Some 300 musicians, from Diplo to Nile Rodgers, lobby Congress for ticketing reform
What do Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Diplo have in common?
As of Thursday, they are among the more than 280 popular musicians who have signed a letter urging lawmakers to help reform the concert ticketing system.
Other prominent signatories include Becky G, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, Finneas, Graham Nash, Green Day, Nile Rodgers, ODESZA, Chappell Roan, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Jason Mraz, Sia, Sylvan Esso and Lorde.
"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter reads.
It goes on to say that the use of illegal bots, speculative ticket listings and deceitful advertising causes "real harm," including severing the relationship between artists and fans — "which forms the backbone of the entire music industry" — and allowing resellers to profit more than the artists themselves.
The artists are asking the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to help fix those problems by supporting the Fans First Act , which was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators last December. It was referred to and remains before the committee, which would need to approve it to bring it to a floor vote.
"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers' deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter continues. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-M.N., who along with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a statement Thursday that she will "keep working to pass this legislation."
"Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," Klobuchar said. "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists. That's why our bipartisan legislation to improve the ticketing experience has growing support, including hundreds of major musicians."
The Fans First Act focuses on three priorities : ticket sales transparency, consumer protection and stopping bad actors.
It would require live event ticket sellers and resellers to disclose more information about ticket costs and seat location, refund customers the full ticket price when events are canceled and create a reporting website for fans to file complaints.
"Even better, it backs all these regulations up with clear penalties and enforcement," the letter says.
The letter was organized by Fix the Tix , a coalition of over two dozen live event industry organizations led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).
Since its formation in the fall of 2023, it has called on Congress to enact legislation that would protect fans from price gouging, ban fake tickets and ticket-buying bots, end fraudulent resale practices and ensure price transparency, among other reforms.
So how did this letter come together, and why now?
NIVA Executive Director Stephen Parker told NPR over email that industry groups representing artists — such as the Recording Academy and Music Managers Forum - U.S. — are a "critical part" of Fix the Tix's efforts.
"Artists engaged in those organizations heard about our efforts and volunteered to lend their voice to getting comprehensive ticketing reform passed," he said. "The letter is being sent now because time is running out in this Congress for the Senate and House to meaningfully address the predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers that plague fans and artists."
Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have come under increased scrutiny from artists and fans in recent years who accuse the companies of maintaining a monopoly over the industry ever since their controversial 2010 merger. Live Nation has repeatedly denied the allegations.
In particular, Ticketmaster's chaotic sale of Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets in November 2022 left scores of fans empty-handed and outraged. Several state attorneys general launched investigations, a group of Swifties sued the companies for fraud and the Senate grilled Live Nation executives at a January 2023 hearing.
Lawmakers have since introduced several aptly-named bills to reform various aspects of the industry, like the TICKET Act and the BOSS and SWIFT Act .
For its part, Live Nation expressed support for the Fans First Act when it was first introduced in the Senate in December.
"We believe it's critical Congress acts to protect fans and artists from predatory resale practices, and have long supported a federal all-in pricing mandate, banning speculative ticketing and deceptive websites, as well as other measures," it said in a statement shared with NPR.
The Justice Department is said to be ramping up its antitrust probe into Live Nation, with unnamed sources telling the Wall Street Journal and Axios in recent weeks that the agency could file a lawsuit as soon as May.

“Le Freak, C’est Chic”- lyrics known all around the world and definitive of the effervescent disco era and just one prime example of the influential repertoire that the legendary composer, producer and musician Nile Rodgers (born 19 September 1952) from New York, US, who has built an extraordinary legacy.
Born into a family of musicians, it’s only natural that Rodgers inherent love for music began to develop. At age 15 he picked up the guitar and in no time at all he started backing R&B icons such as Aretha Franklin, Ben E King and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins at the famous Harlem Apollo Theatre, US.
Fast forward to 1976, the prime era of disco and the year that Rodgers alongside Bernard Edwards founded one of the most instrumental disco groups of all time, Chic. Providing hits such as “Everybody Dance”, “Good Times” and of course the iconic classic “Le Freak”, becoming the biggest selling single in Atlantic Records history. In 2014, in conjunction with o2 and Go Think Big, Rodgers reworked the popular track inviting aspiring young music enthusiasts in the UK to get involved with the project providing amazing work experience opportunities. The following year “Le Freak” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Rodgers’ signature Stratocaster alone is worth an estimated £1.3 billion which he used on a number of smash hits for an array of music legends including: Sister Sledge, Debbie Harry, Mick Jagger, Madonna and Michael Jackson- just a few of the artists who feature in his production credits clocking in at over 200 tracks and albums.
With three Grammy Awards under his belt, over 200 million albums sold and his credentials extending over all aspects of the entertainment industry, it’s no wonder Rodgers in held in such revere as he continues to impact the music world collaborating with old school legends as well as contemporary artists such as: Daft Punk, Sam Smith, Pharrell Williams and Avicii. Rodgers’ influence is unstoppable and with an everlasting legacy it will continue impact generations to come.
Live reviews
From the moment Nile Rodgers starts tweeting about wherever he's landed, you know that he has a passion in everything he does.
"GoodTimes" has always been part of my rules about life. Not because of him - to be honest it had never clicked the connection between that saying and the song he had written.
I've never realised how much of a fan I was until 2014. Having loved Chic & Sister Sledge for a many a year I knew of his existence, but had never dug deeper.
And then I saw a 2 minute video biography of him. It's on his website - that's when you not only realise the number of artists and songs he's been involved with, but also the devotion he has to music overall.
I flew to Belfast to see him on a whim, based on the above. I then went to see him again a few weeks later in London because of it - overnight he'd become my new favourite live artist ever.
It is a polished show - the band and CHIC singers are pro's. But however long they might have been doing it, they seem as if each night is the first night.
Electrifying - at O2 Indigo I have never been in an audience where from the moment it started to the very end everyone (yes everyone) was dancing.
The set is all about his music - not just CHIC. When they played Let's Dance (David Bowie) it just went mad. Unbelievable - this was a song of the eighties that probably many in the audience didn't realise he'd been part of.
I am proud to say that from now on, I will travel anywhere in Europe to see him at least once a year. Everyone needs a Nile Rodgers fix - the ultimate feel good master.
"Aim for GoodTimes, avoid BadTimes and always add ChakaKhan (random things)" are my rules - at least I now know where one part of that came into my head years ago.

A Nile Rodgers live set is an exercise in the legendary guitarist attempting to prove to you that he wrote at least two thirds of your favourite songs ever, even if you weren’t fully aware of the fact yet. From the acknowledged classics of his most famed vehicle Chic through to masterpieces by David Bowie, Diana Ross, Sister Sledge and even Daft Punk, there’s simply no faulting a Rodgers setlist. Yet this isn’t an exercise in watching someone past their peak go over old glories either – forever backed by a band every inch his musical (if not songwriting) equals, the musicianship on display is nothing short of impeccable, the band being tighter than could ever be medically recommended. Yet it’s likely you’ll struggle to focus on any such technicalities, what with all the dancing you’ll be doing (a fair proportion of Rodgers’ hits contain the word ‘Dance’ in the title, and dance you most certainly shall). Currently in the middle of one of the most warmly received career rebirths of recent years, these are shows are a master class in disco, pop and funk to tell the grandkids you’ve seen. Given the timeless nature of the material, chances are they’ll grow up to be huge fans too.
Nile Rodgers, the legend of disco himself has worked with so many huge international stars it could make your head spin and he is able to incorporate all of these hits that he co-wrote into his own live show. Often performing with his band CHIC, when he steps out solo he has an equally talented band to help perform dance classics such as 'Everybody Dance' and 'I Want Your Love'.
He shows his talents with the guitar during the retro introduction to 'I'm Coming Out' by Diana Ross as his guest vocalists really shine for this medley including 'Upside Down'. Another frequent collaborator is paid homage to, this time the ever popular Sister Sledge with a trio of hits performed in all of their disco glory that really gets the audience dancing below.
The atmosphere is one of complete party and Rodgers is ready to bring it home with 'Le Freak' and 'My Forbidden Lover' which evoke mass singalong and utter euphoria as the audience dance below the falling confetti having experience a wonderful slice of the 70s and 80s.
This was a most memorable concert ... . Chaka Khan, a 1970's & 1980's icon, appeared and performed with all the blazing glory of yesteryear! Furthermore, even being in her mid-sixties, the Rock-Funk songstress has lost none of sex appeal! Nile Rodgers & CHIC performed after the "Queen of Funk" and took the audience through a time warp, back to the 70's with their memorable hits "Dance, Dance, Dance", "Everybody Dance", "I Want Your Love", "My Forbidden Lover", and "Le Freak"! Nile Rodgers also deservedly gave himself a few "pats on the back" by performing a medley of hits which he wrote for the late & great David Bowie, Sister Sledge, Madonna, and for a contemporary favorite, Pharrell Williams, "To Get Lucky"!Finally, the honorary "Dr." Nile Rodgers, UCAL Berkeley School of Music, closed the warm & pleasant night at WOLF TRAP with VIP audience dance participation in CHIC's "Good Times"!
"Continue to stay in good health", BOTH OF YOU, and "THANK YOU" for making Us feel young again!!! LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!
Legend- an incredible experience to witness such an incredible master with excellent accompanying musicians as well as the two lovely female singers. Not sure I can do the concert justice with words, but it's quite possibly an experience which will never quite be repeated, due to the fact that it coincided with the release of the new single, and the fact that such a talent played such a small intimate venue. I don't think he's doing it for the money.
Unusually, it actually started with a showing of the new video on stage for that single, and what followed was two hours of non stop acoustic heaven. If you get a chance to get to see them at such a venue in the future, try to get a ticket.
Man, this cat can do it all and this show was so fantastic. I grew up in Minneapolis and listened to a small ten watt radio station that played soul and funk and he wrote half the stuff they played. The girlfriend wanted to see Cher, her sister backed out, I went instead and was BLOWN away that Nile was performing. And performed he did, I loved every minute of every song. Thanks sister who backed out.
Wow! What an amazing gig from the genuine legend that is Nile Rodgers and CHIC - supported by Sigala as well at a great venue at Franklin's Gardens, Northampton. Really, one of the best gigs I have ever been to! Rather than write a review, hopefully my videos give a good flavour of the gig:

Absolutely phenomenal from start to finish. The support acts, notably Franc Moody and MistaJam, were also really good, would go and see them properly another time! Played all of the classics and I have no complaints, flawless start to finish, these guys know how to put on a show. Didn't stop dancing all night!
I am an avid concert goer and seeing Nile Rodgers has been on my bucket list for years and he did not disappoint. One of the best concerts I have been to in my 50 years of concert going. Great story telling and the music was incredible, I give it at 10 out of 10!!
He's filled with happiness and passes it off very well to others a crowd pleaser ,motivator of a great time every one leaves happy wanting more, more, more, up close and personal
