November 15, 1992: Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Final’ Concert

costa1

Osbourne with Sabbath in ’92

It helped bring us to where we were supposed to be in 2023: Ozzy Osbourne doing a final world tour, only the 1992 retirement was with Black Sabbath . Osbourne had recently gotten sober, and following his 1991 No More Tears album – Ozzy’s sixth solo release and a #7 hit album – was playing his “No More Tours” jaunt that he claimed was his last tour (he said he wanted to spend more time home with his family). He invited Sabbath to open its last two shows at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA on November 14-15, 1992. These would be their first shows together since Live Aid in 1985.

Ozzy’s former bandmates Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler were game. They had recently reunited with Sabbath singer Ronnie James Dio (who had replaced Osbourne) and made the Dehumanizer album. But Dio refused to play the shows – maybe something to do with the dwarf nicknamed “Ronnie” that on a previous Ozzy tour he would hang by the neck until dead at the peak of the concerts? Dio did his last show with Sabbath on November 13 in Oakland, Calif., and departed back to his own career.

Rob Halford of Judas Priest stepped in to sing with Sabbath opening for Ozzy. Osbourne joined Sabbath both nights for second encores of the songs “Black Sabbath,” “Fairies Wear Boots,” “Iron Man” and “Paranoid.”

And of course, Ozzy returned to the road with his “Retirement Sucks Tour” three years later. We really couldn’t make up tales like this one if we tried.

Black Sabbath’s massive “The End” tour came to a close on February 4, 2017. It began in Omaha, Neb., on January 20, 2016.

And, then, naturally, Ozzy reversed course and announced another farewell tour, dubbed No More Tours 2 , which began in 2018 and, after numerous stops and starts due to various health issues, was expected to continue in 2020. It moved to 2023, with the European and U.K. tour scheduled to begin that May 3 with Judas Priest as the opening act. Osbourne ultimately cancelled it.

Somehow, he managed to release a new studio album, Ordinary Man , in 2020, and another, Patient Number 9 , in 2022.

Well, we heard it was coming, and now it’s official. Ozzy Osbourne will be going on his final world tour starting in April. Ozzy will be joined by his longtime backing band Zakk Wylde, Blasko, Tommy Clufetos and Adam Wakeman on keyboards. Stone Sour will open. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Saturday, February 17th at 10am via Livenation , with a presale happening starting on Wednesday, February 14th at 10am via sponsor Citi’s Private Pass program. Ozzy Osbourne Announces Farewell World Tour

UPDATE: The Ozzman has shared footage of yesterday's press conference announcing the farewell tour. Joined by his wife and manager Sharon Osbourne, he took questions about his upcoming jaunt, potential new music, and what kinds of shows he'll play once the trek winds up ("Anything but Coachella," replies Sharon). Having worked up quite the appetite from the presser, the rocker proceeded to slice a massive, metal-as-fuck cake plastered with (presumably edible) photos of himself, because why not?

UPDATE: Ozzy Osbourne has announced North American dates for his farewell tour, with Stone Sour manning the opening slot. See the itinerary below.

Nine months after laying his beloved Black Sabbath to rest in their hometown of Birmingham, England, Ozzy Osbourne has announced his own "farewell world tour." The Ozzman's global jaunt will have him on the road from mid-2018 through 2020; the Crazy Train will depart from Mexico next May, before speeding through South America, Russia, western Europe, and eventually, North America. He'll be joined by his current backing band: guitarist Zakk Wylde, bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson, drummer Tommy Clufetos and keyboardist Adam Wakeman. Find a preliminary list of dates below.

While Osbourne has framed the upcoming trek as his last, he doesn't rule out the potential of future one-offs. "People keep asking me when I'm retiring," the metal icon said. "This will be my final world tour, but I can't say I won't do some shows here and there." (It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Osbourne's sworn off touring altogether; the rocker's solo trek behind 1992's No More Tears — aptly titled "No More Tours" — was originally planned as his last.)

Ozzy Osbourne announces dates for “No More Tours 2” farewell tour

The North American leg kicks off in late August and sees Osbourne joined on the road by Stone Sour

Ozzy Osbourne announces dates for “No More Tours 2” farewell tour

Back in November, Ozzy Osbourne revealed plans for his final world tour . The former Black Sabbath frontman has now shared more details of the forthcoming trek, which he’s cheekily dubbed, “No More Tours 2.” (His previously final tour in 1992 was called “No More Tours.”)

“I’ve been extremely blessed to have had two successful music careers,” Osbourne shared through a press statement. “I’m looking at this final tour as being a huge celebration for my fans and anyone who has enjoyed my music over the past five decades.”

As reported previously , the tour is expected to continue into 2020. At its conclusion, Osbourne will retire from the road, but will continue to perform select live shows in the future. Osbourne will be joined on the road by his longtime collaborators Zakk Wylde (guitar), Blasko (bass), Tommy Clufetos (drums), and Adam Wakeman (keyboards).

Ozzy’s North America run with Stone Sour will kick off on August 30th in Allentown, Pennsylvania and hit cities including Boston, Dallas, and Los Angeles before concluding on October 13th in Las Vegas.

Tickets for the North American dates go on sale to the general public on February 17th at 10 a.m. You can also grab them here. Check out the complete itinerary below.

Flashback: Rob Halford Fronts Black Sabbath in 1992

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In the summer of 1992 Ozzy Osbourne was a mere 43 years old and his new album No More Tears was a huge hit, so it was a pretty big shock to his fans when he announced a farewell tour, claiming he wanted to spend more time with his family. A cynic might suggest that the No More Tours outing was a transparent ploy to sell more tickets cooked up by a certain wife/manager, but it certainly worked. Tickets sold like crazy all over the world.

Where Does Black Sabbath Rank on our 100 Greatest Artists List?

The tour was slated to wrap up November 15th at the Pacific Ampitheater in Costa Mesa, California. Ozzy hadn’t played with Black Sabbath since a brief set at Live Aid in 1985, but he invited them to open up the show and then play a few songs with him at the end of the night, effectively bringing his career full circle. The idea didn’t sit too well with Ronnie James Dio, who had spent the year touring with Sabbath in support of their new album Dehumanizer .

Trump Admits He Asked Secret Service to Take Him to Capitol on Jan. 6

Their song spawned an internet mystery. now they’re ready to tell their story, kristi noem defends executing 14-month-old dog: ‘it was not a puppy’, kendrick did everything he needed to on ‘euphoria’.

Dio flat out refused to open up for the former lead singer of his band and then watch in the wings as they reunited at the end of the night. The guys in Sabbath were determined to go on with the gig, so they recruited Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford to front them for the night. Here’s amateur footage of the complete show. Halford does a great job considering he had to learn an hour-long set of songs he’d never done before.

Needless to say, Ozzy was back on the road just three years later when he launched the Retirement Sucks Tour. By that point, Black Sabbath were back playing clubs with singer Tony Martin at the helm. The group got back with Ozzy a couple years after that, though he continued to balance the group with his solo career. Before a show in New Jersey in the summer of 2004, Ozzy got sick and Rob Halford once again took over as singer. He flubbed the lyrics to “Paranoid” and many in the crowd were quite upset about getting denied Ozzy at Ozzfest, but they did get to witness yet another chapter in the endless soap opera of Black Sabbath.

At a press conference at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday (Feb. 6), Ozzy Osbourne , along with wife Sharon, announced the first North American leg of his farewell tour. “I’m 70-something. I’ve missed my family over the years,” Ozzy said. “I’ve always been out on the road the whole time with a few breaks here and there. It’s just time.”

The grandfather, who recently welcomed his eighth grandchild, is looking to slow down after his final tour but insists it isn’t the end for his music career.

“I’m not retiring from the music business; I’m just not doing world tours anymore. I’ll be doing gigs,” Ozzy says.

When questioned about what kind of shows fans can expect from the heavy metal musician, his wife Sharon responded, “Anything but Coachella.”

While the tour will be Ozzy’s final extensive trip around the world, the Black Sabbath singer confirmed that Ozzfest — the touring heavy metal and hard rock festival he, his wife and son Jack put together — will continue.

In February 2017, Ozzy and the rest of his first band Black Sabbath played their final shows together. The three-year The End Tour concluded in their hometown of Birmingham in the U.K. with original members Ozzy, Tony Iommi  and Geezer Butler.

“With the Sabbath thing, I didn’t think I would get emotional, but at the last gig in Birmingham, where we started, I got all emotional,” Ozzy said Tuesday. “It is the greatest love affair I’ve ever had in my life.”

Ozzy had announced the first No More Tours dates in 1992, when he was incorrectly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The stops announced Tuesday for the No More Tours 2 join the previously announced overseas leg. From May 5 to July 8, Ozzy will head to Central and South America, Europe and close out in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Backing Ozzy on tour will be longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde , bassist Rob “Blasko” Nicholson, drummer Tommy Clufetos and keyboardist Adam Wakeman.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Saturday, Feb. 17, through LiveNation.com at 10 a.m. local time.

Ozzy Osbourne will perform two final farewell shows in his beloved hometown of Birmingham: "two more shows to say goodbye"

Sharon Osbourne reveals Ozzy will finish up his live career once and for all with some special gigs very close to home

Ozzy Osbourne performing live

While Ozzy Osbourne officially announced his retirement from touring last year, rumours have persisted that the Prince Of Darkness will play more live shows before all is said and done - not least courtesy of Ozzy himself, who told Metal Hammer in 2023: "I’m getting myself fit...I want to do one more album and then go back on the road.”

Now, Ozzy's wife and manager Sharon has revealed that plans are in place for Ozzy to play two emotional, final farewell shows in his hometown of Birmingham at some point in the future. Speaking on the London stop-off of her Cut The Crap spoken word tour at the Fortune Theatre last night (Monday, January 22), Sharon reiterated that Ozzy will never again tour full-time, but that he will perform again to say goodbye to his fans.

“He won’t tour again but we are planning on doing two more shows to say goodbye as he feels like ‘I have never said goodbye to my fans and I want to say goodbye properly’," Sharon stated, as reported by Rolling Stone .

“We will do it in Aston Villa where Ozzy is from," Sharon continued, possibly suggesting that Ozzy could be lined up to play the midlands football club's Villa Park home stadium. "His voice is still absolutely perfect. And all the time he has been off he still does his singing lessons so his voice is perfect. And he can joke, yeah."

Sharon also confirmed that Ozzy still loves being involved in music as much as ever, noting: “He has all these melodies in his head. Even if you don’t like his music you can’t not like Ozzy, he just draws you in.’"

Ozzy is believed to be releasing a new album at some point this year, continuing what has been a prolific streak for the former Black Sabbath frontman, who released thirteenth solo album Patient Number 9 in 2022 and its predecessor, Ordinary Man , in 2020. Both those albums were produced by Andrew Watt, who will also be helming Osbourne's upcoming - and possibly final - studio record.

Osbourne - who was originally scheduled to be playing October's epic Power Trip festival in California before being forced to pull out - confirmed his retirement from touring in an emotional statement shared in January 2023.

"Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way," lamented the Double O. "My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country."

Hopefully, those ideas are soon going to be put into action, and Ozzy will be able to have the career send-off he deserves.

OZZY OSBOURNE Opens Up About Undergoing Stem Cell Therapy For Parkinson's Disease

On the latest episode of SiriusXM 's " Ozzy Speaks ", Ozzy Osbourne spoke with co-host Billy Morrison about receiving stem cell therapy for Parkinson's disease.

The legendary BLACK SABBATH frontman was diagnosed in 2003 with Parkin 2 — a very rare genetic form of Parkinson's. During a TV appearance in January 2020, the singer disclosed that he was 'stricken" with the disease which occurs when the nerve cells of the body degenerate and levels of dopamine are reduced. Dopamine is an essential chemical that is produced by these nerve cells which send signals to different parts of the brain to control movements of the body.

"I've just come back from the doctor after having some stem cells put in me.," Ozzy said on "Ozzy Speaks" .

"The thing is, you have it, and you go, "I don't feel that great," but I don't know what it would be like if I didn't have it.

"This stuff that I have, it's kind of like a super fucking stem cell, you know?" he explained. "They put three bottles in me this morning.

"I had one about three months ago and this was a follow-up, and I've got to go in about six months from now."

According to Cells4Life , scientists have been using stem cells in recent years to better understand and treat Parkinson's disease.

Stem cell therapy has made advanced progress and preliminary research shows that transplanting new dopamine cells into the brain may help to replace what is lost during Parkinson's disease and reduce its symptoms.

Parkinson's disease is an incurable progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects an estimated one million Americans, more men than women and most often in people over age 60. The disease is not fatal but it increases the risk pf pneumonia, falls and other conditions that may lead to death.

Last November, Ozzy spoke to Rolling Stone UK about the possibility of returning to the live stage. He said: "I'm taking it one day at a time, and if I can perform again, I will. But it's been like saying farewell to the best relationship of my life. At the start of my illness, when I stopped touring, I was really pissed off with myself, the doctors, and the world. But as time has gone on, I've just gone, 'Well, maybe I've just got to accept that fact.

"I'm not going to get up there and do a half-hearted Ozzy looking for sympathy. What's the fucking point in that? I'm not going up there in a fucking wheelchair. I've seen Phil Collins perform recently, and he's got virtually the same problems as me. He gets up there in a wheelchair. But I couldn't do that."

Ozzy went on to pay tribute to his fans who made it possible for him to have a five-plus-decade career, first with SABBATH and then as a solo artist.

"That's one of the things I've been the most fucking pissed off at: I never got the chance to say goodbye or thank you," he said. "Because my fans are what it's all about. If I can just do a few gigs… They've been loyal to me for fucking years. They write to me, they know all about my dogs. It's my extended family really, and they give us the lifestyle we have. For whatever reason, that's my goal to work to. To do those shows. If it's at Ozzfest or somewhere, or even a fucking gig at the Roundhouse [in London]

"If I can't continue doing shows on a regular basis, I just want to be well enough to do one show where I can say, 'Hi guys, thanks so much for my life.' That's what I'm working towards, and if I drop down dead at the end of it, I'll die a happy man."

Earlier in November, Ozzy and Sharon 's son Jack told The Messenger that his father's days of hitting the road are likely behind him. "I don't think he'll tour again," Jack said. "But he's gunning to do one-off shows — like festivals, gigs, things like that."

"He's not done yet," he added.

Last September, Ozzy opened up about his series of operations in an interview with Metal Hammer as he shared his hopes of making "one more album" and a return to touring.

"I've had all the surgery now, thank God," the 75-year-old said. "I'm feeling okay. It was just dragging on. I thought I'd be back on my feet months ago. I just couldn't get used to this mode of living, constantly having something wrong. I can't walk properly yet, but I'm not in any pain anymore and the surgery on my spine went great."

Osbourne also discussed his plans for 2024, saying: "I'm getting myself fit. I've done two albums fairly recently [2020's 'Ordinary Man' and 2022's 'Patient Number 9' ], but I want to do one more album and then go back on the road."

Last July, the BLACK SABBATH singer canceled his appearance at the Power Trip festival due to his ongoing physical ailments.

Ozzy 's health issues, including suffering a nasty fall and dislodging metal rods placed in his spine following a quad-bike accident in 2003, as well as catching COVID-19 more than two years ago, forced him to cancel some of his previously announced tours.

While Osbourne 's health issues forced him to scrap most of his live appearances, the musician said he would return if his condition improved.

Osbourne 's previously announced European tour with guests JUDAS PRIEST , originally set for 2019 and then rescheduled three times, was officially canceled in early February 2023.

Despite his health problems, Osbourne has performed a couple of times in the last two years, including at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022 and at the NFL halftime show at the season opener Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills game in September 2022.

10 Best Ozzy Osbourne Movie And TV Appearances

All hail the Prince of Darkness.

Ozzy Osbourne War Pigs WWE

Ozzy Osbourne’s place in music history has been solidified, as he and Black Sabbath are often credited as the first heavy metal band. Releasing 19 studio albums over five decades, the Prince of Darkness has won two Grammys (plus a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award), influenced countless of the most well-known bands in the genre and, you know, bit the head off of a bat. His eccentric personality and wild look made him the perfect choice for several great TV and movie appearances over the years, and here are 10 of the best.

While the Black Sabbath frontman has been known to portray characters — lending his voice to several animated projects — Ozzy Osbourne is a character in and of himself, and many of his best offerings feature the Godfather of Metal just being Ozzy.

Ozzy Osbourne in Little Nicky.

Little Nicky (2000)

Adam Sandler boasts a pretty impressive catalog of projects that span multiple genres, but the 2000 action comedy Little Nicky is not considered one of his greatest. It still has developed a cult following over the years for its ridiculously devilish story and bevy of celebrity cameos. One of the famous faces to make an appearance is Ozzy Osbourne, who Nicky summons after his brother Adrian (Rhys Ifans) transforms into a bat. You can imagine where things go from there.

The Osbournes

The Osbournes (2002)

Years before the Kardashian-Jenner bunch became the royal family of reality TV, America fell in love with The Osbournes . The MTV series captured what it was like to live with Ozzy Osbourne, his wife Sharon and two younger children, Jack and Kelly. The show lasted for four seasons and made household names of all of them, but more importantly it gave us a different perspective on the Prince of Darkness. It was hilarious to see Ozzy bumbling around helplessly, calling out for, “Sharon!”

The Osbournes is not available to stream or buy, but you can stream their 2020 series The Osbournes Want to Believe on Max.

Ozzy Osbourne and family in Austin Powers In Goldmember

Austin Powers In Goldmember (2002)

Mike Myers got in on The Osbournes ’ craze back in the early aughts in the third movie of his shagadelic trilogy, Austin Powers in Goldmember . Repeating a bit from the 1999 sequel that involved a phallic-shaped rocket, Goldmember features Dr. Evil shooting down a satellite shaped like a pair of breasts. An amusing montage of double entendres ensues, eventually cutting to Ozzy shouting, “Boobs!” He then explains to his family members sitting next to him that the Austin Powers filmmakers are boobs because they already used that joke in The Spy Who Shagged Me .

The sequel to the DreamWorks animated hit Trolls highlighted a number of different genres of music, and that means there were some big names in the Trolls World Tour voice cast , including Mary J. Blige, J Balvin, Kelly Clarkson , George Clinton and, of course, Ozzy Osbourne. The Black Sabbath frontman voiced King Thrash, the retired king of hard rock, with the effects of his wild rock star lifestyle made evident through Osbourne’s signature nonsensical mumbling and his use of a motorized wheelchair, aka his mobile throne.

On stage the band sings “End of the Beginning,” before the singer sits down with one of the suspects for an interview. Talk about playing off-type! Ozzy Osbourne may be known for portraying himself in many of his TV and movie appearances, but the 1986 comedy horror Trick or Treat brilliantly cast the Prince of Darkness in a role nobody would expect — a TV evangelist. It’s hilarious to watch the Rev. Aaron Gilstrom clutch his proverbial pearls at suggestive song lyrics and proclaim that the rock stars “have to be stopped!”

Two things you may not think about when it comes to the Godfather of Metal are animated deer and Shakespeare, however, those worlds collided in Gnomeo & Juliet , the animated reimagining of Romeo & Juliet . Ozzy Osbourne voices Fawn, the miniature deer statue and best friend of Tybalt.

The Jerky Boys: The Movie (1995)

Johnny Brennan and Kamal Ahmed came to fame in the 1990s as the Jerky Boys comedy duo, who developed a following for making prank phone calls. After a couple of comedy albums, the duo made a movie, appropriately titled The Jerky Boys: The Movie . Ozzy Osbourne makes an appearance as the manager for the band Helmet. Johnny and Kamal convince the manager that they’ve replaced two roadies who left to go on tour with The Monkees. Say what you will about the movie overall, but Ozzy’s utter disbelief that he got shunned for “the fuckin’ Monkees?!” is pretty funny.

Whether you prefer Ozzy Osbourne behind the microphone or in front of the camera, there’s no denying that the Prince of Darkness can entertain, as he’s been doing so for half a century now.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 inductees include Peter Frampton, Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige

Peter Frampton, April 14, 2024, at The Shell in San Diego

This year’s other inductees include Foreigner, Kool & The Gang and A Tribe Called Quest. Honorees in the Musical Excellence and Musical Influence categories included Dionne Warwick, MC5, John Mayall and Jimmy Buffett.

After failing to even be nominated in previous years, Cher, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne and Kool & The Gang will all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024, alongside repeat nominees Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band and hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest.

In a novel move, Frampton encouraged concertgoers to vote for him during his April 14 show at The Shell in San Diego by having the QR code for the ballot projected onto the large video screen behind him on stage.

Five other artists who were also on the ballot for the first time this year did not earn enough votes to be inducted, specifically, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Sadé, Mariah Carey and Sinéad O’Connor, who died last July. Also failing to make the cut for induction were two repeat nominees — Jane’s Addiction and the hip-hop duo Erik B. & Rakim.

Sinead O'Connor has died at 56. She is shown at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards L.A. Feb. 22, 1989.

Appreciation: Sinead O’Connor, dead at 56, was a singular artist: ‘I would have liked to be a priest,’ she told us in 2013

‘I would like to be remembered,’ she told us, ‘as a loving mother and grandmother. I’d like to be the rocking-est granny! I’d like to go out like (pioneering blues and rock singer) Big Mama Thornton.’

July 26, 2023

This year’s inductees were announced during Sunday night’s telecast of “American Idol” by Lionel Richie, a 2022 hall inductee, and show host Ryan Seacrest. The list of 2024 honorees also includes six artists who will receive the hall’s Musical Excellence and Musical Influence awards, two categories that are chosen by the hall’s in-house committees.

The 2024 Musical Excellence Award honorees include Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Jimmy Buffett (who died last September from cancer) and the pioneering Detroit proto-punk-rock band MC5, whose leader, Wayne Kramer, died of cancer Feb. 2. The final iteration of the group, which included San Diego guitarist Stevie Salas playing alongside fellow guitarist Kramer, toured in 2022.

MC5 had been nominated for induction in six previous years but did not earn enough votes to gain induction. Buffett, whose final concert of his career with his Coral Reefer Band took place last May at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, was never nominated.

This year’s Musical Influence Award honorees include England’s John Mayall and the late Alexis Korner, who in the 1960s jointly spearheaded the blues boom in the UK that fueled the launching of such bands as the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. At 90, Mayall appears to be the oldest of this year’s hall honorees.

Dec. 5, 2021

The third 2024 Musical Influence Award honoree is the late Big Mama Thornton, whose galvanizing recordings of the songs “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain” greatly influenced the subsequent versions of those songs by, respectively, Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin.

Cher in Los Angeles on April 16, 2023.

Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording and are honored for their “originality, impact and influence.” Ballots are cast by the hall’s more than 1,000 voting members, which include previous inductees and an array of music industry professionals, including this writer.

In 2013, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame introduced it “fan vote,” in which the top five nominees that fans vote online for are submitted as one official ballot that is counted with the rest of the Voting Committee’s. The quantitative impact of the fans’ choices is minimal — accounting for about 0.3 percent of the total — but creates a fair amount of buzz.

This year’s two top fan-vote earners are Dave Matthews Band (with 586,745 votes) and Frampton, with 529,077. This year’s online fan voting was supposed to continue until Friday, but instead concluded April 15.

The hall’s final 2024 honoree, powerhouse music, film and TV industry executive Suzanne de Passe, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. It is named after the co-founder of Atlantic Records.

The announcement of this year’s inductees comes as several of them are battling serious medical conditions.

Frampton, 73, has an autoimmune disease called inclusion body myositis that affects his muscle control and sense of balance. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2019, after falling several times on stage. He now walks with a cane, performs while seated and has lost some control of his fingers.

Osbourne, 75, rose to fame as the lead singer in the heavy-metal band Black Sabbath before launching his solo career in 1980. He suffered a serious fall in 2019, has since undergone four spinal surgeries and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003.

Mick Jones, the 79-year-old founder of the band Foreigner, disclosed his own Parkinson’s diagnosis in February of this year. He cites his condition as the reason he no longer tours with his group. Foreigner’s farewell tour includes a June 28 show at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Mick Jones is understandably proud that his band, Foreigner, sold more than 80 million albums worldwide between the release of its self-titled 1977 debut album and 1987’s “Inside Information.”

July 25, 2018

Fellow 2024 Rock Hall inductees Kool & The Gang will perform June 24 in San Diego at The Shell. Bassist and band founder Robert “Kool” Bell is the only surviving member still on tour with the group.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and will stream live on Disney+ and be available on Hulu the following day. An edited airing of the ceremony will be broadcast on ABC at a later date.

Cher may command the spotlight at the induction ceremony — should she choose to attend.

In December — two months before the 2024 nominees were announced — the 77-year-old singer blasted the hall for never having made her a nominee despite her having been eligible to be on the ballot since 1990.

“You know what? I wouldn’t be in it (the hall) now if they gave me a million dollars,” Cher said during a telecast of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

“I’m not kidding you,” Cher continued. “I was about to say something else. … I was about to say I’m not sh-ting you. I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Announces 2024 Inductees: Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews, Peter Frampton, Foreigner and More

Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
