12 Beautiful Costa Brava Towns

Emmie Declerck

2. Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar is that rare town where you can simultaneously watch the Mediterranean waves and get a charming view of medieval history — without even turning your head.

In fact, Tossa de Mar is the last fortified medieval town on the Costa Brava . Take a stroll around and you’ll find that behind its tall walls are thriving restaurants, charming cobblestone pedestrian streets and breathtaking views of the Costa Brava.

Its main beach, Platja Gran, is dotted with colorful boats and sun seekers, especially in the summer. It is presided by the medieval fortress of the old town, a truly unique and picturesque sight!

3. Cadaqués

Cadaques, Costa Brava

It was this white village with its gorgeous surroundings that inspired the famous artist Salvador Dalí. Cadaqués still has a sophisticated yet bohemian ambience today, along with a vibrant cultural life with festive events all year through.

Cadaqués also has a fascinating history, reflected in its architecture. It is home to the famous Casa-Museo de Salvador Dalí (House-Museum of Salvador Dalí) and some nice modernist buildings.  Its old town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, bright white buildings and blue details.

For holidaymakers,  Cadaqués is a lively seaside town  full of shops, restaurants with great local dishes and craft workshops where the hours spent exploring will fly by. And of course there are the magical beach coves of the Cabo de Creus Natural Park, where you can swim in cristalline waters or hike along routes with stunning panoramic views.

4. Calella de Palafrugell

Calella de Palafrugell, Costa Brava

Calella de Palafrugell is a small village in the region of Bajo Ampurdián on the Costa Brava. With its white houses, narrow streets, wooden boats on the beach and lovely little coves, Calella possesses a magical atmosphere. Port Bo, the harbour neighbourhood of Calella de Palafrugell, has even been declared a site of Cultural Heritage of National Importance.

There are some real must-sees too in the surroundings, such as the botanical garden and castle of Cap Roig and the Iberian village San Sebastián de la Guarda. If you are looking for some well-deserved relaxation, the beaches of Calella are your best bet. There are also plenty of fiestas and events to keep you entertained throughout the year.  Visit this fairy tale-like town and experience an unforgettable holiday !

Blanes, Costa Brava

Ajuntament de Blanes

The former fisherman's village of Blanes should be high on your list. It has gorgeous beaches and rocky coves, nice churches, a lovely old town, a pleasant beach promenade, impressive monuments or landmarks and plenty of restaurants and bars. It also has one of the few fishing ports on the Costa Brava that are still active and a relaxed atmosphere, great for families. It was even officially recognised as a family holiday destination, thanks to its great services and facilities for children.

If you decide to visit Blanes during your holiday , you will be able to see and enjoy the best botanical gardens in Europe. You can also climb the San Juan hill ('Sant Joan' in Catalan) to the castle of the same name, for a spectacular view over Blanes and its coastline.

If you decide to stay in Blanes , you will have several beaches and coves to choose from, where you can relax in the sun or enjoy all kinds of activities. In summer, Blanes hosts the biggest International Fireworks Festival of the Costa Brava and one of the most important in Europe.

Canyelles Petites beach, Roses, Costa Brava

Another beautiful Mediterranean town is Roses. It has a rich historical heritage and a unique location. Roses is an attractive holiday destination , surrounded by the most amazing beaches and natural parks.

The most famous and visited monument in Roses is the massive La Ciudadela, a pentagonal military fortress which dates back to the 11th century. Inside the fortress, archaeological sites of Greek, Roman and Visigothic settlements have been found. The Citadel of Roses even hosts a series of concerts that are part of the famous Festival Sons del Mon every summer. An unforgettable event!

Trinidad Castle is a Renaissance fortification built in the sixteenth century, on top of an old hermitage at the Poncella tip, right at the entrance of the incredibly beautiful Bay of Roses.

More natural beauty can be found in the two important natural parks of Catalonia around Roses: Aiguamolls del Empordà (Marismas del Ampurdán) and the Cabo de Creus park. They offer visitors great hiking routes, picturesque beach coves and an important megalithic complex of dolmens, among others.

7. L'Escala

Cala Montgó - L'Escala

The coastal town of L'Escala offers a wide variety of culturally enriching activities, traditional festivals, natural reserves and of course, excellent beaches. The Gulf of Roses is its main beach area - a beautiful bay with calm waters, surrounded by mountains. L'Escala is also known for the cute statue of the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry on the beach promenade.

The town's biggest cultural attraction is the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia, which shows the remains of a Greek commercial port from the beginning of western civilization, as well as a Roman forum that was the centre of the ancient citadel. On one of its beaches, Moll Grec, you will even have the opportunity to swim next to ancient Greek and Roman ruins. In L'Escala you can enjoy a truly amazing mix of culture and holiday activities in the sun!

More cultural and gastronomic experiences in L'Escala  include the Anchovy Festival and the Festival of Arts and Culture of Portalblau. Or you can go on a day trip to the nearby medieval village of Sant Martí d'Empuriés. Or cycle along the Fluviá river. Plenty of possibilities!

8. L'Estartit

Platja Gran, L’Estartit, Costa Brava

The small beach town of L'Estartit is the easternmost point of Spain. Nestled between the Montgrí Massif mountains and the Mediterranean, it is one of those places where you can both relax on the beach and explore the best natural surroundings, such as the Natural Park of Montgrí, Baix Ter and the Medes Islands. Or how about visiting nearby medieval villages such as Pals?

L'Estartit also offers visitors a wide variety of popular festivities , restaurants, bars with terraces and a nice beach promenade to enjoy the summer evenings. It has actually won the prestigious Family Holiday Label, attributed by the Catalan Tourist Board (ACT), and so it is a great holiday destination for families.

9. Figueres

Teatro-Museo Dalí, Figueres, Costa Brava

Apart from Cadaqués, Figueres is the town which attracts the most 'Dalí-visitors ', as its former theatre, el Teatro de Figueres , was chosen by Dalí to house his prestigious and quite incredible museum. The Torre Gorgot is part of it and the only tower that was left from its medieval walls. The old town still houses some other historical landmarks, such as the medieval Plaza del Ayuntamiento square and the Iglesia Sant Pere church. Part of the old Jewish quarter has been preserved as well.

Just 800 meters from the Dalí Museum, in the Bay of Roses, you can also visit the biggest monument of Catalonia and one of the biggest military fortresses in Europe. The San Fernando Castle (Castell de Sant Ferran) covers no fewer than 32 hectares.

Figueres is the capital of the Alto Ampurdián and hosts some important festivals, several of which are related to the wine of the Empordà region.

10. Girona

Girona view

The town with one of the main airports for the Costa Brava, Girona, is more than worth visiting . You probably know the picture postcard of the view across the river of the lovely pastel colours of the Casas de l'Onyar. Its enchanting old town holds many more treasures!

Walk along its ancient fortress walls with breathtaking views, lose yourself in the splendor of the wonderfully preserved Jewish Quarter, marvel at the Arab baths dating back to the 11th and 12th century, tour the numerous historic landmarks. The impressive Cathedral of Girona certainly stands out. Its Gothic-style nave is the widest in the world! The Placa de la Catedral is also a glorious sight, with a massive staircase that leads up to it. No wonder the sixth season of Games of Thrones was filmed here!

In May, you can't miss the Temps de Flor festival. Its numerous flower decorations in the streets make Girona all the more beautiful.

11. Empuriabrava

Empuriabrava channel, Costa Brava

Empuriabrava is often called the 'Venice of Spain' . Its 25 kilometres of navigable channels makes it the largest marine residential area in the whole of Europe. A picturesque sight! The beautiful backdrop of mountains adds to the relaxing holiday feeling it exudes.

This luxurious Costa Brava town is surrounded by medieval villages and gorgeous stretches of golden sand. You can choose to relax on one of its wonderful beaches, a couple of which are part of the Natural Park of L'Empordà, or explore its historical heritage. You can even go and experience a medieval festival!

12. Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar, view from the Castillo San Joan

Last but not least, there's Lloret de Mar, one of the most popular holiday resort towns on the Costa Brava . It is known to be especially popular among younger travellers, but promotes itself increasingly as a great family holiday destination. After all, this city has both culture and nature to offer - everything from medieval castles, informative museums and peaceful parks to amazing beaches! It also boast the biggest waterpark in Europe: Water World.

Whichever town on the Costa Brava you end up choosing, there will always be lots to see and do, with something for everyone!

9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

The stone buildings of a Marseille, France, situated next to a port filled with sailboats. A hill rises in the background, and there is a church with a tall spire on top. The whole scene is bathed in rose-colored light.

By Sophie Stuber

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Where to stay: Hotel de la Paix (€354 per night); Hotel Carlton (€406).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 2; tickets from €24.

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

To stay: Les Chambres de Marie (€170); La Maison Galiène (€259); Yndo Hotel (€355); Le Palais Gallien Hôtel & Spa (€419).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

To stay: Hotel Voltaire Opéra (€103); Hotel de la Cité (€120).

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

To stay: Au Lys Blanc (€138); Les Rives du Château (€210 for a two-bedroom apartment).

Lyon and St.-Étienne

Soccer: Lyon, July 24 to Aug. 9; tickets from €24. St.-Étienne, July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

To stay in Lyon: Fourvière Hotel (€189); Hôtel du Théâtre (€323).

To stay in St.-Étienne: Le Parc 42 (€113); Le Golf Sauna (€269).

Sailing (including windsurfing, kitesurfing and more): July 28 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 6; tickets from €24.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

To stay: Hotel Le Corbusier (€229); Maison Juste (€300).

Soccer: July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

To stay: Hôtel Rossetti (€186); Yelo Mozart (€238).

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.

To stay: Kia Ora Lodge (€265, seven miles from Teahupo’o); Punatea Village (€73, six miles from Teahupo’o).

7 international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

You’ve played some of the best golf courses in the United States . Now, you’re looking to pack your clubs, rally some friends, and hit the links on an international golf trip. But which parts of the world boast the best collection of golf courses?

Top Golf Destinations

From Latin America to the South Pacific — and, of course, Scotland — here’s a list of seven international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

1. Scotland: The Birthplace of Golf

The famous Swilcan bridge on the 18th hole of the Old Course links in St Andrews, Scotland. Many ... [+] famous golfers have traditionally posed for photographs on this bridge at the end of their tournament rounds, thanking the crowds for their support. The Royal & Ancient clubhouse can be seen towards the left of the background.

The Scottish seaside town of St. Andrews is known around the world as the birthplace of golf, and the iconic Old Course headlines most golfers’ bucket lists. Book a stay at the golf-inspired Rusacks St Andrews, where rooms come with views of the hallowed turf.

Even if you can’t score a tee time at the Old Course, there’s plenty more courses beckoning. In fact, Scotland has more golf courses per person than anywhere else in the world. From the links of Fife to courses along the dunes of Aberdeenshire’s coast, the country has more than 550 courses.

Scotland’s weather is known to fluctuate, but the golf season is typically April to September.

2. Ireland: A Links Paradise

Google issues ‘critical’ chrome update for all windows users, new ios 18 ai security move changes the game for all iphone users, world war i tactics make a comeback as a ukrainian gunner in the back of a propeller plane shoots down a russian drone.

Adare Manor in Ireland.

Ireland is nicknamed the “green of dreams” and the island is home to more than 400 golf clubs. A third of the world’s natural links courses are here, and more than 240,000 golfers make the pilgrimage to Ireland each year to play on the unforgiving fairways.

In County Limerick, Adare Manor is a coveted stay for golfers. The championship golf course designed by golf architect Tom Fazio will host the 2027 Ryder cup.

While most courses are open all year round, the best time for Ireland golf trips is from April to October. In peak summer, it stays light out until 10 p.m., which means you can play a couple of rounds and make the most of your golf vacation.

3. Fiji: Luxury Private Island Greens

Denaru Golf & Racquet Club

Fiji is a draw for all types of vacationers, from honeymooners to scuba divers. But it’s also a golfer’s paradise in the South Pacific, with more than a dozen courses scattered across the islands and stunning fairways lined with palm trees.

For those coming for golf, Viti Levu, the main island, is home to three championship courses: Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, which is located at the InterContinental Resort and comes with Pacific Ocean views, Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, and The Pearl South Pacific Golf Course.

Fun fact: The country has even produced one of the world’s top golfers, Vijay Singh, who fell in love with the game at the Nadi Airport Golf Course.

4. New Zealand: Dramatic Scenery

Te Arai Links in Tomarata, New Zealand

In New Zealand, golf is the sport with the highest participation among both men and women. The country has more than 400 golf courses, and the dramatic landscapes — from craggy, isolated coastlines tracing the greens to soaring mountains in the alpine areas — make it one of the most idyllic destinations for golfers.

Renowned architect Tom Doak has said “no country has seen its golf courses improve more over the past 20 years than New Zealand.” One of his famous New Zealand courses is Cape Kidnappers, which is perched above the ocean on clifftops, and built on ridge-and-valley landscape.

A 90 minute drive from Auckland (or 25 minutes via helicopter), Te Arai Links , which has two links golf courses along the coastline is also a sought-after destination. One course was designed by Doak, and the other is from Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. In between tee times, the area is known for its surf breaks and lively nearby market towns, Mangawhai and Matakana, as well as its vineyards and olive groves.

October through April is considered high season, and golfers will pay less the other times of year.

5. Mexico: Mountain, Desert And Ocean Landscapes

Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto

Los Cabos and the Baja Peninsula have long dominated as one of the best golf destinations in not just Latin America, but the world, thanks to its mountain-desert-ocean landscape, gentle sea breezes, and a collection of cacti-studded courses designed by some of the world’s greatest golf architects, like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

In Loreto, which is on the Eastern coast of Baja California Peninsula, golfers can tee off in a UNESCO World Heritage site when they play a round at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto by Danzante Bay, which overlooks the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Travelers can book packages Unlimited Golf or Spa that comes with unlimited rounds for three days.

Golf continues to grow and get better throughout Mexico, with more than 200 courses to play. Beyond the Baja Peninsula, some other top golf spots in Mexico include the courses dotting the Pacific Coastline and in the Riviera Maya, like El Camaleón, an 18-hole, Greg Norman-designed course that moves through tropical jungle, mangroves, and past freshwater canals. It’s also the first PGA Tour Course in Latin America.

6. Vietnam: A Fast-Growing Golf Destination

Hoiana Shores in Vietnam

For golfers looking for the next ‘it’ destination, turn your attention to Vietnam, where some of the world’s best golf architects are designing courses in the mountains, jungles, and along its coastline. Before 2020, there were about 80 golf courses in Vietnam, many attached to luxury resorts. By 2025, more than 200 courses will be built out.

Golfers can find year-round golf in Vietnam, heading into the highlands like Dalat for a cool mist and mountain breezes and hitting and booking tee times in Ho Chi Minh City and Southern Vietnam throughout the year. November to April is dry and cool in Northern Vietnam, and the same goes for Central Vietnam from February to May.

Hoina Shores Golf Club , designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a must-play for any golf enthusiast visiting Vietnam. It’s located within the $4 billion Hoiana Casino and Resort development on the Vietnamese coast south of Danang.

7. Mauritius: Bucket List Golf Destination

Anahita Golf Club

Mauritius is known for its stunning beaches and lush rainforests and unofficial world wonders like the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark, a sand dune bursting with colors. But this island in the Indian Ocean also has a history of golf. The tourism office claims that in 1844, when it was under British rule, Mauritius was the third country in the world to be introduced to the sport and Gymkhana Golf Club was the fourth country club in the world where golf was played

Today, Mauritius has 10 18-hole courses and three 9-hole golf courses, including the bucket-list worthy Iles aux Cerfs Golf Club at Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius . Golfers take a complimentary boat shuttle to the golf course where 18 holes come with scenic ocean views. The resort’s second course is Anahita Golf Club, which is set on a former sugar plantation and backed by mountains and fringed by a lagoon.
