2024 Kyrgyzstan Tour – Adventure, Culture and Photography

BREAKING NEWS: Dates for our 2024 NOMADasaurus Kyrgyzstan Tour  have just been announced, and registrations are now open!

After three successful tours through this majestic nomadic country, we’re beyond thrilled to share that the dates and details for our 2024 tour of Kyrgyzstan have now been released.

Since launching our NOMADasaurus Kyrgyzstan group tours in 2018, we have been working hard to develop the absolute best adventure tour itinerary on the market for this fascinating Central Asian nation.

We have been visiting Kyrgyzstan every year since 2015, working closely with national and international tourism development organisations to help create and promote new initiatives and products for travellers.

The NOMADasaurus Tour Company is now in its fifth year of operating, and our exclusive, small-group Kyrgyzstan adventure tour hits all of the real highlights of the country, along with a few unique surprises!

“A fantastic tour in a spectacular country. Alesha and Jarryd have used their vast travel experience to put together an absolutely superb tour, suitable for all ages of intrepid tourists who are ready for an off the tourist track adventure. One of the best tours I have ever done!” Veronica, 2018 Kyrgyzstan tour participant

Just like our personal travels, this tour of Kyrgyzstan is designed to be a fun, interesting and culturally fascinating experience, with a big focus on outdoor adventures. While  the tour is professionally backed by a local, licensed tour operator , it is structured to be more like a small group of good friends exploring a wonderful country together.

The concept of our NOMADasaurus Tours is simple – We seek out superb tourism opportunities in offbeat locations and mix our days up with exciting adventures, photography workshops and cultural interactions. We have an incredible itinerary, but just like in real travel, things can change due to unforeseen circumstances. Perhaps we’ll come across a local kok boru match, or we encounter a phenomenal sunset and we halt the tour to capture spectacular photos. Weather can also play a part in our plans. We’ll be dedicated, enthusiastic, yet also flexible.

So why should you consider travelling to Kyrgyzstan? We’ve been lucky enough to  travel to Kyrgyzstan  eight times since 2015, and it is honestly one of our favourite countries. The scenery, the people, the culture, the adventures, it’s a destination we love dearly  and want you to experience for yourself.

Having the opportunity to show groups of amazing people around Kyrgyzstan in 2018 and 2019 was an incredible experience, and we are so pleased to say that each and every one of them left a piece of their hearts behind, just like we have.

“Take a leap into the unknown and stretch your horizons. Sleep in a yurt, explore wide open plains, ride a horse and learn to build a yurt. Experience the Kyrgyz culture and friendly people. Unmissable!” 2018 Kyrgyzstan tour participant

This brand new and personalised 14-day tour of Kyrgyzstan will start off in the surprisingly cosmopolitan ex-Soviet city of Bishkek, before heading into the Kochkor.

We’ll then drive to the high alpine lake of Song Kul, where we will have the chance to go horse trekking and hiking around the lake, and learn more about the nomadic shepherds that call this area home. To make it even better we will be staying in the best yurt camp at Song Kul! Staying in a yurt is a real Kyrgyz experience that you’re sure to love.

The next stop is Tong, on the edge of Issyk Kul. We’ve timed this trip perfectly to attend the Ethno Festival Teskei Jeek, a miniature version of the World Nomad Games, where we’ll see a fascinating array of nomadic sports, games, cultural shows and plenty more. This is an experience you’ll never forget.

Afterwards it’s onto Karakol, with a detour through the rock formations at Fairytale Canyon, the waterfall at Barskoon Valley and the Seven Bulls. In Karakol you’ll feast on delicious ethnic-minority cuisine, go kayaking on the lake and visit the famous livestock bazaar.

The next destination of Jyrgalan is sure to become one of your favourite places on the planet. We have two and half days to explore this captivating mountain village, and will be spending lots of time horse trekking and hiking in the peaks surrounding the town.

To finish off this amazing trip you will see some of the oldest petroglyphs in Central Asia at Cholpon Ata, and even get to try a bit of trout fishing.

“Touring Kyrgyzstan with NOMADasaurus was an amazing experience. Jarryd and Alesha known the country very well and developed a well-paced and varied itinerary with the perfect mix of cultural and outdoor activities.” Hope, 2018 Kyrgyzstan tour participant

For the entire tour you will be transported in a modern Mercedes Sprinter van, and your accommodation will be a range of 3-star hotels, family-run guesthouses and traditional yurts. Included meals will be in reputable local restaurants or home-cooked meals with families.

You will be accompanied by an experienced Western tour leader, a dear friend of NOMADasaurus, who has been living in Kyrgyzstan. His knowledge and passion for the country even surpasses our own.

In addition  there will be a certified, experienced Kyrgyz guide who is fluent in English.  This will allow you to get an in-depth insight into the local culture, and ask any of the people you meet questions without fear of having words lost in translation.

I travelled to a country I knew nothing about with NOMADasaurus Tours and will rave about how magnificent it was! Not only do Jarryd and Alesha have a top notch blog, photography and tour company, they are true humanitrians making a difference in this world and creating connection for us all. Thank you for striving to bring us all together no matter where we are from. Bravo and thank you from the bottom of my heart! Joan, 2019 Kyrgyzstan tour participant

While the itinerary is filled with exciting activities and cultural interactions, we’ve also left in some free time so you can pursue your own interests, practice your photography or simply relax in your beautiful surroundings.

This is going to be an incredible adventure to discover the highlights of Kyrgyzstan – an offbeat nation that is truly one of the most sensational travel destinations in the world.

It is like a one-day version of the  World Nomad Games , and is guaranteed to be a highlight of the entire trip.

Skazka Canyon Kyrgyzstan Tours

August 19th – Karakol

After breakfast we will go on a walking tour of Karakol city with a local guide and visit the famous Dungan mosque, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral and other highlights of the city. For lunch we will be experiencing a traditional cooking class with a Dungan family. The Dungans are a Chinese-Muslim ethnic minority group that fled persecution in their homeland and settled in the valleys around Karakol. After learning about their history and visiting one of their mosques you will be taught how to make ashlanfu, one of their most famous dishes. Then enjoy one of the most amazing feasts you can imagine.

The afternoon is free, then we will head off on a sunset kayaking mission on Issyk Kul. This is a brand new activity, and having the opportunity to go for a paddle around the stunning lake is definitely not to be missed. We’ll finish with dinner in a great local restaurant.

Dungan Meal Karakol

August 20th – Karakol to Jyrgalan

Accommodation – local guesthouse.

Today we’ll wake up at a reasonable time for breakfast at our hotel before driving out to Jyrgalan, our favourite place in all of Kyrgyzstan! This mountain village proved to be everyone’s favourite as well on our last three tours, and we’re sure you’ll fall in love with it. We have a couple of days jam-packed with adventure for you, and we’ll start with a hike in the afternoon before enjoying a traditional Finnish sauna and dinner with the local family.

Jyrgalan Tour Of Kyrgyzstan

August 21st – Jyrgalan

As tempting as it is to simply relax around the village of Jyrgalan, the real beauty is out in the mountains, and that’s exactly where we’re headed today. We’re going to go on a full-day horse trek to a beautiful alpine lake. Lunchboxes will be provided, and we’ll return again to the guesthouse for dinner. For those that don’t want to horse trek for an entire day, there are plenty of other options to do around the village or the mountains.

  • Meal Included:  B, L, D
  • Optional Activities:  If you would prefer not to ride a horse in Jyrgalan you can go on a number of guided hikes depending on your ability, or relax at the beautiful guesthouse and explore the village. For those feeling real adventurous, it’s possible to book an overnight horse trek or hike, camping in the mountains.

Horse Trek Jyrgalan

August 22nd – Jyrgalan

Today we have another full-day guided hike planned, this time to a nearby mountain ridge that offers gorgeous views over the border into Kazakhstan. It’s of moderate difficulty, so decent fitness is required. Lunchboxes will be provided along the way. We’ll have dinner back at the guesthouse.

  • Optional Activities:  If you would prefer not to go on a full-day hike you can choose to relax at the guest house, or go for a half-day hike instead to a stunning valley.

Jyrgalan Hiking Kyrgyzstan Tour

August 23rd – Jyrgalan to Chon Kemin

Today we say our reluctant goodbyes to Jyrgalan and drive towards Chon Kemin, a small village close to the north shore of Issyk Kul. For lunch we will visit a golden trout mountain farm for a delicious fresh fish spread, and then continue to the ancient petroglyphs spread out over hundreds of boulders in an open sky museum. Then we’ll check out the new Rukh Ordo Cultural Centre. We’ll be staying in a lovely guesthouse in the village of Chon Kemin.

Petroglyphs Cholpon Ata

August 24th – Chon Kemin to Bishkek

Accommodation: 3 star hotel.

It’s a short 3-hour drive to Bishkek, so we will have a leisurely breakfast and then get on the road. Along the way we’ll stop off at the Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret from the days of the Silk Road. When we arrive back in the city we’ll check in to our hotel, and the afternoon is free to relax, pack your bags or get in a last bit of souvenir shopping. Lunch is included today, and we’ll have a final group dinner in the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that we live in difficult times and that things like travel are not as certain as they once was. That is why we have put in place a robust COVID-19 policy to ensure all guests feel comfortable in their booking.

  • If the tour is forced to be cancelled due to border closures or lockdowns in Kyrgyzstan as a result of COVID-19 prior to departure, we will refund 100% of your money including deposit.
  • If you cannot travel to Kyrgyzstan due to a border closure or lockdown in your home country as a result of COVID-19, but this is not a worldwide restriction and most countries including Kyrgyzstan remain open, we will offer you a full credit of money paid to be used on a future tour.

Yes. In order to travel to Kyrgyzstan and join this tour you will need to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19. We understand that this can be a controversial topic, however it is part of our insurance policy. The tour leaders, tour guide, drivers and staff at the guesthouses we stay at will all be vaccinated.

As the global pandemic is an ever-evolving situation, this is a particular requirement that will be assessed closer to the date. At this stage it is not required to present a negative test result to enter Kyrgyzstan, however this may change. In the interest of all guest safety and the health of the remote communities we will be visiting, we may request that all our tour guests self-test prior to joining the group. We’re all adults and depending on health recommendations, this may or may not be mandatory.

For many nationalities a 60-day visa waiver program is granted for free when landing in Kyrgyzstan. There is no need for a letter of invitation or to visit your embassy beforehand. Double-check your status  here , or with your local embassy.

Food in Kyrgyzstan is surprisingly hearty and delicious. Noodle dishes and soups are common, as are fried samosas and vegetables. The most common meat is mutton, beef and chicken. On our Kyrgyzstan tours we eat in high quality restaurants and enjoy home-cooked meals in local guesthouses.

While most traditional meals are served with meat in Kyrgyzstan, all the places we will be eating at are used to serving tourists and can cater to vegetarians. Please keep in mind that the variety of fresh fruit and vegetables isn’t as plentiful in Central Asia as they are in other parts of the world, but the food will still be delicious.

If you are a vegan you will have a very hard time in Kyrgyzstan, as dairy products are used in the preparation of many dishes. Please seriously consider this before booking your trip.

We are very pleased to say that Kyrgyzstan is one of the safest countries in all of Asia. Crime is low, and petty crime against tourists is very rare. Unlike some of its neighbours, Kyrgyzstan is also relatively free of political and religious turmoil. There is one region of the country that has some issues, but we won’t be travelling anywhere near it. Safety is our number one priority.

The yurts we will be staying in are large, spacious, have a solid floor, and while they typically sleep 4-5 people, on our tours we’ll be doing our best to try and keep the numbers at 2 maximum to a yurt, although this is not guaranteed. We have upgraded our yurt accommodation this year to be of a higher quality, and you will be provided with proper mattresses and blankets.

We will be staying in a mixture of 3 star hotels and local, comfortable guesthouses. In most destinations, we have selected the absolute best options for accommodation in each town and village.

While in previous years we have had single supplements, for 2024 we have decided to do away with them as our new itinerary means that while there are plenty of excellent twin accommodation, single rooms aren’t as plentiful. After much consideration we believe it is best not to offer it as it will not result in excellent value for the customer. If you are a single traveller you will be paired with another person for the duration of the tour. If you would like to upgrade to single rooms in Bishkek and Karakol please let us know after booking your spot on the tour.

In all of our accommodation western-style toilets will be available, even at the yurt camps. Facilities ‘on the road’ might not be so glamorous, and if you need to use a bathroom in one of the gas stations or restaurants en route you may find they are squat toilets.

Our accommodation in Song Kul, Ak Sai and Chong Kemin can only offer clean, shared bathroom facilities. Please keep this in mind before booking our trip.

There will be wifi or phone service available in all places except for Song Kul. The speeds do vary from quite fast in Bishkek and Karakol, to very slow in smaller towns and villages. 3G and 4G is available in many places around the country.

The tour guide, leader and drivers will have access to phones in case of emergency. If you would like to purchase a local SIM card we recommend you do so on the day of arrival in Bishkek.

We have organised one modern Mercedes Sprinters with a capacity of 17 people each to transport the group around. This ensures we won’t be overcrowding the vehicle and will have room for luggage.

While temperatures around 40 degrees are possible in Bishkek, up in the mountains of Jyrgalan and Son Kul the temperature can drop to below freezing at night. Please bring adequate clothing for any conditions. We will be sending out a complete packing list to confirmed participants on this tour.

Yes. The highest altitude we will be reaching on this trip is in Song Kul, which is just over 3000m above sea level. On some of the hikes in Jyrgalan you can reach altitudes of over 3500m. If you have ever had any issues with altitude sickness before please seek medical advice before booking this tour. If you do experience any altitude sickness during the trip we will immediately take you to lower elevations.

In all of the hotels and guesthouses except for Song Kul there are electrical outlets to charge your devices. Our accommodation in Ak Sai also has limited electricity in some of the yurts and dining area. We recommend bringing a USB power bank to keep your accessories charged.

Yes! In general the people in Kyrgyzstan are very friendly and open to having their pictures taken. Usually all it takes is a smile and to ask if you can, and they’ll happily pose for you. In some places like the markets and bazaars the vendors prefer not to be photographed, so always ask before pointing a camera in their face. Our local guide can always assist when communicating with people.

A decent level of fitness is required to take part in this tour, as many of the activities involve hiking, horse trekking and spending time at altitude.

If for any reason you feel uncomfortable with some of the adventure activities you can choose not to do them, and other, lighter alternatives will be found for you.

There is a minimum age of 18 to join this tour. There is no maximum age limit to join, but please keep in mind the fitness levels as specified above.

ATMs that accept foreign debit cards like MasterCard and Visa are available in Bishkek and Karakol, so you can choose how much spending money you want once you are in the country. As a general idea though USD$200 should be plenty for snacks, alcohol and souvenirs for the 14 days.

Providing the setting for the 5th World Nomad Games, Kazakhstan is the world’s largest landlocked country and undoubtedly the most economically advanced of the Central Asian ‘stans’. Rich in oil and minerals, the country has undergone a transformation in recent years that has seen it emerge from the windblown steppes of Asia to become the dominant presence in the region.

Beyond its booming cities, though, lies a country still steeped in the traditions of its past. Here, amongst the high mountains, green valleys, vast steppe and desert, it is a land of stunning natural beauty. Home to a number of rare and endangered animals, its national parks hide a wealth of historical treasures and at the heart of its modern cities lie traditions and cultures that can be traced back to the ancient trading routes of the Silk Road.

After exploring the country’s natural and historical riches, the itinerary concludes with a couple of days' immersion in traditional Central Asian customs and sports at the World Nomad Games, a unique cultural event held every two years.

Kazakhstan: World Nomad Games

Day 1 Tour starts in Almaty

nomad tours 2024

The tour will officially start around lunchtime today in Almaty, giving those who have arrived on the overnight flight the chance to freshen up before taking an afternoon tour of the city. Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest city and we’ll begin with a walking tour to visit Panfilov Park, before taking in the striking Zenkov Cathedral, which lays claim to being one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. We’ll also visit the Central Museum and the Independence Monument before driving to Kok-Tobe Mountain, the highest point in the city, to enjoy some breath-taking panoramas of the city.

Day 2 Almaty - Altyn Emel National Park: Ili River, Rock Paintings & Sand Dunes

nomad tours 2024

Departing the city after breakfast this morning, we’ll drive towards Altyn Emel National Park. We’ll first stop en route at the Ili River, famed for the Genghis Khan crossing. We also visit Tamgaly Tas to see traces of the Buddhist past – beautiful images of Buddha and Burhans (Bodhisattvas) painted on the canyon rocks. Continuing our journey to Altyn Emel, we’ll stop to climb the ‘singing sands’ of the Barchan Dunes before heading to a local guesthouse in the village of Basshi, which will be our base for the next two nights.  Driving distance 340km, 6-7 hours approx.

Day 3 Altyn Emel National Park: Ak-Tau and Katutau Coloured Mountains

nomad tours 2024

Sandwiched between the Ili River and the Ak-Tau Mountains, the Altyn Emel National Park encompasses some 4,600 square kilometres of largely desert and rock. A uniquely sculpted landscape of ancient volcanoes, it is home to the colourful Katutau Mountains. It is also a haven for a range of wildlife, some of it very rare, including Central Asian gazelles and Turkmenian kulan (wild ass). Following breakfast we’ll set off to fully explore the Ak-Tau and Katutau coloured mountains. There’ll be opportunities for some easy but rewarding walks in the area and we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to our welcoming guesthouse.

Day 4 Altyn Emel National Park - Charyn Canyon - Saty: Charyn Canyon & Kolsai Lake

nomad tours 2024

This morning we leave Basshi and drive on towards the Charyn Canyon, located along the Charyn River and close to the Chinese border. Likened to the much larger Grand Canyon, Charyn drops down some 300 metres in parts and is filled with a spectacular collection of colourful formations, including the impressive Valley of Castles where we’ll enjoy a scenic walk. We’ll continue later to the village of Saty where we spend the night. This afternoon we’ll visit the beautiful Kolsai Lake and there’ll be an opportunity here to take a boat trip.  Driving distance 420km, 4-5 hours approx.

Day 5 Saty - Almaty - Turkestan: Kaindy Lake, Esyk & Overnight Train

nomad tours 2024

We’ll begin the day with a visit to nearby Kaindy Lake. A relatively young natural feature, the lake appeared suddenly in 1911 after an earthquake caused a huge landslide. Improbably turquoise in colour, the lake is famous for its forest of submerged spruce trees which, bizarrely, still retain their foliage. The clear, cold waters make it easy to see the forest and it may be possible to take a boat trip out onto the lake here to see this at close hand. Later we will drive on to Esyk to visit the museum and burial mounds here, where the famous ‘Golden Man’ was discovered. The museum contains a replica and other exhibits of the Scythian period. We then drive back to Almaty, arriving in time to enjoy dinner before we catch the overnight train on to Turkestan.  Driving distance 320km, 4-5 hours approx.

Day 6 Turkestan: Khoja Yasawi Mausoleum & Ancient City of Sauran

nomad tours 2024

Arriving in Turkestan late this morning, we will have a short time to freshen up and have lunch before visiting the UNESCO site of the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Commissioned by Timur in 1389, it was intended to replace an earlier 12th century mausoleum but remains unfinished. In spite of this, it still draws pilgrims from across Central Asia and is considered one of the best-preserved of all the Timurid constructions. Later this afternoon we drive to the ancient city of Sauran to explore its historical treasures. Returning to Turkestan for the evening, we have a chance to enjoy a traditional Kazakh dinner in the home of a local family.

Day 7 Turkestan - Shymkent: Otrar Ruins, Arystan Bab Mausoleum & Museum Visit

nomad tours 2024

After breakfast today we’ll first drive to the ancient ruins of Otrar and also visit the Arystan Bab Mausoleum before continuing on to Shymkent. The third largest city in Kazakhstan in terms of inhabitant numbers, Shymkent is one of its most ancient cities; founded in the 12th century at the intersection of the trade routes to European Russia, Central Asia, West Siberia and China. This afternoon our sightseeing will begin with one of the best historical museums in Central Asia, which tells the ancient and cultural history of South Kazakhstan. We’ll also have time to visit the thriving market where you can find various local goods and feel the vibe of an Eastern bazaar.  Driving distance 240km, 4 hours approx.

Day 8 Shymkent - Astana: City Tour & 'Golden Man'

nomad tours 2024

Transferring to the airport after breakfast this morning, we fly on to Astana, the capital city, next. Arriving around midday we’ll drive to a local restaurant for lunch, after which we’ll join our guide on a tour of the city. Beginning in the old part of the city, formerly Akmola, we’ll take a walk along the riverside to absorb the city’s astonishing skyline and view some of its most important architectural highlights. A visit to the National Museum then provides a chance to see the famous ‘Golden Man’, before finishing with the remarkable Temple of Peace and Accord and the Nur-Astana Mosque.

Day 9 Astana: ALZHIR Memorial & Sofievka Village Lunch

nomad tours 2024

Just a short drive out of the city lies the ALZHIR Memorial, a museum founded in 2007 and dedicated to the injustices and hardships faced by the wives of political prisoners during the Soviet era. One of the largest camps in the old Soviet Union, the Akmola Camp for Wives of Traitors of the Motherland was opened in 1938 and once housed more than 18,000 prisoners of 62 different nationalities. Following our visit we then head on to the village of Sofievka, whose residents retain many Kazakh traditions, including eagle hunting. We’ll enjoy a traditional Kazakh lunch, along with musical entertainment and handicraft demonstrations, before driving back to Astana late this afternoon.

Day 10 Astana: World Nomad Games

nomad tours 2024

Begun in 2014 and held every two years, the World Nomad Games provide an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the rich traditions and cultures of the Central Asian nomads. A colourful gathering of Tajiks, Tatars, Uzbeks and Uyghurs, this spectacular festival brings together an array of food, entertainment and sporting prowess that epitomises the tribal peoples of Central Asia, Persia and the Siberian steppes. We will enjoy a full day at the games today.

*Please note that the exact line-up for the World Nomad Games has yet to be published and so the descriptions given are given as guidance. Activities experienced on the day can change.

Day 11 Astana: World Nomad Games

nomad tours 2024

Another full day of entertainment and culture presents a chance to enjoy traditional wrestling, eagle hunting and the unique sport of kok-buru (headless goat polo!). Begun by the nomadic Turkic people who spread west from China and Mongolia, kok-buru is one of the most chaotic and celebrated of all the sports on offer and involves two teams of riders wrestling for possession of the headless carcass of a goat, which they attempt to deliver across the opposition’s goal line.

Day 12 Tour ends in Astana

nomad tours 2024

The tour officially ends after breakfast. Those on the group tour flights will be taken to the airport early this morning.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Key Information

The weather conditions in Kazakhstan can be extremely varied. In the mountains even in the middle of summer it can turn bitter with snow falling; at the same time mercury in the thermometers of Almaty can be nudging 40 degrees. All in all, late spring/early summer and late summer/ early autumn are considered the best times to visit in terms of favourable conditions.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

There will be opportunities to undertake some easy walks in all the national parks and although not obligatory, you should be prepared for such walks in order to maximise your enjoyment of the trip in its entirety. There are some long drives on bumpy roads involved in this tour due to the distances we need to cover, but the changing scenery should make these an interesting aspect of the trip.

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone! Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour except whilst in Saty and on the overnight train. Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.

Stroll the waterside promenade, the Skalnaya Tropa, or Rocky Path, which offers magnificent views of the Caspian Sea. In the evening, tuck into some dinner in a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

AKTAU

Visit the Aktau Museum to learn about the history and see the famous MIG statue. Continue to Astana Square to behold the mighty Caravel of Columbus Monument. Head on to Primorsky Boulevard, passing the old Melovoi lighthouse. In the evening, take a short catamaran cruise on the Caspian Sea and admire the city from the water. After, return to land and enjoy dinner in a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

AKTAU

Head into the wilds of Mangystau Province to visit the remote Valley of the Balls, the home to a multitude of spherical rock formations spread across the steppe, the origins of which are still unconfirmed. Continue to Sherkala, or Lion Mountain, which sits along the ancient silk road and is said to resemble an oversized yurt. Push on to the Sultan Epe Necropolis, which boasts an underground mosque and a garden with a well that links to a holy spring. If time allows, there'll also be a visit to the Red City of Kyzylkala, which dates back to the 10th Century. Then, return to Aktau. (B,L,D)

AKTAU

Take a full day to explore Bozjyra on the dramatic Ustyurt Plateau. Observe the "tiramisu mountains", as they are known locally, and search for fossilised shells and sharks teeth dating back to the Mesozoic Era. (B,L,D)

AKTAU TO ALMATY

Enjoy the morning at leisure before boarding the short flight to Almaty. Arrive and transfer to the hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing. (B)

ALMATY

Depart the city and drive to Medeo Gorge, home to the highest skating rink in the world. Take the cable car to the mountain ski resort of Shymbulak for amazing views of the Tien-Shan Mountains. Return to the city and visit the Bustling Green Bazaar and immerse yourself in the scents, sights and sounds of central Asia! Stroll by the stalls and take time to sample traditional food stuffs before continuing to Panfilov Park. The park is home to Zenkov Cathedral, which was (impressively!) constructed without the use of nails. See the Memorial of Glory and, if time allows, visit the Almaty underground for the chance to see its marble floors and the chandeliers hanging from the ceilings. (B,L)

ALMATY

Depart the city and drive to the picturesque Charyn Canyon. Resembling the Grand Canyon, the area formed 12 million years ago and is a popular out of town destination for Almaty city dwellers looking for respite from the bustle of the city. (B,L)

ALMATY

Head to the Huns Ethno Village to discover the ancient culture and traditions of Kazakh nomads. It's an interactive site, so you'll be invited to learn to cook "buarsak" bread and see the construction of a Kazakh yurt. Enjoy a display of traditional nomad events before a traditional lunch. In the afternoon return to Almaty and head to Kok-Tobe Hill to enjoy panoramic views of the city. (B,L)

ALMATY TO ASTANA

Enjoy a free morning before transferring to the train station to board the high-speed overnight sleeper service to Astana. This high speed service can see trains running at a mighty 200kmph! There's a bar and restaurant on board to keep you refreshed. (B)

ASTANA

Arrive in Astana and transfer to the hotel for immediate check-in. Take some time to freshen up after the train journey before heading out to explore the city. Stroll along Water-Green Boulevard and visit the Nur-Sultan Mosque, the largest in central Asia. Continue to Bayterek Tower and climb to the top for incredible views of the capital before visiting the Astana Opera Building which is the largest theatre in central Asia. Continue to the Presidential Palace which is topped with a blue and gold spire and sits within picturesque gardens. Walk by Mangilik El, the Triumphal Arch, and stroll along the riverside.  (B,L)

ASTANA

Drive out to the ALZHIR Memorial Complex, a former gulag for the wives and children of political prisoners, which was once regarded as one of the most notorious camps in Kazakhstan. The museum was opened in 2007 and also incorporates the Memorial to the Victims of Political Repression. Return to the city and delve into history at the National Museum on Independence Square, explore the architectural marvels of the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, and the grandeur of Khazret Sultan Mosque. Enjoy a final "farewell" group dinner (as we hope to be attending the Games closing ceremony on the final night of the trip). (B,L,D)

ASTANA

Today is your first introduction to the 5th World Nomad Games, or the "Olympics of the Nomads" as it's referred to by some. The whole day is free to attend the games and enjoy whatever event you may like, be it archery, wrestling, eagle hunting or kok buru (headless goat polo). (B)

ASTANA

Enjot your final day at the games. Again, the day is yours to attend whatever event(s) you'd like to, and there may be medal ceremonies to watch. In the evening, we'll try to get tickets for the closing ceremony of the games. Historically this has been a rather spectacular affair, so we're hoping for a similarly exciting event. This is a great way to end the holiday and the games! (B)

Wave goodbye to Kazakhstan and fly back to the UK. (B)

2024 World Nomad Games in Kazakhstan Announced

We here at YPT are very excited to announce the dates for the 2024 World Nomad Games, which will be held in Kazakhstan from September 8th to September 15th 2024; more excitingly, YPT will give you the opportunity to be there to be a part of the action – click here to read more.

This will not only be an exhilarating event, but more importantly, Young Pioneer Tours will be combining the World Nomad Games with an exclusive tour that combines all five Stans in the region (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan).

This is a rare opportunity to get very much up close and personal with this unique region. Move over Paris Olympics! Bring on Nomadic Olympics – events few have seen.

What are the World Nomad Games?

When we say World Nomad Games, it is less “world” and more focused on Central Asia, with some leading it to being called the “Nomad Olympics”. However, it does involve more than 3000 athletes from over 100 different countries compete in nomadic sports, culture, and lifestyle.

Originally held in Cholpon-Ata, in the Issyk-Kul Province of Kyrgyzstan, in September, the latest incarnation will be held in Kazakstan, following the 2022 hosted by Turkey September 29th and October 2nd 2022.

2024 World Nomad Games - Kazakhstan

What are the highlights of 2024 World Nomad Games?

With so much testosterone being flown about at the nomad Olympics, it is hard to pinpoint an exact highlight. There are common games such as archery, as well other favourites, such as Dead Goat Polo , as well watching people hunt with eagles, horse wrestling and some other truly difficult sports.

And if you are thinking that this is all making the real Olympics look a bit tame you are not at all wrong, with Mas Wrestling, which involves two men quite literally Grade 2 style fighting brutally over a stick!

And while we feel the word “world” might be out of place here, it is not just the old Soviet Central Asian countries taking part, but competitors even coming from as far afield as Japan and South Korea. Might we see a DPRK team one day? We live in hope, much as we do again to see a Kily Vlad Scottish contingent.

2024 World Nomad Games - Kazakhstan

Why visit the 2024 World Nomad Games with Young Pioneer Tours?

When YPT offer trips to Central Asia, we do it via the excellent local contacts we have maintained over the years, something not everyone else can offer. This includes what should be obvious things, such as getting your visas on time and sticking to a schedule, but more importantly also being able to open doors that others simply cannot. Good relations are a great help when you need tickets to an event like this.

You can read more about our World Nomad Games tour by checking out our Central Asia Tours .

Our Five Stans World Nomad combo tour will be up shortly! For all those looking to put in your leave, this is a friendly reminder that they will be held between September 8th and 15th. Email our YPT team now to ensure you are one of the first to be informed. 2024 is shaping up nicely, and it is only January!

Nomad Games Astana 2024

Tour overview.

Dead goat polo, belt wrestling and eagle hunting – the Nomad Games are exactly what they sound like. Beginning in 2014 with only ten sports, this is the fifth time the event will have been held - the first three times being on the shores of Lake Issyk Kol in Kyrgyzstan, followed by 2022 seeing Turkey have a turn, before it's returning to its Central Asian roots in Kazakhstan's capital.

This time there will be over 40 sports, with 3,000 athletes from 100 countries taking part. There are all the countries you'd expect to be involved like Kurgyzstan and Mongolia, but you might be surprised to see teams from the USA, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland, competing in horseback archery, tug of war, falconry, dead goat polo, ordo, and taigan hunting, just to name a few.

Not only can you see some of the most obscure sports you'll ever have come across, but there'll also be a traditional nomadic village built nearby, where a large yurt village will be set up, based on the times of Genghis Khan, with hundreds of yurts and wooden constructions and loads of people in national dress. Various customs and traditions will be displayed – from the birth of a child and his first steps, to a spectacular equestrian show.

We will incorporate the Opening Ceremony into our tour - probably the most exciting individual individual event of the whole thing, along with a variety of different events, and of course some sight-seeing of Astana itself.

If you like the look of this tour but the dates don't work for you, or you'd like to do part of the tour, please get in touch and let us know. All our tours are able to be split into smaller sections, we're always scheduling new tours and your dates might work for one of them, or we can always organise an independent tour.

This tour can be done as it is, but it is also the start of a 5 Stans Tour , for anyone wishing to see some more of Central Asia while you're here.

There is also a Polygon Extension directly preceding this tour, for anyone who wants to see another side of Kazakhstan as well.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

See the Opening Ceremony of the Fifth World Nomad Games

Explore the futuristic and iconic buildings of modern Astana

Explore the many events of the Nomad Games including Kok Boru and Eagle Hunting

Day 1 Sat Sep 7

  • We will spend today exploring this very spread out, but ridiculously impressive city. With the Nomad Games starting the following day, the city will be bustling and lively, so it's a great time for us to be there.
  • Built in 1997, Astana resembles in many ways other cities such as Ashgabat, or to a lesser extent Baku. Clearly built from nothing at the snap of a finger, several of the world's most iconic architects were given carte blanche and tasked with the epic job of designing an incredibly unique city.
  • We'll start the city tour with a visit to Bayterek. Sometimes referred to as the “Chupa Chup” because it looks like one, Bayterek has become a symbol of Astana. From the viewing platform, which is 97 meters high, symbolising the year of the city becoming capital, you can get spectacular views over the new city.
  • Next we'll visit the Palace of Independence, the shopping and entertainment centre "Khan Shatyr", probably Astana's most famous building. The building is in the shape of a giant, slightly lop-sided tent, and it's got everything inside that you might want. Restaurants, luxury shops, and even an aquapark which has sand imported from the Maldives.
  • What's in a name? Although currently known as  Astana, it was known as Nur Sultan (after the first President of Kazakhstan Nur Sultan Nazarbayev) from 2019 until 2022, before that the city was known as Astana for the first time. Before 1997 it was Tselinograd, and before that it was Akmola or Akmolinsk in Russian.

Day 2 Sun Sep 8

Opening ceremony of world nomad games.

  • Today marks the first day of the World Nomad Games, which is exactly what it sounds like - a colourful, vibrant and incredibly unique event, showcasing some of the coolest, weirdest and most amazing sports you'll ever come across.
  • First held in Kyrgyzstan in 2014, it was then held twice more in Kyrgyzstan before being handed over to Turkey for the 2022 games ( much to the outrage of most Kyrgyz and Kazakh ), but much to all of our relief, Kazakhstan has now been given the next one.
  • We will be attending the Opening Ceremony, which will be a concert and show-case of local and international musicians, sportspeople and entertainers.

Day 3 Mon Sep 9

Wold nomad games.

  • Today the main events will kick off, and we will be seeing as much as we can of all the variety of sports.
  • Salbuurun is a sport based on the nomadic hunting routines. They would go on several day long group hunts, for which the best eagles, horses, riders, hunters and dogs would be selected. While returning home, the most nimble horseman would put the body of a wolf that they'd caught across the saddle and would gallop ahead of the group. The others would try to catch up with him and grab the wolf, attempting to display their own strength and agility. In the end the best rider would return home to the village and to show everyone his victory, would throw the wolf’s carcass at the elder’s yurt. And thus, Kok Boru was born.
  • The most famous and possibly most novel sport is Kok Boru, known in Afghanistan and Tajikistan as Buzkashi, and sometimes referred to in English as “Dead Goat Polo”. “Kok Boru” literally means “Grey Wolf” and originates from when Kyrgyz nomads would hunt wolves and play games with them. Nowadays the game involves two teams of men on horseback, each trying to get the decapitated goat or sheep which is the centre of the game, into the other team's goal, which is actually a large pit at the end of the pitch. It's absurdly fast-paced, very rough, and extremely exciting, but the decapitation of the animal at the beginning of the game is definitely not a site for the squeamish. (Don't worry, if you don't want to see the animal actually losing its head and limbs, you can easily not watch this part!)
  • Ordo, which means “Khan's headquarters” or “Khan's Palace” is a game played by kicking knuckle bones out of a circle drawn on the ground. It represents a military map, and originally the game was used as a training scheme to teach soldiers various strategies to use to defeat their enemies.
  • Another sport most likely based on military training, though the origins of this one aren't as clear, Er Enish is the wrestling of horsemen. The rules permit a lot of violence, and it's thought that it was used to train horsemen in cruel methods of melee combat to take down their enemies. For example grabbing your opponent's ribs or the muscles in their hands, or turning out their joints, are perfectly acceptable tactics to use.
  • In the nearby Genghis Khan style yurt village, there will be eagle hunting, equestrian displays, and demonstrations of arts and crafts and other ancient domestic traditions, just to name a few.
  • Of course there are many more sports and events you'll be able to witness, these are just a few of our favourites.

Day 4 Tue Sep 10

Astana, end of tour.

  • Today marks the end of this tour. Those continuing on with the 5 Stans Tour will fly to Bishkek this morning and continue to explore Central Asia from there. Those ending here will be taken to the airport or train station, or let us know if you'd like help organising anything else.

Beside Bakhtiari Nomads Tour

Iran nomad tours with us, the genuine experience, the nomadic ceremonies, the kooch experience, the variety of tribes, the native guides, tailor-made options, things you’ll experience on an iran nomad tour, joining ceremonies and customs.

At certain times, you might get the chance to be a part of a special nomadic custom or ceremony. Each nomadic tribe will treat you to unique customs, clothing, and characteristics. A nomadic wedding party is one of these must-try experiences.

Taking Part in Kooch (Nomadic Seasonal Migration)

With the first breezes of disagreeable weather, the nomads move with all their animals and belongings toward more pleasant pastures. This migration, called Kooch, is probably the rarest thing you could ever experience. Joining one of the 2 Kooches the nomads have each year, you will be part of a unique cooperation.

Hikes in an Attractive Nature

The nomads live in the arms of Mother Nature, regions that enjoy a pleasant weather during their stay. This gives you the chance to have a refreshing walk or hike at your own pace. You might even like to have a multi-day hike mixed with nomadic charms.

Nomadic Lifestyle

Depending on the time of your Iran Nomad Tour, you might get a different taste of their gorgeous lifestyle. You may sleep in a nomadic tent, cook food over fire, milk the sheep, make bread, collect wood, churn mashk, make dairy, become a shepherd, spin wool, or weave a carpet.

THE BEST SEASON FOR AN IRAN NOMAD TOUR

The tribe you like to visit and the climate of the region they choose as their home determine the best time for your Iran Nomad Tour . Generally, summer is the best time for visiting the nomads. However, considering that nomads move for more pleasant pastures, we are able to create nomadic experiences for you all year round.

WHERE TO FIND THE IRANIAN NOMADS

Every Iranian nomadic tribe migrates twice a year. And each tribe has its own special location and Kooch path. So, depending on the tribe you like to visit and the season of your Iran Nomad Tour, you can catch up with the nomads in a certain place. With us, you can reach nomads from the main cities like Shiraz , Isfahan , Tabriz , and Kermanshah . Even if you’ve got only a day, our 1-day Iran nomadic tours make these must-see people reachable.

THE NOMADIC TRIBES OF IRAN

The nomadic tribes of Iran are as diverse as the Persian culture itself. These tribes are scattered around the country. And they each enjoy their own unique dress code, language, and customs.

♥  The Qashqai Tribe

As the second biggest tribe in Iran, these Turkic people have the Zagros Mountains as their home. They mostly move between summer pastures on Zagros highlands and winter pastures of warmer regions. At different times during the year, you can find them in Fars (especially north of Shiraz), Khuzestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Bushehr, and Isfahan Provinces. The beautiful rugs Qashqai women weave are very popular for their rich and deep colors. They are probably the most famous of all Persian tribal weavings.

♥  The Bakhtiari Tribe

These “Iranian lions” are descendants of Fereydun, a legendary hero from Persian epic. Bakhtiari people are migrants of the Zagros Mountains hillsides. They are excellent artists and masters of creating UNESCO-acclaimed handicrafts. The highlands of Zagros Mountains are their summer home. At different times around the year, you can find them in Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari, Lorestan, Khuzestan , and Isfahan Provinces.

♥  The Shahsavan

These mainly Turkish-speaking nomads roam the green northwestern provinces of Azerbaijan and Ardabil, between Mount Sabalan and Mughan Plain. Probably, the Shahsavans are the most culturally-untouched tribe of all Iranian nomadic tribes . This is mostly featured in how devotedly they stick to their unique traditional tent and traditional clothing.

♥ Kurdish Nomads

These men of mountains have the magnificent mountains of Kermanshah and Kurdistan provinces as their home. Beautiful Kurdish songs, and adorable handicrafts are of the charms of their lovely culture. They also produce a very popular animal oil.

UK Tour Operators Report Rising Tour Sales to Kazakhstan Ahead of  World Nomad Games

By Staff Report in Editor’s Picks , International on 4 April 2024

ASTANA – Tour companies of the United Kingdom announced sold-out tours to Kazakhstan with a visit to the World Nomad Games, which will take place in September in the Kazakh capital, reported the Kazakh Tourism national company on April 4.

Regent Holidays travel company has sold out tours, while another operator Wild Frontiers has half of the tours sold.

“Such a level of demand proves the success of the ethnic-oriented positioning of Kazakhstan’s tourism product and demonstrates the high appreciation of Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage and the uniqueness of the event among the international audience,” reads the release.

This year, Kazakhstan is being mentioned increasingly in prestigious international travel magazines. The high demand from foreign tourists and the media is determined by the country’s development of tourism and, notably, the World Nomad Games.

Kazakhstan was included in the top 24 must-travel places in the ranking of the world publication Wanderlust, being the only country from the Central Asian states named in the ranking.

“Year after year, Kazakhstan becomes a focal point for foreign tourists. This is because we are relatively a new destination, especially for U.S. and European readers of Wanderlust. Being listed in the publication is a significant progress in the development of domestic tourism. It is also important for us that everyone learns about the World Nomad Games . This year, we will hold it in our capital. We hope to present Kazakhstan, particularly Astana, from a new perspective,” said Kazakh Tourism Chairman Kairat Sadvakassov.

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays

  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
