Official Description from Casio. The evolution of PROTREK never stops. These new models embody some of the very best in functional beauty and ease of operation that modern technology has to offer. • The rotary bezel is specially shaped for easy operation, even while wearing gloves. Large letters indicating north, south, east, and west are colored for easy reading. Dedicated direction, barometer, and altitude buttons provide one-touch access to measurements. Buttons are large with slanted diamond patterns for plenty of slip resistance during operation. Since “easy to press” often also means “more operation error”, the back cover is designed to make it the same height of the button surfaces, which greatly reduces the chance of operation error. The result is easy button operation, but only when you need it to be. The number of pointer lines has been increased from 60 to 72 for easier to read World Time and sunrise times. TOUGH SOLAR ensures stable operation even when using power-hungry functions.

Feedback from users *accumulated information from our own comments and emails, forum threads, socials, reviews, etc.

PROs + solar powered is brilliant, no danger of loosing battery power + back light is good with variable time durations + the ease of use + fantastic looking watch + a huge array of functions. Great quality + the structure is very durable made to last in all conditions but do not test it as if you were Gshock

CONs – temperature is the temp of your wrist – the altimeter to be erratic – the strap loop is very resitent although it can bother if the watch is snug to the wrist – the wind rose ring external is not snap, so it moves with the friction of the clothes, as it only serves when we orient it with respect to the digital compass

The most distinctive specs of PRG-240 *Editorial — 100-meter water resistance (good for swimming but not for deep diving) — Low temperature resistant (stable operation of the watch is guaranteed even at a temperature of -20°C) — Tough Solar (CASIO’s original solar-charging system converts not only sunlight but also light from fluorescent lamps and other sources into power) — Digital compass (measures and displays direction as one of 16 points) — Thermometer (can measure and display the outside temperature in a range from -10 C to 60 C) — Barometer (measures the air pressures and displays tendencies in the weather) — Altimeter (The electronic mechanism “estimates” the altitude based on the air pressure) — Duplex LCD (Giving you a constant overview: Elements on the display are distinguished from one another using colour. This is achieved using different coloured layers placed on top of one another, allowing information to be displayed more clearly)

ProTrek Philosophy . Every adventure needs a reliable partner. PRO TREK is exactly the kind of watch that you need to meet the demands of your interests. PRO TREK is equipped with functions such as solar power operation, a digital compass, an altimeter, a barometer and a thermometer. The combination of innovative technology, a robust precision movement and state-of-the-art design makes the PRO TREK the perfect companion for all adventures under the open sky. Mountain or valley? Forest or meadow? River or lake? No matter what awaits you, you will be well-prepared to make any rough terrain your own thanks to the PRO TREK. Experience for yourself how PRO TREK opens up new horizons while always pointing you in the right direction!

Tough Solar . The CASIO Tough Solar System is now so advanced that even the weakest light sources are sufficient to operate the watches. The solar cells are so small and inconspicuous that they can be integrated easily into every watch face design. An accumulator in solar watches saves “superfluous” energy and releases it when the watch is in darkness. The accumulator is charged automatically and does not require manual activation.

Triple Sensor . PRO TREK watches are equipped with the latest Triple Sensor, version 3 technology, making them even more accurate than before. Three highly sensitive, extremely small sensors measure with absolute precision and instantly display changes in your environment. The precision of the digital compass, altimeter, barometer and thermometer is only possible with the Triple Sensor technology. At the same time, the three layer sensor is 95% smaller and consumes 90% less energy than before.

Altimeter. For all those who set their sights high The built-in altimeter uses a pressure sensor to measure the current air pressure. The measured air pressure is then used to provide an “estimate” of the current altitude. The electronic mechanism in the watch is pre-programmed with “ISA values” (“International Standard Atmosphere”) used to convert pressure values into altitude values. The air pressure and temperature generally become lower as the altitude increases. These values define the connection between altitude, air pressure and temperature.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Barometer. The barometer measures the air pressures and displays tendencies in the weather. The higher a person goes (ascent/terrain), the lower the barometric pressure will be. An increase in air pressure usually signifies an improvement in the weather. A decrease in air pressure usually means that bad weather is on its way. The air pressure is displayed with an accuracy of 1 hPa (hectopascals). The barometer can measure and display a range from 260 hPa to 1100 hPa.

Digital Compass. The PRO TREK digital compass shows 16 compass points. The direction of magnetic north and the bearing are calculated by the compass’s directional sensor The directional sensor consists of two rectangular coils that detect slight tensions created by the earth’s magnetic field. Depending on the position and direction, these tensions vary in intensity. There is a non-magnetic resistance between the two coils, which absorbs the subtle changes in tension. With each new position, the values that are measured by the resistance change. A microprocessor converts the measurements so that they can be displayed clearly on your watch.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Thermometer. The thermometer is used to measure the outside temperature. The temperature is displayed with an accuracy of 0.1 °C. The thermometer can measure and display a range from -10.0°C to 60.0°C.

WATERTIGHTNESS. The watertightness of the CASIO watches complies with DIN 8310 and ISO 22810. These standards describe the various classes of watertightness and the test procedure used to determine watertightness. These standards apply to the general wristwatch usage. Watches with metre indications for watertightness cannot be used immediately in this water depth, however, as water resistance metre indications are merely a pictorial representation of the test pressure. A wristwatch withstands the impact of water at the static pressure specified on the watch (e.g. 10 bar) and the theoretical immersion in water to the specified depth.

You ask, we answer…

CASIO’s original solar-charging system converts not only sunlight but also light from fluorescent lamps and other sources into power.

It’s the electronic mechanism that “estimates” the altitude based on the air pressure.

It measures and displays direction as one of 16 points.

Giving you a constant overview: Elements on the display are distinguished from one another using colour. This is achieved using different coloured layers placed on top of one another, allowing information to be displayed more clearly.

INTRODUCTION

g shock prg 240a

Ever wondered which are the 3 most well-known watch manufacturers according to most people and not just watch collectors and/or enthusiasts? Well i did and so last month i asked a total of 20 people (relatives, friends and FB fans) who surprisingly gave me similar answers. So the 5 most well-known watch manufacturers based on the answers of all of them are Rolex, Tag Heuer, Citizen, Seiko and Casio with Rolex and Casio taking the first two places since these were mentioned by pretty much everyone. Now although there's not a single person that i know of that owns a genuine Rolex watch this brand is the equivalent of Rolls Royce (in watches) so it's hardly a surprise that most people know of them. What i didn't expect came later on when i asked all of them if they were aware of a specific model manufactured by one of those watch companies and the only one some of them knew was the G-SHOCK line by Casio. Casio however has many similar lines including the PROTREK one and today we got their latest PRG-240 model to review.

Casio was founded in 1957 with the development of a revolutionary calculator. Casio’s small, fast calculator greatly increased office efficiency, and before long people had their own personal calculators. Thanks to this technology, it is easy now for anyone to perform calculations, leaving people free to concentrate on creative thinking. Over the years, Casio has developed many other groundbreaking products. Our watches became critical tools for planning and living daily life. Our electronic dictionaries provide a wealth of knowledge in a tiny package. Our electronic musical instruments deliver the joy of playing music for people of all skill levels, and our digital cameras make it easy to turn the excitement of the moment into a precious memory. All of these developments supported people's intellectual creativity, and that is the essence of how we see Casio's role in the world.

Compared to my first Casio watch the PROTREK PRG-240 looks like it was taken from a Star Trek movie both in terms of appearance and functionality. I mean ok my original G-SHOCK had a temperature reader, world time and an 100M water resistance but that was just about all the extend of its features. The PROTREK PRG-240 on the other hand offers full auto illumination according to the amount of light around it, two zone LCD screen for easier reading, an digital compass that detects the magnetic north, an altimeter working up to 10.000 meters (air pressure based), sunrise/sunset times (geographical location input required), an barometer which informs you of the weather behavior, an thermometer working from -10 and up to +60 degrees Celsius, world time, an stop watch that can measure times of up to 24 hours (1/100s accuracy), an countdown timer with a max time of 24 hours, 5 daily alarms, automatic calendar, 12/24 hour timekeeping, an directional bezel, water resistance of up to 10bar/100m, time accuracy of -+15s per month and finally a solar rechargeable battery (2.3v/18mAh) that never needs to be changed (or not for at least 10 years or so). Like if this very long list was not enough however the PROTREK PRG-240 has even more functions available (less important ones) which you can check on the next page (it does however lack the radio-set functionality of the more expensive versions). So the time has come to get really close and personal with the Casio PROTREK PRG-240 and see exactly what it is that makes the mid/high end PROTREK like unique.

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 Review: A Super-Spy Watch for the Rest of Us

Casio ProTrek-PRG340-1 Watch

Loads of gizmos, built for adventure, and charmingly ugly, the Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 is mission-ready.

Stunts, chase scenes, exotic locales —  when you think of the Mission: Impossible movies, certain set pieces come to mind. But among EDC enthusiasts, this film franchise has another calling card: Ugly but charming (“chugly”) wristwatches .

Now, the ProTrek PRG340-1 ( $280 ) hasn’t technically been featured on the silver screen. But in my mind’s eye, this new Casio would be perfectly at home on the wrist of an IMF agent.

It’s got all the features a good super-spy needs: solar charging, a compass, barometer, and altimeter, and enough alarms and timers to keep your world-saving plan on track. Plus, it has that bulky, utilitarian look I’ve come to expect from Ethan Hunt and his team.

So when the offer to test drive the watch came through, I half-expected the email to set my computer on fire. This, thankfully, did not happen. But a certain theme song may have played in my head as soon as the tester arrived. And over more than a week’s worth of wrist time, the tune never quite managed to fade.

In short: The Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 is an excellent adventure watch, fully equipped for various situations. Its massive numerals and easy-access functions make it a breeze to operate, in a package that wears somehow smaller than its dimensions. It’s attractive, feature-rich, and let down just slightly by its materials and finishing.

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 Watch Review

Wearing Casio ProTrek PRW6900YL-1 Watch Review

  • Case size: 54.7 × 51.7 × 15.1 mm
  • Case/band material: Biomass plastic
  • Weight: 54 g
  • Movement: Casio Tough Solar/Triple Sensor Quartz
  • Water resistance: 100 m
  • Crystal: Mineral

Do you want other people to be able to read the time from your wrist, halfway across the room? Then the PRG340-1 is your watch.

The central numerals dominate the ProTrek’s display, which is somewhat smaller than its nearly 55mm length would indicate. Yet despite its size, the watch wears surprisingly well.

Its case rises 15.1 mm from the wrist, and the band dives down from the lugs with a comfortable grace. There’s also a model with a titanium bracelet , for an upcharge of $50.

Casio aimed to make the ProTrek equally as easy on the environment. The company website states that the PRG340 line uses biomass plastics that don’t sacrifice comfort.

“The case and urethane band are crafted from biomass plastics made with castor oil and the band from biomass plastics made with corn,” according to Casio.

Corn, you say? Well, I guess even a super-spy needs to have their vegetables. But as cushy as the band may be, I’m more impressed with the various gadgetry.

The Adventurer’s Toolbox

The PRG340-1 comes with three major sensors: a compass, a barometer, and an altimeter. This leaves out the atomic timekeeping found on its recently reviewed cousin , though the solar charging remains.

Each of these is available with a press of the corresponding button on the watch’s right-hand side. There’s also a two-way rotating bezel, something the analog/digital PRW6900YL-5 lacks.

But the star here is the screen. Per Casio, “The duplex LCD lays out separate layers for the compass graphics and the clock functions, enabling a larger compass display for better legibility and easier navigation in a design that is both functional and beautiful.”

It’s fairly impressive to see this layering in action, especially knowing that there’s a solar panel lurking somewhere behind. Some digital watches can be difficult to read at an angle, especially when driving or wearing sunglasses. Not so with the PRG340-1, despite its technical complications.

And speaking of brightness, check out its double LED.

PRW6900YL-5 Double LED Casio ProTrek Watch Review

From a technology standpoint, I think this ProTrek lines up with its price. Unfortunately, it’s let down just a bit by the plastics surrounding said tech.

I’m all for the use of environmentally friendly materials, and for this, Casio gets something of a pass. But there’s also a slight touch of button-wobble here, and the chassis feels similar to that of a basic Tough Solar Sport .

Are the biomass plastics better? Yes, I’d say so. But whether or not they’re $200 better is up to the buyer to decide.

Speaking of the number 200, it would be nice to see a higher water resistance here. Still, 100m is solid, and I understand that the sensors likely prohibit a better rating. And the PRG340 will do something that even most watertight G-SHOCKs won’t:

Casio watches

That’s right! It’ll lay flat.

And all jokes aside, this is actually a nice feature. It means that you can set the watch on a table while fist-fighting with an assassin or terrorists, and still be able to glance at the time.

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1: Conclusion

Casio ProTrek PRG340-1 Watch Review

Reading through the product description, it’s clear that Casio is selling the PRG340-1 as an adventurous, outdoorsy watch. And truly, it is. But for me, this is secret-agent stuff all the way.

With its massive numerals, technical credentials, and intuitive layout and interface, the ProTrek PRG340-1 has all the makings of a long-term, go (almost) anywhere companion.

The use of biomass plastics is laudable, even if they leave the watch feeling just a touch on the side of toy-like. But in my book, the overall comfort and functionality make up for it.

Now, stand back — this review will self-destruct!

Solar-powered Pro Trek PRG-340 improves on the PRG-240

The Pro Trek PRG-340 features the Triple Sensor Version 3, an exterior made of biomass plastics, and other design tweaks over the PRG-240.

Pro Trek PRG-340

Casio is introducing the all-new Pro Trek PRG-340 series in August. Like the previous PRG-240, the major features of the PRG-340 include Tough Solar power, Triple Sensor (pressure: altimeter-barometer, compass, thermometer), 100-meter water resistance, a rotating bezel, and a duplex LCD for enhanced compass readings and other functions.

The PRG-340 is slightly narrower and slimmer than the PRG-240 (54.7 × 51.7 × 15.1 mm for the PRG-340 versus 57.3 × 50.9 × 15.3 mm), as well as lighter (54 grams for the PRG-340 models with a urethane band versus 66 grams). The front light button is now larger due to the adjust button being moved to the upper left where the sensor used to be, and the smaller sensor is now housed within the module on the left side. According to Casio, the buttons, including the dedicated sensor buttons, are easier to press. Like the recent Pro Trek PRW-61 , the PRG-30 is made of eco-friendly biomass plastics, which are sourced from castor oil and corn. Biomass plastics are used for the case, bezel, and soft urethane band (for models with a urethane band). Another improvement is the Triple Sensor Version 3 upgrade, which allows for 1-meter altitude measurements in 1-second intervals (versus 5-meter and 5-second intervals for the PRG-240) and continuous measurement readings up to 60 seconds (versus 20 seconds for the PRG-240). The watch can also be laid completely flat, allowing it to be used with a paper map.

Pro Trek PRG-340-1 Flat Band

Announced for an international release in August, the three debut models include the black PRG-340-1 , green PRG-340-3 , and PRG-340T-7 with a titanium band. The PRG-340-1JF is also listed for an August release in Japan with a tax-included price of 29,700 yen.

Features : Tough Solar, Triple Sensor Version 3 (digital compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer), low-temperature resistance (-10C/14F), world time (48 cities), sunrise/sunset time display, 1/10-second stopwatch (1,000 hours with elapsed time, split time, 1st-2nd place times), countdown timer (24 hours, settable in 1-minute and 1-hour increments), 5 daily alarms with 1 snooze, full auto Super Illuminator LED light with 1.5 or 3-second afterglow.

Module : 3513 ( Instructions at Casio.com )

Advantages : Slimmer and lighter than the PRG-240. Updated Triple Sensor. Band can lay completely flat to navigate with paper map. Improved button placements.

Disadvantages : No Multi-Band 6 automatic time adjustment.

PRG-240T-7

The evolution of PROTREK never stops. These new models embody some of the very best in functional beauty and ease of operation that modern technology has to offer. • The rotary bezel is specially shaped for easy operation, even while wearing gloves. Large letters indicating north, south, east, and west are colored for easy reading. • Dedicated direction, barometer, and altitude buttons provide one-touch access to measurements. Buttons are large with slanted diamond patterns for plenty of slip resistance during operation. • Since "easy to press" often also means "more operation error", the back cover is designed to make it the same height of the button surfaces, which greatly reduces the chance of operation error. The result is easy button operation, but only when you need it to be. The number of pointer lines has been increased from 60 to 72 for easier to read World Time and sunrise times. TOUGH SOLAR ensures stable operation even when using power-hungry functions.

Measuring altitudes based on changes in atmospheric pressure

The altimeter determines the altitude at your current location based on accumulated atmospheric pressure changes measured by the pressure sensor. Setting the altimeter at a location where you know the precise altitude before starting your ascent enables it to take even more precise altitude measurements.

Sea level measurement

Setting the altimeter at a location where you know the precise altitude enables you to determine the elevation of your current position with respect to sea level. If you come across a marker indicating 400 meters above sea level while hiking or climbing, for example, simply set the altimeter at 400 meters. This enables you to obtain more accurate readings with respect to sea level when you take subsequent measurements after moving on.

Altitude memory

The altitude memory stores data on the month, date, time and results of altitude readings taken automatically at regular intervals and displays the highest and lowest altitudes measured as well as the cumulative ascent/descent altitude and relative altitude. This data provides an easily understandable summation of your ascents and descents during a climb.

pro trek prg 240 1er

  • Cumulative ascent altitude : total of ascent altitudes (A + C)
  • Cumulative descent altitude : total of descent altitudes (B + D)
  • Highest altitude : altitude measured at the highest point E among all readings during memory measurement
  • Lowest altitude : altitude measured at the lowest point F among all readings during memory measurement
  • Highest/lowest previous record altitudes
  • Sum of cumulative ascent/descent altitudes : computed repeatedly at time of memory measurements between 0 and 99,995 meters

Altitude differential display

Checking against contour lines on a map enables you to confirm your cumulative ascents/descents. Determining the height of your hourly ascents by resetting the altitude differential display once an hour can be helpful in establishing a reasonable climbing plan, for example.

Forecasting the weather based on the atmospheric pressure tendency

A graphic display of atmospheric pressure readings taken at regular intervals reveals pressure trends at a glance. When the pressure is rising, the weather is likely to improve; when it's falling, there's usually worse weather ahead. This feature can remind you to take your swimming suit along, or alert you to approaching trouble.

Atmospheric pressure tendency graph / Atmospheric pressure tendency indicator

The barometer measures the atmospheric pressure every two hours automatically and displays the recent atmospheric pressure tendency and the current pressure graphically.

DIGITAL COMPASS

Aligning a map with the surrounding terrain

If you determine magnetic north with the direction measurement function and place a map beside your watch, you can align the map with the surrounding geography.

Magnetic declination correction

You can change the direction measurement standard from “magnetic north” to “true north” by inputting the magnetic declination data indicated on a topographical map to correct the direction.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Bearing Memory [selected models only]

The Bearing Memory memorizes directions detected by the direction measurement function and displays them continuously in graphic format. You can travel straight toward your destination by following a course determined with the memorized direction displayed steadily in the 12 o’clock position on your watch face. This capability also comes in handy when visibility is low due to such factors as trees or fog.

pro trek prg 240 1er

THERMOMETER

Predicting your destination temperature based on the temperature at your current location

The temperature generally decreases by approximately 6.5°C with every increase in altitude of 1,000 meters, or 3.6°F with every increase of 1,000 feet. If the temperature at 1,000 meters is 10°C, therefore, the temperature at 3,000 meters will probably be about -3°C.

Watch Review: Casio Pro Trek PRG340

pro trek prg 240 1er

One of the latest watches in the Casio Pro Trek collection is the PRG340 family, which currently consists of three models, including the pictured PRG340-1, PRG340-3 (which has yellow versus red color accents), and the slightly more expensive (by just $50) PRG340T-7 that has a case fitted with titanium sections, as well as a matching titanium bracelet. Casio doesn’t break new ground here from a technical standpoint, but these watches are a slimmed-down and modernized version of a classic outdoor timepiece that countless hikers, campers, trekkers, hunters, fishers, etc., have relied upon for many years. To review the Casio Pro Trek PRG340, I did what one should do with a timepiece like this — I took it into the mountains.

Pro Trek watches have traditionally been typified by their “triple-sensor” array, which includes a compass, barometer, and altimeter. Since the latter two actually use the same sensor, an additional thermometer is included in the mix, though you need to take the watch off your wrist for a bit to get a proper reading. Over the years, Casio has included solar charging (Tough Solar movement module) for the battery and a host of other little software features (such as sunrise/sunset time and other “complications”) that help increase the utility of these fun little wrist gadgets. It was probably predictable that Casio G-Shock watches would intrude into the Pro Trek space, and that has certainly happened. It really started when Casio decided to put the full ABC (altimeter, barometer, compass) functions into the G-Shock Rangeman. Since then, consumers have been a bit confused about the Pro Trek vs. G-Shock question, and I understand that. That said, there are still some important areas in which Pro Trek products are useful.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Some of those areas include legibility and usability. While G-Shock watches can require a bit of a learning curve to understand all the functions, Pro Trek watches are comparatively simple to understand and operate with handy dedicated buttons to access necessary features and a very clear and legible display. Casio protects its G-Shock collection by making the watches a bit more water resistant and durable, on average, but from a visual standpoint, I think you can agree that Pro Trek and G-Shock watches are two different beasts. But it is true that Casio product managers have to tread a thin line to make sure that G-Shock and Pro Trek model worlds don’t step on each others’ feet too much.

I grew up lusting after Pro Trek watches as a kid. The variety of functions and sensors led the 10-year-old in me to believe that these were the world’s most capable gadget watches. In a lot of ways, they were. Now, the best Pro Trek watches are a vestige of the non-connected smartwatch world — products that can perform all of their functions in the middle of nowhere, without any need for civilization. Core functions like the compass, altimeter, and barometer are designed to assist with navigation, weather prediction, and overall safety when you are deep in the wilderness. You need some skill when it comes to how to use all of this data (such as understanding what shifts in barometric pressure mean) but, overall, these are very competent wrist gadgets that aren’t very expensive and can offer years of utility.

pro trek prg 240 1er

While the PRG340 might look a lot like classic Pro Trek models, the case is relatively new and produced from sustainable biomass plastics. The case wears smaller than it sounds but is rated at 51.7mm-wide, 54.7mm lug-to-lug distance, and 15.1mm-thick. Note the still-new articulating lugs to help the watch wear more comfortably even on smaller wrists. The case is water resistant to 100 meters and has a mineral crystal under a protective bezel. The free-moving rotating bezel is used for navigational purposes. Casio also includes quick-release bars for the straps, a feature that is increasingly common on these models. The strap looks a lot like classic Pro Trek polyurethane straps but is actually surprisingly thin and pliable, making for a lot of wearing comfort. The entire watch and strap weigh very little, just 54 grams in total.

One of the things I’ve always loved about Pre Trek watches is the focus on legibility. Not only is the time display very large and easy to see, but other information on the dial is also designed to be easy to view. This includes everything from the little multi-purpose graph section on the dial, as well as how you operate and read the various sensor functions such as the altimeter and the compass. Compared to modern smartwatches and other connected products, the information displayed on a Pro Trek can seem simple by comparison. But that’s really the point of a product like this — it is for people who don’t want a connected product, either because they are too frequently out of mobile service range, or because they just don’t like the idea of worrying if the battery is charged or if there will be a software problem. What Casio offers with the Pro Trek is rock-solid reliability. I also want to mention that, while the PRG340 is not a connected watch, it does have the longstanding ability to receive radio signals from a nearby atomic clock in order to update the time. This doesn’t work all over the world but is a legacy function in a number of Casio products.

pro trek prg 240 1er

One of the more visually fun features that the PRG340 models have is Casio’s “duplex LCD screens,” which are used for the compass function. This places a secondary LCD screen over the main one and is used for the compass needle indicators that overlay the main screen. This isn’t new, but it is one of the more impressive inventions of the Pro Trek family and something I am happy to see here in this PRG340. To my knowledge, this particular system has yet to find its way into a Casio G-Shock model.

Hiking at over 7,000 feet in the territory where it often rains (I got rained on) was a perfect place to test out the Casio Pro Trek PRG340 in the wild. I was able to precisely measure both my current altitude and altitude gains, as well as rely on the compass to help keep my bearings in unfamiliar lands. The barometer (and thunder sounds in the sky) were a good clue that it was going to rain, and knowing that proved very helpful. While the Pro Trek family is very much “classic” by today’s gadget watch standards, there is still a lot of appeal here, and I think plenty of people could make use of a watch like this while participating in the right outdoor activities. For me, it was a welcome blast from the past, and I look forward to hiking with it more. Retail price for the Casio Pro Trek PRG340-1 is $280 USD . Learn more at the Casio website here .

From what I have read and saw in video reviews this PRG-340 is the latest version of the one you have. They were so well liked Casio came out with a new model since the 240 was at some point discontinued. Yours looks good! is it on a bracelet?

pro trek prg 240 1er

Nice. A very large and easy to read dial, which is always a good thing. Enjoy!

The main gripe of people with digital ver3 sensor Protreks was that they omitted the dual layer LCD which made compass readings difficult. Casio solved that gripe with this model nearly 8 years later.

Found and shared from Youtube. Guy does pretty good reviews.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

pro trek prg 240 1er

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

pro trek prg 240 1er

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

pro trek prg 240 1er

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

pro trek prg 240 1er

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

pro trek prg 240 1er

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

pro trek prg 240 1er

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Pro-Moscow separatists once marched in this Ukraine border city. Now it’s standing against Russia.

RUSSIA-UKRAINE BORDER — The helicopter cut through the gray sky, following the path of the razor-wire fence below it. Lt. Col. Uiry Trubachov, of Ukraine’s Border Guard Service, squinted up at the chopper.

“Those are Russians,” he said.

Before Russia’s invasion and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014, the border barriers didn’t exist. Now, they separate Ukraine’s easternmost cities and towns from the buildup of Russian troops on the other side — and what U.S. officials and allies have warned could be the vanguard of an attack on Ukraine.

At Ukraine’s northeastern border crossing near Kharkiv — the country’s predominantly Russian-speaking, second-most populous city, with about 1.5 million people — the fences are controversial. Some who live right at the edge of the boundary resent the obstruction to Russian territory they used to visit often — to pick mushrooms in the nearby forest or see friends in Belgorod, a Russian city about an hour away from the main land crossing.

[ What you need to know about Russia's military buildup on Ukraine's border ]

The language and identity fault lines that weave through Ukraine are especially pronounced here — a region where pro-Russian separatists once raised their flag. Across many parts of Ukraine, Russia tugs with a sense of common bonds and shared history. But Ukrainians have nonetheless chosen a pro-Western path that carries the powerful momentum of the future.

It’s also what makes Kharkiv a rich study in Ukrainians’ views toward Russia as its president, Vladimir Putin, deepens a showdown with NATO over what Moscow perceives as its sphere of influence, which includes Ukraine.

‘Defending Kharkiv’

The Kremlin attempts to exploit the East-West pull in Ukraine with propaganda that accuses the Ukrainian government of oppressing Russian speakers. But many in Kharkiv fiercely objected to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s comments to The Washington Post that the city could be a prime target for Russia.

“Realistically, if Russia decides to enhance their escalation, of course they are going to do this on those territories where historically there are people who used to have family links to Russia,” Zelensky said. “Kharkiv, which is under Ukraine government control, could be occupied.”

Kharkiv may not harbor as much resentment of Russia as other parts of Ukraine. But the pro-Russian sentiments from 2014 that threatened to turn the city into another Moscow-backed separatist territory — similar to the Donetsk and Luhansk enclaves in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region — no longer have major sway.

[ Six ways Russia views Ukraine — and why each should worry the West ]

“People here love Ukraine because Ukrainians live here,” said Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov. “Yes, we speak Russian. If you ask me if Kharkiv citizens want Ukraine to be friends with Russia, the answer is definitely yes. But do they want war? Definitely not. Do they want for us to be a piece of Russia? Of course not.”

“We will not be giving away the city of Kharkiv to anyone,” Terekhov added. “We will be standing shoulder to shoulder defending Kharkiv.”

As pro-Russian separatists marched through Kharkiv with Russian flags in early April 2014, Gamlet Zinkivskyi had a front-row seat. His apartment balcony at the time looked onto one of downtown Kharkiv’s main streets. He watched with dismay as demonstrators occupied the regional administration building and declared the sovereignty of a so-called “Kharkiv People’s Republic.”

“That was a moment when I started packing my things and thinking where to go,” said Zinkivskyi, a prominent artist and Kharkiv native. “I knew I couldn’t stay here. If Kharkhiv becomes Russian, that’s it, I’m leaving.”

Unlike the separatist movements in the Donbas region — touching off an ongoing conflict that has claimed nearly 14,000 lives since 2014 — the one in Kharkhiv ultimately fizzled. Kyiv’s forces maintained control of the city. It instead welcomed scores of refugees fleeing the fighting in the new self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics.

[ What NATO members have sent Ukraine so far ]

The plight of those people — and seeing what ultimately became of the separatist regions — helped shift attitudes in Kharkiv, Zinkivskyi said. Life in those territories is locked in a political limbo with few job opportunities. Many people end up moving to Moscow at their first opportunity. In the city of Donetsk, which has a population of about 900,000 people, a nighttime curfew is in place four days a week.

“Some people used to believe that Donetsk will turn into Donetsk City, with skyscrapers, and New Yorkers dreaming of moving to the Donbas,” Zinkivskyi said. “That didn’t happen, to put it mildly.”

“And those people realized that, hey, they didn’t want the same thing happening in Kharkiv,” he added.

About a 30-minute drive from downtown Kharkiv is what looks like a row of storage containers. It is actually a camp for people who fled the separatist territories. Each block has small apartments — smaller than most college dorm rooms — with shared kitchens and bathrooms.

Liudmilya Makarova has been living here with her daughter, who has Down syndrome, and her son since 2015, about a year after they fled the self-proclaimed Luhansk separatist republic. The kids sleep on bunk beds. Makarova is on a couch that doesn’t have room to unfold into a bed. Colorful drawings line the wall, giving the space a cozy feel despite the cramped quarters. But it was never supposed to feel like home.

“I had no idea it would last so long, with no end of it in sight,” Makarova said.

Her last memories of her home in Luhansk were hiding in the cellar with her children as intense fighting broke out between the rebels and government forces, including airstrikes. She was too afraid to leave the space to cook for them.

“I couldn’t keep watching my children cry,” she said. “I’m recalling that and I’m starting to shake.”

Talk of a fresh attack from Russia is a trigger for some of the camp’s residents, who already fled war once. Makarova said she keeps away from the news. One of her neighbors, Marina Kirbaba, follows it more closely.

“We’ve been through this before,” Kirbaba said. “I don’t think that — well, then again, who knows what Putin has in his head. I don’t know why he would attack? Why?”

Scanning the border

What used to be an empty field surrounded by thick forest is now split by trenches Ukraine has never had to use. The military built them, with wooden-planked walls, at the eastern edge of the Kharkiv region in 2015 as the separatist conflict in Donbas flared.

Just beside the trenches is an observation tower with cameras that monitor activity near this border around-the-clock.

If the Russians choose to invade Kharkiv, this won’t stop them, said Trubachov, of Ukraine’s Border Guard Service. But it might slow them down enough for Ukraine to call in reinforcements.

“The situation is stable and under control,” Trubachov said. “Directly near the line of state control, we do not observe the movement or gathering of Russian troops — I mean, the territory that we can control by observing.”

[ Four maps that explain the Ukraine-Russia conflict ]

When the fencing was installed seven years ago, it quite literally walled off a small border village of about 100 retirees. Now a line of trenches runs behind their farm plots, followed by the fence. Getting in or out of the village means passing through a border guard security checkpoint.

Ukrainians are able to enter Russia at the nearby land border crossing. But people from the village complain that it’s a long walk for them to get to the checkpoint and that the crossing process is challenging. It used to be just a 10-minute walk behind their yards.

One woman started crying because she said she’s been unable to visit her son’s grave, which is in Russia. He died during the Soviet Union’s war in Afghanistan during the 1980s. Another lamented that she could buy groceries cheaper across the border in Russia.

“We are not feeling any aggression toward Russians. We are Russians, too,” said 77-year-old Mikhail Fokiev. “Moreover, we have plenty of relatives there.”

But asked what he would do if the Russian military crossed into this region, Fokiev said he would go west, further into Ukraine.

“What else is there to do?” he asked.
