Often we're asked if size affects price. The cost of a Norwegian cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest NCL ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary. To get a sense of pricing, please use our widget below.
Now on to sizing. To find your specific NCL ship, feel free to use our menu below. Clicking on any will let you quickly jump to that ship's stats.
First, a little clarification is needed before viewing our sizing chart. We're measuring Norwegian ships size using the metric, "Gross Tonnage." This always causes a bit of confusion amongst our community members. It's not simply "weight" that determines this size measurement. The definition is technical and boring, but we'll provide it anyway.
Are you still awake? Good. So why do we use this measurement to determine Norwegian Ships Size? As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, it's the standard across this cruise line and all others. Every passenger cruise ship will have this measurement . That makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, line and more.
Additionally, you'll find a number of other stats in our ship list. These include ship length, beam, draft, passenger count, and a few others.
Ok, we're done with today's maritime measurement course. Here's the good stuff.

The experience on these two ships will be completely different! On the newest Norwegian Escape, you'll be lucky to experience half of the venues on the ship. Norwegian Cruise Ships by Size, Age and Class (Updated 2022)
Norwegian Cruise Line has an active fleet of seventeen ships with a further two ships due in 2022-23 ( Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva ) plus, a further four more ships due between 2024-27.
The fleet is primarily based in the United States and sails frequently from the ports of Miami and Port Canaveral. However, they do also sail from New York.
Additional sailings take place throughout Europe, including Southampton.
In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet and how they compare to each other.
Introduction to Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line or NCL as it is more commonly known amongst cruisers started off back in 1966. However, it didn’t actually cruise from Norway originally!
It was founded by two men, Knut Kloster and perhaps more famously known now, Ted Arison (of Carnival Cruise Line ).
Their first vessel Sunward , a modified car ferry which also provided passenger services operated between the ports of Southampton and Gibraltar. It wasn’t long after that that Ted Arison left to found Carnival Cruise Line and Knut Kloster grew Norwegian Cruise Line to what it is today.
It wasn’t until 1971 that Norwegian Cruise Line had its first custom-built cruise ship, Starward delivered into service. Like the original Sunward the two ships also had car-carrying capacity, albeit via a well-concealed stern (rear) door system.
Fast forward to 2000 and NCL was sold to Star Cruises (a subsidiary of Genting Hong Kong) – this lasted until 2007 when Star Cruises sold 50% to an investment management company ( Apollo Management ) and then in 2013 the company reorganized again to become Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.
Since 2013, the company has acquired two further cruise brands ( Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ) and continues to grow the NCL fleet with several new builds announced for the current decade.
Norwegian Cruise Line Frequently Asked Questions
Is norwegian cruise line going to survive.
Whilst NCL has been one of the slowest to return to service (with Norwegian Getaway still not due back in service until November 2022) the cruise line has taken on additional debt to manage the day-to-day operations of the company and therefore it is more than likely to stay around!
What is the largest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?
Norwegian Encore is currently the largest NCL ship at 169,116 GRT and able to carry 3,998 passengers.
What is the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?
The smallest NCL ship is Norwegian Spirit at 75,904 GRT and able to carry 2,018 passengers – half of the largest ships in the fleet.
Which Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the newest?
Norwegian Prima will be the newest ship to join the fleet in August 2022.
Which Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the oldest?
Norwegian Spirit is the oldest ship in the fleet. Which entered service in 1998 and was last refurbished in 2020.
Is Norwegian Cruise Line owned by Royal Caribbean?
No. It is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. They also own luxury brands Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.
Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)
What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.
GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.
How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?
You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.
Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)
Are all norwegian cruise ships new builds.
Actually, NCL has possibly one of the most complicated fleets as a good majority of their ships are fairly old (compared to some of the other cruise lines).
Norwegian Sky for example was originally constructed as Costa Olympia , but was actually sold during construction to NCL and sailed as Pride of Aloha from 2004-2008.
Both Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn were both originally ordered for Star Cruises ( Superstar Libra and Superstar Scorpio respectively) but ended up being transferred to NCL before they launched.
Norwegian Spirit was built as SuperStar Leo for Star Cruises and sailed with them from 1998 until 2004 when she transferred to NCL and was renamed.
Norwegian Jade was previously named Pride of Hawaii for NCL America. She entered service in 2006 and was transferred to NCL, renamed and has been sailing for them since 2008.
Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)
Final thoughts.
Norwegian Cruise Line is a large cruise line in the industry, but has been overtaken by many others ( Carnival Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean to name just two) – however, NCL has been groundbreaking when it comes to bringing new ideas to the cruise industry.
They were the first to offer a more casual-relaxed dining approach, with any-time dining instead of the traditional two-set timed dining system that other lines previously (and still) use.
Thanks to the SS Norway (which NCL acquired in 1979 – then named France ), Norwegian rebuilt the liner as a cruise ship and added vast amounts of extra space for entertaining cruise passengers – something that set the boom in large cruise ships in the industry going.
These days, Norwegian is a very popular cruise line that still brings out a number of ‘firsts’ over other lines (such as Go-Karting at sea), and whilst their fleet is on the slightly older side, they will have some much newer and larger vessels being delivered over the next few years.

Enhanced Testing Protocol for Royal Caribbean Passengers
As a passenger aboard Royal Caribbean, I was taken by surprise upon learning about the newly implemented rule requiring tests for cruises of 5 nights or more departing from the US.
Now, all guests, including vaccinated individuals like myself, must take a PCR or antigen test within three days of sailing.
The goal is to provide an additional layer of protection as COVID cases continue to rise.
This change may impact the cost of testing and passengers’ decisions to go on cruises.
Let’s explore the details of Royal Caribbean’s enhanced testing protocol and its potential impact on our cruising experience.
- Royal Caribbean now requires COVID tests for all passengers on 5+ night cruises from the US, regardless of vaccination status, except for children under two years old.
- The new testing requirement aims to provide an additional layer of protection for all passengers and is expected to be followed by other cruise lines.
- CDC tracking shows that cases continue to be reported on cruise ships, with one-third of the tracked ships having yellow or orange status indicating possible cases.
- The testing requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers differ, with vaccinated passengers now requiring a test before boarding and unvaccinated passengers from Florida requiring multiple tests throughout the cruise.
Details of Royal Caribbean’s New Testing Requirement
I now have to take a COVID test within three days of sailing on a 5+ night Royal Caribbean cruise, regardless of my vaccination status. This new requirement has been implemented to ensure the safety of all passengers.
The cost of the test will be my responsibility, and it can be either a PCR or antigen test from an accredited provider. It’s important to adhere to the testing timeline and make sure the test is taken within the specified timeframe.
This requirement applies to all guests, except for children under two years old. By implementing this testing requirement, Royal Caribbean aims to provide an additional layer of protection for everyone on board.
It’s worth noting that the testing requirement may be subject to change based on public health recommendations.
Testing Protocol for Vaccinated Passengers
Vaccinated guests must now undergo testing before boarding the cruise ship. This is part of Royal Caribbean’s enhanced testing protocol to ensure the safety of all passengers. Here are some key points to know about the testing requirements for vaccinated guests:
Testing Protocol for Unvaccinated Passengers From Florida
The new testing requirement applies to unvaccinated passengers from Florida. It includes multiple tests throughout the cruise. As an unvaccinated passenger, I am now required to take several tests during my trip. This change aims to ensure the safety of all passengers on board.
The tests must be taken before the cruise, during embarkation, mid-cruise, and before disembarkation. These tests are necessary to monitor and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
It is important to note that the testing requirements for vaccinated passengers may differ and could potentially change based on the current COVID-19 situation.
As an unvaccinated passenger, I understand the importance of these tests in ensuring a safe cruising experience for everyone.
Importance of Universal Testing for Safer Cruising
Universal testing, regardless of vaccination status, helps ensure a safer cruising experience for everyone on board. Here are the advantages and safety measures of implementing universal testing on cruises:
Impact of the Testing Requirement on Passengers
As a traveler planning a cruise, I’m concerned about the potential impact of the new testing requirement on my overall experience.
The testing requirement, which applies to all passengers on 5+ night cruises, regardless of vaccination status, aims to provide an additional layer of protection for everyone onboard. However, it may be seen as a hindrance by some passengers.
The cost of the test is the responsibility of the passengers, and it must be taken within three days of sailing. The test can be a PCR or antigen test from an accredited provider.
This change in policy for vaccinated passengers comes as virus cases in the US rise sharply, and other cruise lines are expected to follow suit.
The testing requirement is subject to change based on public health recommendations, so it’s important to stay updated on any future changes.
Potential Future Changes to the Testing Protocol
I’m curious to know what changes might be made to the testing protocol in the future. As the situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to evolve, there is a possibility of potential changes and future adjustments to the current testing requirements for Royal Caribbean passengers.
Here are some potential changes to keep an eye on:
- Introduction of rapid testing options for quicker results
- Implementation of vaccine verification for easier boarding process
- Adjustment of the testing timeframe to ensure maximum accuracy
- Exploration of alternative testing methods to reduce costs for passengers
- Collaboration with local health authorities to establish standardized testing protocols
It is important to note that these potential changes are speculative and subject to public health recommendations. Royal Caribbean, along with other cruise lines, will continue to monitor the situation closely and make adjustments as needed to ensure the safety and well-being of their passengers.
Responsibility for the Cost of Testing
While the new testing requirement for Royal Caribbean passengers aims to ensure safer cruising, it raises questions about who pays for these tests and the potential financial burden on passengers.
The responsibility for the cost of testing falls on the passengers themselves, which can be a concern for some individuals. Affordability may become an issue, especially for families or individuals on a tight budget.
It is important to consider reimbursement options and insurance coverage to alleviate some of the financial strain. Passengers should check with their insurance providers to determine if COVID testing is covered and if there are any reimbursement options available.
Additionally, it would be wise for passengers to research testing providers that offer affordable options to lessen the financial impact.
Adjustments to the Testing Requirement Based on Public Health Recommendations
Based on public health recommendations, adjustments to the testing requirement may be made in the future. This means that the current testing protocol for Royal Caribbean passengers could potentially change.
Here are a few key points to consider regarding these adjustments:
It is important to stay informed about any updates or changes to the testing requirement, as they are subject to public health recommendations.
Are There Any Exceptions to the Testing Requirement for Passengers on 5+ Night Cruises?
Yes, there are exceptions to the testing requirement for passengers on 5+ night cruises. However, without the context of the Enhanced Testing Protocol for Royal Caribbean Passengers, I cannot provide further information on the exceptions or the testing protocol for shorter cruises.
What Type of COVID Tests Are Accepted by Royal Caribbean?
Royal Caribbean accepts both PCR and antigen tests from accredited providers as part of their COVID testing requirement. The type of test must be taken within three days of sailing and is applicable to all passengers.
How Frequently Are Unvaccinated Passengers From Florida Required to Be Tested Throughout the Cruise?
Unvaccinated passengers from Florida must be tested multiple times throughout the cruise, including pre-cruise, embarkation, mid-cruise, and pre-disembarkation tests. The testing frequency aims to ensure safety and may change based on public health recommendations.
Are There Any Plans to Change the Testing Requirements for Vaccinated Passengers in the Future?
Yes, there are potential plans to change the testing requirements for vaccinated passengers in the future. These changes would have an impact on the travel industry, ensuring safer cruising while considering public health recommendations.
Who Is Responsible for Covering the Cost of the COVID Tests?
Passengers are responsible for covering the cost of COVID tests. However, there may be testing exceptions for children under two years old.
Visiting Hawaii During a Volcano Eruption: Safety Tips
The thought of embarking on a journey to Hawaii has always been a dream of mine, but the idea of experiencing it during a volcanic eruption was something I could never have imagined.
However, with the recent increase in volcanic activity on the islands, it’s crucial to be well-informed and prepared.
Did you know that there are currently three active volcanoes in Hawaii?
In this article, I will provide you with essential safety tips for visiting Hawaii during a volcano eruption.
By following these guidelines, you can still enjoy your trip while ensuring your well-being in this unique and dynamic environment.
- Avoid the area of active eruption and follow instructions from authorities.
- Use gas masks and protective clothing due to poor air quality near the volcano.
- Some cruise ship lines have temporarily halted sailing to Port of Hilo.
- Explore unaffected areas of Hawaii and engage in water activities, visit cultural sites, museums, and local markets.
Safety Measures Near Active Eruption Zone
I should avoid the area of active eruption and use caution near the active eruption zone. When it comes to safety measures near an active eruption zone, it is crucial to follow the volcano evacuation procedures and stay informed about the volcano eruption prediction methods.
Volcanic eruptions can be unpredictable, and authorities rely on monitoring techniques such as seismographs and gas emissions measurements to predict eruptions. In the event of an eruption, it is important to evacuate to a safe distance from the volcano.
Volcanic ash, smoke, and gases can pose serious health risks, so it is essential to have gas masks and protective clothing. Additionally, it is crucial to use caution and follow instructions from authorities to ensure your safety in such a dangerous environment.
Impact on Cruise Ship Routes
Ships are being rerouted to other ports in the archipelago due to the impact on cruise ship routes caused by the volcano eruption. This has had a significant effect on tourism and has created an economic impact in the region.
Cruise ship lines have temporarily halted sailing to the Port of Hilo, forcing them to find alternative destinations. Ports on Maui, Oahu, Lanai, and others continue to operate normally, providing alternative options for tourists. However, Kailua-Kona, on the other side of the big island, remains active for cruise ships.
Despite the rerouting, passengers need not worry about visiting unaffected areas. The tourism industry is working hard to provide alternative activities and destinations for visitors to enjoy, ensuring that the economic impact is minimized as much as possible.
Alternative Activities and Destinations
Engage in water activities like snorkeling, surfing, and swimming to make the most of your vacation in Hawaii. Here are some alternative activities and destinations to consider:
With these alternative activities, you can still have a memorable and enjoyable vacation in Hawaii, even during a volcano eruption.
Monitoring and Updates From Authorities
Staying informed about the volcanic activity through official channels is crucial for planning activities and travel accordingly based on the latest information. The authorities provide regular updates on volcano activity, including any changes in safety recommendations or evacuation plans. It is important to monitor these updates to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Here are some key points to consider:
Overall Safety Assessment
Despite the ongoing volcanic activity, I feel confident in my decision to visit Hawaii.
It is important to understand the volcano eruption risks and take necessary tourist safety precautions. Although there are potential dangers associated with the eruption, overall safety can be ensured by following guidelines provided by authorities.
It is crucial to avoid the active eruption zone and stay informed about the volcanic activity through official channels. Monitoring air quality reports in different areas of the islands is also recommended.
By taking these precautions, visitors can still enjoy the many attractions and activities available in unaffected areas. Hawaii offers stunning topography, beautiful weather, and a laid-back style, along with water activities, cultural sites, museums, and local markets.
With proper planning and awareness, it is possible to have a memorable and enjoyable vacation in Hawaii during a volcano eruption.
Precautions for Visitors
I will ensure my well-being by following the necessary precautions and staying informed about the volcanic activity in Hawaii.
By adhering to these safety measures, visitors can enjoy their time in Hawaii while minimizing risks associated with the volcanic activity.
It is important to follow the guidelines provided by authorities and to adjust plans accordingly based on the latest information. Despite the active volcano, it is generally safe to visit Hawaii, as long as visitors take necessary precautions and avoid the active eruption zone.
Emergency Preparedness Guidelines
To ensure my well-being, I will familiarize myself with the emergency preparedness guidelines provided by authorities.
In the event of a volcano eruption, it is crucial to be prepared for a possible evacuation. Authorities recommend having emergency supplies readily available, including a first aid kit, non-perishable food, and water. Additionally, it is important to have a plan in place for evacuation routes and meeting points.
Stay informed about the situation through official channels and follow updates from local authorities. In case of evacuation, listen to instructions and follow them promptly. Remember to pack essential items such as medications, important documents, and a change of clothes.
How Long Is the Active Eruption Zone Expected to Remain Hazardous?
The active eruption zone is expected to remain hazardous for an unknown duration. Safety measures should be followed to avoid the area. Authorities provide updates on volcanic activity and safety recommendations.
Are There Any Specific Precautions for Visitors With Respiratory Conditions?
As a visitor with respiratory conditions, I take precautions in Hawaii. I wear a gas mask and protective clothing near the active eruption zone. I monitor air quality reports and follow safety guidelines from authorities.
Are There Any Restrictions on Hiking or Exploring Areas Near the Volcano?
When it comes to volcano hiking, it’s important to follow safety guidelines and restrictions set by authorities. Make sure to stay informed about the volcanic activity and plan your activities accordingly for a safe and enjoyable experience.
How Often Are Air Quality Reports Updated?
Air quality reports in Hawaii are updated frequently to provide the latest information on the volcanic eruption. It is crucial to stay informed and monitor these updates for your safety and well-being.
Are There Any Evacuation Plans in Place for Visitors in Case of a Major Eruption?
Yes, there are evacuation plans in place for visitors in case of a major eruption. Visitor safety is a top priority, and authorities have protocols to ensure the safe evacuation of tourists if necessary.

This major cruise line operator just announced its biggest ship order ever
One of the world’s leading cruise operators unveiled its biggest ship order ever on Monday.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. will take delivery of eight ships between 2026 and 2036 across its three brands.
Norwegian Cruise Line will welcome four ships in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, each with a capacity of close to 5,000 guests. The additions are subject to financing.
The vessels will follow the line’s previously announced Prima-Plus class vessels.
The upscale Oceania Cruises will take delivery of two 1,450-guest ships in 2027 and 2029, and luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises will add two ships in 2026 and 2029, each accommodating 850 passengers.
"This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” Harry Sommer, the company’s president and CEO, said in a news release . “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”
Specifics about the ships’ accommodations and amenities will be announced “in the coming months,” according to the release.
The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. The pier will be able to accommodate two large ships at once.

Norwegian Cruise Line ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list
Are you looking for the most megaresort-like, activity-packed Norwegian Cruise Line ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships.
The biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are, almost by definition, the Norwegian Cruise Line ships with the most "stuff" — the most pools, waterslides and other deck-top attractions ( even go-kart tracks ), as well as the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms. They have the biggest spas and casinos among vessels in the Norwegian fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in suite and cabin types.
With room for 4,000 or more passengers, the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are among the most massive resorts you'll find at sea from any cruise line and are comparable to some of the biggest resorts on land, too. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Norwegian Cruise Line ships for you.
For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Still, Norwegian Cruise Line doesn't just operate giant vessels. The world's fourth-biggest cruise line also has quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or so people and provide a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just half the size of Norwegian Cruise Line's biggest ships. These are vessels that, notably, have fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest Norwegian cruise ships.
The smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are best for vacationers who like a less crowded, more intimate resort experience.

What is the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?
The biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the 4-year-old Norwegian Encore . While not quite as big as the biggest ships from rival lines Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line , Norwegian Encore is still firmly in the pantheon of the world's cruising giants.
At 169,116 tons, Norwegian Encore is bigger than all but 21 other cruise ships in the world, 15 of which are operated by the three lines mentioned above. It regularly sails with more than 4,000 passengers on board.
The biggest of four vessels in Norwegian's Breakaway Plus class of ships, Norwegian Encore is the Norwegian ship most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. It's home to one of the biggest go-kart tracks on a cruise ship, the biggest laser tag area on a Norwegian ship and an unusually large virtual reality zone called Galaxy Pavilion, to name a few of its biggest attractions. There's also plenty of room to spare for multiple pools, waterslides and a kiddie splash zone.
Additionally, Norwegian Encore offers big-name shows in big, state-of-the-art theaters; a sprawling spa; a casino that fills half a deck; a dedicated children's play zone; and more than 2,000 rooms.
What is the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?
The smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship is Norwegian Spirit. At 75,904 gross tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of Norwegian Encore, the line's biggest ship. It carries just 1,966 passengers — more than 2,000 fewer than Norwegian Encore.
Unveiled in 1998, Norwegian Spirit is not only the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship but also the oldest ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. At 25 years old, it's likely to be phased out of the Norwegian fleet in the coming years.
Norwegian Spirit, notably, was not built for Norwegian Cruise Line but for Asia-based Star Cruises. Its original name was SuperStar Leo. It was transferred to Norwegian and renamed in 2004.
In part because of its smaller size, Norwegian Spirit offers fewer venues and attractions than newer Norwegian vessels, but it still offers a lot. In all, you'll find 13 food outlets on Norwegian Spirit, including two main restaurants, a casual buffet eatery, and versions of the line's signature Cagney's Steakhouse and French eatery Le Bistro. There are more than half a dozen bars and cafes.
Deck-top attractions on Norwegian Spirit include several pools, whirlpools, waterslides, a basketball court and a jogging track. The ship also has a casino, spa, nightclub and theater.
Are bigger Norwegian Cruise Line ships coming?
The answer isn't clear. Norwegian Cruise Line currently has four new cruise ships on order, and all were originally designed to be smaller than the biggest Norwegian ships currently at sea. However, Norwegian recently announced that some of the ships will be redesigned to be as much as 20% bigger .
Depending on how much bigger Norwegian makes these ships, they might become the biggest ships in the Norwegian fleet.
The four ships on order for Norwegian are all sister vessels to the recently unveiled Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, which are tied as Norwegian's eighth biggest ships. The first of the four additional ships on order, Norwegian Aqua , is scheduled to begin sailing in April 2025, with the three other new vessels arriving between 2026 and 2028.

The four new ships are all part of what Norwegian is calling the Prima Class of ships. The first two ships in the series, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, measure 143,535 gross tons a piece, which is about 15% smaller than Norwegian Encore, Norwegian's biggest ship.
The last four ships in the series, as noted, are being redesigned to be bigger than the first two ships in the series.
Norwegian executives said the smaller size of the new Prima Class ships would give the line more options in designing itineraries, as the vessels would be able to access smaller ports around the world than some of the bigger Norwegian ships can.
What's the difference between bigger and smaller Norwegian Cruise Line ships?
To put it simply: The biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels.
On Norwegian's giant Breakaway Plus Class vessels (Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape), for instance, you'll find multiple pools, waterslides, a kiddie splash zone and — on most of the ships — a sprawling go-kart racing track. Each of the vessels also offers Broadway shows in giant theaters; sprawling spas; large casinos; expansive children's play zones; and more than 2,000 rooms.
Additionally, two of the biggest ships in the series, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, have what may be the largest and coolest gaming and virtual reality zones at sea.

Norwegian's smaller ships, by contrast, lack many of the above features. Because of their smaller size, they have a much more intimate feel, at least when compared to the biggest cruise ships at Norwegian and other mass-market lines, and they hold far fewer people. While Breakaway Plus Class ships can hold around 4,000 passengers, based on double occupancy, the line's smallest vessels are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.
Norwegian's smallest ships are a good choice for vacationers who aren't eager to travel with the huge crowds that are common on the world's biggest cruise ships. They appeal to a subset of Norwegian fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Additionally, because of their size, the smallest ships at Norwegian are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Norwegian Encore.

Norwegian cruise orders eight new ships, biggest order in its history.
By Doyinsola Oladipo
NEW YORK, April 8 (Reuters) - Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has placed the largest ship order in its history to meet the growing demand for cruise travel, the cruise operator said on Monday.
The company will order eight new ships across the company's three brands, scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2036, executives told Reuters, without giving a price for the ships.
Norwegian Cruise Line made its announcement after stock trading closed. Its shares closed at $19.39, up 2.65%.
The cruise industry represents 1.5% to 2% of the overall vacation market so there is room for growth, Norwegian CEO Harry Sommer told Reuters.
"This is the most comprehensive look to the future that the company has ever done," Sommer said. "It demonstrates our optimism about the future of this industry."
Sommer said the new ship orders will not materially increase capital expenditure requirements.
Norwegian said the new ships will enable the company to grow passenger capacity by 6% a year through 2028 and 4% annually through 2036.
"We can grow and deliver these outsized returns on dividend free cash flow while at the same time not impacting at all our leverage for the foreseeable future," Sommer said.
The company had total net debt of $13.7 billion at the end of 2023.
The company said the ships are slightly more expensive than ships delivered in 2022 given inflation. Norwegian also plans to develop a new pier on its private island in the Bahamas, set to be completed by late 2025, with an investment of $150 million.
The company said the pier will allow it to carry 50% more guests to the region annually. (Reporting by Doyinsola Oladipo in New York; Editing by David Gregorio)
8 new ships coming to Norwegian Cruise Line, sister brands plus dock at Great Stirrup Cay
O RLANDO, Fla. — The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.
The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.
The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.
And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.
“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”
No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.
The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.
In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.
“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Royal Caribbean's newest ship is also its priciest. Here's what it's like spending as little as possible, with no lobster or other upgrades.
- Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas could be an expensive vacation compared to other cruise ships.
- Sailing on the mega-ship without paying for any of its upcharged amenities is possible.
- But it would mean spending at least $265 a day, staying sober, and repeating meals.
A budget vacation on Royal Caribbean's new wildly popular Icon of the Seas is possible. Just be prepared to stay sober, repeat meals, and pay at least $265 a day.
Right now, there's likely no better example of the mass-market cruise industry's shift toward the budget airline strategy — charge a cheap base fare and offer irresistible up-charged amenities — than Royal Caribbean's new world's largest cruise liner.
After all, what other ship comes with a $100,000-a-week cabin and a $200-per-person restaurant?
But it is possible to vacation on the mega-ship without giving into any of its upcharged restaurants and activities. If you're strong enough to do so, here's what your seven nights on Icon of the Seas could look like.
Be warned: It won't include lobsters or private lounges .
Less than half of Icon’s 28 eateries are complimentary, so you’ll likely repeat meals.
Picky eaters are sure to find at least one satisfactory option at the ship's three buffets, one of which is Mexican-themed.
If not, the complimentary pizza shop or sandwiches from the two on-board cafés might suffice.
In search of variety, grab a Mediterranean-style wrap or crepe at the five-stall food hall instead.
For a more formal dinner, budget cruisers can grub on a three-course meal at the complimentary dining room.
The three-floor restaurant has a rotating menu with classics like crab cakes, New York strip steak, and cheesecake.
Just don't expect lobster or filet mignon. Both cost extra.
For better or worse, guests snubbing upcharged options would also be snubbing booze.
Like most mass-market cruise ships, Icon of the Seas' 18 bars aren't free. If you want alcohol and sodas, be prepared to pay for a beverage package.
Thankfully, the ship’s complimentary amenities could distract you from your sobriety.
Icon's surf simulator and impressive six-slide waterpark won't run you a tab.
The same goes for its seven pools and nine hot tubs — save for one of each exclusive to guests who've booked a suite.
For drier activities, families could spend their afternoons scaling the rock climbing wall or testing their putt at the nine-hole mini-golf course.
Or they could work off their lunch buffet by sweating it out at the sports court — basketball and ping pong included — for no extra charges.
Fortunately, Icon of the Seas' nighttime entertainment is also a great equalizer. Its ice skating performance, rendition of the Broadway hit "Wizard of Oz," and multi-disciplinary dance, swim, and dive show are complimentary to all guests.
But if you want to test your fear of heights at the part-walking, part-agility, part-ziplining Crown's Edge , you'll have to cough up $49.
The arcade games aren't free, either.
Guests staying in suites have access to a shared outdoor lounge.
There's also the option to pay up to $700 for one day with a private cabana-like "casita."
But if you're on a budget, you'll have to fight "pool chair hogs" for the best poolside seating instead. (Consider bringing a sheet mask with you — a 25-minute facial at the ship's spa is almost $150.)
And hold off on your Instagram photo dumps until after your vacation.
Otherwise, you'll have to cough up $31 per day and device for streaming-enabled WiFi, totaling $217 for the duration of the cruise. (Icon of the Seas is exclusively operating seven-night sailings.)
But let’s face it: The base fare alone isn’t ultra-affordable compared to other cruise ships.
Patrick Scholes, a lodging and leisure research analyst at Truist Securities, told Business Insider in late 2023, three months before Icon's launch , that the vessel was priced at a premium of "at least 50%, if not more."
Steep, compared to the typical 20% to 50% new-ship premiums.
The cheapest interior stateroom for 2024 currently costs $265 per person per day.
But even the windowless cabin comes with its own list of upgrades.
Travelers who want to pick their own stateroom must pay an additional $128 per person. If they opt for one of the larger (by at least one square foot) interior cabins, it'll be an extra $100.
Which is to say, good luck avoiding any of the upcharged amenities on your Icon of the Seas vacation .
