RED Releases First Studio Album In Three Years, ‘RATED R’ + New Music Video

GRAMMY® nominated, RIAA Certified Gold®-selling alternative metal band RED releases RATED R today at digital and streaming outlets globally from RED ENTERTAINMENT / The Fuel Music. The band’s evocative artistry takes center stage on its eighth studio album produced by RED guitarist Anthony Armstrong.

Combining the band’s signature symphonic elements, piano-driven atmospheres and heavy yet melodic guitarwork with deep-seated and robustly delivered messages, RED’s RATED R is a thought-provoking project. The recording tackles several resonant and relevant topics amidst centering on the ideological and interpersonal divisions, confrontations and suffering of modern society.

Building upon the story RED has been revealing since its second LP (2009’s Innocence & Instinct), fans will appreciate how the band is connecting its filmic past with today’s release of the video for its SiriusXM Octane featured RATED R lead single “ Surrogates .” Premiered by HardDrive Radio, filmed on location in Utah with an 1888 Old West theme and helmed by the band’s drummer Brian Medeiros , the video is the prequel to the entire series that has driven over 170M+ views on YouTube alone.

In addition to this performance video, a “ The Redeemers ” short film will be released featuring RED as suspected outlaws whose sole purpose is to unmask an evil taking over the small town of Condor, Utah. The filming was completed in Utah over a four day shoot and features more than 50 extras as well as horses, guns, bar fights and everything you would expect from an old Western. The film is meant to be another chapter in the ongoing series RED fans have come to love.

Along with the videos and “Surrogates” single, recently released tracks “ Cold World ” (written by Anthony and Breaking Benjamin’s Keith Wallen) and “ Minus It All ,” RATED R features “ Your Devil is a Ghost, ” a hard hitting prayer for resolution from past pain that will be added to SiriusXM Octane’s playlist next week.

RATED R also boasts the band’s most expansive lineup since 2015’s seminal Of Beauty and Rage. Former percussionist Joe Rickard, who contributed to 2017’s GONE and 2020’s DECLARATION, returns for mixing, programming and songwriting.

Taking its new music and fan favorites on an extensive international tour, RED launches the second leg of its The RATED R Tour in the U.S. Nov. 3 in Flint, MI and hits 13-cities across nine states before wrapping up at The Masquerade in Atlanta Nov. 19. Following another string of U.S. dates in the winter/spring, RED is set to rock 135,000+ Graspop Metal Meeting festivalgoers from the mainstage in Belgium next summer with plans to hit additional festivals before traveling to 26 European cities in the fall of 2024.

“He’s done great things on his own with bands such as In Flames and All That Remains,” says Anthony. “We love having him involved whenever we can. He’s a blast to work with and a big part of RED’s history, so it’s exciting to have him on board.”

The album also sees arranger/composer David Davidson handling orchestration, Teirney Armstrong sharing her spectacular voice, and various other guests playing their part across the sequence of songs, demonstrating the collaborative and creative hefts of RATED R.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, UNITED STATES, August 4, 2023/ EINPresswire.com / — GRAMMY ® nominated, RIAA Certified Gold ® -selling alternative metal band RED releases its first full-length studio recording in three years, RATED R, Sept. 29 from RED ENTERTAINMENT / The Fuel Music. The album can be pre-ordered/saved now via https://slinky.to/RatedR while the lead single, “Surrogates,” premiered on this week’s SiriusXM OctaneTest Drive and is available beginning today (Aug. 4) at digital and streaming outlets globally via https://slinky.to/Surrogates .

Consistently pairing sophisticated instrumentation with hard-hitting songwriting, dynamic performances and grippingly personal lyrics, RED’s evocative artistry takes center stage on its eighth studio album, RATED R. The follow-up to 2020’s chart-topping DECLARATION , the first release on their own independent label, the thought-provoking new album finds the band tackling several resonant and relevant topics amidst centering on the ideological and interpersonal divisions, confrontations and suffering of modern society.

“We’re examining how there’s almost no authentic human interaction and empathy anymore,” guitarist Anthony Armstrong explains. “People jump online to be and say whatever they want. They talk without listening, and it results in bullying and violence. Plus, we lose so much by focusing 24/7 on technology instead of stripping away everything that doesn’t matter and seeing how beautiful and healing it is to live with only what’s necessary.”

Bassist Randy Amstrong agrees: “Traditional family values and systems are broken and it’s causing chaos. Kids are forced to do active shooter drills at school, and it breaks our hearts. As the saying goes, hurt people hurt people, and we’re definitely seeing that. There’s also the notion that we learn by suffering and making the wrong decisions. As philosopher Meister Eckhart stated: ‘The soul does not grow by addition but by subtraction.’”

These sentiments influenced the sequencing and meta qualities of RATED R, as well as the album cover that represents the fake, almost plastic versions of humanity.

“It’s RATED R for RED and we always try to be a bit provocative to get our audience thinking with how our records look and what they’re called,” says Randy.

With “Surrogates” kicking things off with noise from news reports, symbolizing how overwhelming the media can be, the single will also become the first video from the album, drawing upon the band’s filmic past. The band heads to Utah later this month to do the filming.

“RED fans will love how ‘Surrogates’ builds upon the story we’ve been telling since our second LP (2009’s Innocence & Instinct). We’re going back to the 1890s Old West because it’s the prequel to the entire series,” Anthony explains.

Behind the scenes, RATED R is notable for two major changeups: Anthony taking over production duties from longtime partner Rob Graves and the addition of drummer Brian Medeiros officially joining the Armstrong brothers and inimitable singer Michael Barnes.

“Rob was busy with his solo project, so he gave us his blessing to try a different route,” Anthony reveals. “That said, we’ve absolutely kept the classic RED formula of symphonic elements, piano-driven atmospheres, heavy yet melodic guitarwork, and deep-seated and robustly delivered messages.”

This fall, and well into 2024, RED will be taking its hits, fan favorites and RATED R music on an extensive international tour. The first leg of the tour begins in the U.S. Sept. 8 in Joliet, IL and traverses 25-cities across 16 states before wrapping up at The Masquerade in Atlanta Nov. 19. Following a second string of U.S. dates in the winter/spring, RED is set to rock 135,000+ Graspop Metal Meeting festivalgoers from the mainstage in Belgium next summer with plans to hit additional festivals before traveling to 26 European cities in the fall of 2024.

“We released DECLARATION a month after the pandemic shutdowns began, so we never got to properly tour it. With RATED R, we can. What’s really cool is that we’ll be headlining and offering the complete RED auditory and visual live experience for the first time in years!” exclaims Anthony.

With RATED R, RED delivers a visceral and valuable statement. “This is our chance to reach people and inspire them with our music and what we stand for. We want people to take responsibility for change,” sums up Randy.

Red (also stylized R3D or RED) is an American rock band from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2002 by brothers guitarist Anthony Armstrong and bassist Randy Armstrong, with lead vocalist Michael Barnes. The band's first lineup also consisted of gutiarist Andrew Hendrix and drummer Jasen Rauch. Since 2014, the band's line-up has consisted of the core trio of the Armstrongs and Barnes with touring drummer Dan Johnson. After they recorded several demos that displayed a style of alternative, hard, and Christian rock music, Red landed a development deal with their longtime producer Rob Graves which led to a record deal with Christian label Essential Records in 2004. Their debut albums End of Silence (2006) and Innocence & Instinct (2009) were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album, and spawned the popular singles "Breathe Into Me" and "Death of Me". Red's mainstream popularity grew and their third album, Until We Have Faces (2011), reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, which was followed by Release the Panic (2013), which peaked at No. 7. After Of Beauty and Rage (2015), Red started work on their sixth album, Gone (2017), which is set for release in October 2017.

Red (formed in 2004) is an American rock band that has found success by incorporating the influences of alternative rock, heavy metal and post-grunge into their Christian rock aesthetic, hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.

Founded by guitarist Anthony Armstrong and his twin bass playing brother Randy Armstrong, along with lead vocalist Michael Barnes, drummer Andrew Hendrix, and guitarist Jasen Rauch, Red started out playing covers to youth groups in their hometown. It wasn’t long however before the group became tired of the pop format and began creating their own material with a hard-rock influence. Deriving their name from the colour of the blood of Christ, Red signed with the Dove award-winning producer Rob Graves’ production company in 2005 and subsequently the Sony BMG imprint, Essential Records. Prior to the release of their debut album “End of Silence”, drummer Hendrix left the band and was replaced by Hayden Lamb.

“End of Silence”, released in June 2006 earned strong reviews from a number of periodicals and spawned the singles “Breathe Into Me”, “Let Go”, “Hide/Pieces”, and “Already Over”. Produced by Rob Graves, the album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. Red subsequently embarked on a national tour alongside Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, and Candlebox, and their single “Breathe Into Me” won the Rock Recorded Song of the Year at the 38th GMA Dove Awards.

The band’s follow-up “Innocence & Instinct” was issued by Essential Records in February 2009. Aided by the singles “Fight Inside”, “Never Be the Same”, “Death of Me”, and “Ordinary World”, the album debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200. With the songwriting assistance of Breaking Benjamin’s guitarist Ben Burly, the album received critical acclaim and won the Dove Award for Best Rock Album in 2010. Following an extensive tour with the likes of Saving Abel, Pop Evil, Breaking Benjamin, Skillet and Thousand Foot Krutch, Red returned to the studio to focus on their third album.

“Until We Have Faces” arrived in 2011 once again earning strong reviews from the musical press. Featuring a heavier more polished sound the album produced the single “Faceless”, “Feed the Machine” and “Not Alone”, amongst others. “Until We Have Faces” was succeeded by “Release the Panic” in 2013, which peaked at No. Seven on the Billboard 200. The band’s theme of crafting highly-acclaimed albums, charting within the Top 20 continued with their album “Of Beauty and Rage”, released in 2015.

I first saw Red in 2007 with Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace, and they put on such a high energy performance that I knew I'd see them again! I've seen them in small venues and in a stadium setting, and they could easily get the crowd pumped! Having hot identical twins makes them even better! :) they get the crowd involved and make you feel like family. Mike sounds just like he does on albums!

Of the many artists I listen to, Red is one of two that I always come back to. Their timeless music is soul-piercing no matter what you're going through. Their live performance blew my socks off, and their passion and insane dedication shone through. Even though my ears are still ringing, it was so worth it and I'm so glad I went.

was a great show, loved disciple and Random hero as well as Red. The Bogart theater had the drums really loud and the singer really quite so you couldn't hear what they were saying which ruined a lot of the concert for me. The show was great though and i recommend you see them anywhere that has a working stadium.

chewiebirdbird’s profile image

Probably the most underrated rock band you'll hear. Has something for everyone. Hard, soft, melodic, even a bit of electronic.

Oh, did I mention, they're a Christian Rock band?

But don't worry, they aren't overbearing and their songs can be ambiguous, with no mention of God or Gospel.

Red Reign's melodic power hard rock opens for Nazareth

Red Reign is a four-person band with sounds that bridge yesterday and today with a hard rock melodic.

Red Reign , a band of four melodic power hard rockers from Richmond, Virginia, is coming to Brown County Music Center on May 15.

The band worked with Grammy Award-nominated multi-platinum producer David Ivory (Halestorm, Silvertide, The Roots, Patti Labelle) on their 2021 self-titled EP and again on their full-length "Don’t Look Back" (October 2023).

Famous guitarist George Lynch (Dokken and Lynch Mob) plays on the track "Don't Look Back."

Red Reign opens for Scottish hard rock band Nazareth at the Brown County Music Center. Nazareth caught global attention in the 1970s. Along with successful originals, "Hair of the Dog" (1975), was their first big hit album and included a version of "Love Hurts," to happy acclaim.

Opportunity brings Red Reign, Nazareth in concert together

Red Reign and Nazareth started touring together after Red Reign's booking agent and publicist seized the opportunity.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"We're not heavy metal," said Red Reign drummer and cofounder Sammy Lee. "(Our genre's) a little bit of a misconception. I stole the term 'power rock band' from David Lee Roth , because I love Van Halen." Roth is an American rock singer, with a highly dynamic stage personality. He was the lead vocalist for the hard rock band Van Halen, although they dispersed four years ago.

Red Reign has built a bridge of sound linking the '80s with today. Singer/guitarist Carlton “Bubba” McMichael, guitarist Stevie Shred, bassist Larry Moore and drummer Lee previously performed or toured with popular musicians including Dokken, Extreme, Jackyl, Lita Ford and Tesla.

Red Reign's album "Don’t Look Back" offers 10 tracks. Some of the band's favorites are the single “Don’t Look Back,” with its guest appearance from guitarist Lynch and “Here I Am” and “No Peace, No Love,” which has grabbed more than 120,000 views on YouTube.

“Here I Am” is about mental health. Red Reign wants no one to feel isolated with depression and anxiety. In addition, some of their newest material reflects the misery of COVID-19.

"Like everybody else, COVID really pushed us back," Lee said.

Van Halen attracted Lee's attention when he was 10. "I saw an interview with them on MTV," he said. "They are a power rock band. I added the 'melodic' to what we call our sound (to make it 'melodic power hard rock' music)."

Or you can simply call the Red Reign vibe "Red Reign: American rock and roll," a phrase Lee added to a promotional T-shirt.

What Lee really desires is Van-Halen-like audiences. "I saw a Van Halen concert in 1982 at the Hampton Coliseum (Hampton, Virginia). It seats about 10,000 people. That's want I want."

"If you can go onstage and sell something that people have never heard before and they really like it, that's an addictive drug."

Lee said McMichael does most of the songwriting, much of which is a tribute to multiple genres and eras, particularly Motown, '80s and '70s. Lee and McMichael founded Red Reign, and all four musicians are the original members.

"If we get together in a room and something sounds good we use it," Lee said.

What will the audience experience?

“Playing live shows is what we love," said drummer Lee over the phone. "'Don’t Look Back' made it to the Top 100 ADA/WMG Amazon sales."

A couple of things Lee has heard fans say are, "Finally, a new band that is doing music right. It's refreshing to hear good old rock and roll."

The men will play one song from an old EP, then the rest will be from the new "Don't Look Back" LP.

By the way, Red Reign never does covers, only original music.

Don't be deceived, just because the members wear black leather, Lee said. They do have softer sides. The look, however, is important to Lee.

Lee told the band members: "We're not only going to sound like a band, we're going to look like a band. We're going to act like it, look like it, sound like it."

All four members run to the merchandise table to greet their fans after each show. "We love meeting our fans." And that includes Lee hurrying to pack up all his drum equipment.

Music | indie band’s only north american “funeral” show this year will be at red rocks, arcade fire marks 20 years since influential debut album.

The LP, which launched the band’s influential sing-along anthems in the early 2000s, was released on Sept. 14, 2004, by indie stalwart Merge Records. Arcade Fire’s only 20th anniversary show will take place only a couple days later (give or take 20 years), on Sept. 16 at Red Rocks.

The band, however, is playing other shows this year in (see Atlanta this week) and outside of North America (Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal and England).

Presales for tickets start at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, the band said, followed by the public on-sale starting at 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, via axs.com . The code is Funeral20.

No opener has been announced, and ticket prices were not provided. Fans can RSVP at arcadefire.komi.io .

“To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Funeral, this fall we will be playing one show in North America, at one of our favorite venues: Red Rocks Amphitheatre on September 16,” according to the band’s Instagram account . “Presale begins May 8 at 10 a.m. MDT. Link in bio for tickets. We hope you will join us.”

The band’s anniversary arrives amid a cloud over its lead singer, Win Butler, who was alleged to have engaged in sexual misconduct and manipulated women in a late 2022 investigation by Pitchfork . Since then, openers such as Feist and Beck have dropped off Arcade Fire shows and, in Feist’s case, expressed disappointment over the reports.

Butler has said all of the alleged interactions were consensual, Pitchfork reported.

Note: This article was updated on Wednesday, May 8, to clarify that the Red Rocks concert is the only North American show celebrating “Funeral,” not the band’s only North American show of 2024.

The Ed Tracey Band, Mr. OK & The Last Light set to headline spring concert series at Red Cliffs

red the band tour

CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Have you stopped by The Terrace at Red Cliffs lately? It’s a new outdoor area featuring exciting amenities surrounded by great shopping and fabulous food.

red the band tour

This spring, Red Cliffs will further showcase The Terrace, among other recent improvements, with a concert series featuring dazzling performances from a diverse lineup of musicians based right here in Southern Utah.

“We love to support local artists as they grow,” general manager Cory Ashby said.

The spring concert series will continue with performances from The Ed Tracey Band on Saturday, May 11, and Mr. OK & The Last Light on Saturday, May 25. Both of these bands previously played at Red Cliffs and were a hit with audiences, Ashby said. Now, they’re back by popular demand.

Showcasing masterful musicianship, The Ed Tracey Band plays a dynamic mix of blues, classic rock, R&B and top 40 hits that’s just plain fun. The group came together as an offshoot of the Famous Unknowns, which performed dance tunes while dressed as Elvis, Neil Diamond and the Village People.

Ed Tracey leads the show with his high-energy antics and hilarious crowd interactions, even doing the hula hoop while singing hits from Journey, Led Zeppelin, Bruno Mars and The Black Crowes, to name a few. Based in Washington City, the band’s membership also features Gary Huff on vocals and lead guitar, Shane Stewart on bass, Steve Flaig on drums and Jedrick Fossati on keyboards and guitar.

Offering good vibes and heavy grooves, Mr. OK & The Last Light are sure to get everybody moving with their unique mix of funk, hip-hop and reggae. Local artist Mr. OK, best known for his signature sound that incorporates live looping technology, originally assembled The Last Light as a backing band to breathe new life into his solo arrangements. However, it didn’t take long for all six musicians to realize the enormous potential of their collaboration.

Every member of The Last Light brings an impressive musical résumé to the table. They’ve been creating together since the summer of 2021, blending various influences to develop a style of groove music unlike anything else in Southern Utah’s music scene. Their debut EP, “Music is the Medicine,” was released last year.

Each concert lasts from 7-9 p.m. and is free to attend. Limited seating will be provided, so guests are encouraged to bring a chair or a blanket and make themselves comfortable on the grassy area near the stage. Concertgoers can browse a variety of vendor booths and grab a bite to eat while they rock out.

There’s always something happening at Red Cliffs, Southern Utah’s place to shop, eat and play. All month long, Red Cliffs and Premier Health & Wellness will be celebrating moms with a series of spa day giveaways. Follow @ShopRedCliffs on Facebook and Instagram for more details.

And don’t miss the Paper Jams Music Fest on Saturday, June 1, from 7-9 p.m. Presented by Cloud 9 Vapor, this free mini music festival will feature Acoustic Adventure, Sky Allen Ledesma, No Proof and more of Southern Utah’s hottest emerging artists, plus prizes.

Red Cliffs, located at 1770 E. Red Cliffs Drive in St. George, has been Southern Utah’s premier retail destination since opening in 1990. As the only major indoor shopping center between Las Vegas and the Wasatch Front, it features more than 60 stores and nearly 450,000 square feet of retail space.

With grass areas, waterfalls and seating built into the landscape, The Terrace is the centerpiece of a significant rejuvenation project that aligns the mall’s offerings with what today’s customers want and need. That includes even more shopping and dining options, like the Al’s Sporting Goods, Tillys, WannaCinn and Kaiseki Sushi locations that opened last year.

“It’s a great place not only to shop but to spend your time,” Ashby said. “Holding these concerts and other free events throughout the year is a way that we can give back to the community for supporting us as we continue to grow.”

Why Rihanna, Jared Leto, Billy Porter, Ben Affleck and More Stars Skipped the 2024 Met Gala

Rihanna, jared leto, billy porter and ben affleck missed the 2024 met gala on may 6. find out why these celebrities skipped the red carpet at the metropolitan museum of art..

Fans can only imagine what wild prop   Jared Leto   would have brought to the 2024  Met Gala .

The Dallas Buyers Club actor—who has brought his own severed head and rocked a giant cat costume at Met Galas past—was noticeably absent from the May 6 event, as were stars like Taylor Swift   and Rihanna .

So, why did Leto miss out on the "Garden of Time"-themed bash? As he told E! News in April , he's "back on the road" touring with his rock band  30 Seconds to Mars . "It's been five years," shared the Oscar winner, who is prepping for his May 9 show in Krakow, Poland, as part of the Seasons World Tour.

But Leto wasn't the only celeb who was missing from steps of the Met. Also MIA from the party, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was Billy Porter , who told E! News in April , "I can't do everything. Daddy's tired."

The Pose star has been staying out of the spotlight as he continues to mourn the death of his mom Cloerinda Jean Johnson Porter-Ford in February. "I have to take care of myself so I'm doing that," Billy added, "and that means not going to the party sometimes."

As for Rihanna , she was planning to attend but sadly came down with the flu, her rep confirmed to E! News.

Taylor, meanwhile, appears to have been busy on her European tours, with the "Cruel Summer" singer set to light up the stage in Paris during her Eras Tour on May 9. Katy Perry , too, said she "had to work" on May 6 and couldn't attend—despite all those AI photos of her going viral.

But what the no-shows lacked, the 2024 Met Gala hosts brought in spades, with Bad Bunny , Zendaya , Chris Hemsworth  and Jennifer Lopez   bringing the house down with stellar ensembles. Still, J.Lo's husband Ben Affleck  was not by her side, with his rep telling TMZ he's in Los Angeles filming  The Accountant 2 .

2024 Kentucky Derby full finishing order and results: Mystik Dan wins in thrilling photo finish

red the band tour

Mystik Dan wins 150th Kentucky Derby

Mystik Dan is your winner of the 150th Kentucky Derby, winning in a photo finish by a hair over Sierra Leone and Forever Young. Mystik Dan entered the race with with 18-1 odds.

The underdog made up ground in the second half after the pack got off to a hot start with early leaders Fierceness and Track Phantom taking the pack through first half of the race in 46.63. The finishing order is 3-2-11-4.

Mystik Dan’s trainer Ken McPeek becomes the first trainer since 1952 to win the Oaks and Derby in the same year.

Kentucky Derby: Mystik Dan wins in photo finish over Sierra Leone, Forever Young

Kentucky Derby: Mystik Dan wins in photo finish over Sierra Leone, Forever Young

Andrew DeWitt

The 2024 Kentucky Derby was an incredible event that somehow exceeded its hype

Here’s what I learned about the Kentucky Derby today: It lives up to the hype and then some.

It’s a great event. The sound that comes from the grandstand as the horses make their turn towards home is something you can’t forget.

Hannah Vanbiber

Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan wore the same bridle to win their races

The press conference ends with the reveal that Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan wore the same bridle to win their races. McPeek says maybe they should auction it off to charity. “That’s a pretty lucky bridle. I gotta get back there and make sure nobody swipes it.”

A Kentucky Derby love story

“Years ago, when Lance and I were dating, he was late to pick me up because he was at the races. I wasn’t going to go,” says Sharilyn Gasaway. Why she’s glad she did? “I didn’t know but my mom knew he was going to ask me to marry him that night.”

McPeek says he felt sure they had won even with that photo finish, and then gets choked up sharing how it felt to turn to his wife who was standing there next to him to see it happen.

'I was just smiling the whole time'

“I was just smiling the whole time. It’s an amazing feeling when you have the horse under you and you now they’re gonna go forward and forward and forward.” Brian Hernandez reflects on how strong Mystik Dan felt throughout the race, from a powerful start with sure footing all the way to the finish.

An emotional win for Mystik Dan owner

“To me, this is for him,” says owner Lance Gasaway, whose father passed away a year ago today. “Dad would’ve loved it, he loved the game."

Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan were too fast for each other

Thorpedo Anna, the winner of Friday night's Kentucky Oaks, and Mystik Dan used to be training partners. But then they weren't anymore. Why? McPeek says they were too fast for each other and that you don’t want to push them over the edge.

Jockey jokes about photo finish wait

“From the fastest two minutes in sports to the longest,” says Brian Hernandez with a laugh, referencing the long minutes of waiting to hear which horse won the photo finish.

Mystik Dan jockey reflects on race

“Oh god, did we win the Kentucky Derby?” The thoughts on jockey Brian Hernandez’s mind the second after he crossed the finish line.

“My horse was just cruising along so comfortably, it never felt like we were going that quickly. Other horses were piling up and we had a little pocket there. We may have taken a little off the inside fence but that’s okay," said Hernandez.

Mystik Dan, the 'old soul'

“This horse is an old soul, he’s just so chill,” says Sharilyn Gasaway, one of Mystik Dan’s owners.

No Preakness guarantee yet

Trainer Kenneth McPeek didn’t commit to running in the Preakness. Says he doesn’t make fast moves, "never make a decision until you absolutely have to."

'I believe in mojo'

'I believe in mojo'

(Photo: Hannah Vanbiber / The Athletic)

"I believe in mojo," Mystik Dan trainer Kenneth McPeek said.

McPeek has praise for his jockey, too, not just the mojo. “This is typical Brian, he knows what he’s doing out there. We rarely second guess anything he does.”

Nando Di Fino

What happened to Fierceness?

Favorite Fierceness ultimately finished in 16th, which put him below the alternate, Epic Ride, The offspring of Justified, Just Steel and Just a Touch (who a few people picked as the winner on the broadcast) finished in the bottom five.

Fierceness’ low finish probably took down a lot of exacta and trifecta bets where bettors paired their longshot pick with the 3-1 favorite. I’m sure we’ll get some answers later as to what happened with Fierceness.

Mystik Dan’s jockey still in shock

“It still hasn’t sunk in," said Mystik Dan’s jockey Brian Hernandez. Hernandez hails from Lafayette, La., something Louisianans are very proud of.

"We have to thank all the guys back at the barn…. I don’t know how long it’ll take to sink in but it’s a surreal moment."

Full finishing order

Here is the full finishing order of the 150th Kentucky Derby. Fierceness, the big favorite before the race, finished just behind Epic Ride, who was a late add this week after a scratch.

The press is awaiting the winners. As are these hats and seats.

That was an expensive sip

Woodford Reserve made only 150 bottles of the “Baccarat” version. One of those has been set aside for the winner, although it wasn’t clear when they would receive the bottle.

The Baccarat edition costs $15,000. You can get the regular 150 bottle (seen on the stage) for about $45-50 at your local liquor store.

Someone got thirsty?

Here at the winners press conference, it appears someone broke into the Woodford Reserve bottle early and took a nice swig out of one of the bottles.

Given the level of drinking we’ve seen here today, that isn’t too surprising.

Oh, you thought the racing was over?

If you thought the party ended with the Kentucky Derby… not so fast. There’s still racing at Churchill Downs. In about 30 minutes, Race 13 will go off, with several Derby jockeys on different horses. Discreet Mischief is the 9/5 current favorite

the Pogues at Hackney Empire.

The Pogues review – triumphant tribute to energy and poetry of band’s early days

Hackney Empire, London An inspired cast of guests from Nadine Shah to Jim Sclavunos stand in for the late Shane MacGowan in a raucous run-through of the band’s debut album and other highlights

W ith late frontman Shane MacGowan replaced by a succession of guests, this 40th anniversary show for the Pogues’ debut album, Red Roses For Me, could so easily have been a pale imitation, glorified karaoke. And yet, it’s utterly triumphant. There are no overwrought speeches during this evening curated by the band’s co-founder Spider Stacy, only a brief dedication to MacGowan and other departed bandmates Darryl Hunt and Philip Chevron , and the Dubliners’ Ronnie Drew before The Irish Rover. Instead, they pay more fitting tribute by tapping back into the tornado of energy, passion and poetry that made the Pogues thrilling to begin with.

Within a nanosecond of opener Transmetropolitan, it’s pandemonium amid a sell-out crowd who burst instantly into a hundreds-strong mosh, bellowing back every word. The Battle Of Brisbane pushes things even higher; Greenland Whale Fisheries a notch higher than that. By Boys From The County Hell, it’s totally feral.

A relentless band, also featuring Goat Girl ’s Holly Mullineaux and Fontaines DC ’s Tom Coll, thrive off that energy. Garbed in suave black suits they pose and posture, James Fearnley wielding his accordion as if he’s Hendrix with a guitar. Their real genius, however, is the space they leave for their guests to make things their own. Experimental duo Stick in the Wheel bring a cutting edge to Dark Streets of London. A precise and dramatic Jim Sclavunos conveys every ounce of sorrow in anti-war song The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

James Fearnley.

Young Brighton newcomers the New Eves deliver a particularly manic Waxie’s Dargle, whirling their way around the stage between bombarding verses. Tellingly, it’s this that prompts Stacy to mention MacGowan for the first time. “That one’s for Shane. He’s here, I can tell,” he says, visibly emotional.

Stacy is a charming presence, using his tin whistle as a conductor’s baton, and takes the pressure off the occasion through constant self-effacement. “From the sublime to the ridiculous,” he jokes after Nadine Shah – who’s transcendent The Auld Triangle is the finest performance of all – is followed by the sprightly Repeal of the Licensing Laws.

Under Stacy’s easy control the gig sparks with spontaneity. Iona Zajac gatecrashes Daragh Lynch of Lankum’s Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go for a MacGowan-esque scream-off; Zajac, the New Eves and the Deadlians’ Sean Fitzgerald dance chaotically across the stage during The Irish Rover; a genuinely unplanned encore after the house lights come on sees all the guests at once reprise Streams Of Whiskey. Unruly but never unfriendly, emotional but never mawkish, there could be no finer tribute to MacGowan than this.
