Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher announces 'Definitely Maybe' album tour

oasis tour 2023 usa

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is going on tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the British rock band's 1994 debut album, "Definitely Maybe," the lead vocalist announced in a statement released on Instagram Monday.

"I'm bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe tour," read the statement. "The most important album of the '90s bar none. I wouldn't be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let's celebrate together."

The monthlong tour around the United Kingdom kicks off in Sheffield, England, in June 2024.

The tour will include performances of the tracks "Whatever," "Fade Away," "Listen Up," and "Sad Song." Gallagher made no mention of performing "Wonderwall," the group's biggest hit, which appeared on the band's second studio album, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" released in 1995.

USA TODAY has reached out to the band's representatives for comment.

Oasis unexpectedly disbanded in 2009, when Gallagher's brother, Noel Gallagher , chief songwriter and lead guitarist, left the group. Noel Gallagher went on to form his own group, Gallagher's High Flying Birds, while the remaining members of Oasis briefly continued as Beady Eye.

Until now, the band has denied ever reuniting .

The reunion could include Noel Gallagher and co-founding band member, guitarist Paul Arthurs. Arthurs, stage name Bonehead, began touring with Liam Gallagher again earlier this year after a battle with tonsil cancer.

However, on Live Nation, where tickets for the tour go on sale Friday, Liam Gallagher is listed as the performer, not Oasis.

It is unclear whether other previous band members, including Paul McGuigan, Tony McCarroll, Alan White, Gem Archer, Andy Bell and, most recently, Zak Starkey and Chris Sharrock, would return.

This summer, Noel Gallagher was asked at a live Q&A who would be on a hypothetical reunion tour.

"So me, Liam. Well, it's a funny thing because we're all at a certain age now," he said. "Hair was a thing in Oasis, so we'll have to see what everybody's hair is looking like. I'm in no matter what."

How to get Oasis tour tickets

Fans who find themselves in the United Kingdom next year can get tickets for the "Definitely Maybe" anniversary tour at 4 a.m. ET Friday.

Tickets are available on Live Nation at livenation.co.uk , which lists Liam Gallagher as the performer, across 12 dates in Sheffield, England; Cardiff, Wales; London; Manchester, England; and Glasgow, Scotland. Tickets for the Dublin dates are available at Ticketmaster at ticketmaster.ie .

“When I was growing up in poverty and unemployment, music took me out of that. Top Of The Pops on TV transformed your Thursday night into this fantasy world, and that’s what I think music should be. I want my music to be elevating and transforming in some way.”

Liam Gallagher Announces Summer 2024 Tour Where He Will Perform Oasis' Debut Album 'Definitely Maybe'

The former Oasis singer will perform the album in full in honor of its 30th anniversary

Liam Gallagher will definitely be bringing back an old favorite.

In an Instagram post , the British singer-songwriter, 51, announced the Definitely Maybe 30 Years Tour — a small 2024 string of shows where Gallagher will perform Oasis' former band’s debut LP, Definitely Maybe .

"I'm bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe Tour. The most important album of the ‘90s bar none. I wouldn't be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together LG x," he wrote alongside a tour poster.

The tour is set to launch June 2 in Sheffield and will run through June 27, where it concludes in Manchester.

Liam will also be visiting cities including London, Dublin and Glasgow, Scotland, along the way.

In the post, he revealed that tickets for the tour will go on sale Oct. 20 on Friday, 9 a.m. BST.

Next year's tour will be the first time the "Wall of Glass" musician performed Definitely Maybe since the band split in 2009.

Definitely Maybe , which was released in 1994, solidified Oasis as one of Britpop's biggest stars, producing longtime favorite tracks like "Supersonic," "Live Forever" and "Slide Away.

At the time, it was the fastest-selling debut album in the U.K. ever, and it sold 8.5 million copies worldwide.

Though it seems unlikely Liam's brother and Oasis bandmate Noel will be joining him for any of the dates, but in May, Noel, 56, spoke with SPIN about the prospect of performing the band's debut album.

“If Liam wants to do the show, great. He’s got to make a living and all of that,” he told the outlet. “Keep the flame alive. It’s not something I particularly would be able to put my heart and soul into.”

As Liam told fans who inquired about Noel on X Tuesday, "He’s been asked and he’s refused."

In As Close To An Oasis Reunion As We’re Likely To Get, Liam Gallagher Is Celebrating The Band’s Debut With An Anniversary Tour

Derrick Rossignol

For years now, Oasis fans have been clamoring for the band to reunite, but given the ever-present tension between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher , a comeback doesn’t necessarily seem likely. Perhaps the next best thing is coming soon, though: Today (October 15), Liam announced that he’s celebrating the 30th anniversary of Definitely Maybe , Oasis’ 1994 debut album, by taking it on tour.

The tour runs throughout June 2024 and includes shows in the UK and Ireland. Dates for the US and other countries have not been announced. Gallagher says he’s performing the album in full, along with “select B-sides from the era.”

It doesn’t appear that Noel will be involved with the tour, but as The Guardian notes , co-founding Oasis member Paul Arthurs (also known as Bonehead) will likely join, as he tours as part of Liam’s band.

Watch the trailer for the tour above and check out the tour dates below. Find more information about tickets here .

‘We live in an age where no band is allowed to leave the stage without an encore’ … (L-R) Liam and Noel Gallagher.

Will an Oasis reunion finally happen – and do we really need it?

Recent proclamations by the Gallagher brothers have convinced some that re-forming is no longer unthinkable. Here we present the case for and against

C rashing into our collective consciousness once again, as inexorable as the tides and almost as frequent, is the suggestion of an Oasis reunion. Liam Gallagher has been unusually generous about his brother’s new single Dead to the World, saying “how can such a mean spirited little man write such a beautiful song” – an improvement on comparing his music to that of arch-nemeses Blur – while Noel has said of a reunion: “He’s got my number. He’s got my manager’s number. Call us … Stop talking on the fucking internet and let’s see what you’ve got to say.”

UN diplomats might have advised more dovish phrasing yet, but by the Gallaghers’ standards they’ve each left a teddy holding some roses on the other’s doorstep. Compare with 2020, when Noel said: “I’ve often thought, ‘Let’s just do a gig.’ But I realised I would only be doing it to shut this fucking idiot up. The only other thing I could come up with was burning his house down or smashing his car in.” Or with 2016, when Liam posted a picture of Noel with the caption “potato”, and then wrote “Fuck Oasis” in block capitals.

By this point, whether Oasis will re-form or not has become as central to the nation’s pop-cultural psyche as who the next Bond will be; were they to reunite, it would not only make both men a staggering amount of money, but potentially make a terrific third act in Britain’s greatest will-they-won’t-they since Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. As Matty Healy of the 1975 put it last month: “What are Oasis doing? Can you imagine being in potentially – right now, still – the coolest band in the world, and not doing it because you’re in a mard with your brother?”

Like many brothers, they’ve always been at each other’s throats, but in Oasis this was tempered with affection: the most powerful moment of their Knebworth documentary comes during the gig, when they look at each other delightedly, revelling in what they’ve made. Even committed fans of each brother’s solo work since Oasis split in 2009 would admit that their partnership was in cosmic equilibrium: Liam’s attitude is rootless without Noel’s melodies, which in turn need Liam’s catalytic spark.

Not only could it make musical sense, but the bromance would be tied up with a bow. The enmity between Liam and Noel’s then-wife Sara MacDonald seemed to deepen the brothers’ division: “potato” jibes gave way to real nastiness, with Liam saying he didn’t care if Noel and his children were abused online, and Sara responding: “Please god have dropped dead by the time my kids are on social media.” Liam also said Noel was “rite up for [an Oasis reunion] but you know who won’t let him as she doesn’t like Oasis music”. Noel and MacDonald announced they were divorcing earlier this year, and were this a Hollywood movie of brotherly rock stardom, scriptwriters would have him return to Liam to rediscover who he truly is and always had been. Cue another Knebworth gig and run credits. Or would this be too tidy an ending for a band whose fractiousness is part of the appeal? Two of our writers ponder the consequences.

‘It’s not perverse to suggest they’re better apart’

‘Noel and Liam constantly sniping at each other feels more Oasis-ish than patching up their differences’ … Oasis in 2008.

We live in an age when no band is allowed to leave the stage without an encore: after 25 years of re-formations, reunion tours and classic-albums-played-in-full shows, it’s probably quicker to list the legendary bands that haven’t got back together than those that have. Thus the scant handful of holdouts – of bands who could theoretically re-form, but for whatever reason haven’t – have succeeded in bolstering their mystique by the simple expedient of doing nothing: in an age of rock and pop music obsessed with relatability, they seem more distant. Their careers are literally the stuff of legend.

So it is with Oasis. By the time they split up in 2009, they had been subject to diminishing artistic returns for more than 10 years, grimly punting out albums so mediocre it made you wonder if they’d ever been any good in the first place – or if the excitement they had engendered in the mid-90s had been a form of collective hysteria, a dry run for the madness that appeared to grip Britain in the wake of Princess Diana’s death. The intervening decades have burnished their myth, the distance enabling you to see their career more clearly: it’s easier to say that the first two Oasis albums, and the songs they relegated to B-sides in the same era, are largely fantastic, without the shadow of what the band would become – a byword for hoary, unadventurous musical toil – hanging over it. Uniquely among their Britpop peers, Oasis’s best songs seem to have cut through to a generation too young to remember them first-hand: look on TikTok and there’s umpteen videos soundtracked by Wonderwall and Stand By Me.

All of which you might take as reasons to re-form, but it’s more than just wilful perversity to suggest it’s somehow better if they remain unreconciled: Noel and Liam constantly sniping at each other feels more Oasis-ish , or at least more redolent of their golden era, than patching up their differences and acquiescing to public demand. The brothers’ volatility, the thrilling sense that the band could – and indeed frequently did – fall apart in a burst of fraternal violence was intrinsic to their initial appeal. Their inability to smooth over their differences in public marked them out as different, and anyone who had grown up with a sibling could recognise themselves in the interminable, cyclical, needling row that erupted in front of an NME journalist in 1994 – “shurrup, you dick!” – and was later released as the Wibbling Rivalry single. The Oasis who doggedly trudged on, because that’s what their fans wanted, or because they could coin it in on tour, or because they couldn’t think of anything better to do – precisely the reasons bands re-form – were no fun at all. Alexis Petridis

‘Seeing the Knebworth film made me rage with jealousy’

‘There’s something totally pure about hearing 250,000 people joyfully scream along to Cigarettes & Alcohol’ … Liam Gallagher performing at Knebworth, 1996.

There’s little I could say to argue for an Oasis reunion that wasn’t covered last month when Matty Healy, being interviewed by Canadian TV station CBC, went on a minute-long tangent about why the Gallaghers should reconcile, in which he concluded that “there is not one person” who’d rather listen to their solo material than the best of Oasis. Personally, there were parts of Liam’s 2022 album C’mon You Know I didn’t hate – I think it’s charming, at least, that he decided to work with leftfield producers like Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and Caroline Polachek collaborator Danny L Harle – and found it spine-tinglingly great when I saw him perform Oasis hits during a solo set a few years ago. Fundamentally, though, Healy is completely right: any solo effort from either Gallagher is bound to be a pale imitation of their original band. I’ve only gotten into Oasis relatively recently – I was 12 when they broke up in 2009 – so the entirety of my engagement with the band has been listening to their albums, watching old concert videos and keeping track of Liam and Noel’s endless feud.

I thought that hoping for an Oasis reunion was totally futile, so I haven’t held my breath to ever see them in my lifetime. Seeing the 2021 concert documentary Oasis: Knebworth 1996 , though, flicked a switch inside of me: watching the epic, stupidly grand show in a cinema with friends, buzzed after pre-gaming at a nearby Irish pub and sneaking in bags full of beers, I felt a deep, rageful jealousy build inside of me over the fact that I could only ever experience something like Knebworth in a cinema environment.

Part of it was the concert itself, sure, but just as much of it was the infectious vibe of Oasis’s wild, insouciant fanbase – despite all the lewdness and public drunkenness, there’s something totally pure about hearing 250,000 people joyfully scream along to Cigarettes & Alcohol or Some Might Say. I’m clearly not the only one totally won over by the wash of manic, euphoric vibes: Knebworth 1996 was the highest-grossing British documentary of 2021, and a live album of the show peaked at No 4 on the album charts. As a wise man once said: “Do me a favour – get back together, stop messing around.” Shaad D’Souza

Oasis 'set to reunite with string of gigs at iconic music venue'

It would be the first time brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher will have performed together since playing V Festival in August 2009 - and almost 30 years since they last played at the iconic estate

Oasis fans will soon have a lot to celebrate as reports suggest brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher are putting their differences aside, getting the band back together, and hitting the road.

The iconic Britpop band existed from 1991 until 2009 - breaking up when 55-year-old Noel and 50-year-old Liam dramatically fell out and decided to walk away from each other.

But now, after 14 years, the lads are said to be preparing to get back together for a string of headline dates at the iconic Knebworth House estate.

The band last performed there back in 1996 when they broke records at the time by performing to 250,000 fans over two nights.

And while Robbie Williams smashed that record in 2003 by playing to 375,000 over three nights, it is hinted Liam, Noel and their session players play a massive four-night concert in 2025. A source told The Sun on Sunday: “It’s very early days for the plan, and the proposed dates are a long way off. But if all members agree to do it, history will be made.

"Tickets would sell like hot cakes and fans would rejoice in seeing the band together again.

“It would be the perfect way for Oasis to come back together again and wouldn’t involve a tiresome touring schedule.”

The proposed dates are said to be in 2025 - which may seem far off, but will accommodate the fact both Liam and Noel are releasing solo material.

Earlier this year, Liam discussed his plans to record his fourth solo album, telling a fan on Twitter : “We’ll start sewing (sic) the seeds this year but it’ll be nxt year im taking most of the year of to find myself I’ve been bought a pair of sandals.”

While Noel is due to release a new album with his band, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, titled Council Skies in June.

Back in April, Noel told reporters that he did not expect Oasis to reunite any time soon - dismissing suggestions the team would reform to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Definitely Maybe, which was released in 1994.

He said: “In the Sony archives we’ve found tapes dating to those sessions. We thought they were lost, but they were mislabelled. They are wonderful versions of those songs, some acoustic versions.”

And while he said these ‘lost’ tapes would be released, he added: “There won’t be a tour, we won’t come back to play them together.”

However, last week chart rivals Blur announced they are reforming and frontman Damon Albarn says it’s only a matter of time before Oasis follow their lead.

He said: "They're brothers and it would be wonderful to see them reconcile."

While it was also reported that the star - who also fronts the alt-rock band Gorrilaz - had placed a bet that Oasis would reform, saying: "I can guarantee they're going to reform. In fact, I've put money on it."
