At a distance of 116 km from Gulbarga, 639 km Bangalore and 140 km from Hyderabad, Bidar is a town and district headquarters located in the north-eastern part of Karnataka. Bidar is one of the most popular tourist places to visit near Hyderabad and one of the famous Hyderabad weekend getaways from a two day trip. It is lies at an altitude of 2,200 feet on Deccan plateau overlooking the Manjira river valley. Bidar is among the well known Karnataka tourist places . It is bounded by Nizamabad and Medak districts of Telangana on the eastern side, Latur and Osmanabad districts of Maharashtra on the western side, Nanded district of Maharashtra on the northern side and Gulbarga district on southern side. Bidar has great historical importance and it is one of the important heritage sites in Karnataka. The history of Bidar goes back to 3rd century BC, and it was ruled by Mauryas, Satavahanas, Kadambas and Chalukyas of Badami, Rashtrakutas and later Kalyani Chalukyas. For a short period after Kalyani Chalukyas Bidar was under the Yadavas of Devgiri and Kakatiyas of Warangal . Delhi rulers first headed by Allauddin Khilji and later Muhammed-bin-Tughluq took control of entire Deccan including Bidar. In the middle of the 14th century, the Deccan region disintegrated and formed the Bahmani Sultanate in 1347 AD under the rule of Bahman Shah. The Bahamani kingdom shifted their kingdom from Gulbarga to Bidar in the year 1429. In 1430, Ahmed Shah Wali Bahmani took steps to develop the city of Bidar and its fort was rebuilt. After break up of Bahamani Kingdom in 1527 AD, the city became capital of Barid Shahis who ruled up to 1619 AD. In the mid 17th century, when Aurangzeb conquered Deccan, Bidar became part of the Mughal Empire. The Nizam rulers of Hyderabad took over Bidar in the early part of the 18th century. It became part of the unified Mysore state in 1956, when all the states were reorganized on the basis of language. Bidar has a number of historical monuments dating back to 15th century. These monuments reflect the glory of the Bahamani rulers. The main tourist attraction of Bidar is the Fort, which was built by Ahmad Shah in 1430. The Rangin Mahal, Solah Kambh Masjid, Gagan Mahal, Diwan-e-Am, Royal Pavilion, Tarkash Mahal are other important places to be seen within the fort. Tombs of Bahmani Rulers, Tombs of the Barid Shahis, Madrassa of Mahmud Gawan, Chaubara, Guru Nank Basavakalyan, Humnabad, Narasimha Jharniand papnash temple are the other attractions in Bidar. Bidar is known for its unique Bidri handicraft products. The name of Bidar appears to be derived from Biduru which means bamboo. The initial Bidar Fort is considered to have been built during the reign of the Western Chalukya dynasty which was established in 977 AD at Kalyani. Subsequently, it was captured by the Yadava dynasty of Devagiri and fell yet again to the Kakatiyas of Warangal. Bidar Fort: Amongst the most formidable forts of the country, it is situated in the eastern part of the town and has within it ruins of palaces, mosques and other buildings which had been built of trap rock. Stone and mortar were used to build the fort-walls. The fort is entered from the south-east by a zigzag passage protected by three gateways. The entrance gate has a lofty dome, the interior of which had been painted in bright colours.

History of Bidar : Bidar was the capital of Bahmani Kingdom in the 14 th century. Thisfort was built by Ahmad Shah Wali Bahman. The Fort was renovated in the 15th century by Sultan Ahmad Shah-I as he shifted his capital from Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) to Bidar.

1. Bidar Fort

Standing tall and full of history, the Bidar Fort is a testament to architectural brilliance. The Bidar Fort is one of the most popular tourist spots in not just in Bidar but in entire Karnataka. This majestic fort gives you a sneak peek at the rich past of India and the great South Indian dynasties that ruled over the whole of the Deccan region. Today, even though the fort is deserted, there are over 30 awe-inspiring structures inside the fort walls. With its massive fortifications, bastions, moats, and the colorful royal museums and palaces, Bidar Fort is the first place you should visit. Entry to the fort is free of cost, and you can take as many pictures as you want to truly capture the beautiful experience of this historical place.

Though the actual origin of the Bidar Fort is not known, it is believed that the fort witnessed a period of great prosperity during the Middle Ages as Bidar was the capital and seat of the Bahamani Dynasty. The magnificent fort is known to have a colorful past, and it saw the rise and fall of many ruling dynasties of South India, including the Satvahanas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Rashtrakutas, and the Yadavas. After this, the fort is said to have fallen into the hands of the Sultanates, Mughals, Nizams, and many others.

Some of the major attractions inside the Bidar Fort include:

• Rangeen Mahal: This complex is a colorful palace that Muhammad Shah built in the early 16th century. Ornate tiles of various colors adorn the walls of this palace. The Rangeen Mahal was constructed as a safe enclosure for the royal family, but it was also used as a summer palace, as can be concluded by the presence of many baths, water tanks, and underground rooms. Ali Barid later decorated this palace with mother of pearl engravings on wood and black granite. There is also a museum located just opposite to this structure that is home to many artifacts and remnants of the past.
• The Mahals: Located south of the Lal Bagh is the Tarkash Mahal that was built for the Turkish wife of a Bahamani ruler of Bidar. It was constructed during the 14th-15th century, during the same era when the Gagan Mahal was also built. The Gagan Mahal is known for the lustrous beauty and security that it provided to the royalty. Together, these two structures are referred to as The Mahals. Gagan Mahal is believed to have been used as the residential complex for the royal family in the inner part of the fort, while staff used to reside on the outer part.
• Solah Khamba Mosque: This 16 pillared mosque is a masterpiece constructed by Quail Sultani in 1423-1424 AD. With a beautifully made central dome above the long arches and the famous 16 pillars of its prayer chamber, this place of worship is said to have been used by Emperor Aurangzeb himself on his visits to the Deccan region. Though visitors are not allowed to see the inner parts of the mosque, but the building and the magnificent rectangular garden known as Lal Bagh are both splendid sights to check out.

Over the years, the Bidar Fort has undergone many renovations and development to maintain its constructional beauty.

2. Narasimha Jhira Cave Temple

Though the description sounds spooky, the place is sure to leave you spellbound and enchanted as you experience the spiritual aura inside the cave. The inner sanctum sanctorum of the cave where the deity resides can only accommodate around eight people at one time, which is why only a few people are allowed at one time. The Sanctum Sanctorum houses two deities – Lord Narasimha and a Shiva Linga, which is believed to have been worshipped by the demon Jalasura himself. Even to have a glimpse of the deity, you have to stand in water height that varies from four to five feet. The deity’s image forms on the laterite wall at the end of the tunnel, which is known as an architectural wonder in itself.

This ancient temple was excavated under the Manichoola Hills, and the entire tunnel system is nearly 300 meters long. The temple is located around five kilometers from the city. Since the water keeps on flowing continuously and hundreds of people walk through it, the water is not that clean. However, the water is said to contain sulfur in it and is believed to have healing properties, especially for people who have skin problems. If you are going with children, you can carry them on your shoulder.

There is a separate facility for changing rooms at the temple complex since the cave system requires devotees to wade through the water.

3. Bahamani Tombs

The complex of Bahamani Tombs is made up of 12 tombs that are today considered to be architectural marvels. Located at Ashtur in the city of Bidar, these tombs are home to many Bahamani rulers. One of the tombs belongs to the ninth ruler of Bidar, Ahmed Shah Alwali Bahamani. This is one of the more fascinating tombs you will see in the complex. On the interior of this tomb, you will find a beautiful range of bright colors. The tomb is further adorned with elaborate floral designs and calligraphy to give a mesmerizing look. Many beautiful paintings grace the wall, and there are engravings of verses from the Quran.

One surprising element you will find at the mausoleum is the presence of the swastika symbol. There’s no need to be surprised by this because Ahmad Shah was known to be a liberal ruler who believed in granting equality to all religions. The tombs of Ahmed Shah’s wife and sons are also a part of the Bahamani Tombs.

4. Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib

Another beautiful place you should visit in Bidar is the Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib, dedicated to the first Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Built in 1948, the gurudwara is an important pilgrimage site for Sikhs from all over the country. The beauty of this gurudwara offers a sense of peace to the devotees who come here. This shrine is located in the heart of a valley and is surrounded by laterite hills on three sides. The gurudwara is home to the Diwan Hall, Darbar Sahib, Langar Hall, and the Sukhasan room that houses the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the holy book of the Sikhs.

5. Mahmud Gawan Madrasa

The Mahmud Gawan Madrasa is located in the older part of Bidar city. Today, the Mahmud Gawan Madrasa is only the remains of a building that once used to be a famous theological college. It is considered to be amongst one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Bidar.

Constructed by a Persian merchant by the name of Khwaja Mahmud Gawawn in 1472, the madrasa is a popular tourist spot in Bidar. The building has been constructed over three levels, with 100 feet minarets placed in four corners and adorned with calligraphy in the rare Thuluth script. There is intricate tile work done inside, and you will find verses inscribed from the Quran.

In the earlier days, the madrasa not only featured a mosque, but also a large library, lecture halls, a laboratory, and there were 36 rooms for students and six suites for the teachers.

Bidar in the state of Karnataka was part of the esrtwhile Hyderabad state ruled by Nizams and preceded by the Mauryas, Bahamanis and Mughals. It is located around 125 kms from Hyderabad and a nice weekend getaway. There are a few places to visit in Bidar like Bidar fort, Gurudwara, Narasimha swamy temple.

Bidar fort was built by Bahamani dynasty in Persian architectural style and was mainly expanded by Shihabuddin Ahmad Shah between 1422 and 1436 CE who moved the capital from Gulbarga to Bidar. He built mosques, madrasas and gardens within the fort. It was taken over by Barid Shahi rulers after that and Rangin Mahal well known for its wooden carvings and tile work was built by Ali Barid(1543-1580 CE) and the fort flourished in the field of art and architecture.

Bidar Gurudwara also called Guru Nanak Jhira is one of the holiest places for Sikhs. As per belief Lord Guru Nanak visited this place when there was a huge shortage of water. A stream of clear water burst out from the hillside and quenched the thirst. Even today, water which is said to have healing powers, flows through this fountain and is accumulated in Amrit Khund(built in White Marble).

Bidar Narasimha Swamy temple, also known as the Narasimha Jharni temple is a cave temple where pilgrims will have to walk their way in 4-5 feet deep water through a cave for around 300 m to worship Lord Narasimha. The temple is at a lower level in the slopes of a hilly terrain.

Narasimha Jhira Cave Temple

The cave temple is more than 400 years old and it is a good example of Malla-style architecture. It is located on the outskirts of Bidar, which is famous for Bidri Pottery.

This temple is dedicated to Narasimha, a man-lion avatara of Lord Vishnu. The deity is worshiped by the Lingayat community. 

Chaubara Clock Tower

While the tombs are known for their intricate architecture and carvings, the modern-day tomb is indistinguishable from a mosque. No interior photos are allowed of the actual tombs themselves, so I use this photo as a substitute. 

Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib

It is a prominent Sikh shrine located in Bidar. It is dedicated to the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who is believed to have visited the place during his travels in the 16th century.

The name “Nanak Jhira Sahib” literally means “the spring of Nanak”. According to legend, when Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived in Bidar, the area was facing a severe drought and people were suffering from a shortage of water.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in his benevolent and compassionate nature, used his divine powers to dig a well and provide water. The well, which is believed to be the same one dug by Guru Nanak still exists inside the Gurudwara complex and is known as “Nanak Jhira”

Mahmud Gawan Madrasa

Mahmud Gawan Madrasa is a historic Islamic seminary built in the 15th century. The madrasa is known for its beautiful architecture, which was designed by the famous architect, Muhammad Musa of Tabriz. Heavily influenced by Persian architectural designs, it is a blend of the Persian and Timurid styles.

The blue-tiled dome of the madrasa is one of its most defining features. There are numerous libraries in the madrasa and the interior of the main prayer hall is a mix of the Persian and Timurid styles and is adorned by exquisite mirror work.

The surrounding courtyard is flanked by several geometrically designed corridors. The madrasa is a great example of the harmony which existed in the Islamic world between the different periods and styles.

Karanja Dam

karanja Irrigation Project is located near Byalhalli village in Bhalki taluk of Bidar district across Karanja River, a tributary of river Manjra, in Godavari basin. It has Canals on both right and left banks. Total length of RBC is 131 km and that of LBC is 31 km. The project envisages irrigation to an area of 29227 hectare (CCA) in Bhalki and Bidar taluks from its two canals on right and left banks and foreshore and offshore lift irrigation schems.

Papnash Shiva Temple at Bidar

As per the local traditional saying, the Shiva Linga idol in this temple is one of those installed by Shri RAM during the time of his journey back from Lanka.
