Never Ending Footsteps

What’s it Like to Travel in Qatar?

Boat leaving Doha port

I was surprised by how much I loved Qatar.

I really didn’t expect to find the country sitting firmly near the top of my list of favourite travel experiences, but here we are.

I tend to think of the Gulf States as being bland lands of sand. Kind of boring, kind of soulless, kind of samey. I hadn’t been struck by the UAE, for example. Dubai was fine, Abu Dhabi was fine. The country was fine.

It was fine!

I liked it just fine.

Fine, fine, fine.

I expected Qatar to be similar.

In fact, I only decided to spend time there because I needed to get from Thailand to the U.K.

That, to me, presented the perfect opportunity to work in a layover in a new country. It’s typically how I find myself in the Middle East these days. I visited Dubai on a layover between Cape Town and London, Muscat and Abu Dhabi on a layover between London and Saigon, and Qatar would be the perfect stop between Phuket and London.

Knowing very little about the country, I gave myself four days to explore.

Views from my plane window over Qatar. There are miles of sand stretching towards the horizon with just a small patch of green marking out a football stadium

I expected Qatar to be full of dust and sand and muted colours. I expected opulence and glitz. I expected shisha. I expected tea. I expected souks. I expected dozens of skyscrapers.

I found all of that, but what I didn’t expect was the incredible architecture. The green spaces. The street food trucks. The turquoise ocean lapping at the shores of a ghost town filled with sand.

Qatar was so much more diverse than I expected and I can’t wait to share why I fell so hard for this country.

Today, I want to delve into what it’s like to travel there.

Museum of Islamic Art in Doha

The Souk Waqif Smells Amazing

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a city that smells as good as Doha.

The smell in the Souq Waqif — the main marketplace — had me drooling. There’s so much shisha here, and I loved the fruity smell intertwined with the scent of kebabs and freshly-poured cardamom tea. Spices, perfumes, and incense all filled the air, and it all made for the most heavenly blend of scents.

I spent most days wandering around this area wanting to dive nose-first into every restaurant and market stall I passed. When I think back to my time in Qatar, my memory is focused solely on the smells.

And Everyone’s Obsessed with Falcons

One of the most unexpected areas of the Souq Waqif was the falcon market. In Qatar, falconry is an obsession — much like football in the U.K. — to the point where there’s a specialist falcon hospital in Doha offering free treatment and even a falcon festival held every year. Falcon hunting is a huge part of Qatari culture and if you’re rich enough to fly first-class on Qatar Airways, your falcon can even travel for free with you on the flight. Oh yeah, and you can get a passport for your falcon, too.

Three thousand people own falcons in Qatar and if you don’t have a spare few thousand dollars lying around to buy one for yourself, fear not. You can usually hold a falcon and take some photos while you’re walking through the falcon market in Souq Waqif.

It’s Easy to Visit Qatar on a Budget

While Doha has a reputation of being all about the slave labour glitzy skyscrapers, Qatar is a surprisingly easy country to spend little money in.

Doha is home to the Q Hostel , where prices come in at just $16 a night for a dorm bed, so there’s somewhere affordable to stay for my budget travellers out there. Food is pretty cheap, too. I usually spent around $7 for a meal in Doha — less if I was grabbing street food from a hipster Airstream. I was surprised to see street food trucks all over Doha, selling anything from Chinese dumplings to hot dogs.

Transportation is inexpensive. You’ll pay less than a dollar to get around Doha by bus and maybe $3 or $4 to travel by bus to another city. Uber’s available in Doha, too, and I’d opt for that most of the time or ask my hotel to call me a taxi. Like many countries around the world, you’ll want to make sure the driver is using the meter and remind them that your fare is free if they don’t.

When it comes to activities, you won’t need to spend much on entrance fees. The fantastic Museum of Islamic Art is totally free to check out, and so is Al Zubarah’s UNESCO-designated fort. Other free attractions include the Abdul Wahhab Mosque — which is so beautiful — camel racing competitions at Al Shahaniya, complete with robot jockeys, and the Ras Abrouq Nature Reserve.

For something quirky, check out the Sheikh Faisal Museum, which is home to a Qatari businessman’s collection of Weird Shit — it’s 45 QAR (12 USD) and you’ll find 600 classic cars, ancient coins, dinosaur fossils, a peacock farm, a Syrian horse, random weapons, and so. much. more.

So Qatar can be pretty affordable, but there’s one exception and that’s taking tours as a solo traveller.

I shelled out a whopping $140 for my tour into the north of Qatar , and that was the cheapest option I could find anywhere online.

If you get lucky, Qatar’s luxury can be surprisingly affordable. I managed to score a heavily-discounted stay in a five-star hotel for just $90 a night for no other reason than it was a last-minute booking and they had a lot of rooms still available.

One final thing I want to mention is that Qatar Airways offers an incredible layover scheme that I’d highly recommend taking advantage of. You can spend up to four days in the country on a layover and the airline will put you up in a 4 or 5 star hotel without you needing to spend a penny. Seriously. For some reason, my flight didn’t qualify me for taking advantage of this, but if yours does, it’ll make for an exceptionally cheap trip to Qatar.

Doha skyline

Doha’s Skyline is Exceptional

I always love a good city skyline, and Doha’s skyscrapers were made for taking futuristic photos.

The best place to take a photo of the skyline is either from the Islamic Art Museum or from MIA Park, which surrounds the museum. Take a picnic or grab something from one of the street food trucks and sit for a few hours, watching the boats go racing past.

It Gets So Hot in Summer

I visited Doha in February — Qatar’s winter — and it was the perfect time of year to visit. I encountered blue skies and sunshine, temperatures were usually around a perfect 23°C/73°F, and I was able to cover up without getting sweaty.

I think of travelling in Qatar as being comfortable and cool. In the summer, not so much. In July and August, temperatures regularly skyrocket up to 42°C/108°F during the day, dropping to 32°C/90°F at night.

Al Jumail in Qatar

I Highly Recommend Getting Out of Doha

I loved Doha so much more than I expected, but it was getting out of Doha that really captivated my heart.

There are three options when it comes to day-tripping from the capital: heading north, west, or south. In a country the size of Connecticut, it’s easy to cover a lot of ground.

I decided to go north. My tour took me to Al Khor, Al Thakhira, and Al Zubarah on a full-day exploration. We started by checking out Al Khor’s fishing village and market — it’s the second largest city in Qatar and home to a surprisingly lovely beach. Next, we headed into the mangroves to see parts of Qatar that aren’t filled with desert sand. The famous Al Zubarah fort is the only UNESCO site in the country and I was thrilled to see it with my own eyes. We rounded off our trip with a visit to the ghost town of Al Thakhira. I loved it. The sparkling sea washed up just metres from this abandoned old town, and it was so cool to wander around. I particularly loved wandering around the old mosque.

The other day trips sounded just as fun.

If you decide to head west , you’ll be taken to the 18th Century Zekreet Fort and Zakreet Film City — a replica town in the middle of the desert, which was intended to be used as a backdrop in movies, although nothing was ever filmed there. You’ll round off your time by wandering around a bizarre desert sculpture called East/West. It comprises four steel walls, each 17 metres high and stretching out over a kilometre across the sand. I’d have loved to have seen this if I’d had longer in Qatar, as it looks very Burning Man-esque.

The trip to the south of Qatar is all about the desert, too. You’ll ride camels over the dunes, strap in for an invigorating dune bashing session in a 4WD, and check out the famous inland sea, where turquoise waters are surrounded by white sand. Khor al-Adaid is one of just three places in the world where the sea meets the sand dunes, and here, it does so while you’re overlooking Saudi Arabia. Again, this is something I’d have loved to have seen while I was in Qatar, but skipped out on it because when I went dune bashing in Dubai  it gave me nothing but nausea.

You could easily spend four days in Qatar, exploring Doha, the north, west, and south, and leave having seen practically all of the country.

Doha's corniche

Doha’s Corniche is Great

Doha isn’t all that set-up for walking, which is why its boardwalk was so wonderful. Shaped in a crescent, it stretches for 7 kilometres alongside Doha’s Bay, and offers so many great views.

You can walk from the Islamic Art Museum to Sheraton Park in the West Bay on this trail, and it’s where everyone gathers to watch the fishermen, to fly kites, to grab a kebab, or even to head out for a jog.

The best way to see the corniche, though, is by jumping on this traditional dhow boat to sail the Arabic Gulf as the sun sets over the skyscrapers. It’s priced at $60 per person and offers up a fresh view of that iconic city skyline from the sea. While you’re on board, you’ll also learn all about Qatar’s strong relationship with the sea, from pearl diving to fishing, plus trading with neighboring countries.

I Felt Exceptionally Safe in Qatar

Yes, I felt perfectly safe going for a run in Doha!

I always feel safe as a solo woman in the Gulf States, and Qatar was no exception. It’s actually one of the safest countries in the world, and occasionally ranks as the safest place on the entire planet. Violent crimes are extremely rare in this country, and when they happen, they’re not usually aimed at foreigners. I felt super-safe when wandering around on my own, whether it was in the middle of the day or at night.

Doha's golden thumb

Doha Has a Giant Golden Thumb

I loved it.

The golden thumb was placed in Souq Waqif to celebrate the Qatari football club’s win in the Asian Cup and it was so fun to keep stumbling across it while I was walking around.

Al Zubarah in Qatar

The Karak is so good

Until I visited Qatar, I would have told you that the masala tea in Nepal is the best you could ever taste.

Well, I have a new top spot on my tea rankings, because the tea — the karak — in Qatar is so good that I want to drink it everyday for the rest of my life. Made from black tea, cardamom, cinnamon, saffron, cloves, and ginger it has such a rich, spicy flavour. Dump a ton of evaporated milk and sugar in and you find yourself with the most drinkable tea on the planet.

My favourite place for karak was Tea Time in Doha.

Sunset in Doha

The Architecture Tho

I’m not an architecture buff at all , and it’s never something I care about when I travel, but in Doha, I was obsessed.

The architecture here is amazing! There are so many interesting lines and curves on all of the buildings, and they made taking photos so much fun. I think I walked around Doha with my jaw constantly open, snapping photos of absolutely everything.

Qatar’s Carbon Emissions are Ugh

What a surprise! A skyscraper-filled country that’s one of the richest in the world, that’s all about the desert and high temperatures, emits a ton of carbon into the atmosphere. Shock. Ing.

It’s true: Qatar has the highest carbon emissions per capita of any country in the world. It’s not as outrageous as it sounds, though, as you need to take into account the country’s small population and the fact that much of its produced carbon is exported elsewhere in the world.

Benches in front of Doha's skyline

There Are Way More Men Than Women

For every one woman in Qatar, there are three men, making this a very man-dense country. It actually has the world’s highest male-to-female ratio, and it was definitely noticeable while I was walking around.

There’s a reason for this imbalance, though: 85% of the population in Qatar are expats, and the vast majority of these are men, who were building infrastructure for the upcoming World Cup. They’re treated appallingly in Qatar, abused and exploited and regarded as slaves, as you’ve undoubtedly seen in the news.

Qatar repeatedly promises labour reforms, and while there’s been progress, things are still looking bad. But that’s a topic for another blog post.

You Won’t Find Any Hills Here

It’s not exactly shocking, but the skyscrapers are the only place in Qatar that’ll allow you to gain some altitude.

While the Maldives wins the top spot for being the lowest country on the planet, Qatar is hot on its heels in second place. This is a country that’s seriously flat.

And greenery? Nope . There are only six countries in the world that don’t have a single forest on their land: Qatar, Oman, Nauru, Greenland, San Marino, and Gibraltar. Expect to see a hell of a lot of sand in Qatar and very few dunes.

Pool at Al Najada hotel in Doha, Qatar

You’re Going to Want to Cover Up

As with many conservative countries, you’re going to want to keep your knees and shoulders covered up, and you should keep your chest covered, too. I’d recommend also wearing loose clothing to draw less attention to yourself. This is the same for everyone, regardless of gender.

You can wear whatever you like in the hotels, though. I wore a bikini to the hotel pool, as did many of the guests.

You Can’t Bring Alcohol Into the Country

Qatar is an Islamic country and so alcohol is hard to come by. Fun fact: it’s totally prohibited to bring alcohol into the country, and there have been reports of people not being allowed into the country when they were found to be intoxicated when entering. I took a risk and opted for a glass of wine on my flight, then held my breath when I passed through immigration.

While you can’t bring alcohol into the country, you can still find it in a handful of places, like licensed hotel restaurants and bars, and expats in the country can get their hands on alcohol via a permit system. Keep in mind that drinking alcohol in public is banned, so it’s something to opt for in your hotel after a long day of sightseeing.

But not  too often. Earlier this year, Qatar implemented a Sin Tax that doubled the price of alcohol overnight. A bottle of gin can now cost as much as $100 in the country; a glass of beer $16.

I personally just avoided alcohol while I was in the country altogether, and I’d recommend doing the same. There’s always shisha.

As a Traveller, I Really Enjoyed Qatar

Visiting Qatar was such a pleasant surprise!

I wouldn’t name it my favourite country in the world, and it’s not a place I’d want to live in — or even spend more than a week in — but I still had a great time. If you ever get the chance to have a layover there, I’d recommend leaving the airport and spending a few days having a look around.

I loved the food, the architecture, the scents (of course), and the scenery. I’d totally return if I ever find myself needing to stopover in the Middle East in the future, which may just be in a few months.

Have you been to Qatar before? If not, would you like to go?

Brilliant post! I’m going to be flying from China to the UK early next year and think I will actually be able to take advantage of the stopover offer to check it out for myself :-)

Oh yay! There’s no reason not to when you get put up in a 5-star hotel for free!

Great post – I lived in Qatar for a 15 month contract and loved it! The slavery among the wealth is mind blowing….I have so many stories.. but overall it was a great experience. Its been five years, so I need to go back now to see all the finished projects there were ongoing for the world cup.

I’ve never really considered Qatar before now, but I loved this post and now I’m on Qatar Airways trying to figure out when I can go!

I am curious how you can acknowledge that Qatar is complicit in human rights abuses and slavery and yet still support the country though tourism and recommending others visit? I’ve seen a few travel bloggers/vloggers visit countries with some pretty problematic systems in place and while I know your trip wasn’t sponsored (which opens a whole other can of worms), I do wonder about your thought-process in advertising a country with ethics that run to counter your own beliefs (unless I’m mistaken and you’re fine with the issues going on there right now).

I don’t believe in travel boycotts, because once you boycott one country, you have to draw the line somewhere and 95% of countries do really shitty things.

If I boycotted Qatar, I’d have to boycott the U.S. for throwing children in cages, the U.K. for supporting Saudi Arabia in obliterating Yemen, Australia for sending refugees to detention centres in the middle of the South Pacific, Thailand for having a huge human-trafficking problem then throwing journalists on jail if they report on it, the 74 countries that jail/murder LGBT people. I’d have to boycott most technology companies for utilising child labour, most clothing companies for paying workers slave wages, thousands of companies that use palm oil…

So, where do I draw the line? And where do I even live? If I’d boycotted Qatar for being unethical, I’d have to boycott pretty much everywhere on the planet. Otherwise, I’d be saying I’m not okay with what Qatar is doing but Tanzania, Indonesia, Namibia, Morocco, Egypt throwing LGBT people in jail I’m cool with.

I won’t visit North Korea at this time because 100% of my money would go straight to the government, but when I can visit a country and ensure my money goes to local people and is donated to local charities, I think that’s okay. People aren’t their governments and all that. It’s definitely a tough subject, though.

Totally agree with you Lauren! Everywhere has their pros & cons.

If you dont want to go, dont go. Leave people alone.

The USA is a war criminal creating wars for decades in other countries in order to make money from its arms industry. The USA is responsible for the death of millions of Iraqis. The USA invades other countries to steal their resources. Look at how they exploit Congo today. We can also talk about how France and the UK are still exploiting African countries. I hope you will also tell people they should not travel to these evil countries.

My husband and I traveled through Qatar on our way to Thailand a few years ago. (It was to save a couple hundred dollars, but in hindsight not worth it to experience the longest available flight at the time.) I was bummed out that we had flown all that way but didn’t have a long enough layover to actually explore Qatar. I’m motivated to try it again, with a Qatar stop as the goal this time. There will need to be some sleeping aides involved for that flight, though!

Frankly speaking a day or even a few hours in Qatar would be more than enough. Not to say it’s not a beautiful and peaceful country.

Nice post Lauren!

We were actually offered the free layover in Qatar as we flew Qatar Airways from Berlin – Qatar – Bangkok – Bali – Qatar – Berlin. And I was all ready for the 5-star experience, free visa and personal driver. However, we had a few problems with the airline changing dates and times and accidentally ended up at the airport a few hours AFTER we were supposed to fly, and ended up buying new tickets to Korea instead! Eek!

We would very much like to go back again though ‘cos the little bit that we saw, was quite nice!

Oh no! That’s quite the dramatic story, haha. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you guys!

Hi Lauren, we hope see you again in Qatar.

I would love to return! I was actually planning to head back to Qatar earlier this year, but the coronavirus led to me cancelling my plans. I’m sure I’ll get back soon, though!

I live in Qatar many years now and I find it very hard to find things to like as a tourist. When I travel I seek to find among other things, tranquility, colours, be close to nature and new experiences. In Qatar one can be overwhelmed with the endless gray from industrial dust and sand as well as construction sites and noise everywhere. The sky is not blue here… The real experiences that you may enjoy in Qatar are malls and the desert and everything else I tried was poor to my standards. Even though there are other options for a tourist (such as the museum of Islamic arts) I can’t really say that someone can get a diverse experience. The population is predominantly labour immigrants from Asia (Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalis etc.) so there would be no local cultural elements to experience. I could go for hours but I would like to close by saying that today holidays are not easy to find. If someone selects a destination such as Qatar should be for the right reasons (and definately at the right time of the year as you mentioned) to avoid disappointment. One size does not fit all…

I enjoyed reading this post a lot. Lots of people visiting this country this year and it is interesting to see how it is changing.

I really enjoyed this article! Sounds like the perfect place for a quick vacation. My only problem is that there are no bridges from the U.S. to the Middle East. (Nor is there one to Hawaii.) And I don’t fly or boat. So I travel via writers who do their job well, I can ‘see’ the place, almost see and hear the sounds, smells. I’d love to try that tea… Is there an American equivalent? Thank you again for the tour. I would like to have seen the museum… ❤️. Suze

Oh, how interesting! I’m really glad you enjoyed the read :-) Can I ask why you don’t take flights or boats? If you have any Middle Eastern or Asian restaurants near you, you could definitely try the tea there! It’s pretty similar to India/Nepal’s masala chai, or Malaysia’s teh tarik. But if you’ve had a chai latte before, the flavours are similar here — just a bit sweeter and stronger.

Ultimate Qatar itinerary (1-7 days)

Ultimate Qatar itinerary (1-7 days)

In this ultimate Qatar itinerary we will tell you what to do in this beautiful country whether you have 1 or 7 days in Doha. We cover the best things in Doha city, the desert and some off the beaten track recommendations from locals to make sure you have lots to do in this little country we once called home.

Table of Contents

How to get around on this Qatar itinerary

Best Ways of Getting Around Doha / Getting Around Qatar

Best Ways of Getting Around Doha / Getting Around Qatar

The main ways to get around Doha are:

  • Careem or Uber.
  • Private Transportation

The cheapest ways to get around Doha are the Metro and buses. As a tourist I would recommend the Metro if you are looking for a cheap way to get around the city. The Metro is new and air conditioned which is definitely needed for those visiting Qatar in the Summer and is reliable. Buses really aren’t a great option for a tourist in Doha.

The taxis in Doha are called Karwas and are easily spotted by their colour and there is always a taxi rank at major tourist attractions. When I lived in Doha I would usually use the Karwa taxis instead of the app based taxis but that is my personal choice.

The other option is to hire a vehicle at the airport or at your hotel but the traffic in Doha can be challenging and may not suit everyone. If this is an option you wish to go down be sure to check the documentation you need before arrival.

For a more complete guide to your transportation options in Doha please click here.

Qatar Itinerary

Day 1 – museum, the dhow port and souq waqif .

If you only had one day in Doha and wanted to get a good idea about the city and country then this is the day I would chose to do.

The Museum of Islamic Art Doha Qatar - one of the best things to do in Doha at night and The Best Doha Tours and Day trips in Doha

The Museum of Islamic Art Doha Qatar – one of the best things to do in Doha at night and The Best Doha Tours and Day trips in Doha

I would start the day at either Museum of Islamic Art or the National Museum of Qatar which are both located on the Doha Corniche.

The Museum of Islamic Art is a beautiful building designed by I M Pei, which plays th symmetry and shadows and from a certain angle resembles a Qatari woman wearing a batoola (a traditional local face covering) inside explores the decorative arts relating to the Islamic world with items from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Highlight of the displays include carpet, pearls and armour.

Qatar itinerary

Qatar itinerary

This museum is probably more suited to those travelling without children as it is more suitable for an adult audience. Please note : the museum is closed and will be reopening in Autumn 2022 before the Qatar World Cup.

The other option would be to visit the National Museum of Qatar which tells you the history of the country from the nomadic and pearling days to the discovery of oil to contemporary life. There is also a gallery for children to explore which makes this a better option for those visiting Doha with kids . If you are interested in getting to know more about Qatar then this is definitely the museum for you.

Once you have finished at the museum we recommend taking a walk around the Museum of Islamic Art Park. It offers one of the best views of the Doha city skyline in my opinion and there is a cafe at the sealine which offers some of the best views in the whole of the city.

These museums are also one of the great free things to do in Qatar .

Once you have finished at the museums we recommend taking a stroll along the corniche to see the traditional Dhow port. Dhows are the traditional wooden boats of the area and boat rides are available if you are looking for something to do in Doha at night .

What to Buy in Qatar and Where to buy them

What to Buy in Qatar and Where to buy them

For your evening we recommend heading over to Souq Waqif, perhaps Doha’s most famous tourist attractions. Meaning Standing Market, the souq is a great place to go shopping especially for your Doha souvenirs . Here you can see spice souqs, the impressive gold souq, arts and crafts from the local area and grab a bite to eat. Our favourite place to eat in the Souq is Damasca One which has great balcony seating which gives you great views of the Souq and serves traditional Middle Eastern food. Alternatively we also love the Yemeni restaurant Bandar Aden which is the cheapest place you can eat in Souq Waqif.

Note : The Souq is definitely something to do in the evening as it is shut in the mornings and doesn’t really get going until the sun has gone down.

Day 2 – Mangroves, Al Khor and Katara

Qatar Itinerary

Qatar Itinerary

This day gets you out of Doha City and will require either your own vehicle or perhaps more preferable an organised tour.

This day requires an early start as you head out to the Mangroves at Al Khor.

Mangroves and Al Khor

The reason to head out of the city is to go and see some of Doha’s wildlife. The Al Khor Mangroves is famed for being a stop in the flamingo migration and they can usually be seen in January or February.

The best way to see them is via a kayaking tour. There are plenty of tours available such as XYZ.

Once you have visited the Mangroves, head back to your hotel to cool off and change before heading back out to Katara.

Katara

Katara is a cultural village in Qatar and is home to many of Qatar’s cultural festivals such as the Camel Festival usually held in February. It is a great place to wonder around with a museum and shops but also a great place to stop for dinner.

Day 3 – Visit the Desert

What to wear in Doha

The desert in Qatar

No visit to Qatar is complete without a visit to the desert.

Driving in the desert is an art form so even if you have a car we don’t recommend driving yourself. Instead use a local firm to do a half day or full day trip. These trips usually include a camel ride and dune bashing experience along with a BBQ meal.

Day 4  – Visit the Malls

The Middle East is a shopping paradise but even if shopping isn’t your thing the malls are still worth hitting during your stay. My favourite mall in Qatar is Villagio with its mock Venetian theme complete with gondola rides and a theme park but other favourites include Mall of Qatar and Festival City. There are lots of restaurants including some British and American Chains (Cheesecake Factory anyone?) and usually a theme park, soft play or ice rink to add extra entertainment.

Day 5  – Have a Beach Day

Where to Stay In Doha Qatar - Best Area to Stay in DOha

Where to Stay In Doha Qatar – Best Area to Stay in DOha

While Qatar might not rival the Caribbean or Maldives for pristine beaches many of the hotels will have a beach. If you hotel does not then we recommend buying a beach and pool day access at a hotel such as the Grand Hyatt or the Four Seasons. This is the ultimate in Qatar relaxation.

If you are visiting with kids then we recommend the Intercon (NOT the city one) as it has the most child friendly amenities and some great poolside restaurants.

Note: while Qatar has some public beaches  we recommend tourists using a hotel beach as these do not have the same dress code rules as their public counterparts.

Day 6 – Sheikh Faisal Museum and Camel Race Track

While Doha city has lots to see and do, it is worth getting out of the city again. The Sheikh Faisal Museum is one of my favourite museums in Qatar and has an eclectic mix of objects from American muscle cars to local artefacts which make it a great day out. As it is slightly out of the city it is worth pairing this trip with a visit to the Camel Race track located nearby.

Day 7  – Visit the Forts

While it may not have ancient monuments, Qatar does have some archaeological sites and some amazing forts.

The forts are a great way to find out some of this country’s history while seeing a different side to the Qatar landscape. For more information on how to get to the Qatar forts please click here.

Where to Stay in Doha

Enjoying the Gardens at La Veranda

For this itinerary, there is not one place that I recommend staying as it depends on your budget and what facilities you prefer your hotel to have. For a breakdown of areas and facilities check out our post on where to stay in Doha .

Things to Consider Before Travelling to Qatar

Things to consider when planning your Qatar itinerary that may affect opening hours and your ability to do outdoor activities. These are

  • Heat Summer gets VERY HOT. Be sure you are planning your day around the heat and take plenty of breaks
  • Ramadan Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting and during Ramadan many things will be closed during the day time and eating and drinking in public is forbidden, (although some five star hotels will have a hotel restaurant open but screened). Be sure to check when this is as if you are travelling to Doha during Ramadan it will greatly affect what you will be able to do.
  • Sports Day (usually the second Tuesday in February)
  • Eid al Adha and Eid al Fitr – as the Islamic calendar is lunar these holidays move year on year so be sure to check when they fall during your year of travel.

“Qatar does not have much history, it’s a new emirate. So I couldn’t draw on the history of the country; its history is really just being a desert. But I thought the one thing I must learn about for this project is the Islamic faith. So I read about Islam and Islamic architecture, and the more I studied the more I realized where the best Islamic buildings were.” – I M Pei, the architect of the Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha

Qatar Travel FAQs

Is qatar safe to visit.

Qatar is extremely safe to visit. It has a very low level of crime and violence and is, in fact, the 16th safest country in the world. It is quite safe for everybody including families, couples, solo men and women, as well as business travelers.

Qatar is also politically stable. Visitors should follow the usual travel precautions of respecting local customs, not bringing alcohol or pork products, not wandering alone at night, and being aware of their surroundings.

Located in the Middle East, Qatar is an Islamic country and follows Sharia laws. Qatar is also conservative.

Visitors must obey local laws and customs: alcohol is prohibited except in certain 5-star expat hotels and bars where it is served at very expensive rates.

Being drunk in public is a legal offense, for which you can be jailed. Men and women both should both dress conservatively but women are not required to cover their head.

Visitors should not criticize the ruling family or the emir and keep conversations limited to non-controversial subjects.

When is the best time to visit Qatar?

Qatar is located in the Middle East. Most of the country is a dry and arid desert. As a result, it gets very hot during the summer. From June to September, it is the low season.

The average temperature is above 40 C or 100 F. There is minimal rainfall during summer. If you do visit during the summer, we recommend drinking lots of water and not spending a lot of time outdoors at noon to avoid the extreme heat.

April to May in spring and October to November in fall is a great time to visit because of mild heat during the day and cool winds at night.

The best time to visit is however from December to March when day time temperature is pleasant.

It can, however, get pretty cold at night in the desert and we recommend dressing in layers and wearing a jacket or sweater for night time outdoor activities like the dhow cruise or camping in the desert.

Where to stay in Qatar?

We recommend basing yourself in Doha for the duration of your stay in Qatar.

You can easily see the attractions located outside of Doha via day trips by renting or hiring a car with a driver.

The best place to stay in Doha is easily inside the Souq waqif boutique hotels.

The Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels is a collection of 9 designer properties located inside the Souq. Each of these hotels has a variety of amenities and guests at one can avail of the amenities at other hotels as well.

But the best thing about Souq Waqif hotels is their location: you have the souqs shops, restaurants, and vibrant atmosphere at your doorstep.

Another option is to stay in close vicinity to Souq Waqif. There are a number of hotels in the area from where you can walk to the Souq and have a budget-friendly stay.

Alternatively, you can also stay along the Corniche where many of the international hotel brands are located.

Epic Qatar Itinerary for families, couples, and solo travelers

Day 1: museum of islamic arts, katara cultural village, souq waqif.

Start your day by seeing the highlights of Doha. Visit the famous Museum of Islamic Arts and see the Katara Cultural Village. End the day by shopping and dining in Qatar’s famed Souq Waqif.

Museum of Islamic Arts

The Museum of Islamic Arts (MIA) is one of Doha’s top tourist attractions. Designed by the renowned architect I M Pei of Louvre pyramid fame, the museum building is a beautiful work of art.

The museum is built on its own reclaimed piece of land on the Doha Bay and visitors have a beautiful view of the Doha skyline from the museum campus.

The museum is a modern take on the Islamic mosque style of architecture around the world and blends in the ancient Qatari style prominently seen in Souqs and elsewhere in the city.

The building’s upper air vents are designed to resemble a veiled Qatari woman.

The collection of Islamic Arts inside the museum is vast, diverse, and stunning. Museum has exhibits from all over the world including Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

You will find paintings, Islamic calligraphy, ancient Qurans, jewelry, ceramics, magnetic compasses, globes, jewelry, textiles, and a variety of everyday objects from ancient times.

These articles were created under Islamic rulers and show intricate Islamic patterns and motifs.

Also well represented are architectural elements including doors, windows, tiles, columns, wall panels, etc that are constructed and decorated in the Islamic style of architecture.

The museum interior is also spectacular with 5 storied grand windows that offer a memorable view of the Doha skyline across the water – my favorite view in all of Qatar!

We recommend dining in the museum café to take in this view. We ate delicious date cheesecake at the cafe and did not feel like leaving.

The museum garden and the outside courtyard of the building are also worth exploring. You should ideally keep aside at least 2 to 3 hours to explore the museum and its surroundings. Entrance to MIA is free and it is closed on Friday.

Katara Cultural Village

Katara Village is located between the West Bay skyline and the Pearl. Katara was the ancient name of Qatar and the complex is named after that.

The building design and architecture in Katara reflects Qatar’s heritage. The area is open 24/7 and holds many events including the Doha Film Festival.

We recommend walking in Katara and admiring the architecture, especially the Katara mosque, viewing art galleries, and spending time on the beach.

You can also see many local artists, check out the amphitheater, and the maritime museum. Katara also has many fine-dining restaurants including Middle Eastern, Indian, Italian, and many more.

Souq Waqif is located across the MIA. The name Souq Waqif literally means a standing market. This is an ancient Qatari market that has been recently restored and has become Doha’s premier tourist attraction.

Inside you will find police patrolling on horses and porters carrying purchases on wheelbarrows – it’s like walking back in time. The market has narrow alleys and shops selling a variety of goods from souvenirs, antiques, perfumes, spices, and household goods.

The Souq is an excellent place to shop. We spent a lot of time in Souq Waqif during our time in Qatar and loved exploring the market. To know more about the market, read our post on 22 Epic things to do in Souq Waqif .

The main thoroughfare of Souq Waqif is full of restaurants – this is a great area to dine in Qatar. You will find restaurants for all budgets and cuisines – Qatari, Syrian, Lebanese, Moroccan, Iraqi, and even Italian.

You can buy fava beans, chestnuts, and pasta from food carts and eat Turkish style ice cream. This main street also has money changers and souvenir shops. You can people-watch here for hours and be happy.

However, we also recommend exploring beyond Main Street and in the alleys where the locals shop. There you will find household goods, apparel, and even a gold souq.

The Souq also has a camel pen and horse stables – our son loved seeing the animals. The Souq also has a separate area known as the Pet Souq where you can find all sorts of pet animals including birds, rabbits, tortoises, and aquatic animals.

The Falcon Souq located next to Souq Waqif is dedicated to selling falcons and falconry supplies. This is a great place to understand the Qatari tradition of falconry. If visiting the Falcon Souq, read our article on everything you need to know about the falcon souq .

Here’s a tip: many of the porters, salesmen, taxi drivers, and other workers in Souq Waqif are from the Indian subcontinent and especially India – if you know Hindi (one of the Indian languages) – you can have a much better conversation with them in Hindi than English.

We got better deals when bargaining in Souq Waqif simply because we spoke the language and were able to pet the Arabian horses in the stables near the Falcon Souq.

Day 2: Sheikh Faisal Al Thani Museum, Doha Corniche, Dhow cruise

Visit the unique Sheikh Faisal Al Thani museum and see the camel races at the nearby Al-Shahaniya racetrack. End the day by walking along the Corniche, exploring West Bay skyline and taking a dhow cruise.

Sheikh Faisal Al Thani museum

This privately owned museum was opened by Sheikh Faisal Al Thani and showcases his private collection.

The museum is built in an ancient Qatari fort and has exhibits ranging from Islamic artwork, textiles, manuscripts, coins from various time periods, vintage cars, bikes, pearling equipment, wooden dhows, and other artifacts.

You will also find an entire Syrian house inside the museum. The Sheikh collected the items over 50 years.

The museum also has plans for a separate car museum and carpet exhibit area in the future.

The car collection will have over 600 vintage and classic cars, motorbikes,  guns, artillery, and more while the carpet collection will feature hand-woven rugs with Islamic motifs.

You can visit the museum on your own or request a special guided tour with an English-speaking guide. We recommend spending about 2 hours viewing the collection.

The museum is located about an hour out of Doha, so we suggest either driving there or keeping your taxi waiting while you see the collection, as it’s hard to find a return taxi.

Al Shahaniya Racetrack

Watching the camel races at Al Shahaniya Racetrack is one of the most unique things to do while in Qatar. The Al Shahaniya Racetrack is located near the Al Thani museums and you can do both in one morning.

The best time to visit the racetrack for a chance to see the camel races is on Friday during the winter months (November – February), when there are national and international tournaments being held. Races are also often held every day during the season.

Camel racing is one of the most expensive sports in the world and also the most unique. Camels are usually handled by robot jockeys. It is fascinating to see the camels and their kid-sized jockeys at work.

The robotic jockeys are remote-controlled; their operators drive cars around the track and control operations as needed.

Watching the races is a free and fun activity. If you can’t visit during the race season, then try visiting in the morning around 9 am when the camels are exercised every day.

The Corniche

The Doha Corniche is the city’s waterfront promenade along the Doha Bay. It begins at the Museum of Islamic Arts and continues for over seven kilometers.

Along the promenade, you will find beautifully landscaped walking paths, sculptures and monuments, and public gardens. At the other end, you will find the iconic Sheraton hotel with its pyramid shape.

From the Corniche, you can see excellent views of the Doha West Bay business district skyline – this is one of the best places to photograph the Doha skyline.

Many of Doha’s premier landmarks are located along the Corniche. The Corniche is connected by an underground walkway to Souq Waqif.

Some of the popular sculptures along the Corniche include the Pearl Monument (devoted to Qatar’s pearling history), murals, Richard Serra’s 7 sculptures near the MIA, and Orry – the mascot of the Asian Games in 2006.

This is a great place to people watch; you will be able to see Qatari families having picnics and playing with their children along the Corniche. We recommend walking along the Corniche at sunset and enjoying the spectacular views.

If you walk towards the far end of the Corniche, near the West Bay skyline, you will be able to see the beautiful teapot sculpture. We loved this intricate marble sculpture and had a nice picnic beneath its shade.

Dhow Cruise

End your day with a dhow cruise on the Doha Bay. Many traditional wooden dhows line up along the promenade near the Museum of Islamic Arts end of the Corniche.

The boats can take you on a sail around the bay and you can see Doha city from the water. The views of the skyline from the water are beautiful and the wooden dhow cruise is a very romantic experience.

The sunset cruise is one of the best – Doha’s skyscrapers are ablaze with the glow of the setting sun and the wooden dhow boats have their twinkling lights on while some others also have music to compliment the atmosphere.

You can also opt for a dinner cruise aboard the dhow boat.

Day 3: Al Thakira Mangroves, Barzan Towers, Villagio Mall, Aspire Park

Kayak the mangroves of Al Thakira. View the Barzan Towers in Doha. End the day by shopping in Villagio Mall and spending time in Aspire Park while taking in views of the Aspire Tower.

Al Thakira mangroves

If you thought Qatar was all about the desert, you are in for a surprise. Al Thakira mangroves located north of Al Khor is a vast expanse of greenery.

At Al Thakira, you will find lots of migrating birds including flamingos, herons, fish, crabs, and more. Al Thakira has lush green mangrove forests and is an excellent respite from the starkness of the desert.

The best way to explore the mangroves and wildlife at Al Thakira is via a guided kayak tour.

The kayaking trips are usually about an hour to 90 mins long and experienced guides will guide you through the mangrove forests. Many tour operators can organize this half-day kayak excursion for you.

Barzan Towers

An off-the-beaten-path destination in Qatar, you won’t find many other tourists near the Barzan Towers. The Barzan Towers are historic watchtowers in Qatar’s northern desert.

Built in the late 19th century, these served the dual purposes of keeping watch over the enemy in the desert and observing the night sky. The towers are architecturally minimalist and striking and blend in the desert environment.

The buildings have been restored in 2003 and are in great condition. Inside the tower complex, you will find a small mosque and visitor center but apart from that, there is not much to see.

The towers make for striking photographs and are a great way to spend a few hours in the desert. The Umm Salal Fort is also located close to the watchtowers but is closed to visitors.

Villagio Mall

After your trip to the mangroves and the desert watchtowers, spend the rest of your day in the Aspire Zone.

Villagio Mall located in the Aspire Zone has over 200 branded stores and is a great place to shop, dine, and people-watch. Apart from shopping, the Villagio Mall is most famous for its Italian inspiration and indoor canals with gondolas, reminiscent of Venice.

With its lit up blue sky ceiling interior, it reminded us of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Inside the Villagio Mall, you will also find other attractions including the food court, ice hockey rink, indoor playground, cinema, and bowling alleys.

Aspire Park and Aspire Tower

After spending time at the Villagio Mall, visit the famous Aspire Tower and Aspire Park. The Aspire Tower is also known as the Torch, Doha and is one of the most photographed buildings in the city for its spiral architecture.

The Aspire Tower is currently the tallest building in Doha and looks exceptionally beautiful when lit up at night.

Aspire Park located next to the Aspire Tower in the Aspire Zone is Doha’s largest urban park. This is a great place to take an evening stroll, have picnics, play games with the children, and fly kites.

The park has fountains, playground area, cafe, and a lake as well as many unique trees and vegetation including the exotic baobab trees imported from Argentina.

Day 4: Desert safari at Al Khor Udeid

For an unparalleled desert experience, venture out into the desert at Al Khor Udeid and enjoy a day full of dune bashing, desert safari, camel rides, swimming in the inland sea, and relaxing by the beach.

Al Khor Udeid is the most popular day trip from Doha and you can find a variety of tours to satisfy you. There are half and full-day safaris: the half-day safaris do not include lunch while the full-day safaris include traditional Bedouin lunch in the desert.

You can also opt for a tour that includes night camping in a Bedouin tent and enjoy the stillness of the desert at night. There are also sunset desert safaris – these are especially popular with couples. Here are the highlights of these tours:

4 by 4 vehicle Safari and sandboarding

The 4 X $ desert safari and dune bashing ride is the highlight of the trip for most people. Tour operators will take you up and down the desert sand dunes at high speeds, resulting in an adventurous ride.

Visitors also can sandboard down the dunes for a thrilling activity. Sandboarding is quite popular with kids and teens. The tour companies will provide the sand boards for free.

Camel ride, falcon handling, and photographing the desert

You can also opt for an additional camel ride and experience the desert life in a traditional way. The camel ride is quite bumpy and enjoyed by children.

Sitting astride a camel as it gets up is an equally fun and scary experience – totally memorable!

During the day, you will also be able to handle a falcon under the supervision of the tour operator and take a photo with a falcon on your hand. Throughout the day, you will have innumerable opportunities to photograph the desert landscape.

Swimming in the inland sea

You can also spend time on the beach and relax in the inland sea. The Inland Sea is located at the border with Saudi Arabia and is a beautiful natural wonder in Qatar.

Here the desert meets the Arabian Gulf creating a panoramic and scenic landscape. At high tide, the sea is created among the dunes and is an amazing experience.

Camping in the desert

Day visits and night stays will be often accompanied by BBQ buffet lunch or dinners, shisha, and resting in the Bedouin tent. The desert is beautiful at night and tranquil.

You can rest by a bonfire and may even have the opportunity to enjoy Arabian music under the stars – depending on your tour operator.

Overall, we highly recommend the desert safari to have a memorable time in the desert.

Day 5: Zekreet Peninsula, East-West sculpture, Al-Zubarah Fort

Drive out into the desert near the Zekreet peninsula and see the East-West / West-East sculpture by artist Richard Serra. Stop at the Film City ghost town and admire the abandoned buildings. Visit Qatar’s only UNESCO Site of Al-Zubarah Fort. End your day by relaxing at the Pearl.

Zekreet Peninsula

Zekreet peninsula located in western Qatar is another exciting day trip from Doha. It is just an hour away from the city.

Zekreet peninsula has unique geographical landforms including the half moon shaped bay of Zekreet, unspoiled beaches, mushroom rocks, and limestone escarpments.

The Zekreet peninsula also has lots of wildlife including ostrich, wild deer, gazelles, flamingos, the Arabian oryx which is Qatar’s national animal.

Zekreet is also a popular destination for camping. Here are some of the most popular things to do in Zekreet peninsula.

East West / West East sculpture

Apart from the sculpture ‘Seven’ near the Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha, American sculptor Richard Sierra has another modern art installation in the Zekreet peninsula of Qatar.

The East-West / West-East sculpture consists of 4 steel plates rising out of the sand and dominating the sky. The steel plates are between 48 ft and 55 ft high and are level at the top.

Visitors can touch the plates and marvel at this unique artwork. The highway doesn’t reach the sculpture and you will need to off-road over the sand to visit. Hence, we recommend visiting with a tour guide.

Film City ghost town

The Film City ghost town is an abandoned city that was built for a movie set and now lies empty and unused.

The fortified city has towers and gates but is completely uninhabited; it is one of the most unusual sights in the middle of the desert.

You can enter the Film City, take photos, and talk with the guards before making your way around the peninsula.

Natural Wildlife Reserve

The Al Reem Biosphere Reserve is located in the Zekreet peninsula.

This is a UNESCO protected area has plenty of unique desert flora and fauna including the endangered oryx, gazelle, osprey, flamingos, and more.

Wildlife sightings are unfortunately not that common but if you are lucky, you may spot an oryx.

Al-Zubarah Fort and Archeological Site

The Al-Zubarah fort and ruins of the nearby walled town of Al Zubarah are Qatar’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located by the shore in Northwest Qatar, the coastal town was a flourishing pearling village and important trade center on the Persian Gulf in the 18th century.

Al Zubarah traded goods with Asian subcontinent and the Middle East through routes in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf before it was destroyed and abandoned in the 19th century.

At the archeological site of Al Zubarah, you can see the preserved remains of houses, streets, mosque, fortified walls, and the harbor. The site is currently closed to the public since excavation is taking place.

The Al Zubarah fort overlooks the town but was built much later in 1938. It is fascinating to visit the fort and the village and understand Qatar’s importance in pearl trading.

Inside the fort, you will find a museum with archeological artifacts, maps, and other historical exhibits about the area’s history.

Al Zubarah is an hour away from Doha and you will need a car or tour to visit. We recommend renting a car or hiring car + driver for the entire day and visit Zekreet and Al Zubarah together.

If you don’t wish to spend the entire day in the desert, then consider a luxurious day trip to the Pearl. You can also visit Pearl in the evening after checking out Zekreet and Al Zubarah during the day.

The Pearl Qatar is an artificial island with office and commercial space, lavish seaside villas, luxurious hotels, residential communities, and apartment buildings, upscale shopping, fine restaurants serving international cuisines, cafes, and bakeries.

Pearl is the ultimate urban oasis and makes you forget that you are in the Middle East.  This area is extremely popular with ex-pats, tourists, and locals alike.

We recommend visiting the Pearl and walking along the seaside as well as inside the Pearl. Do some window shopping and dine in one of the cafes or restaurants. Visit areas such as Little Venice (designed like Italy) and just people watch.

Day 6: Souvenir shopping in Souq Waqif and relaxing spa massage in Doha

On your final day in Qatar, we recommend visiting Souq Waqif again to buy souvenirs, eat some more of Qatari cuisine, and catch up with the activities that you might have missed on an earlier visit.

Some of the best souvenirs to buy in Qatar include the Arabian tea and coffee pots, entire tea sets with cups and saucers, shishas, apparel including bejeweled dresses for women, shawls, and capes, oud perfumes, dry fruits including dates, baklavas, and other sweets.

You can also opt for traditional magnets, postcards, and other souvenirs.

In the afternoon, we recommend getting a luxurious spa massage in Doha.

Did you know, Doha has some of the best spa resorts in the world? Most of these resorts also accommodate day guests and you can even avail most of the resort amenities on a half-day or full-day trip.

Some of the best spas in Doha include the Anantara Spa at the Banana Island Resort and the Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village and Spa.

Such an amazing place with a rich history! I’d like to explore that museum more. I’m a bit nerd for history and historical sites, too!

I think Qatar looks and sounds like an incredible place to visit. Hopefully one day! Great article and awesome photos…thanks for sharing!

I’m all about visiting this section of the world and your article gives me even more reason to want to visit. I hope one day it will be possible to do so. With current geo-political tensions, it’s still on my list but on hold slightly. Your article is great and your photos are wonderful!

I had no idea that Hindi was spoken so widely in Qatar! Sadly I don’t speak hindi or Arabic, so no horse-petting for me 🙁 I love markets though, I think I’d be happy just wandering around!

Qatar definitely looks like a fascinating place, a meeting of cultures and architecture to be sure! Some day I would love to explore the Middle East, and it’s rapidly changing cities like Doha!

Wow! There is so much to see and do! Did you know that in this country, they toast with water for weddings? I learned about this years ago because I’m obsessed with weddings and I don’t drink alchohol so I thought this was the coolest ever and would love to visit!

I love that the government is making such a concerted effort to preserve Bedouin heritage throughout Qatar – sounds like a really authentic destination – reminds me a lot of neighboring Dubai but without the mass tourism and western influence. The Museum of Islamic Art sounds really interesting – such a beautiful building too – I adore that staircase!!

I’ve never really thought about going to Qatar, but I have been to Oman and U.A.E. The souqs are one of my favourite parts of those countries. Thanks for the detailed itinerary.

Excellent artical , do you have to book hotels and tours through Qatar Airways for transit visa ? Otherwise do you require a local sponsor for visa ? The information on there website is confusing ( for Indian citizens )

Sachin, if you are traveling via Qatar Airways and have a stopover in Doha then you receive the visa free of cost. You just need a ticket into Qatar and an onward flight ticket, both tickets have to be on Qatar Airways. You also need to provide a copy of passports. The entire application can be completed online at Qatar Airways website. You can book hotels/cars/tours on your own. The visa won’t apply if you have a India-Qatar round trip ticket. It is an excellent stopover if traveling from US-India.

Is Doha worth visiting?

Doha certainly is worth visiting whether you have 1 day or a few days and there are many things to do in Doha and things to do in Qatar to keep you busy!

To help you plan your Doha itinerary, I suggest thinking about what attracts you do the city of Doha and the country of Qatar?

  • Are you interested to see what there is post-world cup in Doha?
  • Do you want to experience the traditional areas of the city like the Souq and Dhow boats?
  • Do you want to enjoy the Middle Eastern heat and relax on a beach or hit up a waterpark?
  • Do you want to get out into nature and experience the desert , sand dunes and smaller towns and cities in Qatar?
  • Are you in Doha are just a few hours on a stopover in Qatar ?

Although Qatar is small, the city of Doha is fairly big and you can’t do everything, especially with just a few days in Qatar so it’s good to know what your priorities for.

For example, I spent my full 3 days in Doha in the city and I didn’t go to any beaches, islands or the desert, but you may want to go to one of these places!

If you have 3 days in Doha but you’re only looking to sightsee for 1 day, have a look at my 1 day in Doha itinerary for a Doha stopover!

Qatar Travel Tips

QATAR WEEKEND – The Weekend in Qatar is Friday & Saturday so Muslims can have their holy day of Friday off work. Saturday was the first day of my trip and I definitely found the city much busier than Sunday and Monday, so keep this in mind when planning your Qatar itinerary.

ARAB TIME – Generally, Arab countries stay up late and this includes many of the Qatar attractions being open later too, including malls and places to eat. So if you have jet leg that makes getting up in the morning hard, don’t worry about starting your day late and ending it late! Do as the locals do!

THE HEAT – November to March is the best time to visit Qatar due to the cooler temperatures, although daytime temperatures are still very high and pleasant. March to October with the summer months in particular are extremely hot in Qatar (and hotter than other countries nearby like the UAE) so keep this in mind when planning what to do in Qatar. This is another reason why locals stay up late!

MONEY – I managed to use my UK bank card for 95% of everything I bought and paid for in Doha which was really handy. I had to pay in cash at the shops in Souq Wafiq but as they packaged up what I brought I just went to the ATM nearby to take out the right cash. This was really handy as I didn’t have to figure out the notes or get too much cash out and not end up needing it.

WHAT TO WEAR – Qatar is a Muslim country but it is very international too. Read my post on what to wear in Qatar to help you with the Qatar dress code!

How to get around Doha

Read my full post on getting around Doha by metro, bus and taxi here !

How to use public transport in Doha

I l oved the public transport in Doha. The metro covers a lot of the city , is well connected and is in pristine condition to use. Where the metro doesn’t cover, the bus system is likely to cover.

Plus, metro tickets in Doha are very cheap and there is a 6 QAR cap per day which is about £1.40 at the time of writing this and each trip is 2 QAR, about £0.44p

Just google ‘Doha Metro Map’ to find a copy and save it to your phone.

Best taxi to use in Doha

I took quite a few taxi’s in Doha. They have Uber but I got on better with the app Karwa Taxi . I set up an account when I arrived, I couldn’t add my UK bank card but I was still able to pay by card at the end of every taxi I took.

I didn’t find Doha too hard to walk around, in many places there are pavements but it is a big, and hot, city so it’s fine to walk in some areas but you don’t want to be walking the length of the city.

Karwa taxi, Doha itinerary, Qatar itinerary,

Hop-On Hop-Off Bus in Doha

If you are limited on time on your Doha itinerary or just don’t fancy working out the metro . I highly suggest getting a ticket for the Doha Hop-On Hop-Off Bu which will take you around the city to all the top Doha tourist attractions and the ticket is valid for 24 hours.

The Hop-On Hop-Off Bus has designated stops at Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village, the Pearl and National Museums, these are all of the top places to visit in Doha and with the help of this bus you can visit them all in 1 day! You’ll also get an audio guide to help understand where you are visiting!

Check out tickets here on Get Your Guide!

3 Days in Doha

To get the most out of your trip to Doha, I recommend breaking the city up into areas and seeing each area each day.

This is what I always suggest to do because otherwise you spend half your time travelling the length of the city which is not only time consuming but exhausting.

For example, Lusail, in the very North of Doha is best to be paired with The Pearl and Katara Village as they are all in the same area, whereas Souq Waqif, the National Museum of Qatar and Islamic Museum of Art are best to be paid together as they are all close by.

Map of Doha

I have added everywhere I suggest visiting in this Doha itinerary blog post into this map, this way you can see the areas of the city that have the most Doha attractions and focus on an area a day.

Doha Day Tours

If you fancy seeing the city with a local guide , which is great if you are a bit nervous about being in a Arabic city or are limited on time , have a look into these options to help make your trip much more smooth and deep!

Qatar Itinerary | Day 1

I arrived into Doha Airport the night before and ideally, you will do the same so you can enjoy a full first day in Doha.

Coming from the UK to the Gulf, I always find myself extra tired in the morning and if this happens to you, don’t fear as Arab countries generally stay up later , especially in the summer months, and many of the things to do in Doha will be open later too, so don’t worry if your day starts late, and ends late.

Souq Waqif, Museums, Corniche & Dhow Boats

I recommend starting your day in the Southern part of the city as you will get a real taste of Doha, Qatari culture and incredible views to start your trip!

National Museum of Qatar

Open from 9:00 – 19:00 (and from 13:30 on Fridays) the National Museum of Qatar is a great way to start your Doha itinerary!

It has it’s own metro station so it’s really easy to get to and you will be impressed straight away by the architecture, the cleanliness and the amazing technology of this museum which is basically a welcome to what else is to come with your 3 days in Qatar!

It’s also a great way to understand the country of Qatar , it’s history and people before fully starting your trip.

outside of National Museum of Qatar, Doha itinerary, Qatar itinerary,

Everyone loves Souq Waqif and it got so much attention during the World Cup!

Souk’s are one of the main reasons people love visiting Middle Eastern countries but these days I find, many Souks are too touristy, with sellers that are pressuring, or they are for locals and intimidating for tourists.

This is why Souq Waqif is so great ! It’s a really good size, without being intimidating , locals go there but it’s very welcoming to tourists . The sellers are not pushy and do speak good English.

streets in Souk Waqif, Doha itinerary, Qatar itinerary,

Take some time on day 1 of your Doha itinerary to wander the indoor and outdoor streets of the Souq. Get a Karak , Tea Time Souq Waqif is a popular place to get one ( google maps link here ), and be sure to go inside the Souq Waqif Art Centre , it’s only small but it’s free to enter and is so beautiful.

For some quick and cheap food, go to Shawarma Station ! I had the best Chicken Shawarma here!

Note that the Souq closes from 2:00-3:00 pm . All the food places stay open and some shops stay open but generally, most shops close and the streets are cleaned so if you end up there at this time, get some food and relax until 3:00 pm.

Souq Waqif Guided Tour

If you want to get a deeper understand of the Souq and Qatari Culture, I recommend a half day tour with a private guide where you’ll start in Souq Waqif and then be taken to other top Doha places to visit like the Pearl and Katara Cultural Village.

Check prices and availability for a half day private city tour here!

Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center (Fanar Masjid)

If you are Muslim or you are interested in Islam and seeing mosques. From Souq Waqif you can’t miss the spiral building popping out behind the Souq streets and this is Fanar Mosque .

It is a centre for people to learn about Islam with people to talk to and of course prayer areas.

Doha Corniche

The Corniche in Doha is pretty big and it’s unlikely you’ll see all of it on your trip, but I loved the section which is just across the road from Souq Waqif where the Museum of Islamic Art is.

The city skyline from here is so incredible, especially with the traditional Dhow boats in-front!

Head to ‘ The Pearl Monument ‘ on Google maps for some great photo opportunities.

Museum of Islamic Art

Next up on your list of things to do in Doha should be the Museum of Islamic Art .

Even if you are not interested in Islam, this is still a great place to visit as the building is really impressive and there are many art pieces and architects from around the world.

Qatar Museum Pass

Qatar offer a museum pass which gives access to 5 museums and is valid over 5 days . I suggest buying this at your first museum and then your other museum visits will feel free and it will encourage you to see more to make the most of it. Click here to see the full list .

One of the best parts of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is the city skyline view from the courtyard area with the big arches! This is one of the top places to go in Doha!

Remember that inside areas like museums are well air conditioned so if you are looking for things to do in Doha in the heat, going inside museums is a great idea!

Dhow Boat Cruise

The Dhow boats are the traditional sailing vessels in Qatar and as you walk along the Corniche you’ll see them all in the harbour.

You can take a dhow boat ride as one of the things to do in Doha which will offer a spectacular view of the city skyline , especially at sunset.

I saw many guys offering Dhow Boat rides around the area of the Museum of Islamic Art so there’s no need to book one in advance , just go down here, negotiate a price and head out on one!

Note – I’m not 100%, but I’m pretty sure they will only accept cash.

As evening approaches, MIA Park right next to the museum starts getting busy with locals enjoying the cooler temperatures and this is when you should do as the locals do!

There are a few food and drink stalls in the park. I got a Karak and Chapati and took it down to the waters edge to watch the sun setting over the city and it was such a beautiful way to end my first day in Doha.

Souq Waqif at night

The Souq area has a great atmosphere at night so for what to do in Doha at night, be sure to head back there if you are still in the area, get some dinner sat outside and take in the local market areas that seem to pop up once the sun sets, especially on the weekend.

Is Doha safe at night?

On this note, Doha is a very safe city . One of the big pieces of feedback from the World Cup was how safe women felt so don’t be worried about being out in the dark in Doha, especially if it’s still before midnight and there are many people and families around you.

Night Tour of Doha

As mentioned, Doha opens up in the evening as most Middle Eastern cities do so there’s no better time, especially in the summer when the temperature cools at night, to go on a tour with a guide !

This highly rated private Doha night city tour takes you from Souks to Skyscrapers in just a few hours and transports you in an air conditioned vehicle with a local guide. This is a perfect option if you have limited time in Doha!

Qatar Itinerary | Day 2

Katara cultural village, the pearl, lusail.

Today is the day to explore the more Northern parts of Doha on your Qatar itinerary.

If you are a bit limited on time with just 3 days in Qatar as I was,

I recommend starting at Katara Cultural Village and working your way North because by the time you get to Lusail in the evening, there will be more going on as they have night markets and night shows in Lusail.

Katara Cultural Village

Katara Metro Station will take you right into Katara Cultural Village and the area is open all day and free to enter.

Here are things to do in Katara Cultural Village but I recommend visiting the Blue Mosque (read my post on what to wear in Doha for mosque attire), getting a Karak from Chapati & Karak , heading to the beach and renting a kayak or boat if you wish and enjoying the other restaurants and shops within the facility.

Katara Cultural Village entrance, Doha itinerary, Qatar itinerary

The Pearl area of Doha is so iconic to the city. The Pearl Marina is full of expensive yachts and Qanat Quartier is like a fake Venice but tastefully done!

Many expats live in this area as you’ll see from the big apartment tower blocks and it’s kind of crazy to think that people do live here!

Anyway, to get to the Pearl by public transport, you need to take the metro to Legtaifiya Station and get a bus from outside . I used google maps to help me with the bus number as there is no metro station on the Pearl.

The Pearl Marina

To see the marina and walk around it, find ‘ Qatar Dragon Boat ‘ on google maps and head towards here. This will take you to a nice pedestrian walkway with plenty of places to sit, plus many cafes and restaurants.

Qanat Quartier Canals

If you’re like me, you’ll want to see this colourful part of Doha with canals because it’s easily one of the best places to visit in Doha!

Looking at Google Maps, it can be hard to work out exactly where this area is, find ‘ Qanat Quartier Canal, The Pearl ‘ and ‘ The Breakfast Club ‘ on Google Maps and this will take you to the exact area you see in my photos below.

Qanat Quartier canals in doha with blue sky, Doha itinerary, Qatar itinerary

There are many places to eat and drink around here but do be prepared for higher prices in the cafes and restaurants as this is a fancier part of the city. I had brunch at Volume Cafe which had seating right by the water and was really nice!

For more ideas on what to do in Doha and things to do at the pearl in Doha , you can take a boat ride around the canals . This would be a fun thing to do with children in Doha as they are very relaxed rides.

If you fancy meeting a guide on the Pearl to check out the best places to eat on the Pearl and have a boat ride , check out this awesome tour :

Next on your Doha itinerary, head up to Lusail!

Lusail is actually it’s own city , and not part of Doha city, which I didn’t realise until I’d finished my Doha trip! But due to its geographical location to the rest of Doha, it does feel part of it!

Lusail is very new and there’s a lot going on!

Lusail marina, Doha itinerary, Qatar itinerary,

Lusail Katara Hotel Towers

One of the most iconic buildings in Doha / Qatar now and one of the best places to see in Doha is this crescent moon shaped building which is known as the Katara Towers and the Lusail Katara Hotel!

The best way to see it is to go to the Lusail Marina Promenade , the closest metro station is Marina Promenade and you’ll get a great view of the building across the water!

Lusail Katara Hotel across the water, Doha itinerary, Qatar itinerary,

Lusail Night Markets

One of the best things to do in Doha is visiting the Lusail night markets, especially for things to do in Doha at night . Some markets are open in the day time, and here is a full list of food trucks at the Lusail night markets .

The night markets are also best accessed from Marina Promenade station and the views across the water from here are so incredible day and night.

Lusail Winter Wonderland

For more things to do in Doha at night, and things to do in Doha with kids , check out if the winter wonderland is still on.

It’s first season was around the World Cup and it continued on throughout the winter months . I imagine it will close for summer but if you are visiting Doha from November to March, check here if it’s open again!

Place Vendome Mall

Lastly, you should definitely plan a visit to Vendome Mall ( google maps link here ) on your Doha itinerary!

The gulf is all about the malls and the malls in Doha are seriously something else ! They are so big, so clean and pretty empty if you compare them to shopping centres in the UK and elsewhere in the world!

And as I say in my Riyadh guide , in the Gulf, going to a mall is experiencing local life , so don’t think you can’t go to shopping centre on a trip like this, you can and should check one out!

Place Vendome Mall is the newest mall in Doha and it is huge at 1,150,000 square metres. The architecture from the outside looks like a hotel or state building because it’s inspired by classic French-style architecture which is why I’m suggesting it as one of the top places to see in Doha on your Qatar itinerary!

Walking through the fancy entrance doors from the metro station ( Lusail Central station ) made me feel like I was walking into a building I shouldn’t be going in as it was so huge and fancy , but then I saw H&M and Zara!

Outside in the courtyard they do a dancing fountain show . It’s on the hour every hour during the day and every half hour in the evenings. It feels like a mix of Caesars Palace in Vegas and a mini Dubai!

Villaggio Mall

For another really cool mall in Doha, check out Villaggio Mall because it looks like Venice inside ! There are a few ‘Venice mall’s in the world including Las Vegas and Macau so its pretty cool to see one here in Doha too! The shopping is good too!

Qatar Itinerary | Day 3

Desert tour, banana island or seeing missed parts of city.

Today is a great day to get out of the city of Doha on your Qatar itinerary, or stay in the city, re-visit parts you loved or go to places you missed in your first 2 days in Doha.

Desert Day Trip

You are in a Desert country so why not make the most of it but going out on a desert half-day tour from Doha .

You might have been on a desert evening tour in Dubai, or Abu Dhabi, and the Qatar desert tours seem quite similar. They are touristy but an easy trip to do and a lot of fun !

Because tourism in Qatar isn’t as popular as the likes of the UAE, many of the desert tours will offer private tours and only a few offer shared tours .

The benefit to shared tours of course is that the cost will be lower, but if there are a few of you then a private tour could work well!

Get picked up at your hotel and head out into the desert of Qatar for some dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding and a traditional Qatari dinner with entertainment !

Here are the most highly rated SHARED tours to the desert from Doha:

Safari, Camel Ride, Sandboarding and Inland Sea Tour

Banana Island Day Trip

If you can’t bear going to this part of the world with the heat and sun and not spend some time at the beach or swimming , look into Banana Island and add it to your Qatar itinerary!

When it comes to beaches in Qatar, there are 2 types of beaches, public and hotel beaches .

On public beaches, women and men must wear modest clothing and swimming attire, whereas in the hotel beaches people can wear bikinis, swimsuits, swim shorts etc. So when it comes to sunbathing in Qatar , unless you are staying in a hotel with a beach, you will need to look for a hotel with a beach you can visit for the day.

Day trips to Banana Island from Doha are popular because the island is so close by .

The boat terminal to get to Banana Island is close to Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art. It’s called Al Shyoukh Terminal and the boat is just 20 minutes from Downtown Doha to Banana Island.

Anantara Hotels run Banana Island Resort and they offer a day pass for it’s pool, beaches and money towards it’s restaurants which you can view here and here is some more information on how to do a day trip to Banana Island from Doha by a local travel blogger.

Hotels with a beach in Doha

If beach days in Doha are what you are after, look into booking a hotel with a beach, this way you can go as you please and wear what you want! Look into hotels with a beach in Doha on booking.com here !

Here are some more hotels with private beaches in Doha so you know you can wear what you want on the beach!

  • Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara
  • Sheraton Grand Doha Resort
  • Sharq Village & Spa, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel
  • InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa, an IHG Hotel
  • Waldorf Astoria Lusail, Doha
  • Four Seasons Hotel Doha

hey,Ellie you have written so impressive article.Your articles provide practical advice and much tips that truly enhance the travel experience.it give me so many thoughts when i visited lastly.

Wander-Lush

When I was planning my first visit to Qatar, I imagined myself souq shopping by day, strolling the Corniche by night, and sipping  karak chai  (milky tea spiced with cardamom) whenever I got the chance.

I definitely didn’t foresee that I would be whizzing around on an underground metro, or visiting one of the region’s most prestigious modern art museums.

These are precisely the contradictions that make Qatar such a fascinating place.

With as little as  a day in Qatar , you can get a good feel for the capital city, Doha. Extend your layover by taking advantage of Qatar Airways’ visa-free offer.

If you decide to stay longer and set your gaze beyond the modern metropolis, Qatar also offers majestic desert landscapes, abandoned pearling towns and an inland sea, among other attractions, each an easy day trip away .

Use the links below to browse my Qatar travel guides, each designed to help you plan the perfect trip. Don’t forget to read up on my Essential Qatar Travel Tips before you arrive.

Qatar Travel Guide – Everything You Need to Know

qatar travel blog

Nestled on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends rich tradition with modern innovation. This tiny but prosperous nation offers travelers a unique glimpse into a land of contrasts, where the desert meets the sea and cultural treasures abound.

What’s the Best Time to Visit? 📅

The best time to visit Qatar as a tourist is during the winter months, from November to early April. This period offers the most pleasant weather and is considered the peak tourist season. Here’s why this time is ideal:

  • Mild Weather: During the winter months, the weather in Qatar is characterized by mild temperatures, making it comfortable for outdoor activities. Daytime temperatures typically range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), with cooler evenings.
  • Low Humidity: Unlike the scorching and humid summer, winter in Qatar is dry, which means you won’t have to contend with oppressive humidity.
  • Festival Season: Many of Qatar’s cultural events and festivals are held during the winter months, offering tourists a chance to engage in traditional celebrations and enjoy local arts and music.
  • Outdoor Activities: The pleasant weather is perfect for exploring Qatar’s natural beauty, such as the desert, beaches, and mangroves. Activities like dune bashing, camping, and water sports are best enjoyed during this time.
  • Doha Exploration: Winter is an excellent time to explore the capital city of Doha, its museums, cultural sites, and vibrant dining scene.

While the winter season is the most favorable for tourism, it’s also the busiest. Therefore, if you plan to visit Qatar during this period, it’s advisable to make accommodation and activity reservations in advance to ensure availability. If you prefer a quieter and less crowded experience, you can consider traveling during the shoulder seasons of late fall or early spring, when the weather is still pleasant but with fewer tourists.

What’s the Best Way to Get Around? 🚌

Getting around Qatar as a tourist is relatively straightforward, with several transportation options available. Here are the best ways to explore the country:

  • Taxis: Taxis are readily available in cities like Doha. They are a convenient and safe mode of transportation. Be sure to use official taxis, and most drivers use meters.
  • Rental Cars: Renting a car is a popular option, especially if you want the freedom to explore the country at your own pace. The road infrastructure in Qatar is well-developed, and signs are in both Arabic and English. Make sure to follow local traffic rules and avoid speeding.
  • Metro: Doha has a modern and efficient metro system that connects key areas of the city. It’s an excellent way to move around the capital and access major attractions.
  • Buses: Public buses in Doha provide affordable transportation. While the network is limited compared to the metro, buses can still be useful for getting around the city.
  • Dhow Boats: To reach locations along the coast or explore the nearby islands, consider taking a dhow boat. They offer a unique way to experience the maritime culture of Qatar.
  • Ride-Sharing Services: Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Careem operate in Qatar, providing a convenient and transparent way to book rides.
  • Limousines: Limousine services are readily available and provide a more comfortable and private mode of transportation. They are particularly useful for airport transfers.
  • Bicycles: Some areas in Doha have dedicated bike lanes and rental services, making cycling a viable option for short journeys.
  • Walking: In the city centers and along the waterfront promenades, walking is a pleasant and practical way to explore the surroundings.
  • Tourist Buses: Some tour operators offer guided city tours, allowing you to explore the main attractions with a knowledgeable guide.

When choosing your mode of transportation in Qatar, consider factors like your budget, comfort level, and the distances you plan to cover. Doha, in particular, is easy to navigate, but if you plan to explore the more remote areas of the country, such as the desert, having a rental car or booking guided tours might be the best choice. Ensure that you’re aware of local customs and road rules and follow them accordingly during your visit.

What’s the Official Language?

The official language of Qatar is Arabic. While English is widely spoken, especially in urban areas and in the business and tourism sectors, it’s always appreciated when tourists make an effort to use a few basic Arabic phrases. Here are some common Arabic words and phrases for tourists in Qatar:

  • Hello – مرحباً (Marhaban)
  • Good morning – صباح الخير (Sabah al-khair)
  • Good evening – مساء الخير (Masa’ al-khair)
  • Goodbye – وداعًا (Wada’an)
  • Please – من فضلك (Min fadlik)
  • Thank you – شكرًا (Shukran)
  • You’re welcome – على الرحب والسهم (Ala al-rahb wa al-sahlan)
  • Yes – نعم (Na’am)
  • No – لا (La)
  • Excuse me – عذرًا (Adhran)
  • I’m sorry – آسف (Asif)
  • What is your name? – ما اسمك؟ (Ma ismak?)
  • My name is… – اسمي… (Ismi…)
  • How much is this? – بكم هذا؟ (Bikam hadha?)
  • Where is…? – أين…؟ (Ayna…?)
  • Restroom/Toilet – دورة المياه (Dawrat al-miyah)
  • Water – ماء (Ma’)
  • Food – طعام (Ta’am)
  • I need help – أحتاج مساعدة (Ahtaju musa’ada)
  • Do you speak English? – هل تتحدث الإنجليزية؟ (Hal tatakallamu al-ingliziyya?)

Learning and using a few basic Arabic phrases can enhance your travel experience and show respect for the local culture. While many Qataris are proficient in English, making an effort to communicate in Arabic can be warmly received and is an excellent way to connect with the local people.

Where to Stay? 🏨

As a tourist in Qatar, you’ll find a range of accommodation options to suit various budgets and preferences. Qatar offers luxury hotels, modern apartments, and boutique accommodations, especially in the capital city of Doha. Here are some popular areas and types of accommodation where tourists can stay:

  • West Bay: The West Bay area in Doha is known for its stunning skyline, luxury hotels, and business districts. It’s a prime location for travelers seeking high-end accommodations.

  • The Pearl-Qatar: This artificial island is home to upscale residential and commercial developments, offering luxurious apartments and hotels with marina views.
  • Education City: Near the outskirts of Doha, you can find accommodations near Education City, a hub for education and culture. It’s an excellent choice if you’re visiting nearby institutions or attending events.
  • Al Rayyan: This area is home to attractions like Aspire Zone and Villagio Mall. You’ll find a mix of mid-range and luxury hotels here.
  • Airport Area: If you’re in Qatar for a short layover or have an early flight, there are several hotels near Hamad International Airport that provide convenient and comfortable stays.
  • Al Wakrah: Located south of Doha, Al Wakrah offers a quieter atmosphere, and you’ll find hotels with beach access.
  • Industrial Area: If you’re on a budget, the industrial area in Doha has budget-friendly accommodation options, but it’s farther from the main tourist attractions.
  • Dukhan: If you plan to explore the western part of Qatar, Dukhan has hotels and resorts with access to beautiful beaches.

When choosing your accommodation in Qatar, consider your budget, the type of experience you want, and the locations you plan to visit. Doha, in particular, offers a variety of hotels, from opulent luxury options to more budget-friendly choices. Keep in mind that during peak tourist seasons and major events, it’s advisable to book accommodations well in advance to secure your stay.

Qatari cuisine is a delightful blend of traditional Arabian flavors and influences from neighboring regions. As a tourist in Qatar, you should definitely try these must-try foods to savor the local culture:

  • Tea and Coffee: Enjoy the traditional Qatari coffee, known as “gahwa,” and sip on sweet tea that is often flavored with aromatic spices.
  • Fresh Seafood: Qatar’s location along the Persian Gulf makes it a great place to savor fresh seafood. Try dishes like grilled fish, shrimp, and seafood biryani.

Exploring Qatari cuisine is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the local culture and savor the distinctive flavors of the region. Whether you’re dining at a traditional restaurant or enjoying street food from a local vendor, you’ll find a rich array of dishes to try.

What to See? 🔍

Qatar is a country that beautifully balances its rich cultural heritage with modernity. As a tourist, you’ll find numerous must-see places that capture the essence of this dynamic nation. Here are some top attractions in Qatar:

  • Souq Waqif: This bustling traditional market in Doha offers a glimpse into Qatari culture and is a great place to shop for spices, textiles, and handicrafts.

Qatar Travel Guide

The Middle Eastern country of Qatar may not be a top tourist destination, but it has some interesting places to visit if you happen to be here on a transit stop or short visit.

One of these highlights is the Museum of Islamic Art , which has some incredible swords, jewelry, and other artifacts from past centuries.

Read through this complete Qatar travel guide for more info on what to expect!

Uber, Careem

Qatar has a major airport in Doha (DOH), which is one of the world's busiest and highest-rated airports. Many international flights with Qatar Airways transit in Doha airport, so if you do a lot of traveling then you'll probably pass through here at some point.

You can shop for flights to Qatar on Skyscanner.

Qatar is a very safe place to travel. It's probably the safest country in the Middle East, with a very low violent crime rate of only  0.4 per 100k inhabitants (94% lower than the global average). Terrorism is not an issue here and tourists are welcomed.

The only thing to note is that Qatari culture is conservative, so clothing in public should be modest.

The climate of Qatar is arid, so it's hot and dry year round. The coolest months are from December to February, and this is probably the best time to visit. It can get extremely hot here in the summer. Temperatures average 43 °C (110 °F) from June to August, and don't count on having any trees for shade!

Qatar is a bit harder to visit on a budget, but it can be done. Hostels are available from 55 Qatari Rials ($15 USD) and private hotels start from 160 Rials . Meals are about 55 to 75 Rials depending on location.

Transportation in Qatar is generally by car, and these can be rented, but hiring a driver is often preferable. Transportation apps like Uber and Careem are good for short distance trips.

Apply for a Qatar tourist visa

Transit visa.

Currently, to attract more tourists to Doha, Qatar has simplified the paperwork and waived fee for the online transit visa (or VOA) if you book tickets of Qatar Airways and transit in Doha.

  • Visa fee: Free
  • Applicable when you fly with Qatar Airways (the state-owned flag carrier of Qatar) and book a Multi-city flight ticket (passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure).

After successful booking of Qatar Airways, you go to the airline’s website , in the “Discover” section, go to the “Free transit visa” section.

qatar travel blog

Then click on “Apply Now” to submit your profile.

qatar travel blog

The visa application to transit in Doha is also very simple, the documents you need to prepare are:

  • Color scanned copy (or photo) of your passport information page, along with all pages with immigration stamps or visas of countries you have been to.
  • Scanned copy of one-way flight ticket to Doha and one-way flight ticket to the third country of Qatar Airways.
  • Hotel reservation confirmation in Doha (optional).

Normally, the result will be notified after about 4-5 working days from the date you submit your application, and you just need to print it out and bring it with you when entering Qatar.

qatar travel blog

A few important notes:

  • You must apply for a transit visa at the latest 7 days and at the earliest 30 days before the date of entry to Qatar.
  • The maximum duration of stay for a transit visa is 4 days (96 hours) from the time of entry.
  • Doha transit visa is valid within 30 days from the date of issue (usually counted from the date you submit your application). Therefore, you must notice your application time reasonably so that your visa is always valid during your stay in Qatar. In my opinion, you should submit your application before the date of your entry to Qatar from 20 to 15 days is better. (This note is relatively important, because I once knew of a case when a person applied for a Qatar transit visa exactly 30 days before the date of entry, and on the date of entry, the visa expired, so he could not enter Qatar).

qatar travel blog

Tourist visa

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure.
  • Have at least 5000 QAR (~ 1374 USD) in cash or in a valid international card.
  • There is a hotel reservation confirmation confirmation printed and clipped to the passport.
  • Fee: Up to now, the visa application fee to Qatar is 27.78 USD plus the service fee via VFS Global 14 USD. Total 41.78 USD.
  • You can book tickets of any airline. However, Qatar Airways is the best choice because the online Qatar visa procedures with this airline will be easier and have a higher chance of being approved.
  • Validity of stay: Short tourist visa: 30 day on a single trip, longer tourist visa: 3 months.
  • You can apply for a Qatar tourist visa up to 90 days before your departure date and at least 4 days before your flight date. Normally, your Qatar tourist visa application will be approved after 4 working days. Visa application results will be notified via email. Successfully applying for a Qatar visa online, you need to print out the electronic visa and bring it to the airport for boarding procedures.
  • The way to apply for a visa is also online. Registration link: https://qatar.vfsevisa.com/Qatar-Online/QROnline/VisaCategoryAndPricingDetails/DisplayVisaCategoryAndPricingDetails/#no-back! (After applying for a visa).

Please note that, after completing the application and paying the fee, you will not be refunded whether you have qualified or not. Therefore, please carefully check the application file and review each step to not lose your visa unfortunately.

3 days in Doha — Day 3: Exploring new culture

Each destination contains a new culture, to learn the fastest a culture of a country, you should go to the local market. This place is considered as a miniature museum, the closest way to touch the culture, people, specialties and cuisine of a country.

qatar travel blog

Souq Waqif is known as the central and first traditional market of Doha. After more than 100 years, Doha has transformed into a modern metropolis with countless impressive skyscrapers. But with the same flow of time, Souq Waqif was still there, keeping its original appearance and vibrant atmosphere. Just like what people imagine about a Persian souq (market) often seen in the fairy tale “One Thousand and One Nights” with many interesting and unusual things.

Souq Waqif in the local language means “standing market”, is the first and oldest market in Doha. Over hundreds of years, this Persian market still retains the ancient look and atmosphere of a bygone era. Not only a place to exchange and trade, the bustling market in Qatar is also a place for national cultural interference and clearly shows the cultural identity of Muslims.

qatar travel blog

Located in the middle of the ancient commercial center of Doha, right at the entrance to Souq Waqif was a roundabout, above which was a huge wooden boat. Legend has it that the Qarmatians (Islamic people of East Arab descent) spent many days at sea in wooden boats called dhows before drifting onto the shores of the Qatar peninsula. Since then, the wooden boat has become a symbol of the origin of the Qatari nation.

qatar travel blog

Standing beside Souq Waqif were the white walls of the ancient fortress  AI Koot. This ancient fortress was built in 1927 to protect the market from cunning thieves. Today, AI Koot with its round and square towers has become a unique feature in the architecture of the whole market Souq Waqif.

Behind the main market is the Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center (Fanar) with the roof of the mosque winding in a unique spiral. This is also one of the architectural features that create the ancient beauty of Souq Waqif. And next to is Souq Waqif Art Center.

qatar travel blog

Just like other Arab markets, Souq Waqif market is like a giant labyrinth with hundreds of small streets intersecting each other without any rules. The stalls and shops are placed side by side with a wide range of typical products. The stalls are pungent with spices. Aromatherapy shops are overflowing with agarwood (or oud) incense that Qatar people burn at home or office to show hospitality. The display areas of hand-woven rugs are colorful and delicately patterned. Magical lamps, ivory chess pieces, elegant boats, centuries-old guns and swords… All of them have a Middle Eastern style, mysterious, luxurious and irresistible charm.

qatar travel blog

Besides shopping, the market is also a place for visitors to rest and enjoy traditional Arabic dishes. Evenings here are often very crowded, the Muslim traditional black costumes covered from head to toe still cannot hide the beauty of the mysterious Middle Eastern women. Muslim women must be accompanied by men when leaving the house, so couples slowly walking together in white and black clothes is a familiar image that visitors can see anywhere in the market.

The special thing about this Souq Waqif market is that it is open 24 hours, visitors can come here at any time of the day. However, visiting the market in the evening is still considered the best when the lights throughout the market light up to create a shimmering, mysterious space. The night lights bring a sense of escapism to the dense space of shisha. The fragrant smoke from shisha makes the dishes more attractive and delicious than ever, making the masculine beauty of the men’s faces and the mystery of the women’s faces more gentle and affectionate.

Falcon Souq

In the “standing market”, visitors also cannot miss the Falcon Souq, where there are many trained falcons. This is a feature of culture, history and also a sport of the Qatari people.

An interesting point in the Middle East is that the falconry is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of the Middle East and humanity. The falcon represents courage, perseverance, and spirit and freedom. Falcons are also a basic symbol of their owner’s status.

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is located at the tip of the 7km Corniche Walk in the Qatari capital, Doha. The museum displays Islamic art from three continents dating back over 1400 years. MIA is the leading museum in the system of museums in Qatar. qatar travel blog

The Museum of Islamic Art is a magnificent white five-story building with galleries, a library and an educational center, built on a man-made island on the outskirts of Doha. The museum displays more than 800 works of art and history from three continents, highlighting Islamic culture from the 7th to the 19th centuries.

Who designed this famous work is the legendary architect I. M. Pei (the famous architect who designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum). Inside the museum are artifacts of Islamic art such as metalwork, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, fabrics and glass from the 7th-19th centuries. Most of the works inside the museum come from Spain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, India and Central Asia.

The museum is a pearl of world architectural art, with the main milky white tones. A majestic cubism of square, octagonal cubes stacked in an unusual way, with the top tier recreating the traditional niqab costume revealing only haunting eyes of Muslim women. A chorus of light and shadow, aided by the blazing desert sun and the delicate illumination in the night.

In addition to an exhibition space of approximately 5000 m2, the museum also spends up to 45,000 m2 for the exhibition area, conservation area, library, education center… with about 1600 staff serving visitors and organizing related cultural activities. Completed construction in 2006, but after two years of focusing on interior design, the museum can welcome visitors in 2008.

6 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING DOHA, QATAR

Doha’s tourism has increased over the years ; it’s also home to countless expats from all over the world and considered a very modern city – it also is, however, the capital city of an Islamic country , with different customs and traditions to that of most western countries. For this reason, there are some things you should know before visiting .

#1: Drinking Alcohol

You can buy and drink alcohol in Doha , as long as you’re at a licensed restaurant, bar, or hotel, or are carrying a bottle from the supermarket to your accommodation. However, you are not allowed to drink alcohol (or even less, be intoxicated) in public : it’s considered a crime and will be punished as such .

#2: Dress Code

Being an Islamic country, there are some things to consider when it comes to clothing . There is no dress code as such for tourists in Qatar, but it’s advised to dress conservatively out of respect for the culture . You may also be prevented from entering certain landmarks if your clothes are considered inappropriate.

For starters, knees and shoulders should always be covered when in public . This means no tank tops or shorts for either men or women. Women should also avoid translucid and skimpy clothes, and they may have to cover their heads for entering mosques.

#3: Public Displays of Affection

Public displays of affection should be avoided in Doha , or you could get into trouble! Even if you’re traveling with your partner or husband/wife, kissing in public is a grave offense , and while you could get away with holding hands in Doha, that very innocent act is frowned upon in certain places of Qatar.

Therefore, it’s better to restrain from any displays of affection while you’re in public to be on the safe side and avoid a nasty situation.

#4: Summer Heat

The high season for tourism is actually in the winter , from December to February . While you’ll find much better prices and deals during Qatar’s low season, the summer temperatures in the city can be hot . From June to August, the average temperature varies between 95 and 113F (35 – 45° Celsius) during the day.

#5: Taking Photographs

Photographing local people, as well as some religious and military buildings is prohibited, and can be punished with arrest . You should be fine in most touristic places, but if any scene seems sensitive or you’re in doubt, it’s better not to photograph it or to ask for permission.

This also extends to posting material that insults or appears insensitive to the culture of the country!

#6: What You Shouldn’t Bring

All luggage is scanned at Doha’s airport , and while it’s unlikely you’d be taking any of these prohibited items with you (hopefully!) it’s worth mentioning them. It is illegal to import drugs and alcohol into Qatar , as well as any pork product and religious material and books – of any religion.

HOW TO MOVE AROUND DOHA, QATAR

▶️ To get from Doha Qatar airport to the city center, you can book a private transfer in advance . Your driver will be waiting for you upon arrival, and take you directly to your hotel in a hassle free manner, so you don’t have to queue for a taxi or carry your bags around. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

▶️ To move around the city of Doha , one of the best means of transport is the metro . It operates daily from 6 AM to 11 PM and connects most areas of the city. There are three lines: The Red , the Green , and the Gold lines, although you’ll probably use the Red Line the most to access Doha’s main landmarks.

▶️ A more comfortable alternative, however, especially if you want to arrive at the attractions’ entrances and avoid walking from the station, is taking a taxi . It’s very safe to get one directly on the street, but you can also use the Careem app to call them .

▶️ Uber works very good in Doha as well , or else you could rent a car , which will be very practical if you plan on taking day trips from the city.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN DOHA

Stroll down the corniche.

Image of the corniche in Doha, Qatar - a must when visiting Doha.

Doha Corniche is a 4.3-mile (7 km) promenade along the bay , offering beautiful views of the water on one side, and plenty of attractions, shops, and cafés on the other.

It’s a great spot to go for a stroll, either during the day or at night (I’d say try both!), and you’ll also get to check out the Pearl Monument and the viewpoint facing the bay. Arguably the best Doha sightseeing can be enjoyed at the Corniche, so don’t miss it!

Get Lost in Souq Waqif

qatar travel blog

Souq Waqif is one of the most iconic places to visit in Doha . Formerly a traditional market where livestock and spices were exchanged, nowadays it boasts a great number of stalls and shops selling everything from souvenirs to homeware , food, and textiles.

This very bustling souk also grants you the opportunity of meeting falcons from up close , as well as to interact with the Arab horses and camels at the stables, learn about Qatari art, and sampe some local delicacies.

Go on a Desert Safari

qatar travel blog

South of Doha is Qatar’s largest desert , where you can enjoy activities such as dune bashing, camel riding, shisha smoking at a desert camp, and sandboarding. Going on a desert safari from Doha , therefore, is pretty much a must when in the city!

Depending on the tour you choose you’ll also get to visit the Inland Sea, right on the border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which provides a magnificent natural spectacle.

➤ The Private Half-Day Desert Safari takes you to the vast dunes of the Qatari desert, where you’ll get to ride a camel, go dune bashing and sandboarding, and enjoy a photo stop at the magnificent Inland Sea. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Visit the Doha Museums

qatar travel blog

Qatar is a country with a very rich and interesting history , spanning from the early days when its main source of income came from pearl diving to the oil boom and the fast development of the futuristic cities you see today. Spending some time in the astounding Doha museums is very recommended to understand the city and country better.

The National Museum of Qatar is impressive from the very moment you set eyes on it, as the building is inspired in, and resembles, a desert rose. Here you’ll get to immerse in Qatar’s heritage and culture, gaining insights into its past and enjoying the exhibitions on display.

You also shouldn’t miss the Museum of Islamic Art , which showcases more than a thousand years of Islamic art from a wide variety of countries.

Go Shopping at The Pearl

qatar travel blog

The Pearl-Qatar is a high-end destination and residential area built on a man-made island . It’s considered a shopping paradise for the number of luxurious brands you’ll be able to buy, that go from Armani to Stella McCartney and Hermes , and it’s mainly visited for this purpose.

The Pearl also features waterfront cafés and eateries and charming neighborhoods to explore. The highlight for insta-pictures? The Venetian Bridge !

👉 These are the most famous attractions, but this is certainly not a comprehensive guide to all you can do in Doha. Check out my post about the best things to do in Doha for more ideas and inspiration!

BEST DAY TRIPS FROM DOHA

Doha might be the main destination when it comes to Qatar tourism, but there’s so much more to see beyond the city! That’s why one of the best activities in Doha is actually going on a day trip and discovering some of the best places to visit in Qatar .

Find the ultimate day trips from Doha below.

Explore Al Khor Island

Al Khor Island is a very lush location , featuring mangroves where you can kayak, hiking trails, fishing spots, and a wide variety of wildlife that made it a particularly famous attraction among birdwatching fans.

It’s an ideal day trip destination for nature lovers, especially for those looking to escape the city’s hustle and bustle for a while.

➤ The Private North of Qatar Tour includes a visit to the beautiful island, as well as to some other iconic landmarks of the region. The historic Al Zubara Fort and the Al Thakhira Beach are among the places you’ll get to explore with your knowledgeable guide. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Visit West Qatar

qatar travel blog

The west of Qatar is a vast and relatively arid place with the most magnificent natural sculptures, caves, and attractions. The Ras Abrouq Rock Formations , which are mushroom-shaped rocks eroded by the wind and the sand over millions of years, are a must-visit in the area! Here you’ll also get to see the very interesting 18th-century Zekreet Fort .

Other picturesque attractions in West Qatar are Film City , a movie set built as a traditional Qatari village, and the West/East , East/West sculptures in the desert.

➤ The Qatar West Coast Tour is a half-day trip to the area’s most popular attractions, including Richard Serra’s sculpture, the astounding mushroom-shaped rock formations, Zekreet Fort, and Film City, with a brief stop at the Al Shahniya Race Track to see the camels train. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

See a Camel Race

qatar travel blog

Camel racing is Qatar’s most popular sport , but you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s not human jockeys riding the camels, but robots!

The races take place in Al Shahniya Race Track every week during the high season, and it’s a very lively and atmospheric event you shouldn’t miss. Attending a race is indeed one of the best things to do in Qatar .

➤ The Half-Day Camel Race Tour takes you behind the scenes, so you can meet the camels before the race. You’ll then enjoy it the way locals do: driving along the road parallel to the race track until the finish line! ➥ BOOK IT HERE

WHERE TO EAT IN DOHA

Qatar has many culinary delights to offer, and you’ll find it very easy to sample the traditional dishes while in Doha .

Some of the most iconic items of Qatari cuisine include balaleet , which features a combination of sweet and savory flavors, the heavily-spiced thareed , luqaimat for dessert, and Qatar’s national dish, machboos .

Shay Al Shoomos

For traditional Qatari food, look no further than Shay Al Shoomos . IS DOHA SAFE?

Doha is a very safe city . In fact, it was ranked the world’s second safest city in 2020 and has a very low crime rate.

It’s also considered a safe destination for women , even if they’re traveling solo, and while common sense and precaution are advised (as in any place in the world!), you should have no issue at all traveling through Qatar, especially in its capital city.

VISIT DOHA, QATAR: FAQ

Doha is a very picturesque city, and the perfect place to visit to immerse yourself in Qatar’s culture and heritage. Featuring sandy beaches, astounding views of the bay, and plenty of attractions, you should definitely spend some time in Doha while in the country!

You should restrain from public displays of affection, and also avoid drinking in public, which is considered a crime in Qatar. Dressing conservatively is also highly recommended to avoid any trouble.

3 to 4 days in Doha should be enough to explore the main sights, relax at the beach, and even go on a day trip.

Yes! English is widely spoken in Doha due to the number of tourists and expats living there.

This isn't all strictly true, and will put people off of going to Qatar. I have lived here for a number of years and the "no shorts or shoulders in public" is totally false.

I'd advise that you maybe check things fully before you publish.

Sunday 11th of September 2022

I am personally a resident of Dubai, where things are way less strict that Qatar, and I still always try to cover shoulders and knees out of respect for the local culture. Does it mean no one wears shorts and tank tops? Plenty of people do.... but most expats that live in the country try and be respectful and reserve smaller clothing for days at the beach and so. So I respect your opinion, but I will not promote being disrespectful to the local culture on my own blog.

My solo trip to Qatar

My solo trip to Qatar

I recently took a trip to Doha, the capital city of Qatar! It was an absolutely incredible experience. Located on the Persian Gulf, Doha is a modern, cosmopolitan city with a rich blend of traditional culture and cutting-edge architecture. The city is modern and vibrant, with towering skyscrapers, luxurious hotels, and endless shopping and dining options.

My solo trip to Qatar

This blog post is about my experiences and reflections as a solo female traveler in Qatar. From the bustling capital of Doha to the stunning deserts and beautiful beaches, I discovered a lot about myself and the country along the way. I felt a sense of adventure and freedom as I journeyed through the deserts and the modern city of this beautiful country.

This travel story is a reminder of the joy that comes from exploring the world.

The experience of a lifetime: my solo trip to Qatar

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the iconic Museum of Islamic Art . The museum, which is located on the waterfront, features a stunning collection of Islamic art and artifacts from around the world. I was particularly impressed by the beautiful textiles, ceramics, and metalwork on display.

I also had the chance to explore the Souq Waqif , a traditional bustling market in the heart of the city. The souq is filled with narrow streets and alleyways, and it was a pleasure to wander through and browse the various stalls selling everything from spices and textiles to jewellery and souvenirs.

Of course, no trip to Doha would be complete without a visit to the Qatar National Library . The library, which opened in 2018, is a truly impressive building, with a sleek and modern design. Inside, there are countless books, manuscripts, and other materials to discover, as well as a variety of exhibitions and events.

In addition to its cultural offerings, Doha also has a number of beautiful beaches and parks , as well as world-class shopping and dining. I spent a day at the Katara Cultural Village , which hosts a variety of events and exhibitions, and also visited the Aspire Park , a beautiful green space with walking trails and a lake.

Overall, my solo trip to Qatar was an unforgettable experience. From the rich culture and history to the modern amenities and beautiful natural surroundings, there was never a dull moment.

Taking this trip to Qatar was one of the best decisions I ever made. Going alone made me feel empowered, independent, and courageous. I learned so much about myself, the culture, and the people in Qatar. It was an incredible journey that I will never forget.

Where to stay in Doha? Musheireb or West Bay Beach?

When deciding between Musheireb and West Bay Beach for your stay in Doha, Musheireb emerges as a compelling choice for its unique blend of cultural richness and modern amenities.

After experiencing both locations, I’d pick Musheireb for my next visit. It’s right in the center and a part of the Msheireb Downtown Doha project, bringing together traditional Qatari charm and modern comforts. Musheireb offers a mix of iconic landmarks, cultural events, and diverse dining choices, providing a well-rounded and authentic experience in the heart of the city.

What to be careful of in Qatar?

While Qatar is generally safe, it’s essential to be mindful of local customs and traditions. Respect the conservative dress code, especially in more traditional areas. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, so it’s wise to keep expressions of romance private. Additionally, avoid sensitive topics in conversation, such as politics and religion, to ensure a smooth and respectful interaction with locals.

Why I loved Qatar so much

Qatar is a country that I had always wanted to visit. After finally getting the chance to travel there, I can confidently say that it exceeded all of my expectations.

The Chedi Katara Hotel Photography

The architecture in Doha

One of the things that I loved most about Qatar was its stunning architecture. The country is home to a number of impressive modern buildings, including the Qatar National Library  and the Museum of Islamic Art. These structures not only showcase the country’s modernity but also give a glimpse of their rich culture and history.

The Chedi Katara Hotel Photography

Safety in Doha

Unlike my usual caution when walking alone at night in foreign countries, Qatar was a pleasant exception. During my solo trip to Qatar, I felt entirely secure, experiencing a sense of safety that allowed me to stroll around without any feeling of threat.

The Chedi Katara Hotel Photography

Hospitality in Qatar

I was genuinely touched by the hospitality I experienced during my solo trip in Qatar. Even though I traveled alone, I never felt truly alone. The people I met were not only willing but eager to spend time with me, showing me around and making my stay special. In a world where “I am busy” is a common refrain, the warmth and friendliness of the people in Qatar stood out.

A guide to Doha

The locals went out of their way to make me feel at home, always ensuring I was comfortable and had everything I needed. A memorable example of their kindness occurred when I was about to board a bus with a metro ticket, assuming it was valid. When I discovered it wasn’t, the bus driver still let me in, exemplifying genuine hospitality and humanity. It’s a reminder that not all tourists are familiar with the intricacies of a new country, and those who work with them should show understanding and compassion.

My solo trip to Qatar

SPACE There was ample space for everyone, everywhere I went in Qatar! I never encountered crowded locations and never had to make advance reservations. Whether it was charming cafes or stunning restaurants, there was always a free table waiting for me. No need to worry about making reservations ahead of time or waiting in lines to get in.

THE WEATHER IN JANUARY It was always around 20 degrees and I was the happiest girl in the world…

A guide to Doha

EVERYTHING FELT EXTREMELY EASY… Everything was incredibly effortless in Qatar. Entry into the country, getting a SIM card, navigating the streets, locating places, and moving from one spot to another – it was all remarkably easy. Uber, with its affordable rates, added to the convenience, making transportation a breeze.

THE METRO Try to find a metro system anywhere in the world that is safer, cleaner, and more beautiful than the one in Doha. You won’t.

My solo trip to Qatar – The verdict

In conclusion, Qatar is a country that truly has it all – from stunning architecture to rich culture and warm hospitality. It’s a place that I will always treasure and would recommend to anyone looking for a unique and memorable travel experience.

Travel Blog: Doha (Qatar, Revisited)

Home / Food

A lot has happened since my first trip to Doha . Both personally and… Qatar-ily . In the three years that followed the country has pushed full steam ahead to build all things World Cup 2022, fallen into an unexpected diplomatic crisis (severing ties with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain), and developed faster than any country I’ve visited in my lifetime.

The skyline is no longer a skyline. What was once a handful of aspirant skyscrapers has become a pop-up book of investment, expansion and pride.

One which now harbours much more than you’d expect from the eminent stopover destination…

(All outfit details at the end of the post!)

Where to Stay in Doha

The mondrian doha.

My favourite new arrival to Doha is this Wonderland of a hotel. In fact, it doesn’t seem quite right to call it a hotel. Though the rooms have everything you could need (or want) and the service was impeccable, the Mondrian Doha is far more than a place to rest your head.

All 24 floors are design-led (with custom designed furniture & fixtures by Marcel Wanders) and offered unique explorations of their own:

After checking in, we headed straight to Walima for dinner. The restaurant prides itself on modern Qatari hospitality, and that is exactly what we received. That and a diverse menu of local and Middle Eastern dishes that could cater to purists or experimental diners alike.

The restaurant even has a beautiful sunken majilis for large family meals, an outside terrace whee you can enjoy Shishas in traditional Arabic tents, and private glass boxes for a more intimate meal.

The hotel is a true foodie haven; there is a highly-acclaimed Morimoto (with incredible artwork by Hiroshi Senju), a New York-style burger hotspot (Hudson Tavern), a Magnolia Bakery, and even CUT by Wolfgang Puck – signature steakhouse at night and breakfast boutique in the morning.

In fact, the sky is the literal limit for the Mondrian. On the 27th floor, ‘Rise’ bar overlooks their fantastical swimming pool and lounge area on one side and the Pearl, West Bay, and Lusail City on the other. It is all Skybar LA and I could have spent the entire trip luxuriating under its hand-painted glass dome roof.

Last but not least, the spa. The branded ‘ESPA’ is nothing less than a a secret garden. Behind an unmarked door, its thoughtful and unique design elements – consistent with the rest of the hotel – lead you through the shimmering mosaic walls of relaxation areas, treatment rooms, crystal rain showers, a Finnish sauna, and even a traditional Turkish Hammam (which I fully endorse).

The male and female spas are separated, as you might expect, but photos suggest men have a consistent – albeit less stereotypically ‘feminine’ – environment to enjoy.

What To Do and Eat in Doha

View this post on Instagram   Kayaked to a secret island chock full of flamingoes and never coming home okay byeeeeee. ??? A post shared by Lela London (@lelalondon) on Nov 16, 2018 at 3:55am PST

I haven’t gone kayaking since my last trip turned into a rescue mission so was beyond excited to learn Qatar had a little kayaking excursion of their own on offer.

In Al Thakira Bay, a lovely little team take locals and tourists out for a paddle around their lovely (and very beginner-friendly) waters. There is even an island in the middle of the bay where you can indulge in a little swimming and – if you’re lucky – some flamingo watching!

There are some offroad-worthy desert paths to tackle on your way in, but they’re a great adrenaline push for pre-paddle nerves. The trip lasts roughly two hours and was a great chance to talk to locals, to boot.

Katara Cultural Village

Katara is a beautiful amalgamation of culture that I hadn’t had the pleasure of visiting during my last trip. As its full name would suggest, it is very much a village; photography-worthy architecture around every corner, restaurants, families, coffee shops, galleries, ampitheatres (one of which was hosting free international music performances), a swimming beach and more.

Though I only had an hour or so to explore Katara’s well-manicured ground, I was really taken by hoards of laughing families on the promenade and a slew of buggies and golf carts that spun through the streets, eager to find something new to explore.

Baladna Farms

Qatar’s Saudi blockade has alienated the country from some of its most necessary trade partners, meaning resources – even those as simple as milk – are near impossible to import sustainably. As such, Baladna have put themselves at the forefront of making Qatar self-sufficient.

The farms are available to tour, but the farm cafe is a great destination for those who are time-poor and hungry. The food is delicious, local, and the fresh Ayran (a salted milk with yogurt texture) is a must-try, for the pure Marmite feels of it.

Museum of Islamic Art

Though I spoke of the museum in my last visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find there were more exhibitions available for my second visit. The world-class collection spans 1,400 years of Islamic culture and offers hours of free entertainment and education.

If you’re visiting before April 30th of 2019, be sure to check out ‘Syria Matters’.

Parisa at Sharq Village

Sharq Village I returned to Sharq Village (aka the pinnacle of Qatari opulance) for a meal at Parisa this trip and it didn’t disappoint. I When In Rome -d the menu to the max, sharing almost every sharing plate available alongside a charcoal table grill of outstanding mixed meat.

The ambiance, as expected, was wonderful (especially on the terrace, which offers sea views of Doha Bay) and I particularly enjoyed the World Cup stadium models they’re hosting in the lobby as I rolled myself into a taxi.

The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island spanning nearly four gorgeous square kilometres. Whether intentional or not, the area looks something like a pastel-painted Venice and is extraordinarily empty in the daytime – making it something of a hidden gem.

Like many of Doha’s favoured destinations, locals assured me that it came to life in the evening but I really enjoyed its bizarre tranquility. The upmarket restaurants, promenades and shops felt magical in their vacancy.

Bottomless brunch at Opal by Gordon Ramsay at The St Regis

Opal by Gordon Ramsay at The St Regis This was my indisputable foodie highlight of the trip. Opal’s bottomless brunch is served on their beautiful garden terrace and includes a seemingly endless stream of starters, sushi, mains and desserts. Highlights include the spicy tuna hasso maki, a peach & endive salad, tiny eggs benedict, and a Comte-filled wagyu slider.

Everything was truly unique and the atmosphere was as relaxed and social as such luxury can afford. I enjoyed my time so much I even sauntered up for a pit stop at the hotel’s rooftop weekend brunch party (the most Dubai thing I’ve seen in Doha, for sure).

Though I held a soft spot for the souq after my last visit, nothing prepared me for its energy in the night time. The eponymous ‘standing market’ is electric after the sun sets.

The vibrant market streets of spices, oils handicrafts, clothes, pearls and pets take on a life of their own. Restaurants fill in the blink of an eye. Shopkeepers leave their goods in the hands of neighbouring retailers as they catch up with friends. Locals welcome expats in to play games of chess in tiny clubs. Women sell their expertly-made goods with the vigour and importance of their male counterparts (the souq has made a push to offer women free retail space).

The souq was life . I didn’t want to leave and I can’t wait to return.

How To Get To Doha

Qatar airways business class.

Like last time, I to and fro-ed in the luxury of Qatar Airways’ business class.

My favourite airline (and trust me, I actively look for others) once again topped me up on champagne more attentively than an axious first date would. Offered a comfy in-flight lounge to chat with new friends in. Took me on two world-class culinary journeys. Forced me to select between hundreds of movies I had been looking for an excuse to watch.

Business class with Qatar Airways is truly like a holiday of its own.

On the way back, I even had the chance to indulge in the ‘Qsuite’ – the airline’s new standard for Business. Instead of turning into a fully-flat bed, Qsuite seats can connect to the neighbouring seat to build a double bed and move partitions to create a four-person office and desk space.

I, naturally, opted for the former and binged on some old-school episodes of Friends in bed with my two travel buddies. Afternoon tea, bubbles, and all.

What To Wear in Doha

I’m a woman with a troubling penchant for minidresses. Being culturally sensitive, I knew I needed to approach things more conservatively than I would in similarly hot climates so pulled together a few long dresses and realised I didn’t have anything properly exciting to wear.

Thus, I went on a bit of a Seafolly spree at Simply Beach. Using this beautiful mid-summer dress (seen above) as a gateway garment, I added their packable wide-brim hat and Moonflower bikini for the poolside (which ended up being a super-splashy godsend during some vigorous kayaking!).

Qatar Travel Guide - Things to know before travelling to Qatar

Qatar Travel Guide – Things to know before travelling to Qatar

Qatar is one of the richest countries in Western Asia and is well-known to be a tourist hotspot. The Gulf nation is also very welcoming to its tourists. However, every country in the world is different, has varied practices, a different way of life and more. This is why, if you are planning your next trip to Qatar, then here’s a travel guide for a smoother trip.

List of things that you must know before you leave for Qatar

Here are some of the things that will help you when you go to Qatar:

Qatar’s official language is Arabic, but English is widely spoken

As soon as you arrive in the small Gulf country, you will see all the signage is in Arabic, which can end up confusing travellers from India. Arabic is the official language of the country, which means everything will be in that language. However, you should not fret because there is a huge population in Qatar that speaks English. In addition, everyone associated with the travel industry speaks English, so you will not have much difficulty in getting by.

The official currency is Qatari Riyal

The official currency is the Qatari Riyal and is pegged to the US Dollar. As a result, it is very easy to get Qatari Riyal in exchange for dollars. 1 Qatari Riyal equals ₹23 approximately and $0.27. You will find plenty of foreign currency exchanges all over the country. You should also carry currencies that are more common, such as dollars and euros, instead of the Indian Rupee.

Tourists are expected to dress appropriately

If you wear shorts or tank tops on the streets of Qatar, you will not be stopped. Neither will someone ask the women with you to wear hijabs in order to cover their hair. However, it is expected that tourists use their common sense and do not wear outfits that might make the locals feel uncomfortable. Ideal clothes to wear in Qatar should not be overly tight, or too revealing.

Qatar experiences extreme climates

Because of the country’s location, extremes of climate are commonplace in Qatar. Therefore, you should plan your visit wisely, considering the weather conditions. Qatar experiences a desert climate, so hot and dry is how you can expect the days to be. However, it is not sweltering all year round. The cool season is between the months of December and February, with the average temperature between 14-25 degrees Celsius. Thus, this is by far the best time for you to visit Qatar.

There are specific places to consume alcohol in Qatar

Muslim countries are usually very strict on drinking alcohol, but Qatar is unlike them. However, there are specific locations, and you are permitted to drink only there, nowhere else. Drinking is ideally allowed in restaurants and bars, but it will be very expensive. Moreover, you are not allowed to enter Qatar with alcohol in your luggage. It is also considered a crime if you cause an inconvenience while being drunk in public.

Purchase an international roaming SIM card before you go

When you buy an international roaming SIM card , you can start using your mobile data and calling features right away. You won’t have to get local SIMs, that are notorious for their high prices, unclear plan benefits and extra inconvenience. An Airtel international roaming SIM card can be purchased from the Airtel Thanks app itself. You can also keep track of your data usage, know what your plan benefits are, and you get to keep the very same phone number.

What are some important tips for travelling to Qatar?

Here are some important travelling tips that will ensure that your trip to Qatar is even better:

  • Tourists are expected to tip. It is not a hard and fast rule, but as a tourist, people will expect you to tip up to 10-15% of the total bill.
  • Doha shuts down on Friday mornings for prayers. Local cafes and restaurants will not be open until 1 or 2 pm.
  • Doha is extremely safe for solo female travellers, but many establishments are ‘men only’
  • Couples must follow particular rules and social customs in Qatar
  • There is a huge population of Indians, Bangladeshis and Nepalese in Qatar, and expats make up 87% of the local population.
  • Qatar drinks tea, quite heavily.
  • Do not drink tap water in Doha.
  • Crossing a street may take up to 10 minutes. The pavements are also deserted during the daytime.

We hope this Qatar travel guide helped you to plan a better trip to the Gulf nation.

Decoding Qatar's Seasons: Ultimate Guide

Best Time to Visit Qatar

Nestled on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar is a mesmerising blend of modernity and tradition, offering visitors a unique cultural experience amidst its desert landscapes and bustling cities. From the shimmering skyline of Doha to the serene sands of the desert, Qatar entices travellers with its rich heritage, warm hospitality, and diverse attractions. However, choosing the ideal time to visit this captivating destination can significantly enhance your experience. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the nuances of Qatar's climate, events, and activities to help you pinpoint the best time for your visit while considering aspects like travel insurance and international travel insurance.

Understanding Qatar's Climate

Qatar experiences a desert climate characterised by scorching summers, mild winters, and minimal rainfall. The weather is influenced by its proximity to the Arabian Gulf, with high humidity levels during the summer months. Understanding the seasonal variations is crucial for planning a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Qatar.

1. Summer (June to August):

Summer in Qatar is synonymous with extreme heat and soaring temperatures, often exceeding 40°C (104°F). The scorching sun combined with high humidity levels can make outdoor activities unbearable for many visitors. Hence, summer is generally not recommended for tourism, except for those seeking indoor attractions or specific events like the Qatar Summer Festival. However, if you do find yourself in Qatar during the summer months, it's advisable to stay hydrated, seek shade, and plan indoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Additionally, ensuring you have adequate travel insurance, including individual travel insurance , is essential to mitigate any unexpected health issues or travel disruptions.

2. Autumn (September to November):

Autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, offering relief from the sweltering heat. Temperatures gradually begin to drop, making it more comfortable to explore outdoor attractions. This season is ideal for cultural explorations, desert safaris, and outdoor adventures before the onset of winter crowds. Visitors can enjoy pleasant weather conditions and fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience. It's also a prudent time to consider purchasing international travel insurance to safeguard your trip against unforeseen events such as flight cancellations or medical emergencies.

3. Winter (December to February):

Winter is undoubtedly the most popular time to visit Qatar, attracting a plethora of tourists seeking respite from the harsh winters elsewhere. The weather during this season is pleasantly warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) and cooler evenings. It's perfect for exploring outdoor attractions, enjoying water sports, and attending various events and festivals, including the much-celebrated Qatar National Day on December 18th. Additionally, winter is an excellent time for camel racing, a traditional sport deeply ingrained in Qatari culture. Prioritising international travel insurance coverage during this peak tourist season ensures peace of mind and financial protection throughout your journey.

4. Spring (March to May):

Spring heralds the onset of warmer weather in Qatar, making it an excellent time to visit for those who prefer milder temperatures. The landscape blooms with vibrant flowers, creating picturesque scenery across the country. Spring is ideal for outdoor activities like beach outings, dune bashing, and exploring cultural sites before the scorching summer heat sets in. Visitors can also participate in outdoor events such as the Katara International Kite Festival, where colourful kites fill the sky in a dazzling display of creativity and skill. Considering individual travel insurance coverage during this season provides added security and flexibility for your travel plans.

Key Events and Festivals

Qatar boasts a vibrant calendar of events and festivals throughout the year, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich cultural tapestry. Here are some notable events to consider when planning your trip:

1. Qatar National Day (December 18th)

Celebrated with great fervour and patriotism, Qatar National Day commemorates the country's unification and independence. The festivities include parades, fireworks, traditional performances, and cultural exhibitions, providing an immersive experience for visitors. It's a fantastic opportunity to witness the pride and spirit of the Qatari people and immerse yourself in the country's heritage.

2. Doha International Book Fair (Usually held in January or February)

Book enthusiasts and literary aficionados flock to the Doha International Book Fair, where they can explore a vast collection of books, attend author signings, and participate in literary discussions. The event showcases Qatar's commitment to promoting education, literature, and cultural exchange. Whether you're a book lover or simply curious about Qatari literature and culture, this fair offers something for everyone.

3. Qatar International Food Festival (Usually held in March)

Culinary enthusiasts rejoice during the Qatar International Food Festival, a gastronomic extravaganza featuring a diverse array of cuisines, cooking demonstrations, food tastings, and celebrity chef appearances. It's a feast for the senses and a must-visit for food lovers. From traditional Qatari dishes to international delicacies, this festival celebrates Qatar's culinary diversity and vibrant food scene.

4. Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition (Usually held in September)

For those interested in traditional Qatari pursuits, the Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the art of falconry, hunting, and desert traditions. Visitors can witness awe-inspiring falconry displays, browse hunting equipment, and learn about Qatar's rich falconry heritage. It's a unique opportunity to experience the ancient traditions that have shaped Qatari culture for centuries.

Choosing the best time to visit Qatar depends on your preferences, whether you seek outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or culinary delights. While winter remains the peak tourist season, each season offers its unique charm and opportunities for exploration. By understanding Qatar's climate, events, and activities, you can plan a memorable and enriching journey to this captivating destination, ensuring an unforgettable experience for years to come. Whether you're exploring the bustling streets of Doha, traversing the golden sands of the desert, or indulging in the rich flavours of Qatari cuisine, Qatar promises a truly immersive and unforgettable travel experience. Don't forget to prioritise travel insurance, including international travel insurance and individual travel insurance, to safeguard your trip and travel investment against unforeseen circumstances.
