  • OuterBanks_NCBigAl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Incredible group gourmet meals in your home The Phoenix Palate was not only a life-saver, but an incredible experience we would have chosen in the first place had we known about them. As 60-somethings, we (Cindy and Alex) had planned a small wedding with a group of close friends and family in Scottsdale, AZ. We rented a fabulous vacation home for the 13 of us. We love cooking so made sure the kitchen was conducive to great meal preparation. We had lined up a well-known local Chef 8 months in advance. The week prior to the wedding, he came down with Covid…Oh Great! We asked advice from our outstanding balloon and wedding planners , Rainbow Ryders. They recommended The Phoenix Palate. From first contact with owner Alexis Armijo, they stood out as a professional and caring operation. Utilizing multiple chefs on their staff, they were quick to respond to our last-minute dilemma. We had 3 meals planned for private chefs. We shared our desired menus from which they made excellent suggestions. Our 3 meals included an arrival day heavy hors d’oeuvre dinner/cocktail hour. Alexis accompanied her chosen chef, Riannon, for the evening. Oxtail empanadas, Peruvian shrimp, scallop caprese, filet bites…..Perfect! The next day was our Wedding Day dinner. A different but equally creative and inspiring Chef Shawnee, prepared an amazing feast, fit for our special day. Scallop crudo, grilled wedge salad, lamb lollipops and poached lobster tail, yummy sides and more. Our final chef-dinner was our planned Cooking Class. Donned with chef hats and aprons, a festive, fun, and delicious evening ensued…alcohol may have been involved to loosen us up. The chef put us into 3 Teams for different parts of the meal. She instructed us well and a magnificent meal was created by all of us. Poached Pear salad, sautéed duck breast with parsnips puree, and mini chocolate lava cakes finished us off. Chef Shawnee was again cordial, fun, creative, and inspired us all. Complete clean-up was included with all meals. Our compliments and appreciation to Alexis, her chefs, and professional organization. If you’re looking for a private chef meal at your own home, The Phoenix Palate will likely exceed your expectations. Read more Written September 25, 2021
  • heidster12 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Tour Cancelled with No Knowledge of Change I was in Phoenix for my bachelorette party and this was one of the items on the agenda for our last night in town. We walked the 15 minutes to the meetup destination for the tour in 106 degree heat and arrived early as the tour suggested. After several minutes of nobody arriving, I called the phone number on my ticket confirmation and was told that all of the tours have been cancelled and I should not have been able to book one. Not only were we unable to partake in the tour, but we were unable to schedule anything else for the evening (as we wanted to do a haunted tour as well) because this one was supposed to last 2.5 hours and interfered with all of the other tour times. The lady on the phone was very nice and sympathetic to our situation after telling us it was cancelled, but did not offer to make it right it anyway, which I found heart wrenching, especially since it was a special once-in-a-lifetime weekend and did not allow us to book anything else for our last night in town. Interested in knowing more about Arizona’s beer scene? Hop on the bus with Arizona Brewery Tours ( 480.382.4677, www.azbrew.com ) to see and taste behind-the-scenes in area breweries, from Scottsdale to Phoenix to Chandler. Choose a full HOP’on Tour for 4-5 hours, where you will sample craft beers, tour behind the scenes, learn about making beer, and savor local foods. You can also book the public tour that visits three craft breweries or arrange a private tour and choose your own time and pickup location. If you are short on time, book the Short HOP’n brewery tour of 2.5 to 3.5 hours, where you’ll visit two select local breweries. You can pair your visit with a meal or light appetizers. Founders Hoppymoto and Johnny Boi are two Phoenix locals with a passion for beer. They love sharing stories and secrets of the beer industry with everyone in their quest for the perfect beer.

Dig up the history and roots of Phoenix on the Historic Downtown Phoenix Food Tour with Taste It Tours ( 480.274.3569, www.tasteittours.com ). Offered every Saturday from October through May, you’ll experience the hot Phoenix food scene at five different local eateries. The Roosevelt Row Day tour explores the colorful Phoenix art district every Sunday afternoon, featuring bites from fresh market cuisine to gourmet hot dogs. If you prefer an evening tour, book either a Scottsdale Dinner Foodie Feast to visit Downtown Scottsdale’s culinary gems, or the Phoenix Evening Dine Around, where you’ll have a chance to sample paired cocktails. The Downtown Gilbert Food Tour showcases the growing East Valley food scene with stops at six spots, from Mexican street tacos to Asian fusion.

Get in on the party action when you book the Arizona Party Bike ( 844.654.5544, www.aarizonapartybike.com ). Climb onboard the party pub bike—don’t worry, there’s an electric motor so you don’t have to do all the work—and let the fun begin. Take a 2-hour pub crawl through Old Town Scottsdale, downtown Phoenix or along Mill Avenue in Tempe, where you’ll imbibe at some of the Valley’s favorite watering spots. If you prefer a BYOB experience, book a tour with Tour De Tavern ( 480.299.4182, tourdetavern.com ) in Scottsdale. Take a 2- or 3-hour trip through downtown and enjoy your own wine or beer as you take in local sights and enjoy stops at local pubs/bars. You’ll pedal as you go, gearing up to a top speed of 5-8 mph. Again, a driver is in charge of steering and braking.

Originally a public park, it was redeveloped into a mixed-use complex in 2008. On the second floor of the east building above Charming Charlie, you’ll find the Downtown Information Center with everything from restaurant menus and coupons to maps and business directories. In addition to a host of visitor resources, there’s always an Ambassador at the welcome desk to answer questions.

2. Luhrs Building & Tower

Luhrs Building Phoenix

Built in the 1920s, the L-shaped Beaux-Arts building (1924) and the attached 14-story Art Deco tower (1929) represent beautiful examples of historic Phoenix architecture. On the ground floor, be sure to check out Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour — named one of  America’s best bars by the Food Network in 2016 — Monroe’s Hot Chicken or la Madeleine French Bakery & Café.

3. Maricopa County Courthouse / Historic City Hall

Historic City Hall Phoenix

This building served as Phoenix’s City Hall from 1929 until 1994, and is now home to the Phoenix Police Museum (first floor) and the Maricopa County Justice Museum and Learning Center (sixth floor). Completed in 1994, the Employee Memorial fountain, Gallery @ City Hall and a shady outdoor courtyard make this a nice stop along the tour.

5. The Orpheum Theatre

Orpheum Theatre Phoenix

In 1984, the City of Phoenix purchased this historic theater after it fell into disrepair, beginning a 12-year restoration project. Built in 1929, free tours take place on alternating Tuesdays. The Wells Fargo History Museum (also free) is located just steps away on Second Avenue and Adams Street.

In addition to great ground-floor bars and restaurants, be sure to the check out the Hollywood-style “Star Walk,” which wraps around the hotel. It was created in 1993 to commemorate the hotel’s 65th birthday and memorialize the celebrities who stayed here over the years. There are also some great ground-floor bars and restaurants including Centrico Cocina Mexicana and Seamus McCaffrey’s Irish Pub and Restaurant.

8. Heard Building

phoenix walking food tour

Built in 1920, it was the tallest structure in Arizona upon completion. Remodeled in 2015, it’s now a hotspot for small tech companies and startups, offering some great ground-floor restaurants. 9. Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Downtown Hotel

Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix

Formerly known as the Professional Building, it was built in 1932 to house the growing Valley National Bank. It was carefully restored in 2015 featuring the original Art Deco design, a grand lobby, columns and marble touches. Before you leave, be sure to ride the elevator up to the Floor 13 rooftop bar, which features breathtaking views of the Phoenix skyline.

10. Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel

Renaissance Hotel

The historic Adams Hotel was built on this site in 1896, rebuilt after a fire in 1910, razed in 1973, and reconstructed as a modern hotel in 1975. In the alley behind the Renaissance, you’ll find a colorful 70-foot mural based on the hotel’s storied past.

11. Hanny’s

Hannys Restaurant Bar

Now a bar and restaurant, this clothing store was the ultimate place to go for men’s fashion between 1947 to 1986. Located just down the street, the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center (ALAC) offers free admission and a great gift shop.

12. Phoenix Convention Center

13. Herberger Theater Center

Herberger Theater

Three stages and an acclaimed resident dance ensemble and theater troupe make the Herberger (built in 1989) an excellent place to catch a live performance. The outdoor sculpture series, “Dance” by John Waddell, also adds beauty and interest to the exterior.

14. St. Mary’s Basilica

About Arizona Food Tours

Welcome to Arizona's Original Food Tour! As the first company in the state of Arizona to begin offering food tours, we have been showcasing Scottsdale's renowned culinary scene since 2009. We've received the Trip Advisor Award of Excellence for 14 consecutive years, ranked by USA Today as the #5 food tour in the nation, and the FlipKey award for top-rated food tour in Arizona. We got started on the simple idea, that when food, wine, culture, history, and people combine, something very exciting is born!

We work with premier locally owned restaurants, saloons, wineries, breweries, and specialty shops, all of whom partner exclusively with Arizona Food Tours. Along with signature food and drink tastings, guests receive an inside look while walking around Old Town Scottsdale and its variety of dining options. Our tour guides highlight things to do in the area, local history and most importantly all that goes into Scottsdale being the premier foodie destination in the Phoenix area!

Managing Partner/ Operations Manager

Hard to believe we are now in our 15th year on the local food tour scene!

When Arizona Food Tours was created in 2009 by my close friend Annie Hartley, I eagerly volunteered my services to help in any way possible with her initial venture into the world of food tours in Arizona.

My first ever job was working in a restaurant at age 14, and I’d continued in the path of hospitality with my jobs throughout college.  When I moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2004 and my attempt at a career in marketing didn’t fully come into fruition, I immediately gravitated to the immense opportunities within the field of hospitality in the area.

Living in Scottsdale and working at the time as the Dining Room Captain at Sushi Roku inside the W Hotel, I found Annie’s idea of starting a food tour in Scottsdale incredibly appealing.  Between our intricate knowledge of restaurants and connections within the local dining scene, and an appreciation for diverse cuisines combined with our passion for service, I knew we had the right recipe for success.

Initially I was able to help as a part-time tour director and continued as such for the first 2 years. In 2011 I was blessed with the chance to turn my job at Arizona Food Tours into a full-time position, partnering with Annie, and helping to create more opportunities to expand our tour services.

In 2020, I took over the lead role for the company and all its operations, but still to this day my favorite part of the job is giving the tours.  It always will be.  The satisfaction from happy guests with a smile and a full belly, is a simple yet most beautiful reward for all the hard work.

Hope to see you soon and happy eating everybody!!
