What our customers say.

We have been back home from our recent nice trip and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the assistance you gave us in putting together our custom individualized trip to Western Mongolia. Everything went well and we did enjoy our trip and appreciate the expertise from you and your staffs.

Amazing and relaxing !

We stayed at Jalman Meadows for three days and wished we had arranged a longer stay. It is very remote and tranquil, all quiet, such beautiful nature, amazing views. We hiked up mountains and on flatlands, rode horses with local nomads for half a day. We also got to visit a local nomadic family in their home with the help from one of the staff who translated, and were able to ask questions about their daily life - so interesting! The gers are cozy, beds very comfortable and we slept like babies. Good food, and also available for vegetarians. Friendly staff. This was the very highight of our trip, we just loved Jalman Meadows.

5 star rating

This place is wonderful! They have excellent food, the location is fabulous and the activities are really awesome. We did the yak cart rafting and horse back riding. I highly recommend this place! The staff is thoughtful and very professional!

Simply the best camp we visited!

This was the best camp we stayed at, the attention to detail from mirrors in the gers to being able to get a hot drink anytime, made it exceptional. The staff could not do enough for you, from lighting the fires in the ger, to loading up the bucket in the shower ger. The food was good breakfast was very good. It's situation means that it cannot be seen from the main track. The gers were the best decorated & most comfortable of our stay in Mongolia.

Exotic experience

Delightful stay in a great camp where you live in a "luxury" Ger, eat delicious food and experience life in the desert. Camel Riding was a highlight. The toilet was clean and there was also a washbasin. The Camp has its own Ger where you can take a shower in warm water. The hosts were pleasant and helpful. I would recommend a stay here highly.

Wild Simplicity in a Glamping Environment

Leading up to my visit, I was researching places to stay where I could be away from social media and technology while soaking in the Mongolian wilderness. I came across Nomadic Journeys and Jalman Meadows Wilderness Camp seemed to fit that mold...

Gobi steppe ride was much more than I expected.

Gobi steppe ride was much more than I expected. Our horses and guides were absolutely fantastic. They made us feel welcome, well taken care of, safe and secure. The scenery, the horses and our guides were all delightful. The quality of the tents and meals were above what I expected. All of the elements were there -- people, horses, scenery.

For 25 years Nomadic Journeys has been a leading tour operator in Mongolia, focusing on low impact sustainable tourism. We work with numerous community groups and conservation initiatives around Mongolia. Our philosophy is to offer a low impact travel experience, visiting different places on horse back, yak cart, and camel cart over long difficult journeys on a vehicle. Read more

Adventurous

You are supported by a fantastic team.

At our company we consider ‘the earth as one country and mankind its citizens’. We welcome all our clients as part of our family, are happy about them giving us business, and are proud to introduce them to the most beautiful parts of Mongolia and its wonderful people. When visiting from a far away place, a traveler is confronted with a variety of impressions that lead to questions – some prior to arrival, others during the experience. These need to be answered to make sure there will only be positive surprises. A deep knowledge of both the Mongolian culture as well as the expectations and needs of tourists is essential. We deliver both by working in a team of diverse tourism professionals, born and raised in different parts of the world. When quality and reliability matter, Nomads is the right company to choose.

Nomads strives to operate by the saying “regard man as a mine rich in gems”. In order to build a strong and capable company, we provide our core staff of around thirty individuals with all year-round work, despite the very short travel season of approximately one hundred days. To do this, we take on a variety of complementary jobs and projects. Many of our staff stay with us until retirement and afterwards still come back during peak tourism season to fill in for the extra demand. Over our many years of operations, our crews have acquired experience with all terrains in all provinces, built relationships all around the country, and become a strong, motivated team. Our clients benefit from that attitude, as they travel together with friendly, positive people with a service-oriented attitude and a wealth of experience.

Our clients appreciate the consistent high quality of our work at Nomads!

Experience glamping  in mongolia.

At Nomads we offer spacious glamping tents – clients will be accommodated in singles/doubles/twins, and an extra bed for a child can also be provided. Tents are equipped with comfortable bedding with king size/two standard size mattresses, rugs chairs and a table. All tents will have an additional tent just behind, with a fully equipped bathroom with WC, shower and wash basin.

NOMADS IS AN AMAZING COMPANY WITH AN AMAZING HISTORY

Julia roberts  “in the wild”  with nomads.

In autumn of 1999 Julia Roberts came to Mongolia to film with Tigress Productions from the UK a documentary on Mongolia and its wild horses.

The company had sent a manager ahead to pre-arrange the work here in Mongolia . Nomads was chosen to provide all the logistics to this exceptional project.

Julia did enjoy her stay here and developed sympathy and love for the family she visited in Tuv Aimag.

Nomads History

In the summer of 1993, Nomads organized its first tours for small groups, high-ranking foreign dignitaries, and the film crew of the BBC documentary on tourism “From the Lake District to Outer Mongolia”. During the winter that followed, Nomads hosted the Norwegian Olympic Ski team in Mongolia. When Sean moved on, Nomads was transferred to a friend, Helge Reitz, who had come to and fallen in love with Mongolia in 1994 as a recently graduated agricultural engineer to support a small greenhouse development project. To support his family, which then already included three children, a proper long-term job was needed, so Helge moved into tourism. In October 1995, the company was registered under the then brand-new law of foreign investment.

Nomads has since been one of the leading travel companies in Mongolia and opened the door for many international tour operators, such as Geographic Expeditions, Hauser Exkursionen , and Abercrombie & Kent; films and documentary makers and their stars, like Julia Roberts, Monica Bellucci, and Moritz Bleibtreu; events and rallies, like the Camel Trophy 1997 and every Peking to Paris Rally since 2007. Nomads has also provided many other types of services, such as logistical support to many illustrious visitors, including Heads of State, like Angela Merkel, George W. Bush, and Vladimir Putin, or the organization of school buses for the International School of Ulaanbaatar.

In 1992, an expedition sponsored by the charity Raleigh International, led by its founder Colonel John Blashford-Snell, brought around a hundred youth over from Britain to Western Mongolia to spend a summer outdoors, doing volunteer work. The expedition – the first Western-sponsored project of its kind in Mongolia since the fall of the iron curtain – generated a lot of interest in Mongolia in Britain. Sean Hinton – a Cambridge student of Musicology that had previously spent years in Khovd Province to study Mongolia’s traditional music and language – was hired to manage communications during the expedition. In those days, there were not many Mongolians that spoke English and Mongolia was a mystery to most people in Europe. With the help of his local friends and contacts, Sean managed to solve endless logistical challenges, overcome language barriers, and close cultural gaps. After the expedition was successfully concluded, he ended up with a lot of contacts to people that wanted to visit this newly opened up, interesting place and to people that were eager to show Mongolia to the world. Sean therefore founded Nomads Tours and Expeditions – one of the first private tour operators in the country.

“A truly Mongolian experience”

– trip advisor review.

“If you want to get an idea of what traditional life in Mongolia is like while also staying off the beaten track, this is the place to book a tour. I did a three day tour in the Middle Gobi region and a 6-day tour in Bulgan Province. I stayed in Mongolia near the end of April, which is a good time temperature-wise. Both tours greatly exceeded my expectations, as did the service provided by Ger To Ger…”

“…I thoroughly enjoyed staying with these people and want to thank Ger To Ger. These tours were the best combination of feeling safe (knowing you can always call them in case of emergency) and experiencing something real and unique. Definitely a highlight of my travels, you can’t miss this if you are visiting Mongolia!”

GER to GER CLIENT REVIEW – JUNE 21, 2019

Let me start off by saying that I’m glad I made this trip. This was what I wanted when I got to Mongolia. First I went on a tour with a guesthouse, which was fine, but it was a lot of driving around, seeing big sites and areas – but it wasn’t riding on horseback! Ger to Ger presents the opportunity of actually riding/trekking from and to each nomad family, -with- nomads. I loved it.

As a solo traveller, I was going alone. I didn’t speak the language, and neither did they speak English. While this provided ample opportunity to meditate on the gorgeous plains, hills and mountains surrounding us, I worried that I might get restless and bored when I couldn’t talk with anyone. But, as it turns out, Mongolian hospitality is extremely accommodating. They won’t stop feeding you and curiously peer over your items and try to talk to you until you go away. And this is another aspect of the nomad culture I really like: If you want to be left alone, you will be left alone. Family members come and go into the ger without greater fuss, and especially before and after meals. So it’s no big deal if you do the same.

I had the most fun when I was out with a nomad guide riding to the next ger. With a phrasebook and a bit of body language, you can get really far, in spite of much confusion and delayed comprehension on my part! I had fun trying to learn and memorize new words, especially with Mr. Byambaochar, who, with some success, drilled Mongolian Ger vocabulary into my brain. I was also glad that I got to ride my horse by myself, and not be towed by the nomad, or having to follow close in his heels. I even managed a bit of galloping at the end, when I was comfortable enough with the terrain.

The tour followed the itinerary on a broad scale and with the biggest sites, but it clearly got modulated. A few things went down differently, and I had a lot of other interesting experiences which wasn’t part of the itinerary.

For example, I saw a “Worship of the Fire” ritual with my second family, where two buddhist monks entered and commenced a lengthy ceremony with the gathered families, all of them gathering in the Ger I was supposed to sleep in! I was almost falling asleep during the ritual (Buddhist droning + a day of horseback riding = lullaby), much to the families’ amusement. I found it pretty hilarious as well – after I got that craved sleep, that is. One of the monks couldn’t keep up with the rituals and had a bit of trouble with his eye-veil, drum, and well, practically everything, which also caused no small amount of ill-concealed snickers and giggles. Truly, a unique and fun experience!

This wasn’t part of the itinerary, by the way. This was just something that ‘happened’ to occur as I got there. Very interesting!

So, all in all, a very nice trip, considerably cheaper than my first one, more physically challenging (which was what I wanted) and it’s giving back to the communities that guide you, to boot. I highly recommend this as a in-depth experience of Mongolian nomadic culture. And if you learn the language before-hand, or get some basic understanding of it, oh boy, you’re going to have a fun time

GER to GER CLIENT REVIEW – DECEMBER 2019

My thoughts on my Mongolian home stays organized through Ger to Ger. First off, I must say this was one of the most unique, wonderful experiences I’ve had traveling. I spent 5 days/4 nights with four different families in the Terelj National Park area, and then traveled down to Dundgovi and spent 4 days/3 nights with three different families in that part of the Gobi Desert. In Terelj, I was a solo traveler, no one else was signed up for this trip, so I went alone. During my days near Terelj, I crossed wide green valleys, and forded rushing rivers on horseback, climbed to hilltops and contemplated the vast quiet beauty of the country. I learned to make cheese, milked cows, and even got to bottle feed an adorable baby cashmere goat. I helped prepare meals, prep fresh cheese for drying, and churned yogurt. I played with some of the most darling, engaging children in the world, and practiced my Mongolian, which was laughable to start, but slowly improved with the help of my families and the wonderful guide and phrase book put together by the Ger to Ger staff. I felt so safe and well taken care of by my families, who were such gracious hosts, and so generous with all they had. My comfort was their upmost concern, and they could not stop feeding me! (That was the first phrase I mastered… “Bi tsat san” translation “I am full”). I had my own private ger (yurt) each night, all very comfortable. At night, after some amazing star gazing, I would lay on my bed writing in my journal and fall asleep listen to the rhythmic munching of cattle or horses as they moved about freely, grazing outside my ger. In the Gobi region, I traveled by public bus, which was very comfortable, and then by jeep over a vast expanse of undulating semi-arid desert. Green with grass, as it had just rained a lot the week before. On this trip I had two other people traveling with me; a couple from Switzerland, who turned out to be just the most wonderful people and excellent traveling companions. We learned to milk goats, rode camels and horses, helped the boys bring in the goats for milking time, and in one of the homes helped prepare the meals and make cheese. We played with the children, tug of war and “Shagai” a game played with sheep ankle bones. (A fun game that can go on for hours…) One of our hosts took us for a hike into the rock formations of Baga Gazarin Chuluu where we climbed among the rocks, took in the views and explored a small cave. Nothing on either trip was very physically strenuous, what is needed is great patience and flexibility. You needed to be able to “go with the flow” as they say… As Ger to Ger states in their trip descriptions, the home stays are not “guided tours”, the families are bringing you in as a guest, but they are not there to entertain you or take you around to “see the sights”. My main purpose of this trip was to spend time with nomadic Mongolian families. They are busy with their livestock mornings and evenings, times that I joined them and watched, or helped (I truly wasn’t much help milking – I did a little, they make it look so easy!) but I could haul buckets of milk to the ger and move stools and things like that. Between milking and meals I had a lot of free time to myself; I would go for walks, play with the children, write in my journal, or just sit outside and take it all in. It is a great place to go for contemplation. Due to heavy rains and flooding, my trip itinerary changed mid-stream, the family I was with had to figure out how to get me to my next stop, plans totally changed, but it was exciting and fun. I just learned to roll with it, the great experiences come in not what was planned, but in the surprise twists – the unexpected. Stay flexible, surrender and you’ll enjoy yourself so much. If you’re fussy about food and what you eat, this is not a trip for you. The nomadic fare is simple, and most tasted good, I grew to love the suutei tsai (milk tea) and drank the sweetest best goat milk in the world there. I still miss it months later. I think the Arruul (dried curds) are an acquired taste… they are hard, and can be sometimes very tangy! The summer food is mostly dairy, lots of milk, dried meats and rice or noodles. The only scant vegetables you’ll see is potato, carrot and onion. Yet as I said earlier, you will definitely never go hungry! There are also formalities, protocols and customs within the ger that the Ger to Ger staff teach you about in a 2 hour “orientation” they give you before you go. I felt like the staff prepared me well for heading out alone. Respecting your hosts and their culture is of the upmost importance. Lastly, the most challenging thing I found on the entire trip was the language. Like I said, Ger to Ger sent me out with a booklet loaded with information and a great phrase book (which all the families are familiar with) and as none of us spoke a common language, a lot of time was spent scanning the book looking for the right word or phrase for what I wanted to say or try to understand. And then trying to pronounce it correctly was another challenge! The Mongolians are not big “gesturers” (like Italians) so waving your arms or trying to gesture something most often resulted in blank stares from your host. It could get exhausting. So that was a long review! If you’ve made it to the end here I will only say this: That a Ger to Ger trip with nomadic Mongolian families will be an adventure you will never forget. You will meet some of the most beautiful, enduring people you will ever meet, have unique adventures, and find that Mongolia and it’s people will hold a special place in your heart forever… Oh – one last thing – if you’re a woman, make sure you bring a really good sports bra- the trotting gait of the Mongolian horse is very bouncy!

“For the last 8 years when someone asks me what my favorite country to travel to is, I always answer Mongolia. It won my heart a while ago when I went to the Gobi Desert for 2 weeks and spent time staying with and learning from local Ger families. The culture and the barren landscape was so extremely different from anything I had experienced at that point and I felt as if I had just come across this hidden gem…

Eight years later it’s not as ‘hidden’, but it is still a gem. And to get the most out of it I advise you to rough it and meet and stay with locals as opposed to luxury or semi luxury ger camps and fancy hotels…what fun is that? And it’s certainly not extreme travel!”

“How to go: I have utilized GER to GER on multiple trips I love them so much. It’s not easy travel, you are roughing it, but it is my authentic travel!”

OUR FREE CHECKLIST GUIDE “what to do and what not to do” IS NOW AVAILABLE!

Via online learning area, benefits of ger to ger’s nomadic lifestyles endeavors for locals via un sdgs.

And the BEST part of our community-based operations is that up-to-80% of funds generated via our Nomadic Lifestyle Adventures goes directly to the participating nomadic families and rural community members – indeed we are actively spearheading the United Nations MDGs/SDGs for better Sustainable Livelihoods, Nature and Environmental Conservation. As for the remaining funds, they are allocated towards match-funding with our Jeep Tours to maintain sustainable operations e.g. administrative, marketing, annual training workshops, a variety of small initiatives, etc… GER to GER’s Nomadic Lifestyle Adventures is more than just another tour operator trying to make money via using the “CBT” and Responsible Travel names, we are an well-established Social Enterprise that is comprised of nomadic families and locals (direct stakeholders) that 100% rurally operate and manage their own Nomadic Lifestyle Adventures (CBTs), by themselves.

Packaged Jeep/Cultural mongolia Tours

At GER to GER we fuse modern luxuries (good 4×4 vehicles, rural accommodations, etc.) with classically “Mongolia” expedition experiences and rustic geographic terrains, nomadic cultures, rural lifestyles, etc… We try to provide that “definitively unique and true” Mongolia experience. As Mongolia is a vast country that is inspired to develop itself – those cross-country expedition experiences still exist and await the more avid adventurers, explorers and photographers!

Nomadic Lifestyle Adventures to Experience Mongolia’s Nomadism

Distinguishably different from our packaged Jeep tours, our Nomadic Lifestyle Adventures focus on  community-based tourism (CBT) routes and nomadic trails across Mongolia that are 100% managed by nomadic families e.g. hosts, guides, etc., that offer “live like a local nomad” reality experiences (you live in the extra nomadic Gers that the families provide). These Nomadic Lifestyle Adventures offer 100% exposure to real nomadic culture/lifestyles (some are active, some are shy, some are traditional while others are more modern, etc.), outdoor trails or routes via mountain passes, deserts, etc., that are great for fitness, horse riding, trekking, etc. They also offer plenty of opportunities for self-discovery, cross cultural harmonization, etc… they are about learning how to harmonize within a variety of nomadic environs – we highly recommend that you have zero “tour expectations” as it’s an adventure and anything is possible in the great outdoors! Thus our CBT itineraries are designed to be “guidance” or “suggestions” of what your can pursue with nomadic families e.g., “ice breakers” to enhance the success of your experience with nomadic families – rather than rigid tour itineraries… We never really desire our nomadic families to become tour operator nor guesthouses – that’s why everyone who travels on our CBTs should never have a “tourist mentality” of customer service and strict itinerary adherence.

From the United States, 2022

My 2022 trip to Mongolia with Keltic Nomad was one of the highlights of my life. An amazing experience being embedded in the horse culture of a beautiful land with some of the most capable and genuine people I’ve ever met. The Mongolian staff and my fellow travelers became fast and lifelong friends immediately and we felt like a big traveling family as we crossed the amazing countryside on our plucky little horses. I can’t recommend the experience highly enough and would go back in a heartbeat.

When I first signed up to go to Mongolia I didn’t know how many adventures I would be having exploring the beautiful country from lovely sunny days to hail and rain the day whole thing always brings a smile when I think about it. Riding some amazing horses and meeting new people that I hope some will become life long friends.

The landscape is beautiful and the horses are just fantastic. A very well organized trip on fast and sure-footed horses! The Mongolian tour guides, as well as the whole team, gave you the feeling of being in very good hands. Mongolia: a country to fall in love with!!!

Mongolia itself is a wonder and a whole new universe to explore, with so much unknown and curious, and at times with challenging weather conditions. Having a team of caring and experienced people to make you feel safe was crucial - and we had exactly that with Keltic Nomad on our midsummer 10 days tour last year. Amazing experience, truly one of a lifetime. Heart-worthy thanks to the whole crew for making it flow from start to end!

Ali Nomani

From Pakistan, 2023

What a beautiful place to ride through. And an amazing, always smiling kind of team. We got the best horses, training on how to ride them, enforcement of safety and overall a very chill vibe to the ride. Not the kind of riding where you are pressed to run and wake up every morning and get going. Feels both like a vacation and an adventure together.

Abi Hunt

From Scotland, 2023

Mongolia is truly the land of freedom and I wouldn’t choose anyone other than the amazing people at Keltic Nomad to show me the most amazing off-track routes - both for group tours and solo adventuring. I joined KN for some group horse riding touring, and it was organized brilliantly with vehicle support and very hospitable and caring families. The horses are very well cared for, which is always important to me. KN also helped me with my solo horse trek and provided the rental horses. My guide knew the best routes and stayed with me for as long as I wanted. I never felt unsafe or worried.. even when I was on my own. I would highly recommend this.

Tour Guides Nomadic Trails

So we had the perfect balance of being safe, whilst having a extremely exciting adventure in rugged, remote Mongolia.

I highly recommend Nomadic Trails. I was slightly hesitant to go to horse trekking in Mongolia because it is quite remote and could end up being a lousy holiday if you had a badly run tour and poor quality horses. I was recommended Nomadic Trails by a friend who had been on five trips with this company.

The Mongolian culture and people was such a pleasure. I have had several of my own horses over the years, and I have to say none have been as awesome as my Mongolia horse, he had so much personality and was a gun, so much fun to ride! Riding through Mongolia was an experience I will never forget. The country is spectacular and vast, photos and video could never do it justice, you have to see for yourself.

I am hoping to go back on another tour with Nomadic Trials again for sure. Five stars is well deserved for this crew. Definitely choose Nomadic Trails.

The meals they prepared for us were far better than anything I ever make myself at home. We were kept warm, fed and safe.

The Mongolian outback is rugged to say the least and some of the most beautiful landscape I’ve ever seen and our drivers navigated through it all seamlessly. Of course there were setbacks like getting stuck in the mud a few times and needing to reroute due to landscape issues, but it was all part of the adventure.

Our tour leader, Khulan, was absolutely amazing and remains a friend of mine to this day. I cannot say enough good things about this company. They did such a good job of showing us their country and exposing us to their culture. It was an experience I will never forget.

Our wilderness camp was within walking distance of the festival grounds in an open valley near a small stream offering serenity with sweeping views of the valley. The Ger I stayed in was very nice and private.

Great cooking staff and food and the opportunity to meet tribal elders and be hosted and entertained by local and regional nomadic eagle hunters. Options for horseback riding and other private eagle hunter encounters.

If you are looking for a more intimate eagle festival experience, I highly recommend traveling with Nomadic Trails.

We spent 10 days camping with the horses in western Mongolia with a couple of days in Bayan-Ulgii and Ulanbataar. I have so many amazing memories of this trip.

Tulga, our guide, and our support crew were outstanding and we always felt very safe and well looked after. Our cook was very good. I became especially fond of Tulga and Bolat (our horseman) Tulga is friendly and funny, and Bolat was shy, but oh so cheeky once I got to know him!

We had two novice riders, with myself and another being experienced riders. Our horses were supplied by the first family we met in the Bayan-Ulgii countryside. They were exceptionally well cared for and very well behaved. These mongol horses are incredible and temperaments outstanding. They were very well picked in nature for our traveling members.

I nicknamed my horse Constable Care (Aussie joke) and he definitely lived up to his name. He was very careful and did a great job looking after me. He was so tolerant of me plaiting him up like a show pony, and not a bite or kick in him. The support crew played a joke and did his mane up in the traditional manner the next day we rode out!

My favourite memory of Constable Care was on our last day with the horses. Our novice riders walked behind with Bolat, while Tulga, myself and our other experienced rider galloped back to our first family. After riding to our slowest members, it was great to stretch our legs. Constable Care was amazingly fast.

What a way for a character building adventure! We went after peak tourist season, so the weather was a little more unpredictable, but still quite tolerable. So many fond memories, from 17 sleeping in a family Ger, tasting mares milk in the street of Bayan-ulgii, admiring Bronze Age rock art, watching a late season small town nadaam festival, our horseman singing for us, ice cream and beer on a dry day, museums, haggling for art in chiggis khan square and shopping in UB. All in the increiable landscape of Mongolia and the Altai mountains.

My wind horse was definitely reinvigorated and Mongolia is calling to me. When the time is right I will be contacting Tulga and Nomadic Trails again.

on our way to and from the reindeer people and Tulga ensured that our time with the Tsaatan was respectful and he clearly had an excellent relationship with them built over a number of years. We were always consulted over decisions about activities and where to stay.

The chef who accompanied us throughout the trip was really good (meals included freshly baked bread, pancakes, pizza…). And we were lucky with the weather too.

Very professional guiding in what you ever could want. Horse driving, driving trough landscapes, hiking, … it is organised on the most comfortable way as possible.

A Trip with Tulga is more than amazing. He knows every corner of his country and loves to share every aspect of it. He has a large contact list and is very welcome in every community. And wherever you put your tent, you will be astonished of the beauty of the scenery.

With Nomadic Trails it is easy going travelling because they take care of everything you ever could need on your trip.

So planning a trip to Mongolia? Don’t forget to contact Nomadic Trails. They will propose an itinirary on your level and expectations so it will be a once in a lifetime experience you’ll never forget.

I visited Mongolia 3 times now and planning to go next year again, offcourse with Tulga and his crew.

thanks to Nomadic Trails. Tulga and everyone on his team were so accommodating to any of our requests and even helped us navigate our way through the local market and barter for souvenirs. Truly delicious food as well at every stop. Phenomenal all around. Thank y’all for everything! Unbelievable experience in Mongolia!

so the logistics of traveling was already potentially more complex. Every day, Tulga and his team showed up with a smile, and was very knowledgeable and thoughtful in accommodating to our needs while showing us the most breath-taking scenery and local cultures. We’re forever grateful for the Nomadic Trails team and our life-changing journey.

We developed such tight bonds with the staff who caravanned with us that all of us talk about going back over and over again. The food was extraordinary, which was something we definitely did not expect, given how far away from civilization we were meant to be for most of the trip, and I can still taste the wonton soup and smell the campfire from our night spent on a ridge overlooking the mountains a few hundred miles north of Murun. I recommend this group to everyone I know going to Mongolia, and when I go back, I will be definitely reaching out to Tulga and his crew to handle everything.

We left from Hong Kong, which was presented some difficulties as there was a typhoon which meant that we could have been delayed, as well as the fact that there was an issue with our code share flight which prevented us from checking in online. Temuulen was great as she called the airline for us to see what the issue was, and was messaging us to check whether we made our flight on time. When we arrived we were fetched without any hassle and were pleasantly surprised that the car we were in was a Land Cruiser, which proved to be very comfortable. On the first evening Temuulen told us that the route we had wanted to go on was washed away by unexpected rain, but said we could still go if we really wanted to. We really appreciated that as my friend had singled out one of the attractions on that route as the reason for the trip. Our driver, Bataar was excellent. The journey was comfortable and both Bataar and Temuulen ensured that every request we made was catered for. We even asked for a last minute change of itinerary on the last day we was accommodated even though it was an extra 3 hour drive. All in all we were really pleased with Nomadic Trails, the trip was a once in a life time experience and made better by Bataar and Temuulen.

expectations and we went back for another trip the next year. The culture, food, horses and especially the country were wonderful. We highly recommend Nomadic Trails if you want to see real Mongolia.

We had a wonderful guide Tulga fluent in English and looking after every detail as well as arranging unforgettable visits with Mongolian families to horse riding to taiga. We took a road trip without roads from Ulaanbaatar to the taiga visiting the nomadic people who lives with a reindeers. Amazing sceneries that any photos cannot fully describe! It was amazing! We really got a first hand appreciation of the nomadic way of life and a chance to see incredible Mongolian scenery as well as herds of reindeers, horses, yaks, sheep and goats. And not only about the drive to the countryside, the culture, the food and the gers, but also about the people we met. During our journey into deep countryside into a wilderness, our guides the Nomadic trails team settled beautiful lunch tables on open air, sometimes near to beautiful river, sometimes in a highlands, or woods. And food was amazing! We felt safe, happy and nourished! They was patient and helpful throughout our trip. I’m so happy and grateful to Nomadic trails for having one of the best journeys in my life!

hopping on our horses to go to the Tsaatan reindeer tribe, then finally staying at one of the best camps in Murun. Everything was so well-organized. Noteworthy is Tulga’s relationship with the tribe, which is an important consideration when we were planning this trip as we want to be as respectful as possible to the tribe for them not to feel uneasy during our stay. Our group was delighted to have raw and authentic Mongolian experience without having to sacrifice comfort – we had delicious food, great accommodation and comfortable transportation all throughout our trip – thanks to the incredible team of Nomadic Trails!

but a real intense experience of this amazing place! I want to thanks all of the Nomadic Trails Staff for the amazing experience! Thanks thanks thanks! Nomadic Trails is the best to travel in Mongolia!

Ulaanbaatar

And so Mongolia goes about being magnificent, in the quietest and humblest of ways, surprising vistors with it’s immense beauty, and it’s magical ability to slow you down and re-centre you from within. Let’s call it a retreat for the adventurous. The capital and a great place to do an international culinary tour. You’ll be spoilt for choice of restaurants here. When I first arrived in Ulaanbaatar, I noticed how sweet is was to see friends affectingly arm in arm, strolling down the street together, whilst I raced past making a mission of my evening walk. ‘C’mon guys, can’t you see I’ve got places to be?’ was ticking through my mind, still in work mode, crossing off the to-do list. It was then music to my ears that Mongolian time very simply consists of before noon or afternoon. Ah bliss, I thought, I’d never be late again!

Mongolian countryside

As we headed into the vastness of the Mongolian countryside, it was the calm that struck me the most. 360 degrees of breathtaking wilderness, and although I tried, I don’t think the camera can do it justice. An energy so old and powerful, pure and untouched, this place is simply magical. Collectively our group began to relax and laugh our way into truly soaking up this experience. (as well as working out all our remarkable 6 degrees of separation!) Even the breakdowns and delays were greeted with laughter, knowing the worst that could happen was that we set up camp in a different piece of paradise. Over 3 days of journeying by plane, 4WD and horseback, we arrived at our destination, the Reindeer Tribes living on the Siberian steppe. We collectively gasped as we emerged from the forest to see the smoke coming from the first of the teepees. Like stepping through the Narnia door, we entered a different world, so surreal, and such an honour to be one of the few travellers allowed to visit each year. Yet thanks to the many years of rapport established by our guides, it felt like we were welcomed home, with freshly brewed tea and happy kids eager to play. Living nomadically means that packing up all your earthly possessions (including satellite dish), riding 6 hours, and setting up camp at the next season’s residence, is all in a days work. Foraging and hunting for food, whilst surviving -40 degrees in the winter, these people are next level resilient (as well as the original minimalists). The Tsaachin are innately connected to the rhythms of nature as well as interconnected to each other. With a gentleness, humility and warmth that we seem to have lost. I hope the Tsaachin can sustain their lifestyle for generations to come, as we have so much to re-learn from their wisdom. Ah if only I could have paused time, stayed a while longer and asked another 1000 questions. And so my memories of Mongolia linger fondly, with my wind horse (soul) happy, hoping that one day I’ll return to fill my cup with Mongolia’s calm once more. Thank-you Lisa, Tulga and your phenomenal team for creating an atmosphere as magical as your country. (and Puujee, how you created 3 course meals for the 10 of us each day on a camp stove, was flippin’ amazing!) . Because positive impact travel grows our shared humanity, which grows compassion, which ultimately grows a more peaceful world. And when in Mongolia, a polar plunge is a must isn’t it?

is very proud of his country and he showed us very nice sceneries, he took us to families living in gers where we shared songs and snacks! Other times whe were welcomed by a family and asked to share their meal and even their ger where we could spend the night. When crossing the country, we would always stop in the evening at the most wounderful places to spend the night. It’s unbelievable how Tulga is able to find his way without Satnav!!!! So we could admire the marvellous landscapes, enjoy the absolute stillness, dream into the amazing sky covered with millions of stars. And in the morning we were welcomed by Pudge, a very good cook, whose meals are realy delicious and colorful. Nice table, nice chairs in an open air eating tent: *****. The careful drivers who took us through the country are very friendly and helpful. There was always one of them helping for the setup of my tent. I’m not fluent in Mongolian(!), but no words are needed with this friendly people! They always stay good tempered even when the roads are soaked and hard to cross. The complete team keeps joking and laughing. Thanks to the people of Nomadic Trails and their perfect organization I have had a wounderful experience and I still have enjoyable memories…. I’ll go back!

The experience staying with the reindeer tribe was incredible and something not to miss in northern Mongolia. Overall the whole tour was well organized and I would have another tour in the future.

Our entire trip was well organised and our needs catered for. I highly recommend Nomadic Trails to anyone who wishes to discover Mongolia.

of Tulga and his two drivers. Tulga is knowledgeable in various fields and he is a skillful photographer too. His humour kept us entertained at all times. Mongolians are pleasant people. The community is united and helpful. The Ger camps that we stayed are better than our expectation in terms of facilities and food. It was an enjoyable trip except that it rained in the last two days of our trip. We would plan another trip with Nomadic Trails next year. Wonderful photography tour with Nomadic Trails.

made sure to help us in a way that was aligned with our intentions for the trip. i felt very cared for and supported by the whole team. their flexibility and strong guidance were in perfect balance. and it was really fun! we danced and laughed enough memories to carry me through life. Nomadic Trails feels like family to me now. their connection to the local people and lands were inspiring and completely heartfelt. the food that was prepared in the wilds was exceptionally amazing. the places we went to were extraordinarily beautiful. i would not go on a spiritual journey to Northern Mongolia with anyone else!

Traveling through Mongolia with them has been an experience to last a lifetime. Both crews from Nomadic Trails were so kind and fun to travel with. We learned so much about the Mongolian people and culture as we traveled through some of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. To say we had fun is an understatement. Most importantly, to see the relationships that Tulga and his group have with the different shamans, Dukha tribe and monks was really heartwarming to witness. It is clear that they treat everyone like family and that is such an unique way to travel through a foreign land. If I ever come back to Mongolia I will absolutely travel with them. Both of the groups that we traveled with through Mongolia were different and the team at Nomadic Trails were so flexible and supportive to our needs.

and caliber of care that Tulga, Naraa, and the Nomadic Trails family who supported our journeys was truly wonderful. We were quite dynamic and also very unique in our wants and needs, but this was met with great patience and support. The food was wonderful (thank you Pujee and Saruul)! And the crew and drivers worked tirelessly and often so jovially to support us and keep us safe. I think what touched me most deeply is the connection they each have to their homeland and people- we often stopped along the way to make offerings which was so important to our group… and it was a part of their lives in a beautiful, integral way that taught us so much. They also took care to pick up trash along the way and at Ovoos and shared great care and love to the land and animals. And, the true and respectful relationships Tulga has cultivated with those who hosted and held us along the way, especially in the Taiga, was very touching. They have taken great care and time in cultivating these connections and upholding sacredness and honoring, being sure that the people are supported too, and it is felt. And the sacred places they led us within their culture and nature were truly so special. I would love/be grateful for the honor to travel with them again and I couldn’t imagine being in Mongolia without them! Thank you, Nomadic Trails, so much for accommodating us, guiding us, welcoming us, and caring for us so thoroughly and so lovingly. It was such an honor to be with you all. It is a precious gift I will carry in my heart forever.

brought us to all the sights in the city — from the lookout point, to the markets and museums. Then for a few days, we headed out to the countryside where he arranged for dogsledding, horseback riding, and hikes. I cannot emphasize how wonderful the experience was. Tulga was beyond knowledgeable and helpful with our every request. Thank you, Nomadic Trails.

for 8 days through the steppe camping over night or staying with local families in their gers. I was very impressed with the staff and the thought they put into our itinerary, and considerations for our comfort. They erected our tents for us each night so that we could relax after our days ride.

The food, even in the outback was good, the contacts that the team had with local people enriched our experiences, (especially when plans changed last minute due to unforeseen weather moving in across the mountains).

This was a most interesting trip and the knowledge of the staff made it even more enriching. I would like to return to other parts of Mongolia in future and would travel again with the team at Nomadic Trails, they are professional, fun, informative and friendly. Can highly recommend.

and he was able to provide a varied, personal, unique experience. I wanted to create my own personal itinerary and Tulga had the knowledge, contacts, experience and sense of adventure to make that happen. I’ll be returning in 2020 to travel with Nomadic Trails again. Can’t wait!

of our tour where on every occasion we had comfortable, modern and clean transport waiting for us wherever we went and never did we have to wait for our meals either.

As a vegetarian, my needs were completely met on every occasion with no fuss. All of our accommodation was also very comfortable, and whilst sleeping in gers, we even had staff members light our fireplace to ensure that we slept warm during each night. Not only was the service exceptional, but it was also incredibly friendly where we were always greeted with a smile and warmth. Our tour guide Tulga was very entertaining and extremely knowledgeable.

I would personally book a tour with Nomadic Trails again in a heartbeat!

They worked very well as a team to make sure we are comfortable (including nature calls) . While communications is limited with the drivers .. we managed to express our joy and fun.

The booking and administrative details and follow up needs to be improved.. response is generally slow and communications not so clear. There was a hiccup in the beginning , dinner booking was not made in UB and we had to walk a good one hour before we settled on one available dining place. The next two weeks were rugged .. an unconventional travel that we embarked on in 2 jeeps traversing 3000 km. The country its very vast and have beautiful spots to show off and the culture has long history. It was truly a out of the norm experience to stay at gers ( keep getting our head knocked for the low doors)… using common toilets and showers … limited electricity and water supply hours… we were very happy when we had ensuite toilets or ensuite shower/toilet for some accommodation. The food is better than we had expected and the tour agency provided extra fruits for us at our request.. We love the flaming cliffs ; the terej park; hiking up volcano to name a few… but most of us the journey in the jeep is unforgettable.. the bumpy; rocky; winding rides and the beautiful landscapes as we ride along. Buyna, Derem & Baija became a part of the travel fun too!

Tulga is truly one of a kind. We used Nomadic trails for a one month trip across Mongolia as show in the feature documentary “The Horse Boy.” I’m not exaggerating when I say that the trip, the incredible experience, the magic – none of it would have been possible without Tulga and his guides. One thing we didn’t fully show in the film is the friendship that developed between the family, the film crew, and Tulga and his son. He went out of his way to make our vision come to life and was one step ahead of us in every detail of the planning and execution. His passion for Mongolian culture is unparalleled as is his dedication to making your experience one that you will never forget!

It was a very memorable trip ful of actions, and funny happenings. Our guide, Tulga was very professional and never the less very patient. Tsetsgee, our cook made an excellent job as well, she was able to cook perfect dishes even in the middle of nowhere. See you soon guys! … because every great journey needs to be continued!

Tulga, our tour guide is very knowledgeable and helpful, his driving skills also worth a praise and believe me, on these roads, it is a big advantage for someone like me with a motion sickness. They provided a cook for us, who exceeded all of our expectations. If you want a truly amazing experience just go with them!

Mongolian nomadic life

Meet 72 year old Nanjilmaa who has spent her whole life as a nomad in Mongolia and has no plans to stop now.

Nomadic life in Mongolia

Inside a traditional Mongolian tent, 72-year-old Nanjilmaa serves a fermented milk drink and passes around a plate of dairy candies.

She is a nomad – in the way that the people of her land have been for centuries. And she’s invited me in to learn a bit more about her culture.

It would be easy to, at first glance, think of Mongolia’s nomads as somehow old-fashioned or impoverished. But that would be wrong.

They live on the land not for necessity but because of choice. This is a Mongolian way of life and these people are the backbone of the country’s heritage. I think seeing this side of the country is one of the best things to do in Mongolia .

Looking around Nanjilmaa’s tent – or ‘ger’, as it’s called here – it’s clear to see that this is a home.

Comfortable couches covered in rugs, a small cupboard, a table with family photos, a wood stove – and even a fridge and a television.

For a nomad, a ger is not temporary, even if the location is.

Nanjilmaa proudly introduces herself by saying she has 2 horses, 20 cows, 50 sheep… and 8 children and 16 grandchildren.

Her husband has passed away so she now lives in her ger alone. But her youngest son and his family live in separate ger that they always put next to hers.

The easiest way to think of Mongolia’s nomads is as animal farmers. But because the harsh seasons of the country mean dramatic changes in weather conditions and food availability, these farmers move locations throughout the year to the most appropriate spots.

In winter, they often move in front of a mountain for shelter. In spring, it’s closer to a river, in summer right next to a river for water supply, and in autumn up a hill to collect hay for winter time.

Most nomads move at least four times a year but some might move up to 30 times in a year, especially if they have a lot of animals that eat through the available food quickly.

Nanjilmaa has dressed up today in one of her best homemade traditional outfits. She knew she would have visitors and I think she’s honoured to have us – although I’m the one who feels honoured to be here.

At one point, as she’s talking about how she likes the clothes she has on because they have big pockets, she pulls her mobile phone out of one of them.

It’s a reminder that living in a ger does not separate you from the modern world.

The television against the side of the tent also demonstrates that Nanjilmaa watches a lot of Korean soap operas – she loves them. Her favourite show, though, is Mongolia’s Got Talent (yes, that’s a real thing).

I try to imagine what it would be like, sitting in a tent at night, snow all around, watching a singing competition.

(If you’re wondering where the power comes from, in some of the spots she camps (particularly the winter ones) she can connect to the electricity of local towns – otherwise she has a solar power device.)

There are some aspects of modern life that Nanjilmaa misses, though. For example, she tells me that she would like to have a proper shower because she has to heat up water in a pot and wash herself with that.

It’s not enough to make her want to change her lifestyle, though. She loves it out here.

“I don’t like cities,” she says. “Too crowded, too stressful.”

“It’s so free here. I get out and see the mountains and there’s nothing to be bothered with.”

“In the cities, to be alone you go into your apartment. Here, to be alone, you go outside.”

The only time that Nanjilmaa really wishes she was in a city is when she unexpectedly runs out of things like flour or rice and the shops are so far away. Then again, her children often bring her supplies when she needs them.

Other than the one who travels with her, the other children live in Ulaanbaatar – there’s an economist, an engineer and a lawyer amongst them.

They also come and help her move when it’s time to change the location of her camp. It takes about an hour to take everything down, about an hour to move it, and then about three hours to put it all up again.

She often just moves to the same seasonal spot she was in the year before. The gers tend to leave a mark on the ground for at least a year and, out of respect, nobody else would set up camp in the area if they can see one.

Mongolia is in a period of rapid change. It’s becoming increasingly urbanised as more and more of its citizens move to Ulaanbaatar, seeking an education and a professional job over the traditional nomadic life.

That is creating pressures in the city but it’s also making things difficult in the countryside as the size of family units drop and less people are left to do the work.

But Nanjilmaa still sees a bright future. She will encourage some of her grandchildren to live on the land and continue the family traditions. She doesn’t see the nomadic lifestyle disappearing.

“It will still be strong because the main reason is our livestock is the main economic sector of Mongolia,” she says.

“This brings the most income to Mongolia, so it will still be there. But maybe it will become a bit more modernised and maybe people will move less.”

It’s hard to know whether her prediction will turn out to be accurate. Nanjilmaa is correct that livestock has been Mongolia’s main economic activity… but mining and other industries are increasing and that could have an effect.

For now, though, those thoughts don’t bother her.

She’s had a happy 72 years and sees only more happiness ahead of her on the land with her 2 horses, 20 cows, 50 sheep… and, when they visit, her 8 children and 16 grandchildren.

Loved this piece! I recently applied for a job in Mongolia, but unfortunately didn’t get it. I would love to meet someone like Nanjilmaa. I find the combination of old and new lifestyles especially interesting.

Hi there, My name is Temuulen. Born and raised in Mongolia. I worked with many NGO’s in my country. Maybe i could help out. What kind of job are you looking for? I could ask around. Cheers.

I’d love to live and work in Mongolia, I’d be truly blessed if I could get the chance to live with a family of nomads in the future. Mongolians truly have something beautiful there that is worth preserving.

What a beautiful encounter! This just moved Mongolia way up on my wishlist.

Wonderful blog and pictures. Adding Mongolia to my wishlist.

We love this people who lives in the countryside. They are inheriting our culture and nomadic lifestyle.

This is one true life story. She reminds me, my grandmother. I was born and grow up in Mongolia. But I was raised in the city. When I was about turning to a teenager my parents sent me off to the countryside, where is the life is just like Namjilmaa’s. Living in a ger/yurt, herding a sheep, eating a dairy food for breakfast and lunch, riding a horse and playing in the open green field with neighboring children were a good but reluctant time for me. I missed a city. Later on, when I was guiding an international team of visitors to the land of nomadic people in the Southern Gobi Desert, Western Mountain, and Northern Taiga Mountains I realized more our Mongolian culture and lifestyle is unique. After I travel around the world to about 30 countries I feel happier and satisfied with my own culture and life here. There are no stress and living in fenceless green steppe is really something. I go every summer to the Mongolian countryside and make “real” vacation. This is great writing, I enjoyed it. Thank you, Michael.

I have great Mongolian neighbours in Belgium, they originally come from a big nomad family. I just saw pictures from their holidays spent with their family and I was so inspired by this, that I wanted to know more about their way of life. Many thanks for this article, this gave me the chance to know more about my super friendly neighbours!

Thanks for the amazing post….keep sharing.

What gifts is appreciated to be given to nomadic families when one visits to stay for a week or 2 or a month? How much does it cost to visit and live with a nomadic family for a month. Is this realistic to work with them to eat with them and just experience a new lifestyle

Yes, of course you can do that. Please contact us and we will make our best efforts to make your stay in Mongolia safe and memorable. Thank you.

Before i started reading about nomads, i almost didn’t even know that Mongolia was a country. Honestly. This really inspired me, and i honestly learned a lot about how people can live. I am also currently working on a presentation about nomads in my school, so this also helped me a lot for my project.

About Mongolia

Nomad lifestyle.

Mongolia is one of the nomad countries in the world. Mongolian nomadic people move into place to place 2-4 times a year.

Since the Hun Empire, Mongolians have been raising their five domestic animals. This includes sheep, horse, cow, camel, and goat in the broad region of forest, steppe and Gobi desert. Mongolia has 4 seasons and nomadic people move into place to place 2-4 times a year as well as it is depending on livestock's pasture. Mongolian nomad people always following their livestock. Because livestock knows where is the best pasture. Mongolian herders live in Mongolian traditional dwelling (covered felt) Ger.

Mongolian Yak

Mongolian livestock

Mongolian five domestic animals are  sheep, horse, cow, camel, and goat.  Mongolia is the land of livestock. Now in Mongolia has over 55.9 million livestock, including 24.9 million sheep, 23.6 million goats, 3.8 million cattle, 3.3 million horses and 367.9 thousand Bactrian camels.

On these five animals depends the prosperity of the country. The sheep and goat provide mostly meat, wool and leather. The cow is eaten and milked, and its hide provides leather often the yak is used instead of the cow, or else together with cattle. The she- yak's milk is fatter. The yak seems more active than the cow, and as one approaches a mixed herd, the yak's - hairy as terriers - are always the first to run off, lofting their- feathery tails like pennons. Also there is hainag, a yak cow hybrid. (The reverse hybrid, from a Mongolian bull with a female yak, is possible, but not used.)The male hainag is strong, stronger than either parent. It is burly beast with hair longer than its mother's and shorter than its father's. The female produces more milk than the female of either parental stock. But its calf, the ortom, is a weakling, and breeding is not taken other.

Milking the Goat

The horse is kept as a mount and for milk. Mares must be in foal a great part of the year. Several times in journey you will come across twenty or thirty horses crowded, noses together close to Ger. Mongols say they milk better if you let the foal start them. The means of transport is the camel. His wool warm to the rider, is taken also. But he is not eaten, nor his female milked, save perhaps on the edge of the desert where no other livestock viable. Camels are formidable. The males, when their minds are on mating, foam at the mouth and fight. Camel herds are usually smaller than those of other animals. Camels and coats are shorn but once a year. Sheep sometimes twice. A Mongolian sheep gives three or four pounds of wool a year.

Being Mongolia (lifestyle of Mongolian nomads)

Most mongolian nomads live in round huts, but the tsaatan people use cone-shaped tents.

The Land and the nomadic lifestyle have shaped almost every aspect of the lives of Mongolia’s people. For centuries, Mongolians moved with their herds, going wherever the land and the weather took them. This gave them a deep love for the land and for freedom. Modern Mongolia has also been affected by the long years of communism and by the swift changes that have happened recently. These influences have combined to give Mongolians a unique outlook on life that combines ancient tradition with new ideas.

Mongolians maintain a strong connection to the land

The nomadic people of Mongolia have learned how to live in harmony with their surroundings. They have adapted to the country’s extreme environments and weather. They can move from areas that are not suited for grazing to place that are better for themselves and their livestock.

The Nomadic Tsaatan people live in northern Mongolia. They raise reindeer, which they use for transportation, milk and meat.

Rural nomads and people who live in the cities tend to have a big difference in attitudes. Mongolians in the cities tend to act more “Western” and enjoy all the advantages that a city has to offer. The rural nomads live with few possessions and revere the natural world. Most of the country’s political and economic changes have not affected the nomads the way they have people in the city. Nomads take the changes in stride and keep moving. Though the nomads have few possessions, they have rich culture and tradition that are part of Mongolian spirit.

A nomadic family erects a ger, it takes about an hour to put one up

The Mongolian yurt or ger as it is known in Mongolia itself, has been used for thousands of years by the nomads of Central Asia and is still a common sight in many countries in the region.

With its unique design, structure and practical features, the yurt is still a popular habitation. Mongolian yurts (ger) are attracting interest from people in many parts of the world as an ecologically friendly and attractive living space that can be used for a variety of purposes.

The terms yurt and ger are interchangeable and describe the traditional portable Mongolian habitation consisting of a wooden frame and felt walls.

Yurts (gers) are designed to be easy to take apart, transport, and reconstruct. Despite this portability, they are warm enough to keep the coldest winter temperatures at bay and strong enough to withstand strong winds and the demands of a whole family.

The yurt (ger) is a circular structure built using a wooden, accordion frame that can be easily taken down, made compact for carrying, and reassembled. On this frame are placed three to four layers of felt, traditionally made from sheep’s wool, and an outer layer of waterproof canvas. The felt and canvas are secured to the wooden frame and the resulting structure can stand securely in one place for months or even years at a time.

The wooden frame of the yurt (ger) is held together by opposing stresses designed into the structure and by horse, yak and camel hair straps. A central column holds up the struts of the roof, which fan out from an opening that accommodates a stove pipe and can be opened up to the elements on a warm day or covered in the event of rain or cold temperatures. The lower sides of the outer wrapping of the yurt can also be raised to allow air to circulate freely to cool the interior on warm days.

What are gers used for?

If you have been to Mongolia, you will surely already have an idea of how you wish to use a yurt. However, we would like to provide some ideas on how a yurt (ger) might contribute to your lifestyle for those who do not have this experience. Although nomads in Mongolia use yurts all year round in temperatures as low as -35 and as high as +40 degrees Celsius, we recommend using yurts (gers) in temperatures between about -10 and +30 degrees Celsius as it takes special care and expertise to keep the interior of a yurt warm during conditions colder than -10 degrees Celsius.

A yurt provides not only the atmosphere of a nomadic lifestyle but has many practical and enjoyable uses for people in North America and elsewhere in the world.

A Mongolian ger (yurt) makes an ideal second or holiday home in part because it can be put to many uses. One of the pleasantest ways to make use of a yurt is as a pavilion in a backyard or another spot. The ease with which air circulates through a yurt makes it cool in summer and it can also be made warm when the temperatures begin to fall. You can use a smaller yurt as a bedroom and view the stars in the night sky through the opening in the roof. A yurt can just as easily be used as a kitchen or dining room or a combination of the two; you could even try cooking Mongolian-style barbecue in your Mongolian ger. A yurt can be used as a dining pavilion, a marquee for a family event, or as a playhouse for children.

A Mongolian yurt (ger) can also be used to provide space for a variety of activities for companies offering recreational services, and they will be a point of interest for patrons. As you may have seen in Mongolia, yurts are commonly used to provide bungalow-type accommodation at tourist camps in the countryside. Yurts are used not only as accommodation but also as restaurants, shops and museums in the land of their origin. If you are interested in using a yurt for a business such as pub and restaurant, we recommend our paint-decorated or carved yurts with 10 wall segments. An original Mongolian yurt with ten wall segments will contain approximately 20 restaurant tables with five seats each.

The Mongolian Ger:

  • Ingenious portable circular structure whose design dates back 1000's of years
  • Strong - lasts a lifetime
  • Easily assembled and disassembled
  • No permanent damage to the ground where it is built
  • Simple and sophisticated, beautiful as well as functional
  • Easy to heat and keep cool
  • Made from environmentally friendly materials
  • Secure, warm and comfortable
  • Self supporting - wooden skeleton uses tension and compression to maximize rigidity without nails or stakes
  • The experience of free living

is Adventure

A journey into the Mongolian  Altai Mountains in the Tavn Bogd National Park is an adventure you will never forget.  If you had only one adventure left in you, this is it.  You embark on a journey to a hidden, rarely seen world with nomads as your companions on an expedition of discovery through western Mongolia, along the border with China.  We trace the Tsagaan Gol  river, crossing broad valleys, mountain passes and lush tundra to the river’s ancient source – the massive  Potanin Glacier , which lies on the border of Mongolia, Russia, and China.  This spectacular area is so remote and so untouched, that it takes us two days to get to our starting point at Khoton Nuur lake.

Altai-Sayan Ecoregion

Sprawled across a mountain system lies a vast and pristine wild land — a distinct territory defined by natural processes, not political boundaries. Its borders are ecological, and its provinces are interconnected habitats. This is where the boundaries of  Russia, China  and  Mongolia  meet.

Tusker is one of a small handful of companies that trek the entire length of the  Altai Tavn Bogd National Park , which occupies the Mongolian part of the  Altai-Sayan Ecoregion , one of the planet’s most important strongholds of biodiversity, covering 386,000 square miles.

Great Lakes Basin

The  Khovd River , which in the glaciers of Mongolia’s Altai Mountains, flows into the  Great Lakes Basin , a depression with no outlet. There are lush wetlands that comprise the last great reed beds of central Asia.

The Altai Mountains  Tavn Bogd

  • Adventure through the hidden world of the nomads.
  • Trek across pristine river valleys, mountain passes, tundra and steppe.
  • Challenge yourself and ride like a nomad.
  • Feel the power of a mighty golden eagle on your arm.
  • Hike through 11,000 years of nomadic history.
  • Sleep beneath a vast canopy of stars.

The Challenge

If you could choose only one great adventure, it has to be Tusker’s Mongolia Nomad Trek.  Eddie and Amy Frank crafted this journey back in 2006 to fully immerse you in a hidden world, teeming with excitement, challenges and adventure.  And at the heart of your adventure are your guides and your crew.  Born and raised in the Altai mountains, they have been working with Eddie and Amy since 2006 and bring a lifetime of knowledge to fully challenge you on an adventure that will transform you for the rest of your life.

Just speak with EDDIE FRANK, Tusker’s owner and Mongolia head guide. He’ll give you an insider’s view that will plunge you headfirst into this life-changing experience.  Eddie has been leading Tusker’s expeditions for years and he leads our award-winning treks through the pristine Mongolian wilderness.  With Eddie you’ll  capture the magic of ancient nomadic life in Mongolia.

The Natural Beauty

If you were to talk with any Tusker adventurer from the MONGOLIA NOMAD TREK, they would tell you that this trip was a transformative experience. The challenge of hiking in a pristine world or riding a horse alongside the nomads is so revitalizing, that you’ll want to come back for more. And more than a few Tusker adventurers have done just that.  Exploring a wilderness area of 386,000 square miles, encompassing 3 mountain ranges and two of the largest river basins in the world, is enough true adventure for even the most demanding of travelers.

A Life-Changing Experience

You too can fire up your passion and feast on the excitement of a whole new challenge. It will transform you in ways you can only imagine and will empower you to accomplish things you never dreamed possible.

nomad travel mongolia

Embarking on a rugged trek on the ancient trail of the nomads does not mean sacrificing basic comforts during your journey. Your lodging and meals will provide you with more than just sustenance. Meals should thrill your taste buds and nourish your soul, fueling you for long days on the trail. That’s why we fly our head Kilimanjaro chef – ALEX MINJA – to Mongolia each year, to fire up your culinary passion on the adventure of your lifetime.  Your camp is a refuge from the day’s demanding hike and horse ride – a place to retreat and replenish your strength. It is also a haven where you can relax and recount your day’s adventures with your fellow trekkers, stoking the fires of friendship and togetherness. Eddie and Amy spent years redesigning and perfecting Tusker’s well-crafted signature expedition camp, to provide you with an experience like no other.

nomad travel mongolia

Evolution of the Mongolia Nomad Trek

When Eddie and Amy Frank scouted the 2006 Solar Eclipse trip, they traveled 3,000 miles through Mongolia and discovered one of the world’s last pristine wildernesses, inhabited by nomadic eagle hunters with some of the richest history on the planet. The Mongolia Nomad trek was born out of this scouting trip. They have since built the Mongolia Nomad Trek into one of Tusker’s most exciting, award winning treks, guided by the nomads in Mongolia’s Altai Tavn Bogd.

Eddie’s desire for adventure began when he was growing up in Africa. His father took him out into the bush and instilled in him the thrill of discovery. This excitement is what propelled him to set out to cross Africa in his army-surplus Land Rover in 1977. Since that first expedition he has crossed the Sahara 33 times, climbed Kilimanjaro on 54 occasions, and traveled through almost every African country overland.

Altai Tavn Bogd National Park

Glacial rivers flow from Mongolia’s highest peaks – the Altai Tavn Bogd – in the far west of the country. Traditional nomadic families live in  gers , nomadic tents, on the rocky slopes of the mountains in the park. The area we trek through is marked by massive peaks, and glacial river valleys where we camp every night. We travel on foot and on horseback, while Bactrian camels haul our gear. Silted rivers flow from the heavily glaciated mountains, the highest in Mongolia, bordering China and Russia at the Potanin Glacier, just a few yards from our final camp. We hike by ancient 11,000-year-old petroglyphs, giving us an exciting visual history of the area. Mongolian Kazakh eagle hunters are only found in this region of western Mongolia. They capture young Golden Eagles and use them for hunting, before returning them to the wild a few years later.

The Plant Life

The flora found on the Mongolia Nomad Trek is absolutely phenomenal. We schedule the trek during the summer, when most of the plant life is abundant, causing the vistas to explode in color. Wild spring onions also add a special quality to our delectable meals.

nomad travel mongolia

When Eddie and Amy Frank first landed in the western part of Mongolia to scout a solar eclipse trip, they were blown away by the beauty of the  Altai Mountains , on the border with China. They crafted a route which traverses the entire length of the seldom traveled  Altai Tavn Bogd National Park . You spend every night in Tusker Trail’s signature expedition camp within view of an extraordinary glacial lake or rushing river. On your final night you camp near the source of all this water, the Potanin Glacier, lying at the foot of Mongolia’s tallest peaks.

From the starting point of the trek at  Khoton Nuur Lake , you can ride a horse and also hike. It’s your call. We have found that once trekkers take Eddie’s practical riding lessons, they really enjoy the riding experience. There’s nothing like riding with the nomads, who have been traversing the central Asian steppe on horseback for almost three thousand years. After a lot of experience riding Mongolian horses, we have chosen to use Australian saddles, which we find to be the most secure, comfortable and best suited for the rugged terrain. Regardless of your riding skills, we’ll choose a horse that complements your ability.

Mongolia’s Trekking Seasons

In the Mongolian Altai, the summer is the best season to trek. The grasses are green, most flowers are in full bloom, and the snow has melted off the mountain pass we cross. Temperatures range from 28° F/-2 °C at higher elevations during the night to 90° F/32 °C in the day. We usually experience some rain showers and an occasional storm.

September and October are the cooler months in Mongolia. The weather is extremely variable with occasional snow in the north, which can occur towards the end of the season.

November to February are the winter months, and temperatures are well below freezing. In January and February, the temperature can get down to -30°C/-22°F and will not rise above freezing until April. There are a few strong winds, and the ground is covered in snow, but you often see days with clear weather and the shining sun.

Springtime starts in March and April with temperatures still below freezing. The days are dry and windy. After a long winter with harsh weather, livestock will be thin and there is usually great hardship among the nomads.

In Mongolia, a murderous winter decimates nomadic herds

Many steppe herders have lost all or part of their livestock in recent months, due to the early formation of a layer of ice and extreme cold, which has deprived the animals of food. For many, this disaster signals the end of nomadic life.

Frozen carcasses of dead animals, Sükhbaatar (Mongolia), March 17, 2024.

The steppe was finally free of ice and snow. White gave way to the still-dry yellow of early spring. But, on these empty expanses as far as the eye can see, patches of other colors could regularly be made out: brown, beige, black. Carcasses of horses, sheep and cows, among the more than 6.9 million animals that didn't make it through the harsh winter. Mongolians speak of a "white and iron" dzud (disaster): The snow fell suddenly at the beginning of November 2023, but a thaw melted it away. Then came the bitter cold, freezing an impenetrable layer of ice covered in deep snow from December to the end of March.

The nomads had no memory of every experiencing such temperatures, dropping below -40°C. They watched helplessly as their animals died one by one. Oyungerel Dolgsuren lost almost all of hers: Of the 400 animals she raised with her husband, Demberelsaihan, and their three children, only three sheep, around 30 goats and four cows survived. The 13 horses remaining from their 50-strong herd had wandered off into the cold and blizzard. There was no doubt they were now dead but the couple were looking for them all the same.

Every evening, the 46-year-old breeder thought back to what should have been done, if only they'd known: Sell all the animals in December. But by January, when the couple realized the scale of the disaster, it was already too late. It was impossible to cross the 40 kilometers of tracks to the small town of Munkhkhaan to sell the cattle. The herders were up to their hips in snow, and the yurt door had to be cleared to get out. In just a few minutes outside to fetch and feed the animals, Dolgsuren had frozen cheekbones. She was afraid for herself too. The animals could no longer feed themselves by scratching the ground; the ice was unbreakable, and they had grazed hooves from it. The family used up all the extra grain they had borrowed before the winter season, but nothing helped.

Pile of carcasses

Weakened, the animals succumbed to cold and hunger. While sick or old animals normally take a long time to die, said the nomad, here, they all died quickly. They laid down and never got up again. Every day, there were three or four, sometimes more, 20 all at once, one terrible morning. The family made the weakest animals sleep with them in the yurt, but they were already too far gone. Some females died of exhaustion during gestation or while giving birth. "We tried everything," repeated Dolgsuren.

She led the way around the modest shelter erected to keep the ever-chilly wind off the remaining animals. Another goat had died that morning in mid-April. Even though temperatures were now much milder, the most anemic animals would continue to die for a few more days or weeks. Like all the families in the region, Dolgsuren and her husband had assembled the carcasses into a pile. The environment office has requested that they be transported to marked pits, away from waterways and homes, to avoid disease when the heat returns. Trucks will have to be brought in to clear these hundreds of animals.
