Full Review

The Fairview is Osprey’s travel backpack designed specifically for women, a female counterpoint to the Osprey Farpoint 40 . The two bags share many of the same features, and much of what we mention here echoes our review of the Farpoint. However, this is a women’s specific travel pack and a standalone product in its own right, so it deserves its own review.

Osprey Fairview 40 Side

Like the Farpoint, the Osprey Fairview comes in three capacities, 40L, 55L, and 70L. We tested the original 40L version for several months and continue to use that size in the updated design. We like that capacity because it fits many carry on specifications, depending on the airline you fly. After using it around town and during a trip to a hostel, how does it hold up? Let’s find out.

External Components

As of this writing, the latest version of the Fairview 40 comes in four colorways: Night Jungle Blue, Zircon Red, Winter Night Blue, and Black. Osprey does love a fancy name for its colors! We have to give Osprey credit; they didn’t fall into the trap of pink and purple for a women’s bag. The colors are extremely practical, too, as they won’t show much dirt, unlike lighter options. Indeed, these look just as good hiking up a mountain or sitting in a coffee shop.

Osprey Fairview 40 Detail

The entire exterior of the bag is durable, textured 450D recycled twist dobby polyester. It’s bluesign® approved—yay!—and coated with a PFAS-free durable water repellant to keep your gear dry.

Four loops are on the front of the bag: two atop the front stash pocket and two toward the bag’s bottom. You can use carabiners to attach small gear here since the loops at the top of the pocket, especially, are excellent for securing a travel water bottle since, otherwise, it can easily topple out—more on that later.

Two shoulder strap attachment points are better for clipping gear like hand sanitizer to keep it close at hand since there aren’t too many other quick-grab options available.

Osprey Fairview 40 Brand

While the loop on the left shoulder strap is elastic, the one on your right is a piece of fabric with “Osprey” stitched in white. There’s a larger Osprey name and logo on the front of the bag, and Fairview 40 runs vertically down the left side to let you know which bag you’ve got. The Osprey name is also scattered across the bag’s ITW hardware, including on the sizeable hip belt adjustment slides and the molded plastic zipper pulls. The hip belt buckle features the avian Osprey logo, as well.

Osprey Fairview 40 Zipper Pull

Speaking of zippers, Osprey uses YKK throughout the Fairview, so quality is assured. When it comes to clamshell bags like the Osprey Fairview, there are few more critical qualities than a good zip—luckily, this pack has big, chunky YKK No. 10 reverse coil closures! The main and laptop compartment zips are also lockable with a hole to slot a bag lock through for some added security.

Osprey Fairview 40 Compression

For extra good measure, the compression straps on the front of the bag secure fabric over the zips, making them invisible and impossible to open fully. They also, of course, help with compressing the bag. After all, if you’re only traveling for a couple of days or an uber-minimalist packer, you may not fill out all 40 liters of this bag every time. The webbing straps include sliding plastic strap keepers and can also hold the Farpoint | Fairview Daypack in place on the front of the pack. The Daypack is sold separately from the 40L version but comes with the 55L and 70L versions. Or, slide the top strap through the handle of your water bottle or the loop of a packable travel jacket to keep them from falling out of the front pocket.

Osprey Fairview 40 Carry Handle

While the Osprey Fairview is a travel backpack with shoulder straps, there are also two well-padded carry handles. The top handle is great for hanging on a hook, and the one on the left-hand side can work well for pulling the bag out of an overhead bin or trunk or carrying it like a briefcase. Breathable mesh will keep your palms from getting sweaty, and the padding is cushy enough that it doesn’t dig into your palms, so the only question will be how long you can carry about 20 pounds in one hand, not how comfortable the handle is if you need to do so.

Compared with the Farpoint, the shoulder straps on the Fairview are slightly narrower but just as padded. Most importantly, though, they are shaped differently. Instead of coming straight over your shoulders, these curve in and around, making it easier to carry. Several women on our team needed to lock the sternum straps on the Farpoint to keep them in place, even when the bag wasn’t overly heavy. The Fairview doesn’t have this issue. The way the straps curve around a women’s body help prevent them from slipping off.

Osprey Fairview 40 Strap

The Fairview also has sternum straps sliding along a rail on the shoulder straps so you can set them at the right height. They grip tightly to the rails, so it takes a little effort to move them. We don’t mind, though, since they stay in the right place and don’t require readjustment.

The hip belt on the Fairview is also shaped to fit many women’s bodies better—the curve is more pronounced, and the belt itself is shorter, sitting better under your rib cage and over your hip.

Osprey Fairview 40 Strap Pocket

It’s not just for stability, either. The left side of the hip belt includes a stretchy mesh pocket where you can tuck your wallet and passport to have it within easy reach as you go through security or snacks if you’ll be hauling your pack through the city or on a hike for hours at a time. It can also fit most regular size smartphones, though it can be a bit of a sqeeze. There’s another attachment loop on the right side of the hip belt, as well.

There are also two buckles above the attachment points on the shoulder straps. These allow you to buckle the optional Daypack to your front for a more balanced carry. They’re tucked under fabric shrouds, though, and so aren’t very noticeable if you don’t have the Daypack or plan to carry it that way.

Enough about the front, though—let’s talk about the AirScape® back panel. It’s a ridged foam covered in a breathable mesh for ventilation while the pack is close to your body. Combined with the LightWire frame and breathable mesh on the shoulder straps and hip belt, it makes the Fairview comfortable to carry for more extended periods, even when full.

Osprey Fairview 40 Airscape

There is more hardware back here, too, so let’s chat about them, shall we? Buckled straps partway down the shoulder straps clip into their counterparts hidden under the fabric on either side of the top carry handle for load lifters. At the other end, where the shoulder straps connect to the bag at the bottom, are webbing straps with adjustable slides. These connect to the yoke holding the shoulder straps. Tighten them to move the collar down the back panel, lifting the bag further up your torso, or loosen them to bring it to the top of the bag, lowering the pack on your torso.

Osprey Fairview 40 Harness

The mechanism is a game-changer for users with shorter torsos because while Osprey designed the pack with women in mind, there’s still a wide range of height between users, so we appreciate the amount of micro adjustment.

Something to note about all these straps: none but the front compression straps include keepers, so you’ll potentially have a lot of excess dangling if you need to cinch things up tightly. Not a deal breaker, just something to note. If that bugs you, look for a strap management system, like VELCRO Brand Cable Ties .

Osprey Fairview 40 Hide Harness

However, you won’t have to worry about catching the handle of your seatmate’s rolling luggage when you heave the Fairview into the overhead bin on the plane. One of our favorite things about this bag is the hideaway strap system. This function allows you to zip away both the shoulder straps and hip belt—which is perfect for when you’re stowing this bag away on a plane or train. The system is simple; unclip the load lifters, unravel the material at the bottom of the bag, and zip it up. At the top, you’ll see a spot where it says, “I.D.” On the underside of that location is a slot where you can slide in a luggage ID tag so someone can get your bag back to you without digging through your pack if it’s lost. When you want the harness system back, reroll the panel and tuck it away. The latest bag version does away with a hook-and-loop fastener to secure the roll, but we have not had a problem with it coming undone during use.

Osprey Fairview 40 Side By Side

While the Fairview 40 is not the chicest, most fashionable bag, Osprey markets it as a travel backpack, not a fashion statement. Throughout the months of testing the prior version and the weeks we’ve been using the current bag, we feel fine carrying it from the plane to the train to a hostel or Airbnb, though it will take up a bit of room sitting next to a cafe table if you stop for a bite to eat along the way. However, you’ll likely feel fine laying this thing down on the floor without worrying about scuffs and dirt since it’s built for the rigors of travel—we love that.

With its large capacity, this pack looks better full. It sags a bit when half empty, although the compression straps help. Whether it’s half empty or filled with all of the gear on our hostel packing list, it’s pretty comfortable to carry among different users thanks to the extreme adjustability of the harness system. Finding the right fit can take a bit of time since there are so many adjustment points, but we think the extra effort is worth it.

Additionally, we must mention that the large hip belt can get in the way when you’re putting on the Fairview. The hideaway panel zipper forces both sides of the belt into the center, so even if you try to hold one out to the side as you slip into the shoulder straps, there’s a decent chance of it falling back into the center before you get it in place. It’s not a huge deal, but it requires extra effort to pull out from behind your back if you’re slinging a fully loaded pack on, especially while wearing a puffer coat or sweatshirt.

Osprey Fairview 40 Walking

The easiest way to get the Fairview in place is to start with it on a table at waist height. You can slip into shoulder straps and buckle the sternum straps and hip belt before stepping away and accepting the weight of the backpack.

Inside The Pack

While the 40-liter capacity of the Fairview is mostly the main compartment, there are a few other places for gear.

Two mesh pockets on the front of the previous version have turned into one large stash pocket on the current version. It’s still big enough for a water bottle or two, and now you also have space for a packable jacket, subway schedule, or other gear you don’t want to pack inside the backpack. There’s a drainage hole at the bottom for excess moisture to seep out should something spill.

Osprey Fairview 40 Back Water Bottle

There are a few things to consider with this new iteration, though. Using a water bottle with a handle, like a Hydro Flask or a Nalgene , lets you lock it into place with the compression straps or via a carabiner to one of the attachment loops. If you don’t, you may fling it out of the pack as you swing it onto your shoulders (true story!). However, if you’re packing the Fairview for a long trip and have used every last inch of space in the main compartment, you’ll lose capacity in this front pocket and have to squish your packing cubes into a different place to squeeze in a water bottle.

Osprey Fairview 40 Keys

Atop the bag is a small compartment designed for easy access to your toiletry bag at airport security. However, it also includes a key clip and is the only small pocket on the pack, so it does double duty as a quick-access pocket. The nylon pocket hangs into the main compartment, so it can be tricky to get into when you stuff the bag with cubes full of clothing, shoes, and other gear. Because of this, the usable size of the pocket ends up being much smaller than it appears when the Fairview is empty.

Since a fabric flap obscures the zipper, you can tuck the zipper pull under it for added security and use it for your keys, phone, wallet, and passport. Slim gear such as this fits well here, although it can still be a squeeze to slide it in and out, depending on how much you pack.

A vertical zipper running next to the side carry handle on the left side of the backpack provides access to a large laptop compartment. While the prior version of the Fairview had the laptop area in the front of the bag, moving it to the back allows the weight of your device to be against your back for better weight distribution.

Osprey Fairview 40 Laptop

However, Osprey removed the admin panel adjacent to the laptop sleeve. While you can now slot up to a 16-inch device here instead of the previous 15-inch capacity, there’s no longer a mesh pocket for a tablet or travel tech. If you have a soft and flat tech pouch, you may be able to slide it above your computer; otherwise, there’s space in the main compartment.

The main compartment of the Osprey Fairview opens up fully, and you can fit a boatload of stuff in there. While it’s not necessary to use packing cubes with a clamshell design, we highly recommend using them to make the most of your space and give yourself some added organization.

The sides of the pack are flexible, so beware of stuffing too many cubes in here, or you’ll have a hard time zipping it back up. However, two compression straps within this main compartment can help hold everything together and make it easier to zip it back up.

Osprey Fairview 40 Inner Compression Strap

You’ll see the padded laptop sleeve along the bottom of the main compartment. While it seems like it takes up the pack’s entire back panel, it’s a separate sleeve held slightly higher than the bottom of the bag to protect your device from impact. On the right side of the sleeve, both corners include toggles that slide into loops inside the pack. They hold it to the bottom of the bag while also allowing you to pull it up if you want to hide travel itineraries, cash, or other flat gear here. Remember that you’ll have to unpack the backpack to access this space, so it’s best for the gear you don’t need to access often.

Osprey Fairview 40 Mesh Flap

You’ll find a large zipped mesh pocket on the other side of the main compartment against the front panel. It’s an open space with no organization, so use it to create segmentation from the rest of your gear. We use it for flip-flops, a beanie hat, gloves, an ultralight towel, and other items we’re packing just in case but are less likely to need, though you could also slide a slim tech kit or accessory pouch here if you can’t wedge it in with your cubes.

However, all of the space is combined, so packing more here means you have less depth in the main compartment and the front stash pocket. Everything has to play well together, so take some time to play around with the best way to pack the Osprey Fairview 40, and we think you’ll be happy to take it with you wherever you travel.

Osprey Fairview In Brussels

When we tested the original version of the Fairview for three months, it held up very well—no knicks, tears, or scuffs to report. However, we tested both the S/M and M/L versions of the previous Farpoint 40L for over a year and a half. After that time, we found some small tears in one of the bags, but nothing major. We’ll keep the usage timeline updated below so you can see how the newest version of the Fairview gets on in the future, but we have high hopes.

The differences between the Farpoint and Fairview are minimal at first glance, but when carrying this pack at full weight, you’ll notice a level of comfort that we think would be hard to achieve with the men’s version. Travel-conscious women don’t have to buy a bag designed specifically for women, however, carrying the Osprey Fairview was a pleasant surprise.

It’s not often you hear that a backpack saved a honeymoon!

Comfort plays a huge part in any backpack decision, but when Kate Tooley and her wife made it through a 2-week honeymoon across four countries without major back drama, she attributed that to the Osprey Fairview 40 backpack.

In fact, after nearly 2 years of use on trips both big and small, Kate continues to like, use, and recommend her Osprey Fairview 40L backpack for women travelers – especially those with petite frames and those traveling carry-on only (even on budget airlines).

Read on for more of Kate’s Osprey Fairview 40 review and why it could be the perfect backpack for your next adventure.

Osprey Fairview 40L Backpack

Why I Chose the Osprey Fairview 40L

When my best friend and I decided to go urban backpacking the summer after my first year of college, I spent a big piece of my limited budget on an Osprey pack. I’ve never regretted it.

However, budget airlines have changed travel drastically, and while planning my backpacking honeymoon, I realized the time had come to downsize . That’s how I found the Osprey Women’s Fairview 40L .

I specifically bought the XS/S in Misty Grey. It typically retails for $160, but you can get that down as much as 30% using eBags discounts. (Osprey is officially excluded from their sales, but it’s worth getting in touch with customer service via chat.)

[Editor’s note:  The XS/S version of this backpack is actually only 38L in size, but we will continue to refer to it by the 40L model name.]

osprey fairview 40l backpack review

I wanted to keep all the features I loved in my old Osprey Waypoint, but in a size that I could carry on budget airlines as well as small puddle jumpers in other countries without incurring a fee.

The must-haves were:

  • A quality frame and harness system: At 4’11” most clothing stores consider me a twelve year old boy, on top of which I have narrow shoulders, so finding a harness that fits and distributes weight evenly is both vital and challenging.
  • Suitcase style/front loading: When I’m city hopping (and sometimes hostel hopping within a city) being able to pack up/unpack quickly and efficiently means more time to see and do, and I find this style helps me stay organized.
  • Carry-on compatible: Standards vary, but after talking to friends I decided I wanted something under 22 inches and preferably closer to 20.

One note I’ve seen others mention online is that this bag is not as adjustable as some past versions. Knowing that, I’d be extra careful about measuring yourself before ordering or hit up a local outdoors store to do a fitting. The sizing for my small frame was a game changer.

The Best Backpacks for Slim & Petite Women

When you have a small frame, it's even more important to make sure your backpack fits comfortably. This article covers some of the best bags on the market targeted to petite women travelers.

The Best 40L Travel Backpacks for Women

When you're looking to travel carry-on only but not ready to travel uber-minimalist, a 40L backpack is the optimal size.

Choosing a Front-Loading Backpack

Panel-loading or front-loading backpacks offer the convenience of a backpack that opens like a suitcase. Read more about front-loading backpacks in this article.

Best Features

Durability + convenience.

On the durability and convenience front, the Fairview continues to shine. I’ve used it consistently and it’s yet to show any wear, living up to my expectations of the brand.

So far it’s survived subway, train, bus, air travel and even went through customs. The harness is easy to get in and out of, and the pack was light enough to quickly store in and retrieve from all kinds of overhead bins, sleek enough not to get stuck in those annoying bungeed bus shelves, and narrow enough to hold between your legs on the subway without too much “spreading.”

The Harness

The harness held up to long days of walking and the balance and suspension were excellent, even on steep, uneven or cobbled streets. (I’m looking at you, Bruges.) We were caught in a bad downpour in Brussels and never had any water leakage.

Because the harness is small and doesn’t have to attach to the top of the pack, folding the straps away is incredibly quick and easy: you can even do it standing in security without slowing down the line!

back panel of osprey fairview 40 backpack open and stowed

The Shoulder Strap

While I am a bit paranoid the shoulder strap is going to get caught in something (I usually wind it around the handle before stowing it), that fear has so far been unfounded.

It was the feature I didn’t know I was missing from my old bag, and has been a total game changer, making carrying this pack easy when you have those awkward middle distances to transport it (like when trying to get through the airport quickly).

Front Pocket + Laptop Sleeve

After using the bag for shorter domestic trips where I’ve been carrying my computer, I can see the value of the front organizational pocket. It’s easy to access your computer going through security, and the fact that the laptop sleeve keeps the computer from hitting the ground when the bag is set down is a real plus.

If you don’t travel with a laptop or tablet, see my notes in the downsides section below.

Little Features Worth Noting

The Fairview has lots of little features that are easy to overlook, but good to have:

  • interlocking zippers to keep your belongings secure
  • a scratch-free top pocket for sunglasses, etc.
  • compression straps in all the right places
  • super padded side-handle
  • deep mesh pockets on the front (great for water bottles and maps)

The top pocket also has a key hook, which I love, but makes it less ideal for sunglasses.

The Downsides

While it’s nice to have the option of a laptop pocket, if you don’t usually travel with a computer, the sleeve and massive zipper pocket become less than useful.

I’d have preferred either more small organizational pockets or an open space. That said, I roll my clothes and use packing cubes , so the laptop sleeve has been a great place to stash one or two nice flat-packed dress shirts.

I’ve used the zip pocket for paper tickets and maps, which worked somewhat, though everything does tend to sink to the bottom and bulge.

osprey fairview laptop sleeve and pocket

The Water Bottle Pockets

The inaccessible water bottle pockets are frustrating because not only are they impossible to reach without assistance (if you can do it, I applaud you and your octopus-like arms), they prevent the compression strap from working properly.

Additionally, they can cause your water bottle to pop out unexpectedly, but that’s a story for another day.

I’m not sure who thought “ooh olive green and turquoise, how pretty!” but they were wrong. (Pro tip, when Osprey says grey, it’s typically a very green-grey). Color-wise it’s one of the uglier bags I’ve owned, but the other option is a very bright forest green, which I didn’t like any better.

This being said, I do appreciate the light interior, which makes it easy to find things (no more lost black thongs or missing socks).

No Daypack Attachment

A previous commenter brought up a great point- there are no straps to attach a daypack to the back . You could probably rig something with the compression straps, but it’s not designed for that.

Editor’s Note: The buckles on the shoulder straps are attachment points that work with Osprey’s Daylite daypack if you want to carry an additional bag on the front.

For my honeymoon I took a small Fjallraven Kanken that I like both for its water resistance and comfort. There was no way to attach it, packed, to the Fairview and at times that was incredibly annoying. If it was empty I could shove it in the front pocket, but generally I just carried it rather than unpack between towns.

What I’d recommend, especially if you’re doing some hiking (which I wasn’t), is to get a completely “packable” daypack, like the Osprey Stuff Pack or the Sea to Summit Ultra Sil and not put anything significant in the large front pocket. You lose some capacity, but I think it would be relatively simple to drop a lightweight bag inside, even packed. Folded up, I bet it would even fit in those otherwise useless mesh pockets.

Fit and Comfort

I didn’t realize I’d spent years trying to compensate for a too-large harness frame until I tried on the Fairview and barely had to adjust anything. It distributes weight just as well as, if not better than, my old Osprey, but feels drastically less claustrophobic: think more camel, less turtle.

Osprey Fairview 40L in XS/S for petite

Even fully loaded this bag was fantastic. I tend to have shoulder and neck pain from packs, but this one allowed me to really put the weight on my hips. Don’t get me wrong, I could feel that I’d carried some weight on my back by the end of the day, but I was never in any pain.

Usually, my pack isn’t filled to capacity, and it feels more like carrying a heavy daypack. I can imagine that even on a longer trip with more distance walking it would be extremely comfortable. Carrying it with the shoulder strap is also surprisingly painless, and the strap is wide enough not to dig in. For anyone who wants a female designed pack but is a little taller, the Fairview also comes in a S/M size.

My wife is about 5’7” and has this bag in the S/M. She sometimes deals with severe lower back issues, but on our honeymoon she had virtually no pain even while carrying a fully loaded pack for extended periods of time.

One of our concerns for the trip was that her back would go out and she wouldn’t be able to walk. It never happened, so I guess you could say the bag saved our honeymoon.

Here’s a great picture of her with the bag packed out.

Osprey Fairview 40L in Small/Medium

Additionally, the non gender-specific Farpoint is essentially the same pack, but comes in even larger sizes (and less strange color combinations).

Size and Travel Logistics

I haven’t had any trouble with size on this bag in the US, Europe, or the UK, and I’ve yet to find an overhead bin it can’t squeeze inside. It even fit in the tester bins at the airport.

Do be careful about packing the front pocket out too far if you’re travelling on very small planes, it can really bulge out.

When I asked my wife if she had anything to contribute to the review, I received this text: “It’s just the right size for two weeks. Boom. Review done.”

I agree with her at least about the first part. For a mid season trip (think sweaters, light boots, and a puffy jacket) I didn’t need any extra space and was even able to stash one or two items I picked up during our travels.

Initially, I thought it would be too large for a long weekend. What I’m really enjoying about the bag, though, is how well it compresses down. Even if I don’t need to fully load it, it still keeps everything organized and doesn’t feel too large.

It helped me to not over-pack, but didn’t force me to leave necessities behind.

One other unexpected perk I’ve noticed is that this pack fits an average sized hostel locker, something I’ve encountered problems with when travelling with a larger bag. We were especially grateful for them when we stayed in a pod hotel in Amsterdam that had limited storage.

Overall Recommendation

The longer I use the Fairview, the more I appreciate its versatility and comfort.

Color and minor flaws aside, this is a well-constructed pack that has and continues to last. There are some design features I’d love for Osprey to take a second look at, but they’ve hit all the big marks for me.

I’m excited to have a pack designed for a small person that will carry what I need and keep my back in condition to keep exploring for years!

Thanks for the review! I’m 5-2″ and just bought the Farpoint because I just couldn’t handle the colors on the Farview. The forest green reminds me of my good ol’fashioned Kelty backpacking bag, and the misty grey looks like my great-uncle’s WWI button bag. (I’m not young.) I wanted something I could use for work travel and got the Farpoint in black. I let Osprey know if they came out with better colors I’d hand down my Farpoint to my son in favor of the Farview. (Wouldn’t grey with colorful contrast top-stitching be awesome? And of course the interior lining has to remain light-colored so you can find things.) Happy travels!

Thanks for reading Mary! Hope you’re enjoying your Farpoint; I’ve had the older model for years and while I’m finding the Fairview is distributing weight a little bit better, the Farpoint is sill a fantastic and super comfy pack. I wish all outdoor companies would put out black bags for both genders– not all women want funky colors!

Thank you so much for this review! I just got my new Fairview after traveling last week and realizing that not only had I completely overpacked my Timbuk2 Wingman, but I really needed something with a waist belt to help support the weight. Passing my Wingman on to my husband, and excited to travel again soon with my Fairview!

Thanks for giving it a read Sarah! A waist belt is such a game changer! I hope you fall in love with your Fairview once you get a chance to take it on the road!

Great Review! the locker info is very helpful. I think the smaller size is actually 38L, so you are doing even better than you thought on keeping it light.

I’ve purchased this bag but t doesn’t have the shoulder clips to attach a day bag! I wonder why?

June 17, 2019 at 3:28 pm

I’m not sure what the concept was on Osprey’s part; I think it should always at least be an option. That said, for me personally, when this bag is filled to capacity, I think adding something onto the back would put too much weight far away from my body. I opted for a small collapsible day pack that I could shove inside. Helped me even more with not being tempted to pick up extra stuff on the trip.

' src=

May 11, 2019 at 8:12 am

I read somewhere the extra day bag only comes with the larger versions of this bag (55 and 70? I think).

May 11, 2019 at 8:14 am

Great review with lots of details. Thank you. Sooo with you on the colour choice ! Yukky forest green or turquoise blue…!? What a choice 🙁 I’m thinking of doing what the other reader did and go for the male version in a nicer colour.

June 17, 2019 at 3:30 pm

You’re correct in the above comment. Only the larger sizes come with a day pack. I’ve finally become accustomed to the color (and I have to admit the light color inside makes it super easy to find things), but I’m still hoping Osprey starts making a black or grey option for both male and female packs. Thanks for reading!

Hi, I am looking for a 40 liter backpack for my trips, I am a woman with 5’3 “(about 163 cm) and weigh 132 pounds (about 60 kg). My problem with the Fairview 40 is that I do not like colors, but being I do not know if the Farpoint would fit well, since the smallest size is the S / M while the smallest size of the Fairview is the XS / S … Any help? Any alternative for less than 140 dollars ? I like the Farpoint 40 but maybe it’s too big for my height 5’3 “

Osprey Fairview 40 Review: The Best Travel Backpack for Women?

In the market for a new backpack? This Osprey Fairview 40 review will help you decide whether or not it’s the right backpack for you before you buy it.

Osprey Fairview 40 Review: The Best Travel Backpack for Women?

Searching for that perfect travel pack is a real challenge. And trust me—you’re not alone in this struggle.

If you’re a backpacker yourself, you know exactly what I’m talking about, because your backpack is more than just a bag. Whether it doesn’t feel right or lacks storage, it can make or break your trip if it isn’t a good fit.

Well, there’s good news for the female readers out there looking for that perfect bag. We’ve found one that we feel is a solid all-around choice for today’s backpacker.

The Osprey Fairview 40 is similar to Osprey’s best-selling bag, the Farpoint. But unlike the Farpoint, which is better suited for the male frame, the Fairview is designed specifically for women.

And at 40L, this is the perfect one-stop travel bag.

While the Osprey Fairview 40 does share a lot in common with the male version (you can read up on the Osprey Farpoint 40 Review to learn more), it does have a few specific features that make it different, largely the size.

Taller women are better off using the Farpoint because the Fairview only comes in Extra Small/Small and Small/Medium sizes.

This is because the Farpoint was the only option on the market before. It was the catch-all travel bag before Osprey released the Fairview.

That doesn’t mean the Fairview isn’t good though. For average height or shorter women, the Fairview is a solid choice.

But you’re here for the pros and cons of the Fairview, right? We’ve got you covered in this Osprey Fairview 40 review.

The Osprey Fairview 40 is for the woman who travels light, especially for anyone who is a laptop-based digital nomad without extra equipment like cameras!

  • Materials 5
  • Aesthetic 4
  • Organization 3
  • Carry-on compliant
  • Spacious given it's size
  • Highly adjustable
  • Lockable zippers
  • Dedicated laptop sleeve
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Lacking interior organization

Osprey Fairview 40 Review: Quick Answers

  • It’s a decent-sized backpack that is small enough to use as a carry on backpack.
  • This is a smaller version of the best-selling Farpoint line that’s made specifically for women.
  • Comes with all the main features you need plus a few nice extras.
  • Comfortable fit with high-tech suspension systems and stable shoulder straps and hip belts.
  • This robust and durable backpack comes with a lifetime warranty.

Who Is the Osprey Fairview 40 For?

  • Women under six feet tall.
  • Light packers.
  • Low budget travelers who want to save money on checked luggage fees.
  • People who aren’t planning on doing much hiking.
  • Digital nomads that live and die with their laptop.

Who Isn’t the Osprey Fairview 40 For?

  • Men or taller women.
  • Heavy packers (consider the Osprey Fairview 55 instead).
  • Digital nomads that carry a lot of equipment. Photographers and videographers should try a hiking camera backpack .
  • People who want to do a lot of hiking or trekking. This bag won’t hold all of your gear.

Osprey Backpacks: Who Are They?

Let’s talk about the company itself before we dive too deep into our Osprey Fairview 40 review. Osprey is one of my favorite brands. They’re backpacking professionals with an established reputation for quality items from top to bottom.

And with about 40 years’ worth of experience, they know a thing or two about backpacks, hiking, and the outdoors.

Osprey Backpack Mountain Hikers

Osprey is based in Cortez, Colorado. The company is surrounded by some of the most inspiring landscapes on earth! How could they not be inspired?

They are also passionate about making trekking and traveling accessible for pretty much everyone, so they have an incredible amount of sizes and styles.

I can’t think of many people who wouldn’t be able to find an Osprey product that didn’t suit them. Osprey has options for everyone because they know how to make travel accessible regardless of your budget. That’s what makes them one of the best backpack brands out there.

They also offer something they like to call the Almighty Guarantee. It’s a lifetime guarantee for all of their products, including the Osprey Fairview 40 line.

That means they’ll fix any issues with your pack, completely free of charge.

That same guarantee extends to all of their backpacks, regardless of age. So, you can rest easy knowing you’re in good hands.

Osprey Fairview 40 Features

What better way to start our Osprey Fairview review than by exploring everything it has to offer. This backpack isn’t the Cadillac of backpacks.

And that’s a good thing.

The Osprey Fairview 40 has the right amount of features. It will do everything you need it to do if you’re traveling light.

There’s something attractive about simplicity when it’s done right. Features are great, but some backpacks lose focus of the basics.

The ideal backpack should provide enough storage, durability, and fit right.

Let’s take a look at the main highlights of the Osprey Fairview 40.

Designed for Carry-On Travel

The number one point in this Osprey Fairview review is that this is one of the best carry-on backpacks on the market.

Carry on dimensions tend to vary between countries and airlines, but bags under 22 inches are usually the safest options.

This bag is closer to the 20-inch mark, so you can easily bring this with you when boarding a plane. You won’t have to worry about checking your bag and paying extra—even on European budget airlines, which are pickier when compared to US airlines.

Going to the airport and catching flights with your Osprey Fairview 40 is a breeze.

Perfectly Sized for Women

Fairview 40 for women in green

This Osprey Fairview review is for women because the company created this bag just for them.

Everyone wants a comfortable backpack. I’ve never met anyone that actively searched for an uncomfortable one.

Women often find it challenging to find a backpack that fits their frame comfortably while still providing enough storage.

Well, you don’t have to look far anymore. The primary difference between the Farpoint and this pack is the back-length measurement.

Look, I’ve traveled all over the world and this is the most important thing to look for when looking at backpacks. Even better: this backpack offers an extra small option that women under 5’4″ will absolutely love.

Are you looking for something a little bigger? You’re in luck.

Osprey initially sold the Farpoint bag as a unisex backpack. So, if you’re a little taller and want more space, the Farpoint is still a suitable alternative. You could also try the Fairview 55, which comes with a detachable daypack (hence the extra 15L).

Lightwire Frame Suspension System

Osprey Fairview's lightweight suspension system

The back panel does a great job of distributing the weight across the shoulders and hips.

Stowaway Harness and Hip-Belt

I love the Osprey Fairview 40 and Farpoint 40 for the stowaway harness and hip belt features. You can zip the whole harness system into the back panel, leaving you a duffel bag .

Osprey Fairview in green with stowaway straps

You can protect the more delicate parts of the bag (like the buckles) from getting damaged by baggage handlers who have made it their life goal to destroy all luggage.

Stowing away the straps and hip belt in busy areas is a bit of a hassle though. It definitely takes some fiddling around to get used to it. Other backpacks I’ve seen have a magnetic pouch that does a similar job to this. I think they’re easier to use when you’re rushing, but this is only a minor problem.

What about the build quality for the shoulder straps and hip belt on the Osprey Fairview 40? They are incredibly well-padded and lined with sweat-wicking material. This is a huge bonus to me, especially if you plan to hike.

The hip strap is also hiking grade. And even though this isn’t the best hiking bag, it does provide excellent hip support. That makes it a great choice for walking around cities and general traveling.

Sternum Strap with a Rescue Whistle

The Osprey Fairview 40 has a decent sternum strap. The strap actually looks a little flimsy, but it does a surprisingly good job of adding extra weight distribution across your chest.

This allows it to take some of the strain off of the shoulders and straps. It also comes with a rescue whistle, which is fantastic for solo female travelers who want some extra security.

Zip-Off Daypack

Fairview 70 with daypack

The Osprey Fairview 40 doesn’t have a zip-off daypack. But if you opt for the Fairview 55 , that one does. It’s essentially the same backpack as the 40L Fairview, but it comes with an extra 15L detachable daypack.

Having two bags in one is always an attractive idea, especially if you need flexibility while traveling. You can still carry the 55L on planes and use the daypack as your personal item.

It’s surprisingly spacious, and the laptop and tablet sleeves are found in this part of the bag too. That alone makes the daypack essential for digital nomads.

The daypack back panel tends to get a little sweatier than the back panel on the main part of the pack. I often found myself letting the bag hang off one shoulder in warmer or humid climates.

However, if the Osprey Fairview 40 is your preferred size, you can always check out our list of best travel daypacks for more options.

Suitcase-Style Access to Main Compartment

Suitcase-Style Access to the Osprey Fairview 40

This was another big draw for me. I hate digging around top-loading bags trying to find things. You know exactly what I’m talking about—rooting around at the bottom of your bag to find your phone charger isn’t fun.

However, this feature paired with the soft sides means that you sacrifice some stability in the backpack when it’s open. This doesn’t affect the bag at all when you’re wearing it, but it tends to spill out its contents all over the floor when you have it open. This can quickly create a mess if you’re not careful.

It can also make the bag hard to pack because things tend to bunch up on one side— unless you’re methodical with your packing.

The best solution to this is to invest in some packing cubes , so everything stays where it belongs.

Laptop and Tablet Sleeves

Osprey Fairview 40 laptop storage

The Osprey Fairview 40 has an anti-scratch pocket for your laptop and other devices. While the internal frame is super sturdy against your back, it creates a problem in that you can’t have the laptop sleeve against your back. So the Fairview 40 solved this problem by putting the laptop/tablet sleeve in the front .

Generally, the more cumbersome stuff should always go as close to your back as possible. Having the laptop at the front of the bag kinda throws off the weight distribution. However, if you have a lighter laptop like a Macbook Air, this isn’t really a problem.

Also note that the sleeve is only good for laptops up to 15 inches.

Dual Front Compression Straps

One downside of the Osprey Fairview 40 is that the front panel opening can get a little bulky and extend further out than your typical backpack. The compression straps help you to condense it a bit, so you don’t accidentally hit too many people in the face.

This bag does a reasonable job of making things a little smaller, and you can also fit a thin rain jacket under there for quick and easy access.

Good Security

The compression straps also add an extra layer of protection to the Osprey Fairview 40. They help hide the zippers, keeping your belongings safe from shady characters.

It also helps when you have a badly packed—or overpacked—bag and are running the risk of the bag unzipping itself. I’ve lived through this experience many times, and trust me—it’s not fun.

Lockable Sliders

I tend not to use locks on my bag because I’m bad at keeping track of keys and remembering combinations.

But the zip sliders on the Fairview 40 have a little loop that you can hook a padlock through if you do like the peace of mind of locking away your valuables. There’s nothing particularly innovative here given every bag I’ve ever owned has these, but it’s a useful addition.

Padded Top and Side Handles

Osprey Fairview padded handles

Dual Front Mesh Pockets

The Osprey Fairview 40 has two front mesh pockets. You can put a water bottle in there if you haven’t overfilled the pack. If you did overstuff it, getting your water bottle out is a bit tricky.

Zippered Stash Pocket

Osprey Fairview 40 zippered pocket with phone

I’m not entirely sure what you’re supposed to keep in here, but I often stash my keys or headphones here.

The ad shows someone storing their sunglasses here, and it’s definitely the perfect size for this, but I wouldn’t recommend this. That’s an easy way to crush your sunglasses.

When I’m walking around town or on a short nature walk, I often store my phone in here while listening to music, so I can stroll around hands-free.

Internal Front Flap Zippered Mesh Compartment

The zippered internal mesh pocket is the perfect place for storing the essentials you might need when you roll into a hostel late at night. I keep my underwear, socks, PJs, and toiletries in here.

The mesh design is a clever addition because the visibility helps you keep track of where everything is in that pocket without having to dig around and make a mess.

Internal Compression Straps

These are good to push your clothes down a little further if the external straps aren’t doing it for you.

They’re okay, but I still think you’re better off using packing cubes with the Osprey Fairview 40.

Osprey Fairview 40 Review: Pros and Cons

Overall, this is a fantastic bag. The pros of the Osprey Fairview 40 vastly outweigh the cons.

But there are some issues to look out for before investing in this as your next travel companion. And this wouldn’t be an exhaustive Osprey Fairview review without talking about the pros and cons.

And I know you came here to read the good and the bad.

  • Osprey made this backpack specifically for women’s backs. The main advantage of the Fairview is that its suitable for smaller women that are 5’5” and shorter. If you’re over this height, you’re not going to find much difference between this and the Small/Medium in the Farpoint range.
  • This bag’s compliant with global carry-on luggage standards. The bag is less than 22 inches, making it a safe choice for your carry-on.
  • It’s spacious on the inside. You can fit a surprising amount of stuff in this backpack given its size. Still, it’s not for heavy packers.
  • The stowaway feature of the Osprey Fairview 40 is excellent. This alone is sure to add many years to the lifetime of this backpack’s buckles. Most backpack damage occurs to the more delicate parts like the buckles, especially when they’re in transit.
  • This bag is reasonably secure. The lockable sliders and compression strap base add excellent extra security.
  • A great option for digital nomads. Dedicated laptop and tablet sleeves make digital nomad life a lot easier.
  • Well-made with a lifetime warranty. This bag will certainly see you through your backpacking days.
  • The Fairview 40 does not have a detachable daypack . The 55L equivalent does . It’s essentially the same bag with an added 15L daypack that latches onto the front.
  • This bag isn’t great for messy packers. The lack of separate compartments and the soft sides can lead to disorganization.
  • The laptop storage is better for small laptops. While it can store laptops up to 15 inches, I don’t recommend anything larger than 13 inches.
  • The laptop storage pocket is not placed close to the back. This may cause your laptop to become suspended in the middle of the bag. If you have a light laptop, this isn’t a problem. If your laptop is heavier, you should purchase a different bag.
  • Lack of variety when it comes to color. The colors are limited to two greenish hues right now.

What Materials Are the Osprey Fairview 40 Made Of?

The main section of this backpack is made of high quality and durable ripstop nylon. It’s also packed out with breathable atilon foam. The accent and bottom parts are made with strong packcloth that is resistant to tearing and scratching.

While none of these materials are waterproof, they are water-resistant, and it does an outstanding job of protecting your valuables.

Aesthetics: How Does the Osprey Fairview 40 Look?

Osprey Fairview 40 in green

It’s simple and understated. And while Osprey backpacks usually come in many colors— that isn’t the case for this one. It only comes in two colors right now.

You can choose between Misty Gray (which is closer to an Olive) and Rainforest Green (no explanation needed, it’s green). They’re not the most aesthetically pleasing in my opinion.

It’s actually nice to see that Osprey hasn’t fallen into the pink-washing trap when designing a women’s backpack .

I’m also low-key thrilled that Osprey has done away with the toxic waste green of the Farpoint mesh interior in favor of a much more calming blue color in the Fairview.

Comfort: Is it Easy to Wear?

Osprey Fairview 40 in green

It also includes a pretty decent sternum strap that distributes weight evenly. But if you do try to overfill this backpack, it does tend to pull on your traps quite severely.

But if you use it as it’s intended, this backpack is wonderfully comfortable. The great hip straps and sternum strap play a significant role in this. Osprey made this pack with sweat-wicking material, so it does a reasonable job of keeping you cool too.

However, if you try to cover a significant distance in a hot climate, it does tend to get you pretty sweaty.

Don’t let that take away from this backpack. This really is a comfortable backpack, and I would recommend it based on comfort alone.

Organization: How Does it Stack Up?

This wouldn’t be a fair Osprey Fairview review if I didn’t talk about storage.

The Osprey Fairview 40 doesn’t have much in the way of separate storage compartments. There’s only the central part of the bag and the internal mesh pocket in the main storage area.

This, combined with the soft sides leading to things spilling over the edges when the bag is open, can cause you to become quite disorganized if you don’t have a packing strategy.

I really recommend adding some storage cubes to this backpack if the thought of a messy backpack stresses you out.

Durability: Will the Osprey Fairview 40 Last?

The durability of this backpack gets a big thumbs up from me. You just have to take one look at it to know that Osprey made this backpack to last. The upholstery is solid enough to bear quite a lot of weight.

The fabric is also durable and resistant to wear and tear. The mesh pockets at the front are the only things that tend to suffer wear and tear. But this has more to do with them being prone to snagging on twigs and door handles.

This isn’t that big of a problem though. The mesh pockets really aren’t that useful except for holding water bottles and other small objects.

Price: How Much Does the Osprey Fairview 40 Cost?

Are you still with me? Good. I’m at the point in this Osprey Fairview review where I’ll discuss money.

This backpack comes in at a mid-range value-for-money. It’s not the cheapest bag you’re going to find, but honestly, who wants to cheap out on a backpack?

It’s also not the most expensive one you’re going to come across. Add to that Osprey’s lifetime warranty, and you can’t go wrong.

The price-quality relationship of this bag is outstanding. It’s an investment in your muscular and skeletal health too. You’ll probably want to add a few packing cubes though, so budget some extra cash to cover those.

Osprey has a great reputation, and a big reason for that is their Almighty Guarantee. This is their term for a lifetime warranty.

If you’re in the US and you need a repair done on your backpack, you can contact Osprey directly on their website. And, if you cover the postage costs, you can send your pack to the factory and the repair team will fix it for free.

Are you outside of the US? Don’t worry. You can contact their International Customer Service team and they will point you to a national distributor who can help you out. Repair policies differ slightly from country to country, but Osprey has your back.

Shipping: Does Osprey Ship Their Bags Internationally?

Osprey provides free and direct shipping to the US and Canada when you purchase from their website. The company’s return policy is super-friendly as well.

You will need to purchase your Osprey Fairview 40 via a local supplier if you’re outside of the US or Canada. Osprey doesn’t directly ship their bags internationally because they rely on local suppliers throughout the world.

Pretty much every good backpack store stocks Osprey. And with the Fairview being the sister to Osprey’s most popular line, you can definitely snag one at your local store. If not, they will probably order it in for you.

A list of local suppliers is available on Osprey’s Fairview 40 product page. Shipping costs vary depending on which supplier you go for.

Osprey Fairview 40 Accessories

Osprey Farpoint packing cubes

Take a look at them and grab a few if you don’t have any already. They make packing and traveling with this backpack that much easier.

Osprey Fairview 40 Review Summary: Final Thoughts

The Osprey Fairview 40 is the sister to Osprey’s best-selling Farpoint 40. Like the Farpoint 40, it’s a welcome addition to the series and it’s great for one-bag travel.

It also has a smaller back measurement than what is available for the Farpoint. So, if you’re a petite woman, this backpack is seriously going to fit you well—particularly if you’re a light traveler.

However, I don’t think the difference between the Farpoint and the Fairview is really all that considerable if you’re over 5’5″. I’d recommend that women 5’5″ and taller try both the Fairview and the Farpoint to decide which one feels best.

I love that the Fairview 40 does all the things you need it to do without being overloaded with features. The suspension system and padded straps do a great job of weight dispersal. There’s quite a lot of space in the backpack, and even though it lacks some of the organization that other bags have, you can fit a lot into this bag with careful planning.

The main downside of this backpack is the soft sides. They do make it easier to access your stuff, but only because all your items tend to spew out all over the floor. This is easily fixed with some reliable packing solutions though, so I doubt this will cause you too much trouble if you’re a smart packer.

I would highly recommend trying out the Fairview if the Farpoint is too big for you. You’re almost definitely going to love it. But let this Osprey Fairview review help you decide for yourself.

At the beginning of the article, you say that the fairview 40L comes with a zip-off day pack. This is incorrect. While you have stated that it’s only the 55L version that comes with the zip-off day pack further down the article, it’s still misleading information at the beginning. Also, the article that led me to this one (the best backpacks for one bag travel) states that the fairview 40L has a zip-off daypack. I know this isn’t true because I’ve researched backpacks but this conflicting information will be confusing for people who are just starting to look at backpack options. I’m not trying to be picky, I just don’t want others to be confused.

Thanks so much for pointing out that error! You’re absolutely right—the 40L does not have a detachable daypack, but the 55L one does. I’ve fixed this article and the carry-on backpacks piece to make sure that information is correct! I appreciate you and hope this helps others in their decisions about this bag.

In your review, you indicate that taller women are better off using the Farpoint version of this bag. It would be more accurate to say that certain people may find one or the other version to be a better fit, based on torso length as well as height. I am a woman, almost 6 ft tall, and I use a XS/S size Fairview 40L. This is because I do not have a long torso (for my height OR in general) and I am quite slim. I have also read reports from shorter men, who therefore have shorter torsos, indicating a preference for the Fairview over the Farpoint. I’ve seen reviews from broader or longer torsoed women who aren’t tall at all stating they prefer the Farpoint. It’s less about gender or generalizations about height, and more about a person’s overall proportions and shape.

Osprey Fairview 40 Review: A Great Women’s Specific Travel Backpack

This article may contain compensated links. Learn more in our disclaimer .

Since August 2017 I am a satisfied owner of the women’s specific travel backpack – Osprey Fairview 40.

And today I want to share with you my Osprey Fairview 40 review .

To tell you more about this female specific carry on  backpack , which now is my main travel backpack. Osprey Fairview 40 vs Farpoint 40? What are the main differences? To be honest there aren’t that many differences, but more about that below.

Before that I was using the Vaude Nevis 30.

But eventually I realized that the Vaude Nevis 30 is a bit too small for my needs.

I’m traveling a lot, often without coming back “home”. And I wanted to fit everything I need in one backpack. Since I don’t like to carry around two backpacks. You get very tired of moving around with two bags, when you do it regularly.

I wanted to fit everything I need in one backpack.

My Vaude bag’s capacity is about 33 liters (30 + the large front compartment), and it was not enough anymore. Yes, I know – you won’t be surprised to read this, because many travelers carry much more. But even though the Vaude Nevis was too small to suit my needs, still I didn’t want and need a 60 or 70 liter backpack.

I just don’t need this much space as I try to pack light. And I wanted a backpack, that is carry on friendly.

Based on my experience I knew that 40-45 liter pack will suit my needs.

Table of Contents

The Fairview 40 Is Such a Backpack

Wearing Osprey Fairview 40 backpack

It’s larger than the Nevis (40 liter vs. approx. 33 liter), and it has two large compartments instead of one.

Now I can keep my clothes separated from my laptop and electronics. It’s nice to have 2 separate compartments because it helps to keep your things organized, as well as you can have fast access to, for instance, your electronics during the security check at the airport.

This travel rucksack is not only ideal for traveling but also for hiking.

But only when you can replenish the supplies on your way. I have been on a few hikes like that, and I felt very comfortable carrying the Osprey Fairview. I’m also pretty sure it will be a good fit on a longer outdoor adventure, like the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal.

But, of course, we shouldn’t forget that the Vaude Nevis 30 is  a snowboarders’ and skiers’ backpack, whereas the Osprey Fairview is a travel backpack. That’s why it’s bigger and more comfortable for travel.

Ok, let’s go into details now!

Osprey Fairview 40: Technical Details

Osprey Fairview 40 backpack - Small photo

SIZE: 40 liter.

DIMENSIONS: 14” x 21” x 14” (35 x 54 x 35 cm).

The bag’s depth in reality is more like 8.3” (21 cm). So it definitely will not be a problem to carry this backpack onto a plane with most of the airlines globally.

Yes, it can be also up to 14” (35 cm), but only if you attach something to the outside of the backpack.

LAPTOP SLEEVE: approx. 14.6” x 11.8” (37 x 30 cm).

TABLET POCKET: approx. 11” x 10.6” (28 x 27 cm).

WEIGHT: 3 lbs (1.44 kg).

1. features.

Osprey Farpoint 40 and Osprey Fairview 40 backpacks

The Osprey Fairview’s backsystem is designed for women .

It means it’s smaller and narrower. So it feels even more comfortable on my back than Kaspars’s Osprey Farpoint 40 , which is the Fairview’s men’s version. Or more precisely – Fairview is Farpoint’s women’s version.

The Osprey Fairview 40 is a rather small travel backpack. It conforms to maximum carry-on dimensions. However, you must check the baggage regulations and restrictions before booking your flight. Some of the budget airlines have very strict rules concerning carry on bags.

The Osprey Fairview 40 features lightweight frame and die-cut spacer mesh hip belt and harness.

The shoulder straps and hip belt can be hidden away behind a flap .

The shoulder straps and hip belt can be hidden away behind a flap.

The flap is zip-around and covers the harness and hip belt completely. When unzipped, it can be rolled all the way down and at the bottom of the back panel secured by a Velcro. I am very glad that the backpack has this feature. Because the flap will protect the straps after the bag has been checked in or while in an overhead compartment on the aircraft.

Some airlines regard travel backpacks with a harness and many attachment points and straps as non-standard luggage.

Because of all these dangling straps. This Osprey Fairview feature will allow you to check the bag without any hassle. It’s just another reason, why it’s such a cool feature. A feature I couldn’t stop thinking while working on this Osprey Fairview 40 review.

Shoulder straps of the backpack can be adjusted both at the bottom and at the top.

The Osprey Fairview 40 features sturdy and well-padded side and top grab handles , as well as a detachable shoulder strap . The side handle and detachable shoulder strap will come in handy when the Fairview is transformed into a duffel bag and being checked in.

Other Useful Features

– Sternum strap with an emergency whistle;

– ID Card holder – at the back of the flap that covers the bag’s shoulder straps and hip belt;

– Internal compression strap system that will help to secure your belongings inside of the main compartment;

– Lockable zippers (of the 2 large compartments) for extra security.

2. Compartments

Una wearing her Osprey Fairview 40 backpack on the beach

Let’s take a look at the backpack!

There are 2 adjustable buckled straps at the front of the bag.

To access bag’s 2  large compartments you need to unbuckle the straps first, at least the top one. The large and sturdy zipper of the main compartment and partly also the zipper of the front compartment are covered with a flap. So, the largest – main – compartment is actually completely concealed.

Now let’s take a look at the zippers!

The two-way head to head zippers of the both compartments can be secured with a small  padlock  (not included). Zipper of the second compartment is not completely hidden under the flap, but it looks fairly water resistant. Anyway, it’s not a waterproof backpack and if you are going to use it during a rain, you should think about getting yourself a rain cover or rain poncho .

Now, we are looking inside the bag’s discreet main compartment.

It’s front-loading, just like the main compartment of a suitcase.

There are 2 inner compression straps, as well as a large mesh pocket on the front panel.

The second compartment is top-loading, and features a built-in padded laptop sleeve that will hold most 15.6” laptops. The sleeve is secured with a Velcro closure. There’s a zippered padded pocket for a tablet computer at the front of the computer sleeve. The panel between the main compartment and the laptop compartment is padded, too.

There’s a small zippered scratch-free front pocket with a key fob. It’s discreet – the zipper is hidden under a flap.

The 2 mesh pockets are located at the front of the backpack.

3. What I Like About Osprey Fairview 40 Travel Backpack

Osprey Fairview 40

My top 3 favorite parts of the Osprey Fairview 40:

– the strong and durable backsystem,

– well-padded shoulder straps,

– sturdy hip belt.

All of it together makes this bag so comfy, so I even don’t feel the weight on my back. When I start to feel tired I shift the weight to my hips by extending the length of the shoulder straps a bit. And I really love the hide-the-straps-and-hip-belt feature. If you are curious – Farpoint 40 also has it.

When I first saw the Fairview 40, I was surprised at how sturdy and well-built grab handles are.

They seem extremely durable and are super cushioned. I am happy that the backpack has a side handle as well. It will come in handy when I will be checking the bag in and later collecting it at the baggage carousel (the harness and hip belt will be tucked away securely). Or when I’ll be traveling on a bus and putting my bag in the baggage compartment under or at the back of the bus.

I love that there are 2  separate large compartments (my Vaude had only 1) – one for clothes and the second one – for laptop and tablet. I like to keep my electronics separated from my clothes. Also I want to access them quickly during the security check at the airport. Having 2 separate compartments helps.

I will be using packing cubes to keep everything together neatly in the main compartment of the backpack, as well to maximize packing space.

4. Drawbacks

Hiking with Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack

One drawback to this backpack – its mesh pockets .

There are 2 mesh pockets in the front of the backpack. In one of these pockets I put my 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) water bottle. The second one stays empty. If the backpack is full it’s not that easy to put the water bottle in. I rather have one side mesh pocket instead of 2  front pockets.

Because anyway they can’t be properly used. Simply because of the pocket design and the way these pockets are sewn to a bag.

A second drawback from my point of view is that the zippered tablet pocket is rather thin. This pocket is located at the front of the laptop sleeve, and there’s not so much padding between them. But as my laptop mostly is in its own padded sleeve, this is not a big deal for me, really.

Osprey Farpoint vs Fairview? Osprey Farpoint 40 vs Fairview 40?

Osprey Farpoint 40 vs Osprey Fairview 40

So, Osprey Farpoint vs Fairview, what are the main differences?

The main difference between these two bags is that Fairview is designed for women , but Farpoint – for men.

Visually, as you can see from the photos above, they look exactly the same. However, there are differences. The Fairview’s back system is redesigned to offer women’s specific fit. Narrower shoulder width, shorter torso length and ergonomically shaped hipbelt are three of the main differences here.

Another difference is that the Fairview only comes in one size which is a women’s S/M. With back length measurement of 38 cm – 45.5 cm. But Farpoint comes in 2 sizes – S/M and M/L.

Osprey Fairview 40 Backpack Review: Bottom line

For now, the Fairview 40 is the best backpack I’ve ever had.

It’s also one of the best backpacking backpacks available right now. It’s sturdy, durable and very comfy, same like all Osprey backpacks I’ve had a chance to try on. It looks good, and the color (Rainforest Green) is lovely, too. Because of the green color, it will be easy to spot it among other bags on the baggage carousel.

It’s rather lightweight (3 lbs / 1.44 kg), even with all of its sturdy hardware, cushioned harness and handles.

The Fairview 40 doesn’t have serious drawbacks and definitely has been made with travelers in mind.

The bag is spacious enough for me to be able to fit everything I need in one bag . Even for a several-month long trip.

Good news! If the Fairview 40 is too small to suit your needs, there are 2 larger Osprey travel backpacks from the same series – the Fairview 55 and 70! The Fairview 70 comes with a detachable day pack, so actually it is a 57 liter main pack plus 13 liter daypack.

There’s the men’s version of Fairview as well. It’s the Osprey Farpoint. To learn more about it read our review of Osprey Farpoint 40 !

Kaspars with his Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack - Best Carry on Backpack

Disclosure: Although Osprey Farview 40l backpack was sponsored by Osprey Europe, my opinions shared are my own.

Book Your Trip Like a PRO

1. Book Your Flight. Find cheap flights using Kiwi.com , Momondo.com . Or subscribe to Dollar Flight Club , if you don’t want to be searching for the flights yourself. Kiwi currently is my first choice.

2. Book Your Accommodation. Booking.com , Agoda.com and Airbnb . I use Booking and Agoda at least a dozen times a year, and Airbnb – when looking for a long-term stay. My best tip is to ALWAYS compare the price. Sometimes the same hotel is cheaper on Booking.com, other times – on Agoda. Always compare the price!

3. Buy Your Travel Insurance . Ekta and SafetyWings are two companies I can recommend. Ekta offers some extra benefits, that will be important for those doing some higher risk activities (make sure to choose the right plan!), while SafetyWings is better for digital nomads. SafetyWings is also very affordable .
