện Thuật.
  • Bus #3 also passes through the main tourist area, and can be used to go to Doc Let beach. While this would take at least 90 minutes, it is one of the few ways to go to Doc Let for travellers which do not have their own transportation. If you find a bus stop for the #3 try asking the locals where the bus will stop, since the locations are sometimes merged and aren't where you thought they were.

On foot [ edit ]

Although not as treacherous as in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City , walking in Nha Trang is certainly no walk in the park. Zebra crossings are almost meaningless as no vehicle will ever stop for pedestrians crossing the street, and the few traffic lights in the city are systematically ignored. Pavements are often unusable for walking, as they are almost entirely occupied with parked motorcycles, kiosks and restaurant tables, such that pedestrians are expected to walk mostly in the road. See the general advice for crossing the road in Vietnam .

One of the few pleasant places to walk in Nha Trang is the walking path along the beach, which is quite well-maintained and lined with nice gardens, monuments and public places, although sometimes interrupted by motorcycle parking lots.

By taxi [ edit ]

The drivers of Mai Linh (preferably) or Vinasun taxis usually use the meter and do not attempt to cheat on tourists. A ride inside the city of Nha Trang should never cost more than a few dozen thousand dong. On the other hand, going to places outside of Nha Trang by taxi can cost hundreds of thousand dong, and possibly much more if you would like the driver to wait for you to bring you back to the city. See full list taxi Nha Trang

Grab now operates in Nha Trang for car and motorbike taxis via their smart phone app.

By cyclo [ edit ]

A wonderful option for seeing the sites is to hire a cyclo-driver for the day. This runs about US $15 plus tip. All the in-town highlights, the post office, and a choice of restaurants from 08:00-19:00. English skills may be basic. The driver will keep the touts away--a real bonus! It seems all cyclos are electric assist powered now with colourful LED lights at night. More expensive than using taxi cars for short trips.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Nha Trang is quite flat and bicycles can be rented for typically 30,000 to 50,000 dong for one day for a basic no-gears bike if you lucky to find somewhere. Locals on bicycles are more commonly seen at night when its cooler and no sun to burn their skin. However, if you have no experience with Vietnamese traffic, you should think twice about using a bicycle as your main means of transport in Nha Trang. Electric bikes (ebikes) are a common sight in Nha Trang.

These four brick towers were built by the Cham civilization between the 7th and 12th centuries to honour Yang Ino Po Ngar , mother of the kingdom, and the aroma of incense emanating from within makes it clear that this remains a religious site for the local Buddhists of Nha Trang today. The longevity of these last vestiges of a once-dominant SE Asian civilisation should impress temple enthusiasts even if the insensitive restoration and surrounding mass of tourists don't. The small complex sits on a hill which enjoys views across Nha Trang's fishing village. It is a 20- to 25-min walk (or short motorbike ride) from the main beach strip, however be prepared to wander through the real Nha Trang, quite an abrupt change from the showy built-up beach side resort. Public Bus 4 stops near the Cham Towers. 30,000 dong . ( updated Mar 2023 )

The pagoda was established in 1963 to honour the monks and nuns who died demonstrating against the Diem government. These students have no affiliation with the school and entry to the pagoda is free. Free . ( updated Feb 2016 )

  • 12.255598 109.095211 8 Diên Khánh Citadel , Diên Khánh Townlet ( 12 km W of city ). Citadel was built by French officer Olivier de Puymanel for Nguyễn Ánh in 1793. It housed royal palace, private houses, warehouses and jail. It was fenced by walls of 3.5 m height, surrounded by moats of 4-5 m deep and 10 m wide. It was built with 6 gates, but only 4 of them remain. ( updated Feb 2016 )
  • 12.167 109.054 9 Fairy Spring waterfalls ( Suối Tiên ) ( about 20 km SW of Nha Trang. Go 10 km W of Nha Trang to Diên Khánh, go 5 km through the old Diên Khánh citadel to Diên Phước village, turn left 4 km to Suoi Tien village, then right 1 km to the stream ). Fairy Spring is a small, cool stream and swimming hole much visited by local kids on weekends. The swimming hole is at the end of a short jungle walk. It is a pleasant place to visit in summer. In winter the water is too cold to swim. The stream's source is the area of Hồn Bà, the highest peak in the province. Bottled and canned drinks are available, but no food is sold here yet. The area is slowly being developed and will eventually become a resort with a hotel, bungalows, and restaurant. 10,000 dong per person, 3,000 dong per motorbike .
  • 12.382483 109.1329 10 Ba Ho Waterfalls ( near Ba Ho village, approximately 20 km N of Nha Trang ). A series of three waterfalls and a fast flowing river tucked away in the forest. There are limited amenities, although you can buy food like rice, chicken, beers and soft drinks. Taxis are available in Nha Trang to take you there, but its not too difficult to find yourself and with good weather it's a pleasant drive, if you are confident on a motorbike. Its a good one hour trip from Nha Trang by motorbike through some rough, off-road tracks (especially in the wet season). The turn off from the main highway north of Nha Trang can be easy to miss (a stone pillar), but most locals along the road should be able to point it out. From the turn off it's a straight track to the river. You may want to bring some sturdy shoes to climb across the rocks and swimming gear for a dip when you get there. It will take about 45 minutes from the entrance of the tourist area to the lakes. There is an orphanage very close to the lakes (take a right turn when you get to a T-junction in the rice fields) that would really benefit from any gifts of vegetarian food (take milk, tofu, yogourt, etc.). Call Dieu An, the nun at +84 90 5823807. She speaks only Vietnamese. Entrance fee 20 000 dong . ( updated Feb 2016 )

  • Boat cruises – The going rate for a one-day multi-island tour is US $6 per person, with snorkelling, fishing, and many other activities among the possibilities. Tours may provide lunch with drinks on board. Booking agents abound, so compare itineraries to find the best for you.
  • Swimming pools . People come here to swim in the sea, but there are also a number of swimming pools. Louisiane Brewhouse has a good one that is free to use. Hiring a soft chaise longue costs 40,000 dong. The Yasaka Saigon Nha Trang Hotel coffee shop in Yersin St has a small shady pool for free use. A number of mid-range hotels also have pools, some of which can be used by non-guests. Sea and Sun Hotel has a nice rooftop pool and costs 70,000 dong for non-guests. There is another large public pool at Yersin st, opposite the hospital, for 30,000 dong. Another option is Central Park on Tran Phu, near Louisiane Brewhouse. Buy a deckchair for 60,000 or 120,000 and swim for free. Has a small diving board for kids, a lazy river, and a pool bar.

Beaches [ edit ]

  • 12.2472 109.1968 3 Nha Trang Beach . The city's main beach, south of the Cai river, is about 6 km long and lined with a beautiful, well-maintained promenade containing walking paths, gardens, monuments and leisure spaces. The beach itself has a broad strip of sand, and the calm waters are extremely inviting for swimming - but care is needed, as the waters get deep very quickly. While Nha Trang's beach is hardly one of the most beautiful beaches of Southeast Asia , it can still provide one of the best urban beach experiences in the region. You will see many female vendors walking along the beach selling fruit and hot, steamed seafood. Vietnamese typically come to the beach during sunrise and sunset, with the Russians occupying the beach en masse during the peak sunshine hours. Make sure that you visit in the right season. The beach can be disappointing when the weather is grey and the waves choppy. The experience is then one of murky sandy waters, a strip of standard brown sand with a multitude of empty beach chairs and no one to be seen.
  • 12.2751 109.2024 4 Bai Duong Beach ( 1.5 km N on Tran Phu St over the main bridge ). North of the Cai river, Bai Duong beach is smaller than in the main tourist area. It is a beautiful beach, but the sewage channels make it somewhat less appealing. The beach is mostly popular among Vietnamese visitors, and hence quite empty during peak sunshine hours. Near the beach there are several seafood restaurants catering to Vietnamese tourists. It can be reached using bus #4.
  • 12.2729 109.2065 5 Hon Chong ( 1.5 km N on Tran Phu St over the main bridge ). Scenic rock formations in the sea. The disposition of the rocks, as well as the sculpture of a giant fist mark in one of them, is mysterious and a source of several folk tales. You can climb the rocks and get some nice views of Bai Doung Beach and the nearby islands. It can be reached using bus #4. Entrance 22,000 dong, including dance performance . ( updated Feb 2016 )
  • 12.2111 109.2809 6 Hòn Tre island . Has several nice beaches, but almost of all them are of exclusive access to guests of the Vinpearl resorts. The exception is the small beach in front of the Vinpearl Land's waterpark, which is accessible for those who bought a ticket to Vinpearl Land. The beach offers waterports and contains a Russian restaurant. ( updated May 2019 )
  • 12.5571 109.2302 7 Doc Let Beach ( around 50 km N of Nha Trang ). Located in the Ninh Hòa district north of Nha Trang, Doc Let is a beautiful, long beach with shallow, crystal-clear waters. The water has weak waves, but it is still excellent for swimming. Local fisher families sell and prepare seafood they will cook for you on the beach for a very reasonable price. The southern part of the beach contains the Ninh Hòa fishing village, where the north of the beach contains some relatively inexpensive resorts or it still underdeveloped. The best parts of the beach are the ones in front of the resorts, with the rest unfortunately with a lot of rubbish thrown by locals. You can pay a fee to rent a chair and use the showers/restrooms of White Sand Doclet resort or Paradise resort. Doc Let beach can be reached from Nha Trang using bus #3, by motorbike, and by some day tous generally aimed at Russian visitors. If you are staying in a resort there, the resort may offer you transfer services for a surcharge.
  • 12.109874 109.192185 8 Long Beach ( Bai Dai beach ) ( on the road to Cam Ranh airport ). It's in the Cam Lâm and Cam Ranh districts, 20 km south of Nha Trang. Bai Dai is in the middle of a frenetic process of development, with upscale resorts being built nonstop in the beachfront. Even so, the beach is very long and it is still possible to find yourself alone if you walk enough. It has beautiful blue waters, soft sand and it is pleasant to walk upon as it is less steep than the beach in Nha Trang, but rubbish can also be a problem in areas which are not in the front of resorts. Seafood is served at many shacks with deckchairs right on the beach. Probably best to go by motorcycle. The airport bus number 18 might be another option. Get off by road entrance leading to The Shack Vietnam.
  • There are several other beaches in the vicinity of Nha Trang. About 30 km north of Nha Trang, just when past the village of Ninh Hoa, a peninsula juts out into the South China Sea, and on its northern coast is its tinier brother, Hon Khoi. Several resorts are on the eastern beach of Hon Khoi, where you find palm trees, white sand, and turquoise waters. To get there, follow the highway north past the turnoff to Dac Lac Province / Buon Ma Thuot . Then look out for a sign reading "Doc Let-Resort", close to a filling station. A taxi will take 2 people for about 200,000 dong, while a xe om should not be more expensive than 100,000 dong. Or catch a through bus travelling Hwy 1 and get off at the turn off. There will always be some motorbike drivers waiting to take you. Whatever place you choose to go, be sure to reserve a bungalow in advance.

Diving & snorkeling [ edit ]

Close off-shore from Nha Trang sit a series of islands that offer decent diving and snorkelling, easily accessible by day trip. The city has about two dozen dive shops, making for fierce competition and great value. PADI open water courses with equipment rental are available for US $250 . A two-dive boat trip with equipment rental and modest lunch can be had for US $45 .

Coastal and undersea construction has stirred up a lot of sediment in the area, so underwater visibility is sometimes not great. The area is heavily fished, so fish life is also limited. You wouldn't cross the world just to dive at Nha Trang. But if you always dreamed of getting a scuba certification, Nha Trang is a good place to do it. The shops generally offer good quality equipment and experienced, certified dive masters. Diving goes on year round, but in the Oct-Dec windy season, the boat ride can be a bit rough and diving is limited to a few sites in the lee of the islands.

Organisation of the Nha Trang dive industry is sometimes complex. If you sign up for a trip with shop A, you might find yourself joined with a group and divemaster from shop B, which shares a boat with another group and divemaster from shop C, the boat itself being independently owned. Consolidation is especially active in the off-season, when few if any shops can fill a boat on their own. It's a good illustration of Vietnamese culture, which does not stand on ceremony, and loves a bargain, and is very skilled at making maximum use of resources. The local divemasters are mostly great, friendly guys with lots of stories to tell.

Resorts outside of town [ edit ]

About 60km north of Nha Trang is a stretch of coastline about 20 km long that contains some of the best beaches in Vietnam. Soft power like white sand beaches with clear blue sea and gentle gradients, these beaches are more beautiful and easier for swimming than in Nha Trang. This is an ideal area to explore by motorbike, perhaps taking a night or two side trip from Nha Trang city. The turn off for Jungle Beach gets you off the busy highway for a more relaxing 20 km stretch of road to Jungle Beach Resort. Just after this turn off for Jungle Beach is the turn off for Doc Let Beach, which is another 13 km away and a similarly more relaxing and scenic road. There is an interconnecting road between Jungle and Doc Let so no need to go all the way back to the highway to get from one to the other.

It is very easy to sleep a week away there in a hammock kissed by sea breezes. There is usually various travellers there to socialise with at meals and in the evenings. You can rent a motorbike in Nha Trang for the easy ride up to Doc Let. Any buses can also drop you on the main road for a 10 minute walk to Paradise. Vladimir will also drop you in Nha Trang on the back of his scooter if he's going into town. Stay safe [ edit ]

The risk of petty crime in Nha Trang, especially late at night, is high compared to most other places in Asia. The most common crime is pick pocketing after midnight near the Sailing Club. During the day, it is relatively safe though bag snatching on the beach is not uncommon, so don't take any valuables to the beach. Staying cautious at all times is best. Do not wear too much jewellery, and keep an eye on your belongings. It would be smart to travel in groups when you are out roaming the streets at night. Also, people coming home from the clubs should take a taxi and not a motorbike taxi. Single males walking back to their hotels in the early hours from clubs and bars such as the Sailing Club and Why Not Bar, especially if a little drunk, should beware of ladies approaching, typically in twos or threes, but often with a couple of guys on motorbikes watching closely from a distance ready to be get-away drivers or to get involved if things get nasty. They come over all friendly and touchy-feely, first checking to see what valuables you have and where, then relieve you of them. Often the victim doesn't even know he's been robbed until he gets back to his room or after he wakes up. This is almost becoming a tourist attraction in the sense you can watch this spectacle almost nightly, perhaps helping out a fellow drunken tourist being robbed. Unbelievably, no police are seen, and no hotel or bar security gets involved.

Do not keep money in your passport. If you want your hotel to lock up your money, they will usually be happy to do so in their hotel safe and have procedures for doing that. Passports are kept separate from other valuables as they need access to these for reporting each day your stay to the government. Better than giving the passport to the hotel is handing over a photocopy (personal data page and visa). It is never a good idea to give your passport to anyone other than officials. Never store money in your passport. Keep some money in a different pocket to your wallet/money belt. No point in displaying it when paying for small purchases.

Drive-by motorcycle theft is fairly common in Nha Trang. Banknotes and wallets have been snatched from tourists' hands.

If hiring a motorbike, check what coverage your insurance company gives for riding motorbikes in Asia, and it is frequently none.

Do not argue with locals who try to hustle money from you. This includes tourist touts, moto taxis, etc. They can become violent and aggressive easily, often resorting to the use of rocks or even concealed weapons. Although they can be a bit harder to get rid of than in other places, it is best to avoid these people altogether.

There was one negative report about TM Brothers buses. It's claimed, that they have a bad reputation, and some of the seats are broken and you can find cockroaches on the bus. However, their buses are usually a few dollars cheaper than other companies.

Connect [ edit ]

Internet access can be found in many hotels. There are not that many Internet cafes around now as most hotels typically have computers available for free use by guests or Wi-Fi.

When using the telephone at a hotel be sure to check their rates. Skype or Google Hangouts is free or low cost.

Mobile SIM cards are readily available, mobifone seems the best option for tourists. Their SIM cards cost 50,000 dong or a little more depending where you buy it and come with about 100,000 dong credit for use in the first month. They also provide 3G Internet data packages, e.g., 1.5 Gb for one month costs 120,000 dong. Cellular Data info: APN: m-wap Username: mms Password: mms

Nha Trang eyes tourists from Russia, Kazakhstan

Bui Quoc Dai, deputy director of tour operator Anex Vietnam, said his company will cooperate with Vietjet Air to organize charter flights to bring tourists from Kazakhstan, Russia and some countries in Eastern Europe to Nha Trang of Khanh Hoa Province from Oct. 25.

There would be two weekly charter flights departing from Almaty International Airport in Kazakhstan to Cam Ranh International Airport, around 40 kilometers from Nha Trang beach resort town.

"Many Russian tourists wishing to visit Vietnam on their winter holiday escape would transit in Kazakhstan and board these charter flights to Nha Trang as direct flights from Russia to Vietnam have not yet resumed," Dai said.

"However, due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine military conflict, the number of Russian visitors to Nha Trang would be quite low," he added.

Each flight will carry 180-200 tourists who would stay at three-to-five-star resorts in Nha Trang from one week to 28 days.

Amid the shortage of Russian tourists due to political tensions, the travel firm will focus on exploiting this new travel market, Dai said.

There are numerous similarities between the Russian and Kazakhstan markets as tourists from the latter take long-term vacations during the winter season, which starts in October.

Nguyen Thi Le Thanh, director of Khanh Hoa's Department of Tourism, said the opening of these charter flights to Nha Trang will help diversify the international tourism sector in the absence of Chinese and Russian visitors , its biggest sources before the pandemic.

In the first nine months of this year, Nha Trang welcomed 6,700 Russian tourists, accounting for 4.3% of total foreign arrivals.

Vietnam is one of the five most popular travel destinations for Russians for the New Year holiday, according to data from Russian travel site OneTwoTrip based on customer bookings with departures between Dec. 31 and Jan. 8, 2023.

After the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in February, direct flights from Russia to Vietnam were suspended.

Currently, Russian tourists only come to Vietnam in small groups. They have to transit in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan before taking a flight to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
