You can also get creative on the ‘Art City’ walking tour or discover our Indigenous roots on the ‘This City is Whadjuk Country’ tour.

Get your walking shoes ready…

These self-guided trails can take up to two hours.

You can join in or depart from the trail anywhere along the way. The trail intersects with the city’s free CAT buses servicing East Perth, Northbridge, West Perth, central Perth and the foreshore (except Good Friday, ANZAC Day and Christmas Day).

Although the Swan River Colony was established as a free settlement in 1829, convict transportation was introduced in 1850 to answer the demand for a cheap and plentiful supply of labour for the small population.

The introduction of these reluctant immigrants caused much debate and controversy amongst the residents, who feared that their free colony would be forever tainted by the convict class. Whilst convict transport lasted only 18 years, the legacy of this period is embedded in the streets of the city and the folklore of the State.

When John Septimus Roe, naval officer, surveyor and explorer, first laid out the City of Perth in 1829, he envisaged a powerful city at the centre of a strong economy. St Georges Terrace was the focus of this design, a broad avenue running parallel to the shores of the majestic Swan River. Today, St Georges Terrace continues its role as the city’s powerhouse. Follow this trail to discover the history of the city through its iconic places of influence. As you walk along, keep your eyes out for plaques placed in the pavement that recognise the many people who have influenced the growth of Perth and Western Australia.

This historical walk through Perth city will highlight the ‘boom’ created by gold and the surge of growth, wealth and prosperity in Western Australia that followed. The City’s population swelled from 8,500 to over 27,000 in a decade and it seemed Perth would ‘bust’ as this remote town turned into a buzzing cosmopolitan city.

Public art can stimulate thinking, deepen sense of place and transform how we engage with spaces. Within Perth city there are more than 200 public artworks reflecting the city’s identity, both past and present. This curated art trail includes a selection of public artworks that showcase our evolving CBD. Immerse yourself in our city.

The City of Perth’s 28 parks and reserves are located on Whadjuk Nyoongar boodja (country) and we acknowledge that the Whadjuk Nyoongar people are the traditional custodians of the land on which these parks and reserves have been created. The City’s beautifully curated green open spaces cover one tenth of the city area and combine heritage, public art and water features to offer a break from the bustle of city life. Take some time out to experience the tranquility of Perth’s open spaces.

Built between 1867 and 1870, the Perth Town Hall is a landmark and an important building in Perth’s history, unique in several ways. It is the only major Australian town hall designed in a Medieval style. It is also the only Australian town hall built by convicts, providing evidence of their workmanship and technical skills which, during this time, were superior to those of free citizens. From the beginning, it was conceived not as Council offices, but as a venue for civic events, private and community gatherings and celebrations. Major works completed in 2005 restored the Town Hall to its place as a popular Perth venue for the new century.

Rumour has it there is a secret hidden in the City of Perth. We’ve code-named it Point Zero. To discover this secret, we need a clever team of investigators to follow the clues and crack the code.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find the 12 hidden coded messages in our City’s streets – each one on a blue plaque set in the ground.

To discover the secret of Point Zero, you need to decode all the messages.

The first of two Karla Yarning maps, This city is Whadjuk country, explores Whadjuk Nyoongar history before the arrival of white settlers in 1829. On this walk participants will get a feel for the way Whadjuk people lived before white settlement.

The second Karla Yarning map, Fighting for families, country, rights and recognition, explores Aboriginal history in Perth after 1829. On this walk, participants can learn about important events and developments including the resistance of Whadjuk leaders Midgegooroo and his son Yagan in the 1830s, the Prohibited Area zone in place between 1927-1954, Aboriginal protest rallies held in the 1930s and 1940s and the establishment of important Aboriginal organisations.

The Claisebrook Village Art Trail has been curated by local artist, Andrew Hawes. As a parent and grandfather, he appreciates that families have different needs to other groups and has hand painted 160 small gecko sculptures that also acts as a 'treasure trail.' Follow the gecko pointers and pavement stickers for an artists eye view of our Village. See how many geckos you can find!

The two-story mansion west of the Concert Hall is the Perth Government House. It serves as the official residence of the Governor of Western Australia – as it has since it was built in 1864.The building’s design incorporates stone and brick and features square windows, decorative gables and turrets.

Since Swan River Colony was established in 1829, the site of the Government House has been used as housing and offices for staff. Other nearby buildings include the City of Perth Council House, the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the Old Court House (the oldest building in the city).

Walk west on St. George’s Terrace past the Council House to the corner park, Stirling Gardens.

#10 Stirling Gardens, Perth

At the corner of St. Georges Terrace and Barrack Street is Stirling Gardens. Opened as a botanical garden in 1845, it’s the oldest park in the city. Statues (including kangaroos), artwork and water features are found throughout the small space.

Cross to the north side of the street and walk east to take a peek inside the St. George’s Cathedral.

#11 St. George’s Anglican Cathedral

View of St. George’s Anglican Cathedral, Perth, Australia

Built in the late 1800s, the St. George’s Cathedral is listed on the State Heritage Register. For us, the church is one of the most awe-inspiring and peaceful Perth places to visit. From the outside, the red-brick building is beautiful…but inside it is simply stunning. Sunlight playfully filters through the stained-glass windows and dances on the brick and wooden interior.

Retrace your steps, walking west on St. George’s Terrace to Barrack St. Turn right (north) and walk to Hay Street; on the corner is Town Hall.

#12 Perth Town Hall

When the Town Hall was built in 1870, the classic clock tower made it the tallest building in the city. Today, the historic district sits in the shadow of nearby skyscrapers. The brick, Gothic-style Town Hall, which was built by convicts, has undergone major renovations over the years. Visitors are free to view the interior, which is open to the public from 10am to 4pm from Monday to Saturday.

From Town Hall, walk west on the pedestrian-only Hay Street. Walk about 100m, keeping an eye out for the clock and entrance to London Court.

#13 London Court

View of London Court, Perth, Australia

The open-air shopping arcade, London Court, was designed in 1937 and is listed on the National Trust of Australia. The old-world, cobblestoned lane is lined with boutique shops and chic cafes. The street connects Hay Street to St. George’s Terrace. Both entrances are ornately decorated and adorned with clocks on the outside and statues on the inside.

Your Perth city walk could end here, but we recommend hopping on a free Green Cat bus and riding uphill to Kings Park. Note : It is possible to walk to the park, too!

#14 Kings Park, Perth

Rotary Wishing Well, Perth, Australia

The lush, expansive Kings Park is a nature retreat near the heart of the city. In fact, the park is one of the best places to walk in Perth! Walking trails wind through the park to war memorials, planned gardens and scenic viewpoints.

Boab Tree, Perth, Australia

You can spend hours wandering the paths, admiring the views and enjoying the fresh air. One of the best cheap things to do in Perth is to grab food from the grocery store and find a picnic spot in Kings Park.

WA State War Memorial

View of Kings Park, Perth, Australia

Located on Mount Eliza, the monument overlooks the city and river below. In addition to the Flame of Remembrance and Pool of Reflection, names of soldiers who died at war are etched into the monument.

Perth Botanic Garden

Visit the Perth Botanic Garden, Australia

The Western Australian Botanic Garden features an astounding array of native Australian plants. Make sure to seek out the iconic Boab Tree and the Pioneer Woman’s Fountain.

The viewpoint DNA Tower sits on the highest point in the park. There are 101 steps to the top of the structure that resembles a double helix.

Perth Walking Trails

Walking Bridge at Perth Botanic Garden, Australia

The two most popular walking trails in Perth Kings Park are Law Walk (a 1.5-mile loop) and Kokoda Track. Visitors can obtain more information about the Perth trails at the park’s information center or online .

Kings Park Perth Walking Tours

Volunteers lead nature walks in Perth Kings Park three times daily. The guided walking tours are free and feature the highlights of the park, as well as information about the history of the land.

PERTH FREE BUS : It’s fairly easy to walk around Perth, but when your feet get tired, you can hop on a Free Perth Bus! The Perth CAT Bus (Central Area Transit) has four lines – Red, Blue, Yellow and Green – that make getting around the CBD free and easy! Get more information here .

If want to keep exploring Perth, we recommend catching another free ride on a CAT bus north of the CBD to the Northbridge district.

#15 Northbridge, Perth

Northbridge, Perth, Australia

Northbridge is a multicultural enclave that features modern art museums and international eateries, which makes visiting the neighborhood another one of the fun things to do in Perth. However, we went to Northbridge in search of craft beer.

Northbridge Brewing, Perth, Australia

Specifically, we went to check out Northbridge Brewing Company (oh, how we love the Craft Beer in Australia !) The Northbridge Brewing Co. is responsible for the award-winning Beerland brews and they have a fantastic food menu as well, with the pizzas getting high marks. Read reviews!

Popular (not free) tours in Perth and surrounding areas

Perth guide.

Despite being one of (if not the most) remote city in the world, the capital of Western Australia is a tantalising prospect to visit.

Perth is shaped by the beautiful scenery of the urban landscape, views at the Botanic Gardens on Mt Eliza, vast beaches, modern buildings and architecture and glittering ocean.

Take in the relaxed, down to earth Aussie way of life, a sophisticated dining and bar/cafe scene or a night out in the city. Perth is home to several popular art galleries and museums including The Western Australia Museum.

Whether you explore Perth on your own, or take a guided tour, you will likely come across some of these Western Australian gems on your tour:

Kings Park and Botanic Garden

The Western Australia Museum

Elizabeth Quay

Fremantle Prison

Cottesloe Beach

Perth Cultural Centre

Bell Tower (Swan Bells)

The Round House

His Majesty's Theatre

Optus Stadium

Western Australian Maritime Museum

Scarborough Beach

And this is all just in Perth. Wait till you see all the incredible adventures that await you just outside this isolated yet amazing capital.

Some of the tours of Perth are listed as free, what does this mean? The free tours listed generally operate on the rule that they have no upfront cost. Some tours may work on a tips only basis where if you like the tour, you can pay your guide how much the tour was worth to you at the end.

Didn't like it? There should be no obligations to pay anything.

Do check the details on their respective websites as the tours listed here are not run by Buddy Free Walking Tours.

Copy my trip: Sandboarding, festivals and epic sunsets in Western Australia

Jessica Lockhart

Apr 4, 2024 • 5 min read

perth australia walking tour

Sandboarding at Lancelin Sand Dunes © Jessica Lockhart

Lonely Planet Destination Editor Jessica Lockhart went to Western Australia for the wildflowers, but was won over by Perth’s immersive Indigenous experiences, stunning scenery and innovative culinary scene. Here, she shares how she spent her week — and why Perth is perfect at any time of year.

Since moving to Australia from Canada in 2015, I’ve dedicated the better part of the last decade to exploring some of the country’s most remote corners – from the rugged peaks of Flinders Island to the Torres Strait Islands. Yet, somehow, I’d never been to Perth /Boorloo. So when Tourism Western Australia invited me for a visit, I jumped at the opportunity.

My visit coincided with Perth’s inaugural EverNow Festival, which celebrates the arrival of Kambarang—one of the six seasons in Indigenous Noongar culture. Typically lasting from October to November, Kambarang is when Perth’s coastlines, wetlands, and forests start to erupt in riotous color. One of the largest displays of blooming wildflowers on Earth, Western Australia has some 12,000 native flower species, 60% of which are endemic.

While I was fortunate to see this incredible display of biodiversity, I also discovered that the thriving coastal city is worth visiting any time of year. It might have been my first trip to Perth, but it certainly won’t be my last.

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

I checked into  Warders Hotel , a boutique hotel directly beside the historic Fremantle Markets. Originally built in 1851 as accommodation for the Fremantle Prison’s Warders (prison guards), the carefully preserved limestone cottages have plush beds, marble bathrooms, contemporary artwork and an aperitivo bar for good measure. Soundproofing makes the rooms an oasis of calm despite being within walking distance from the South Terrace’s restaurants and the ferry to Wadjemup/Rottnest Island . But if I’m being honest, it was the in-room sparkling water on tap that won me over. (It’s really the simple things, folks.)

Song Circle performing on stage at the EverNow Festival in Perth

Favorite activity from the trip?

“Ethereal,” “immersive” and “memorable” might sound like marketing jargon, but they’re the words I keep coming back to when I try to describe the brand-new EverNow Festival.

Held annually in October, it’s an opportunity to engage with First Nations culture in an entirely new way. Rather than overwhelming its attendees with a huge program, EverNow curated its content to feature three hero events: SongCircle (a contemporary Indigenous dance performance with music by Maatakitj ), Fire Gardens (a fiery kinetic display of 7,000 giant candles) and Boorna Waanginy: The Trees Speak (a journey through Kings Park , where the trees were used as a canvas for digital light projections).

A First Nations cultural performance outside Boola Bardip

What was the most under-the-radar activity you enjoyed?

Even if you don’t manage to make it to Perth in time for EverNow Festival, there are countless ways to learn from and engage with the Traditional Custodians of the land. For example, every Saturday at 11am, you can watch Noongar performers outside the WA Museum Boola Bardip for free.

One of my favorite experiences, though, was an art workshop in Kings Park led by Wadjuk man Justin Martin of Djurandi Dreaming . After a short tour of the park, he busted out the paint and canvases. Then, we sat in the grass and got down to business, using linework traditionally found in Aboriginal artwork to paint animals of significance to us. As I sketched out a fish, Martin shared stories of his people, explaining that “moieties” (spirit animals) like the ones we were drawing are given to individuals by Elders based on their characteristics.

A group of tourists take photos at The Pinnacles at sunset

What was the most scenic experience of the trip?

The Pinnacles, located within Nambung National Park, is a solid 2.5-hour drive north of Perth, but if you’re going to make a one-day trip from the city, make it this one. Almost alien in nature, these towering limestone structures—believed to be around 30,000 years old—seem to stretch beyond where your sight ends. Add some emus and kangaroos to the scene, and it’s a quintessentially Western Australia moment.

The best time to visit is at sunset when "magic hour" transforms the desert into a landscape of golden hues and long dark shadows before unveiling an unfiltered night sky. Pair it with an astrophotography session (like that offered by Lumineer Adventure Tours ), and you’ll walk away with some of the best photos from your trip.

It’s a long day, but seeing wildflowers and sandboarding at the Lancelin Sand Dunes en route helped keep the energy levels high.

A beaming young woman samples gin at Old Young's Distillery

Best thing you ate?

Do I have to pick just one thing? Because every single thing that Dale Tilbrook handed me delighted and challenged my tastebuds. The Wardandi Bibbulmun woman is widely considered the “bush tucker queen,” with unparalleled knowledge of Australia’s native foods. She’s even collaborated with other makers in the region, including with nearby Old Young’s Distillery to develop its Six Seasons Gin.

During approachable two-hour tastings in her Swan Valley art gallery, visitors get a chance to sample everything from quandongs (a sour desert fruit with notes of peach) to Geraldton wax (a zesty evergreen and one of WA’s famed wildflowers).

Tasting the raw ingredients also gave me a better appreciation for my six-course degustation at Wildflower . The Perth restaurant changes its tasting menus based on the six Noongar seasons, with foraged native ingredients like warrigal greens, desert lime and line-caught fish taking center stage.

A group of people in harnesses at Optus Stadium in Perth

What was the most touristy thing you did?

Bridge climbs might be all the rage (we’re looking at you, Sydney Harbour Bridge ), but Perth has its own adrenaline offering: Climbing atop the 60,000-seat Optus Stadium, which was named “the most beautiful stadium in the world” by the prestigious Prix Versailles for Sports.

It’s hard to admire all that beauty, though, when you’re peeing your pants as you dangle on a gangway 140 feet (42 meters) above the ground. I’m told this terrifying ordeal is supposed to be the selling point of the Ozone’s Vertigo experience. Uh, yeah, no thanks.

It turns out this wasn’t my jam (much to the amusement of everyone else on the tour) – but I’ll concede that the incredible views of the city and over the Swan River are unmatched. It also wins bonus points for being fully accessible to wheelchair users and those with limited mobility.

Next time, though? I’ll be packing an extra set of undies.

Jessica Lockhart visited Perth at the invitation of Tourism Western Australia. Lonely Planet does not accept freebies in exchange for positive coverage.

A freak storm after one of the city’s longest droughts sparked flash flooding, causing people to become trapped as their cars became submerged.

Freak storm causes flooding, shopping centre collapse in Perth

At the Ocean Keys shopping centre in the city’s north residents were panicked to see water flowing from the ceiling before tiles and debris fell to the floor.

In one video of the moment shoppers can be heard gasping as one woman shouts “oh my God”.

Other parts of the city were battered with hail stones as videos of people wading through knee deep water emerged online.

Shoppers watched on in horror as a the ceiling of a shopping centre collapsed in Perth on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to rescue people 45 who had become stranded by the torrential downpour with that number expected to rise.

Joey Rawson, from the Bureau of Meteorology, said the freak storm dumped more than 130 millimetres of rain in the city’s northern suburbs.

He added that the storm had expected to stay off the coast but had drifted inland with devastating effect.

The Bureau only issued a warning as the storm hit leaving many people unprepared.

“That caused a bit of havoc in the northern suburbs,” he told the ABC .

Roads around the suburbs of Clarkson and Butler are thought to be worst hit.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said they received more than 40 calls from people who had become trapped by the flooding.

“I’ve been doing this job a long time [and] 100 millimetres in under an hour in the metro metropolitan area is fairly unprecedented,” he said.

“And I won’t say it certainly caught us unawares, and we’ve responded accordingly, but certainly without [getting] any notification is unusual.”

Authorities are testing for a deadly brain-eating amoeba at a popular swimming spot with locals warned to stay away.

The ex-treasurer has slammed Australia’s chief productivity adviser who was hand-picked by his own former chief of staff, Jim Chalmers.

A shocking new forecast has emerged for the coming months as meteorologists warn a record is likely to be broken.
