The 10 Best River Cruise Lines in 2022

The best river cruises blend refined onboard accommodations with exciting itineraries along some of the world’s most memorable waterways.

river cruises of the world

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite river cruise lines.

After pandemic-related challenges at the beginning of last year, river ships got back to what they do best: exploring inland waterways in Europe, the United States, and select other destinations around the world. Travel + Leisure readers enthusiastically returned, setting out on voyages both classic and new.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

The top three in the river cruise lines were very close in their scores. Viking, the world's largest river cruise company, moved up two spots into the lead position. Tauck, the well-known tour and river-ship operator, retained its No. 2 spot. "The itinerary was thoughtful as well as instructive," wrote one reader who traveled on the Joy . In the No. 3 spot is Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, with praise that included this rave from one voter who sailed on the Maria Theresa : "This was an exceptional cruise. The staff was excellent. I can't say enough about this cruise line and this ship."

Aqua Expeditions, with journeys on the Peruvian Amazon, ranked No. 4, thanks in part to the sophisticated onboard dining. "Its cuisine is rich in local products and designed by one of the most renowned chefs in Peru," noted one reader. Closer to home, No. 5 American Queen Voyages (formerly American Queen Steamboat Company) earned praise — especially from older adults — for its leisurely cruises on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

Top-ranked Viking does all the major riverways of Europe, with ships also on the Nile and the Mekong, and, new in 2022, on the Mississippi. Readers praised the line's value proposition and shore experiences that go beyond the norm. The "Thinking Man's vacation" is the way one reader who sailed on a Viking ship on the Rhine river put it.

Find the full list of the best river cruise lines — and more on what sets Viking apart — below.

With its fleet of more than 50 contemporary "longships" on rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube, and the Seine, plus additional ships in Europe, Egypt, and Vietnam, T+L's top-ranked river cruise line for 2022 is often praised for its steadiness. "Having traveled on seven Viking longships that are virtually indistinguishable from one another, I believe it's the consistency that makes Viking one of our favorite ways to travel," said one reader. The longships are light-filled floating boutique hotels with a Scandinavian-design aesthetic, indoor and outdoor dining, and herb gardens up on top. Viking's carefully crafted itineraries and "good value" also received praise from readers. "Met wonderful new friends. Absolutely outstanding service and terrific food," said one fan.

Following a pandemic pause, river cruise ships have returned to inland waterways around the world, affording travelers a slow and immersive way to explore riverside towns and sights without the hassle of checking into and out of hotels and figuring out local transportation.

New itineraries and themed cruises in 2024 make it possible to go farther afield and explore areas of interest more deeply (such as Black history, cuisine, biking, and hiking). Alternatively, classic tried-and-true routes will bring guests to UNESCO World Heritage sites and other must-see as well as under-the-radar attractions, with most (if not all) of your accommodations, meals, excursions, and Wi-Fi included in your cruise fare.

If you are thinking of taking a river cruise, here are some new and favorite options to consider.

But for those who want to get their heart rate up a little to the backdrop of stunning Rhine River views, Avalon Waterways’ 166-passenger Avalon Expression cruises a seven-night “ Active & Discovery ” itinerary that combines classic sightseeing with hiking, biking, kayaking, and other adrenaline-boosting experiences. Passengers can e-bike through the Black Forest, trek along the river in Strasbourg, France, and kayak the canals of Amsterdam, among other activities. The cruises are available on select dates, from April to September.

Scenic’s tours include several Grand Cru Class estates—Château Franc Mayne and Château Myrat among them. Best river cruise lines around the world

Fran Golden

River cruising is the original slow way to travel, as you cruise the calm waters of inland waterways just like Cleopatra did on the Nile. The best river cruise ships are floating hotels with views galore, such as the castles and vineyards of the Rhine or the rice paddies and villages on stilts along the Mekong.

River ships dock near key attractions and feature mostly-inclusive pricing; fares include such perks as basic daily walking tours and wine and beer at meals. But beyond that standard, there are differences in the products. One person's idea of a great vacation may be extraordinary excursions such as an exclusive dinner in a chateau, while others may want spacious cabins or as much foie gras and French cheese as you can possibly eat. Want to relax in a swimming pool? That's doable on some but not all ships. And some river cruises are much more active than others with, for instance, biking and hiking tours.

Here's a rundown of the best river cruise lines traversing inland waterways around the world.

river cruises of the world

The world's largest river cruise line, Viking has a fleet that in Europe includes dozens of cutting-edge, 190-passenger "longships" with light-filled atriums, an appealing contemporary Scandinavian decor, and cabins with step-out balconies. An outdoor restaurant on the bow means you never miss a chance to take in unobstructed views.

The value-packed experience is geared toward adults and is consistently high quality. Destinations include all the popular rivers of Europe — such as the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Bordeaux, Rhone, Elbe and Douro — as well as the Nile in Egypt, the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, and the Mississippi.

For those seeking consistency and value, Viking is the best of the mainstream river companies.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways offers such popular upscale features as a top-deck swimming pool with swim-up bar and a big focus on cuisine; its multiple dining venues use high-quality ingredients and its Chef's Table experience is focused on fine local food and wine. The 106- to 196-passenger ships in Europe also have a wellness focus with small spas and fitness rooms and a fleet of bikes for use either on your own or on organized excursions.

AmaWaterways' partnership with Adventures by Disney means families are on board select chartered sailings on the Seine, Rhine and Danube. In addition to a big presence on all the main rivers of Europe, the line sails the Mekong and Nile, as well as the Chobe River of Botswana.

AmaWaterways hits a sweet spot for both foodies and active travelers (and families on the Disney sailings).

Uniworld positions itself as a high-end luxury line. Its ships are designed as floating palace hotels, employing marble, Murano glass and expensive fabrics in its over-the-top decor. Don't be surprised if you find yourself lounging in a room decked out in animal prints. The 159-passenger S.S. Catherine on the Rhone and Saone, for instance, boasts a $1 million art collection.

For foodies, foie gras, fresh oysters, regional cheeses and other local delicacies appear on menus. Guests in suites on select ships have butlers on call. Bikes are available to borrow, and the ships have gyms and spas, and, on some ships, lavish indoor pools. Family departures add active excursions, arts and crafts, and visits to amusement parks.

In addition to the major rivers of Europe, Uniworld cruises the less-traversed Po River in Italy (from Venice) and has ships on the Nile and Mekong as well as the Ganges in India.

If you are looking for Old World-style luxury with dramatic flair, Uniworld is your line.

Sleek ships with marble lobbies, mid-century furnishings and impressive art collections mark the Australian-owned Scenic as all about luxurious, high-end river cruising. Butler service is part of the scene, and so are free-flowing cocktails, e-bikes and six dining options – all for a passenger contingent of fewer than 170.

Included shore excursions go beyond the standard tours that most lines offer, such as a visit to the Szechenyi baths in Budapest. If you prefer independent travel, Scenic provides a nifty GPS gadget about the size of a cellphone, loaded with maps and commentary that is automatically activated at points of interest. Most of the ships have a pool on the sun deck, along with a fitness center and spa.

Routes include the Rhine and Danube, the Seine, Saone, Rhone, Garonne and Dordogne in Bordeaux, and Portugal's Douro, as well as the Mekong.

When it comes to an active, contemporary, luxury experience, Scenic is at the top.

Emerald Cruises

river cruises of the world

A sister line to Scenic but priced for budget-conscious travelers, Emerald continues the cool decor on its 182-passenger "Star Ships." The design highlight is an amazing infinity-style indoor/outdoor pool that converts (with a cover) into a movie theater at night.

Fares include most tours, even well-programmed full-day tours with lunch ashore. Destinations include the Danube, Rhine, Main, Rhone, and Douro, as well as the Mekong.

For those watching their pennies, Emerald is the best of the budget-priced ships.

Related: Are river cruises right for kids?

Leading luxury tour operator Tauck has its own fleet of award-winning 84- to 130-passenger river ships cruising the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Rhone and Seine. The big selling point here is that a Tauck tour director and three Tauck cruise directors are on board all departures, assuring that guests are catered to.

The ships deliver great food and wine and beyond-the-norm experiences on shore, such as the chance to sip local varietals in a wine cave. Special family departures — Tauck Bridges — cater to multigenerational families, adding such kid-friendly adventures as a scavenger hunt at the Louvre in Paris. Some staterooms on the newer ships are lofts with high ceilings and a raised seating area; some ships have a Jacuzzi and putting green on the sun deck. Local performers including dance troupes come on board to entertain.

The hand-held, everything-taken-care-of luxury experience that Tauck provides is hard to beat.

Avalon Waterways

river cruises of the world

Avalon is owned by the Globus Family of Brands, a tour operator company, and that experience comes into play on shore, with such VIP experiences as skipping the line at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Pricing on this line is middle of the road, with everything comfortable, reliable and not overly fussy. That said, on the company's sleek, 166-passenger Suite Ships, you can splurge on a Panorama Suite with sitting areas and glass doors that open to bring the fresh air in.

The company lets you personalize your experience down to the kind of pillows you prefer. All ships have a fitness room and fleet of bikes for tours in places such as Amsterdam and Cochem, Germany. There are also hiking excursions. The ships traverse waterways that include the Seine, Rhine, Danube, Douro, Main, Moselle, Rhone, Saone and Mekong.

Avalon is your best choice in the affordable, active category.

CroisiEurope Cruises

French line CroisiEurope caters to travelers on a tight budget and does river cruising in a friendly European style. Among the differences here is you won't just be cruising with fellow Americans. The passenger contingent is mostly bargain-seekers from France and Germany, and you'll hear onboard announcements in multiple languages. Everything from the food and service to the entertainment caters to that crowd. Some will love the idea of cruising like a European, while others may miss, for instance, a wide breadth of entree choices at dinner.

The family-run line has several dozen mostly older ships that operate on rivers that include the Danube, Rhine, Rhone and Saone but also such less-traversed waterways as the Elbe between Berlin and Prague, France's Loire, Spain's Guadalquivir and the Markermeer in the Netherlands. CroiseEurope also has ships on the Nile, Mekong, and Chobe River in Africa.

Try CroisiEurope if you want to grab super-low bargain fares and see Europe with a local crowd.

Grand Circle Line

Part of tour company Grand Circle Travel, this line is a popular affordable choice for travelers age 55-plus in Europe. The fleet of 46- to 140-passenger ships cruises waterways that include the Seine, Rhine, Mosel, Main, Danube and Rhone. Always onboard are Grand Circle program directors supplementing the onboard team and assuring a certain amount of handholding on ship and shore; your American tastes and expectations will be catered to. The line focuses attention on onboard enrichment, such as lectures, dance performances and cooking demonstrations. On shore, Grand Circle's signature experiences are a home visit with a local family and a school visit.

Grand Circle is a top choice company for solo travelers because the ships feature a good number of small cabins designed and priced for one, plus reduced single-supplement pricing for solos who want larger rooms.

American Cruise Lines

river cruises of the world

American Cruise Lines offers cruises on more U.S. waterways than any other river line. Of course, the company's fleet of U.S.-flagged 100- to 190-passenger river ships (including authentic paddlewheelers) travels the popular Mississippi and Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. But it also offers itineraries along the rivers of the San Francisco Bay Area (including a stop in Napa Valley's wine country), Florida's east coast (visiting Amelia Island and St. Augustine) and New York (offering overnight trips on the Hudson). Multi-state trips via the Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers round out the offerings.

The crew is all-American, and the ships play up the American theming. Civil War theme cruises are particularly popular.

The river cruises command big prices — from about $575 per person, per night for an ambiance that is comfortably upscale. Particularly on the newer ships, guests stay in big, hotel-like staterooms with indoor sitting areas and balconies (on the 175-passenger American Symphony, for instance, cabins range from 250 to 650 square feet). Local entertainment comes on board, the food is often locally sourced, and cocktail parties are included in the cruise fare.

These river cruises attract mostly older travelers. There are no bars, but that's a bonus in terms of socializing. Everyone goes to the cocktail parties, and getting to know your fellow passengers is a big part of the experience.

Aqua Expeditions

river cruises of the world

Crowd-free and high-end luxury cruises are this line's calling card both on the Peruvian Amazon and the Mekong. On the 32- to 40-passenger ships, you are embraced in designer decor and expanses of glass, so you don't miss any views. Exquisite gourmet cuisine in both destinations is overseen by top chefs known for their award-winning land-based restaurants, with local ingredients a focus. Tours ashore (sometimes two a day) are often via private, 10-passenger skiffs.

For the privilege of sailing with this line, you may have to pay $1000 per person, per night. The shortest sailings are three nights on the Amazon. Families with kids ages 7 and up are welcome.

Aqua Expeditions is hands down the best luxury product on the Amazon and Mekong; intimate cruising at its finest.

To many travelers, a cruise conjures up images of a huge ocean-going boat lumbering from one tropical island to another. However, there is another more intimate type of cruise that is just as popular with travelers today — the river cruise.

The boats for these cruises are typically much smaller than the behemoths that travel the sea and are the perfect platform for traveling by river from one interesting site or city to another. An overview of the best river cruises around the world:

10. Douro Cruise

Douro Cruise

The Douro River may not be as well known or as popular as some other European cruise destinations, but it’s not because it’s an unworthy destination. This wonderful little cruise, which takes travelers through Portugal and Spain, winds past picturesque vineyards and Medieval villages.

This cruise is especially perfect for anyone who loves to venture off the beaten track. A Douro River cruise trip itinerary normally starts at the river’s outlet in Porto and could include visits to local vineyards, castles and cathedrals.

9. Mississippi River Cruise

Mississippi River Cruise

The Mighty Mississippi, the fourth longest river in the world, cuts through the heart of America and through some of this country’s most beautiful scenery. Many of the ships that ply this river are designed to look like old-fashioned paddle-wheel steamboats, which can give a traveler the feeling that they are traveling back to a time when life was enjoyed at a more leisurely pace.

Depending on the itinerary, travelers on a Mississippi River cruise could float past quaint towns as well as major cities, such as St. Louis and Louisville . Again, depending on your itinerary, tour excursions could include visits to plantation homes as well as Battle of New Orleans battle sites. Cruises on the Mississippi can range from as little as a few hours to ones that last three weeks or even longer.

8. Kerala Backwaters Cruise

Kerala Backwaters Cruise

Travelers wanting to experience the beauty and charm of India’s backwaters should book a cruise through India’s amazing Kerala area.As they travel through this region’s canals and lovely lakes that form Kerala’s Backwaters, cruisers can enjoy living life like the locals.

The Kerala area boasts an unique ecosystem with fresh water from the rivers mixing with the saltwater from the Arabian Sea. Travelers can choose from several different types of boats in which to explore this area, including the famous kettuvallams that employ native oarsmen or motorized thatched-roof boats.

7. Volga River Cruise

Volga River Cruise

The Volga River is the longest in Europe and is often thought of as the national river of Russia. Depending on the itinerary, travelers on a Volga River cruise might visit St. Petersburg and Moscow or the Golden Ring cities. A trip down the Volga River is an excellent way for a traveler to experience both modern and old Russia. Again, depending on the itinerary, a Volga River cruise could offer excursions to the ballet, the circus or to visit one of Russia’s magnificent palaces.

6. Rhine River Cruise

Rhine River Cruise

It’s not surprising that a trip down the Rhine River is one of Europe’s most popular cruises. The Rhine River winds leisurely through a number of countries that are popular travel destinations, including Switzerland, France, Germany and Holland. Many consider the part between Koblenz to Bingen in Germany the most beautiful parts of the Rhine river.

Here travelers will enjoy some of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes and magnificent sites, including Medieval castles, lush vineyards and pass through picturesque towns that look like they came straight out of a fairy tale. Trips down the Rhine can be as short as a half day for those with limited time to multi-country itineraries that can last 11 days or even longer.

5. Mekong River Cruise

Mekong River Cruise

The Mekong River runs through China, Burma, Laos , Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. While cruising down the scenic Mekong, travelers will find an interesting blend of modern cities and floating villages from the past.

Depending on your itinerary, your cruise could include visits to such stunning sites as the ancient Angkor Watt temple complex in Cambodia or visits to floating villages and colorful markets of the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam. A Mekong River cruise is one of the best ways to experience and see the real Asia.

4. Danube River Cruise

Danube River Cruise

For many, a Danube River cruise is a dream come true. The Danube, which is the second longest river in Europe, passes through nine different countries, Austria, Bulgaria Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Romania Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine.

Depending on the itinerary, which can last from one day to a week or longer, a trip along the majestic Danube River can take a traveler past castles and imposing fortresses and through some of Europe’s most beautiful cities. For example, some Danube river cruises visit three European capitals, Budapest in Hungary, Vienna in Austria, and Bratislava in Slovakia.

3. Yangtze River Cruise

Yangtze River Cruise

The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world as well as the longest in Asia. It travels past some of China’s most interesting and famous sites, including the stunning Three Gorges (Qutang, Wu and Xiling Gorge).

On a Yangtze River cruise, travelers will sail through some of this immense country’s most gorgeous landscapes and may also have the option of taking shore excursions to various interesting sites, including to ancient temples and old ghost towns. The Yangtze River is also home for a number of this country’s endangered species, including the Chinese alligator and river dolphin. Yangtze river cruise trip lengths typically run between four and thirteen days.

2. Amazon River Cruise

Amazon River Cruise

The wild and untamed Amazon River has long captivated explorers who have longed to discover the secrets hidden in the dense jungles that line its banks. In the past, only the most adventurous souls would have dared to enter the Amazon Basin, but, fortunately, this secretive world is much easier for travelers to visit today.

A number of cruise boats rove the Amazon. Accommodations on these boats range from modest to luxurious. Some boats feature cabins that even boast large picture windows so that travelers can view their surroundings from the comforts of their air-conditioned room.

Though the Amazon river spans eight South American countries, most larger vessels’ itineraries are limited to sections between the Brazilian ports of Manaus and Belém. Smaller cruise ships, however can also venture further upriver to Iquitos in Peru, incorporating stops in more undeveloped regions of the Peruvian Amazon.

1. River Nile Cruise

River Nile Cruise

Because Egypt basically grew up on the banks of the Nile, a cruise is one of the best ways to experience Egypt and all of its glorious ancient sites, including the pyramids and the Sphinx. It’s estimated that there are over 400 cruise ships plying the mighty Nile River, so travelers will have many vessels to choose from.

Some of these cruise ships offer such amenities as pools, sundecks and spas. Meals and some excursions are typically included in the cruise price. The average Nile River cruise lasts between three and seven days and travels between Luxor and Aswan.

The Top River Cruise Lines

Top River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

Wondering where to go on a river cruise? It doesn’t get much more impressive than the Amazon, the world’s largest river by water flow . The majority of the river runs through Peru and Brazil, and each holds its own unique treasures. In Peru, you can cruise to the Tambopata National Reserve where you’ll marvel at all the plants and animals including giant river otters, monkeys, caimans, birds and the elusive anaconda. In Brazil, you can watch how the waters of the Rio Negro merge with the Solimões. Or take a canoe trip through the jungle to try piranha fishing or even spot capybaras or anacondas.

Best time to go: The rainy season from December to May. This is when the smaller tributaries of the Amazon fill up, meaning better cruising access and incredible wildlife watching.

Stemming from the great Zambezi River, the Chobe River runs through Botswana into the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. The park is famed for its massive wild herds of elephants and stunning natural landscapes. You’ll also spot hippos, buffalos, lions and zebras splashing at the river banks, and hundreds of bird species flying overhead. Whether you want to float through the reeds in a makoro (dugout canoe), or cruise the length of the river in a sightseeing boat, a trip down the Chobe River will be full of wonders.

Best time to go: The dry season from April to October. As inland water sources become scarce, the animals gather around the Chobe River, giving you the best chance of spotting some incredible wildlife.

Whether you want to soak up the food, culture, history or nature, the best way to discover the soul of the USA is a riverboat cruise down the Mississippi.

Best time to go: Avoid the extreme temperatures of summer and winter and enjoy the Mississippi River in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October).

From the douro to the mekong, these are the rivers you should be targeting for your next voyage.

river cruises of the world

R iver cruising offers a completely different experience to an ocean voyage. Wherever you go — be it traversing the Amazon, winding through the backwaters of Kerala or cruising past fairytale castles on the Rhine — you’re guaranteed an intimate experience. The ships are much smaller and you’ll sail through the heart of one or more countries, with abundant opportunities to explore each stop in depth. But which waters should you take to first? Here’s our pick of the best river cruises in the world.

A barge on the Rhône (Getty Images)

1. The Rhône

River cruises pass through some of the loveliest countryside in France , which shimmers in a haze of purple during lavender season. Boats sail on the Saône and the Rhône between Chalon-sur-Saône or Lyons and the ports near the Rhône delta, such as Avignon, Tarascon and Arles. The Romans left their mark in the magnificent amphitheatre at Arles and the graceful Pont du Gard, while the Palais des Papes at Avignon, centre of the medieval Christian world, is truly impressive. Further north, the wine country around Lyons awaits, as well as the city itself, rightly proud of its culinary heritage. You’ll dock in the heart of some charming old towns along the way too, from Tournon, guarded by a castle on a bluff, to medieval Viviers, a tangle of cobbled streets clinging to the side of the hill.

How to do it Go on one of the wine-themed cruises from Avalon Waterways — it covers some of the loveliest bits of Burgundy and Provence.

The Danube at Budapest (Alamy)

2. The Danube

The Danube rises in the Black Forest, cutting across central Europe and forcing its way through the jagged Iron Gates Gorge before fragmenting into 2,200 square miles of marshy, wildlife-rich delta at the Black Sea. A cruise packs in plenty of cultural attractions, from the baroque elegance of Vienna to the old centre of Bratislava in Slovakia, dominated by an imposing 17th-century castle. Buzzing Budapest is especially beautiful at night, when floodlights illuminate the bridges and the hilltop Castle District. You’ll sail along the Wachau Valley, one of Austria ’s most notable wine regions, visiting Melk, with its magnificent abbey, and medieval Dürnstein. Day trips include the fairytale Czech town of Cesky Krumlov and the Austrian city of Salzburg. There’s a cruise for every budget on this popular river, from short breaks to the all-inclusive luxury lines.

How to do it A Taste of the Danube is a short sailing (four days) from Avalon Waterways, which covers all the main stops with the option to extend your stay.

The Yangtze (Sanctuary Retreats)

3. The Yangtze

Asia ’s longest river snakes its way through the countryside for 3,900 miles, but cruises explore a much shorter section: the dramatic canyons and jagged mountains of the Three Gorges. Most Yangtze cruises are part of a longer itinerary around China that includes the magnificent Terracotta Army at Xi’an, Beijing’s sprawling Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the bright lights of Shanghai. You’ll spy intricate temples, precarious walkways on the cliffs, mysterious hanging coffins suspended high above the water, and the eerie Fengdu Ghost City on Ming Mountain. In stark contrast, the Three Gorges Dam is an engineering marvel on an awesome scale. Aim for April, May, September or October — summer is hot and humid, while winter tends to be cold and gloomy.

The Moselle at Bernkastel (Alamy)

4. The Moselle

The narrow Moselle twists and turns its way through tranquil vineyards and the wooded hills of Luxembourg, France and Germany . Cruises usually operate between Luxembourg or Trier and Koblenz, where the river flows into the Rhine. The Roman antiquities at Trier are impressive, particularly the Porta Nigra city gate. Cochem is a classically pretty wine-producing town, dominated by the fairytale Reichsburg Castle, while Bernkastel’s cobbled centre dates back to the 15th century. Wine tasting is a theme wherever you visit.

How to do it The Moselle Valley — Vines & Views cruise from Tui sails round-trip from Frankfurt and includes stops in Trier and Koblenz.

The Seine in Paris

5. The Seine

Ships sail on the Seine from the heart of Paris to the river’s wide mouth at Le Havre, passing through bucolic scenes of willow-draped banks, medieval towns and meadows where plump cattle and apple orchards are farmed to produce camembert, cider and calvados. The museums, galleries and designer shops of Paris aside, highlights of a Seine cruise include the intricate Palace of Versailles and medieval Rouen. From Vernon, there’s a chance to visit Monet’s beautiful garden at Giverny, while some itineraries feature Mont St Michel and the D-Day beaches, as well as a day at Honfleur, a jumble of half-timbered houses around a 17th-century fishing harbour.

How to do it The Paris to Normandy itinerary with Avalon Waterways is the classic sailing, but you can also opt to start your trip in London.

Cruising in Kerala (Abhishek Prasad/Unsplash)

6. Kerala backwaters

Kerala’s intricate network of canals, lakes and rivers is lined with mangroves and coconut palms, with emerald paddy fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Alleppey is the usual starting point for rice-barge cruises, which take in the vast, shallow Lake Vembanad, including Kumarakom village, laced with canals, and Fort Kochi in the enchantingly crumbling district of Cochin. Otherwise, the joy of a rice-barge voyage is life along the waterways: women in dazzling saris, washing clothes at the water’s edge; the turquoise flash of a kingfisher; schoolchildren running along the banks; and elaborate temples and churches standing tall.

How to do it Join the Exodus 14-day Tropical South itinerary to see Kerala and its neighbour Tamil Nadu.

The old town hall in Bamberg (Alamy)

7. The Main

Germany’s often overlooked Main trickles through flourishing water meadows against a setting of wooded hills, with some of the country’s most spectacular ancient towns perched on its marshy banks. Medieval Bamberg’s most famous sight is the crooked town hall, clinging to an island in the river. The city is known for its smoked beer, a tasting of which may be included in a shore excursion. Würzburg’s Residenz palace is considered a masterpiece of baroque architecture, while other towns along the banks are straight out of the Grimms’ fairytales, not least Miltenberg, a perfectly preserved medieval settlement with cobbled streets and squares lined with colourful half-timbered houses.

How to do it You have two options with Avalon Waterways. The Germany Grandeur tour is longer and takes in more sights, but the Festive Season in the Heart of Germany itinerary is perfect for soaking up the Christmas spirit.

The Amazon in Peru (G Adventures)

8. The Amazon

A voyage along the tributaries of the mighty Amazon takes you through some of the most remote terrain on the planet, dipping into Peru ’s steamy Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, with plenty of chances to spot extraordinary wildlife. You’ll explore skinny, snaking waterways by skiff, on the lookout for pink river dolphins, caiman and turtles. Three-toed sloths snooze in the trees, while howler and capuchin monkeys scamper through the branches and scarlet macaws fly low over the forest canopy. You can head off on a hike with a guide, as well as kayak, fish for piranha and meet the indigenous people who live along the banks.

How to do it Mixing cruising with city and heritage site tours is Avalon Waterways’ From the Inca Empire to the Peruvian Amazon itinerary.

Sanctuary Sun Boat IV on the Nile (Sanctuary Retreats)

9. The Nile

One of the classic cruises, a journey along the Nile is a voyage back in time. You can marvel at 4,000 years of history, from ancient temples to royal tombs, with a luxurious river ship as a base. Most river cruise lines ply the stretch between Luxor and Aswan. Sights include the atmospheric temples of Karnak, Luxor, Philae and Kom Ombo, as well as the exquisitely painted tombs concealed under the surface of the dusty Valley of the Kings. One of the great pleasures of a Nile cruise, though, is simply taking in life along the river — the distant call to prayer, roosters crowing, water buffalo standing like statues in the shallows, and desert dunes that change colour as the sun crosses the sky.

How to do it Exodos’s Nile itinerary starts in Cairo and travels all the way down to Abu Simbel.

• Best cruises on the Nile

The church of San Michele in Isola, Venice (Getty Images)

10. The Po and the Venetian Lagoon

Using Venice ’s central San Basilio dock as a base, cruises on the misty Venetian Lagoon include visits to colour-popping islands, historic towns and Italy ’s culinary capital, Bologna. Cruises visit Murano island, famed for its glass-blowing workshops, and photogenic Burano, where houses are painted in shades from lime green to shocking pink. You’ll visit Venice itself, of course, where you can fawn over the greeny-blue canals and tranquil, hidden squares, as well as Piazza San Marco, the Palazzo Ducale and the Rialto Bridge.

How to do it The Venice and the Jewels of Veneto tour from Uniworld offers you the chance to take it easy in Italy.

A Viking Longship on the Rhine (Viking)

11. The Rhine

Europe ’s busiest waterway carves a course from Switzerland to the North Sea, through scenery ranging from the wooded hills of the Black Forest to the steep vineyards flanking the Rhine Gorge. The Rhine Valley is packed with historical wonders, from the glorious medieval centre of Strasbourg to the castles that guard every bend along the craggy gorge between Bingen and Koblenz. Further north, Cologne’s mighty cathedral beckons. Most voyages end in Amsterdam for a fitting dose of culture in its many museums and galleries. Cruises operate almost year-round on the Rhine, starting in late March and running until late November. December is Christmas market season — expect snow-dusted riverside towns busy with shoppers at spice-scented market stalls.

How to do it Try the Rhine Getaway cruise from Viking River Cruises, a castles and cathedrals itinerary that covers all the highlights.

Porto and the River Douro (Getty Images)

12. The Douro

Every Douro cruise is bookended by the lovely old cities of Porto in Portugal and, across the border in Spain , Salamanca with its ancient university. It makes for a river voyage that’s rich in culture. Through much of the Douro’s valley, vineyards follow the contours of sheer-sided hills, producing the port wine that the region is famous for. Beyond the old city of Porto, a jumble of baroque bell towers and improbably skinny 16th-century houses, highlights include the riverside town of Pinhao, with its intricately tiled railway station and futuristic Coa Museum, gateway to one of the world’s most important sites of palaeolithic rock art.

How to do it Scenic’s Delightful Douro itinerary is a round trip from Porto on a luxury small ship with a maximum of 96 passengers.

13. Dutch waterways

Cruises operate every spring through the network of rivers and canals criss-crossing the Netherlands and Belgium , with most passengers setting sail to gaze at the dazzling Dutch bulb fields in full bloom. Cruises start in Amsterdam, with its canals, museums and galleries, and stop in towns including the gorgeous, arty city of Antwerp, as well as Arnhem, Ghent and Rotterdam. Keukenhof Gardens in the Dutch town of Lisse, with some seven million flowers planted in intricate displays, is a highlight.

How to do it The Tulips & Windmills itinerary from Viking sails round-trip from Amsterdam, making it a great option for no-fly cruising too.

• Best cruises from Southampton

14. The Eastern Danube

The eastern stretch of the Danube, from Budapest to the marshy delta on the Black Sea, provides one of the most intriguing river cruises in Europe, visiting areas that until 30 years ago were largely closed to the outside world. Beyond Budapest, the Danube cuts across the Hungarian steppe before forcing its way through the rugged, 83-mile Iron Gates Gorge. Make time to see the dynamic Serbian capital, Belgrade, an energetic mix of brutalist apartment blocks and elegant belle époque mansions, as well as the Petrovaradin Fortress at Novi Sad. Belogradchik, near Vidin, is extraordinary; a wind-sculpted sandstone rock outcrop towering above a wooded plain, with the remnants of a Roman fortress clinging to the top. If you can, add a few days to your cruise in Transylvania, an enchanting landscape of jagged, cloud-draped mountains and dense forest.

How to do it Scenic’s Black Sea Explorer tour takes you from Budapest to Bucharest, with the option to include a trip to Transylvania.

The Tonle Sap in Cambodia (Alamy)

15. The Mekong

A cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam on the Mekong and its tributary, the Tonle Sap, is a fascinating insight into the culture, cuisine and history of Indochina. The highlights of a Mekong river cruise include arty Siem Reap and the extraordinary temples of Angkor Thum — and, in Vietnam, fast-paced Ho Chi Minh City, where sizzling street-food stalls and the legacy of the Vietnam War jostle for attention alongside futuristic skyscrapers. In Phnom Penh you’ll learn about the history of Cambodia under the dictator Pol Pot. In between, excursions range from visits to craft workshops, temples and riverside markets as rural life drifts by on the lush banks.

How to do it Pandaw’s Classic Mekong cruise offers a great introduction to the region and there’s no single supplement on selected sailings.

Creole Queen cruises along the Mississippi in New Orleans (Alamy)

16. The Mississippi

Sultry southern nights, spicy gumbo and jambalaya and the foot-tapping jazz bars of New Orleans are all part of a voyage on the mighty Mississippi. Stories of the Civil War, slavery and the birth of jazz unfold during a week-long voyage. You’ll see plantation houses, centuries-old oak trees, evocative war memorials and sugar cane rippling in the breeze. The region’s musical heritage creates a backdrop to any cruise, from the jazz clubs of New Orleans’ French Quarter to the atmospheric blues bars of Memphis. Shore excursions involve boating the bayous and swamps in search of alligators, taking the BB King trail, and a visit to the high-security Louisiana State Penitentiary.

How to do it Most ships sailing the Mississippi are ornate paddlewheelers, but Viking River Cruises’ Viking Mississippi, launched in 2022, brings a touch of Scandi-chic to the river.

• Best cruises in the US

Pauillac in the Gironde (Alamy)

17. The Garonne and Gironde

A voyage along the Garonne and out into the vast Gironde estuary passes rolling vineyards surrounding grand châteaux, with chances to sample the wares of the world’s most legendary wine-growing region in every port. Ships sail on a round-trip from Bordeaux, an elegant city sweeping around a half-moon curve of the Garonne. Top sights include the Miroir d’Eau, or water mirror, and the impressive La Cité du Vin wine museum, but waterfront bistros beckon too. During the cruise, château visits compete with opportunities for cycling through the vineyards, wandering around the massive citadel at Blaye and exploring gorgeous little towns such as Saint-Émilion and Pauillac.

How to do it CroisiEurope’s A Cruise in Aquitaine itinerary is perfect for any wine lover.

Melnik in the Czech Republic (Alamy)

18. The Elbe

A voyage along the Elbe is a journey through the cultural and architectural history of eastern Germany and the Czech Republic. Cruise lines usually offer time before and after the voyage in two sharply contrasting cities: cosmopolitan Berlin and bohemian Prague. Cultural attractions come thick and fast on an Elbe voyage. Itineraries include the rococo Sanssouci, the summer residence of Frederick the Great in Potsdam, and the art deco marvels of Dessau. Venture into Wittenberg to explore the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation and visit the 1,000-year-old city of Meissen, famed for its porcelain. Or plump for Dresden and you’ll uncover the lavish Saxon crown jewels in the Royal Palace. A typical Elbe cruise ends in Melnik, although boats with a shallower draft can join the Vltava river and sail all the way into Prague.

Top River Cruise Itineraries Around the World

author image

See recent posts by Andrea Rotondo

River cruising has truly come into its own over the past few years. While previously targeting retirees, cruise companies have made great strides to freshen their ships and itineraries to appeal to younger couples, and even families. Whether you want to step inside a fairy-tale and visit Europe's incredible castles and vineyards, see the wildlife of the Amazon, or get a peek at Asia's most ancient sights, there's a river cruise itinerary that will accommodate you. Here are the top river cruise itineraries around the world.

Courtesy of Avalon Waterways

River cruising was born in Europe, where meandering waterways connect a web of countries that are rich in history, culture, and regional cuisine. Europe’s riverside towns and villages are especially atmospheric in late spring, early summer, fall, and during the holiday season when Christmas markets pop up. Travelers wanting to sample a river cruise for the first time often begin on one of Europe’s most famed rivers. Here are the options.

Most first-timers select a Danube River cruise due to the incredible array of destinations packed into the itinerary. The river, which stretches from the North Sea to the Black Sea, cuts through Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine. The river is actually segmented into three sections — the Upper, Middle, and Lower Danube — and cruise lines offer explorations of all. Expect to see voyages between Budapest and Vienna, but — depending on the length of the cruise — you could transit between Nuremberg and Passau in Germany. Lower Danube itineraries often begin or end in Bucharest, Romania.

Top Ports of Call: Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Melk, Vienna, and Budapest

What to Look For: Budapest’s Castle District, Wachau Valley, vineyards, and riverside bike paths

Who to Sail With: AmaWaterways , APT, A-Rosa, Avalon, CroisiEurope, Crystal River Cruises , Emerald, Gate 1 Travel, Grand Circle, Riviera, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld, Vantage, or Viking

Cruising the Rhine affords the opportunity to visit German ports, but you may also stop in France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland (depending on the itinerary you select). If you want to pull out all the stops, look for itineraries that are marked “Grand Voyage.” These combo tours offer a route along both the Rhine and Danube, adding Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic to the mix. Note that the Rhine can have high water levels in May and June — particularly between Vienna and Cologne. This may require transferring to a bus to reach certain ports.

Top Ports of Call: Amsterdam, Basel, Cologne, Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Rüdesheim am Rhein

What to Look For: Rhine Gorge (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Black Forest, Marksburg Castle, vineyards, and riverside bike paths

Who to Sail With: AmaWaterways , Avalon, CroisiEurope, Crystal River Cruises , Gate 1 Travel, Emerald, Riviera, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld, or Viking

As one of the longest tributaries of the Rhine, the Moselle offers itineraries of its own. Some stretches of the river have a more industrial feel, but cruisers are rewarded with winding banks where medieval villages are tucked away.

Top Ports of Call: Koblenz, Trier, Traben-Trarbach, and Zell

What to Look For: Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (Koblenz), Upper Middle Rhine Valley (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Reichsburg Castle (Cochem), and wine festivals

Who to Sail With: AmaWaterways, APT, A-Rosa, Avalon, CroisiEurope, Crystal River Cruises, Emerald, Riviera, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld, or Viking

Many river cruises bring you to a variety of countries. However, if you select a Rhone River cruise, you’ll only explore destinations in France. That can be a plus or minus, depending on how you look at it. While the cruise itself isn’t as scenic as the voyages on the Rhine or Danube, the ports have lots of culture and history. The food served onboard is also delectable, as it borrows from French cuisine. One thing to note: Summer can be windy along the Rhone.

Top Ports of Call: Lyon, Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Tournon, and Vienne

What to Look For: Les Halles food market (Lyon); Arles, Avignon, and Pont du Gard (UNESCO World Heritage sites); the French Riviera (Cote d’Azur); “Village Day” in Viviers; vineyards and wine tasting in Burgundy and Beaujolais; and riverside bike paths

Who to Sail With: AmaWaterways, Avalon, CroisiEurope, Emerald, Riviera, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld, or Viking

Volga River

Despite recent political events that cast a shadow on U.S.-Russia relations, the country continues to beguile visitors with its onion-dome buildings, incredible palaces like Peterhof, and art museums, including the Hermitage. Itineraries run between Moscow and St. Petersburg and nearly all cruise lines schedule an overnight in both cities so passengers can really dig into the destinations. While these cruises are labeled as Volga River explorations, you’ll also sail along some other waterways, including lakes and canals.

Top Ports of Call: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yaroslavl, and Kizhi Island

What to Look For: St. Petersburg, Moscow, Open-Air Museum of History, Architecture and Ethnography (Kizhi Island), Yaroslavl (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Monastery of St. Cyril on the White Lake (Kuzino), and rural villages

Who to Sail With: CroisiEurope, Emerald, Gate 1 Travel, Scenic, Uniworld, or Viking

Lesser-Known Rivers

There are other rivers throughout Europe that are building their reputations for river cruises. If you’ve done all of the above voyages and are looking for something new, check out the Elbe, which transits through the Czech Republic and Germany. Italy’s Po and Portugal’s Douro are also solid picks.

Courtesy of AmaWaterways

Ten years ago, China’s Yangtze was the river cruise darling of Asia. Today, travelers have many more choices, including the popular Mekong, which travels through Cambodia and Vietnam.

Yangtze River

It is not possible to explore the entire length of the Yangtze in one trip, since it begins in the Tibetan Plateau and traverses the entire country before joining the East China Sea near Shanghai. Instead, most lines focus on the Three Gorges region, where you can see traditional villages, forests, gorges, and mountain landscapes. You’ll find plenty of cruise and land tour combinations that allow you to explore a few major Chinese cities, like Shanghai, Beijing, and Xi’an, before boarding the vessel.

Top Ports of Call: Chongqing, Yichang, Lijiang, Guilin, Chengdu, and Wuhan

What to Look For: Three Gorges Dam, Shibaozhai Temple, pandas at Chongqing Zoo, Chinese opera, Peking duck, Terracotta Army, and Great Wall

Who to Sail With: Avalon, Sanctuary Retreats, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld, Victoria, or Viking

Mekong River

The ever-popular Mekong River itineraries allow you to visit bustling cities and rural villages in both Vietnam and Cambodia. South America

Adventure seekers and wildlife enthusiasts need not look further than South America to find their next river cruise vacation. The Amazon River was previously out of reach due to its remote location, but now several cruise companies have top-of-the-line ships (oceangoing and riverboats) that sail this waterway and its tributaries. The Amazon stretches 4,000 miles through Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. Which part of the river you explore will depend on the season you travel and the ship you pick. Brazilian cruises start in Manaus or Rio de Janeiro and end in Macapa; Ecuador trips actually sail the Napo River, a tributary of the Amazon; and Peruvian itineraries go to and from Iquitos and may include pre- or post-cruise visits to Machu Picchu and/or Lake Titicaca.

Top Ports of Call: Iquitos City, Nauta, and Pacaya-Samiria national Reserve

What to Look For: Pink and gray freshwater dolphins, monkeys, black jaguars, and giant lily pads

Who to Sail With: Aqua Expeditions, Avalon, International Expeditions, or Lindblad Expeditions

When you want to stick closer to home, a Mississippi River cruise could be just the ticket. These voyages, which take place aboard a traditional paddle wheeler or modern riverboat, are infused with American history. The Mississippi River, spanning about 2,300 miles, is too long to explore in one cruise. That’s why the two operators that ply this river offer segments that explore the Lower Mississippi (between New Orleans and Memphis), the Middle Mississippi (between Memphis and St. Louis), and the Upper Mississippi (between St. Louis and St. Paul).

Top Ports of Call: Lower (Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Natchez, Mississippi; Helena, Arkansas), Middle (Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Paducah, Kentucky; Chester, Illinois), and Upper (Hannibal, Missouri; Davenport, Iowa; La Crosse, Wisconsin; Red Wing, Minnesota)

What to Look For: Plantations like Oak Alley and Nottoway, New Orleans’ French Quarter, the Civil War battlefield of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Memphis’ Graceland

Who to Sail With: American Cruise Lines or American Queen Steamboat Company

Africa’s river cruise industry is in its infancy, with limited options. AmaWaterways offers a short, multiday Chobe River cruise between Kasane, Botswana; Namibia; and Victoria Falls on the 28-passenger Zambezi Queen. Folks can explore Chobe National Park and take a land tour that includes South Africa’s Cape Town and Victoria Falls, which can be viewed from either Zambia or Zimbabwe. CroisiEurope also offers an African river cruise that explores Lake Kariba on the 16-passenger African Dream, plus throws in a cruise along the Zambezi River for good measure.

Egypt has always been a bucket-list destination, thanks to its ancient history and well-preserved pyramids and artifacts. However, political turmoil has softened demand for Nile River cruises. For travelers willing to make the trip, incredible sights await. While you can book a cruise for as short as three nights, you may as well go for a weeklong option since you’ve come all this way. Visit between October and April when temperatures are more manageable. Most itineraries travel between Aswan and Luxor, but nearly all operators sell a pre- or post-cruise land component in Cairo so you can also explore the Egyptian Museum and take an excursion to Giza to see the Great Sphinx.

Top Ports of Call: Luxor, Aswan, Karnak, Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Esna

What to Look For: Temple of Philae, Unfinished Obelisk, the High Dam, the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Edfu Temple, Kom Ombo

Who to Sail With: Avalon, Emerald, Sanctuary Retreats, Scenic, Uniworld, or Viking

The Best Mississippi River Cruises to Discover America's Heartland

By Jackie Sheckler Finch

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Land Nature Outdoors Plant Vegetation Tree Woodland and Water

The luxury ships and historic tours are nice, yes. But the real star of Mississippi River cruises has always been the river. There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

The challenge modern travelers now face is when, where, and how to go about this iconic American voyage . Below, see our answers to these frequently asked questions, plus our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024.

Which cruise lines do Mississippi River cruises?

After American Queen Voyages shut down in February, only two Mississippi River cruise lines currently remain in operation.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, American Cruise Lines (ACL) has a fleet of more than 20 American-built ships sailing across the country and remains family-owned and American-crewed. ACL offers a Mississippi River fleet of three luxurious 180-passenger modern riverboats– American Melody , American Symphony , and American Serenade —plus two classic paddlewheel ships, the 180-passenger American Splendor and the 150-passenger American Heritage.

The new kid on the Mississippi is the Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger, five-deck vessel that first set sail in September 2022. The cutting-edge cruise is Viking’s first foray in the US, adding to their fleet of more than 90 ocean, river, and expedition vessels navigating the world’s seven continents.

What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Viking offers complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines offers complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. Gratuities are also included in American Cruise Lines fares.

What is the best time of year to go on a river cruise?

Spring (late March through mid-June) and autumn (September through November) are the best times of year to go on a river cruise in the US. Spring blossoms add a colorful touch to the shoreline, and you can never go wrong with autumn foliage. The temperatures are mild, if not pleasantly cool, and passengers are eager to welcome a new spring travel season—or to enjoy one last autumn river adventure before winter arrives.

What month is best for a Mississippi River cruise?

If we had to pick just one, September is the best month for a Mississippi River cruise. The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.

Below, see our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024, featuring stops in iconic American cities like Nashville , Memphis , and New Orleans .

22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

Enjoy the charms of America’s great river on a journey aboard the Viking Mississippi from New Orleans to Red Wing, departing September 20. Custom built to sail American waters, the vessel features river-facing staterooms with either French or step-out balconies.

Stops include Baton Rouge and St. Francisville in Louisiana; Natchez, Vicksburg, Greenville, and Rosedale in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; Paducah in Kentucky; Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, and Hannibal in Missouri; Burlington, Quad Cities, and Dubuque in Iowa; La Crosse in Wisconsin; and ending in Red Wing, Minnesota.

With so many fascinating shore excursions to choose from, it’s well worth taking time to tour the St. Louis Arch . Opened in 1965, the monument to America’s westward expansion is far more than just a stunning photo by the riverside. Venture underground between the arch legs for a museum. Climb aboard a tram to be transported 630 feet up to the top of America’s tallest monument for some stunning views.

12-day Heart of the Delta: Memphis to New Orleans

The 386-guest Viking Mississippi spans five decks, making it one of the largest passenger vessels on the Mississippi. Inaugurated in 2022, the ship features a modern Scandinavian design with an infinity pool and a two-story Explorers’ Lounge observation area similar to its ocean ships. Directly in front of the Explorer’s Lounge is an expanded outdoor seating area known as The Bow. Three restaurants serve both Southern regional cuisine and international favorites.

The cruise starts in Memphis on November 14 and includes stops in Rosedale, Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez in Mississippi as well as St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow in Louisiana, ending in New Orleans. The “Mississippi Sings the Blues” shore excursion visits iconic sites along the Mississippi Blues Trail such as historic Dockery Farms, considered the “birthplace of the blues.”

The tour stops in Clarksdale, the fabled “Crossroads” where legend says blues great Robert Johnson reputedly sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his guitar prowess. Stops at the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi and the Delta Blues Museum completes this perfect trip for music lovers.

Nashville TN

9-day Music Cities Cruise: Nashville to Memphis

Music is the main focus of this cruise offered by American Cruise Lines, which begins in Nashville on July 9 with an unforgettable visit to the legendary Grand Ole Opry and ends in Memphis, where passengers will enjoy live music on Beale Street and a tour of Elvis Presley’s Graceland . On board the American Splendor, passengers will enjoy spacious cabins and popular rocking chairs. First inaugurated in 2016 and fully redecorated in 2022, this ship offers the nostalgia of a classic paddlewheeler along with the comfort of modern amenities.

While in Nashville, explore the Johnny Cash Museum, then walk upstairs to The Patsy Cline Museum. Nightly entertainment spotlights the musical heritage of this region as the world’s newest paddlewheeler journeys along the river. The itinerary also includes Clarksville and Dover in Tennessee plus Paducah in Kentucky. In Paducah, stroll along the riverfront with more than 50 life-sized panoramic murals depicting Paducah’s past. Stop by Paducah’s National Quilt Museum, the world’s largest museum devoted to quilt and fiber art.

23-day Complete Mississippi River Cruise: New Orleans to St. Paul

Sail 1,393 miles through 10 states on a comprehensive exploration of the mighty Mississippi on the new American Serenade . Inaugurated in 2023, the 91-cabin American Serenade won Best New River Cruise Ship of the Year 2023 by Cruise Critic , the first time an American ship has received this prestigious award.

“With extra-large all-balcony staterooms and suites, trendy interior décor, an innovative hydraulic bow and retractable ramp, and one of the most gorgeous sun decks we’ve seen on a river-going ship, American Serenade sets the bar for domestic US river cruising high,” the award notes.

The epic itinerary beginning July 18, 2024 includes 22 ports of call including Oak Alley, Houmas House, Baton Rouge, and St. Francisville in Louisiana; Natchez, Vicksburg, Greenville, and Tunica in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, and Hannibal in Missouri; Muscatine and Dubuque in Iowa; and Winona, Red Wing, and Saint Paul in Minnesota.

12-day Mississippi River Gateway Cruise: New Orleans to St. Louis

From the French Quarter in New Orleans to the towering Gateway Arch in St. Louis , this American Heritage cruise lives up to its name. Inaugurated in 2015 and totally redecorated in 2022, the 84-cabin American Heritage is the perfect vessel for this interesting itinerary, its design reminiscent of the days when steamboat paddlewheelers plied the Mississippi in the 1800s.

The 12-day voyage departs from New Orleans on July 2. Ports of call along the way include Baton Rouge in Louisiana; Natchez and Vicksburg in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; and Paducah in Kentucky . An onboard expert shares tales of the importance of steam-driven paddlewheels in establishing riverfront communities along the great Mississippi River.

Step ashore in Natchez and enjoy a cold drink at the Under-the-Hill-Saloon, once one of the rowdiest establishments on the Mississippi River in the 1800s. Legend says that Mark Twain stopped here when he was just another riverman named Samuel Clemens.

9-day Lower Mississippi River Cruise: Memphis to New Orleans

This nine-day American Melody cruise departs Memphis on September 8 and features eight ports of call including Vicksburg and Natchez in Mississippi, and St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Houmas House in Louisiana. At Vicksburg Military Park, learn how the 101st Airborne Division got its “Screaming Eagles” nickname, plus the tale of its famous soldier, a young guitar player named Jimi Hendrix. At Houmas House, see the bedroom where Bette Davis stayed to film the 1964 movie Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte . Joan Crawford was the intended co-star but Bette and Joan feuded so Joan quit and Olivia de Havilland replaced her.

Launched in 2021, the five-deck American Melody has 91 staterooms, all with private balconies and full-length sliding glass doors. The ship has several spacious lounges, a fitness center, large dining room, café for casual dining, sun deck, library, and an impressive four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship. The ship’s unusual bow opens and lowers a platform for passengers to easily walk ashore.

9-day Upper Mississippi River Cruise: St. Louis to St. Paul

Board the American Symphony cruise ship to visit Mark Twain’s hometown and experience the real-life inspiration behind Life on the Mississippi, the classic memoir chronicling the author's days on the river as a steamboat pilot.

The 91-cabin American Symphony, recently inaugurated in 2022, has 100% private balcony accommodations and a unique bow that opens with a retractable gangway that can be extended for landings virtually anywhere. The ship also features lounges soaring 40 feet above the water with triple the glass of other riverboats for spectacular views. Comfy deck chairs welcome passengers to enjoy the undeveloped countryside, picturesque islands, and fascinating dams and navigation locks.

Departing September 27, this itinerary features seven ports of call including Muscatine and Dubuque in Iowa, and Winona and Red Wing in Minnesota. In Hannibal, visit the actual home—with a whitewashed Tom Sawyer fence—where Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) grew up. In Dubuque, see the 1989 “Field of Dreams” movie site known for the famous quote, “If you build it, they will come.”
